A year ago a paper (1) was presented at the Annual Western Meeting of the Institute regarding silicosis in Ontario mines. It described the whole problem as we see it and discussed the means of prevention. The work and aims of the Technical Silicosis Research Committee of the Ontario Mining Association, and of the Committee's field engineer, were fully described also and it is suggested that reference be made to this paper in order to have a better understanding of the observations which are presented now. These observations enlarge upon parts of the dust control measures already discussed and tell of general progress in the past year. They concern fifty properties, the majority of the operating mines, which vary in size from the hopeful prospect to established producers yielding 11,000 tons of ore daily. Most of these are gold mines; a few copper-nickel. The ores range from heavy sulphides to siliceous materials and they are mined by many methods from varying types of deposits. The majority of the latter are steeply dipping and all are found in Precambrian host-rocks. Up to the present, die greatest depth to which mining has penetrated is 6,400 feet.

A smelter scheduling algorithm has been developed, which allocates the oxygen production between the smelting furnace and the converter aisle, so as to maximize copper throughput. The algorithm is intended for daily operation planning, controlling the sequencing of the converter cycles, and the oxygen drawn by these cycles. In some cases, it may be worthwhile to decrease converter oxygen allocation in favour of the smelting furnaces. Thus, a better utilization of the oxygen plant can increase primary copper throughput by several percentage points. This principle is demonstrated through sample computations. The approach presented in this paper can be incorporated into smelter management software.

"Greater reliability of mineral deposit and reserve estimates can be attained through better quality control of the data and information acquisition, and the estimation processes. This paper reviews the following key requirements:1. greater awareness of the significant figures of both data and estimates, and better understanding of the probabilistic aspects of the estimates, their confidence limits and margins of error;2. greater reliability of the information that supports the estimates, by more explicit and more rigorous methods and standards for data acquisition and for interpretations;3. more quantitative estimations of geological/mineral continuity, based on improved three dimensional sampling patterns and the use of geostatistics; and 4. better integration at the project engineering and mine production stages, of the mineral deposit characteristics and mining method constraints, for more efficient mineral recovery and mine quality control.RÉSUMÉUne plus grande fiabilité des estimations des gisements et des réserves minières requiert plus d'emphase sur le contrôle de la qualité de I ‘acquisition de l'information et du processus d'estimation. An account of a new method of investigating the electrical .properties J the earth's crust is presented. The method, called AFMAG, employs, as a source, natural alternating magnetic fields of audio and sub-audio frequencies. Measurements of the distortion of these fields caused by geological features are made with the aid of search coil detectors at several discrete frequencies. Many results of field surveys made with the method are presented and they illustrate its advantages and limitations when applied to the search for massive sulphide mineralization. The advantages far outweigh the limitations and in fact indicate that a major breakthrough in geophysical exploration technique and instrumentation has been made.

"ONE OF THE FIRST DOCUMENTED APPLICATIONS of soil geochemistry in the Canadian Shield was that carried out by Chisholm in the Kenora district in 1949. This survey proved successful in outlining sulphide-associated gold veins utilizing cold-extractable metals. Since then, mining companies, government agencies - both provincial and federal - and universities have conducted soil investigations. Some of the results are documented in publications, others are on open file in provincial and federal mines departments and, unfortunately, many other investigations with both successful and unsuccessful results are buried in company files or have been discarded. This paper deals with soils within the scope of chemical studies of overburden in the Canadian Shield. The subject is a broad one and some definition is required. The soil investigations discussed herein are those aimed at the testing of specific targets more or less in the source area. This definition distinguishes soil investigations from other overburden studies which commonly monitor metal accumulations at some substantial distance from the metal source. Naturally this distinction is relative, because in many instances there is overlap."

Today, underground exploration is spotlighted as an infinitely developable area. For this purpose, many tunneling technologies were created. And until this very day, many techniques are being developed for more efficient underground movement. Although previous technologies have been developed and now being used in various forms like TMB, struck propulsion method and hydraulic propulsion method, it is hard to find a robot type exploring in small scale. But development of small scale underground exploration robot is a promising research subject for its usage in examination of soil, mineral, and subterranean resources, investigation of hazardous regions, and the military. So we developed a robot that can dig and move underground, inspired from the motion of earthworm and mole cricket. Earthworm and mole cricket dig the soil in the front and draw it off backward, so that they can move forward. We developed a mechanism that uses 2 rotating solid of revolution (bits) for pulverizing the firmly united soil in the front and put it inside the body. The bits rotate in the opposite direction of each other. While moving forward, the soil in the front moves along the spiral on the bit and is saved inside the body. The soil saved inside is taken out through an outlet in the back by a ventilation system. The ventilation system on the ground blows through a hosepipe connected to inner part of the robot and the air blows off the soil. The moving mechanism of exploring underground can be classified into 2 parts. One is to fix the blade link on the soil in a form of 4-bar link. The other one is to move forward rotating the whole link. When the blade link system for movement rotates a certain degree, one blade link is fixed, while the other one is folded in. When 2 blade links of different length rotate as it is, different torque is applied on each link. By the law of action and reaction, the link that has larger torque leads the rotation and movement.

