In this report,the results of the large diameter drilling tests in coal seams assisted with water jet are described. The stress relief in coal seams by this new method is as effective as by the conventional method and the penetration speed by this method is 1.5 times as fast as by the other method. 1 Introduction The average mining depth of Japanese coal mines has already attained about 700m from the surface. Almost all coal mines are suffered from occurrence of coal and gas outbursts. To prevent outbursts, some countermeasures are taken generally. In particular, large diameter stress relief borings have been carried out quite often at Akabira coal mine located in the northern part of the Ishikari coal field in Hokkaido,JAPAN. Many kinds of shield machines are being driven in the soft ground of Tokyo metropolitan area. Tunnel alignments for underground power transmission lines are generally planned to pass under public roads where facilities, especially life-line facilities, are densely located. Therefore, it is frequently required to drive the shield machines along very sharply curving routes. This paper reports on the performance of the new shield machine - the Sharp Curve Excavation Shield Machine - developed by Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc., which can freely drive along a much sharper curve than conventional machines. Some of features of the developed devices of this machine are, maximum flexing angle of 6.5 degree in all deirection at the middle of shield body, maximum bending angle of 3.5 degree in all direction at the cutter disc, and so on. This shield machine can there- fore drive along curve of minimum radius 15m. The machine was confidently applied to the const- ruction of tunnel in soft clay strata at N values 2 to 5. Outer diameter 3.7m. Length 202m. Horizontal curve; radius 15m, length 20m x 2. Vertical curve; radius 30 m, inclined driven up 29%. The behaviors of the shield machine, segments and surrounding ground were monitored during construction for safety and efficiency check of this machine.

The Goldstrike Mine is in Eureka County, Nevada, U.S.A., approximately 23 miles northwest of the town of Carlin. The mine is at the north end of the Tuscarora Spur of the Tuscarora Mountains at elevations of 5,300 feet to 5,950 feet. It is part of the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict of the Carlin Trend, a northwest alignment of sediment hosted, disseminated gold deposits. The Carlin Trend includes over 15 major gold deposits with production, reserves and geological resources of approximately 65 million ounces of gold (Figure 1). In the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict, there are seven major deposits; Betze, Lower Post, Post, Genesis, Bluestar, Purple Vein and Deep Star, plus numerous smaller deposits (Figure 2). Production, reserves and resources for the subdistrict are approximately 40 million ounces. Betze and Purple Vein are located on property controlled by Bamck Goldstrike Mines and Bluestar and Genesis on Newmont Gold property. Post, Lower Post, and Deep Star occur both on Barrick and Newmont Property.

Cable bolts have been used extensively in the development of the footwall of the Mt Whaleback Mine as a part of the ground improvement program since 1986. High tensile seven wire stress relieved steel strand similar to that used in pre-stressed concrete and grouted in place with sulphate resistant cement have been employed for rock-mass reinforcement.Most of the footwall is developed in Mt McRae Shale which contains a 20 m thick pyritic shale layer 14 m below the ore/waste contact. Due to extensive folding of the footwall rocks, the pyritic shale layer regularly occurs on, or close to the pit slope. Rain water run-off seeping through pyritic shale becomes acidic to the extent where its pH value can be as low as 1.5.

A South African chromite sample was subjected to characterisation and physical beneficiation testwork in order to assess its suitability to produce an upgraded chromite product with a silica level of <1 per cent SiO2 and a chromite level of >46 per cent Cr2O3. Chemical analysis by XRF indicated that the bulk material had a Cr2O3 content of 40.5 per cent w/w and a SiO2 content of 7.5 per cent w/w. Combined XRF analysis with sizing data showed that the majority (~70 per cent) of the siliceous material was present in the +600 ¦m fraction while ~70 per cent of the Cr2O3 was in the -600 ¦m fraction. Qualitative mineral phase analysis by XRD indicated that the sample mineralogy was dominated by ferrian-magnesiochromite spinel ([Fe,Mg]Cr2O4) and aluminium-chromite spinel (Fe[Al,Cr]2O4), with enstatite (Mg2Si2O6), haematite (Fe2O3) and anorthite (CaAl2Si2O8) as minor phases. SEM and EMP characterisation showed that the silica was mainly present in discrete enstatite grains but lesser amounts were also present as the high silica phases plagioclase and enstatite on the edge of grains. Wet gravity separation performed on sized fractions (-600+106 ¦m size range) from the -2.0 mm (primary) ore as well as the ore that had been crushed to pass 0.6 mm (secondary) showed that stage crushing of the -2 mm +600 ¦m fraction followed by wet gravity separation upgraded the Cr2O3 grade at 70 per cent Cr2O3 recovery from ~44 per cent Cr2O3 in the primary material to 46 per cent Cr2O3 (the target grade specification) in the secondary sample. It also showed that the stage crushing of this +600 ¦m fraction at a cut-off level of one per cent SiO2 increased the cumulative Cr2O3 recovery from ~50 per cent in the primary material to ~63 per cent in the secondary sample in the same size range of -600+106 ¦m. The extent to which additional crushing could lead to improved chromite recoveries at the required chromite and silica grade target specifications was not determined. This experience demonstrates that prior to processing test work being conducted, a thorough understanding of the chemistry and mineralogy of the test sample promotes efficient and targeted processing research.

