This paper comprises a discussion of standards for comparing conditions in mines, of methods for measuring the flow of air, of a comparison of fan performances, and the application of these matters to mines in Western Australia.UNDERGROUND CONDITIONSIn approaching the question of mine ventilation one naturally searches for some standard by which to measure the conditions in a mine.There are several clauses in the Mines Regulation Act defining the conditions which are permitted. The quantity of CO2 is limited to 0·25 by volume, but the estimation of CO2 involves a chemical determination and is not suited for general use in a mine.The maximum temperature is fixed at 87 0 F. (dry bulb), and at 80° (wet bulb). The reading of temperature is easily done in the working places, and this is a very valuable and practical test of the conditions in a mine.The wet bulb temperature is probably the most important factor in determining working conditions. It is obvious that human life cannot be sustained for any appreciable period if the wet bulb temperature is above blood heat (about 97°F.). The Ok Tedi porphyry copper and gold mine is an open-pit operation located within the Star Mountains in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea and is situated near the headwaters of the Ok Tedi-Fly River system. The climate is equatorial sub-alpine with rainfall ranging from five to ten metres per year. Mining commenced in 1984 and to-date approximately 500 Mt of waste rock has been produced. A failing waste rock dump system operates whereby the dumps are eroded by tributary creeks of the Ok Tedi. It is estimated that approximately 250 Mt of waste is retained within the upper reaches of the river system. The waste rock comprises both potentially acid forming rock and limestone and to-date the overall waste has been acid consuming. However, the long-term mine plan identifies declining limestone production and hence an increasing risk of acid generation over the remaining years of the operation. A program was initiated to determine the net acid producing potential (NAPP) required (ie target NAPP) to minimise the risk of acid generation within the waste rock dumps. The results from this program provide guidelines for an operational target NAPP strategy to provide sufficient acid buffering across all size fractions in the waste rock dump for long-term ARD control. Implementation of this plan requires additional limestone to be mined and co-disposed with ROM waste rock.

Flooding velocities were measured in a laboratory column (96 mm 4) provided with both bottom and side air entry Packings used were 6 mm glass rings and spheres and -16 +8 mm coke. Results showed that when air was introduced through side nozzles flooding velocities were much higher than those obtained when air was introduced at the bottom of the column. Significance of the results and application to blast furnace flooding is discussed from the viewpoint of assymmetric gas flow.

At the Risdon plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited, impurities toxic to the electrolytic production of zinc metal, notably arsenic and antimony, have traditionally been coprecipitated when precipitating iron as ferric hydroxide. With the development of a new lead/zinc mine at Elura, New South Wales, it was anticipated that the concentration of impurities, particularly arsenic, in the zinc sulphide concentrates treated at Risdon would increase. This suggested that an increase in the capacity of the iron purification step in the Risdon plant would be required to cope with the higher input of these impurities.Laboratory investigations showed that the additional capacity would be achieved, either by a large increase in the amount of iron used as the "collector" in the process, or by a two-stage process. The latter approach was preferred as a increase in the amount of iron precipitated would lead to much higher operating costs and overloading of the existing equipment.In the two stage procedure, acidic iron bearing solution is added to solution feeding the first stage and most of the arsenic removed from solution when iron is precipitated from solution by neutralisation with limestone. Mter separation of the precipitated solids, acidic iron bearing solution is added to the solution, and remaining arsenic removed almost completely following neutralisation by limestone.This paper describes the laboratory and pilot plant results and the plant modifications required. Abrief account is also given of the operator training and acceptance in the use of the digital control facilities installed in the new plant.The new plant is working well and good solution purity is being maintained despite a substantial increase in the concentration of impurities in the raw materials.

The cost of drilling consumables is always a large component of any mine budget. It is important that this cost be carefully examined with a view to reducing the overall cost per inetre or at least minimising its escalation.At Renison it is considered that the only way to ensure drilling costs do not rise unduly is through a total system of control from purchase to disposal.In 1979 extension of an existing drill supply service contract was carefully examined and abandoned in favour of a hybrid system. This system is providing a great deal of control over the use of drilling consumables and has maintained a relatively constant cost per drilled metre over the last five years.Current consignment stock contracts for drilling consumables are strictly specified by the Technical Services section of the Mine Department and consumables purchased under these contracts are distributed and refurbished/sharpened by a contractor.The total result of this package is individual drilling items that achieve the best cost per metre and careful distribution and maintenance to ensure maximum life.