"Between 1934 and 1956, nearly 31 million grams of gold were produced in the Matachewan area from deposits on properties belonging to Young-Davidson Mines Limited and Matachewan Consolidated Mines Limited. In 1979, production from these properties was renewed by Pamour Porcupine Mines Limited.Most of the gold produced has come from relatively lowgrade deposits (3.4 gl t or less) that occur in an east-trending belt of dykes and irregular bodies of trachytic syenite. Although small by comparison, these deposits have some of the characteristics of porphyry copper-molybdenum deposits. The mineralized syenite contains up to 5 per cent disseminated pyrite and is highly fractured and cut by quartz and quartzcarbonate veinlets. Gold occurs as native gold along fractures, in quartz veinlets and as minute inclusions in pyrite. Minor chalcopyrite and trace amounts of scheelite, molybdenite and galena are also present. Mineralization was accompanied by potassic alteration, consisting mainly of potassium feldspar.Some gold was also produced from small, but higher-grade, deposits in volcanic rocks. These deposits occur near the syenite-hosted deposits and consist of quartz veins and stringers mineralized .with pyrite and gold. Minor gold is present in some low-grade, porphyry-type copper-molybdenum occurrences and, locally, in large, isolated quartz veins.Lead isotope analyses suggest that the gold deposits were formed at about 2700 Ma and were locally remobilized at approximately 2400 Ma, following the Kenoran orogeny. The deposits appear to be genetically related to felsic magmas emplaced in an epizonal environment and deposited from hydrothermal solutions relatively concentrated in S and K20."

This paper is concerned with an analysis of a number of failures of large-size, hypervelocity light gas gun chambers and barrels. A brief description of the light gas gun principle and of the various types of guns is first given. The failures and the investigations carried out are then described in detail, with the failures divided into two groups. The first group comprises those failures caused by certain conditions to which the guns may be submitted, and includes, for example, severe local heating of the bore surface causing hardening and cracking of the steel. These conditions were accidental and steps were taken to prevent them. The remaining failures were due to faults in the material or in the heat-treatment, manufacturing or assembling procedures. Specific problems, such as hydrogen embrittlement, and the use of high strength gun barrels above their ductile-brittle transition temperature by preheating prior to firing, are briefly considered. Saganoseki Smelter & Refinery is one of the largest copper producers in Japan to produce 450,000 tons of new copper annually. Saganoseki used to operate six PS converters with "4 Hot-2 Blow" scheme, but managed to change its operation to "3 Hot-2 Blow" scheme with four PS converters, while maintaining the same production capacity. To achieve the operational change, the following improvements have been carried out; 1) Extending service life from 220 to 350 batches, 2) Shortening cycle time by increasing the blowing rate and the matte grade, 3) Reducing environmental impact by applying sophisticated fugitive gas collection system and 4) Saving energy by waste heat boiler’s modifications. The operational change has been successfully executed, and results in drastic productivity increase and cost reduction. Currently, Saganoseki is maintaining the efficient and consistent operation with 4 PS converters. This paper describes the above-mentioned improvements for increasing productivity and the recent operational conditions of the PS converters.

