The strain rate dependence of the flow stress of the eutectoid Zn-Al alloy has been determined as a function of mechanical processing, microstructure, and temperature. The best superplastic properties result from the ultrafine, equiaxed structure produced by solution treatment and isothermal transformation at 0°C. Lamellar structures produced by isothermal transformation and coarse equiaxed structures produced by annealing also exhibit strain rate sensitivity in excess of 0.5, but at higher stresses and lower strain rates than the finest structure. Solution treatment and isothermal transformation eliminate the effect of prior processing history. Small composition variations in the binary alloy do not influence the mechanical properties. Below the eutectoid transformation temperature (.275C) increasing temperature lowers the flow stress at all strain rates. The data do not favor any of the present proposals for the mechanism of superplastic flow. ALLOYS of zinc and aluminum, near the eutectoid composition, have been investigated for: 1) the flow stress-strain rate and elongation behavior,1, 2) the transformation kinetics,3 and 3) structure,3"5 but the structure sensitivity of the mechanical properties is poorly understood. Using a near eutectoid alloy water-quenched from 380°C, Backofen et aL2 estab- high and increases with increasing strain rate. They found a correlation between strain rate sensitivity and tensile elongation as expected from the increased resistance to necking that a high strain rate sensitivity provides.296 The large elongation at high strain rates is attractive for metal forming. Since most other superplastic alloys7-l3 do not show high strain rate sensitivity at such a high strain rate (for the exception see Ref. 12) there is the possibility of a unique deformation mechanism for this alloy. The sensitivity of the mechanical properties of the eutectoid alloy to thermal history1 suggests a structure sensitivity that has not been demonstrated. Gar-wood and Hopkins3 identified a lamellar product for material transformed between 200" and 260°C. The size of the lamellae decreased with decreasing temperature. They also demonstrated that an unresolved transformation product formed below 200°C. A granular two-phase material was resolved for specimens quenched to below 150°C by Mitbauer and sauerwald4 who observed coarsening of the structure after annealing. The role of grain boundaries in superplastic deformation is suggested by the strong effect of grain refinement in encouraging this phenomenon at high strain rateS7-11, 13 and is emphasized in several proposals about rnechanism7, 8, 12 and in a theory14 of high-temperature deformation. The question of the nature and prevention of intergranular corrosion in austenitic stainless steels has been ably discussed by Bain and co-workers1-3 and by other investigator4-10 The present methods of study subject samples to corrosive conditions in such reagents as the Strauss solution, a mixture of copper sulphate and sulphuric acid. Such tests usually require at least 72 hr. to run. Various methods of measuring the degree of sensitization have been employed, such as the measurement of electrical resistivity, magnetic measuremerits, measurement of the degree of cracking produced on bending over a malldrel, and microscopic studies. The detection of carbides at the grain boundaries by metallographic polishing and etching methods is tedious and requires a skilled operator. A recent report on such methods of carbide detection is given by the American Society for Testing Materials Subcommittee VI of Committee A.-1011 and by Arness.12 The present investigation was undertaken to develop a simple test procedure for detecting carbide precipitation or susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. The test is designed for use in the plant and for the testing of fabricated structures. Carbide precipitation, the factor leading to susceptibility to corrosion, is produced by heating the alloy in the temperature range 800° to 1600°F., as in welding, in improper annealing or in service where such temperatures are met. The connection between such precipitation and susceptibility to corrosion has been thoroughly discussed, as has been the use of stabilizing addition elements to prevent precipitation. Experimental Method A small area of the steel under test is subjected to an anodic treatment in a cell that can be 'lamped Onto a a Or an actual structure. The cell and electrical circuit used are illustrated in Fig. I. The cell C is lead, joined to the steel plate D and insulated from it by a short piece of rubber tubing E. The cell is forced tightly against the steel plate by a spring Or clamping device. The seal formed by the rubber against the steel plate is sufficient to retain the liquid bath inside the cell. The spot treated can be made any shape desired, depending on the shape of the rubber gasket. The cell illustrated polishes a circular spot about 3/8- diameter' The bath consists of 60 per cent (by weight) sulphuric acid to which is added 5 ml. per liter of Glycyrrhiza extract (U.S.P.). The cell requires about 2 to 2.5