The results of pot-furnace tests with 35 bituminous coals from 20 seams in New South Wales and Queensland were used to establish the relationship between coal properties, as determined by standard laboratory tests, and the combustion process. The rate of combustion is influenced chiefly by the expansion of the fuel bed, but this cannot be accurately predicted from the crucible swelling number of the coal.The effects of various other factors, such as calorific value and ash yield, were investigated and statistical analysis of the results shows that the coals could be classified satisfactorily according to two experimentally derived parameters, namely heat-release rate at an air flow rate of 260 lb/sq.ft/hr and air flow rate giving stoichiometric combustion. The grouping obtained is shown to be related to ash yield and swelling number.INTRODUCTIQNThe rate of heat release from the fuel bed of a travelling grate stoker and the efficiency with which the heat is used depend upon the design and method of operation of the furnace as well as upon the properties of the fuel. It is difficult to draw general conclusions concerning the influence of fuel properties from tests on a single stoker installation. In the pot-furnace test, on the other hand, a part of the same combustion process as occurs on a travelling grate is carried out in isolation, uninfluenced by furnace design variables, and consequently the effects of coal properties and of the method of pretreatment can readily be demonstrated.While the combustion pot provides a rapid method of assessing the combustion characteristics of a fuel during the ignition and burn-out stages under standard conditions, and of predicting changes in performance with changes in fuel or in air flow rate, it is unable to simulate certain features of furnace design and operation. Unnamed early prospectors panned gold from creeks drain- ing the Great Dividing Range in the early part of 1851. The first publicised discovery was credited to Edward Hargraves near Bathurst in New South Wales later in 1851 and during the ensu- ing gold rush, prospectors rapidly made discoveries elsewhere in New South Wales and later across the border in Victoria. Reference to the attached graphs of gold production indicates that for much of the first 100 years, gold production came from the easily worked and readily discovered shallow alluvial deposits, many of which were located in the creeks draining mountainous regions of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland (Fig. 1 and 2). As these deposits were exhausted, prospectors turned their attention to outcrop lode deposits which led to the development of underground mining techniques and a significant boost in over- all gold production. With the discovery of the rich Golden Mile lodes in Kalgoorlie in 1893, gold production increased signifi- cantly and peaked around the turn of the century. At that time, the enormous potential of the great Witwatersrand deposits in South Africa had only just been appreciated and for a few years, Australia led the world in gold production (1855-1863 and again in 1903). Underground mining continued in the Eastern Goldfields area of Western Australia, the Bendigo-Ballarat region of Victoria and in northeast Queensland. Very few of these operations continued beyond the Second World War, except the larger producers in the Kalgoorlie region where recovered grade had dropped to about 6 g/t Au. By the early 1970s with the gold price fixed at US$35 per ounce, most of the operations were shut down as labour costs escalated, with only the low cost bulk mining operation at Mt. Charlotte and the high grade reefs at Norseman continuing in Production.

Silver-lead mineralization at Indooroopilly, Queensland, extends upwards from Upper Triassic rhyolite which intrudes phyllite-containing Palaeozoic mineralization.Sulphides and magma were emplaced in a special structural site which underwent dilational fracturing while surrounding rocks were block-faulted and compressed. This site lies at tbe intersection of dykes, faults, and a lineament adjacent to a Middle Triassic granitic stock.Structural controls at Indooroopilly are attributed to the effects of piston faulting. Exploration for similarly controlled deposits should be directed towards structural intersections near stocks or batholiths which have intruded mineralized belts. Priority should be given to structural intersections which were sites of block-faulting and igneous activity under compressional tectonic conditions.Favourable sites lacking surface mineralization may contain ore at depth as piston faulting produces 'blind' ore deposits.

