Endurance Properties of Non-ferrous Metals Discussion of the paper of D. J. McADAM, JR., presented at the Syracuse Meeting of the Institute of Metals Division and issued, as Paper No. 1506-E, with Mining AND METALLURGY, October, 1925. H. F. MOORE,* Urbana, Ill. (written discussion).-This paper says that the results of tests of some non-ferrous metals made at the University of Illinois and in the testing laboratories at McCook Field are abnormal when they do not agree with results obtained by the author. The writer can see no inherent reason why results of the type uniformly reported in this paper are any more normal. The knee of the stress-cycle, or S-N, diagram comes at different lengths of life for different metals. For steel, the knee occurs after from 1,000,000 to about 4,000,000 cycles, and for some non-ferrous metals not before 20,000,000 of 30,000,000 cycles. The writer can see nothing inherently abnormal in finding certain nonferrous metals for which the knee of the stress-cycle curve occurs at 1,000,000,000 cycles or higher. The writer has had experience with both the cantilever and the rotating-beam testing machine, and thinks that the chance of whipping action in the cantilever machine is a more serious handicap than the action the author has pictured. Furthermore, the writer questions whether the author has shown the existence of a clearly marked and definite endurance limit for all the non-ferrous metals he has tested including the following: Nickel (CT and A-16, Fig. 1), monel (CS-5.5 and BK, Fig. 2), bronze (F and CK, Fig. 4), aluminum bronze ( BJb-1, Fig. 6).

George W. Maynard, New York, N. Y.:—It is well known that there are many magnetite-mines of which the ore is too low-grade for direct use in the blast-furnace. For carrying out the sintering process, the preliminary step, in the case of magnetites, is the separation of the ore from the gangue by magnetic concentration. The resulting fine-grain product is very objectionable in the blast-furnace, and when used must be a very small percentage of the charge. The sintering process has saved the situation by furnishing a product which is absolutely ideal on account of its cellular structure. (In reply to questions by W. J. Tudor, and Joseph W. Richards, the following additional information was given by Dr. Maynard.) The percentage of iron in the product is determined entirely by the degree of concentration of the raw material and is practically not increased by the sintering operation. The magnetic concentrates at Port Henry and at the Benson and one or two other mines contain from 65 to 67 per cent. of metallic iron. The cost of sintering is from 39 to 41 cents per ton of product, including superintendence, depreciation, and repairs. The itemized figures are about as follows : Mixing (including labor), 24; power, 9; ignition, 5; repairs, 3; total, 41 cents. Prof. J. W. Richards, South Bethlehem, Pa.:—From a metallurgical standpoint I question the accuracy of the statement on p. 374: " C.—An increased reducibility of the iron so treated. (This has been conservatively estimated as 5 per cent. better than the best available ore.)" It seems to me that when a material is' sintered in this way, the constituents present, as lime, silica, and alumina, have a chance to form a compound with the iron oxide; that such a compound, if formed before the material goes into the blast-

A planar Gunn oscillator was developed for use in a monolithic microwave integrated circuit. The device was designed to operate in the frequency range of 20 to 30 GHz with a continuous wave output. Selective epitaxial deposition was used to form the n+n-n+ device structure in (111)-B semi-insuluting GaAs. The active n- region was about 5 µ thick and was doped to about 2 x 1015 electrons per cu cm by the reactor background. The mobility was -5000 sq cm v-1 sec-1. The n+ epitaxial deposits were doped to 1 x 10" electrons per cu cm using S2Cl2. Planarity of the three DURING the past few years, new microwave devices in discrete form have been developed utilizing GaAs. The next logical step is to combine these devices in a successive deposits was quite good; total overgrowth was less than 1 µ. Metal ohmic contacts were applied to the n+ or n- regions using a Ag-In-Ge alloy. The n+n-n+ devices had symmetric IV characteristics and could be operated C. W. for both directions of device bias. Metal ohmic contacts made directly to the n-region always Produced asymmetric devices. C. W. operation was obtained over the 22 to 28 GHz frequency range. The best