The south border of Espirito Santo begins about 400 km. north of Rio de Janeiro and extends along the Atlantic Coast northward some 325 km. and inland 100 to 150 km. The area under consideration, where quartz crystal of strategic grades has been mined, extends from 19º to 21º and 30º south latitude; and from 40º to 41º and 30º west longitude. This includes the central part of Espirito santo, chiefly south of the Rio Doce from the Atlantic ocean, and west across the border into Minas Gerais near the town of Aimores, in the municipalities of Aimores, Minas Gerais; Baixo Guandu, Santa Teresa, Santa Leopoldina, Colatina, Joao Neiva, Fundao and Domingo Mar-tines, Espirito Santo (Fig. I). During 1943 and the first half of 1944, this region accounted for approximately 3 to 5 per cent of the quartz crystal produced in Brazil. Shipments of crystal have been made chiefly by rail to Rio de Janeiro. This region is serviced by the E. F. Minas-Vitoria and E. F. Leopoldina to Rio de Janeiro through vitoria; and by the E. F. Minas-Vitoria and E. F. Centra] do Brasil through Bello Horizonte, Minas Gerais to Rio de Janeiro. The major deposits are accessible from the railheads by dirt roads, some being 5 to 30 km. off the road, reached by trail. In 1943 and the first half of 1944, the bulk of the production was from inter- mountain marshes and adjoining hillside alluvial placer deposits in the zone surrounding the town of Santa Teresa. Most of these deposits were formed from the erosion of pegmatite~, quartz veins and pockets in the gneiss, with minor quantities produced from miarolitic cavity fillings in the granitic rock. Early Operations Mining of quartz crystal in this region began in 1928 and has been stimulated by the market demand for military uses. Before 1936 little attention was given to it, either in Espirito Santo or eastern Minas Gerais. From 1936 to 1941 the Japanese sent agents to various points of production or potential production to acquire quartz through purchase. They bought crysta1 as small as 10 grams. Since '94' only the United States and Great Britain have received quartz from Brazil. The United States purchases crystals of 100 grams and larger for strategic purposes. The first known discoveries were made either in the municipalities of Aimores, Minas Gerais, or in Baixo Guandu, 01 Domingos Martines, Espirito Santo. Marketable quartz crysta1 was first found either in the massive quartz replacement veins of the Victor Hugo mine in the municipality of Domingo Martines, or in the large 'ores of quartz in the pegmatites near Baixo Guandu, extending into Minas Gerais. EARLIER the authors and coworkers had pre sented data on isothermal temper embrittlement of an SAE 3140 steel?' In that work, however, attention was concentrated on embrittlement at 575°C and below. Preliminary measurements showed that embrittlement at 675 °C was much mote rapid than would be expected from the data at the lower temperatures: and indicated the need for further work above 575°C. The possibility of an upper nose in the time-temperature embrittlement diagram above 575°C was pointed out. Procedure The same heat of SAE 3140 steel was used as in the previous work, and experimental methods were the same. All blanks were austenitized 1 hr at 900°C and water, quenched. Groups were then tempered 1 hr at 675"C, water quenched, and given embrittling treatments for times of 5 min to 240 hr at 675" to 600 °C, as shown in Table I. Other groups, after the temper and quench, were embrittled 48 to 1440 hr at 550°C. Another series was tempered 240 hr at 675"C, quenched, and held for various times at 650" to 375°C (Table 11). For comparison, a series was tempered for these same times at 700°, 675", and 650°C (Table 111). The Ae, temperature for this heat of steel had been determined as approximately 690°C;1*a the treatments at 700°C were introduced to determine the effects of tempering in a range where a little austenite would fonn. A large number of other treatments, involving holding at two temperatures in succession after the temper, and occasionally slow cooling or heating, were also studied. These treatments are listed in the tables. Austenitizing was done in air; all subsequent treatments were in salt. Blanks were always water quenched after the last treatment. The heat-treated blanks were machined to standard V-notch Charpy specimens. A transition curve for each group was obtained by breaking the specimens at various temperatures on a 217 ft-lb impact machine having a striking velocity of 16.8 fps, and plotting the observed percentage of fibrous fracture vs the test temperature. From this plot, the transition temperature was taken as the lowest temperature at which the fracture appeared 100 pct fibrous; its accuracy is estimated as +5"C. Generally, hardness was measured on every bar. Since a decrease in hardness itself seems to decrease the transition temperature somewhat, a correctiona of —0.28"C per Bhn was applied to permit comparison of the transition temperatures on a uniform basis of 24 Rc. The transition temperature and hardness results are given in Tables I through VI. Where overlap of earlier work1.' occurred, data were combined.

