STORAGE AND FLOW Introduction The layout and design of a bin or stockpile for bulk solids should assure reliable feed at the required time and rate without spillage and, when required, without segregation and degradation. The typical procedure in the design for gravity flow follows these steps: 1. The bulk solids to be stored are identified and the range of moisture content, temperature, feed rate and time of storage at rest, as well as the storage capacity, are specified. The materials of construction of the hopper, that is of the converging part of the bin, are decided upon. Hopper liners and coatings to reduce wall friction are considered. 2. The flow properties of the bulk solids and the friction angles against the wall materials are measured for the expected range of conditions. 3. The width of a slot outlet needed for reliable flow of each solid under the full range of conditions is determined from the tests. This dimension is an explicit measure of flowability of a solid. The widest slot determines the critical solid and the critical conditions. 4. A suitable feeder of size sufficient for the widest slot outlet is selected. 5. On the basis of the measured wall friction angles, a suitable wall material is selected and a mass flow hopper is designed to ensure reliable and uniform flow of solid into the feeder and to minimize the load on the feeder. The mass flow hopper may extend upward to the intersection with the cylinder thus producing a mass flow bin. Alternatively, the hopper may terminate at a height equal to a few widths of the outlet and then expand at a less steep slope in its upper part in order to save headroom, or it may terminate in the flat bottom of a bin or stockpile. The choice depends on the flow properties of the solids and the size of the bin or stockpile. 6. The design of the bin is completed for the specified storage capacity. Multiple hoppers and

Tarnish films on some of the common metals (particularly on copper and silver) have been of much scientific and commercial concern for a long time, but before the development of the electrical method1 of measuring film thicknesses there was no satisfactory quantitative approach by which to study the separate parts of these complex films. This method has been adapted to the measurement of duplex (cuprous-cupric) oxide films on copper.2 In the present work it has been used to measure tarnish films on copper when they were mixtures of cuprous oxide and cuprous sulphide, and also when they contained cuprous oxide, cupric oxide and cuprous sulphide, each component part being measured at a different potential value. Oxide-coated copper specimens, prepared by heating copper in air at chosen temperatures for given periods, were exposed to moist hydrogen sulphide in air to forml the various oxide-sulphide films studied. The comparative resistances afforded by (I) different thicknesses of oxide films, and also (2) equal thicknesses of oxide and sulphide films, against severe attacks of hydrogen sulphide were measured. The electrical method requires that the time be observed for the cathodic reduction of each part of the film substance, and these respective time values multiplied by the constant current give the corresponding quantities of electricity expended. Then each millicoulomb per square centimeter represents a film thickness of M X 108____ 2DX 96,494 X 103 where M is weight of oxide (or sulphide) giving one gram-atom of oxygen (or sulphur) for cathodic reduction, D is density of the oxide (or sulphide) and t is the thickness in Angstrom units per millicoulomb per square centimeter. The value of t for cuprous sulphide (cubical) is 14.27, and is obtained by substituting 5.78 for D and 159.20 for M in equation a. Previous values hf t for cuprous and cupric oxides (12.36 and 6.39, respectively) were used in the present work.

