Magnetite ore blending has yielded signifi cant performance improvements in OneSteel’s magnetite concentrator. The magnetite concentrator beneficiates magnetite ore from the Iron Magnet Deposit and produces concentrate, which is pelletised, then fed to the OneSteel Whyalla blast furnace. Concentrator feed variability severely detracts from the concentrator’s performance, affecting both concentrate yield and grade, which impacts on all downstream processing costs.A coordinated approach has integrated mine planning, geological modelling and grade control, to minimise concentrator feed variability, through effective ore blending throughout the mining and stockpiling process.Mine planning personnel design shots that extend the full width of the orebody and hence across the stratigraphic profi le. Based on geological information contained in block-outs and in consultation with Geology, the Grade Control team allocates material to each primary stockpile, potentially from every stratigraphic domane in the orebody. This ensures primary stockpiles are designed with maximum practical homogeneity and consistency.Using only primary movement, the allocated ore is stockpiled in a layer-cake fashion. The ore is pimple dumped across the width of the stockpile footprint and on completion of a layer, it is dozed flat with an access ramp that allows dumping to commence on the next lift. The primary stockpiles are reclaimed normal to build direction and the magnetite is crushed, all in, to a concentrator feed stockpile.The ore is sampled at the crusher from a falling stream cut. These assay data, are used for benchmarking and control charting the grade and variability of concentrator feed stockpiles. The concentrator feed stockpiles have demonstrated a statistically signifi cant reduction of within pile variation, between pile variation and pile to pile variation, primarily attributable to the development of ore blending. The concentrator has seen sustained, improved performance as a direct result, which translates into lower concentrate cost per tonne and improved yield and quality.

In the past three years, the company has been involved in six 8? coring projects in a variety of geographies and geologies, including iron ore, coal and uranium. FORACO has developed proprietary equipment and techniques to deliver cost-effective LDC samples with outstanding core recovery.The FORACO LDC sampling system is hands free, with mechanised rod and corebarrel handing to minimise the risk of manual handling injuries. Sample volumes are six times PQ (the common industry standard for large core samples), with core recoveries consistently above 96 per cent in extremely difficult formations.Eight inch coring is a conventional coring system suited to hole depths up to 150 m. There are many small to medium carbonate hosted complex zinc containing deposits where the zinc is not economically recoverable either as concentrate or metal. High grade (>20% Zn) run of mine ore can be processed but even this material gives relatively poor returns. Considerable effort has gone into developing new technology for either upgrading the ore and/or recovering zinc metal hydrometallurgically but there has been limited success. Minetometal has developed a process capable of economically treating these deposits to give marketable lead and zinc products. This paper reviews alternative processes for these ores and gives a detailed description of the Minetometal Process. CITATION: Shaw, R, 2018. Leaders have invested heavily in traditional safety management to improve safety performance over the years. This primarily involved: • fixing the environment (eliminating the hazard) • improving the system (more/less rules, procedures etc) • making safety more conscious (more/better interactions about the importance of safety). These approaches have helped improve safety performance significantly during the last 50 years and will continue to play a role in the future. Although these approaches may be part of an overall solution, they are not enough to prevent many incidents. Today, these three approaches are used more than before, and are used better than ever before. Yet, workplace fatalities in Australia have stagnated from 2013 to 2019, as have the number of incidents, even serious ones. In the USA, workplace fatalities have increased by 15 per cent in the same period.

