Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD), founded in 1942, is located near the town of Itabira, Brazil. Its iron ore deposits include over 500 million metric tons (mt) of high-grade hematite and about 2 billion mt of itabirite (banded rock formed by thin alternate layers of hematite and silica). These deposits are part of the Iron Ore Quadrangle, of which the overall reserves have been estimated at more than 30 billion mt. The magnitude of the project meant difficult early years for the company, including large investments, extensive railroad rehabilitation, and construction of ore port and ore handling facilities. Companhia Vale do Rio Doce was organized as a stock company, and 91% of its shares are presently owned by the Brazilian government. Financing has been accomplished in part through loans from international monetary agencies foreign banks, and foreign industry, as well as Brazilian banks. The company markets mainly abroad. In 1967, it exported 10.6 long tons (It) of ore, principally to West Germany, Japan, Netherlands, Italy, France, United Kingdom, and the United States. The Rio Doce geographic region where CVRD operates is strategically located among the large population centers of Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, and Vitoria (Fig. 1). It covers an area of approximately 81,000 sq km in the states of Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo, and its population in 1968 was about 3.5 million. This region presents excellent prospects for development, with factors favorable for forestry, agriculture, grazing, and exploration for minerals other than iron ore, Electric power (hydroelectric plants) is available, as well as two main systems of transportation: the Rio-Bahia highway and the Vitoria-Minas Railroad. The precipitation of nitrogen in quenched and aged CY-35 at. pct Re was followed by internal-friction and electrical-resistivity measurements. It is shown that the precipitation kinetics of nitrogen from solution are many orders of magnitude lower in this alloy than in chromium. The reluctance of nitrogen to precipitate from sol~ction can be attributed to the composilional r-eadjustnzents required in the z.icinity of a chromium nitrade particle for gowth to occur. AS part of an investigation of the mechanism by which rhenium increases the low-temperature ductility of chromium and other Group VI-A metals, it was of interest to compare the concentration of interstitial elements retained in solution in chromium with that of a ductile Cr-Re alloy. The presence of certain interstitial elements in chromium has been shown to decrease its ductility1-5 and, of these interstitials, nitrogen is believed to have the most detrimental effect on mechanical properties. Thus, a comparison of the disposition of nitrogen in chromium with that in a ductile Cr-Re alloy might provide information about the mechanism whereby rhenium enhances the ductility of chromium. In previous internal-friction studies it was shown that the equilibrium solubilities of nitrogen in chromium and Cr-35 at. pct Re did not differ greatly.= However, results indicated that the actual concentration of nitrogen retained in solution at ambient temperatures is likely to be considerably greater in the alloy than in chromium because the precipitation kinetics of nitrogen are greatly retarded by the addition of rhenium. BITUMENS have been defined by Abraham1 as substances of variable color, hardness, and volatility; composed principally of 'saturated hydrocarbons, substantially free from oxygenated bodies, sometimes associated with mineral matter; the nonmineral constituents being fusible and largely soluble in carbon disulphide. The principal bituminous substances other than petroleums known to commerce are: (1) native asphaltites, such as gilsonite, grahamite, and glance pitch, distinguished by their hardness and relatively high fusing point; (2) native asphaltic pyrobitumens, such as wurtzilite, distinguished by their infusibility and comparative insolubility in carbon disulphide; (3) mineral waxes, such as ozokerite, distinguished by their high content of crystallizable paraffins; (4) native asphalts, containing varying amouqts of mineral matter, distinguished by the comparative absence of crystallizable paraffins; and (5) bituminous residues obtained from the distillation of petroleum. GILSONITE Gilsonite, a black native asphaltite 98 to 99.9 pct pure, characterized by a hardness of 2 (Mohs), a