Measurements of the rate of PbO reduction from high lead metallurgical slags were made under laboratory conditions using graphite, a CO-50%CO2 gas mixture and metallic iron as reductants. The results show a transition in rate-controlling step at low PbO contents (i.e. 6 wt.% PbO). At medium to high PbO contents in the slag, the reduction rate was found to be strongly affected by the slag chemistry, temperature and reductant type. The effect of stirring and hence mass transfer in the slag phase on the reduction rate of PbO was found to be insignificant at medium-high PbO contents. Attention is drawn to the importance of chemically controlled reaction rates at the slag-gas interface. Parallels between these results and test work on a 5 tph scale have been briefly drawn.

As part of a project on the application of thiourea leaching to a variety of Australian ores, the systematic variation of pH, redox po- tential, and thiourea concentration were in- vestigated on an oxidized gold ore from the Nevoria mine, WA. Stirred open beaker tests were conducted with a pH-stat and Eh-stat system to automati- cally control pH and redox potential at selected values, while thiourea concentration was main- tained manually. Increasing the acidity of the leach liquor from pH 3.6 to pH 1, increased the gold extrac- tion from 37 per cent to over 90 per cent in S h, but there was only a limited improvement below pH 1.5. Silver extraction and thiourea consumption increased as the acidity was in- creased. Increasing the redox potential from 150 to 200 mV (i.e. potential of Pt electrode vs SCE) increased the initial rate of gold and silver extraction, but the effect on cumulative gold extraction by 5 h was slight. Thiourea consump- tion was greatly increased as the redox poten- tial was increased. An increase in thiourea concentration from 1.2 to 4.8 per cent increased the initial rates of gold and silver extraction, but, as for the change in Eh, the improvement in cumulative ex- traction by 5 h was marginal. Thiourea consump- tion increased with thiourea concentration.

Underground mining in the Bowen Seam has shown that the majority of outbursts have co- incided with faults, igneous dykes and sills, stone roof rolls or some combination of these. The coal measures are deformed principally by N- S trending, easterly dipping thrusts presumed to he associated with the major, reverse Collins- ville Fault. The old Collinsville State Mine records suggest that thrusts and strike-slip faults have been common sites of outbursts. In contrast, normal faults have not been outburst- prone. Detailed geological mapping in Bowen No. 2 Colliery 53 east and west panels has been carried out in the hanging wall of a thrust zone of 6.1 m throw. The associated sheared coal has been defined and several fracture sets delin- eated. Sheared coal can be observed up to 170 m from this thrust zone, but this is dependent on the vitrinite content of the upper seam section worked. Fvidence indicates that outbursts have crnrroJ only in extremely sheared coal. Curious spherical- to cylindrical-shaped c,,.31 ohjects ("apples" and "rods") are related to the deformation in the vicinity of the thrust zone. This paper cites selected, prominent examples of current, major projects in Southern Africa in both the mining and civil fields. Differences and similarities in the life cycle of mining and civil projects are discussed. A closer relationship between the mining and civil fraternities is beginning to develop and should be encouraged because of the resultant exchange of experience and technology which benefits both disciplines. An attempt is made to assess future potential for new, major projects and trends in the implementation thereof.