The formation of magmatic oxide ore deposits hosted in chemically-evolved layered gabbroic intrusions is attributed to a variety of petrological processes, but there is little to no consensus on the general applicability of each model. Complicating the matter further is that many layered gabbroic intrusions are spatially and temporally associated with alkaline A-type granites, suggesting that there is a petrogenetic relationship between the two types of chemically different rocks. Our experimental results show that petrological modelling using a starting composition of high-Ti basalt from the Emeishan large igneous province can produce evolved silicic liquids that resemble the compositions of microgranular enclaves from the syenitic unit of the bimodal, oxide ore-bearing Baima igneous complex. The experimental results confirm that bimodal gabbro-granitoid complexes can form from a common parental magma and that early crystallisation of Ti-rich magnetite can explain the formation of the oxide ore deposits in the lower parts of the layered gabbroic intrusions. We conclude that crystallisation of a typical high-Ti basaltic parental magma can produce world-class giant magmatic oxide ore deposits and that the occurrence of some alkaline granites may be an indicator of their presence.CITATION:Shellnutt, J G, Hsia, T W-Y, Liu, T-C and Iizuka, Y, 2015. Water has played a key role in the Pilbara’s 60-year history of iron ore operations. In contrast to many of the current-day mining environments, iron ore mining was initially hosted by geological formations that were typically above the water table. Such mining operations required no dewatering or dewatering at rates that were less than mine and mining township requirements. The challenge for these operations was not pit dewatering but water supply for mining operations and municipal supply for nascent mining towns.The current industry sees new deposit styles being increasingly targeted, including channel iron and Marra Mamba Formation deposits. These deposits are often lower in the landscape and can require extensive dewatering. Furthermore, increased water demand for ore beneficiation has resulted in major programs of water-supply borefield development. Added to this is the emergence of magnetite projects and their significant levels of water use in ore beneficiation.The large volumes of water that are being extracted to support Pilbara iron ore mining is attracting attention. The Western Australian Department of Water has recently commissioned a study to assess the potential use of surplus mine water as a medium- to long-term supply for irrigated agriculture.This paper outlines the changing landscape of water management in Pilbara iron ore operations and explores strategies for maximising mining productivity. "The Caijiaying lead zinc mine is located in China, north-west of Beijing, in Hebei Province. The region experiences severe winters, below -35°C, and warm summers, up to 30°C. The mine and concentrator commenced operations in the second half of 2005 with a conventional tailings disposal system consisting of a tailings dam with peripheral ring main discharge and central water recovery. A second similar dam sharing one common wall was added later. In view of the extreme winter conditions tailings lines and ring mains plus spigots, together with return water lines, require insulation and electrical trace heating. The volume of process water trapped as ice in the tailings dam ponds each winter is significant. This seasonal variation presents a major difficulty in the management of process water availability. Although Caijiaying is an underground mine there was no backfill plant at the start of operations. As plant throughput increased more quickly than originally anticipated, tailings storage capacity became a prime concern. The construction of a backfill plant in 2007 reduced the pressure on surface tailings storage area requirements, but as suitable land on which to construct further tailings storage was both expensive and difficult to acquire, a more efficient use of the available area was required. Dry tailings storage, where flotation tailings are filtered to provide an immediate return of process water plus ‘dry’ tailings filter cake for stacking, provided an answer to both the land area required, and the water management difficulties. The paper details the reasoning behind the change and the benefits obtained at Caijiaying by moving from ‘wet’ tailings storage to ‘dry’ tailings storage.Citation:Waldram, J T and Jia, R, 2016. The west coast of New Zealand’s south island is host to a large number of placer goldfields that stretch from the Westport area in the north to Gillespies Beach in the south and inland to the foothills of the Southern Alps. This area is host to a large number of alluvial, glacial and strand line deposits ageing in range from Recent to Tertiary. In recent years exploration models have been developed for off shore placer deposits on the continental shelf.Gold mining on the west coast has exploited placer gold resources from the 1860s to present, and with the recent surge in the gold price the industry is currently undergoing a resurgence. The current increase in mining is dominated by small-scale mechanical operations usually involving one to two people at each site; a few larger operations also exist such as the Grey River Dredge.Mining methods range from using floating bucket dredges to small diggers. Some of the mining technologies used are similar to those employed during the great gold rushes of the 19th century. Exploration and grade control techniques can be very rudimentary often relying on previous sampling programs or wide spaced bulk sample drill holes. Some bulk sample drilling is used on the larger operations as a form of grade control, most of the small operations tend not to use any ore control sampling prior to mining. Extraction techniques relying on simple gravity based designs with riffle tables or spirals are the most commonly used. Environmental standards are very high within New Zealand and require operators to return mined areas to preagreed to landforms. The high rainfall experienced on the west coast causes challenges to operators in regard to water quality. Technical issues combined with often limited capital provide for challenges to the operations.

