ATTENTION has recently been directed to the subject of dust production and methods of allaying same in the Broken Hill mines, so that the time would seem opportune for the local branch of the Institute to discuss certain features of an important phase of the health question in connection with underground work. Tests conducted in the Broken Hill South mine and at other mines at Broken Hill have shown that the ordinary operatioils of mining, such as boring, blasting, and shovelling, may be accompanied by the production of considerable dust unless water is judiciously used.In South Africa·dust particles under 5 microns size are regarded as dangerous, becailse they are so small as to be invisible to the naked eye, and wm esc'ape the protections set up by nature in the nose and throat, and thus may be inhaled in large quantity. A micron is 1 25000th part of an inch. This paper contains an account of the work done on the Broken Hill South mine chiefly, though some tests were done on other local mines.An acknowledgment is due to Mr. T. A. The mining. operations of Bougainville Copper Pty Limited are located at Panguna on the Island of Bougainville which is part of the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. Mineralisation in the Panguna area was first established by C.R.A. Exploration Pty Ltd in 1964. Exploration work since then has established ore reserves estimated to be 760,000,000 tons of.0.47% copper and 0.4 dwt./ton gold. An economic feasibility study completed in July of this year has enabled a decision to be made to proceed with a major mining operation. The ore will be mined by open cut methods and will be treated in a conventional concentrator with a nominal capacity of 90,000 short tons per day. The concentrate will be pumped as a slurry through a 15 mile long pipeline to a port established on the east coast where it will be filtered and dried ready for export. Other supporting facilities for the mine include two towns, a 135 megawatt steam power station, and access roads.

This paper describes the results of the field application tests at Miike Colliery on the integrated automatization of the longwall mining system for medium thick coal seam. The purpose of the research is to develop an automatic longwall mining system which can be controlled accurately from outside of the face, and the ultimate goal is an eliminate of men from the face. Presently, the field test is being conducted in Yotsuyama mine following to a success in the performance test on surface. Remote Batch Control System for shield supports has been adapted to operate all supports from the control panel located at the entrance of the face. Remote monitoring and control system of the drum shearer has also been tested. The system makes it possible to operate the shearer either at the main gate or full automatic. Productivity and safety will be substantially improved as those systems enable to eliminate all workers from the face under the severe working conditions with high ground pressure and hot and humid atmosphere due to increasing mining depth. So far, we have been satisfied with the results of the field test and those system will be an effective countermeasure to operate the face with a high risk of rock-burst.

In older to improve efficiency of surface pre--grouting in sealing off water in heavily water-bearing strata, such as sandstone,siltstone and limestone, several methods have been used in China, they are ; intermittent pre-grouting, adjusting pre-grouting parameters and stepwise repeated pre-grouting methods. The paper describes effect of deviation on water sealing in pre-grouting. Deviation correction measures, like mechanical, technological and changing hole position methods have been introduced with satisfactory results in practical engineering projects without increasing the volume of engineering project and without causing delay.

Geonechanical modelling of island arc sys- tems and their analogs is investigated. Slow seismotectonic movements along the inclined deep fault zone under the compressive horizontal stress conditions are proposed to be the princi- pal mechanism controlling the structures and processes in the active continental margins. A model of shearing surface crack in an elastic half-plane is used for simulation. The main ele- ment of the model is viscous interaction bet- ween the crack sides, the viscosity varying with depth. To describe the stress-strain state of the medium an integro-differential singular equation is derived and solved numerically. The results of simulation are in good agreement with geological and geophysical data on the ac- tive continental margins.

Mines are often located in remote areas that are not well served by æstiffÆ power grids. Radial transmission networks, high lightning incidence (eg in South Africa the Witwatersrand experiences seven to ten strikes/km2 per year), low short circuit strengths and diesel generation are not uncommon. All these factors result in the electric power supply to many mines being unusually prone to dips and disturbances. æLegacyÆ winder drives û cyclo converters and dc drives û convert power directly from the supply to the motor, with no intermediate energy storage element. Further, they rely on the supply network for commutation and are therefore sensitive to supply voltage disturbances. There is a high probability that a dc or cyclo mine winder will trip during a supply disturbance, often resulting in lost production time and call-outs for technical staff to reset or even repair equipment. In contrast, a voltage source inverter (VSI) ac drive stores a large quantity of energy (in the dc link capacitors) and is fully self-commutating. Hence, this topology is inherently more immune to supply voltage disturbances. Indeed, vendors of ac VSI mine winders make general statements about the superior performance of their drives during supply disturbances. However, the advantages have apparently not been previously quantified. This paper compares different winder drive topologies and their sensitivity to supply disturbances, considers categories of supply disturbances and quantifies the cost of the effects on the different drive types.

