The evolution of the Oaky Creek mining complex provides a good example of the mining cycle in practice. Oaky Creek has been innovative in its choice of mining methods, with virtually the full range of coal mining methods having been used as workings have progressed down dip. The history of the mine is traced through its development (and ownership changes), progressive selection of mining methods as depths of cover to seams being mined have increased, and rehabilitation. This allows the different mining methods to be described and illustrates the concept of æwall-to-wall miningÆ.

his report is going to point to that the effect of the mining dewatering on the area of Transdanubian Mountain Range has reached a phase when the cost of dewatering and providing damages can seriously jeopardize a profitable mining operation. Up to 60s the interest of mining had been dominant only, but since the begining of 80s the conceptions of industrial development and the value of enviroment protection have been changed. The natural karstwater balance of the TMR can be presented (Figure Land 2.) and the present situation of it points to that the descharge has exceeded the reacharge in 50 %. During the past 10 years the decreasing of the stored karstic water resourches was 1.1 km . The decreasing of the spring yields reached 80-82 % of the natural ones. (Figure 3-4.). Conservation of the present discharge may lead up to the totaly drain of the karstwater regime. A computer aid control system had been to develop by the bauxite mining and using of it the yield of dewatering decreased and a moderate rising of the water table has started since 1986. A recunstruction was made at the biggest thermal-medicinal lake its springs have had their source in 40 meter depth inside a spring cave at the bottom of the lake. Earlier the spring yield decreased due to the dewatering activity of mines. As a result of using of the CAC system and the providing works at the thermal sprino,the karstwater balance has got in the state of equilibrum, the first cost was decreased and spring yield was increased and the enviromental limits were adverted from the way of mining.

This paper will discuss specifically the performances of vibrating screens having circular motion with inclined decks and linear motion with horizontal or near horizontal decks and both related mainly to coal, metalliferous, and other granulated solids applications where screening and efficient classification is required. Some misconceptions have been applied in the past with regard to making a screen type selection using either circular throw or linear throw and therefore this paper will endeavour to clarify these misconceptions.

Published information on technical and market developments in the uses of zinc tends to dwell very largely on two groups of uses of zinc - zinc coatings (mainly galvanising) and zinc casting alloys. These two groups account for two-thirds of primary zinc consumption. However, if total zinc consumption is taken into consideration, coatings and casting account for a little over half the total. Either way, the health - or otherwise - of these 'other' uses of zinc can have a substantial effect on the industry as a whole. The aim of this paper is to put the whole market picture for zinc into better focus, concentrating on the factors which can affect consumption in the 'other half' of zinc's markets: ò brass - the third most important market for zinc at around one million tonnes - responds to changes in the economic cycle. It has seen substantial changes in the balance between different forms of semi products, and, in Europe at least, some real market gains; ò zinc sheet - one of the original uses of zinc in Europe - has grown substantially in some countries, but remains almost unknown elsewhere; and ò zinc pigments and compounds are so numerous that - barring the substitution of zinc oxide in rubber - major overall changes in the market are unlikely. The paper examines these markets and assesses their potential and implications for zinc markets as a whole.

Over the past seven years, a combination of New Zealand-, Australian- and German-led research voyages using the research vessels Tangaroa, Southern Surveyor, and Sonne respectively, have revolutionised our understanding of the Kermadec-Tonga arc-backarc systems. This convergent margin is the most seismically-active subduction zone system on Earth with convergence rates steadily increasing northwards from the Hikurangi Trench to ~250 mm/year at northern Tonga. In combination with the intra-oceanic setting, factors potentially producing magmatic, tectonic, and hydrothermal variability in this system include an increase in potentially subductable sediment northwards along-strike, intersection of the Louisville Ridge (hot-spot chain) and Osbourn Trough (paleo-spreading centre) with the arc at ~25¦S, and the possibility of Samoan (hot-spot) plume ingression in the northern Lau Basin. The bulk of the magmatism is submarine; whereas only a few emergent (some transient) volcanic islands exist, about 80 submarine volcanic centres of significant size (>1000 m above surrounding sea floor) are present between White Island in the south to north of Tafahi in Tonga. About 35 per cent of these centres are hydrothermally active. Important petrogenetic features of the volcanic rocks along this arc system are the abundance of rhyolite (some quartz-amphibole-bearing), and the outcrop of primitive olivine-clinopyroxene-phyric basalts in satellite cones of the major edifices. Many of the edifices consist of complex caldera systems. Eruptions from and degradation of these edifices were probably tsunamigenic. Many of the hydrothermal systems developed within the edifices are likely destroyed during the sector collapses which are the characteristic edifice degradation mode. There are three backarc spreading systems along this margin: the Havre Trough, Valu Fa-Eastern Lau Spreading Centre, and the nascent Fonualei Rifts. The latter are particularly notable in having captured the entire suprasubduction zone magmatic flux for a distance of about 150 km, shutting down the adjacent volcanic front arc volcanoes.