"With the recent advancement in drill core imaging systems, a large volume of high resolution drill core images can now be rapidly collected and mineralogically classified. This paper introduces a novel semi-automated method for rapid prediction of process engineering parameters from this type of image. The aim is to allow for a rapid and low-cost assessment of the ore processing variability within a mineral deposit with a reduced amount of metallurgical test work. This method will see its application primarily in the project evaluation phase, where proper evaluation of the processing variability of the orebody normally requires a prolonged and costly metallurgical test work program. Applying this image-based texture analysis method on the mineralogical classified drill core images, the ores are classified according to their textures. For each engineering parameter, a small number of physical test work is required to produce a data set for training and testing of the predictive model. Strain-based failure criteria have several advantages over stress-based failure criteria: they can account for elastic and inelastic strains; they utilise direct, observable effects instead of inferred effects (strain gauges versus stress estimates) and they model complete stress-strain curves, including prepeak, non-linear elasticity and post-peak strain weakening. In this study, a strain-based failure criterion derived from thermodynamic first principles utilising the concepts of continuum damage mechanics is presented. Furthermore, implementation of this failure criterion into a finite element simulation is demonstrated and applied to the stability of underground mining coal pillars.In numerical studies, pillar strength is usually expressed in terms of critical stresses or stress-based failure criteria where scaling with pillar width and height is common. Previous publications have employed the finite element method for pillar stability analysis using stress-based failure criterion, such as Mohr-Coulomb and Hoek-Brown, or stress-based scalar damage models.A novel constitutive material model, which takes into consideration anisotropy as well as elastic strain and damage as state variables, has been developed and is presented in this paper. The damage threshold and its evolution are strain-controlled, and coupling of the state variables is achieved through the damage-induced degradation of the elasticity tensor. This material model is implemented into the finite element software Abaqus and can be applied to 3D problems.Initial results show that this new material model is capable of describing the non-linear behaviour of geomaterials commonly observed before peak strength is reached as well as post-peak strain softening. "This paper discusses the successful use of bituminous geomembranes (BGMs) in mining applications since their development in 1974. It explains and illustrates the structure of a BGM composite, which is a geomembrane manufactured by impregnating a polyester geotextile with a compound of bitumen, elastomer and filler. Examples of applications of BGMs in the mining industry are also presented in the following contexts.Storage of solid waste: storage of mining waste at mines in Canada heap leach pads in France, Peru, Chile and Turkey at the base of a mining waste landfill in Brazil capping of solid mining waste in Chile and Canada temporary capping of mining stockpiles in Australia (with possible reuse of the BGM for other works).Examples of the application of BGMs for the storage of liquid waste in mining containment reservoirs in Canada, Guatemala and Peru will also be given.For each example given, reasons are supplied that supported the choice of BGMs by the clients and consultants, drawn from the following advantages of the BGM:BGMs have excellent puncture strength, due to the internal polyester reinforcement, as well as excellent ultraviolet resistance. This often eliminates the need for a cushion geotextile or cover soil over the BGM.BGMs have a very long life expectancy, in excess of 300 years, in subsoil conditions (Breul et al, 2004).BGMs can be installed in very harsh climatic conditions. They are suitable for high wind environments as their heavy mass per square metre makes them resistant to wind uplift. The low coefficient of thermal expansion means that BGMs are suitable for installation in mines where very low or very high temperatures are expected. This reduces construction delays and allows for a quicker use of the mining facility.The fact that the BGM can be installed by the mine’s own workforce, after