THE property of the Andes Copper Mining Co. is in the central part of the Republic of Chile, Province of Atacama, 147 km. (91.5 miles) eastward by rail from the port of Chanaral. At this point the Andean system is made up of two principal ranges. The mine is on the westerly slope of the outer, or western, range, at a mean elevation of 3250 m. (10,500 ft.). A meter-gage railroad extends from the company's port at Barquito, near Chañaral, to the reduction plant at Potrerillos. This road has a total length of 151 km. (94.0 miles), of which 93 km. (57.79 miles) are owned by the Andes Copper Mining Co. The remainder of the road is owned by the state. The company operates its trains over the portion of the road owned by the state, under an agreement with the Chilean Government. The mine is connected with the reduction plant by a meter-gage railroad, 10 km. (6.214 miles) long, which extends from the coarse-ore bins at the metallurgical plant to the underground storage bins at the mine. Tunnels make up 60 per cent. of the total length of this railroad. As is characteristic of the Andean region in Chile, the topography of the locality is extremely rough, and a number of points near the mine have elevations of from 15,000 to 16,000 feet. History of Potrerillos Mine The ore occurrence has been known for many years, and many of the claims under individual ownership were worked in a small way before the property was acquired by the present owner—the Andes Copper Mining Company. The highest grade oxide ores near the surface were mined by primitive methods and, after sorting, the product, assaying around 15 per cent, copper, was hauled by mule carts a distance of about 80 km. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the usefulness of systematic analyses of weakness patterns. The term weakness here includes structural features such as fractures, foliation planes, lineaments and bedding. Many of these features are mapped by geologists in the field, but analysis of the field date is frequently overlooked. Examples are presented to show the value of such studies in petroleum and mineral exploration, in dam site selection, and in regional tectonic interpretations. Numerous theories have been presented to account for the mechanics and time of origin of fracturing. This is an extensive subject and cannot be reviewed in detail here. The reader may wish to refer to other papers.*"5 It is sufficient to say that most fracture patterns can be related to one or more of the following force mechanisms: compression, tension, torsion and fatigue (inheritance by upward propagation of pre-existing fractures). Fractures generally occur in sets in a district. The angular relationships and other characteristics of the individual sets frequently help in determining the force mechanism and movement history of the deformation. From a geometric point of view fractures are commonly referred to as longitudinal, cross, or diagonal (shear), depending upon their orientation relative to other major structural features such as anticlinal axes and so forth. These terms will be used from time to time and are illustrated schematically in Fig. 1. FIELD PROCEDURE AND TREATMENT OF DATA In fracture studies it is very important to collect adequate field data. Fig. 2 illustrates a notebook sheet for recording significant field observations in sedimentary rocks. Slight adaptations have to be made for igneous and metamorphic terrains. Fracture density and persistence are very important factors in petroleum exploration for fractured reservoirs and mineral exploration. Since 1950, several papers have been published which have described various methods for studying mobility ratio effects. The methods which have been described for studying mobility ratio effects include X-ray shadowgraph techniques, stepwise potentiometric model procedures, stepwise numerical procedures, gelatin model studies and fluid mapper model studies. The purpose of this paper is to describe a procedure for using a resistance network for studying mobility effects. DESCRIPTION OF APPARATUS The basic unit of the experimental model consisted of a network of 840 resistors fastened to a sheet of black Lucite which was mounted on a wooden frame, Fig. 1. The dimensions of the Lucite sheet were 36 X 36 in. The resistors were fastened to the Lucite sheet at mesh points by means of snaps. The mesh points were arranged in a square pattern, 30 X 30 in., spaced at intervals of l1/2 in. The snap fasteners permitted several resistors to be "stacked" in parallel. By adding additional resistors to the basic unit, the specific resistance on each side of the flood front could be varied. The square network of resistors represented one of four symmetrical elements of a five-spot well pattern. The current input was analogous to an injection well and the current output was analogous to a production well." The power supply was essentially a full wave transformer-rectifier system for converting alternating-current into direct-current. The DC voltage could be varied from 41.43 to 290 v in steps of 41.43 v by selecting the proper outlet jacks. The major components of the power supply were: a Triro power transformer, R 11-A; a dual 5Y3 vacuum tube; two gas filled OD-3 tubes; and a Triplett voltmeter, model 227-1, range 0 to 500 DC v. The voltages at the mesh points were determined with a Keithley electrometer, model 210, No. 185, manufactured by Keithley Instruments, Cleveland, Ohio. A Heathkit vacuum tube volt-

