Indiscriminate surface disposal of coal waste in New South Wales has created a serious fire hazard and increased air pollution.A survey of numerous dumps, as well as particular investigations of one badly-constructed dump, showed that factors conducive to ignition and propagation of fires in waste dumps were high contents of combustible material (coal, pyrite, wood. paper. grease), size segregation leading to ready movement of air and moisture shape of the dump (e.g. protruding sections or porous junctions), high ambient air temperatures, bush fires, and even deliberate lighting.Control methods applied in the past tended to be haphazard and unsuccessful. Under Australian conditions the technique recommended for control of existing dump fires, based on experimental work, is to spray the dump with a chemical fire retardant (e.g. a 2 per cent solution of sodium tetra borate and ammonium phosphate), to cover the dump with a suitable soil, and to seal the surface with a I per cent solution of aluminium sulphate or sodium metasilicate. The recommended method of dump construction to prevent fires is to level and seal the site, to construct a firebreak around the dump area, and to build a rectangular dump with minimum size segregation and compacted surfaces.

During the period 1981 - 1991, Esso Australia and their Joint Venture partners have discovered about 180 MB of liquids (crude and condensate), 60 MB natural gas liquids and 800 - 1000 GCF of gas. A total of 48 wildcat wells were drilled including 12 new pool discoveries drilled from platform facilities. Significant discoveries include the West Tuna, Kipper, Blackback and Terakihi fields. These four discoveries, contribute to 75 per cent of the total reserves discovered in the last decade and were all high-risk plays. The Kipper discovery, in the pre-Latrobe Golden Beach Group top sealed by volcanics, and the Blackback-Terakihi discoveries, located on the present day continental slope in water depths ranging from 300-700 metres are both the result of successful drilling outside the traditional exploration bounds for the basin. During the last decade, Esso and its partners have spent about A$400M on wildcat exploration activity. The exploration success rate, excluding platform based drilling, has been 50 per cent for wildcat wells. On a technical front, the last decade has heralded substantial improvements in seismic data quality. Peak frequency content in seismic data at the Latrobe Group target levels is now double that of the early 1980s. Significant advances have also been made in our understanding of sequence stratigraphy, geochemistry and geohistory of the basin.

The Golden Cross Mine is located within the Waitekauri Valley near the southern end of the Coromandel Ranges, eight kilometres north-west of Waihi, North Island, New Zealand. The mine is owned and operated in a joint venture by Coeur Gold NZ Ltd (80 per cent) and Viking Mining Ltd (20 per cent). The underground mine produces gold and silver from low sulphidation epithermal quartz veins which developed in the shallow parts of a meteoric water dominated system during the Upper Miocene (7.36 - 6.67 Ma). The Empire Vein System is hosted within a dilational structural environment which developed at the lithological contact between acid intrusives, rhyolitic-dacitic tuffs and reworked pyroclastics, and undifferentiated andesites. The formation of the Empire Vein System was controlled by the rheological properties of the host rocks and variable displacement along a series of normal, right lateral, easterly-dipping faults. These faults represent sub-parallel zones of master shearing within a Riedel shear model. Underground mining extracts ore from the steeply dipping hangingwall and the complex footwall veins of the Empire Vein System. Initially sills are driven along the hangingwall vein on ten to fifteen metre sublevel intervals. In the footwall zones where significant mineralisation adjacent to the hangingwall sill drives has been identified, a series of cross-cuts and footwall drives (sub-parallel to the hangingwall sill) are also developed. Where continuity of mineralisation and ground conditions permit a combination of post pillar flatbacking and AVOCA longhole benching methods are used. Detailed underground mapping of lithology, quartz veining and major structures provides the information for designing ground support and footwall pillars, planning mine development and ore extraction sequencing. Sectional interpretation displays the vertical extent of faults, fractures and the vein system. The mining methods used underground at the mine have evolved through a thorough understanding of the structural complexity and the systematic geological mapping of the Empire Vein System.

A study was undertaken using various methodologies to determine the optimum loading and hauling configuration for different haul routes at Callide Mine, a coal mine located in central Queensland. The study involved development of an effective flat haul model that was used to estimate production rates in truck and shovel circuits that employ two excavators of differing capacities then Queuing Theory to construct a capacity constraint model for scheduling purposes to assist in truck allocation and finally a cost model to determine the most cost effective fleet configuration.The model was calibrated using haul road design and performance data of trucks and excavators currently in use at the mine. The study examined the effects of cycle time for different truck and excavator fleet configurations on production rate and costs.The study found haulage cost was directly related to cycle time while production rate reduced with cycle time. The study indicates the approach taken in combining a cost model with a capacity constraint model offers a simple and effective method of scheduling an optimum number of trucks in a haulage circuit.CITATION:Campbell, S and Hagan, P, 2012. Mineral exploration is the business of finding and defining ore deposits. Ore bodies are developed into mines and mines supply every mineral and metal upon which our society is built. Whether it be steel for our bridges, cement and aggregate for our concrete, coal for our power stations, copper for our wire, phosphate for our fertiliser or gold for our jewellery it first must he found, then mined and processed before we can use it. There is no other way.