THE slate industry of the United States has shown a marked decline in value of products made annually since the peak year 1925, although there has been moderate improvement over the lean years 1932 to 1934. In 1940, the value of all slate products sold was approximately 5 ¾ million dollars for a total output of 473,450 short tons. The quantity sold was a little less and the value a great deal lower than the annual averages for the past two decades. Enormous quantities of waste materials result from the quarrying, splitting and milling of slate. Obviously, utilization of such waste material is desirable, not only from the viewpoint of economical operation but also for the purpose of conserving natural resources. One possible use is to produce expanded or puffed lightweight aggregate for use in concretes. Such concretes are strong enough for specific uses, and the advantage of lightness could be obtained in such structures as the walls and roofs of buildings, suspension-bridge roadways and various other applications where weight is a factor. Conceivably, these uses could consume an appreciable annual tonnage. USE OF WASTE SLATES FOR MAKING AGGREGATES The lightweight-aggregate industry has been discussed elsewhere4.5 and need not be covered in detail in this paper. The materials commonly utilized are naturally occurring aggregates such as volcanic cinder, tuff and pumice; by-product materials, such as ordinary cinders and air-cooled slags; and the specially manufactured products, including Haydite, Pottsco, Gravelite, Cel-seal, Superock and Waylite. Slates, however, have not been given the consideration they merit, especially in the United States. In the British Isles, some work has been done3 on certain Welsh slates by the Building Research Station to stimulate the use of these wastes. REQUIREMENTS FOR RAW MATERIALS As pointed out by Hughes,4 the light-weight-aggregate industry is segregated in regions adjacent to large cities in order to localize the market and avoid the necessity of long freight haulage. Waste slate from the deposits of eastern Pennsylvania, northern Maryland, and Virginia would meet the basic requirement of any low-priced structural raw material. One apparent advantage is attained when slate waste, normally discarded, is utilized in the manufacture of a by-product. Mining or quarrying costs usually have been assessed against the main product. Some additional grinding might be desirable, but this operation would be relatively cheap, as most slates grind easily. It is believed that virtually all slates, when properly heated, will expand to some degree. However, types that will expand from 3 to 7 times their original volume are preferred. The relation between the properties of electric logs and the fluid used in drilling a well is briefly discussed in this paper, and the fact that the resistivity of the drilling mud and its filtrate can appreciably affect such logs is shown. Apparatus was designed and a procedure established to determine the effect of various factors on the resistivity of drilling mud. Five muds commonly employed in California were tested and the following observations were made: I. The effect of raising the temperature from 80°F. to 180°F. is to decrease the resis-tiviiy of the mud or filtrate approximately 50 per cent. 2. The resistivity of the mud in most cases closely approximates that of its filtrate. 3, The change in the resistivities of muds caused by the addition of chemical is not the same function of the amount of chemical added for each mud. 4. The effect produced by increased sodium chloride content is to reduce markedly the resistivity of the mud and its filtrate. 5. Weighting materials, such as Baroid and limestone, tend to increase the resistivity of drilling mud. 6, Cement and counteracting reagents reduce mud resistivity. Introduction During recent years, the practice of "electrically logging9' a geologic formation by means of a system of electrodes lowered in a well bore has provided data of inestimable value concerning the nature of the sediments penetrated. Thus, it is generally possible, by means of electric logs, to distinguish readily the differences between shales, sandstones, cherts, limestones, and other rock forms. The distinguishing characteristics recorded in this manner have made possible long-range and closely detailed mapping and visualization of deeply buried structures1-5 to a degree not to be obtained with a reasonable expenditure of money by any other means at present in use. Besides being of value in correlation work, electric logs have been found, in some instances, to be useful in estimating the nature of fluid contained within the pores of a rock. In special cases, even the relative permeabilities at different horizons have been determined.6 That electric logs should reflect in some measure such physical properties of