Tensile, creep-rupture, and stability tests were employed to evaluate the effect of a-strengthening and ß-complexing additions on the base composition Ti-6Al-3Mo. The ultimate objective was to produce an alloy of greater strength than the Ti-7A1-3Mo alloy. Strengthening of a was accomplished by additions of 2 and 4 pct Ge, 4 pct Sn, 4 pct Zr, and 2 pct Sn-2 pct Zr. Making the ß more complex while keeping the total of ß-stabilizing additions constant at 3 pct resulted in higher tensile strengths but lower creep and rwpture strengths, especially at 1000°F. None of the more complex versions of the base alloy offers greater promise than the Ti-7A1-3Mo alloy. However, some improvement in the strength of the latter may follow from additions of zirconium perhaps up to 4 pct. PREVIOUS work directed at the development of titanium-base alloys with: 1) minimum room-temperature tensile elongation of 10 pct in 1 in., 2) high creep resistance at elevated temperature, and 3) the ability to retain original room temperature tensile ductility following exposure to creep conditions at elevated temperatures, demonstrated Ti-Al-Mo ternary compositions in the range 5 to 7 pct Al-3 to 6 pct Mo to be the most promising. Of this group the Ti-7Al-3Mo alloy was the strongest.'-= The objective of the present work was to determine if alloys of this type could be further strengthened by making additions which dissolve preferentially in the a-phase and by making the ß-phase more complex. For this study the base composition Ti-6Al-3Mo was selected rather than Ti-7Al-3Mo in order to minimize the possibility that in a more complex alloy with a-strengthening additions, low ductility might obscure the strength contribution. 5.3-1. General Public Resistance to Strip Mining. Surface (strip) mining is the oldest recorded method of extracting coal and other minerals from the earth. This method of mining completely alters the topography of the earth's surface, leaving an area of more or less parallel ridges or of peaked mounds of the materials which overlay the mineral seam. It destroys all original vegetation and provides materials for new type soil. During the early years the acreage mined by this method was small, land was plentiful, and with a growing young nation no thought was given to the restoration of the disturbed areas to some form of productive use. Early in the present century the development of steam shovels and drag-lines made it possible to remove thicker overburden to recover the products. With the deeper digging, the size of the disturbed areas increased. With this increase in the size of equipment and the improvement of blasting techniques, mining was expanded into more prominent locations and to areas of more valuable land. The more progressive operators became aware of the need to reclaim those areas for some productive use. Electric shovels with capacities of up to 200 cu yd and draglines with capacities of 145 cu yd, capable of uncovering products over 100 ft below the surface, are now in use. Combined with the increase in the size of equipment, the expansion of contour mining or rim stripping in the mountainous areas has focused public attention on the need for a sound reclamation program for all disturbed areas. APPEARANCE. After mining, the areas consist of varying percentages of rock, shale, slate, and soil material devoid of all plant and animal life. Unless a definite reclamation plan is carried out, many of the mined areas will remain bare for a period of years. The topography of the area is completely altered. What may have been level to rolling land in cultivation, in grass, or in timber is thrown up into a series of ridges or mounds.

The study of cobalt-platinum alloys has been of interest since they represent a class of permanent-magnet material in which the disorder-to-order transformation plays a controlling role. The magnetic properties of alloys in the range 40 to 60 at. pct have been found to be greatly influenced by composition and heat-treatment. The peak properties of 4700 coercive force and 9,000,000 gauss-oersteds energy product were obtained by controlled cooling and aging. These high values combined with ductility and machin-ability give the alloys useful characteristics although their high cost limits their application. THE cobalt-platinum alloys have been of interest in the study of permanent-magnet materials ever since the discovery by Jellinghaus that they had unusually high coerceive-force values.' The high coercive force was associated by Jellinghaus with the disorder-order reaction which occurred in these alloys. This was later verified by Gebhardt and Koster in a detailed study.2 An investigation of the structure, mechanism, and kinetics of the disorder-order transformation and resulting property changes in cobalt-platinum alloys has been in progress for some years. Certain phases of this study related to equilibrium rela- tions, and to the mechanism and kinetics of the ordering reaction have been published previously.3-5 In this paper, the results of the processing and heat-treatment studies on 40 to 60 at. pct CO alloys are presented. The magnetic properties have been found to be influenced greatly by the composition, by the cooling rate from the disordering treatment, and the final ordering time and temperature. Coercive force values, Hc, of 4700 oersteds and energy values, (BH)m, approaching 9,000,000 gauss-oersteds have been obtained by controlled cooling and ordering. The equilibrium pressure of nitrogen gas over pure silicon metal and silicon nitride has been measured in