Comminution continues to be the most capital-intensive unit operation in mineral processing. The fundamental purpose of comminution is to liberate the valuable minerals so that they can be economically concentrated into saleable products. Declining ore quality characterised by lower grade and increased complexity requires significant energy consumption for comminution. Low-grade magnetite ores are typically fine-grained and require fine to ultra-fine grinding (P80 ~ 30 - 40 µm) to enhance its liberation from the typically siliceous gangue matrix. Historically, this has been achieved using multi-stage crushing and grinding technologies, which require high energy consumption with low energy efficiency. This motivated innovations in energy efficient technologies for comminution. Such technology has been developed in the IMPTEC super-fine crusher. It is an innovative, dry (with the potential to be operated wet), media-free, energy efficient crusher that can to reduce 10 mm feed particles to 19 – 30 µm with very low recycle loads. In this study, the mineralogical and physicochemical characteristics of crushed magnetite ore using the IMPTEC super-fine crusher have been investigated in comparison with those of rod milling. The super-fine crusher generated higher liberated magnetite minerals in the – 300 + 212 µm and < 45 µm size fractions compared to rod mill. Both comminution devices generated large low-grade hematite and goethite middlings. However, the rod mill produced higher locked/unliberated hematite and goethite compared to that of the super-fine crusher. Quartz mineral had the highest liberation irrespective of the comminution device used. The super-fine crusher generated higher entrapment of other minerals within the silica matrix compared to the rod mill. The breakage mechanism of the super-fine crusher which is predominantly through high compression with shear, generated improved mineral liberation in the coarse size fractions compared to the predominant abrasion and attrition breakage mechanisms of rod milling. Properties of the soil profile fundamentally control water-limited ecosystems. Soil water availability affects vegetation dynamics of plant communities, but is also affected by these communities in return. Understanding this eco-hydrological interplay and the role of physical soil restoration is crucial for successful rehabilitation and management of post-mining landscapes in semi-arid areas. However, uncertainties exist in both the mathematical description of plant communities within ecological submodels and the predictability of future rainfall events. This study uses information gap decision theory combined with an ecohydrological system model to investigate how both uncertainties impact decision-making in the context of ecosystem rehabilitation. A range of management strategies are investigated to identify the optimal soil thickness for successful rehabilitation of native plant communities in Central Queensland. The results emphasise that thicker soils can counterbalance uncertainty in mathematical description of plant communities by increasing the simulated survival probability of plant communities. However, the influence of thicker soils on the robustness of plant communities against a change in future rainfall amount is rather marginal. By allocating an economic value for restoring a particular thickness of soil layer, these results can be used to evaluate the costs of ecosystem re-establishment with regard to two target measures - the survival probability of the plant community and their robustness against climate change.CITATION:Arnold, S, 2012. Mines, after becoming operational, often retain the same support and reinforcement designs developed in the feasibility study. These designs are conceived from limited drilling data and regional experience, thus having an empirical flavour. Empirical designs are perceived to be conservative, catering for a variety of failure mechanisms, which are not always present in mine development drives.This begs the question: If you were to invest in the necessary resources to obtain sufficient data and complete the required analyses for the different development drives in the mine, to engineer a support and reinforcement scheme with the capacity to match the demand of the rock mass, what is the difference in cost when comparing an empirical design to an engineered design?To answer this question, mine tunnels with different geometries and orientations, where detailed structural data was available, were selected for a comparative design exercise. Material cost, development cost, cycle time and professional fees for engineered and empirical designs were estimated. The outcome is summarised in the following paper that discusses the process followed and the results of the design comparison.

