This paper describes the principle and operation of small hydrocyclones for use in the coal, minerals and other process industries. The principles for selecting a hydrocyclone for an application are also discussed. Typic- al uses and installations in various industries are described.

Silver-lead ores are widely distributed through- out the Mount Lofty and Flinders Ranges, but none of the deposits is large. Historically the Glen Osmond Mines are the most significant as the site of the first metalliferous mining in Australia, but Talisker was one of the three largest producers of silver-lead in a state whose mining history is dom- inated by copper. The mine is located in a magnificent natural setting on Talisker Conservation Park, near Cape Jervis, southwest of Adelaide (Figure 1). It is exempt from the operations of the Mining Act and listed on the Register of State Heritage Items. The mine and associated township of Silverton were dominated by Cornish influences during the period of principal activity between 1862 and 1872. Silverton, located on a ridge overlooking the mine, grew to a population of about 300 at its peak in 1870 and the area was very much another 'little Cornwall'.

Gold deposits in the Chirano district in south-west Ghana are hosted in a variety of structural settings along the Chirano shear zone (CSZ), in Paleoproterozoic rocks of the Sefwi-Bibiani belt. Most gold mineralisation occurs in strongly sheared and hydrothermally altered Birimian mafic igneous rocks and tonalite intrusions within the CSZ. A recent program of open pit structural mapping, core logging, and three-dimensional modelling helped to define deposit-scale structural controls on gold mineralisation. These include strain domains, shear zone flexures, shear zone intersections and vein arrays associated with host-rock competency contrasts. Interestingly, the plunge of higher-grade shoots in some deposits appears to be associated with the intersection of the CSZ and broadly folded Tarkwaian sedimentary rocks, which are not significant gold hosts in the Chirano district. This paper presents the results of 3D modelling that were used to define structural controls on mineralisation in several open pits and one underground mine along a 9 km length of the CSZ. LeapfrogÖ software was particularly useful because it highlighted the orientations of structural features that focused hydrothermal fluid flow during alteration and mineralisation. The improved understanding of structural controls provided two main benefits: near-mine exploration drill targets and better definition of structural domains for resource estimation.

Historical research has played a significant role in the rebirth of the Bendigo Goldfield. The historical research undertaken by the company has been directed to specific areas such as verifying the total gold production of the field, the gold production from defined blocks on each of the major anticlines, the extent of workings of each mine which exceeded 200 m depth, the size and style of reefs mined in each shaft and also within specific domains of the field. Application of this data has assisted in the determination of possible dimensions of different reef styles and the location of mineralisation within each reef system. Description of grade variation, percentage of quartz and the amount and species of accessory sulphide minerals, as well as early geotechnical observations accompanying stoping methodologies, provides valuable analogues for reef structure being defined in the current program. Historical information on shafts on the two anticlines the company is exploring has allowed the postulation and recognition of repetition of reef development within the same stratigraphy in the hinge zones of the adjacent folds. The similarities of mineralisation styles across the field within both specific lithological units and structural setting has had important implications in respect to exploration drill targeting and the estimation of grade and tonnes.

La Colosa, Colombia is a large gold-porphyry deposit currently undergoing feasibility studies by AngloGold Ashanti. This period of development allows the opportunity to apply innovative and emerging testing and modelling methods to provide a predictive geometallurgical recovery model for the deposit. By partnering with the AMIRA P843A Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling (GeMIII) research project, the geological and mineralogical data are analysed with respect to liberation and recovery methods. This will allow the variability in the geology and mineralogy of the deposit and key relationships recognised in the data to be included in the development of a model to help predict recoveries of the gold. Many aspects of the gold mineralisation such as gold paragenesis, associations, grain size and texture are determined and analysed using optical microscopy, Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA), and laser ablation (LA-ICP-MS). At La Colosa the gold has been located in sulfides (eg pyrite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite), silicates, along silicate phase boundaries, and among the pyrite-rich intermediate argillic alteration. Further testing and analysis will also determine if ‘invisible’ gold is present in the pyrite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite. Recovery methods can also be determined and tested after combining the results of mineralogy tests with other data (eg results of comminution tests). Indices for the mineralisation and recovery are developed using image analysis and analytical testing. These indices are correlated with recovery data from the company to develop a predictive block model for recovery. The goal is to develop cost-effective, efficient methods to analyse the mineralogy and geology of the deposit; understand the variability in the mineralogy, geology, and recovery; and construct a predictive geometallurgical recovery model.

