Palaeomagnetic work on the red beds of the Hervey Group from central N.S.W., and on the Mount Eclipse Sandstone from the Ngalia Basin, Central Australia, reveals a pre-deformational magnetization from the Hervey Group, which indicates a semi-equatorial palaeolatitude during the latest Devonian or earliest Carboniferous and a syn-deformational magnetization from the Mount Eclipse Sandstone which places Australia at a palaeolatitude of about 70¦ ¦ 20¦S during the early Late Carboniferous. By comparison with the existing data from Australia, the new results indicate that: (1) Australia (and thus eastern Gondwanaland) underwent a rapid southward movement of about 60¦ during the late Early and early Late Carboniferous, (2) the Lachlan Fold Belt has been part of cratonic Australia since at least latest Devonian or earliest Carboniferous, and (3) the New England region and cratonic Australia were at a similar palaeolatitude during earliest Carboniferous, but they may have undergone the rapid southward movement separately.

Geologists use large data sets and spend many hours and much computing time modelling the distribution of minerals throughout a rock mass. Significant investments in drilling, assaying and quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) are made before sophisticated geostatistical techniques are applied to the collected data. A large amount of research has been done in this field such that the ore control model is a reasonably accurate reflection of the mineral that is actually in the ground. However, after all this effort, the mining engineers then work just as diligently to blast the in situ rock mass to a particle size that can be efficiently handled and further reduced by downstream comminution processes. In open cut mines, this invariably requires large amounts of explosive energy that displaces the ore boundaries from where the geologists originally defined them. Failure to accurately account for blast movement will result in misclassification, whether that is ore to waste; low grade to high grade; sulfide to oxide; or other contaminates û collectively referred to as ore loss and dilution. The financial consequence of getting this wrong is substantial and not well quantified. This diminishes all of the good geological QA/QC done in defining the ore. This paper discusses various technologies used to physically measure blast-induced orebody movement and the difficulties in modelling this with a purely theoretical approach. Rock mass structure, blast energy, design and timing contours all have significant and interrelated effects on blast movement vectors. Measured blast movement has a large variance due to the uncertainly of many of the controlling parameters û arguably dominated by the heterogeneous nature of the rock mass. Although there have been significant advances in blast movement modelling capability in recent years, this unpredictable blast movement limits their use in the context of production ore control. Garnierite mineralogy in saprolitic ore of the Goro lateritic nickel deposit, New Caledonia , was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron microprobe (EMP) analyses. These conspicuously, green-coloured phases occur either as submillimetre to centimetresized veins or as æbookletsÆ arranged in, macroscopic (subcentimetre sized), accordionlike structures supported in an undifferentiated matrix of mixed ÿ7+ and ÿ10+ phases. Within the veins, nickel for Mg solid solution increased from ten wt per cent NiO at the edge to 34 wt per cent NiO at the core, with vein edges comprising Ni-kerolite with <1.5 Ni per formula unit (pfu) grading to pimelite containing >1.5 Ni pfu at vein cores. The æbookletsÆ comprised nTpouite of formula, (Mg0.67Ni1.59Fe3+0.05)(Si2.17Al0.22)O5(OH)4 and averaged 30 per cent NiO. SEM element mapping highlighted the distribution and mineralogical association of Ni and Mg and emphasised the inverse relationship between Ni and Mg at the macroscopic (thin-section) scale. It is important to understand skarn-porphyry transitions in order to use exposed skarns to look for associated and potentially larger porphyries. For such purposes, a good start is to understand the transition between porphyry and skarn in known deposits. In this contribution, we report the transition at Antamina, Peru, where skarns occur in and around a Miocene complex comprised of more than seven porphyritic intrusions. There are three types of skarn-porphyry relationships. The earliest intrusive phase, P1A, contains both endoskarn and porphyry-style quartz veins with secondary biotite halos. The porphyry quartz veins and endoskarns formed at the same time. Locally, the intrusion contains only endoskarn without porphyry quartz veins and is surrounded by exoskarns in carbonate wall rocks. In the third scenario, later porphyry (P2) intruding into P1A porphyry and skarns related to P1A contains abundant granular quartz veins and secondary biotite alteration but does not have significant endoskarn. The granular quartz veins also extend into earlier P1A skarns. The scarcity of endoskarn associated with P2 is related to the supply of Ca. The earliest P1A intrusion intruded into carbonates that supplied abundant Ca, therefore both endoskarns and exoskarns formed. In contrast, where the wall rocks of the later P2 intrusion are P1A or skarn related to P1A, there was little free Ca, therefore only porphyry-style quartz veins formed.CITATION:Chang, Z, Mrozek, S A, Meinert, L D and Windle, S, 2015. Vitrokele technology is a resin process that can be applied in gold plants to reduce both capital and operating costs. The Vitrokele resin can be used for both precious metal recovery and for recovering free and combined cyanide from effluent streams. Vitrokele resin has been extensively tested at pilot plant level and is now applied successfully at a commercial heap leach facility in Zimbabwe where it is used in place of activated carbon for recovery of gold from pregnant leach solution. Significant capital cost savings were achieved by installation of a resin plant instead of a conventional carbon adsorption plant. Operation to-date has not seen any significant physical or chemical degradation of the resin either in terms of adsorption capacity/kinetics or physical appearance/size. This gold recovery process is equally applicable to slurry streams where it would be implemented in stirred tanks with interstage screens in a similar manner to a conventional carbon adsorption plant.