The bubble size, together with the gas rate, determines the bubble surface area flux in flotation machines and, therefore, impacts directly on the kinetics of flotation. Understanding the variables that influence bubble size is one of the keys to understanding flotation recovery. Surprisingly, these relationships are poorly understood, largely due to the difficulties associated with gas dispersion measurements in industrial environments. The McGill gas dispersion sensors (bubble size, gas rate, gas holdup) are capable of reliably making such measurements. This paper reports on a study, using the McGill sensors in a 0.8 m3 Metso RCSTM pilot cell, which investigated the effect on bubble size of frother type and concentration, gas rate, temperature and rotor speed. A Denver laboratory cell was used to investigate the effect of elevation above sea level. Frother concentration proved to have the predominant influence on bubble size, and the effect of frother type can be normalised as a function of the critical coalescence concentration (CCC). Measurements made at many plant sites worldwide are compared to the model developed using the Metso RCSTM unit.

High-sulphidation (HS) gold, silver and/or copper deposits are generated in both the epithermal and the upper parts of the underlying porphyry environments over vertical intervals of up to 2 km. The HS deposits are generated in advanced argillic lithocaps, which are products of the absorption of acidic magmatic volatiles by voluminous groundwater systems. Mineralisation styles in HS systems reflect depth of formation as well as the interplay between structural, lithological and hydrothermal parameters. The deep parts of HS systems, at depths of >1000 m, are typified by disseminated copper¦gold mineralisation comprising digenite, chalcocite and covellite in pervasive advanced argillic as well as underlying sericitic alteration. In highly telescoped systems, suchmineralisation may overprint porphyry stocks and associatedquartz-veinlet stockworks. Intermediate levels of HS systems commonlycontain fault-controlled copper-gold mineralisation, typically as enargite in bodies of vuggy residual quartz, silicification and/or massive pyritic sulphide. The growth in the nickel market and the price increases predicted in 1970 have not mat-erialized. Several plants have been construct-ed, particularly to treat lateritic ores. A spectacular increase in cost of energy and the escalation of capital costs have led to severe economic difficulties on the part of many nickel producers. Several of the nickel prod-ucers joined together to form a Nickel Develop-ment Institute in 1984 with the prime objective of improving nickel markets. Most producers have taken exceptional action to cut overall costs as well as unit costs. Another organiz-ation made up of nickel producers, NiPERA, was established in 1980, to study and take action on problems of nickel in the environment and especially in the workplace.Ion exchange, and particularly continuous ion exchange, has been developed into a reli-able commercial unit operation in the last dec-ade. An example of how ion exchange combined with hydrogen reduction can be integrated into a Caron type reduction roast ammonium carbonate leach process for the recovery of nickel from laterites is discussed.

The swelling process is an impor- tant problem causing damages to the structures in or on swelling rocks, both during construction and operating life. To understand swelling problem, a number of testing methods have been developed by many researchers. In these studies, the swelling parameters, in most cases, are derived from oedometer tests. The swelling parameters determined from oedometer type tests represent one-dimensional behaviour (one-dimensional swelling law) therefore, it is quite difficult to extrapolate the oedometer type test results to the three-dimensional in-situ conditions. To overcome these problems, a three-dimensional approach is suggested for clay bearing rocks. Results of triaxial swelling tests conducted on marl from Dodurga Lignite Coal Mine are presented. Triaxial swelling characteristics of the marl are presented and design approach for tunnels is described.

During the last century Allis-Chalmers has supplied many screens of various types to industry, from revolving screens to the large capacity highly efficient screen available today. The features incorporated over these years in horizontal and inclined screens are varied and numerous and include many innovations such as tri-and bi-sloped screen decks. Today the emphasis is on wide vibrating screens with good "G" value, with large "throw", to achieve high capacity. Larger screens lead the way to treating a somewhat neglected area of mining operations - that of concentrator mine flotation tailings to allow effective transportation and stacking by conveyor belt. The benefits from a cost, water saving and environment view point are discussed in this paper.