performance obtained was 1.5 mw C. LV. output at 28 GHz. microwave integrated circuit. A potential application would be a radar receiver operating in the millimeter wavelength region. The key component in such an integrated circuit is a microwave oscillator, recently described by Gunn.1, 2 Under the influence of a large electric field, high-resistivity GaAs exhibits a bulk negative resistance, and high-frequency current oscillations result. The construction of Norris Dam, built by the Tennessee Valley Authority on the Clinch River, a tributary of the Tennessee River, involved the production of coarse and fine aggregate for approximately 1,000,000 cu. yd. of concrete. A hammer-mill plant for the manufacture of sand from quarried rock was indicated as the most economical method of providing this material. The abrasive character of the feed as compared to the average hammer-mill feed made it necessary to control operations rather closely, and this resulted in the accumulation of many data hearing on production and maintenance. This paper will deal only with three specific sets of data, accompanied by such general information as may be necessary to explain the conditions under which they were obtained and followed by discussions on the relation of silica content to hammer wear, comparative costs of slugger and stirrup hammers, and comparative costs of tool-steel and manganese-steel grate bars. Coarse Aggregate Aggregate for the concrete poured at Norris Dam came from a dolomite quarry within 2000 ft. of the west abutment of the dam. Geologically this rock is known as a Knox dolomite. The use of solid electrolytes for determining kinetic paraneters at elevated tevnperatures is pointed out. The reaction rate constant k1 of the phase-boundary reaction during oxidution of iron to wiistite by CO2-CO gas mixtures has been deternined between 850 nnd 975C, using ZrOz(+CaO) as an electrolyte. Values are between 1.4 x 10-a and 5.2 x 10 ole per sq ctn atm. The tzain difficulty is due to mixed potentials arising from side reactions at the electrolyte inteyface. In a number of papers the calcium-doped zirconia electrolyte has been used for the determination of thermodynamic data from measured differences in oxygen activities (or potentials) between two electrodes. The purpose of this note is to suggest the use of this solid electrolyte for kinetic measurements as well. The principle can be seen from Fig. 1. A thin and compact phase II (electron conductor) is fixed on a plate of gas-tight, polished ZrO2(+CaO) (I), which separates two compartments with different oxygen potential. p, is a constant reference pressure of oxygen (1 atm). ThE Knudsen effusion technique was used to determine the chemical activities of copper and platinum in binary Cu-Pt alloys in the temperature range 1542" to 1673°K. Wiebke and Matthes1 previously obtained chemical activities of copper and platinum in this system at 673° and 923°K by the electromotive-force measurement method. They reported that the copper activities exhibited negative deviation from Raoult's law at all compositions. The chemical activities of platinum were found to change from a positive to a negative deviation at 923°K. Myles2 recently studied this system in the temperature range 1265° to 1356°K by means of the torsional-effusion technique. His results indicated that both copper and platinum exhibited negative deviation from ideality at all compositions. The use of the Knudsen effusion technique to obtain the vapor pressure of metals and alloys is well-known.3 In this work, Knudsen cells were fabricated from seamless tantalum tubing of 1-in. OD and 0.020-in. wall thickness; cell bases and covers were cut from 0.010-in.-thick tantalum sheet and welded to the cells in an argon atmosphere. Orifices were drilled and reamed to approximate a knife-edge of 30-deg included angle. Calculation based on Balson's4 derivation showed the orifice to be nearly ideal. All temperature measurements were made with a Leeds and Northrup disappearing-filament-type optical pyrometer at the orifice of the cell, which closely approximated black-body conditions and eliminated the need for emissivity corrections. Details of the experimental techniques used, and the necessary correction factors required during this investigation are essentially those previously described.5,6 Before investigating the Cu-Pt alloys, vapor-pressure measurements were obtained over specimens of pure (OFHC) copper. The pure-copper data5 served to assure the accuracy of the experimental apparatus and technique.

