Gosowong is situated within the Neogene magmatic arc of Halmahera island in the Maluku province of eastern Indonesia. It was discovered as the result of a rigorous ground reconnaissance program in an area with no previous mining activity. The broad structural setting in the Gosowong District comprises an elongate dome formed by the forceful upward intrusion of magma along a deep-seated structure, resulting in associated tensional fracturing trending parallel to the long axis of the dome. Four copper-gold porphyries and numerous low-grade epithermal veins occur within this mineralised corridor, with the Gosowong Deposit being the only economic occurrence discovered to-date. Gold mineralisation is hosted within multiphase epithermal quartz-adularia and quartz-chlorite fissure veins, breccias, and stockworks. High-grade gold mineralisation is emplaced in two gently south-plunging ore shoots along a 400 m section of the north-striking, east-dipping, Gosowong Fault, the primary control on mineralisation. The Gosowong Fault is believed to be a tensional fracture associated with uplift of the dome. Lithological variation and structural intersections play a large role in grade distribution within the vein zone. Host rocks comprise a wide range of shallow marine, intermediate-basic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks of ?late Miocene age. The Gosowong gold deposit is a classic example of a low-sulphidation epithermal gold deposit, based on the abundance of adularia and illite in the alteration assemblage, and low base-metal sulphide content within quartz-adularia veins. The indicated resource is estimated at 0.99 Mt at 27 g/t Au and 38 g/t Ag for a total of 870 000 ounces Au, using a cut-off grade of 2 g/t Au.

With oxygen conditioning routinely used in both the lead and zinc circuits at Pasminco Elura Mine a more sophisticated method of determining oxygen demand was required. It is known that different ore types have different oxygen consumption rates, however oxygen is added at a fixed rate regardless of ore type in the plant. Therefore, a simple laboratory test was devised to measure the oxygen demand of ores. The paper describes the technique employed, and provides an interpretation of the results. These data, together with pulp chemical measurements (Eh, pH and EDTA extraction data) were correlated against laboratory flotation performance to establish the relationship between oxygen demand and the position of the grade/recovery curve.

The South Deep surface shaft system is being sunk to a final depth of 2750 in below surface and on completion will be the deepest single drop haft in the world. The shafts will intersect the target reef horizon at 2650 to below surface. In order to negate the requirement for a shaft pillar, which would he extremely large at this depth, the reef horizon in the vicinity of the intersection is currently being mined. A high quality crushed waste/classified tailings backfill is being placed in the longwall stoping panels around the shaft intersection area. This kill limit closure and ride which following shaft reef intersection could have a detrimental effect on the long term shaft stability. This paper discusses underground instrumentation results and numerical modelling exercises carried out to confirm that the shaft system will he stable throughout the life of the mine. Instrumentation projects include closure and ride measured between backfill paddocks and haulage leveling exercises carried out to determine the far field rockmass response to mining with stiff backfill.

Gulf Coast domal salt mining operations have had sporadic encounters with methane gas emitted without any warning. In virtually all confirmed cases, the methane was localized in methane enriched zones. In a few cases large quantities of methane were expelled rapidly with salt outbursts, resulting in dangerous methane concentrations. Estimates of methane liberated by face blasts in methane-enriched areas is needed in determining how much air should be supplied to the face for proper dilution. A relationship between the gas content of salt samples collected from the face and the amount of methane liberated would be helpful in estimating how much methane will be produced by a face blast. Little is known about the layering or stratification of methane in large area-low velocity airways. This publication reports on three tests conducted by the Bureau of Mines which monitored the immediate return air of four faces during blasting. The test locations were in a methane gas-enriched section that had previously experienced two large outbursts and many smaller ones. A comparison was made between gas content values of face salt samples from the dissolution test and the gas liberation quantities. The characteristic movements of the methane in a large room with low air velocities were charted. This will help to better understand the factors involved in proper placement of methane sensors as a warning system.

"Problematic issues in materials handling applications are often amplified in the iron ore industry due to the relatively high density of the ore as well as the abrasive nature of the product. One of the main issues arising from the handling of iron ore is excessive wear, with two applications typically suffering accelerated wear issues being transfer chutes and conveyor belts. These wear issues are problematic due to additional capital costs, but mainly due to the associated downtimes resulting in the accelerated wear. Increases in mining and production capacities can have a major impact on the productivity of a mining and production facility during the construction and commissioning period. With minimised production loss in mind, a multi-phase modular plant design was implemented on the Khumani Mine in the Northern Cape, South Africa. The first phase involved a run-of-mine (ROM) crushing facility and the subsequent modular processing facility with capacity for 8.4 million tons per annum (Mt/a) product. An interim phase comprising modular additions to the processing facility increased capacity to 10 Mt/a product, with tie-ins occurring during maintenance periods. The second phase involves a second ROM crushing facility and modular additions to the processing facility, increasing capacity to 16 Mt/a product. This paper outlines the design considerations and limitations with modular design that need to be considered and shows how effectively construction and commissioning were implemented within shut-down and maintenance periods.