The Amacan Copper Project was constructed in the Philippines by a Finnish-Filipino Consortium during the years 1979 - 1982. The project involved a turnkey contract for a mine and a concentrator to process 25 000 tonne per day of porphy- ritic copper ore at a grade of 0.45% Cu. The orebody is located on Mindanao, the southernmost island of the Philippines, in rugged, mountainous terrain approximately 1 000 m above sea level. The adopted design principle was based on an efficient, straightforward installation utilising a minimum number of items of equipment each with high unit capacities. The consortium faced many problems which resulted in lengthy delays in construction and finally led to the client taking over responsibility for the completion of the project. The concentrator was successfully commissioned in July 1982.

Friction rock stabilisers (FRS) are steel-based, thin-walled tubular ground reinforcement widely used in underground mines in Western Australia. Following installation these stabilisers are subject to corrosion which may reduce the load carrying capacity and lead to unexpected ground falls. Although corrosion has been recognised as a common occurrence, particularly under aggressive mine water and mineral conditions present in underground mines, the knowledge of the effects of corrosion on the mechanical behaviour of FRS is limited. The Department of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia has conducted a laboratory based program of studies to investigate the effect of corrosion on the mechanical properties of FRS. The studies have focused on the effect of corrosion on tensile strength of FRS and frictional resistance along the interface between FRS and the drillhole wall. The results indicate that under certain conditions corrosion damage can significantly reduce the effectiveness of FRS.

The magnitude and orientation of the in situ stressfield has been determined as a key factor in controlling the stability of openings for both coal mine development and extraction. Monitoring of roadway and pillar behaviour in conjunction with numerical analysis has identified specific stress control measures that have been successfully applied to improve productivity in underground coal mining operations. The influence of the major horizontal stressfield on the stability of openings has been identified at a wide range of sites including mines in Australia, Britain, the USA, New Zealand and Japan. Stress mapping, stress measurement and stress monitoring techniques have been applied to define the in situ stress regime and, together with the correlation of measurements of rock deformation and rock reinforcement behaviour, has enabled appropriate stress control measures to be developed. Stress control measures for development headings have required the selection of roadway orientation, roadway sequencing, reinforcement density and pillar size. The monitoring of behaviour at a range of trial sites has confirmed significant improvements in development stability. Stress control measures for longwall extraction have required rational selection of longwall orientation and extraction direction. Where a mine layout design incorporating the optimum longwall layout design has not been possible, the use of sacrificial roadways has been successfully applied to protect key roadways from stress concentration effects. The activiltion of sphalerite with electrolytically generated copper ions from a copper electrode instead of the usual practice of the addition of copper sulphate was studied in the laboratory. A large surface area of copper was provided by lining three sides of a bench flotation cell with copper sheeting. The lining was connected to the positive terminal of a low voltage d.c. source, and the cell impeller to the negative terminal.Sphalerite was effectively activated by this arrangement and was subsequently floated using xanthate as the collector.Flotation results comparable to those obtained with 1 lb/ton CuS04.5H20 (0,255 lb/ton copper) were obtained using 0·1062 lb/ton of electrolytic copper and 0·488 kWh of electrical energy. The wastage of copper due to the formation of insoluble precipitates was found to be dependent on the length of time the current was passed. Maximum current was passed for the shortest time to minimize wastage.

