This paper describes the results of investigations into the relationship between specific gravity and chemical composition in the Cockatoo Island orebody, In the early investigations the samples were classified into groups according to porosity. This resulted in high, medium and low porosity groups, the latter being further subdivided into ore and waste. Whole number tonnage factors were assigned to each group. In the later investigations the reciprocals of bulk specific gravity and true specific gravity were ex- pressed as linear combinations of iron, silica and alumina using stepwise regression. The demand for iron ore has increased significantly in recent years, with new iron ore sources being mined to meet this demand. As the composition of sinter blends changes with the availability and cost of iron ore, so too does interest in the impact of new ore types on granulation and ultimately productivity. This paper describes a study into granulating characteristics of seven iron ore types, including various hematite and goethite ores. The effect of ore type on feed moisture requirements, green bed permeability, green bed strength and granule size distribution was examined for single ore blends containing coke, flux and returns. The ore size distribution was varied in these blends and its effect on granulating characteristics examined. It was found that the optimum moisture requirement of the ore was more dependent on ore type than ore size distribution, but ore size distribution (and specifically intermediate particle loading) had a greater effect on green bed permeability. The saturation moisture value for an ore was found useful in predicting both optimum granulation moisture and green bed permeability.

It is well known that the high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) can only be operated efficiently under choke feeding conditions in which a material bed is built up between the rollers to ensure interparticle breakage. By increasing the fines amount in the material bed up to a specific level with the recycling load, a uniform material bed is created and higher pressure gradient along the roller width is obtained which results in compact flakes including more fines. Extensive test work has been carried out with an industrial HPGR unit grinding cement clinker in a cement plant in Turkey. During the test work the recycling load of the circuit was changed to achieve different ratios to the fresh feed rate in order to identify the effect of the recycling load on the circuit performance. Six different tests were performed with the circuit at steady state. For each test, samples were collected from HPGR fresh feed and discharge, and total feed, then the particle size distributions of the samples were determined and mass balances around the circuit were calculated. The conclusion was that the reduction ratio of the HPGR increased with increase in recycling load. The flake densities showed the same trend with more compacted flakes being produced for higher recycling loads.

The Jianchaling gold deposit is located about 1200 km south west of Beijing in central China. The deposit was discovered in 1988 by the Northwestern Geological Exploration Bureau (711 Exploration Team). Sino Gold Limited, an Australian based company, developed the mine in 1998 and is currently operating a 1000 t per day underground mine, producing about 80 000 ounces of gold per year. The pre-mine resource for Jianchaling was 1.6 million tonnes at 9.85 g/t gold. The deposit occurs within the east-west trending Mesozoic Qinling-Dabie orogenic belt formed during the Yanshanian Orogeny. In the Jianchaling region, gold mineralisation is primarily hosted by regional west-northwest to east-southeast striking faults, the most important of which, the reverse sinistral F145 fault, hosts the larger gold deposits including Jianchaling. At the mine scale, the most important zone of mineralisation is localised within a shallowly north dipping dilation on the F145 fault. Proterozoic dolomite forms the hangingwall and serpentinite and talc schist the footwall to the fault. Within the footwall, serpentinite is the most important host rock to mineralisation. Initial alteration involves replacement of serpentine to dolomite ¦ pyrite, talc to ankerite ¦ pyrite, and magnetite and chromite to pyrite, the latter locally through a transitional hematite phase. Proximal to feeder structures, the carbonate minerals have undergone partial dissolution and replacement to quartz. Gold is related to arsenean pyrite and marcasite rimming and replacement of early-formed pyrite, and associated with iron release during the processes of dolomitisation, silicification and carbonate dissolution.