specific gravity of 1.01 to 1.10, and melting point of 230° to 400°F (K and S), is mined commercially only in northeastern Utah. It occurs in parallel, almost vertical veins, from a few inches to 18 ft wide and 8 to 30 miles long, that cut across the Tertiary limestone and shale of the broad Uinta Basin. The bitumen is believed to have been distilled by heat from oily material in the underlying Green River shale. At the Rainbow mine of the American Gilsonite CO.,† the gilsonite, formerly extracted in an opencut by a system of slopes and benches, is now mined by shafts and horizontal drifts. The median angle of relatively few two-dimensional observations provides a satisfactory value for dihedral angle determinations. Those data that contain bimodal or non-equilibriated dihedral angle distributions are readily detected. THIS paper is concerned with a statistical simplification for determining dihedral angles in solids. Microstructures are partially controlled by relative energies of interphase boundaries and grain boundaries. smith1 has shown rather conclusively that such boundaries may be equilibrated to give a vectorial balance at grain and phase edges. Thus if an accurate measurement is made of the dihedral angle associated with grain and phase edges, an accurate calculation of the relative energies may also be made. The accurate measurement is difficult because the dihedral angle involves two planes in three dimensions, and only a two-dimensional cut through the dihedral angle is usually observed. Such a two-dimensional cut is statistically random provided there is no preselection or orientation. Harker and parker2 have shown that the mode of the frequency distribution of observed angles is within 5 deg of the true angle if the true dihedral angle is 120 deg. smith1 had calculations made to show that the same generalization could apply to dihedral angles of 30, 60, 90, and 150 deg. This procedure of requiring the determination of the statistical mode is time consuming because experience has shown that more than 200 angle observations are necessary before the mode is clearly indicated. It is possible to determine the dihedral angle with equal accuracy with only 25 angle observations if the median angle is used in place of the mode angle. An "international gold conference" was held at Spokane, Wash., on Sept. 5, 1918, under the auspices of the Northwest Mining Association, which was attended by a large number of engineers, mine operators, and bankers, representing the northwestern states, as well as Alaska and British Columbia. The principal subject under consideration was the doleful condition of the gold-mining industry, gripped between the diminished purchasing value of its product, and the increased cost of its operation. Two resolutions were adopted by the meeting. The first approved the resolution adopted Aug. 12 by the American Gold Conference, a permanent organization formed at Reno, Nev., in which it is stated that relief by the United States to the gold producers of this country should he made to correspond with the increased cost of production, the extent of the relief to be fixed from time to time to Meet changing conditions. The second resolution, adopted after serious and long-continued discussion, was introduced by F. A. Ross, mining engineer, of Spokane, and a member of the Institute, and was as follows: WHEREAS, it is now clearly understood and agreed by the allied nations that national gold reserves must be augmented without delay if rapidly expanding credits are to be secured; and WHEREAS, at this time, the production of gold is daily decreasing to an alarming extent because of well known conditions that, render the mining of gold-bearing ores unprofitable; and WHEREAS there is no way by which the mining of gold-bearing ores may be made profitable except by the direct' aid and influence of the government; and WHEREAS the government has appealed to the mining industry for practical information and practicable suggestions upon this subject; therefore, be it