the temperature range 1400° to 1700°C. From the experimental data, the standard free energies and enthalpies of formation of Si3N4(a) have been calculated as functions of temperature over the above temperature range. Utilizing data in the literature and the results of this investigation, the specific heat, molar enthalpy, molar entropy, standard enthalpy of fornation, and standard free energy of fornation are estimated for the temperature range 298° to 1400°C. THE high-temperature thermodynamic properties of many metallic nitrides are not well established at present. This is a serious deficiency because nitrogen and nitride-forming metals are important alloying additions to steels, and knowledge of the interaction between nitrogen and these elements is essential to a better understanding of the behavior of steels. Metallic nitrides also are used as refractory materials. Consequently, the investigation reported here was undertaken to provide more complete information on the standard entropy and free energy of formation of silicon nitride. The experimental technique provided a direct measurement of the equilibrium pressure of nitrogen gas in the range of 1413 to 1700°C for the reaction: 3 Si(1) + 2N2 (g) = Si3N4 (a) [ 1 ] and below 1413oC for the reaction: 3Si(c) + 2N2(g) = Si3N4(a) [2] APPARATUS The experimental system consisted of a crucible assembly, a reaction chamber, and a gas supply and vacuum system. The Crucible Assembly which contained the equilibration specimen and molybdenum radiation shields with a susceptor for induction heating is shown in Fig. 1. Two covered, high-purity alumina crucibles, one nested within the other, contained the susceptor, shields and specimen. Central openings in the upper shield and crucible covers permitted on optical pyrometer to be sighted into the central cavity of the specimen. The specimen itself was a 5/8 OD by 1-in.

For the purpose of obtaining some first-hand data in regard to the shooting down of coal in bituminous mines, it was the writer's good fortune to be employed as a shot-firer for almost one year. In all, 6020 shots were fired by him during this period. All of the work was done in what is known as the South Main section of the No. 2 Mine of the Ellsworth Collieries Co., Ellsworth, Pa., a subsidiary of the Lackawanna Steel Go. Position of Shot-firing in the Cycle of Operations The established practice of the Ellsworth Collieries Co. calls first for the undercutting of the coal by electric chain machines across the face of the entry or room. This is followed by replacing any posts removed by the machine-runners, or the setting of new posts or timber, as may be required. After this has been done the machine cuttings are loaded into cars. Then the coal is spragged, and a shot hole drilled to the depth of the undercut. Next in order, the shot-firer loads the hole and fires the charge. The working place is then cleaned up, timbered if necessary, the sides and face squared up, and loose material taken down. The face is again ready to be undercut. Materials Used Permissible explosives were used exclusively in blasting coal. These were Carbonite No. 2, a nitroglyccrine explosive; and three different makes of ammonium nitrate explosives, Tunnelite, Red H, and Mine-ite 5-D. The last-named was used during the greater part of the period. It is interesting to note that even at the beginning of this work, the gases resulting from the explosions of the charges caused no especial distress on. the shot-firer's part and this continued to be the case except on the occasions when a change was made from one class of explosive to another.

Discussion of the paper of A. L. Sweetser, Tress., xxxviii., 236. CHARLES H. WHITE, Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass. (communication to the Secretary*) :-Those interested in leaching-processes gladly welcome contributions on either laboratory-tests, such as are reported by Mr. Sweetser, or mill-tests made on larger quantities of ore; and especially valuable are such reports, even with negative results, if the methods adopted are the outgrowth of an intimate knowledge of the conditions to be met. It seems very desirable, therefore, that as complete details as possible be given in reporting on such tests, particularly with respect to the character of the ore under examination. The questions of prime importance in the sampling of ore and in the making up of charges for laboratory-tests are those respecting its grade and uniformity. In Mr. Sweetser's paper the first of these questions is answered definitely, but the answer to the second, although apparent on inspection of the results, might be more strongly emphasized with advantage, since it is only on account of the extreme uniformity of the ore that the satisfactory results obtained could have been expected. It seems advisable to call attention to the fact that for average ores, and more particularly for uneven, or 11 spotted ores, the quantities used by Mr. Sweetser are not usually regarded as sufficient to insure satisfactory results. Let us examine the method somewhat in detail. The ore was crushed to pass a 5-mesh screen, and a sample of 45 lb. was taken out for assay and tests. The diameter of the largest grain of this ore, according to Richards,1 was 2.67 mm.-assuming here, as in the following cases, that the wire of the screen was of the largest size used for the purpose, thereby giving any possible advantage in this respect in favor of the method. The table in Richards's book, p. 852, shows that 45 lb. is a sufficient quantity for a fair sample with uniform ores, but not sufficient