The stress for rupture in 500 hr at 1000° F has been reported to be about 13,000 psi higher for Widmanstitten than for equiaxed microstructures for the Ti-7A1-3Mo alloy.1,2 Also, limited data indicated Widmanstatten and equiaxed micro-structures to have approximately the same creep resistance at 1000°F.' Recently, data have been obtained which show Widmanstatten structures to be significantly more creep resistant than equiaxed structures at 1000°F, see Fig. 1. These data represent several ingots and several heat treatments of the solution treat and age type. The thermal history and tensile properties corresponding to the creep data are given in Table I. The creep data were taken from creep-rupture tests. The associ- ated rupture data are given in Table 11. It may be noted that total creep deformations are considerably greater for equiaxed structures. Previous evaluations of stability indicated that all of the structures tested are stable with respect to exposure to stress at elevated temperature.1,2 For a minimum creep rate of 10-4 in. per in. per hr the difference in stress levels is indicated to be about 17,000 psi. Holden,et found an irreversible contraction upon heating three a-ß titanium alloys in the equiaxed condition above their ß-transus temperatures. The alloys were: Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-155 A (5Al-1.3Cr-1.5Fe-1.2Mo), and C-130 AM (44-4Mn). The net contractions in length between the original equiaxed and the final Widmanstatten structures measured at room temperature were: 0.4, 0.4, and 0.7 pct, respectively. The constitution and mechanical properties of heat-treated alloys containing up to 10 pct* Ni in Ti have been investigated. The effects of quenching and of various isothermal treatments ale described, and C-curves are presented. The production of the precipitated and the martensitic hexagonal phases on quenching is discussed. MARGOLIN, Ence, and Nielsenl have determined the titanium-nickel phase diagram. A study of the transformations in gas-quenched and tempered powder specimens was made by Polonis and Parr.' Some isothermal transformation work was carried out by Margolin and ~unshah, who determined transformation curves for 4 and 6 wt pct alloys, while Robinson et al.investigated the formation of the w phase in a quenched and tempered alloy, Margolin and Bunshah showed that while a martensitic transformation could be obtained on quench- ing thin sections of a 4 wt pct alloy, a 6 wt pct alloy precipitated a nonmartensitic phase. The present investigation was undertaken to obtain more information on the transformations in quenched, quenched and tempered, and isothermally transformed lump specimens of alloys containing up to 10 pct Ni. Isothermal transformation curves have been determined for 7 and 10 pct alloys and cooling curves have been obtained for quenched alloys containing up to 7 pct Ni. The mechanical properties of 2, 5, and 10 pct alloys were studied, with the object of relating properties to microstructures. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Alloys containing up to 10 pct Ni were prepared from sponge titanium and spectrographic standard nickel by levitation-melting and chill-casting in a split copper mold. I would like to commend the author on his description of Pinto Valley's plant, and its interesting innovations. The author's discussion of 18 ft in diameter by 21 ft long primary ball mills (the largest wet ball mills made to date) is of considerable importance to those who have been engaged in the field of studying ball mill liner wear as it relates to various grinding installations. While it is stated that the mills have operated on a fixed tonnage and therefore it has been difficult to determine the best liner pattern, calculations from the data in the paper indicates that for mills 1, 2, 5, and 6, the tonnage per hour varies from a low of 223 for mill No. 1, up to a high of 314, for mill No. 2, while mills 5 and 6 calculate 285 and 246, respectively. Analysis of the wear patterns for the single wave liners used in mill No. 1 as compared to the double wave liners in mill No. 2, suggests that the author's data may tell more than he suspects about liner wear to be expected and thus what should be a best pattern selection from what may appear to be only limited hours of operation. [Fig. A] is a reproduction of author's [Fig. 10], to which wear forecast patterns [F-1 and F-2] have been added. Forecasts are based on many previous studies of large diameter ball mill operations over many years of field service. Calculations from the first-wear pattern provide an initial wear rate of only 13 lb of liner per 100 sq ft of shell liner surface per day, or 0.031 lb per to: ground. The object of this graphic method is to estimate the weight of the casting, which is to be made from a given pattern, when the cross-section is not a uniform geometrical figure. Such an estimate is a very important guide to the foundryman, who would otherwise guess at the probable weight of a casting of new design, and, in trying to be on the safe side, would probably melt an unnecessary amount of iron. It is also an aid to the designer of a new car-wheel pattern, who must otherwise estimate from general experience the probable weight, have test-wheels made, and correct the pattern afterwards, so as to obtain the weight prescribed. For the method here described, an accurate drawing of the pattern is employed. This gives a closer result than a drawing of the wheel itself, for the following reasons: 1. Calculations based upon the actual dimensions of the wheel involve the erroneous assumption that the specific gravity of the casting is uniform throughout; and upon that basis the calculated weight would be wrong, because the amount of metal poured has shrunk in the mould, acquiring the highest density in the outside chilled portion, and growing less dense through the mottled to the gray portions. 2. Calculations based upon the dimensions of the pattern or " chiller " assume that the cooled metal will not have shrunk, but will have the volume of the pattern and a uniform density. These assumptions, though erroneous, counterbalance each other. For instance, the patterns and the chiller which give a wheel 33 in. in diameter when cold, are respectively 33.5 in. in diameter. This shows a shrinkage for wheel-iron of about & in. (ordinary gray pig is commonly assumed to shrink about 1/8 in.) per foot. Wheels cast in 33.5-in. chillers do not always have the