appropriate training from the BGM manufacturer, allows for a more flexible construction sequence on the mine.Ability of the BGM to connect to other materials such as concrete, steel, rock and other geomembranes that may be on the mine site.The technical advantages of a BGM enabled the engineering consultants to prepare solutions for their mining clients that had a lower environmental risk, had a faster completion schedule and were overall a cheaper option than with a polymeric geomembrane.CITATION:Breul, B and McIlwraith, R, 2015. While coal seam gas is considered to be an unconventional gas, the proliferation of areas under exploration and development mean that it is rapidly becoming main stream. The potential of New Zealand's coals to produce coal seam gas has been recognised for some time. However, key market drivers have not been suitable for the progression of this potential into reality. Kenham Holdings Ltd and CRL Energy Ltd, recognising the potential for the gas in New Zealand have initiated what is the largest ever assessment of New Zealand's coal seam gas potential. The premature demise of the giant Maui field has raised the focus of new gas developments and has increased interest in what we are doing. Over the past couple of years Kenham Holdings Ltd and CRL Energy Ltd have approached the assessment of the coal seam gas potential in a staged programme. Preliminary assessment of the data on the permit areas indicates that the potential resource may be up to 500 PJ. To date, preliminary appraisals have been completed or are underway on a significant number of fields. Exploratory drilling has been completed or initiated on several of those fields, with results from this work being fed into the preliminary modelling as it has become available. Given that in many of these areas there is no pre-existing information concerning their gas potential and world wide experience with lignite is practically nonexistent, it has been a steep learning curve with many surprises. However, initial gas content results and preliminary gas flow models have been on the whole, rather pleasing, with the commerciality of some developments already apparent.

The Emmaville district is located in the northern part of the New England region of New South Wales some 400 miles north of Sypney. Better known for its substantial production of tin and tungsten ores, the Emmaville district has also been the centre of a small and somewhat sporadic production of copper, arsenic, silver, lead and zinc. This production has come principally from three mines-Webb's Silver Mine, Webb's Consols and, to a lesser extent, Pye's Creek Silver Mine.The ores from these mixed sulphide deposits are texturally and mineralogically complex and the problems of beneficiation are rather formidable.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe main rock type of the Emmanville district is a dark, brown to blackish massive siltstone of Permian age which overlies acid volcanics possibly also of Permian age. In places the siltstone gives way to conglomerates and standstones with discontinuous lenses of calcareous sediments (David, 1887).The whole series is folded but because of the massive character of the more expansive siltstone, detailed structure is difficult to delineate.Toward the close of Permian time the area was intruded by a series of intermediate to acid plutonic and hypabyssal rocks. Mineralization within the region is ascribed to the more acid of these intrusives-granodiorite, granite, and quartz-felspar porphyry (Lawrence, 1957, 1960).No intrusive rocks outcrop in the immediate neighbourhood of Webb's Silver Mine though granite occurs two miles...

This paper presents a rationale for selecting appropriate support elements which combine to form a support system to maintain stability in mines subjected to both strainburst and the shaking that occurs from fault slip. The overall approach was developed during the 'case for safety' study undertaken to allow the then Beaconsfield Gold mine (now Tasmania mine) to resume development and production after the 25 April 2006 ground-fall and fatality that received worldwide publicity. Issues of the sometimes competing requirements of support element performance during dynamic loading are discussed and the need for support flexibility is contrasted with the usual high support element stiffness required when these are used to reinforce rock masses. An example is presented to show the steps and technical details required to design each component of a support system to counter the de-stabilising effects of seismicity.