May I, at the very outset of this second gathering, congratulate the Institute on the great progress that has been made in the interval. At the first meeting in New Zealand in the year 1903, I understand that less than 20 persons were present, and now in the large concourse before me I believe there are not fewer than 140 persons, while if every member of the Institute to-day where here there would be over 500 which is a great change from a membership of only 250 in 1903. I feel deeply appreciative of the honour you have conferred upon me by electing me your President for the year 1911. In return for the compliment, may I ask you to believe that I shall do everything in my power to further the interests of the Institute throughout the coming year.It is a great regret to me to realise that soon my work in New Zealand will be over. One of the significant changes which has occurred in the flotation sector of the minerals industry, over the last two decades, has been the successful development of the very large flotation machine. The last twenty years has seen the volume of the individual cell, available to the industry, increase by a factor of ten. Today, new mills, and existing mill modernization plans, can consider individual cell volumes as large as 85 m3 with the certainty that the metallurgical performance capability of the large machine is inherently as efficient as the smaller machine. The large flotation cell offers benefits to the user such as reduced floor space, lower total power, process control simplification, and reduced maintenance. However, the flotation machine size selection process, based on overall installation economics, must include such factors as process tonnage, flotation kinetics characteristics, and metallurgical performance objectives. This paper discusses the flotation machine size and circuit arrangement selection based on both metallurgical performance and economic considerations. A computer based flotation kinetic analysis technique, which has proven valuable in quantifying the metallurgical response of flotation circuits having different cell sizes and number, is utilized to illustrate the selection of cell size and arrangement best suited to a client's Requirement.

The low price of nickel which has prevailed since 1982 has dictated that unit production costs must be minimised. Early in the crisis, a decision was made within Western Mining Corporation to reduce unit costs by increased rates of production, not by a significant reduction in manpower. This paper details developments which have taken place at Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter to enable the higher production rates to be achieved, or to increase energy efficiency. It is significant that most developments were achieved without the need for capital expenditure.

Soil and groundwater beneath the Budelco zinc production plant at Budel-Dorplein (The Netherlands) are contaminated with metals and sulphate. To avoid contamination of nearby drinking water aquifers in the very distant future, a geohydrological containment system (GCS) and a microbial treatment plant for extracted contaminated groundwater have been developed. As a first step in the design of the system groundwater data from over 150 wells and geological profiles were used to model geohydrological conditions beneath the site. Several configurations of water-extraction wells were deduced from the model. Data gathered during additional fieldwork were then used to improve the model. Finally results that were calculated for the various configurations were used to select an optimal groundwater containment system. Currently some 5000 m3/day groundwater are extracted from a combination of 12 shallow and deep wells. Heavy metals and sulphate have to be removed from the extracted water before it can be discharged into the river system or used as process water. Several water treatment methods have been studied and pilot-tested at the site. The preferred and selected process is based on the activity of sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) and combines sulphate removal and heavy metal removal in one single step. The anaerobic bacteria reduce the sulphate to sulphide resulting in the precipitation of metal sulphides. A pilot plant gave promising results and a commercial-scale plant has been designed. The proposed design has been tested in a demonstration plant which included all main process units. Test results for all process units are presented. The collected information was then used to optimise the design of the commercial-scale plant. Special attention was paid to automation and safety items. Construction of the plant was finished in May 1992. Start-up, commissioning and operational experience are reported. The concentrations of metals and sulphate in the effluent of the SRB water treatment plant are well within the limits set by the authorities for discharge to public waters.