The development of Mount Isa Mines Limited power supply is traced through the history of the mine operations. As would be expected, growth of the power supply system follows closely the increase in mine output, although it will be seen that total kWh. produced per ton milled shows a considerable reduction in later years when the mine output showed a more rapid rate of increase. That this reduction is not more marked is possibly due to the increased community and Shire Council power usage per head of population.INTRODUCTIONThe geographical position of Mount lsa, far from any large regional power supply Authority, dictated the policy that the Company be responsible for the production and suppiy of all power required for the plant operation. The Company also, in November 1937, accepted responsibility for the supply of a part of the power requirements of the township of Mount Isa. The history of power supply to the Mine may be divided into several phases.1. The supply Of lighting and power during the first plant construction period 1929-1931.2. The construction of the first section of the Mines Power Station, comprising Nos. 1 and 2 turbo alternators and boilers.3. The addition of No. 3 turbo alternator and boiler.4. I lamata is within the Morobe Goldfield (7¦ 25' S, 146¦ 39' E) on the Wau (SB 55-14),1:250,000 scale map sheet (Fig 1). The deposit is 13 km SW of Wau, within the headwaters of the Upper Watut River, at an average elevation of 2000 m. The steep mountainous terrain is covered by dense tropical rainforest and access is by helicopter or by foot track. The deposit has been described previously by Wells and Young (1991) and 1)enwer. Leach and Mowat (1995). Data collected to late 1996 have been used to estimate an Inferred Resource of 9.2 Mt at 3.1 g/t gold using a cutoff of 0.5 g/t. This contains a high grade portion for which an Inferred Resource of 1.2 Mt at 9.7 grt gold has been estimated using a 5.0 g/t cutoff.

The decoppering of soft and hard leads was investigated by stirring in an open pot, using sulfur or sulfur plus pyrites, or sulfur plus pyrrhotite, as reagents. Lead samples taken during the process were analysed for copper. Dross samples were examined by optical micro- scope, SEM and XRD. Soft lead containing silver can be decoppered satisfactorily by stirring with 0.1% S at low temperatures - close to 330¦C. Soft lead, whether containing silver or not, can be decoppered satisfactorily at higher temperatures by stirring with 0.1% S plus 0.4% pyrites. Then CuFeS2, Cu5FeS4 and PbS are formed, instead of Cu2S, CuS and PbS when using S alone. Hard lead containing tin can be decoppered satisfactorily by stirring with 0.1% S at temperatures from 320-400¦C. When stirring with 0.1% S plus 0.4% pyrites, reversion of copper from dross to lead on prolonged stirring does not occur. Hard lead without tin can be decoppered with S plus pyrites better than with S alone, but the presence of antimony hinders the decoppering, which is less effective on lead with 5.5% Sb than with 2.3% Sb.

The Porphyry Gold Mine (150km NE of Kalgoorlie) was reopened in November 1983 with production commencing in April 1984. Original reserves quoted for the open pit were 822000 tonnes at 5.2 g/t Au based on wide spaced diamond drill holes. Close spaced grade control drilling has revealed some loss of tonnage and a significantly lower grade. In the area of the pit mined to 30 June 1985 this grade control reserve estimate contained 67% of the gold in the original ore reserve with the grade being 19% lower. It is anticipated that the final grade control reserve estimate will contain around 80-85% of the gold contained in the original reserve. There has been close agreement between the Mill Head grade (4.19 g/t Au) and the grade control predicted grade (4.2 g/t Au) confirming that dilution is not a major problem. After initial poor agreement (attributed to "lock-up" in the circuit) the bullion calculated head grade steadied out at 93% of the grade control prediction. This difference is considered to represent the geostatistical bias in the drill hole/crushed rock sampling. Gold recovery has been in the range 93-95% (compared with bullion calculated grade). The net result is that the recovered grade of ore mined to 30 June 1985 is 70% of the original ore reserve grade.

GRD Macraes Limited, owners and operators of the Macraes and Reefton Gold Project in New Zealand, have taken up the challenge of sustainably producing in excess of 300 000 ounces per annum within five years.GRD Macraes is well on target to achieve the forecast of 170 000 oz at a cash cost of A$310/oz for the 2002 financial year, with our Reefton operation set to add about 70 000 û 80 000 ounces per annum from late 2003.At the end of 2001 GRD Macraes Limited had resources of 5.5 million oz with reserves at 2.8 million oz.

Working thick coal seams in Poland is a very serious problem. Nearly 40 per cent of all coal is extracted from seams more than 3 m. thick. In absolute figures this represents about 70 million tons of coal per year. Working seams with thicknesses up to 3.5 m. does not present, at present, major difficul- ties. Working thicker seams calls for a steady improvement in order to increase the degree of utilization of the deposit and to enlarge the concentration of output. The problem is sometimes more difficult because, in many cases, the seams are worked under protected surface structures which compels the mines to use hydraulic stowing with all its advantages and disadvantages. Rock burst hazard, the control of which is the basic problem hindering the mining, is a further problem. The mining systems used in Poland are adapted to these natural and technical conditions.