In a recent series of papers,1-3 it was shown that a variety of apparently different types of macrosegrega-tion result from the same basic mechanism, the inter-dendritic flow of solute rich liquid to feed solidification and thermal contractions. The important parameter governing sign and extent of segregation was shown to be (v.?T)/ where v is interdendritic flow velocity, ?T is temperature gradient, and E is rate of temperature change. It was proposed in one of the previous papers that the "negative cone of segregation" often found at the base of large ingots results from the large value of (v. VT)/E expected to pertain there. The reason why this parameter is expected to be large in that location is the high flow velocity to be expected there, as discussed earlier,' and as shown schematically in Fig. 1. In this note, two experiments are summarized which are intended as laboratory simulations of the inter-dendritic flow behavior sketched in Fig. 1 and, therefore, of the "negative cone of segregation". Experimental procedures employed are as described in the the earlier work.3 Alloy cast was nominally Al-4.5 pct Cu. Fig. 2 shows one of these ingots, a "prism" ingot, 6 cm high by 12 cm wide by 10 cm long, unidirectionally solidified from a water cooled base. In this ingot, in-terdendritic flow velocity increases near the upper portion of the ingot because of the gradually decreasing ingot cross-section. Calculations were presented earlier of the negative segregation to be expected in this type of ingot,' and results presented in Figs. 2 and 3 agree closely with those of earlier calculations. THE melting of cathode copper, usually containing 99.98+ per cent. Cu, would appear to be a simple matter. Owing to the well known affinity of copper for sulphur, however, so much sulphur is absorbed by the copper during the operation that a long and expensive refining process is required to remove it, and the final product is inferior in purity and lower in electrical conductivity than the original cathode copper. The furnace operation, as now conducted, includes the following stages: 1. Charging the cathodes into the furnace. 2. Melting the cathodes. 3. Oxidizing period-saturating the copper with cuprous sub-oxide and bringing the metal to the condition known as "set copper;" this is now done by blowing air into the molten bath of metal. 4. Reduction period, otherwise known as "poling," whereby the oxygen previously added is removed by covering the molten bath completely with coke or charcoal and introducing large poles of green wood; this reduces the cuprous sub-oxide, bringing the copper to the "tough pitch" stage ready for casting. 5. Casting Period. Many experiments have been made to obviate the long periods of oxidation and subsequent reduction, with no success. While the copper first, cast will be good, as indicated by the set surface of the bars, it is impossible to hold it to the "tough pitch" condition, and long before the whole charge has been poured the copper will become "overpoled," entailing numerous difficulties. Sulphur has always been blamed by the furnace men as the reason why this refining process is necessary, yet the literature on the subject does not sufficiently emphasize how small a proportion of sulphur will ruin copper for practical purposes.

The Pyhäsalmi mine of the Outokumpu Co. is located in central Finland (Fig. 1). The deposit was discovered in the autumn of 1958. Construction of the mine was started a year later, and production began on Mar. 1, 1962 (Fig. 2). At present, 750,000 metric tons (mt) of ore and a nearly equal amount of country rock are mined annually. Slightly over one-half million tons of various concentrates are produced per year, of which 85% is pyrite concentrate, 10% zinc concentrate, and 5% copper concentrate. The pyrite concentrate is treated in the company's pyrite smelter,1 yielding elementary sulfur, sulfur dioxide, and iron-oxide cinders, as well as electric power. Thus all the sulfides, totaling 75% of the ore, are of economic value. This is a fact which had a bearing on the development of the stoping method. GEOLOGY The ore is of breccia type containing fragments of country rock of varying sizes. It is coarse-grained pyrite ore containing sphalerite and chalcopyrite as a matrix between the pyrite grains. Only small amounts of pyrrhotite have been observed in certain marginal parts of the orebody. The ore averages 0.85% Cu, 3.0% Zn, 38% S, and 33% Fe. The orebody extends from the surface down to at least 500 m, which is the lowest level from which present information has been obtained. Horizontally, the orebody is 650 m long. It is 75 m wide at its central part, narrowing towards the ends (Fig. 3). At a depth of 115 m, the orebody suddenly narrows down to a thickness of 25 to 30 m. In the northern part of the orebody, the dip is 50° to 70°, but elsewhere it is almost vertical (Fig. 3).