Conventional geostatistical algorithms cannot reproduce bivariate complexities such as inequality constraint, nonlinearity and heteroscedasticity. Poor reproduction of these features may decrease the accuracy and reliability of mine planning results. For example, it is not unusual to have an inequality constraint between primary and disturbing elements in a metalliferous deposit. Implementation of traditional methodologies for such complex data sets can lead to the incorrect reproduction of a bivariate relationship, which will affect the validity of NPV results. In this paper, an iron data set containing iron and silica grades with an inequality constraint between variables is introduced as a case study. This study proposes an algorithm based on a hierarchical sequential Gaussian cosimulation integrated with inverse transform sampling. The proposed methodology considers the linear inequation between two variables in the hierarchical cosimulation process to reproduce an inequality constraint. As a comparison, conventional sequential Gaussian cosimulation is also applied to the same data set to demonstrate the difference in bivariate relationships from both models. Unlike the proposed algorithm, the conventional cosimulation cannot reproduce an inequality constraint and slightly overestimates silica grades. The modelled realisations are then used to assess the uncertainty of a plan and generate a stochastic strategy that adapts the destination of the blocks depending on the scenario. Two-stage stochastic long-term production scheduling takes extraction decisions using average information (ie e-type model) and ore/waste destinations based on geostatistical realisations. As a result, the proposed strategy is closer to the upper bound, highest possible NPV for each realisation, than to the lower bound, deterministic strategy that does not manage the risk of sending extracted material to wrong destinations. Furthermore, Comparing production schedules resulting from proposed and conventional geostatistical methodologies shows the importance of inequality constraint reproduction and more accurate long-term mine planning.

Copper has been mined intermittently at Gunpowder, north of Mount Isa, since 1927. Most ventures have had some initial success but fluctuating copper prices, the small-scale of the operations and the remoteness of the site led to closures or sale. Processing routes have included direct sale of high grade ore, flotation of oxide and sulphide concentrate, and copper cement production from mine solutions. Copper cathode has been produced by heap and in-place leaching coupled with solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX/EW). Aberfoyle Limited recently purchased the Gunpowder operation and is expanding operations. An innovative high recovery tank leaching process, including a low temperature, low pressure autoclave, has been adopted. Copper cathode will be produced from an expanded solvent extraction/electrowinning plant at approximately 45 000 tonnes per year. The combination of expanded throughput and high metal recoveries will make Gunpowder a cost competitive producer.

With the depletion of the mineral reserves that can be mined by surface mining, demand for highly productive and safe underground mines will increase. Underground drill and blast techniques continue to be refined but true æmass productionÆ is difficult to achieve. As is evidenced by the longwall mining of coal, alternative mining methods based on mechanised mining can meet the expectations but the issues of how to effectively cut strong rocks, how to define the orebody and how the mechanised miners can be automated and maintained all need to be addressed. CMTE is working in all of these areas. We believe that the oscillating disc cutter may provide the long sought-after breakthrough in mechanised rock cutting. Disc cutters are one of the most robust designs of cutting tool and the cutters attack the rock in a manner which effects direct tensile breakage. The internal cutter drive and the inertial damping mean that the already low cutter forces are not all transmitted back to the machine, making it possible to design lightweight, flexible mining systems. For orebody delineation drill monitoring, drillhole logging and geophysical imaging are key procedures being developed at CMTE. To automate mining machines, work is progressing well in the development of systems for autonomous vehicle navigation and mining robotics. A strategic contribution to maintenance issues is being made through the development of procedures for automatic analysis of used oils, monitoring the strength of mechanical structures, and operating point optimisation.