This abstract discusses a heap leach copper mine that was failing to perform and as a result was not meeting targeted production. The mine had numerous technical challenges including: high water inflows, low levels of geotechnical monitoring, performance issues with mining, resource model and grade control reconciliation issues, and unexplained low levels of performance from the heap leaching operations. A team from various organisations with specialist skill sets including: a forensic accountant, the owner’s representative and a mining engineer, was arranged to visit the site. The task was to investigate the situation and determine what could be done to turn the performance of the mine around. After an initial assessment in late 2018, efforts were directed to better understanding the operations and improving the performance of the site through preventative management. A key part included the creation of production forecasts that could be achieved that would help restore confidence in the operations. Uncertainty in the mine achieving production forecasts and the performance of the heap leaching operations were contributing to the decline of the operations. Investigations uncovered the fact that while the resource model could reliably predict total copper, a lack of sequential leach data meant the accurate prediction of soluble and insoluble copper species, both important for heap leaching, was difficult to do with any degree of certainty. The crushing and mining contractors also appeared to have suffered somewhat from a lack of management by the owner’s team and performance had affected the production of copper. Collaboration and management were used by the team to understand and stabilise the operations. Ongoing collaborative efforts by the management team, site personnel and contractors resulted in a positive outcome for the owners and their mine – and could at yours.

OZ Minerals' Prominent Hill copper-gold concentrator is located 130 kilometres south east of the town of Coober Pedy in the Gawler Craton of South Australia. The concentrator was built in 2008 and commenced commercial production in early 2009. The Prominent Hill concentrator is comprised of a conventional grinding and flotation processing plant with a 9.6Mtpa ore throughput capacity. The flotation circuit includes six rougher cells, an IsaMill for regrinding the rougher concentrate and a Jameson cell heading up the three stage conventional cell cleaner circuit. In total there are four level controllers in the rougher train and ten level controllers in the cleaning circuit for eighteen cells.Generic proportional – integral and derivative (PID) control used on the level controllers alone propagated any disturbances downstream in the circuit that were generated from the grinding circuit, hoppers, between cells and interconnected banks of cells, having a negative impact on plant performance. To better control such disturbances, FloatStar level stabiliser was selected for installation on the flotation circuit to account for the interaction between the cells. Multivariable control was also installed on the five concentrate hoppers to maintain consistent feed to the cells and to the IsaMill. An additional area identified for optimisation in the flotation circuit was the mass pull rate from the rougher cells. FloatStar flow optimiser was selected to be installed subsequent to the FloatStar level stabiliser. This allowed for a unified, consistent and optimal approach to running the rougher circuit. This paper describes the improvement in the stabilisation of the circuit achieved by the FloatStar level stabiliser by using the interaction matrix between cell level controllers and the results and benefits of implementing the FloatStar flow optimiser on the rougher train.

The Ernest Henry Mine is an open pit copper-gold mining operation located in north-west Queensland, Australia. It is owned and operated by Xstrata Copper with a current concentrator throughput of approximately ten million tonnes per annum. The pit will cease mining towards the end of 2010. Extensive surface diamond drilling has confirmed an extension of the orebody to depths of 1000 m below surface. A prefeasibility study was commissioned in late 2006 to investigate underground mining options with the preferred mining method being an inclined sublevel cave. In February 2008 mining of a decline commenced in conjunction with a feasibility study to further investigate the project. Work from the prefeasibility study indicates that an underground crusher, conveyor and hoisting shaft could be utilised to crush and transport broken ore from the sublevel cave workings to the concentrator. The study suggests that a production rate of five million tonnes per annum could be achieved and sustained for up to ten years. Ventilation designs and requirements will form a large section of the feasibility study. This paper will detail investigations of preliminary ventilation network designs of the proposed sublevel cave. Work has been completed using both Ventsim and VumA ventilation simulation packages. Ventsim was used to provide preliminary estimations and suggest alternatives for: surface fan duties;airflow characteristics (direction, velocity, pressure and quantity); andventilation network design in key mine areas. With mining activities reaching depths in excess of 1000 m below surface an analysis of heat conditions should be conducted. The VumA software package was used to model the thermal properties of the ventilation system. This model will provide a basis for the preliminary decisions on refrigeration requirements for the mine.