Several mineral resources have been recognised to alkaline igneous rocks. In general, these mineralisations present low P grades, so a complex concentration process is required to achieve commercial grade concentrates. This process is guided not only by the ore characteristics, such as apatite grain size and liberation degree, gangue minerals and slimes content, but also by different apatite varieties, iron oxi-hydroxide surface coating and roughness. The main techniques applied to apatite and phosphate ore characterisation, such as optical microscopy, cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), surface techniques and magnetic separation are discussed, aiming to evaluate distinct apatite varieties and their technological behaviour.

Sequencing of large underground firings is a critical aspect of blast performance. Using theory developed in open cut operations, where blast results are easier to quantify, a new technique for sequencing underground mass blasts has been developed. The basis for the technique is to identify timing regimes to control fragmentation and relief then apply non-electrics to fit these criteria. The use of computer software to graphically interpret delay statistics enables the evaluation of designs in a realistic manner.

Coal slurry pumping was introduced into the U.K. in 1973. Gateside packs were prepared in areas of containment using R.O.M. coal and a special fast setting cement. The packs restricted roadway convergence and moderated spontaneous combustion risks, but costs were high and alternptives were sought. A similar system using OPC and an accelerator had limited success. Much more successful was the Aquapack process which used dilute slurries of a special OPC based cement and an accelerator based on sodium carbonate and bentonite pumped simultaneously into la fabric packbag. The Tekpak system using HAC and a much modified calcium sulphate mixture superceded Aquapack on the grounds of improved cement pumping life lower alkalinity and lower costs. A further modification of this system gave a cement with a 24 hour pumping life thus obviating flushing out pipe ranges except at the week-ends, improved packbags also increased the efficiency of the process. The hazard of spontaneous combustion can be inhibited if air supply channels across the waste can be located and plugged. Using gas samples from pack pipes to locate the heating and injecting a special grout, formulated from bentonite, sodium silicate and thixotroping agents. into the waste on the intake road has proved a successful method of controlling heatings. Mine' roadway and face cavities are being safely and successfully filled with cementitious foams produced in a novel placer machine. The foams are based on fast setting cements with specialised foaming agents. Up to 13 cu. metres per hour of fast setting thixotropic foams can be produced and their use is now widespread throughout U.K. coal mines.

This paper serves to outline the circumstances and causes of the air-blast that occurred at Northparkes Mines in November 1999. It describes the design of the mine, the geotechnical issues surrounding cave propagation and the cave monitoring systems that were in place prior to the event. A short description of the air-blast that followed a sudden collapse is given. Details of the risk assessment process that evolved during the rectification process are provided with their subsequent modification to form the core of a major hazard monitoring process. The system is in line with the recommendations given by the Coroner resulting from the inquest into the deaths of the four people who lost their lives during the air-blast.

Copper and gold mineralisation at Batu Hijau is directly related to quartz veining and wall rock alteration that developed in close spatial and temporal association with multiple tonalite porphyry intrusions. To its advantage with respect to the study and better understanding of the evolution of the porphyry system, Batu Hijau has comparatively minor late alteration and mineralisation overprints. This paper summarises results of detailed geological logging, petrographic studies and geochemical analyses of diamond drill cores from the deeper sections of the Batu Hijau porphyry system (ie its roots). WaihiÆs Cornish Pumphouse is located on the edge of town in a dynamic and changeable area where history affects the future. As in any successful project, ingenuity and team work have been significant factors in the planning and implementation of the buildingÆs relocation.   Work around the Pumphouse site commenced circa 1900 with preparation to sink the No 5 shaft. Construction of the pumphouse and the steam driven C pump was completed by 1904 with hints of what was to come evident in 1905 as the No5 Shaft collar had sunk 350mm in four years. By 1907 surface cracking developed over the Milking Cow cave area and in 1913 200 mm was cut off the main pumping rod as the ground was sinking at a rate of 25 mm per year.   In 1913 ground around No 6 shaft had subsided 600 mm.It was also the end of an era as steam gave way to hydroelectricity and electric pumps replaced the C Pump. C Pump was maintained as a backup from 1913 to 1929 and then finally scrapped. 25 years of underground caving operations removed approximately 400 000 cubic metres of ore leaving a 7 ha collapse crater that eventually became known as the mine lake.   On the edge of town a tension zone over the Royal Lode began to develop 50 m diameter chimney collapses as large scale blocks relaxed into unfilled stopes in the old Martha underground mine. After the 1999 collapse part of the main street was closed and after the 2001 collapse Hazard Zones were declared, more streets closed and areas evacuated and retired from residential use.   By 1984 the Pumphouse has approximately one degree of tilt and in 2002 tilt on the Pumphouse accelerated briefly and then settled down. Tilt accelerated again late in 2004 and a scoping study was initiated to define protection options for the pumphouse. The Martha Mining Licence requires Newmont to 'Take whatever precautions are necessary to protect the old Cornish Pumphouse adjacent to No5 shaft' and viable solutions needed to found.   Any work on the Pumphouse comes standard with a wide range of stakeholders, governing agencies and legal framework to consider. Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) is owner and administrator of the pumphouse.