Production targets are the basis for almost every decision made by operations personnel in the daily operation of a concentrator. It is the production targets that determine how the plant is operated and therefore determine its efficiency. However, to achieve maximum plant efficiency production targets must be relevant to the process and achievable.In RoseberyÆs case, for many years, production targets were taken from budget data which, with the exception of mill feed tonnes and grades were carried forward from the previous budget. The zinc concentrate grade target was fixed at 57 per cent Zn, a long-term average; it was the accepted æstandardÆ for Rosebery. Historical data showed this target was never consistently achieved and plant efficiency was highly variable.Investigations into the possible causes for the variable performance ruled out plant and mechanical issues. Despite the Rosebery concentratorÆs age the plant and equipment are more than serviceable and reliable. The mineralogy of the ore and specifically the iron content of the sphalerite was found to be the most significant determinant of zinc concentrate grade. It was found with increasing frequency that the zinc grade of the sphalerite in the ore was below the zinc concentrate grade target. Consequently on these occasions attempts to meet the required concentrate target destabilised the process resulting in plant inefficiencies.Using the correlation between iron and zinc, data modelling was able to accurately predict the maximum zinc concentrate grade achievable for any ore type. By using on stream analysis instrumentation the operations personnel are now provided with constantly updated concentrate grade targets. By knowing the mineralogical limits of the ore at the time it is being treated process stability is maintained allowing plant efficiency to be optimised. This has resulted in a step change in plant performance and a significant increase in revenue.CITATION:Harris, G R, 2012. Underground development drill and blast practices have generally remained unchanged for decades. Historically, development optimisation has focused mainly on the application of perimeter control products in order to reduce overbreak, and efficiencies in development cycle times to increase advance rates. In today’s environment of ever increasing operating costs and lower ore grades, it has become even more critical to focus on the optimisation of drill and blast in development mining. It is a crucial component in ensuring mining schedules are maintained, but more importantly achieving the objective of getting to the orebody in the shortest possible time.This paper will focus on the development optimisation process used in a trial at Xstrata’s George Fisher Mine in North Queensland. Not only did the trial include the typical optimisation areas of charge loading practices, perimeter control methods, drill design standardisation and quality control processes, it also investigated the significance of delay accuracy with regards to perimeter control and drill design optimisation.One of the key measures of the trial was a comparative analysis between baseline development and development with the staged introduction of optimisation elements using 3D photogrammetry as a validation tool. A detailed cost analysis between the various stages was also a key measurable of the trial.The results of the work undertaken at George Fisher have shown that the accuracy of electronic detonators can produce significant benefits in development blasting. When combined with standard optimisation philosophies a substantial reduction in overbreak, ground support requirements and development cycle times can be achieved, whilst still being able to reduce the overall development operating costs.CITATION:Kovacs, J, 2014. An explosion occurred at Moura No. 4 underground coal mine in Queensland on 16 July 1986 and resulted in the loss of 12 lives. The official report of the accident concluded that the most likely source of ignition was the flame safety lamp. This paper describes an investigation of the behaviour of a flame safety lamp, similar to the one involved in the Moura explosion in atmospheres of methane, coal dust and air, carried out at the Queensland Department of Mines . Testing and Research Station. The behaviour of the lamp is described in conditions of varying methane and coal dust concentrations in air, and varying air velocity. Particular emphasis is given to the 'phenomenon of burning which occurs inside the gauze and which is capable of causing the ignition of an external explosive atmosphere.

Recent research by CRC LEME from an Australian mineral exploration perspective, has focussed on regolith architecture and mechanisms of geochemical anomaly formation, within transported regolith. Methods have been developed for the rapid production of regolith-landform maps which is the starting point for understanding regolith architecture in the third dimension. Methods for development of 3D regolith models are less well advanced, and require integration of all available geological and geophysical datasets, but still with a heavy reliance on drill-hole information. The base of the transported regolith û the unconformity û remains the most important regolith boundary for geochemical sampling in transported regolith terrains. A new generation portable spectral logger, employing a broader spectrum can interpret important features from drill chips within the regolith. This allows internal architecture, redox fronts and the all-important interface to be objectively identified. Transported lateritic components can provide vectors to mineralisation in depositional regimes. Palaeomagnetic and new radiometric methods which date individual phases of the regolith provide evidence of different episodes, each characterised by different geochemical dispersion patterns in transported regolith. Along with lateritic residuum, calcrete is prime sampling medium. Calcrete is probably enriched in gold through physical and biological processes, rather than straight chemical processes. In South Australia, the lowermost calcrete layer buried within the depositional regime, especially where it lies directly over the silcrete layer at the buried interface, is the desired sampling medium. Certain gum trees, with deep roots in transported regolith have been shown to record anomalous values of gold and basemetals in leaves, twigs and bark. Anomalous metals in acid-sulfate soil seeps can also provide a window through sedimentary cover in respect of mineralisation in the basement. A number of Yilgarn occurrences of gold anomalies in transported cover, strongly infer hydromorphic and biological mobilisation of gold. This inference is supported by micro-analyses of regolith mineral hosts in hardpans and mottled sediments, which show gold and pathfinder elements prefer to reside in goethite and specific types of clay minerals. This creates anomalies in specific mineral phases. However the inference that that these are sites of mobile or labile metal ions remains enigmatic. Similarly there is inconclusive evidence that selective extractions will provide an anomaly not otherwise detected by conventional total dissolution methods. Hydrogeochemistry is a promising exploration tool for basemetal exploration. The importance of microbes in both the dissolution and precipitation of gold in the Australian regolith is demonstrated. We are on the verge of identifying the functional gene sequence of individual active microbes. A consideration of possible mechanisms for creating anomalies in soils above transported regolith, presents difficulties in facilitating upward movement of ions from the watertable to the surface. Perhaps the best avenues of research lies with surrogate soil gases, and biotic transfers.