The mining industry needs to attract and recruit young talented people. An important task is, therefore, to create an attractive mining workplace that engages with, and motivates youngsters who are not particularly interested in working in the industry. This paper aims to illustrate a way forward for the mining industry to form healthy and safe workplaces honouring key components such as knowledge, skill, co-operation, continual development and acceptance of diversity. This is a way to create a vision of healthy and safe mining work. The mining industry must work towards zero vision; a future without accidents and hazardous environments. In this paper the authors discuss different aspects of an ‘attractive workplace’ and summarises lessons learnt in 26 statements dealing with safety, both physical and social work environments, and social responsibility. The authors hope these recommendations will provide some guidance for how attractive workplaces should be designed for future deep mining.The paper is based on lessons from two large European projects, a Swedish-Polish project: The Smart Mine of the Future; and a European Union project: Sustainable Intelligent Mining Systems (SIMS). A requisite corollary of mineral sand mining on North Stradbroake Island (Queensland (Qld), Australia) has been the progressive rehabilitation of post-mined lands for the revegetation of native subtropical Eucalypt communities. Since 2005, rigorous environmental monitoring has been undertaken to verify the annual development of post-rehabilitated sites. From these long-term analyses, a chronosequence of land revegetation (ranging from three to 26 years postrehabilitation) was developed to examine the rehabilitation trajectories of various post-mined sites in relation to proximal undisturbed locations. Here, we identified that some sites may be deviating from the intended natural analogues as evidenced by the opportunistic colonisationand otherwise æinvasiveÆ behaviour of a regionally native species (Black Sheoak - Allocasuarina littoralis), which appear to be displacing the intended Eucalypt varieties. The irregular shape of the Rosebery orebody, coupled with the inconsistencies in grade over short strike lengths, has meant stoping blocks have had to be small to combat dilution and stability problems. In the past, each lens was divided into regular block sizes and developed up to five years before production commenced. There were two major drawbacks to this practice; firstly, existing development deteriorated over time therefore requiring rehabilitation prior to production. Secondly, the pre-determined blocks could not be easily changed to incorporate changes in mining technology or economic circumstances. Bearing these problems in mind, it was evident that any new lens development had to be designed to allow maximum flexibility. The lens being currently developed is J lens. It represents approximately 50 per cent of the current reserves tonnes, and 65 per cent of the zinc metal. Its importance to the mine's future cannot be over emphasised. At its core the lens is up to 25 m thick at grades of over 30 per cent zinc. The practice of dividing the orebody into levels and sublevels, with consequent crowns was no longer acceptable because of restrictions in stope design and potential loss of ore. To assist in the development planning of J lens, a geostatistical block model was applied in long section to graphically represent the lens. Areas of high zinc concentration, as well as zones of uneconomic material were identified by using the model. This has meant that the development could he targeted, enabling stope delineation to occur in the lens without significant ore loss. Because of limited development resources, and the need to bring J lens on-line in the near future, the development strategy has had to focus on 'just-in-time' principles, rather than accessing the whole lens from bottom, and progressing upwards. Tight development schedules have required individual stoping block to be developed on such factors as grade and available tonnes rather than as a vertical sequence.

On 26 June 2000 a hydraulic fill retaining barricade failed at the Bronzewing mine in Western Australia. The barricade failure resulted in the release of 19 000 m3 of saturated hydraulic fill into the mine, which caused the deaths of three miners. Following this tragic accident, the practices and procedures of mines using hydraulic fills came under intense scrutiny by regulatory bodies and mining companies. At this time, the use of hydraulic fill at NormandyÆs zinc/copper Scuddles mine was suspended and waste rock became the sole backfill material in use underground. By 2003, development of the mine adjacent to Scuddles, Gossan Hill had progressed to a point where a self-supporting fill material was required to enable full recovery of high-grade ore. Cemented hydraulic fill (CHF) was identified as the optimal fill type and work began on designing appropriate management procedures and controls to ensure the safe implementation. This work included definition of the fill properties, plant design and construction, reticulation system design, design of stope barricades and drainage systems and fill placement control and monitoring practices. CHF placement began on 16 July 2004 and has continued to date. Significant operational experience has since been gained in areas including plant performance, fill product quality assurance, barricade construction, stope drainage and in situ performance.

Submerged arc welding (SAW) is one of the significant metal-joining processes for manufacturing marine vessels, steel pipes, and offshore structures with high deposition rate and engineering reliability. Welding flux serves several essential functions, including atmospheric shielding, arc stabilisation, bead morphology control and weld metal (WM) refinement. Therefore, from a thermodynamic point of view, the focus for flux design and WM compositional/microstructural modification has been placed to elucidating the transfer pathways and mechanisms of major alloying elements, such as Si, Mn, Ti and O during welding. To this end, a thermodynamic model has been established to predict alloying element contents in the WM. Such functions are enabled by the physicochemical properties of the fluxes, which are inherently rooted in the nature of the fluxes. A unique yet systematical investigation, including physicochemical property changes and structural evolution behaviours, has been conducted over the wide range of fluxes applied to actual welding of EH36 shipbuilding steels. Combined with spectroscopic methods, structural behaviours of network formers such as SiO2, Al2O3 and TiO2 and network modifiers such as MgO, MnO and CaO have been illustrated. Viscosity and ionic conductivity have been found to be positively associated with the degree of polymerisation.