Maximising ore tonnage at a selected target grade requires that appropriate ore identification criteria be established. Iron ore mining block models may consist of many millions of estimated blocks, each block corresponding to the selective mining unit (SMU), with grade interpolated from drill hole data. Each block can be considered as a potential ore candidate. Analysis of such a huge database can require large computational resources, especially for sensitivity analysis requiring multiple computations. However, an alternative streamlined approach is possible, where the data are compressed to an appropriately smaller and representative subset. The consequent data reduction not only makes it feasible to consider the simultaneous analysis of multiple pits but also considerably speeds up computation, enabling sensitivity analysis of the potential ore tonnage as a function of the required grade. Ore identification criteria can be successfully established using appropriately chosen reduced data comprising less than one per cent of the blocks. The ore identified is virtually indistinguishable in tonnage and grade from the ore that would be selected using the entire block model.Two methods of data reduction are tested: sampling (using a proportion of unaltered blocks) and binning (consolidating groups of blocks to a single average grade). The source blocks are first sorted (such as by location, analyte grade, principal component score, random order or value) before sampling or binning. In this study, the sorting options considered were by location and Fe grade. The effectiveness of each method was evaluated using the block model subsets to select the maximum tonnage of ore at a specified target grade. Block model data from an anonymous Pilbara iron ore project with about one million blocks averaging 1.132 kt were used. The blocks are from multiple resource models, to be blended to a single product. Sampling is shown to be superior to binning because sampling preserves the full variability while binning, although matching the mean block grades reduces their variability.It was found that the appropriately sampled data sets (sorted by location) gave results virtually identical to the results for the full data set, even when the samples comprised less than one per cent of the original blocks. The reduction in computer time to identify maximum tonnage at a specified grade was approximately proportional to the sample percentage. The increase in computation speed greatly facilitated sensitivity analysis. A sampled data set of one-eighth the total block model was used to investigate the effects of changing each of the component grades around the original grade specification. The results of this sensitivity analysis are discussed, and illustrate the potential benefit of carrying out sensitivity analysis in determining feasible and marketable product grades.CITATION:Everett, J E, 2015. Two major issues are to be addressed in the Copper Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines Limited. The first of these is the need to increase concentrator flotation capacity to increase copper recovery, while the second is the need to reduce the iron sulphide dilution to meet future smelting requirements. Extra capacity in the cleaner and retreatment sections of the concentrator have been identified as key target areas, with additional copper recovery of at least one per cent identified from plant trials. Extensive pilot plant tests have been undertaken to evaluate the performance of the Jameson cell compared to conventional mechanical cell and column circuits. This work has shown that Jameson cells present an opportunity to achieve the desired grade and capacity specifications at lower capital cost than available alternatives. This paper outlines metallurgical results of work undertaken in the Copper Concentrator, together with a summary of pertinent Jameson cell operating parameters investigated during the period.

Removing sulfur and phosphorus from molten iron can be expressed by the following reactions, respectively. [S]Fe + (O2-)slag = (S2-)slag + [O]Fe [P]Fe + (3/2) (O2-)slag + (5/2) (FeO)slag = (PO43-)slag + (5/2) Fe(liquid) These equations indicate that desulfurisation and dephosphorisation have opposite oxygen potential conditions. If a small amount of desulfurisation slag not removed is carried over to dephosphorisation process, the reaction of sulfur mentioned above proceeds toward left hand resulting in increasing sulfur content in molten iron. For better understanding of such re-sulfurisation reaction in hot metal pre-treatments, the present study aimed at evaluating the effect of iron oxide on the sulfur distribution ratio between slag and hot metal. To measure sulfide capacities and FeO activities simultaneously at temperatures below the melting point of pure iron, CaO-SiO2-FeO and CaO-Al2O3-FeO ternary molten slags were brought into equilibria with copper-iron-sulfur liquid alloys, and the equilibrium oxygen partial pressures were determined with an electrochemical technique involving the stabilised zirconia solid electrolyte. The experimental results showed that the sulfide capacity increased with an increase in FeO content, and this trend was consistent with the fact that FeO was basic. Although the addition of FeO raised the FeO activity and oxygen potential, the calculated value for sulfur distribution ratio between slag and hot metal increased with increasing FeO content.

Classification devices provide a link between comminution and flotation. Basically, it determines which particles are diverted back for additional grinding and which ones pass to downstream flotation. Therefore, the classifiers play an important role in the performance of a mineral processing circuit. Hydrocyclones are the most common classifiers used in wet grinding, despite being associated with poor classification efficiency. Hydrocyclones are widely used due to advantages related to low maintenance as well as reduced capital and operating cost. Other classifiers, such as fine screens, have much better classification efficiency compared to hydrocyclones. The major challenge of using screens in an operation, however, is their large footprint and increased maintenance requirements relative to hydrocyclones. Some researchers have demonstrated that switching from hydrocyclones to screens, as the classifier device in a ball milling circuit, resulted in a 20 per cent increase in plant throughput and significant improvements in coarse particle recovery, resulting in a 6 per cent increase in overall flotation recovery. However, it is known that these benefits of improved classification are very much ore specific, ie depending on the ore response. Therefore, there is a need to estimate the benefits of improved classification in pilot scale testing before the plant could consider the potential classifier upgrade. This paper presents the results of two pilot-scale grinding tests where the ore sample was processed using different classifiers: a traditional hydrocyclone and hybrid classification involving the use of a semi-inverted hydrocyclone followed by a screen. The size specific energy and circulating load were used to compare the performance of the grinding circuit. The grinding product was subject to mineral liberation analysis and the impact of classification efficiency on the mineral liberation is discussed in the paper.