The iron ore mining industry is currently going through an adjustment from high to more moderate growth as China’s economy transitions from capital-intensive investment to a more services-oriented economy. We are now witnessing a renewed focus on productivity improvements and cost savings as planned expansions are completed. Despite the scale and importance that the mining industry plays in the global economy, innovation literature is generally more targeted at faster-moving industries with shorter innovation timeframes and lower capital requirements. To fill this gap, VCI set out to understand the state of innovation in the mining industry in 2014. This State of Play report aims to give an objective appraisal of the strengths and weaknesses of innovation in mining. The report has three sections covering both the structure and delivery of innovation in mining:Ecosystem – focused on understanding how the iron ore mining innovation ecosystem system works, including the roles of large and small miners, service companies, researchers and governments. Our recommendations focus on what is required for the system to work well and improve the level and quality of innovation in the industry.Strategy – how do companies define their innovation strategy in relation to their corporate strategy? How are these related to prevailing global and industry trends? How do they communicate this with their business? How successful are they? These are among the questions that this section attempts to answer. Our recommendations are pitched at the executive leadership of iron ore mining and service companies.Delivery – focused on how companies develop and deliver innovation, looking at the success of different structural options, leadership and culture, partnerships and the best approaches to change. In heavy minerals separation, the titanium and iron oxide phases are separated from silicates in the coarser particle size range (80 - 150 mm) using magnetic and electrostatic separators. With the ongoing challenge of heavy mineral ore deposits getting increasingly finer in particle size, conventional separation equipment suffers from the ability to process this material at the same throughput rate as coarser particles. A variety of magnetic separation technologies were developed to perform at a much finer particle size range, down to 2 mm in the clay industries mainly to remove titaniferrous oxide particles. Complementing the developments made on the physical aspects of magnetic separation, Cytec Industries has recently developed a ‘bolt-on’ chemical enhancement technology for magnetic separation (CEMS). This is to enable separation of finer particles, and weakly paramagnetic titanium phases from diamagnetic silicates that are not amenable to magnetic separation. This paper will provide an outline of the technology, illustrate its ability to process a wide variety of ores, and also discuss plant limitations. The major advantages of chemical enhancement technology to magnetic separation includes: simple dosing equipment extension to existing magnetic separation technology; ability to produce product of comparable quality with improved cost effectiveness, when compared to incumbent flotation; removal of impurity minerals over wider size range; enhanced removal of non-magnetic impurities; and improving the process robustness. Furthermore, chemical enhancement technology for magnetic separation has also emerged as a platform for removing impurities at lower levels in other mineral systems as well.

Gas and coal dust, as potential harmful elements (PHEs) produced during mining, are considered two serious threats to the safe mining and the health of miners because of its explosive and pathogenic properties. To solve this problem, compound reagents enhanced water spraying technology was used to control the gas and coal dust in excavation working face in this study, and spray testing platform and wind tunnel were used to investigated the suppression effect for gas and coal dust. In addition, sink test, and agglomeration experiments were also used to analyse its suppression mechanism. Testing results show that the dust reduction efficiencies of compound reagents enhanced water spraying technology for four different particle sizes were 80 per cent, 91.43 per cent, 94.74 per cent and 94.46 per cent, and improved by 14 per cent, 10.86 per cent, 8.42 per cent and 4.25 per cent compared to water spraying. Moreover, the gas suppression efficiency also can be increased more than 20 per cent. Sink test, and agglomeration experiments results show that compound reagent improves the spreading efficiency of the liquid on the surface of the coal by changing its wettability, and this process can not only slow down the desorption rate of gas by forming a water-sealing effect in the coal surface indicated, but also promote the agglomeration of fine-grained coal dust.