The structure and hydrodynamics of the raceway zone of a blast furnace was studied on a cold model representing a sector containing two tuyeres. The model differed from the usual in that it was prov- ided with continuous flow of the coke layer at pre- determined rates, had provision for changing the tuyere parameters (diameter, protrusion, inclinat- ion) and irrigation of the layer with liquid. A combination probe was developed which per- mitted simultaneous measurement of the pressure field both across the area and through the height of the layer as well as determining the topography of the raceway. The velocity fields in the layer were measured with a specially made impulse thermo- anemometer. The determining criteria of the model were taken as the relationships between the energy of the blast and the particles, the dimensions of the raceway and the cross-section of the tuyere. The model established the effects of the tuy- ere structural parameters, blast parameters and amount of liquid products of smelting on the con- figuration of the raceway, the structure of the layer, pressure and velocity fields in the vicinity of the tuyeres and in the vertical direction through the layer. The properties of the raceway formation and the structure of the layer in motion have been clarified.

Geotechnical investigations have played a key role in influencing decisions for development of the Porgera Gold Project in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. Porgera is located 130 km west-northwest of Mt. Hagen in steep mountainous terrain with high rainfall. Much of the site is underlain by weak mudstone of the Chim Formation and creeping colluvial soils. Landsliding is common on the steeper slopes and in the valley floors. Structures have had to be sited to avoid areas susceptible to these movements. Early stage feasibility investigations included studies of tailings dam and waste rock dump sites, processing plant sites and hydroelectriic schemes. Further studies, leading into the design stage included the Enga Highway upgrading, water supply and power supply schemes. As construction for the project proceeds geotechnical input remains at a high level, with emphasis now on maintaining viable stable sites and refining data on which designs were based.

For several decades miners have been obliged to maintain a vast supply of sharp steels at the working face to meet the hungry needs of rock-drills. In medium and large size mines this has meant the setting up of an organisation to store steels, to make and sharpen bits with all the complication and skill of forging, hot milling and heat treatment, and to transport sharp and dulled steels to and from the working face with all its labour, wastage, and inconvenience to other mining operations.In a mine with 250 rock-drills in use, a flow of more than 60,000 sharpened steels each month has to be maintained to keep the machines fully employed, so some idea of the magnitude of this problem may be grasped.For a long time it has been apparent that it is mainly the bit itself that wears, and many attempts have been made to reduce the enormity of the problem by providing detachable steel bits which could either be used once and rejected, or sharpened three or four times before rejection.At the same time metallurgists have striven to 'improve the quality of the steel and the heat treatment afforded it so that a bit, readily workable In a normal mine drill-shop, could be produced having a high resistance to wear and fatigue; but, although various alloy steels have been marketed, it is still usual to find many mines relying on a "straight" carbon (0.6 - 0.9% C.) steel for their drill steels.Since 1915 increasing use has been made of tungstencarbide as a cutting implement in the engineering industry. A mathematical model for gas flow dynamics and heat and mass transfer processes occuring in the tuyere raceways and in the zone of the final for- mation and heating of pig iron and slag has been developed and simulated on a digital computer. It takes into account the formation and size of the raceway zones, combustion of coke and its substit- utes, oxidation of the metal, radiation from the gases to the raceway boundaries, physical heat losses and the direct reduction of the pig iron elements below the raceway zones. To evaluate the distribution of heat produced by the oxidation of metal between gases and prod- ucts of smelting, the problem of heating the mat- erials in the raceways with the sources of heat in the materials under conditions of intensive gas circulation in the raceways is solved. To determine the amount of heat transferred by radiation from the gas to the boundaries of the raceways, the problem of radiant heat transfer be- tween two grey bodies forming a closed system is solved. Using the structural parameters of the furn- ace, the inlet parameters of the combination blast and exit parameters of the melt, the model permits the calculation of the temperatures of materials entering and leaving the raceways and also the res- idual temperature of the gases, which qualitatively differs from the theoretical combustion temperature. Analysis of the operation of several different blast furnaces has shown that the overall picture of the interaction between gas flow dynamics, mass and heat transfer processes occuring in the race- ways and in the zone of final product formation, obtained with the aid of the model, now permits us to approach from a different position the deter- mination of the limiting factors in furnace operat- ion. It also allows us to explain certain phenom- ena observed in blast furnace practice and to dis- cover new relationships which may be used in analy- sis and control of the smelting process.