The critical resolved shear stress of aCu-A1 single crystals has been investigated as a function of composition, testing temperature, and strain rate. The strength, and its temperature and strain rate dependency increase markedly with aluminum content. The solid solution strengthening at 4.2°K is much larger than at room temperature. The activation energy for the low temperature dislocation cutting process increases from about 0.17 ev for a 0.5 at. pct A1 alloy to about 0.50 ev for a 14 at. pct A1 alloy. This result is attributed to an increase in the width of extended dislocations due to the known decrease in the stacking fault energy. In addition, the activation volumes at 4.2 and 77°K decrease with aluminum additions. Concerning the solid solution strengthening in the 296° to 373°K range, no definite conclusions are reached, but it is suggested that subgrains and cutting of subgrains are important. In a previous paper,' the authors reported that adding aluminum to copper produces two types of strengthening: a yield point effect and an increase in the lower yield stress. This behavior is illustrated in Fig. 1 by shear stress-shear strain curves of furnace-cooled single crystals of pure copper and Cu-14 at. pct A1. The yield point effect, At, was thoroughly studied previously1 and shown to be associated with short-range order. The present paper reports an investigation of the lower-yield stress in aCu-A1 single crystals as a function of composition, testing temperature, and strain rate. ELECTROLYTIC, production of cadmium at the Great Falls plant started in the first part of the year 1925. Prior to that time, an experi¬mental unit had been in operation for a few months during the year . 1922. At present the plant is the largest producer of cadmium, not only in the United States but in the world. Electrolytic cadmium is characterized by its very low content of impurities. The main impurities, which are lead, copper, zinc, and iron, do not aggregate more than 0.05 per cent., leaving a cadmium content better than 99.95 per cent. The consumption of cadmium has increased rapidly since the war, with the growing use in the plating industry. Cadmium plating has come into prominence because of its connection with the automobile and radio industries. As a protective coating, a deposit of, cadmium is superior to zinc. Cadmium is also used extensively in alloys. Important among these is the alloy with copper used in telephone and trolley wire. In proportion of 0.5 to 1.2 per cent., cadmium adds materially to the strength and wearing qualities. Practically all commercial zinc concentrates contain a small amount of cadmium. In the electrolytic zinc process, the cadmium that is dissolved in the regular leaching operation is removed from solution with metallic zinc, generally added in the form of zinc dust. This precipitate also contains the copper taken into solution and the excess of zinc dust, which is required in order to insure a complete removal of all impurities. The precipitate is treated by a separate process to recover the copper, cadmium and excess zinc. In order to make the metals more soluble and to render insoluble such impurities as iron, arsenic and antimony, the precipitate is roasted. The roasting is carried out in gas-fired McDougall furnaces, with a roasting temperature of about 700° C.

New techniques in the magnetite and heavy media beneficiation industries demand more efficient magnetic dispersion and flocculation of the finely ground particles. Demagnetizing coils must produce several major effects, such as improving classification and screening efficiency, decreasing moisture content in filter cake and improving separation selectivity and green pellet properties. Likewise, magnetic flocculators must increase filtering rates and the settling rates of solids, improve magnetite recovery and produce cleaner water. To improve the design of equipment and to conduct tests leading to the optimization of such dispersion and flocculation, a program was initiated at Eriez Magnetics. The major conclusions reached are: 1. Laboratory and plant scale tests conducted on magnetite products show that a demagnetizing force of 450 rms oersteds at 60 cycles for 1/20- second duration will depolarize natural magnetite particles coarser than approximately 10 microns. This has been found satisfactory for most applications. 2. Effective flocculation of magnetite was obtained when a slurry with more than one percent magnetite was exposed for a period of approximately 1/15 second to a 600-gauss field. 3. The cost of demagnetizers (or flocculators) increases rapidly for larger diameter pipes. In order to reduce the cost, narrow rectangular sections are recommended for magnetic flocculators. 4. For minimum operating cost, permanent magnetic flocculators are ideal, chiefly because they do not require any maintenance and have no operating cost. 5. A newly designed electro-demagnetizing coil with high heat dissipation and a nonmetallic core provides high efficiency and long life. 6. To select the correct magnetic flocculator (or demagnetizing coil) the following information is necessary: a. Magnetic product susceptibility b. Magnetic product coercive force c. Percent of magnetic product d. Flow rate e. Viscosity f. Structure of magnetic product

IN the utilization of natural resources owner, operator, and consumer should share the attendant benefits. Development needs to be planned under terms recognizing fully the interests of all concerned, for any undue advantage given to any one of these participants is apt to involve even greater and disproportionate injury to one or both of the others. For this reason it is well to preface any consideration of needed reforms in legislation affecting the disposition of public land with a survey of certain fundamental principles that determine the general conditions of all land transfers preliminary to development, utilization, and production. The disposition of any undeveloped natural resource, whether timber, oil, coal, or water power, as a transaction to which hand owner and prospective developer are parties, must be based in theory upon a division of expected returns. Whatever the terms of such disposition, neither party can reasonably ask for anything other than an equitable division of the returns. Under this analysis three and only three questions need to be discussed ; namely, what are those profits, how is this division to be accomplished, and what is the equitable basis of division ? The answer to the third question should probably be found by applying to the problem the principles of theoretical sociology, and' the question need not be mentioned further at this time, inasmuch as it does not involve the practical considerations to be kept in mind in connection with the other questions, which are concerned with only the measure of returns and their division. That is to say, whether the land owner's equity is to be stated as 95 per cent. or as 5 per cent. of the profits attending the development of the particular resource, no change would be necessary in the method to be adopted of arriving at the closest approximation of the prospective total profit.