Following a detailed assessment of concen trator performance at Broken Hill South Limited which was reported in a previous paper, the fine grinding section was changed from a parallel arrangement of the two grinding circuits to a series arrangement, and the concentrator per- formance re-assessed. The change to series grinding had virtually no effect on the actual or potential capacity of the circuit to make a final product with 80% passing 100 mesh. However, the fresh flotation feed contained significantly less +150 mesh lead and +65 mesh zinc (material which was shown to float poorly), without an increase in the quantity of poor-floating ultra-fine lead and zinc. From the size-by-size flotation recovery data, it was shown that overall recoveries of both lead and zinc were approximately 1% higher than they would have been without this change in size distribution and it was concluded that this was a direct result of the change in grind- ing procedure.

The Nelson province was chosen as the prime area for rhenium sampling, based on its mineral associations. Sample preparation involved benefication by grinding and flotation A modification of published procedures for rhenium analysis was developed and the results compared with those obtained for molybdenum on the same samples using atomic absorption spectroscopy. The results of the analysis for both metals is discussed and the relationships between rhenium and the molybdenum mineralisa- tion of this region is commented on. A metal- 1ngenic province is defined for molybdenum and r'.ienium and the tectonic setting for this is discussed. Some consideration has been given to rhenium possibilities in Fiordland and the Coromandel Range.

Blasting is a critical task in the development of an open pit. The formation of stable slopes is also essential to the safe and economic extraction of ore. The objectives of a mine blasting department are often considered to be in direct conflict with those of the geotechnical department. This should not be the case. Personnel in the various mining departments need to understand that their goals are the same û to optimise safety and cost-effectiveness of the operation. Blasting has the potential to damage rock that is to remain in situ by generating either excess vibration, and/or pressure. These damage mechanisms are described and guidelines with respect to blast design to minimise the potential for damage are given. A rock mass could be expected to be subjected to varying degrees of damage by blasting, including both intensity of damage and also the extent of damage. These issues have potential to impact significantly on geotechnical design considerations. It is therefore important for the practitioner to define what constitutes damage. In the context of mining, it is recognised that there is a need to balance the requirements for efficient excavation with those of forming stable and cost-effective pit walls. It is therefore important to have a set of key performance indicators (KPIs) against which the performance can be bench marked. These would include cost and time, both of which may be influenced by very diverse factors such as drilling, explosives and their performance, fragmentation, excavator and haul truck performance, requirements for batter clean-up and safe working practices. KPIs are identified and discussed in this paper.

Emphasis is placed on Australian contributions, and their impact on gold metallurgy. Consideration is given to the future development of selective solvent extractants, ion exchange resins or alternative reagents for cyanide.

Recent analysis of backfilling material has shown that a finer size distribution is preferable for stope filling. In order to increase crusher throughput and pit productivity, a reassessment of the quarrying operation was conducted. Part of that reassessment was a review of blasting practice. Six means of reducing the average muckpile fragment size were examined. Different blast initiation and charging options were compared, and patterns using smaller hole sizes were designed, analysed with the JKMRC 3x3o software, then drilled and fired. The ground vibration and face movement was recorded and compared. To determine whether the Kuz-Ram model could be used in an economic analysis of the quarry operation, the fragmentation distribution of the small diameter hole blasts was determined. Photographs of the muckpiles were taken and digitised. However subsequent analysis indicated that a satisfactorily large photo sample was only obtained from the smallest diameter hole blast. The Kuz-Ram fragmentation model prediction was found to be within the confidence limits of those results. An engineering and cost comparison between the blasts was made.