When I was in South Africa during the latter part of 1904, there were three known tin-fields, which may be called the Cape Town, the Bushveld, and the Swaziland fields. The Cape Town Tin-Field. This district is situated near Kuils river, 20 miles west of Cape Town, and 5 miles from Kuils River station on the Cape Town & Stellenbosch railway. The deposits are in granite, intrusive in the Malmesbury beds, which are supposed to be of Silurian or Cambrian age. The granite, resisting denudation better than the surrounding shales, has formed low-lying hills, the highest of which, the Bottlelary Berg, is 1,510 ft. above sea-level. The rock consists of quartz, orthoclase feldspar, and biotite mica; tourmaline is also present. The feldspar occurs in large crystals. The rock is generally decomposed on the surface, and the decomposition sometimes extends as deep as 100 ft. This formation—granite intrusive in Silurian shales— extends for many miles to the northeast, but so far as I know the Kuils River deposits are the only ones now known to occur in it, though probably further prospecting will reveal other deposits. This particular discovery was accidental; alluvial tin being found in the course of boring for oil. The Kuils River Deposit. This deposit comprises both lode and alluvial tin. The lode strikes N-S., and dips about 30' E. into the hill. It is 5 ft. wide, and composed of dense white quartz, in which pinkish-gray cassiterite is distributed in large crystals. The vein also contains considerable quantities of wolframite. Fig. 1 is a rough plan of the relative positions of the lode and the alluvial deposit, the latter, as shown, following the course of a stream, while the lode crops out on the hillside ,

The solid solubility of lithium in aluminum was determined by two independent techniques, electrical resistivity and microhardness, and the results are in close agreement. The solubility limits X-ray diffraction studies of the intermetallic compound LiAl indicate that its composition is nearly independent of temperature when in equilibrium with the terminal solid solution of aluminum. THE investigation of the aluminum-rich portion of the aluminum-lithium system at the Savannah River Laboratory was prompted by the observation that over-aged alloys consistently differed from the equilibrium states predicted by the latest published diagrams. Chemical analyses of these alloys showed their impurity contents to be quite low; therefore, the results obtained should have very nearly coincided with true equilibrium. A survey of the literature disclosed that previous studies had been made with metallographicig or electrical resistivity methods,4'5 but that agreement between results and technique was poor as evidenced in Fig. 1, which also includes the present results for comparison. The discrepancies have been attributed to impurities,3 and this is undoubtedly true in the early work.1'4'5 The latest Studies,''~ conducted with starting materials of higher purity, employed metallographic analysis, a technique that is quite sensitive to local homogeneity and depends strongly on subjective interpretation. In the present work the problem of defining solubility limits was approached in two ways. The first measured a physical property, electrical resistivity, at the equilibrium temperature. The second, a micro-hardness characterization of a diffusion zone, is a room temperature evaluation of a mechanical property under conditions removed from equilibrium. A close correlation between two such basically different approaches would strongly justify confidence in the results. The temperature gradient in the subhearth metal or "salamandern of the iron bhst furnace results in the establishment of gradients in the concentrations of silicon, manganese, carbon, and sulfur. The temperature and compositional variations observed in three blast furnaces are analyzed according to irreversible thermodynamics and the systems appear to be close to the steady state condition. Apparent heats of transport, Q, for silicon, manganese, carbon, and sulfur are found to be respectively -17.5, -5, -2.1, and+22k cal per g mol. In conclusion the significance of thermal diffusion in extraction metallurgy is briefly discussed. INCREASING interest has been shown in recent years in the application of irreversible thermodynamics to metallurgical problems. In particular studies have been made of the transport of matter in thermal gradients1-' and under chemical gradients imposed by a binary solvent However, no detailed example in extraction metallurgy has been reported although gradients are the essence of many extractive processes. The case of the distribution of elements in molten blast furnace iron under a thermal gradient is discussed here. DATA In blast furnace operation the hearth bottom is often extensively destroyed by molten metal, and the metal may penetrate perhaps 10 ft into the furnace foundations forming a "bear" or "salamander". Several hundred tons of molten metal may thus exist beneath the level of the conventional tap hole and remain relatively undisturbed for several years under a thermal gradient. This system is subject to little convective stirring because the temperature decreases from top to bottom, and mechanical stirring due to movements in the stack and to tapping operations is unlikely to penetrate far into the metal. THE short-time tensile-strength test, while it has not attained the practical importance of the creep test at elevated temperatures, has the advantage of being rapid and is satisfactory for determining relative strengths. For platinum and its alloys, which frequently are used at high temperatures under ill-defined conditions, the short-time test provides useful data that aid in the selection of the most promising alloy for each use. Measurements have been made upon 13 alloys, using wire 0.0031 in. in diameter, the choice of alloys and of wire size being determined by the requirements of a practical problem. Later the measurements were extended to higher temperatures by the use of heavier wire, 0.010 in, in diameter. APPARATUS The use of fine wire made the necessary equipment very simple, since no effort was made to measure the elongation. A small platinum-wound horizontal furnace was used, ½ in. in internal diameter by 1 ft. long, with the wire threaded through it. The wire, clamped at one end while the other ran over a ball-bearing pulley, of a total length of 29 in., was loaded directly by running sea sand into an attached basket, making the rate of loading and not of elongation constant. The sand flowed from a funnel, under a head of 3 in., into the basket. 3 in. below the orifice, at the rate of 170 grants per minute. Pulley friction and bending resist-ance of the wire as well as the force of impact of the sand could be neg-lected, being 3 grams and 0.5 grams, respectively. Furnace temperature .was uniform within ±5° C. over a length of 3 in., although a drift with time occurred, the largest amount being 20° C. No provision was necessary for a controlled atmosphere.