In order to determine copper resource data and production costs for major market economy mines and deposits, the Bureau of Mines has performed detailed engineering and economic analyses on 271 of the world's most significant copper deposits. At the demonstrated resource level, copper potentially recoverable from these deposits is estimated to be 325 million metric tons, 180 million tons of which would be from Pacific Rim countries. Chile has the largest known copper resources of any country and accounts for nearly 45 percent of the copper avail- able from Pacific Rim countries. At $1.00 per pound, in January 1981 dollars, an estimated 80 million metric tons of copper are potentially economically recoverable from Pacific Rim deposits. At this same price, analyses indicate that these deposits could economically produce about 2 million metric tons of copper per year. Sensitivity analyses reveal that if operating costs were to decrease 25 percent, with copper at a price of $1.00 per pound, total copper economically recoverable from Pacific Rim countries could increase by about 10 percent; a 25 percent increase in operating costs could lower economically recoverable copper by 50 percent. Analyses also indicate that byproduct prices are important. If byproduct revenues increased 25 percent, at a copper price of $1.00 per pound, an additional 2 million metric tons of copper could be recovered; if byproduct revenues decrease 25 percent, about 5 million metric tons less of copper metal would be available. Since the January 1981 date of this study, inflation and decreases in copper and byproduct prices have greatly affected the profitability of the world copper industry. Many producing mines have curtailed or suspended production, and development of many non- producing deposits has been postponed.

THE outstanding characteristic of the last hundred years has been the world-wide rise in the standard of living. Man's dominion over nature is increasing with an accelerating pace and more and more the forces and materials of this world are being made to serve man's necessities and his convenience. We demand both quantities and varieties of goods that were beyond the dreams, to say nothing of the reach, of our fore-fathers, and our possession of them has become so much a matter of course that they excite no remark. Literally, thousands of young folks have required an explanation of a recent popular song, "Thanks for the Buggy Ride," for the reason that their own experience does not extend back into the pre-flivver age. This transition from the use of vehicles made mainly of wood and drawn by animal power, to metal made cars propelled by mineral fuels is all but complete and the memory even of older conditions is already fading. This is symbolic of what is happening all around us. In a recent book, Dr. Frank J. Goodenough, president of Johns Hopkins University, referred to Chinese civilization as a ?vegetable" civilization meaning thereby that the Chinese depend mainly upon the plant world for food, clothing and other necessities and luxuries. Our own people did the same hardly more than a hundred years ago. In 1820, this country produced and used only 5 lb. of pig iron per capita, but a quick and enormous change was wrought in the hundred, years that followed, and in 1920 the amount was 119 times as much, or 597 lb. It has since increased even beyond this and touched a peak of 809 lb. in 1923. In that year our output was more than twice that of 1903 and nine times that of 1883. This increase in production

Four, general methods have been used in the study of the decomposition of coal. The first has been directed toward the processes of coal formation, the second has been by means of microscopic studies, the third from the data of destructive distillation, and the fourth has made use of various solvents. Applying these methods to the sulfur of coal, it has been found that the organic sulfur of plant and animal life enters into the formation of coal and remains in organic combination in the final product. The inorganic sulfur is almost entirely combined as iron pyrites and marcasite. The infiltration of hydrogen-sulfide waters is doubtless a large factor in these combinations. Sulfates are found in very small quantities except where free oxygen has entered the coal strata. The