FOR some time it has been recognised by the Metallurgical Staff that the presence of pyrite in the ore was adversely affecting the grades of the flotation concentrates.Following experimental work, it was decided to change over from the acid circuit in the mill to an alkaline circuit. The following description sets out the procedure adopted, -and the results obtained when such change-over was made.The Zinc Corporation ore consists mainly of galena, marmatite, calcite, and quartz, with smaller quantities of pyrite, fluorspar, and rhodonite.A clean specimen of marmatite picked from the ore assayed 53.4% zinc, and 10% iron, with no lead or insoluble. However, as zinc concentrates have been, at times, produced in the plant assaying over 53% zinc, and with only 8.7% iron, apparently the picked specimen of marmatite did not represent an average composition.The average would probltbly be between 8 and 9% of iron, and from 53.5 to 54.5% of zinc. It is obvious, therefore, that from this ore it is not possible to produce zinc concentrate of a higher grade than this average figure.In the Colorado School of Mines Quarterly for April, 1928, Vol. 23, No. 2, on page 47, we find the following statement:As the zinc in the ore exists as marmatite, which contains approximately 54.5% zinc and 10% iron, 49% zinc in the concentrate may be considered high.This statement refers to the ore treated in the Sullivan concentrator, owned by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited.

Bacteriophage (phage) are viruses that infect bacteria. Protein coatings on the surface of the phage particle can be genetically engineered so that they bind to inorganic molecules. The filamentous phage particle is about 930 nanometres in length and 6.5 nanometres in diameter and consists of a single-stranded molecule of DNA surrounded by five different coat protein molecules denoted P3, P6, P7, P8 and P9. Peptide sequences in the P3 coat protein that bind to sphalerite and chalcopyrite have been identified. The binding is selective; phage with specific P3 peptide sequences bind to minerals but do not bind to silica or to pyrite. Two peptide sequences in the P8 coat protein that bind selectively to chalcopyrite and pyrite have also been identified. The amino acids in the P8 binding sequences are hydrophilic and thus a coating of a mineral particle with phage having these peptide sequences may render the particle hydrophilic. Experiments are underway to confirm this. Phage are relatively easy to grow and are not living organisms requiring an energy source to maintain life. Phage can also tolerate a range of pH and temperatures. Given this, and the ability to indentify phage coat proteins that bind selectively to a variety of inorganic molecules, phage have the potential to be useful tools in mineral processing and waste treatment.

Mixtures of ammonia and cyanide at low concentrations leach gold selectively from copper-gold ores. The effects of various reagent compositions on three different ore types containing between 0.3 - 1.5 per cent Cu are reported. It is shown that the results and optimum compositions vary according to the ore, which is attributed in part to the mineralogy and adsorption of solution species on the mineral surfaces. The solution chemistry of the Cu-NH3-CN system indicates that Cu(CN)a - and Cu(CN)3 species are involved in the leaching mechanism. Rotating disc studies on pure gold and copper are reported which show that the Cu(CN)32- species leach gold at about half the rate of CN but leach copper at the same rate. The presence of ammonia retards the leaching rate further. Mixtures of Cu(CN)a3- and NH3 effectively leach gold from Telfer tailing without leaching copper. The role of ammonia appears to be to control the precipitation of copper rather than the kinetics of leaching.

The method for design of primary roof support for the large todoidal cavern constructed to house the Sydney Opera House parking station is presented. The cavern was constructed with 5 m of rock cover beneath Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens. Design of rock reinfonnent using a combination of fully grouted rock dowels and Macalloy bars was based on control of horizontal shear movement along bedding features in the roof. A combination of linear arch type analyses and non-linear jointed finite element analyses were used in the design study together with an analysis of the shear resistance offered by fully grouted bolts under shear deformation.

A new mining area at the Vaal Reefs gold mine is to have a shaft. system which will extend to a depth of 4 200 m and will require 130 MW of cooling. A novel feature of the proposed cooling system is a large underground air cooling installation in which an ice slurry is sprayed into the ventilation air. The design of the ice slurry bulk air cooler, in the form of counter.flow cooling towers, is discussed. Comparative thermal tests with cold water and ice slurries (with ice mass fractions up to 22 per cent), were carried out in a 5 m high test tower. The presence of the ice in the water spray increases the resistance to heat flow and reduces the overall thermal characteristics of the air cooler by 8 per cent. Notwithstanding this, the use of ice slurries is indeed beneficial in terms of overall costs. It is concluded that a 25 MW air cooler should use 410 kg/s of ice slurry with a 10 per cent ice mass fraction to cool 550 kg/s of air which is 75 per cent of the total air flow rate.