The Carnilya Hill Mine, a joint venture project between Western Mining Corporation Limited (WMC) and The Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP), is a nickel sulphide deposit being developed by the Kambalda Nickel Operations (KNO) of Western Mining Corporation. Seven months elapsed from the time a decision to proceed with the project was taken until the first ore production. During the first month of operation a new KNO record for decline development was set. Equipment used includes an electro- hydraulic drill jumbo, 4 cubic metre front end loaders, and 35 tonne haulage trucks.

The mineralogy, maero- and micro-textures of Thackaringa ore are simple and have many counterparts among base metal-quartz-siderite vein type deposits elsewhere.The ore consists predominantly of galena, sphalerlte, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, and arsenopyrite in a quartz and siderite gangue. Silver minerals, as such, appear to be lacking and silver values are no higher than in other sulphide ores of this type. These features contrast very markedly with those of the A.B.H. Consols Lode which appears to have emanated from the north end of the Broken Hill Main Lode Horizon during high grade regional metamorphism. The Consols Lode has been regarded as of Thackaringa type, and both are regarded as possibly arising from the remobilization of Main Lode Horizon ore. Whilst this may yet prove to be so it appears that the marked differences in mineral composition between the Consols and the Thackaringa types, would require somewhat different modes of regeneration.Thackaringa ore, as well as A.B.H. Consols ore, on this basis, would necessitate the development of a metahydrothermal ore fluid to account for their present apparently hydrothermal (or pseudo-hydrothermal) constitution...

Rational design of layouts for longwall operations is greatly facilitated by use of an accurate and economical method for predicting stresses and displacements. The displacement discontinuity method (a form of boundary element method) is based on replacing actual excavation geometries by thin slits of the same plan area. This approach allows three-dimensional stress- analysis at a fraction of the cost of alternative methods. The analyses can be readily performed on economical microcomputers, putting the analysis capability within the reach of mine-site personnel. This paper describes investigations associated with the German Creek Central Colliery, the first longwall operation in Queensland's Bowen Basin. The material properties used in the model, in particular the rock mass and goaf properties, have been 'tuned' to fit stress measurements obtained during extraction of the first and second longwall panels at the mine. The study shows that model predictions based on suitably scaled anisotropic rock strata properties are in good agreement with the stress measurements made to date. This model predicts average chain pillar loads significantly higher than predicted by models based on United Kingdom conditions. A working chain pillar design method is proposed using average pillar loads predicted by the numerical model and ultimate strength characteristics given by Bieniawski's formula.

The Hermit Islands are situated at 145¦ E 1 30'S in the Bismarck Sea approximately 200km WNW of Manus Island. They are dominated by basalt flows, one of which yielded a K/Ar isotopic date of 3.4 + 0.05Ma. All basalts examined were olivine-bearing, but one sample also contained hornblende. Although many outcrops were weathered, no evidence of pervasive hydrothermal alteration was observed on any islands and non-weathered rocks are petrographically fresh and many retain glass.