mechanical mixing of detritus with the early coal material is another source of sulfur. In this case the sulfur is distributed in microscopic particles throughout the mass. In destructive distillation, a part off the sulfur comes off as hydrogen sulfide and various thiophen compounds, but this furnishes little information as to the nature of the sulfur compounds in the coal itself. The use of solvents has given valuable data concerning the sulfur compounds in coal. Fremy1 and later E. Guignet2 noted the action of alkaline solutions on coal after treatment with nitric acid and Anderson and Roberts3 showed' the presence of large quantities of organic' sulfur in the extract so obtained. In a study of the phenol extract of coal, Parr and Hadley4 found organic sulfur in the soluble organic material. These investigations proved the presence of organic sulfur in coal in addition to the inorganic forms, such as iron pyrites and sulfates. T. M. Drown5

Results of preliminary research on the use of small diameter water jets at high pressure for cutting rocks has demonstrated the possibility of effective cutting of anthracite. Detailed research has, therefore, been conducted at the Skotchinsky Institute of Mining to study the dynamics and structure of the small water jets and the mechanism by which they cut coal. One of the objects of this research was to obtain data for the design of a machine for cutting rock, based on the same principles as that for cutting coal. The productivity of water jet mining machines depends on the hydro- dynamic parameters of the jet. Therefore, the research on small diameter water jets was directed, initially to a study of the nature of the variation of these parameters, and to obtain a profile of dynamic pressure distribution over the section of the jet. As has been confirmed previously, the required jet pressure (to cut coal) lies in the range of 100 to 500 atmospheres. These pressures were utilized for the research. The diameter of the nozzle was changed as ~follows; 0.97; 1.24; 1.5; 2.17; 2.87; and 3.57 mm. Graphs showing dynamic pressures for each nozzle diameter and varied axial dynamic pressure were obtained over distances ranging from 2 to 70 cm from the nozzle. One of the most important hydrodynamic parameters of a jet, closely related to the dynamics of jet disturbance in air, is the magnitude of the axial dynhmic pressure. A study of the variation in this pressure with increasing distance from the nozzle led to the separation of the jet into three specific parts, which differ from each other not only in the nature of the change in dynamic pressure, but also in structural properties.

In June, 1911, the writer spent a few days in studying the economic geology of the vicinity of Park City. During this rather hurried visit a number of specimens of ore were collected, which have since been examind. The results of these investigations show that bournonite (PbCu-SbSa) is present in the ores in greater or less quantity. This fact has never before been reported, as far as can be learned. The failure to recognize this mineral is due to its similarity to tetrahedrite, with which it has probably been confused during a long period of years. Jamesonite (Pb2sb2s6) has been reported from the region in a rather doubtful manner, but the writer has seen it in notable amounts from several mines, and can offer the first analysis of this mineral from the district. Calamine (HzZn2SiO5) was found at one mine and has never been ecognized and reported from the district. Geogbaphy and Geology Park City, Utah, is located at an elevation of about 7,000 ft. above sea level on the eastern slope of the Wasatch mountains. It is situated approximately 25 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. ' The geology and ore deposits have been described in detail by Bout well and Woolsey.' The mines visited are situated south-southeast from the town. The Silver King Coalition mine is located in Woodside gulch about 1 mile southeast of Park City, at an altitude of about 8,100 ft. The other mines visited were the Daly West and Quincy, which are in Empire canyon about 2 miles sontheast of the town, at elevations of 8,300 to 8,500 ft. respectively. The Daly Judge tunnel goes into the mountain from Empire canyon about 1 mile south of the city, at an altitude of 7,700ft.