Ventilation and the environmental climate in the Campiano mine is the subject of this re- search. The mine is located in Southern Tuscany (Central Italy), a region where geothermal gra- dients are very high (three times the average gradient of the earth). The research produced interesting indications as to the influence of surface climatic conditions on the environmental parameters inside the mine. A close correlation has been found between dry-bulb temperature and humidity ratio of the air in the mine for dif- ferent metereological conditions and for differ- ent mass flow rate values. Variations in air enthalpy, caused only by the heat exchange with the rock walls during the flowing of the air through the mine, depends on the surface temperature values. Statistical analyses have been used to ex- press air enthalpy variations on surface tempe- ratures, on the variations of the humidity ratio that the air undergoes inside the mine and on the mass flora rate. The application in practice of the results will permit the identification of correct mea- sures to be adopted so that optimal microcli- matic conditions are produced in the mine.

The discovery of gold mineralization at the Manhattan mercury mine, Napa and Yolo counties, California in 1978 was the result of applying a new exploration ore deposit model in a region previously unprospected for gold. This discovery, the McLaughlin gold mine, owned and operated by Home-stake Mining Company, is a classic epithermal mercury-hot springs-gold deposit currently producing approximately 7,776,000 grams of gold annually.The exploration program that led to this discovery was based on a mercury-hot springs-gold genetic model. The model was developed using basic knowledge of ore-forming processes plus careful field observations made during examination of many known precious metal districts in. the Western U.S.A. Theoretically, hot spring systems could host gold deposits and, indeed, gold in these environments had been recognized for years. However, at the time of the McLaughlin discovery, it was not known to occur in sufficient quantities to inspire geologists to explore hot spring systems specifically for gold. Field observations recognized the presence of hot spring deposits and mercury mineralization asso-ciated with precious metal districts, (Bodie, California being a type example), and this associ-ation prompted the development of a hypothetical model. Subsequent exploration activities were directed towards the examination of mercury mines and prospects as potential targets for gold deposits. The model envisioned hot spring deposits (sinter) containing mercury mineralization at the surface with anomalous gold values grading downward into significant ore grade gold values.

THE Mount Morgan mine has, from the time of its historical discovery, been the subject of investigation and speculation by geologists and mining engineers. The first examination was made by Dr. R. L. Jack, in 1884. He came to the conclusion, from theevidence then available, that nothing but a thermal spring in the open air-otherwise a geyser-could account for the formation of the ore body. This report attracted world-wide attention at the time. Since then the mine has been examined by most of the leading geologists of Australia, and by many from elsewhere. In all cases the examination has only extended over a period' of a few days or weeks, and in the light of present knowledge of the deposit we know that sufficient data could not be obtained in such a short time to warrant the statement of definite conclusions. It is not to be wondered at, therefore, that a considerable difference of opinion exists as to the genesis of the deposit. That the company considered more detailed investigation necessary is shown by the fact that some thirteen years ago it employed Mr. Charles Walker as geological surveyor on the .mine. At that time also the data available was insufficient to give satisfactory results. It is, however, a matter for comment that none of the geological reports on the property took notice of the increase of copper values in the ore with depth, though the present workings and diamond-drilling...