Large scale cut and fill mining in narrow silver-lead-zinc orebodies began at Mount Isa in 1964. Initially each orebody was one stope and access was via raises from the level above. Upholing was the principal mining method, although flatbacking was employed where ground conditions were more difficult. Developments since have included access via footwall inclines and connection of all stopes with major crosscuts. Flatbacking is the principal method. The most recent cut and fill operation is now fully mechanised using drilling jumbos, rockbolting jumbos and load-haul-dump units. Improved ground support and drilling and blasting practices have enhanced safety, recovery and productivity in all cut and fill operations.

As part of the construction of the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop it was necessary to construct two 7 metre diameter tunnels, each 100 metres in length, by shield driven excavation through an alluvial valley at Elizabeth Street. The tunnels had a primary support of bolted precast reinforced concrete liner blocks and were excavated with the aid of compressed air. The work was undertaken by the Tunnelling Group of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works as nominated sub-contractor to John Holland (Constructions) Pty. Ltd. In this paper, the current methods for predicting surface subsidence due to underground coal mining are evaluated first. A single index, called a strata parameter (P), is then proposed to describe the overall character of the undermined strata in the context of surface subsidence. Based on the strata parameter, a method for predicting the maximum surface subsidence for various panel width (w)/depth (h) ratios is presented, which has been tested against specific empirical curves or data from several coalfields in different countries. From the data relating to several coalfields, a linear relationship between the reported average angle of draw and the strata parameter has been established. It has also been found that the strata parameter can be used for studying the locations of the inflection points and the shapes of transverse subsidence profiles.

The principle objective of development mining is to create thoroughfares that can be accessed by personnel and machinery for the entire life of an underground mine. The drill and blast process, being the primary method used when creating these thoroughfares, needs to be able to adequately fracture the rock to be removed whilst at the same time minimising any damage that may be sustained to the rock surface that remains. This process of damage prevention is known by a variety of different names including smooth blasting, sculpture blasting, contour blasting and controlled blasting. Whilst the terms are different, the objective is the same and that is to reduce and better distribute the explosive charges to minimise stressing and fracturing of the rock beyond the neat excavation line. The process in this report will be referred to as perimeter control blasting. This paper will discuss the benefits of using perimeter control blasting in a development mining operation and the theories that govern how these blasting techniques work. The methods that are used to implement perimeter control blasting will also be addressed, paying particular attention to how these blasting techniques have evolved, spawning new and improved perimeter control products. Finally some attention will be given to the process of optimising perimeter control blasting in any underground mining operation.

The first production stage in any mining operation is the breaking of whole rock into fragments small enough for loading and subseq- uent handling. This primary fragmentation is most frequently accomplished with blasting. The maximum fragment size and the fragment size distribution have an influence on the subsequent loading, handling and crushing costs. It is assumed that total rock fragmen- tation in practice is a result of an interact- ing array of radial cracks from various blastholes. The representation for the basic pattern of radial cracks emitted from a particular blasthole is first described. A model is then developed simulating the interaction between blastholes at various burdens and spacings, and in simultaneous and delayed modes. The resultant picture is analysed and a fragment size distribution calculated. Methods of incorporating the existing faults in the rock are also discussed. Finally application of this model to various facets of mining are considered.

Basic premises for evaluating special characteristics of gold-bearing porphyry metal systems stem from their contrasts with properties of the class as a whole. Included features are differences in geologic, thus tectonic, environments, subtle but real differences in the proportions of accessory metals Mo-Ag-Au that are regionally and within some regions, tempo-rally distinct, contrasts in the Ag:Au ratios, petrological-geo-chemical as well as isotopic differences between intrusive suites, the age and nature of host terranes, contrasts in alter-ation style, and zoning variations of mineralogical and physical properties of rocks. These properties are linked in various ways in different regions and suggest that in large gold-bearing systems where gold may be uniformly distributed, environ-ments of emplacement, and compositions or sources of igneous "progenitors" may dominate in importance over processes, and that systems in which gold is zoned are processes-dominant.