"""Unassayable gold and platinum group metals"" have come into vogue in the 70sand 80s in certain jurisdictions as a means of perpetrating fraud. Usual arguments are that a particular ore is not amenable to ""conventional fire assaying"". Explanations for unassayable gold usually revolve around: evaporation of micron-size gold; vaporization of organic gold complexes; volatization of gold halides; alloying of gold with PGM's which prevents fusion or alloying which prevents collection .This paper reviews several of the myths and truths of gold and PGM assaying with the knowledge that not a single mine operatesin thefree world producing gold from unassayable ore.INTRODUCTIONAccurate analyses of exploration data and estimation of ore reserves are two of the most important functions of professional geologists and engineers in mine development. The problems encountered become particularly acute when dealing with precious metal values where very low grade deposits (in the range of 0.0 I Troy oz per ton or - 0.2 ppm (g/t) by weight) sometimes are economic or constitute ""ore"". To emphasize this ""scarcity effect"", a gold assay of 0.4 g/t (0.01 T oz/st) would result from the presence of a single 420 J.tm (35 mesh) gold flake (which weighs I milligram) in a 5 kilogram siliceous sample.The current high gold price and the prospects of high profit margins awaiting exploitation of even very low grade gold deposits, has spawned a sizeable group of incompetent or fraudulent gold assayers. These ""assayers"" will often report significant precious metal values where no such values occur. Failures of legitimate assay labs to confirm these ""significant"" assays are often attributed, by the charlatan, to their capability of detecting ""unassayable gold"" while the check assayer cannot. Geologists and engineers lacking detailed knowledge of sampling and assaying techniques are often hard-pressed to convince a gold-fever aroused company executive or investor-client to abandon a property on which attention-grabbling values have been reported, often by more than one laboratory. Professionals engaged in such evaluations must acquire an understanding of contemporary precious metal sampling and assaying techniques . "The circulation wear rates of pure nickel, cupronickel and nickel-plated-steel coins were measured and found to be in the ratio 1:3:1 . The relative wear rates of nickel and cupronickel coins were similar to those reported in earlier studies, and the circulation wear data for nickel were used as a reference in laboratory wear tests. A correlation between circulation wear rates and laboratory wear rates formed the basis for a prediction of service life using relief legibility as an 'end of life' criterion. This criterion was determined to be an average surface thickness loss of 12 um. The surf aces of nickel and Nickel-Banded-Steel (N-B-STM) coins were observed to harden both in circulation and in the laboratory tests at a rate of approximately I VHN/year of actual or simulated service life. It was also observed that the laboratory wear rate of N-B -S coins increased as nickel cladding thickness increased and this effect was attributed to differences in surface hardness.Wear test results are also reported for the new Canadian dollar coin material which shows a better wear resistance than pure nickel. IntroductionThe subject of coinage wear has a long history, and a number of studies have been published, concerned both with the measurement of circulation wear rates and with accelerated laboratory tests to simulate the behaviour of coinage materials in service. As early as 1803, wear tests were conducted by Hatchett on gold coinage using various types of vibratory and tumbling machines». These tests were commissioned by King George III of England who was concerned about the wear of gold coins in circulation.Early in this century, Adrian performed laboratory tests that showed that the wear rates of cupronickel 75/25 and nickel coins were in the ratio 3:1 and this ratio was later confirmed in laboratory tests reported by Daeppen and Zurrerw, The latter authors also weighed cupronickel and nickel coins that had been in circulation for various times and observed the same 3: I ratio. There was further support from Tylczak and Blickensderfer who reported significantly higher abrasive wear rates for cupronickel compared to nickel, when rubbed against sand paper."

This paper presents a general re-view of the various methods of briquetting coals, with and without the aid of a binder, with special reference to the production of a suitable briquette from Nova Scotia 'fines' for re-blending with industrial coal. From the economic and technical viewpoints, either small stoker-sized briquettes made with about 4 per cent asphalt in standard low-pressure double-roll presses, or briquettes made without binder in high-pressure double-roll presses, appear to be the most reasonable solution at present.

The rates of return on investment are examined for several major Canadian mining companies. Because we are dealing with a highly cyclical industry, subjected to widely fluctuating metal prices, rates of return are examined over a 20-year period. Conveniently, the first decade examined reflects the period when the industry enjoyed incentives to develop deposits; during the second decade, incentives were reduced and the industry became the most heavily taxed industry in Canada. The high rates of inflation since 1973 have distorted the real rates of return on investment if one considers replacement cost.

The paper presents the initial investigation of possible energetic applications of chosen wastes from groups: 06, 03, 05 and 01, including coal slimes being secondary product of hard coal processing. These categories of wastes are catalogued according to the polish law, where 06 ? wastes from production, preparation, purchasing and application of products of non-organic chemistry; 03 ? wastes from wood processing and from plates and furniture, celluloid mass, paper and card board production; 13 ? oil wastes and wastes from liquid fuels; 01 ? wastes produced by searching, extracting, physical and chemical processing of ores and other mineral raw materials. The change of combustion heat value was evaluated in produced energetic mixtures containing these types of wastes together with the change of their individual components. All combinations of ingredients were taken into consideration giving 256 various mixtures, from which 36 were selected to investigation. This allowed the performance of statistical factor analysis. For such prepared materials the application of regressive method was proposed in purpose of calculating combustion heat value and then the comparison of empirically determined and theoretically calculated heat values was performed. The change of regressive coefficients can be determined by the nature of Hess law (eq. 1) what was investigated and the attempt of its explication and validation was done.