William M. Courtis, Detroit, Mich. (communication to the Secretary*):—I have a few items to add to the history of the Lake Valley mines. In December, 1879, I was sent to the Bassic mine of Colorado and then to Lone mountain, near Silver City, N. M., and to various copper-camps in Arizona. I staged from Glorietta, N. M., to Tucson, Ariz., stopping at Silver City to see the Cosette mine. This mine led to the opening of the Lake Valley mines, and is a deposit of similar formation. New Year's day, 1880, found me crossing the Rio Grande above the Jornado del Muerto. At Aleman, Victorio's band crossecl four hours ahead of us. We picked up four wounded soldiers to take to Fort Bayard, for during the day the colored troops under General Hatch had been driving the Indians back through the San Andreas mountains. The traveler of to-day little realizes the dangers of these trips, when over very rough roads we made about 100 miles in a day and a night. I subsequently made this trip six times, up to 1882, and each time I missed an Indian attack by from one to four days. The day I arrived at Silver City news had come of the massacre of 75 women and children at the San Francisco ranch. The fighting-men of' Silver City had gone to rescue others. I was the only passenger from Socorro, N. M., until we picked up the soldiers. The next day we came suddenly on 5 of Victorio's band, but we had picked up several miners, so our stage bristled with guns, and we mere let alone. At or near my stone quarry, 6 miles from Socorro, 9 men, were killed by the band that, a day or two after, killed George. Daly, Lieutenant White, and all their men. During this raid, our miners and women at the mine slept in the tunnel. At the Cosette mine I had 35 men at work. These Indian raids had

The principal interest in the oil situation in Colombia during the year centered around the enactment of the new petroleum law and the applications for concessions subsequently made by various interests. The year was a comparatively uneventful one from the standpoint of actual operations of drilling and development. There was a falling off both in exploratory work and in the development of producing properties; and as a result of curtailment of production, the output of oil from the country dropped to the lowest level since the completion of the looping of the Andian pipe line to the coast in 1927. Legislation Law No. 371 of 1931, with its Regulatory Decree No. 1270, was enacted during the year and marked Colombia's attempt to encourage more extensive exploration and development of the prospective oil resources of the country. Some of the outstanding provisions of the law are as follows: Tracts may be acquired by a concessionnaire directly and by transfer ranging from 5,000 to 100,000 hectares, except in certain reserved territories east of the summit of the eastern cordilleras where the maximum is increased to 200,000 ha. A security deposit of $1 per hectare, minimum $25,000, is required on government grants, and is returned to the concessionnaire only upon the fulfillment of stipulated terms of the law. Rentals, increasing progressively from 10c per hectare per year the first two years to 50c per hectare the sixth year, are required up to the start of the production period (beginning of development). The concession terminates 30 years after the beginning of the production period and can be extended for 10 years more at the option of the contractor. Wells must be produced at no less than 25 per cent of their maximum capacity. Royalties on oil from national lands vary from 2 to 11 per cent of the gross product, depending on the distance of the concession from the port of loading. The power plant of the Burro Mountain Copper Co. is located near Tyrone, N. M., at 5,950 ft. elevation. It is interesting because it uses the largest stationary Diesel engines in the United States. The general layout of the plant is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The building is of steel-frame construction with hollow-tile walls and corrugated-iron roof; the floor is concrete and all windows have steel frames, making a fireproof building. The building is made to accommodate one more electric generator unit which is being installed; also two 4,000-cu. ft. air compressors direct-connected to three-cylinder engines with the same size cylinders as the electric units. The power plant consists of two 815-kva., 60-cycle, three-phase, 6,600-volt, 180-r.p.m. generators, direct-connected to five-cylinder, two-cycle Diesel engines; the necessary circulating pumps for cooling water, cooling towers and oil storage tanks. A portion of the power is used in the same building as the generating units to run one of two 200-kw. rotary converters delivering 260-volt direct current, and a 2,500-cu. ft. air compressor, delivering air at 95 lb. pressure, direct-connected to a 400-hp., 6,600-volt, three-phase synchronous motor. The remainder of the power is used to run a 1,500-ton concentrating mill 3 ½ miles from the power house, various hoists, pumps and motors about the mines and the lighting and water-works of the town of Tyrone. The direct current is used for electric traction in the mine, also to run hoists and motors that were installed before the new power plant was built. Due to the large hoists that take starting peaks of 250 kw. and the 10-ton electric locomotive that takes at times 150 kw., the load is extremely variable, as shown in. Fig. 3.