In situ synchrotron X-ray and in situ neutron diffraction-based experimentation have been implemented to characterise the formation of the complex calcium ferrite iron ore sinter bonding phases silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) and SFCA-I. Experiments were carried out using fine-grained (<20 ¦m) sinter mixtures containing ~77 wt per cent Fe2O3, 14 wt per cent CaO, 3.5 wt per cent SiO2 and 5 wt per cent Al2O3, with diffraction data collected during heating until 1300 - 1350¦C, which was enough to ensure complete melting of the SFCA phases. In the case of the in situ synchrotron experimentation, results showed that altering the nature of the starting sinter mixture (ie substitution of goethite for hematite; substitution of an amorphous Al2O3-based mineral for gibbsite) did not have a significant effect on the thermal stability range of the SFCA phases. It did, however, have a profound effect on the formation and rate of consumption of the calcium-rich ferrite phases C2F and CF, and on the formation mechanisms of SFCA and SFCA-I. "Underground coal mining is the dominant method of extracting thermal and coking coal in the southern and western coalfields of New South Wales. Monitoring mining-related subsidence forms an important component of environmental impact assessments and subsidence management plans, particularly when there are conflicts between the interests and requirements of mining and environment and community groups. However, there are few specific guidelines for monitoring the impacts of subsidence on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, leading to inconsistent policy approaches and highly variable abilities of monitoring programs to accurately detect biological change.This paper highlights the use of a conceptual framework to guide the development of a long-term ecological monitoring program at an underground coalmine in the Western Blue Mountains, New South Wales. Two pilot studies are described: determining the level of observer agreement to assess the condition of a vulnerable tree species (Capertee Stringybark) comparing field sampling methods for detecting a rare heath shrub, Epacris muelleri, using a power analysis to determine sampling intensity requirements.These examples demonstrate that investment in initial pilot studies to test different monitoring approaches can have long-term benefits for stakeholders by more confidently being able to detect potential impacts.CITATION:McCaffrey, N?B,?Glenn, V, Erskine, P?D, Johns,?C?and Fletcher, A?T, 2014. The aim of this paper is to discuss how to form work and organisations in the mines of the future. The Kiruna underground iron ore mine in the far north of Sweden is used as an example on how technical development affects organisational issues like skills, work identity and gender. Over a period of 50 years one can see a transformation of work from manual underground work to automation and remote control from surface level. What characterised the old underground workface was the close relation between man and the hard rock and with arduous physical work under dangerous conditions. Today, the face miners are located on the seventh level of an office building close to the mine. There is also an emerging, and in many aspects already evident, knowledge transformation û from the old and obsolete physical and tacit knowledge and skills (for example the ability to æread the rockÆ) to something new, which can be described as abstract æhigh-techÆ knowledge and skills. The modern technology has created a new type of work û new in terms of competencies and knowledge as well as workload and organisation. At the same time the mining company are recruiting more women and promoting the former pure male work as attractive workplaces for both women and men. All this has effects on how individuals and company create and recreate skills, identity and gender. To some extent the technological development predestines these changes, but there are some choices to be done when forming good work and organisations for the mines of the future. The traditional mining workplace culture and behaviours and the old type of masculinity, the æmachoÆ style, will be challenged by the new æhigh-techÆ work and new competency demands. The changes risk meeting restoring responses, which can have negative impact on the performance of the organisation, for example making it inflexible and perhaps ælaggingÆ behind the technological development. These questions need to be handled when planning future mining.