One of the more widespread experimental procedures currently used in experimental rock and soil mechanics work involves the use of a short circular cylinder loaded axially between nonrigid end plates1-5 (Fig. 1a and b). It is widely recognized 6 that a number of undesirable features are connected with this test procedure ; the most noteworthy of these is the development of a nonuniform stress distribution throughout the specimen resulting from an elastic mismatch between the specimen and the end plates. In general, the end plates and specimen possess different elastic properties. As a result of this elastic mismatch, the uniform distribution of stress and strain applied to the end plates is altered at the interface, the degree of which is dependent not only on the magnitude of the elastic mismatch but also on whether there is any relative movement between the specimen and the end plate. A convenient measure of the elastic mismatch is the ratio (vp/Ep) / (v8/E3), where v and E are Poisson's ratio and Young's modulus and the subscripts s and p refer to the specimen and end plate, respectively. For most tests that use steel end plates, (v8/E8) is greater than (vp/Ep) ; i.e., the specimen tends to expand or contract laterally more than the end plates. Because of the frictional restraint offered by the end plates, shearing stresses are developed at the interface that, for compression testing, act inward producing a "clamping" effect (Fig. lc). The effect of this "clamping" is to produce a state of triaxial stress throughout the specimen. Fig. Id illustrates the coordinate system and stress nomenclature used. Morrow Point Dam and Power Plant are principal features of the Bureau of Reclamation's Curecanti Unit of the Colorado River Storage Project. They are under construction on the Gunnison River 20 miles east of Montrose, Colo. Johnson-MK is the prime contractor, and represents a joint venture of Al Johnson Construction Co., Minneapolis, Minn., and Morrison-Knudsen Co., Inc., Boise, Idaho. The power plant will be housed in an underground chamber in the left abutment, approximately 250 ft behind the original canyon wall. The chamber is 206 ft long and 57 ft wide. The distance from the foundation to the spring line of the roof arch varies from 51 ft in the service bay to 120 ft in the control bay. The roof arch has a rise of 16 ft. The longitudinal center line of the chamber is orientated east-west with the draft tubes discharging nearly due north. Access to the power plant chamber was possible through the cable tunnel, access tunnel, two draft tube tunnels, two penstock tunnels, exploratory tunnel, which became the ventilation tunnel, or the grouting and drainage tunnel leading to the dam. (See Fig. 1.) The shortest and fastest access was through the cable and access tunnels, and the contractor drove these two tunnels simultaneously. The cable tunnel and cable gallery excavation exposed a transverse section, at the west end of the chamber, that was 15 ft wide and extended from the crown to 5 ft below spring line. It was here that arch excavation began. The first 34 ft of advance along the arch was driven on three headings, and the muck was removed through the cable tunnel. Meanwhile, the access tunnel was completed, and a raise was driven from its crown to intersect the advancing arch excavation near the longitudinal centerline

THE mining .district is located in the northeasterly part of Nevada, between the Jarbidge River on the west and the East Fork of the Jarbidge on the east. The northern boundary of the district is but a few miles south of the Idaho state line-the gold-bearing area extending from this point south, for 5 or 6 miles. The Jarbidge Mountains, in which the ore deposits occur, range from 5000 to 11,000 ft. in elevation, the most important mines being situated about 7000 ft. or higher. The town of Jarbidge lies along the Jarbidge River and is reached by stage from Rogerson, Ida., the nearest railroad point. During the summer months, the camp may be entered from the south by way of Deeth, Nev., but no regular transportation facilities are available over this route. HISTORY The mineral deposits were not discovered until 1909, when D. A. Bourne, panning along the river bank, found gold in the gravel at the mouth of a small stream flowing into the Jarbidge. He prospected in the vicinity of this stream, later known as Bourne Gulch, and shortly after located the North Star claims. During the following spring and summer (1910), the camp of Jarbidge grew from nothing to a town of 2000 people and the hills surrounding it were practically all taken up by mining claims. Most of the work done during. the first year or two consisted of trenching and open-cut prospecting. Tunneling was started on a number of claims and many veins were uncovered. Mills were built and operated on a few properties, notably the Pavlak and the North Star. These ran only a few months, however, when they were closed down because of extraction and financial difficulties.