I will endeavor to describe the methods of silver-mining and smelting employed by the natives in Mongolia. Modern methods have been applied there, but with little success; and, since they are familiar to most members of the Institute, I will simply mention that the failure was due to the high price of coke used in smelting the ore in modern furnaces, and to the unsuitable mill-machinery employed for concentrating the galena, which is finely distributed in the ore. The Jehol silver-mines are situated about 45 miles NE. of Jehol, the capital of Mongolia. They embrace two mines, 5 miles apart,—the Ku Shan Tze mine and the Yen Tung Shan mine. They were first worked by natives 50 years ago, about the time when mining was so flourishing in other parts of the world,—for instance, in California and Australia. The upper part of the vein is galena mixed with iron-stone, and is 2 to 4 ft. thick. At lower levels the vein is composed of silver-lead ore running between quartz-porphyry walls. Limestone, talc and black shale, colored by graphite, are found in other parts of the mine. Crystalline limestone is found 1 mile NE. of Ku Shan Tze. Granite is encountered in the Yen Tung Shan mine. Mining.—The native method of working the mines is most primitive. The same method may have been employed a thousand years ago. A small inclined shaft, 4 ft. by 4 ft., is sunk in the vein-stuff where the appearances are most favorable. Another shaft is sunk 20 or 30 yds. away, for ventilation. The shaft follows the vein in a zigzag fashion in whatever direction the vein appears to be richest. Timber is used only in soft ground. Where the ground is hard, the roof is cut into an arch-form. In some places, instead of using ladders, steps are cut in the rock, just wide enough to hold one foot. The deepest native workings are 400 ft. below the

The following descriptions and explanations apply specifically to the use of the Hotchkiss Superdip, but there are no apparent reasons why they should not apply to any magnetometer. This paper is a product of work in the practical field for several years with the Hotchkiss magnetometer, mostly on mineral deposits in the southeastern United States. The paper describes the result of an attempt to develop a practical and economical field method that approaches, as nearly as possible, the utmost accuracy of which the magnetometer is capable. As there are many published descriptions of various magnetometers and magnetic methods, it would be superfluous to describe such instruments here, but a limited bibliography on the Hotchkiss and Askania magnetometers is appended. The Hotchkiss and the vertical Askania magnetometers have, respectively, maximum sensitivities of approximately 5 and 30 gamma per instrument scale division. Purpose of New Method The purpose of the method described in the following paragraphs is to eliminate, as far as possible, all corrections of field data that cause complexities and inaccuracies in the results of magnetometer surveys. Magnetometer field observations must be corrected for periodic variations in the intensity of the earth's magnetic field, as well as for temperature variations, both of which take place during the course of a day. These variations do not seriously handicap magnetometer work on highly magnetic deposits, but it is impossible to obtain accurate results, by the conventional methods in use today, over weakly magnetic or diamagnetic deposits. This is due to the physical inability to obtain by such methods sufficiently accurate data in the field to make dependable corrections. The magnitude of the necessary corrections of field observations frequently exceeds the magnitude of local magnetic anomalies obtained over various types of mineral deposits. The orientation of metal crystals and grains, both large and small, can be detcrmined conveniently and accurately without the use of X-ray apparatus. This seems to be appreciated by so few metallurgists that it may be useful to explain in detail the method we have found most satisfactory in the laboratory—the reflection of light from crystallographie etch pits. This note includes a description of a suitable inexpensive instrument and instructions for etching various metals and for plotting the data. As the stereographie projection is used to facilitate handling the data, this note may he considered as an appendix to an earlier review of the metallurgical uses of the stercographie projection.' Various methods involving etch pits have been used by other investigators. Bridgman's method2 consists of attaching the specimen to a sphere (a transparent sphere is convenient4 , holding it at arm's length, and marking a spot on it when it has been turned so that the eteh pits reflect light into the eye of the observer from a lamp standing behind him. It has an accuracy of about 2" and is extrernely rapid. A greater accuracy can be obtained by having the reflected light fall on a screen, as has been done by Czochralski,5 Chalmers,6 and Schubnikov.7 All of these methods have been intended for undeformed single crystals. Tammann and his coworkers3,8 developed a method for estimating the number of grains in a polyerystalline aggregate having orientations in a given region of the stereographic triangle and thus obtained statistical information about deformation and reerystallization textures. While the method has had some use in recent years,9 it is not applicable to the majority of problems in physical metallurgy. Smith and Mehl10 determined orientations by plotting the directions of the sides of individual etch pits on a stereographic projection. The accuracy is limited to about 3" and the method requires careful polishing and high magnification.