rocks as porosity and permeability and, in addition, give rise to data pertaining to the fluid content of rock interstices, becomes evident when the conditions giving rise to the electrical phenomena measured are known. However, it is not the purpose of this paper to review the present status of electric logging; rather, the reader is referred to the papers cited on page 220 for the principles and practice involved. INTRODUCTION MOST of the electron diffraction studies of oxide films which form on metals and alloys have been carried out by oxidizing the specimens in an auxiliary furnace, cooling down to room temperature and then inserting the sample in the camera and taking a diffraction photograph. Prior to the investigations at the Westinghouse Research Laboratories, no systematic study of the oxidation of any metal or alloy had been made over a wide temperature range with photographs taken at elevated temperatures except the investigation of iron by Jackson and Quarrell.1 In order to interpret the electron diffraction patterns of the oxides which may form on alloys, it seemed advisable to make a comprehensive study of the oxidation of the purest metals available in the bulk form. Thus far studies have been completed on iron,2 cobalt,2 nickel,2 chromium ,2 Copper2, tungsten,3 molybdenum,3 beryllium ,4 uranium,4 thorium4 titanium5 and zirconium5 while investigations are in progress on tantalum and columbium, The next step in the study is concerned with the investigation of the oxides which form on binary alloys. Some of the alloys consist of a single, phase while others contain more than one phase. The identification of the oxides on the surface of a binary alloy may be more difficult than on the metals since oxides containing both metals as well as those of each metal separately may form. Furthermore, it is possible that solid solutions of the various oxides may occur. In these cases the electron diffraction method may not be able to identify the oxidation products unequivocally, Examples of solid solutions which may present difficulties are MoO2 and W02, Fe3O4 and FeO-Cr2O3 since the diffraction patterns are so similar. Since electron diffraction can determine only the structure of the oxide, the chemical composition must be inferred from the diffraction data based upon X ray diffraction investigations of specimens of known composition. It is possible in some cases to decide whether a given solid phase reaction can occur on the surface of an alloy by a study of available thermodynamic data. Table I lists the equations for the formation of most of the oxides from the elements together with values of log10 KR for the several temperatures. There are many studies of flow in radial systems that can be used to interpret unsteady rerervoir flow problems. Although solutions for systems of infinite extent can be used to generate solutions fur finite ow systems by superposition, application is tedious. In this paper a step is made toward simplifying calcu1ations of such solutions for finite flow systems. Superposition is used to produce a tabulu-lion of the dimension1e.s.s pressure drop function at several locations within a bounded square that has a well at its center. The square system provides a useful building block that may be used to generate flow behavior for any rectangular shape whose sides are in integral ratios. Values of the tabulated dimensionless pressure drop function are simply added to obtain the dimensionless pressure drop function for the desired rectangulm system. The rectangular system may contain any number of wells producing at any rates. Furthermore, the outer boundaries of the rectangular system may be closed (no-flow) or they may he at constant pressure. Mixed conditions also may be conyidered. Tables of the dimensionless pressure drop function for the square system are presented and various applications of the technique are illustrated. Introduction In 1945, van Everdingen and Hurst' published solutions for the problem of water influx into a cylindrical reservoir. Since this problem is mathematically identical with the depletion of a cylindrical reservoir with a well at the origin, the van Everdingen-Hurst solution may be used to study the depletion problem. In their analysis, they assumed that the fluid had a small, constant compressibility such that flow was governed by the diffusivity equation For a constant production rate q starting at time zero, van Everdingen and Hurst showed that the unsteady pressurc distribution for both finite and infinite systems could be expressed in terms of a dimensionless pressure 'Sabulations of the dimensionless pressure drop for a unit value of r, were provided by van Everdingen and Hurst,' and later by Chatas.' Others also presented values in graphical or tabular form." If the radius of the well becomes vanishingly small, r,+ O, the line