My topic for today is the Crown Minerals of the future. New work initiatives are underway and the organisational structure is being overhauled. These are not insignificant changes and in this paper briefly summarises these proposals. These new work initiatives and changes to the organisational structure will have implications for the industry as a whole and also for the way individual clients interact with Crown Minerals.

A method using dynamic programming for solving the optimum pit limit problem was presented in an earlier paper. A recent issue of this journal contained some contributed discussion on the implementation of this technique. In this paper we provide some additional ideas and possible options one can incorporate into the method. In particular, an efficient procedure for obtaining further optimum pit outlines on extensions of the original block model is described.

The role of automation in the environmental management of the various stages of mining projects is discussed. Remote sensing can be useful in the exploration phase, but tends not to have sufficient resolution for individual operations. Automatic samplers, whether for meteorology, air or water, are widely used, but can have operational problems. The environmental scientist, the electronics engineer and the computer programmer must combine in the future to develop products which are applicable, robust and simple to use.

Research programs have established the correlation between the basic mill operating parameters such as: size of crushing products, number of mill rotation, ore flow and quantity of ore in the mill, diameter of grinding media, and specific consumption of grinding media. Reliability is also most important, and indeed is fundamental, to successful coal exporting.Coal preparation, blending, distribution, marketing and utilisation are areas of the coal industry in which reliability can be critical to coal exporting. A series of experiments were carried out with Hallimond tube in order to test the effects of different reagents. A good result has been obtained when potassium-n-butyl xanthate is used as collector for molybdenite and graphite complex are depressed by the depressor mixed with nigrosine and iron (III) chloride. The separating mechanism has been studied with help of many modem instruments.

The Agnew Nickel Mine has a short his-tory of mining activities. However it has experienced a large variety of ground support problems. These problems relate to geological, hydrological, geomechanical, structural and mining techniques. The majority of the prob-lems occur in other underground mines. How-ever the large serpentinite hosted ore body which contains over 80% of the ore has prob-lems rarely encountered in other mines. Sol-utions to the problems are only being gained by understanding the factors creating them.

The intention of this paper is to give a review of the present status of lignite mining in the so-called Gulf States in the United States of America, namely Texas, Arkansas, Mis- sissippi and Louisiana. The situation in these states is similar to the situation in Australia in that "Strip Mining - 45 m and Beyond" repre- sents the main technical problem to be over- come in the near future. A method is proposed for the analysis of tin in cassiterite ores. Tin is volatilised by heating with ammonium iodide. The tin iodide so formed is extracted with hydrochloric acid and the concentration is measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy using an air-hydrogen flame.It is considered that a more efficient extraction of tin and faster reproducible results are obtained than by any other known method.

Weinberg, born and educated in Germany, worked in'the American West for 10 years as a mining engineer and metallurgist. He was the first head of the Queensland Smelting Co. and from 1889 through 1915 was a prominent mining figure in Queensland. He was a competent manager at Aldershot, Dapto, and Chillagoe, but always lacked huge ore deposits for his smelters.