Flotation surveying can be an extremely powerful means of determining opportunities for circuit optimisation and benchmarking. The type of survey employed depends heavily on the nature of the information required from the survey. It follows then that the type of survey determines the type of samples required; however, regardless of the type, the success or failure of a survey is often dependent on the correct used of appropriate sampling techniques at each sampling point. For a successful flotation plant survey it is vital that the correct samples be collected at the correct time in respect to the feed and each other. This paper discusses the current best practice sampling methods used in flotation surveying and discusses in detail the ideal sample masses based on theoretical analysis. Farming on bauxite residue using screw propelled equipment (SPE) has been commonly practised to accelerate dewatering and as it promotes consolidation and enhances storage capacity. However, it is unclear when and how often farming should be conducted during the transition of bauxite residue from slurry to dry solids and how deep each slurry deposition should be. To address this issue, three desiccation tanks were established in the laboratory to investigate how much farming could enhance the desiccation and consolidation of tailings. The cuboid tanks, of 350 mm in height and 300 mm in width and length and with an opening on the top, were placed on load cells to monitor the water loss during desiccation and were instrumented with moisture and suction sensors designed and developed at the University of Queensland to measure the water content profile of the residue. The bauxite residue, composed of silt-size particles with low plasticity, was hydraulically deposited in the tanks as a slurry at 27% solid content, resulting in 100 mm depth of solid material settling. Evaporation was enhanced by placing two identical electrical fans above the tanks. Two phases were conducted. In the first phase, the two tanks were left untouched for evaluating non farmed conditions and for calibrating sensors, while in the second phase, three tanks were subjected to atemporal farming using purpose-built screw propelled equipment. The experiment was terminated when the residue was completely desiccated. This paper reports on the instrumented tank set-up and the results obtained to date.

Adopting environmentally acceptable practices in New Zealand is a crucial requirement for mineral wealth development. Recent planned expansions in the coal and gold industry have increasingly placed mining in the media spotlight. A lack of appropriate standard environmental guidelines has resulted in inconsistent responses and assessments of current and proposed mines. These inconsistencies have lead to delays in decisions on developing economic mineral deposits that may have only minor short-term impacts, and have also allowed unacceptable environmental management practices to continue elsewhere. A research collaboration between CRL Energy, Landcare Research, University of Canterbury and University of Otago aims to provide regulator groups and the mining industry with a unified approach to the requirements of the Resource Management Act 1991,the legislation that largely drives the nationÆs environmental policies and guidelines. The tangible outcome of this research program will be water quality and impact management guidelines integrated into a decision-making framework. The result of this unification will assist in the development of viable mineral deposits and minimise environmental impacts. The framework will be derived from a synthesis of three objectives. Objective 1 identifies potential water quality impact. This objective is based on a targeted geochemical study of the lithology and waterways of the West Coast and Southland regions. Objective 2 categorises the degree of impacts on the ecology of receiving aquatic ecosystems and determines the processes that drive aquatic ecosystem recovery. Objective 3 identifies best strategies to sufficiently manage impacted ecosystems, and to prevent future unacceptable impacts. Wide consultation with representatives of the mining industry and regulator groups will occur frequently during the development stages of the framework. It is anticipated that this multidisciplinary approach will provide a robust and coherent, standardised system that will assist in achieving industry and environmental targets.

In 2012, in response to an increasing potential unfunded liability, the Western Australian Government passed the Mining Rehabilitation Fund Act 2012. The intent of this Act was to introduce an annual levy on tenements covered under the Mining Act 1978 based on the area of disturbed land. The fund generated from these levies could then be used to rehabilitate mining sites where all other options to ensure rehabilitation had been exhausted. The fund could also be used to rehabilitate abandoned sites or features which, in Western Australia, number over 10 000.The Mining Rehabilitation Fund (MRF) was implemented on 1 July 2013 for an initial voluntary year. It becomes compulsory on 1 July 2014. By the end of March 2014, nine months into the voluntary period, over $6.5 million had been paid into the fund. The incentive for tenement holders to voluntarily enter the fund was the opportunity to have unconditional performance bonds held against their tenements retired. While there will be circumstances where bonds will continue to be applied, it is the State Government’s intention to retire most of the bonds.The MRF has received mostly accolades from industry and companies that have entered. Most have found the system easy to use. The MRF was also cited as a reason for Western Australia’s improved position in the Fraser Institute’s annual survey of mining jurisdictions. Work is now starting on processes to select priority abandoned mines for rehabilitation.This paper explains the background to the MRF and its development, and reviews its implementation during the first, voluntary, year. It also discusses how the fund will be managed into the future and what this will mean for both abandoned mine features across Western Australia and any future abandoned mine sites.CITATION:Leybourne, M L, 2014.