source solution may be used for Eq. 2 when infinite systems are considered. Eqs. 5 and 6 are excellent approximations for Eq. 2 under certain conditions: In 1954, Matthews, Brons and HazebroekV emonstrated that solutions such as Eq. 5 can be superposed to generate the behavior of bounded geometric shapes; i.e., the behavior of a bounded single-well system can be calculated by adding together the pressure disturbances caused by the appropriate array of an infinite number of wells producing from an infinite system. The study of the influence of fluid mobilities on the sweepout pattern resulting from the injection of gas or water has been extended to cover the production period which follows breakthrough of the injected material. Mobility ratios over the range common in field operations (0.1 to 17) were studied for several pattern floods (five-spot, staggered, and direct line drive). The experimental data required for these studies were obtained by the use of the x-ray shadowgraph technique using miscible oil phases of different viscosities in porous plate mode1s of a reservoir element. From the shadowgraph pictures obtained before and after breakthrough of the injected fluid, flowing ratios at the producing well and cumulative volumes injected were calculated. The method for applying such data in predicting field behavior is illustrated for a water flood of a five-spot. For this case a range of mobility ratios of 0.5 to 5.0 results in: (I) nearly complete (95 to 100 per cent) sweepout pattern efficiencies at abandonment conditions, (2) production after breakthrough being responsible for as much as one-third of the total recovery at the lower mobility ratios, and (3) a twofold variation in the operating life of the reservoir. In determining the merits of a secondary recovery operation, the fraction of the reservoir which is ultimately to be swept by the injected fluid is of major importance. Because of its significance a large amount of research has been applied to the study of areal sweepout efficiency. Muskat, Wyckoff and Botset1,2 have presented the classic analysis of the pattern efficiency at breakthrough for several injection patterns in which the mobility of the fluids ahead of the injected phase front was equal to the mobility of the fluids behind the front. Aronofsky3 as extended this analysis of recovery at breakthrough through numerical computations and by the stepwise use of the potentiometric model to include the effect of different fluid mobilities ahead of and behind the invasion front on the line drive performance. Fay and Prats' have also employed numerical computations to show the influence of one other condition of fluid mobilities on the five spot flood. In a previous paper' a new method of attack on this problem which employed x-ray and porous plates was described. At that time experimental results were also presented which described the effect of fluid mobilities on the reservoir area contacted by the injected fluid at breakthrough for the five spot and direct line drive patterns. Most of the literature pertaining to sweepout pattern efficiency has emphasized the pattern which is obtained at breakthrough of the injected phase. INTRODUCTION THE reaction of carbon in solid solution in a metal with the surface oxide film on many metals may be inferred from thermodynamic calculations for high vacua and high temperature conditions. Holm1 has recently shown that oxide films may be removed from ferrous materials by heating in a vacuum at high temperatures and that carbon is the essential element in the reaction. Considerable work has been described in the literature on the decarburization reaction. Several general references may be noted.2,3,4 However, the nature of the mechanism involved in the decarburization is not well understood. Our interest in this reaction resulted from many attempts to degas and to reduce by pure and dry hydrogen the surface oxides 0n strips of various types of chrome-nickel alloys. Some of the early experiments on the behavior of 13 pct chrome-iron in vacua of the order of 5 X 106 mm and at a temperature of 600°C have been reported.5 These experiments showed a slow reaction with the residual oxygen or water vapor in the system and no reaction with hydrogen. This is in accord with thermodynamic data which would lead to the prediction that it is extremely difficult to maintain a hydrogen atmosphere at 600°C pure enough to reduce Cr203 formed on the surface. The crystal structure of the superficial oxide film formed on 13 pct chrome iron and Nichrome V has been investigated in the thin film range by Gulbransen, Phelps and Hickman,6 and shown to be Cr203. It was surprising to us to note that when a specimen of Nichrome V containing approximately 80 pct nickel and 20 pct chromium was heated to 850°C in a high vacuum, the specimen' lost weight. The rate of weight