Recent significant advances in the Global Positioning System (GPS) have contributed to making real-time kinematic/dynamic process for decimetre to centimetre-level positioning more reliable and ready for the production-use. As a result of research and development efforts in this area, a robust real-time kinematic (RTK) GPS positioning prototype system has been established at QUT for both scientific and engineering purposes. This system is finding applications in a wide range of automobile robots or automatic guidance vehicle systems. This paper first summarises the theoretical basis necessary for centimetre real-time kinematic positioning, then gives a brief description for the real-time dynamic GPS system developed at QUT. The paper summarises the results of a designed vehicle tracking test. The results demonstrated that the differences between RTK filtering solutions and OTF solutions are in the order of magnitude of about 20 centimetres and the accuracy of OTF solutions are in the levels of two centimetres. This confirms that the RTK system delivers three-dimensional position with decimetre-to-centimetre accuracy. This particular RTK processing system is robust and reliable, although the system is referred to as a prototype and will be further developed.

During 1991 - 1993 the author interviewed approximately thirty senior managers of varying responsibilities in either the engineering, construction or operation of a heavy industrial facility. The purpose of the exercise was to determine the factors driving a deterioration of the working relationship between the engineering and the operating company following practical completion of a major project. From the research a number of conclusions have been drawn as to the root cause of the deteriorating relationship. For this paper we are drawing on this initial research and our ongoing experience of solving problems of this nature to present some fundamentals that can be used to break the breakdown maintenance cycle.

The Dugald River Zn-Pb-Ag deposit occurs within the complexly deformed and metamorphosed sediments of the Middle Proterozoic Cloncurry Terrane, Eastern Succession, Mount Isa Inlier. The sedimentary sequence comprises a thick package of variably carbonatic argillitic and siliciclastic sediments of the Corella Formation, Lady Clayre Dolomite and Knapdale Quartzite. A slate and calc-argillite unit locally referred to as the Dugald River Slates is the host to the economically significant deposit. The deformational history of the Dugald River area involved three phases of ductile deformation. The present geometry of the Dugald River Main Lode is recognised as a strike extensive steep westerly dipping tabular sheet, within which a steep north westerly plunging zone of pronounced thickening is evident. This zone is interpreted to have formed during folding via remobilisation of the sulphides into a shoot-like body, the geometry of which was controlled by stretching associated with the folding. Further modification of the shoot and sulphide re-distribution has resulted from late phase transgressive shears. The sulphide mineralisation is characterised by three distinctive sulphide types, laminated, banded and breccia, the distribution of which define two broad zones. The northern zone is a narrow I - 5 m thick stratabound unit comprising finely laminated and banded sulphide mineralisation within a well bedded fine grained argillite sequence. This is part of the Lady Clayre Dolomite sequence and is a predeformational precursor form of mineralisation. The southern zone comprises the thickest development of mineralisation (up to 30 m) characterised by slate-sulphide breccias and veins derived from complex polyphase remobilisation of the sulphide mineralisation. It is this zone which forms a stratabound locally transgressive body within the high strain Dugald River Slates and which contains the main body of economic mineralisation. Sulphide mineralogy comprises sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, galena and traces of chalcopyrite, pyrargyrite, tetrahedrite, marcasite and arsenopyrite. The present resource for the Dugald River deposit stands at 38 Mt grading 13.0 per cent Zn, 2.1 per cent Pb and 42 g/t AS. The Dugald River Zn-Pb-Ag deposit is regarded as an example of a syndiagenetic stratabound sulphide accumulation which, as the result of polyphase deformation and upper greenschist to middle amphibolite facies metamorphism, has undergone extensive remobilisation and Rccrystallisation.

The Century zinc-lead-silver deposit has a geological resource of 118 million tonnes averaging 10.2% zinc, 1.5% lead and 36 g/t silver. It lies approximately 250 km NNW of Mt Isa in NW Queensland, Australia, and is hosted by middle Proterozoic age siltstones and shales of the Lawn Hill Formation. Within the orebody, most mineralisation occurs selectively within black shale units as fine grained sphalerite and galena lamellae with minor pyrite and siderite. The black shale units are separated by weakly mineralised sideritic siltstone horizons. The deposit is unmetamorphosed and only weakly deformed, displaying excellent lateral stratigraphic and grade continuity.