Anglo American’s Los Bronces copper mine in Chile has been conducting detailed assessments investigating value adding options for their asset. The mine has conducted several detailed Mine-to- Mill and Grade Engineering studies to investigate increased throughput and head grade and to quantifying the impact of these approaches across the life of mine. CRC ORE has two key technologies namely Grade Engineering and the Integrated Extraction Simulator. These two technology suites have been combined to understand the technological landscape and associated value drivers suitable for application at Los Bronces. Detailed ore characterisation test work was conducted to:  measure and spatially model the propensity of ores to naturally deport and  develop customised blast models for Mine-to-Mill and Grade Engineering evaluation The outputs of this work were utilised to develop a block model populated with a range on new Grade Engineering and blasting parameters suitable for scenario analysis. To facilitate scenario analysis a high-fidelity value chain model of the Los Bronces operation from blasting to concentrate production was built in IES. IES was combined with sophisticated analytical tools such as Neural Networks to develop and reconcile a fully integrated value chain. The value chain model made it possible to simulate in IES all available blocks in the block model to predict throughput and grade changes for different strategic scenarios. The scenario analysis was run across 24 strategic combinations of Mine-to-Mill and Grade Engineering and comprised several million simulations. The scenarios investigated each technology independently and jointly to provide an attributed block model that can feed forward into technoeconomic modelling to determine optimal execution strategies for the mine. This paper presents the first published study combining Grade Engineering and IES to provide mass simulation capability to investigate strategic options for a mining asset.

Barcelona Metro Line 9 (Line 9) is an essential infrastructure, improving the transversal transport in Barcelona by connecting the greater part of the currently existing radial lines. The purpose of Line 9 is to create a peripheral line surrounding the city of 1.6 million people (metropolitan area exceeds five million), and includes 52 stations, of which a total of 32 are deep shafts and 19 transfer stations in a densely populated area with several geographical constraints.The tunnel has an inner diameter of 10.90 m, bored with an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) in soil sections with precast concrete lining type universal ring and segments 40 cm thick.A single tunnel solution was adopted, driven by functionality and costs savings. The internal tunnel section is divided into two levels to allow for one way rail transit including the platforms in each station on each level in order to optimise the space created by the TBM excavation and comply with the operational needs. Gold mining companies who are signatories of the International Cyanide Management Code (visit www.cyanidecode.org for further information) are required to measure WAD cyanide on-line and destroy WAD cyanide in excess of specified limits. Weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide refers to those cyanide species liberated at a moderate pH of 4.5 such as HCN(aq) and CN-, and the majority of Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag complexes with low dissociation constants. It is potentially toxic to humans and animals. Recognising and in response to the gold mining industryÆs need for an on-line WAD cyanide measurement device, Mintek recently developed the WAD Cynoprobe. The WAD cyanide analysis technique is based on the use of a ligand exchange reagent that liberates WAD cyanide from metal-cyano complexes. The ligand exchange reaction is represented by the following chemical equation: Metal(CN)X + yLigand <-> Metal(Ligand)y + xCN- The plant filtrate is treated with a ligand exchange reagent, to liberate WAD cyanide, before measuring the free cyanide concentration via amperometry. The instrument proved to be accurate and reliable in the laboratory as well as under industrial gold plant conditions during various trials. It has gained wide-spread commercial acceptance both locally and internationally. However, itÆs recent exposure to complex ore types have called for refinements to the analysis technique. It has been further developed to improve its precision and accuracy and to remove reagent and thiosulfate interferences. Its compatibility with the most commonly used destruction oxidants has also recently been investigated. The WAD Cynoprobe may be configured to measure both free and WAD cyanide concentration. Its fast analysis time, approximately 5 min, makes it suitable for use in the control and optimisation of the cyanide destruction and recovery process. Proper oxidant dosage control and monitoring of effluent concentration levels will ultimately result in less cyanide and post-destruction salts discharged into the environment.

"Many open pit (OP) mines with considerable vertical extent are approaching the end of their life-of-mine; some of them are seeking the opportunity to make the transition from OP to underground (UG) mining. The decision on the best location for transition from OP to UG mining should be addressed at the strategic mine planning stage. Conservatively, the transition to UG mining is considered near or after the exhaustion of the reserve within the ultimate pit.However, if UG is evident and exclusively viable from the inception, defining the best location for the transition through a conservative approach may not be an optimal option to explore. This clearly establishes the need for a mathematical model that aims to maximise the project value and considers OP and UG mining with crown pillar (CP) requirement simultaneously. Underground mine layout varies from one UG mining method to the other, and consequently the variation in the location of transition is eminent. Thus, focus on the selection of UG mining method must be a part of this analysisThis paper presents an implementation of an integer programming (IP) based mathematical model that evaluates the changes in mining layout and the project value under possible variation in the transition point from OP to UG mining for stoping and block caving methods. An IP problem is a mathematical optimisation or feasibility method in which some or all of the variables are restricted to be integers. The outcome of the implementation reflects that mining strategies with OP transition to stoping and block caving methods generated higher values than OP-only mining strategy. The case study not only demonstrates the difference in mining layout for both stoping method and block caving method, but also reflects that a joint consideration of OP mining, UG mining and CP placement helps to achieve maximum project value and resource utilisation.Citation:Darbritz, J, 2016.