Hadfielcl steel has been studied by transmission electron microscopy to determine the microsl.rtic-ture of the cold-worked material, which has been a subject of controversy for many years. The presence of fcc deformation twins in specimens deformed in tension, by hamnzering, and by explosive -shock loading at room temperature lzas been established by electron diffraction. No evidence of a mar tensite was detected in any of the speciwens. Small amounts of E martensite were idenLified in the hamnleved specimens. DESPITE numerous researches on Hadfield steel since its discovery in 1882, there is still disagreement on the nature of transformations in the cold-worked material. Collette el al.,' using X-ray and electron diffraction, have found evidence for stacking faults, E martensite, and a martensite in Hadfield steel deformed in tension at room temperature. Nishiyama and Simizu,' using electron microscopy, have found stacking faults and E martensite in hammered Hadfield steel. White and Honeycombe have concluded from X-ray diffraction that Hadfield steel remains fully austenitic even after severe cold work at -196 Previous work by the author, indicating the presence of a, martensite in deformed Hadfield steel, was in error due to a faulty interpretation of the electron-diffraction patterns. Various workers,5'7 over the years, have speculated on the presence of deformation twins in Hadfield steel, largely from such circumstantial evidence as the persistence of slip bands with repeated polishing and etching, the presence of serrations in the stress-strain curve, and the absence of evidence of a martensite by X-ray measurements. The advent of electron-transmission microscopy and se- lected-area diffraction has made possible the positive identification of fine deformation twinning. PROCEDURE For tensile tests, standard ASTM specimens of 2-in. gage length, ground from 0.12-in. Hadfield steel sheet, were solution-treated at 1050°C for 30 min in a salt bath, to avoid decarburization, and water-quenched. The grain size was about 0.01 sq mm. IN connection with other investigations on the properties and characteristics of chilled iron car wheels, the question as to the best range of annealing temperatures was raised. Chilled-iron wheels are cast with a chill against the tread and the inside of the flange, the remainder being in sand. The composition of the metal is so chosen that under these conditions the tread and inside of the flange will show white iron to a depth of from 5/8 to 7/8 in. (15 to 22 mm.), the remainder of the wheel becoming graphitized or gray. In order to relieve the stresses set up during cooling under such drastic conditions, the wheels are stripped from the mold, while still red hot, piled in a soaking pit, and allowed to cool very slowly from their temperature at stripping. Obviously the most suitable temperature for this annealing is the highest at which no formation of graphite occurs within the white tread and at which the wheels can be stripped from the molds. Inasmuch as no direct determinations have been made of the temperatures at which the' formation, of graphite takes place in white iron of compositions used in car wheels upon annealing, it was considered worth while to determine these temperatures as a means of establishing the maximum temperatures at which the annealing of the wheels may be carried out. In the course of this work, some incidental observations were made which are of interest in connection with the theory of graphitization in white iron. The literature on the subject of the formation of graphite both during cooling at casting and upon annealing is very extensive and can be best studied by reference to a comprehensive discussion of the subject by Hatfield. 1 Perhaps the most important contributions of previous investigation are the following: 1. Whether a given mass of molten iron becomes white, mottled, or gray upon casting, depends on its composition and its rate of cooling through the temperature range of solidification and immediately below.