THE exceptional rainfall characteristic of the West Coast of Tasmania, in conjunction with the rugged topography of the district, has always suggested the utilization of water-power, and from the earliest days of the Mount Lyell Company theeventual installation of a hydro-electric power scheme, making use of some near-lying lake, has constantly been kept in view. At the period of the inception of the company, however, the time was not ripe for such an undertaking, and it is only oflate that the various important considerations involved have sanctioned incun;ing the heavy expenditure necessary, with the positive assurance of permanently reaping the benefits expected. The West Coast of Tasmania contains many lakes of varioussites; situated at high levels, and, although the catchments of these lakes are not very extensive, still, the excessive rainfall is so constant over long periods that its regularity may be relied on as offsetting the limited catchments. The explanation of the abnormal rainfall is simply the circumstance that the West Coast Range forms the first high land barrier which is met by the moisture-laden westerly and north-westerly winds blowing off the Southern Ocean. By the time the clouds strike the mountains they ride very low, consequently the elevation of the range, the peaks of which do not exceed 3000 to 4000 ft. above the sea, is sufficient to cause a copious precipitation. Lake Margaret, which is situated five miles north of the reduction works, was first recognized as a possible source of waterpower by Mr. Hugh Ohrisp, a surveyor, who visited it about 1893-4. Magmatism is of first order significance in the extension process. Continental extension is terminated when sea-floor spreading commences, but sea-floor spreading will not commence if magmas do not begin to arrive in sufficient volumes. In the oceanic lithosphere, the rate of magma supply may determine whether sea-floor spreading takes place, or lithospheric extension as the result of normal fault arrays. In continental crust thickened as the result of previous compressional orogeny, the availability of magma may determine a completely different process. The author has examined metamorphic core complexes in a number of tectonic environments, in the North American Cordillera, in the Aegean Sea, Greece, and in the Solomon Sea, Papua and New Guinea. What these terrains have in common is a major collisional orogeny predating a major extensional event. The "roll back" of the lithospheric flexure associated with subduction can be seen as the "driving force" for extension in two of these cases. Metamorphic core complexes in these environments are characterized by domal exposures of crustal scale ductile shear zones, underneath which massive plutonic complexes have been formed. Emplacement of these plutons is associated with anatexis of the surrounding rocks. Migmatite complexes are well developed in the Aegean and Solomon Sea core complexes, and in some core complexes in the Basin and Range. Chains of core complexes can be explained as the result of basaltic and andesitic magmas derived from a linear belt of relatively hot rising asthenosphere, in a zone of attempted continental "break up". It is argued that core complexes are the results of magmas derived from relatively short lived mantle "hot spots" impingeing on extending continental crust which has been overthickened during previous compressional orogeny.

Recent tailings dam failures have heightened public awareness of the hazard posed by storage facilities for mining waste, illustrating the need for a more critical examination of tailings dam breach mechanisms and the potential mobility of liquefied tailings. Knowledge from tailings dam breach studies will help improve safety and risk management through more accurate inundation maps, dam consequence classifications and emergency preparedness plans. Tailings dams differ from conventional water retaining dams, although dam breach relationships used in practice rely heavily on relationships derived for breach processes from the latter. Physical modelling offers a controlled environment to advance the understanding of tailings dam breach processes, thereby allowing for modelling of simple geometry and boundary conditions to test hypotheses. The performed experiments investigate prototypical tailings dam configurations and material behaviour, with the objective of validating numerical models that will enable practitioners to better assess and mitigate tailings flows resulting from tailings dam failures. Research conducted in the Queen’s University Landslide Flume at the Coastal Engineering Laboratory has investigated the breaching of 1 m high dams with tailings geometry by overtopping initiated by a v-notch incised in the dam crest. This paper presents the initial results of the next stage of this research comparing the outflow hydrograph following loss of containment caused by shear failure to overtopping initiated by notch flow. The two dam experiments presented are constructed with similar dam and reservoir geometries allowing for a direct comparison of the effect on the outflow hydrograph of each failure event. Preliminary outcomes suggest that although both dam failure events are triggered from separate mechanisms their geometries allow for similar values of Q_peak to be reached. Future work is currently planned to expand the shear test series to explore the influence of failure mechanism on the outflow hydrograph.