Preliminary project evaluation is relevant to the evaluation process of the decision makers (or executives) prior to making the critical business choices. Important to the assessment is an integrated sensitivity, scenario and risk analysis at every stage of a mining project. This should include the evaluation of different options taking into account uncertainties. Construction of interactive financial computer models where each element is functionally integrated into a fully integrated life-cycle allows rapid and automatic study of the sensitivity of each element through changes in the value of an input. The scenario analysis is the effect of changing more than one input at a time, organised through scenarios in a decision tree. Risk analysis is an integrated analysis of the effect of all uncertainties of the parameters, using Monte Carlo simulation. Key to the asset decisions process is that the decision maker is provided with the essential integrated decision information. We have clustered this information into several scenario groups. Within each group, two levels of uncertain information are distinguished: discrete scenarios critical for the decisions; and remaining uncertainty within the scenario (risk analysis) which can be modelled by continuous probability density functions (pdfÆs). For an asset, the relevant scenarios in each group and the associated continuous pdfÆs need to be defined. When the scenario groups and associated pdfÆs have been defined for the asset, the decision process can be started by structuring the different scenario groups in a Scenario Tree. A Scenario Tree contains decision and end nodes. Each end node corresponds to a completely defined mine project or asset model. The calculations for each end node result in a set of stochastic realisations for the reserves, production forecast, cash flow, and profitability indicators (NPV, IRR, DPR). Thus, a deterministic and fully probabilistic multi-commodity analysis tool is provided to investigate the sensitivity and robustness of decisions.

Three cross sections, 200 m apart, display the distribution of indicator hydrothermal minerals across the Empire zone of the Golden Cross epithermal Au-Ag deposit, Waihi, New Zealand. These minerals are used to interpret the temperature and composition of hydrothermal fluids. The distribution of interstratified illite-montmorillonite and illite indicate that temperatures ranged from 140 to >220¦C, with temperatures above 220¦C predominating. The mineral assemblage of quartz-adularia-chlorite-illite-calcite-pyrite envelops the Empire vein system and stockwork, and reflects formation from an alkali chloride water whereas the mineral assemblage of replacement calcite-interstratified illite û montmorillonite-kaolinite forms a carapace and reflects formation from a CO2-rich steam-heated water. Alkali chloride waters appear responsible for the epithermal Au-Ag mineralisation.

This paper presents an economic study comparing two gold recovery processes, zinc precipitation (Merrill-Crowe) and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). Capital, operating, and gold losses costs from an actual CIP plant study are compared to costs developed from a hypothetical Merrill-Crowe process flowsheet. ' Results indicate an overall economic advantage to CIP over Merrill-Crowe for plants processing slurries within the range of the five gold solution grades selected for this study.

The anodic dissolution of iron from three different Western Australian reduced ilmenites was investigated using the carbon paste electrode technique. A characteristic current-potential diagram, called a cyclic voltammogram (CV), was obtained for each of the reduced ilmenites. The shape of the CV measured for all three reduced ilmenites was strongly time dependent. The effect of electrolyte composition and temperature on the CV of one reduced ilmenite was also investigated. The results suggest that the initial surface of iron in reduced ilmenite is slow to dissolve and that chloride ions and higher temperatures accelerate the dissolution of this initial surface layer. However, after removal of this layer, the dissolution rate was essentially independent of the electrolyte composition and the temperature.

This is a brief introduction of a sewer pipeline constructed with a pipe jacking method in combination with a 1 200 mm finished inner diameter tunnel boring machine developed for the first time in Japan. The pipeline is located under a national highway running through a densely built urban area and is 185.7 m long and 2.9 m to 3.7 m deep from the ground surface. The geological features along the pipeline show mostly slate and partly silt. The pipeline was constructed with a newly developed multi-application type tunnel boring machine equiped with a fluid transport system. The construction consisted of tunneling by a tunnel boring machine followed by pipe jacking operations. The excavated materials were dis- charged off the tunnel by a fluid transport System.

The problem of manufacturing from sulphuric 'acid and Christmas Igland "A" phosphate, superphosphate of acceptable physical condition and agronomic phosphate availability, is directly related- to the crystallisation of a reac- tion product, monocalcium phosphate monohydrate. Two solutions to the problem, vacuum drying the superphosphate and calcination of the ore before reaction with acid, are discussed.