When the Paulsens operation was poised to be placed on care and maintenance, Bill Beament and the rest of the Northern Star Resources (NSR) team capitalised on the opportunity to send the Ashburton region’s only operating gold mine into the record books.A three-stage strategy was devised by NSR to pay off the acquisition and maximise the return from the operation. The first stage was to mine the 55 000 oz mine plan and pay off the cost of the acquisition, then maintain profitable production beyond the seven months and re-establish a mine life. The second stage involved an early commitment to a 220 m long diamond drill drive being placed in the hanging wall of the orebody from which the extensions of the orebody could be further explored, allowing the second stage of the plan to come into effect and extend the mine life by converting Inferred Resources into the mine plan. The third stage of the initial plan was to utilise this drill drive and continue to drill deeper holes beyond the current limit of drilling in the ore zones to extend the orebody and increase the mine’s life.With an ever growing desire to further expand, the young company took on the bold move of establishing its own mining services division. A critical element to the success of this was ensuring that the right people were recruited with the appropriate specialised skill sets.Aligning common goals amongst all NSR team members, from the board and senior management to the work force on site, was critical to integrate the new and driven direction that Paulsens had adopted. It was essential to change the focus and a shift in all employees’ attitudes and values from a mine that was all but down and out, to a site that wanted to be kicking some serious goals.Teaming together a passionate and driven leader with a strong allied workforce was always going to put NSR in the best position possible to make Paulsens the success story that it now is. Under platform exhaust (UPE) systems are often designed into metro stations as a means of removing heat generated by trains as they come to a halt in the platform. These systems are designed to extract heat from the brakes and brake resistors directly at the source in order to capture as much heat as possible before it can enter the public areas of the station, or contribute to the temperature build-up in the tunnels. Due to space requirements for the associated duct and air handling units, the UPE plays a significant role in the geometric design of the platform and station as a whole.In recent years questions have arisen as to the effectiveness of UPE systems. However, very little data is available for designers to use when making important decisions on the station designs for new metro systems. This is important as significant savings could be achieved by omitting or re-designing these systems for new build stations; not only due to the capital costs of space provision for the duct itself but also due to the associated operation and maintenance cost of the UPE system.This paper will present recent measurements of the UPE system of the Copenhagen metro together with one-dimensional (1D) simulations, looking at typical dispersion of heat into the station plenum box and air exchange through draught relief shafts as the train enters the station in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the UPE system. The aim of this paper is to disseminate the results of measurements and analysis to increase awareness of the issue and to provide discussion relevant to designers in their evaluation of heat removal systems in new build station designs.

Employing gravity recovery for coarsely liberated gold and sulfide ores has potential to lead to a signifi cant reduction in the energy required for comminution and ultimately can have a significant impact on gold processing. Most of the recognised metallurgical tools at our disposal currently have been designed around recovery of relatively finely ground minerals. In order to change the paradigm of fine grind for liberation, a new set of tools need to be recognised that are capable of separations in the coarser size fractions. Some of these tools already exist and some need to be developed but the key is the way in which the fl ow sheets are arranged. A very strong understanding is required in the existing tools and their capabilities before these new flow sheets can be optimised. Only when we understand the existing gaps in technology can we start to fill these positions with new candidates. Many ores when crushed liberate their gold bearing minerals at coarser sizes than current practice would suggest (Figure 1). In order to characterise this response in ores it is necessary to utilise some new techniques in the lab such as gravity separation and ore sorting at the sizes greater than 15 mm followed by gravity recovery on fractions from 15 mm down to 150 ¦m. The most difficult range has been the mid-sized fraction from 4.0 mm down to around 150 ¦m. This is the size range in which many ores show economic liberation starting to occur and coincidentally this is the range in which many commonly used metallurgical processes reach their operational limits due to physical constraints. Examples of these processes are flotation, hydrocyclones and whole ore leach in agitated tanks which are currently the mainstays of the processing fraternity. This is an ABSTRACT ONLY.