Small-scale mining operations are characterised by a large variety of equipment availability and a high level of operational flexibility. Mine planning is usually scarce or absent in small quarries in Brazil, and mine management generally focuses on daily operations. As a result, analysis of the effects of unit operations, such as blasting, over the whole mining process is often neglected. The goal of the following project was to study the effect of production blasting on loading and hauling times, secondary breaking times and primary crushing times at the Experimental Mine of the Research Center for Responsible Mining of the University of São Paulo, Brazil. The operations analysed included blasts that performed:under the average operational standard, defined in this paper as Case 1according to quarry standards, defined in this paper as Case 2.In order to establish the effects of blasting on the downstream process, three key performance indictors were used:The time taken to load the truck, when there is the need for material selection. Due to the fact that we do not have an operational baseline, the increase in time cannot be established, meaning that we must content ourselves with comparing the mean time in each scenario.The average time used for secondary breaking machinery.The time required for the primary crusher to fully process the load of a single truck. The results obtained indicate correlations between the coarseness of the blasted material and these operational times. Rio Tinto’s Hunter Valley Operations is a large open pit coalmine situated in the heart of the Hunter Valley in Australia. The Riverview West Pit has faced increasing production challenges in recent times due to decreasing dragline strike lengths and increasing environmental constraints on vibration, overpressure and fume generation. Conventional mining techniques would involve five to six production blasts per strip to recover multiple coal seams. Each blast event carries the risk of exceeding the strict environmental requirements. By working collaboratively with Orica, it was realised that the blasting method known as Stratablast™, in conjunction with advanced computer modelling techniques, could provide productivity gains whilst simultaneously providing more control over the environmental effects and the impact on nearby infrastructure.As a result of this change, the number of blasts per strip was reduced to one, with the implication that a great deal of care and forethought was needed to manage the increased challenge posed by multiple constraints in the proposed mining area. This innovative approach of combining throw and stand-up blasts allowed the extraction of all major coal seams in a single pass blast event. The blasts were initially designed with a large factor of safety to stay within environmental limits as they were over 1.1 km in strike length, with more than 800 holes and with a total charge weight of about 1000 t of bulk explosives. Furthermore, there were conflicting priorities around the desired blast outcomes. So far, 11 such blasts have been designed and successfully fired. After each blast, innovative design changes have been iteratively implemented to provide further control over environmental impacts, whilst continuing to improve productivity. As a result of these changes, blasts have progressively increased in complexity with the inclusion of features such as damage zones, mid-splitting, time gaps and different directions of firing. The consequence of this complexity is that the blast duration can be as long as 28 seconds to accommodate all components of the blast.This project has increased the productivity of the Riverview West Pit through blast design improvements and allowed the environmental impacts to be managed with far more control and predictability than would have been possible under a conventional blasting regime. The provision and management of energy in both fuel and electricity forms is an increasingly important consideration for mines. Pressures from communities, governments and markets are increasing towards more transparent and improved energy management. Combined with the energy-water nexus, where water and energy are closely related in the operation of a mine, this emerging business climate means a more thorough and responsible approach is required for the acquisition and use of energy, as well as the release of emissions. Many of the complexities in potential new ore bodies are borne in remote locations, high altitudes, low grades, arid climates and deep deposits. Each of these challenges affects the successful provision of energy. In combination, such challenges can leave an operation seemingly unviable from an energy perspective, especially when approached from a traditional mining energy feasibility lens. This paper discusses some of the energy alternatives currently available and emerging in the mining industry. Both energy supply and demand options are considered, which can provide a very different energy footprint with the flexibility to address, and potentially overcome, major energy challenges for a mine. Many of the ‘new paradigms in mining’ and notions of ‘sustainable mining’ have at their core the requirement for reliable, continuous centimetre-level positioning accuracy to enable increased automation of mining operations. The deployment of precision systems for navigating, controlling and monitoring machinery such as drills, dozers, draglines and shovels with real time position information increase their operational efficiency, and reduce the need for humans to be exposed to hazardous conditions. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is the best known, and only currently fully operational, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) providing positioning capability anywhere in the globe, on a continuous 24/7 basis, with accuracies ranging from the dekametre-level to the sub-centimetre-level depending on hardware and operational configuration. Despite this versatility, GNSS cannot satisfy the high accuracy positioning requirements for many applications in mine surveying, and mine machine guidance and control. The reason is that increasingly open cut mines are getting deeper, resulting in a reduction of the ‘sky-view’ necessary for GNSS systems to operate satisfactorily. Yet, to date there have been no viable alternatives to GNSS that can be deployed in mine environments that can meet the challenging requirements in open cut mines.Locata Corporation, a Canberra-based company, has invented a terrestrial high accuracy positioning system known as ‘Locata’ that can augment GNSS with extra terrestrial signals to permit cm-level positioning accuracy even when there are insufficient GNSS satellite signals for reliable positioning and navigation. Locata relies on a network of synchronised ground-based transceivers that transmit positioning signals that can be tracked by suitably equipped user receivers. Hence Locata can be considered a new type of ‘local constellation’, able to provide high accuracy positioning coverage where GNSS fails. This paper introduces some of the technical aspects of this Australian technology and describes tests conducted by Leica Geosystems over the last few years at Newmont Boddington Gold in Western Australia. A recent news announcement by Leica Geosystems (12 January 2011) has confirmed that their new mine management system will have combined GNSS + Locata positioning capability – the first commercial product that integrates GNSS and Locata capabilities into a single high accuracy and high availability navigation device for open cut mine machine automation applications.