Abstract-The Campo Morado precious-metal-bearing, volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits occur in a lower Cretaceous, bimodal, calc-alkaline volcanic sequence in a major northerly trending belt in the Guerrero Terrane in northeastern Guerrero, Mexico. During upper Cretaceous to Early Tertiary greenschist-facies regional metamorphism, the rocks were deformed strongly into a northeast-verging fold-and-thrust belt. Three later stages of weak deformation were dominated, respectively, by kink folds, broad warps, and extensional faults. Most deposits occur in the upper part of a sequence of felsic flows and heterolithic volcanoclastic rocks or at its contact with overlying chert and argillite-sandstone. The Reforma and El Rey massive sulfide deposits are on the overturned limb of a major, thrusted anticline, and the Naranjo and El Largo massive sulfide deposits are to the south on the upright limb of the same major fold. The La Lucha and San Rafael massive sulfide occurrences are in an upper plate to the southwest which was thrusted over the plate containing the Naranjo and El Largo deposits. In several of the deposits, Au, Ag, Zn, and Pb are concentrated near the stratigraphic top, and Cu is concentrated near the stratigraphic base. Major minerals are pyrite, quartz, ankerite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and galena. Minor minerals are tennantite-freibergite, arsenopyrite, and pyrrhotite. Gold and Ag occur in argentian gold, and Ag also occurs in tennantite-freibergite. The cumulative inferred resource of massive sulfide for the Reforma, Naranjo, El Rey, and El Largo deposits exceeds 30 Mt, with the latter two deposits incompletely delineated. Underlying pyrite-quartz stockwork zones contain chalcopyrite, chlorite, and sphalerite. Hydrothermal alteration minerals in the stratigraphic footwall are pyrite, quartz, chlorite, ferroan dolomite, and ankerite. In the stratigraphic hangingwall, hydrothermal alteration minerals are sericite, calcite-dolomite, and lesser clay minerals and quartz. The deposits belong to a low-sulfidation, volcanogenic massive sulfide system formed in a subaqueous environment, and are of the bimodal, siliciclastic type.

The application of biologically assisted methods for metal extraction in the mining industry has a long history, but development of modern techniques has been relatively slow. There is, however, a resurgence of interest in the industry with the recent development of methods to successfully treat base metals concentrates. Two major pilot plant programs for treatment of chalcopyrite concentrates have been initiated in the past year and results from one are beginning to be released. This paper provides an overview of methods that have been applied in the past, from the earliest deliberate applications of the technology, through the copper and uranium heap and dump leach applications, the more highly engineered agitated tank leach gold applications and the developments currently taking place in the industry.

"The stress equilibrium is disturbed in a body of rock by a mine opening and is restored by a redistribution of the stresses around the opening. The pattern of the redistribution of unilateral stress around an opening has been established by mathematical analysis and photoelastic measurements. The pattern for multilateral stress is found by superimposition of unilateral fields. The mathematical analysts do not use the elastic moduli as parameters and they are not significant in photoelastic work. The medium is isotropic. The concept of unilateral stress from vertical loading and the classical pattern of its stress distribution around openings does not explain commonly observed failures around the perimeters of mine openings. They show evidence of compression where tension is postulated.When it is recognized that few minerals and perhaps no rocks are Hooke Solids, most rocks must be St. Venant Solids. The components have varying degrees of elasticity and viscosity. The assembly will be-have elastically to rupture under shock loading, but when loaded short of rupture will adjust viscously to equilibrium. Similarly, the highly elastic components may initiate rupture before equilibrium can be established when stress is instantaneously relieved. Polycrystalline adjustments may produce permanent deformation. The mechanics of consolidation, especially in sedimentary deposits, ac-quire a stress component normal to the direction of compaction which can exceed that of the loading. It is one source of prestress. There are others. The principles of prestress design are based on the normal beam reactions, modified by a built-in compression in the lower chord. When the beam is loaded to design limits, the lower chord retains some compression and the whole beam depth is effective in compression. Some of the . common evidences of failure in compression over a mine opening can be duplicated in a prestressed experimental model.When the triaxial stress pattern is recognized and suitable measuring techniques are devised, mine design can be done on a rational basis."