loss was very temperature sensitive. A study of this reaction in vacua and in a hydrogen atmosphere is the subject of this communication. TYPE REACTIONS Let us consider the various reactions which may occur when a metal is heated in vacua, in a hydrogen atmosphere, or in an oxygen atmosphere. The number and kind of reactions will depend upon the chemical nature, of the metal, its alloying constituents and the location of the alloying constituents. The metals used in this study are chrome-nickel alloys of the heater type. They consist essentially of chromium, nickel and iron, small amounts of carbon, silicon and manganese and traces of zirconium, calcium, aluminum and magnesium. The trace elements are added to improve the lifetime and other characteristics of the alloy when used as a heater. THE nature of the decomposition reactions producing hardening in aluminum-rich A1-Ag alloys is now fairly well understood. The silver is not uniformly dispersed even at temperatures above the solvus line: rather, it is clustered into zones and associated with dislocations.' During quenching, nearly all of the silver segregates into zones' and some is attracted to dislocations, producing stacking faults. Growth of these faults produces the semicoherent y precipitate.1 During aging, the larger zones and the y precipitates grow at the expense of the smaller zones. The large zones persist up to about 350°C; where they redissolve in favor of the y' and y precipitates.' The equilibrium hcp y precipitate occurs both by a cellular reaction at the grain boundaries1 and by growth of the Y' plates to a critical size where incoherency results. Damask and Nowick 4 observed an internal friction peak in an A1-6 at. pct Ag alloy at about 140°C (0.25 cps). The peak was found to exhibit a systematic instability. After aging at successively higher temperatures between 155' and 23Z°C, the peak first migrated to higher temperatures while increasing in height, then returned to lower temperatures and decreased in height. After aging at temperatures above about 200°C, the peak position remained constant while the height decreased very slowly. In quenched specimens, elastic after-effect measurements inhcated a rapid initial transient in peak position from low temperatures up to 155°C. The authors concluded that a stress induced growth and resolution of the clusters and the 7' was the most reasonable mechanism to account for the behavior. It would seem, however, very unlikely that both the clusters and the y' precipitate would provide damping contributions whose relaxation time and activation energies were identical, which is required for them to produce the same internal friction peak. The present investigation was motivated by this apparent anomaly and the development of a very low thermal inertia torsion pendulum5 capable of monitoring transient behavior. Low frequency internal friction measurements were made on four binary A1-Ag alloys nominally containing 5, 10: 15, and 20 at. pct Ag. The results of measurements made on a 10 at. pct Ag alloy in the quenched condition are shown in Fig. 1. There are two peaks apparent in the spectrum, one centered at about 160°C, the second at about 210°C. The two peak spectrum was observed in each alloy, but it was best resolved in the 10 pct Ag specimens. Because of the instability in the internal friction, 4 it seemed possible that the second peak was not a peak at all, but simply a manifestation of a single, sharply transient, peak. The formation of grain boundary precipitates has been studied in Ag-5.64 wt pcl Al alloys at 688°C. Large-grain specinzerzs were used and the boundary misorientation measured by X-ray diffraction. At low-angle grain boundrrries Primary sideplates form. u)hile abore a 17-deg misorientation lenticular precipitates predominate. Growth of the lenticular precipitates was studied on individual grain boundaries using a statistical technique. The thickening and lengthening rates appeared to be independent of &apos;pain boundary misorientation, indicating that grain boundary diffusion was not significant in this system. The precipitates grew urith constant shape, with both the length and thickness increasing parabolically with time. The parabolic lengthening rates were unexpected since previous theory and experimerztal results had indicated linear growth. By approximating the shape of the precipitate to that of an oblate spheroid grouling with constant shape an equivalent diffusion coefficienl was calculated. The zlalue obtained was in good agreement with nleasurements obtained fron, diffusiorz couples. IF a single-phase alloy is heated or cooled to a temperature such that the phase becomes supersaturated, there is a tendency for a second phase to precipitate from it in order to remove the supersaturation. Precipitation takes place initially on grain boundaries due to