The Western Australian gold industry has approximately 100 operating plants, mainly CIP/CIL. The nature of the State's rapidly expanding gold industry gave rise to concerns over management of the cyanide hazard, in that most plants are remote from major population centres, have a workforce with a high turn over and use highly saline process water. Approximately 4,500 workers in the industry have the potential to be exposed to cyanide in the course of their normal work.This paper outlines the risk management strategy developed by Government and industry to monitor atmospheric HCN gas in the work environment and the role of continuing education and training along with regular site inspections by Department of Mines Inspectors.

Heavy mineral sand deposits are a source for the economically important element titanium, which is contained in minerals such as ilmenite and rutile. In heavy mineral deposits ilmenite displays various degrees of alteration. Natural weathering of ilmenite involves the removal of Fe and thus results in an increase in the Ti-content. Minerals such as pseudorutile, ferropseudobrookite, anatase and the ill-defined mineral aggregate leucoxene, which consists mainly of various amounts of remnant ilmenite, pseudorutile, ferropseudobrookite and anatase, are typical replacement products of ilmenite. Ferropseudobrookite occurs as a recrystallised, optically and chemically distinct mineral phase. Textural relationships suggest a diversity of physicochemical conditions including weathering and metamorphism that led to the formation of complex mineral assemblages and textures. In the heavy minerals industry the alteration products of ilmenite are generally referred to as æaltered ilmeniteÆ and/or leucoxene. The distinction between æaltered ilmeniteÆ and leucoxene is not consequently defined and is very much dependent on economic factors and specific mining operations (ie determined by deposit specific mineral assemblages). Generally the term leucoxene is used in the heavy minerals industry as a collective description for ilmenite alteration products with TiO2-components ranging from 65 - 95 per cent. A detailed comparative mineralogical investigation including microscopic, SEM and QEMSCAN« techniques show that it is possible to identify and quantify the replacement products of ilmenite on a micron scale. QEMSCAN« generated particle maps were graphically compared with photomicrographs taken by applying reflective light microscopy. The resulting information can be integrated over the entire sample with respect to composition, absolute and relative mineral abundances, grain sizes, volumes, densities, textural relationships and liberation potentials. This provides a powerful tool for a first appraisal of the physicochemical behaviour of bulk samples and individual particles during metallurgical processing.

Plant based on the New Jersey refluxing process has been installed at the Cockle Creek Works of Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited to refine portion of the zinc output from the Imperial Smelting Furnace. Refining of impure zinc is effected by distillation in two stages in vertical columns compris- ing a series of superimposed silicon carbide trays designed such that ascending zinc vapours and descending liquid metal are in intimate contact. In the first stage the volatile elements (zinc and cadmium) are distilled from impure metal, condensed, and while still molten, fed to the second column in which zinc is boiled under controlled refluxing conditions to remove the cadmium content. The resultant zinc has a purity in excess of 99,995 per cent zinc. The availability of refined zinc has made possible the production of a number of zinc alloys for marketing in addition to the basis grades of zinc.