It was demonstrated that the stable propagation of the explosive process is possible in low-density emulsion explosives (EEs) obtained through mixing of emulsion with a significant amount of expanded polystyrene (or other similar) granules. Such a process takes place in the form of a detonation-like wave of emulsion drops in explosive gas streams flowing out of the high-pressure area of the reaction zone.Chemical reaction in such EEs takes place in the form of surface combustion of emulsion particles interacting with the gas stream.A method was developed for determining parameters of decomposition of low-density EEs, and it was demonstrated that a gradual pressure increase takes place in products during the explosion of such EEs.The performed analytical research allowed low-density EEs (obtained through mixing of emulsion with a significant amount of expanded polystyrene) to be recommended for smooth blasting.Industrial-experimental blasts at quarries of Ural and Siberia, with extreme positioning of sides and using low-density EEs, have confirmed the viability of the recommendations given.The obtained results are useful in the advancement of smooth blasting technology using low-density EEs.CITATION:Gorinov, S A and Maslov, I Y, 2015. Cameco Corporation operates the high-grade 140 tpd fly-in/fly-out underground McArthur River Uranium Mine in Northern Saskatchewan in a joint venture with Cogema Resources Inc. Reserve grade is in excess of 20 per cent U3O8 with current mining grade averaging 16 per cent U3O8. Due to the high radiation potential of the ore, the non-entry mining method of raiseboring was chosen to minimise worker radiation exposure potential. The raisebore and extraction horizons are located in waste rock with the orebody located between horizons. Ore produced by raiseboring is delivered by LHD to an underground SAG mill and is then hydraulically hoisted to surface receiving facilities after underground thickening to 50 per cent solids by weight. Concrete backfilling is utilised. The orebodies at McArthur River are adjacent to water bearing sandstone. Ground freezing is therefore employed to isolate the ore from this water bearing ground. Calcium chloride brine at -35¦C is circulated through a series of cased boreholes to establish freeze walls up to 25 metres in thickness. At 18 000 000 lb of low cost U3O8 production per annum, McArthur River ranks as the worldsÆ largest uranium mine. Over 50 per cent of the workforce resides in this sparsely populated area of Canada with approximately 40 per cent being of aboriginal ancestry. Site operations must cater for winter temperatures as low as -50¦C.

BHP-Utah Coal Limited operates 33 draglines of varying sizes in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland. The group's operations with draglines commenced in 1963 with the establishment of opencut operations at the then TPM Moura Mine and continued through expansion of that mine, the commissioning of the Utah Development Company Blackwater Mine in 1968, and the subsequent establishment of six (6) other large opencut mines, all in the general area over the next fourteen years. These operations generally commenced with boxcuts on the sub-crop at depths of 15 to 25 metres. Over the years, depths have increased so that average depths now are in the 45 to 50m range. It was soon realised that dragline operations would have to be supplemented with additional stripping equipment. In 1981, a symposium "45m and Beyond" was held in Rockhampton to assess the problems associated with such "deep" stripping. Subsequently, dragline operations have continued and although addi- tional stripping capacity has been added, in many instances, draglines have been used and are being used to dig depths greater than 45m, some- times as much as 65 to 70m.

The uncertainty of geomaterials properties is commonly encountered in resource engineering applications, especially in mining engineering where the rock mass texture, joints, fractures and damage zones can impose the mining method and operation cycles. In the present research work, we focus on the elastic properties of rock masses. We use stochastic numerical simulation of fractured rock masses to estimate their Young moduli. The procedure starts with field mapping campaigns which are conducted to evaluate the locations, dip angles, strike and trace lengths of pre-existing fractures. We develop statistical law parameters of the natural fracture network to represent the weakness patterns. In addition, we use HLA-Dissim, a recently developed and validated Matlab program, to simulate the propagation of monochromatic longitudinal waves and derive the equivalent elastic modulus of fractured rock masses. Such procedure applies within a simulation domain, which is greater than an Elementary Representative Volume.At a second stage, we conduct finite element simulations to validate the previous approach. The matrix and the actual fractures zones are reproduced in the model to mimic the natural set-up. The block is excited on particular positions and its response is evaluated on predefined spots. Real field rock fracture mapping data and monitored single-hole blast induced vibrations are used to validate the theoretical and numerical approaches discussed herein. Comparison between the simulated and measured vibration records shows a great agreement which confirms that the proposed methodology has a full potential to predict and optimise multihole/multidelay blast-induced vibrations.CITATION:Hamdi, E and Karrech, A, 2015. White phosphorus (P4) is a critical element in industry, but its current production from phosphate rock using the carbothermal reduction method raises significant environmental and health concerns. This pressing issue necessitates the development of new technologies that facilitate the sustainable production of P4. In response, my team is actively developing an innovative, coke-free approach for white phosphorus production. This method involves the dissolution of phosphate rock in molten CaCl2, followed by the extraction of P4 through electrochemistry at relatively low temperatures. Moreover, this approach has the potential to utilise phosphate-bearing solid wastes as raw materials, further enhancing its environmental benefits. By employing this cutting-edge technique, we aim to revolutionise the phosphorus chemical industry towards greener and more sustainable practices. This paper provides evidence of the feasibility and effectiveness of our proposed approach.