preferred heterogeneous nucleation, but subsequently Widmans kitten plates may form in the grain interiors if the grain size and supersaturation are sufficient. The type of grain boundary precipitate formed depends on the nature of the boundary. Aaronson1 and clark2 have shown that grain boundary misorientation can be characterized by the simple parameter R, where and X, Y, and Z represent the minimum rotations about three orthogonal axes required to bring the two lattices forming the grain boundary into coincidence. The maximum value for R is 60 deg. In using this parameter the orientation of the grain boundary itself is, of course, neglected. However it was found in both Fe-si3 and A1-Ag2 that the precipitate shape depended only on the parameter R. Clark found that the vast majority of precipitates formed were allo-triomorphs— lens-shaped precipitates that grew along the grain boundaries. At low-angle boundaries, however, (R < 15 deg) Widmanstatten sideplates nucleated at the grain boundaries and grew into the adjacent grains. It has been reported that the rate of growth of grain boundary precipitates is controlled by diffusion within the supersaturated phase.&apos; The theories which have been developed for growth rates have assumed the diffusion coefficient constant over the composition range of the supersaturated phase. This is a fairly good approximation if the composition range involved is not large. Thickening rates have been calculated using the theory developed by Zener4 and by Frank5 for the growth of planar precipitates. A parabolic growth law

A modifiedl Czochralski technique has been utilized to grow single crystals of YVO, pure or doped with europium or neodymium, from 1 to 2 in. long and 4 to 1/2 in. in dianz. An oxyhydrog-en gas-fired furftace zuas used in this ulork, and melts were contained in iridium crucibles. Successful application of the Czochralski ~vzethod was found to depend upon atmosphere control to prevent crusting and to limit melt decomposition, the establishment of symmetrical thermal gradients in the melt to obtain stable growth, and the selection of high-quality single-crystal seeds to prevent propagation of misorientations during growth and subsequent catastrophic cracking. The suitability of YVO4 as a host for laser-active trivalent rare earth ions has long been recognized. However, the problems associated with the growth of sufficiently large, good-quality single crystals have, until quite recently, seriously hindered satisfactory evaluation of the laser potentialities of this material. Both flux growth and Czochralski growth techniques were investigated at an early stage of interest in YVO,. The former method proved incapable of yielding crystals large enough for practical use,ly2 and the latter was beset with difficulties which took some considerable time to understand and overcome. Recently, however, the Czochralski growth process for YVO, has been improved along separate but similar lines of development by groups working independently in the Crystal Products Department of Union Carbide&apos;s Electronics Division and Bell Telephone Laboratories3 so that now good-quality single crystals of satisfactory size can be produced on a routine basis. Stimulated emission from a neodymium-doped YVO4 crystal grown by the Crystal Products Department of Union Carbide was obtained by O&apos;connor4 of MIT, Lincoln Labs. An oxyhydrogen gas-fired furnace was used in this work, Fig. 1, and melts were contained in iridium crucibles. The starting material was 99.9 to 99.99 pct pure YVO4 powder purchased from the Chemical and Metallurgical Division of the Sylvania Electric Products Co. Typical impurity levels, determined by spectrographic analyses, were as follows: Si, 50 to 500 ppm Al, Fe, Mg, 5 to 50 ppm Ni, Pb, Mo, Mn, Ce, Cs, 1 to 10 ppm Initially, YV04 powders predoped with neodymium or europium were obtained from Sylvania. Later, however, because of a desire to grow a series of crystals containing relatively broad concentration ranges of these dopants, it proved more convenient to start with pure YV04 and mechanically admix Nd2O3 or Eu@~ powders plus equimolar amounts of V2O5. Zinc difhsions in gallium arsenide having surface concentrations as low as 5 x 10&apos;&apos; atoms per cu cm have been attained. A multiple-difhsion sequence is employed during which zinc enters the gallium arsenide from a silicon dioxide film in a solid-to-solid diffusion step. The technique is illustrated for the case of a zinc surface concentration of -1 x 1017 atoms per cu cm and a junction depth of 1.2 p. Radiotracer measurements of -0.1-p layers of gallium arsenide are used to delineate the resulting profile. A diffusion coefficient for zinc in pyrolytically deposited silicon dioxide is reported. ZINC is frequently used as an acceptor impurity in gallium arsenide. As examples, p-n junctions