Sintering of lead and zinc concentrates is practised by Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited to provide both desuiphurised lump sinter feed, for simultaneous reduction to zinc and lead in the Imperial Smelting Process blast furnace, and sulphur dioxide gas for sulphuric acid manufacture. From November, 1969 a 20 percent increase in production rate has been obtained through improvements in operating technique. A gradual increase in bed permeability was achieved by modifications to the feed mix conditioning equipment and by improving moisture control. However advantage could not be taken of the higher permeability to increase sulphur elimination because the hardness of the lump sinter decreased. Higher throughput, better quality sinter and more stable sintering conditions were however made possible by simultaneously: 1. reducing segregation and compaction in the sinter bed, by narrowing the discharge opening of the main layer feed hopper, 2. reducing the sizing of sinter returns to give a closer size spectrum of particles in the feed mix, and 3. increasing the sulphide sulphur content of the feed mix to give higher bed Temperatures.

Techniques and results achieved during the excavation of the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop (HURL) are summarised and discussed in the context of the various restraints present in a typical urban construction project. Mechanical methods (as distinct from those utilising blasting)accounted for the bulk of the excavation. Ground support was critical in this particular geological excavation setting, but is not discussed in detail except insofar as it constitutes a restraint to excavation progress.

There are many variables in a flotation concentrator, some of which are outside the actual flotation stage, which affect metallurgical performance. The number of such variables which can now be measured on a continuous basis has increased significantly over the past 20 years. They can be broadly classified under the headings of physical, chemical, and elemental. In this paper reference is made to a number of such variables, and comment is made on the state of the art in their measurement. Although not confined to development in Australia, particular reference is made to the considerable Australian contribution in this area of Technology.

The complexities of mining in current economic conditions, where ore extraction schedules are varied on a weekly basis so as to ensure constant supply to the process plant, can result in a number of scenarios that pose geotechnical challenges. This paper presents a case study where alterations in the mining schedule of a particular mine resulted in the necessity to mine under a large uncompacted embankment, ie integrated tailings and mine waste land form. To effectively ensure that ore recovery was maximised, a well-designed slope monitoring system to evaluate design performance and to provide timely warning of impending failures was imperative. In order for an appropriate slope monitoring strategy to be developed, a thorough understanding of the potential slope failure mechanisms, capabilities and limitations of available monitoring techniques is required. Communication of the monitoring results and response strategy to alarms generated by monitoring systems must also be carefully considered to maximise effectiveness. The results of preliminary stability modelling can be used to guide the design of a monitoring system, which in turn can then generate data which can be used to iteratively refine the geotechnical model. This paper illustrates the development and implementation of a slope monitoring system and associated communication system, using the Daydream embankment at Fortescue Metals Group's (FMG's) Cloudbreak Operations as a case study.

Approximately 2.4 million ounces of gold and 11.3 million ounces of silver have been produced from the Umuna Lode by Misima Mines Pty Limited between June 1989 and the end of Decemeber 1996. Reserves remaining at the end of December were 32.1 million tonnes at 1.0 gram per tonne gold and 9.7 grams per tonne silver. To attain precious metal production of this volume, an estimated K60,000,000 (1996 Kina) was spent on exploration alone. from the 1940s to the present day. Exploration expenditure for the 1996 calendar year was approximately K4,400,000. With such a large investment in exploration, large quantities of data were generated and stored in various forms. To make best use of this data, it was necessary to organise and systematically store this data in a form compatible with a modern Geographical Information System (GIS). The Umuna Lode on Misima Island is a low sulphidation gold- silver deposit dated at 3.5 ¦ 0.2 Ma. The deposit is controlled by the 50 to 100 metre wide Umuna Fault- a moderate dipping, brecciated clay- chlorite- carbonate altered, normal fault zone. There is approximately 230 metres of mostly dip slip offset on this fault, which is measurable by the offset of the Cretaceous schist, marble and greenstone host sequence. Late Miocene microdiorite spatially related to the Umuna Lode does not appear to be genetically related to the gold- silver mineralisation. GIS was introduced to Misima at the end of 1995 and until recently has been mostly used for data storage and retrieval, the over- laying of various data sets to assist in targeting prospective areas, and as a drafting tool. The use of data-driven, predictive data analysis is the most recent effort in maximising the use of the extensive Misima database. By characterising the key controls and properties of the Umuna- type mineralisation, a Weights of Evidence, data-driven analysis produced a prospectivity map of Misima Island. The purpose of this map was to identify prospective areas yet to be explored and to assess the effectiveness of exploration to date.