are formed using zinc-diffused layers in solar cells, lasers, and varactor diodes. For these purposes surface concentrations of 10&apos;&apos; to over loz0 zinc atoms per cu cm are desired and readily obtained from a vapor source. Diffusion of zinc into gallium arsenide to yield surface concentrations of about 1017 atoms per cu cm, however, is more difficult. For instance, oldstein&apos; reports that large changes in the vapor density of zinc produce only small changes in surface concentration. Such low surface concentrations are necessary in forming the diffused base of a gallium arsenide double-diffused n-p-n transistor in order to obtain an adequate emitter efficiency. An alternative approach to zinc diffusion which can provide reduction in surface concentration of several orders of magnitude is the introduction of the diffusant from a solid source. This can be conveniently accomplished by using oxide films of the type generally employed for selective diffusion masking. Such oxides also serve to prevent the dissociation of the gallium arsenide surface at the high temperatures of diffusion. DIFFUSION PROCEDURE Fig. 1 illustrates the diffusion sequence which is employed for obtaining zinc surface concentrations in the range from 5 x lom to 1 X 10" atoms per cu cm. The description of technique will be given for the instance of -1 x 1017, which is typically utilized in double-diffused gallium arsenide transistor investigations at this laboratory. Tin- or germanium-doped gallium arsenide wafers drawn from crystals grown by horizontal Bridgman or Czochralski techniques are used, with bulk concentrations ranging from 1 to 3 X 10" carrier atoms per cu cm. Each wafer is chemically polished on the (iii) arsenic face using a mixture of five parts concentrated sul-furic acid, one part water, and one part 30 pct hydrogen peroxide at room temperature, followed by rinsing in deionized and quartz-distilled water. Pyrolytic silicon dioxide was chosen as the oxide coating because of the high quality of the films obtainable, the ease of their preparation, and the excellent control over film thickness and uniformity.

THIS paper describes the application of amine flotation to a specific problem-that of increasing the grade of magnetite concentrates derived from an iron ore requiring extremely fine grinding for mineral liberation. Experiments conducted on an iron ore from Wisconsin had shown that concentrates containing 60 to 62 per cent iron and 12 to 14 per cent silica could be produced by magnetic separation. The residual silica occurred as quartz and hornblende, either entrained or locked with magnetite. Most advantageous utilization of the concentrate, however, necessitated that the silica content be reduced to about 5 per cent, equivalent to an iron content of 67.5 per cent. It had been demonstrated that tabling of the magnetic concentrate removed sufficient quartz and hornblende to yield an acceptable concentrate, but disadvantages inherent in tabling dictated that flotation be investigated as a substitute. The goals set for the flotation investigation were: (I) the production of concentrates of about 68 per cent iron content from the magnetic concentrate; (2) an iron recovery of about 85 per cent of that in the feed to flotation; and (3) minimum reagent cost. Both batch and continuous flotation tests were employed; the former, to establish the procedure and the latter to verify it. Although the data were obtained on a specific ore, and with a commercial application in view, it is believed that they have a bearing on other problems where amine flotation is being used or is anticipated. SAMPLES Two samples, designated "minus 100mesh magnetic concentrate" and "minus 150-mesh magnetic concentrate," were used for the batch experimental work. They differed only in the degree to which the crude ore was ground prior to magnetic separation. They were stored moist in steel drums in quantities sufficient for all the experimental work reported. This procedure had the advantage of allowing all tests to be made on common samples, but had the disadvantage that the individual flotation samples, because of the difference in storage time, were subject to various stages of surface alteration. Previous work had indicated that common samples were desirable for the batch studies, and it was decided that if these data appeared sufficiently promising the effect of surface alteration could be checked best by continuous tests. The size distributions and the assays of the samples are given in Table I. The minus 150-mesh magnetic concentrate, on which most of the flotation tests were made, assayed 60.9 per cent iron, 13.3 per cent silica, and 0.016 per cent phosphorus. The minus 325-mesh portion represented 78.1 per cent of the sample by weight, and assayed 67.9 per cent iron. Thus, the insoluble, mainly silica, was concentrated