The refining of native copper in the reverberatory furnace, as practiced in the Lake Superior district of Michigan, is very similar to the reverberatory melting and refining of cathodes, but the presence of arsenic in some of the copper concentrates renders the operation somewhat more difficult. Though the copper occurs as the native metal, which is often excep tionally pure—purer, in fact, than after it has undergone refining—its intimate association with the gangue minerals necessitates the cumbersome reverberatory treatment. The gangue consists chiefly of complex silicates of calcium, magnesium, iron, aluminum and sodium, but in certain ore deposits other minerals are often found, among them the native copper arsenides—mohawkite, whitneyite, algodonite and the like. These latter minerals, when present, because of their relatively high specific gravity (7.5 to 8.5), find their way into the concentrates through the gravity concentration processes employed in the recovery of the copper. When such concentrates are melted, the silicates are removed as slag, but, because of the great affinity of molten copper for arsenic, the arsenides dissolve more or less completely in the copper bath. Because of the stability of the resulting melt, the arsenic is tenaciously held in solution. The influence of arsenic on the properties of copper, especially on its electrical conductivity, is generally recognized. For certain uses it is beneficial, and in many instances its presence in limited amounts is not objectionable, but if the metal is to be used for electrical purposes, the almost complete removal of the arsenic is of prime importance. Considerable research has been done on the subject of the influence of arsenic on the electrical conductivity of copperll but the conclusions presented in the literature dealing with the problem show some disagreement. IN developing a consistent picture of the thermal expansion of the commercial chromium steels, which cover a range of carbon contents, it is desirable to know the expansion in the limiting case of the binary, carbon-free, iron-chromium alloys. We have, therefore, determined the thermal expansion of a series of five special alloys, ranging in chromium content from 3 to 10.5 per cent, with not more than 0.03 per cent carbon, over a temperature range extending beyond the transformation region; this low carbon content enables us to draw reasonably reliable conclusions as to the behavior of the carbon-free system. Moreover, the measure-ments serve to determine the beginning and the end of the alpha-gamma transformation; and they emphasize once more the fact that a transforma-tion temperature determined by any method in which the specimen is cooled at an appreciable rate is apt to be seriously in error, particularly if the metal contains a transformation-retarding element such as chro-mium or managanese. The lag, or undercooling, observed at the ? - a transformation is explained in terms of the influence of temperature on transformation velocity; the rather unusual shape of the ? loop is attributed to a change with temperature and with composition of the distribution of chromium between the alpha-iron and gamma-iron solid solutions. The exact composition of the alloys which were obtained through the courtesy of Dr. W. Rohn, of the Heraeus Vakuumschmelze A-G., is given in Table 1. Determinations of the linear thermal expansion and of transformation temperature were carried out in the vacuum dila-tometer previously described,1 using a rate of heating and of cooling of 3.0° to 3.5° per minute unless otherwise stated. Magnetic susceptibility, which was measured in studying the rate of transformation, was determined with a magnetic balance, which also has been described.2

Aluminum-base alloys containing small amounts of copper and magnesium possess but ordinary physical properties as sand cast, but may be treated to give a remarkable range of tensile values and of Brinell hardness. The high-copper (4.5 per cent.) duralumins must be given a protracted treatment which in nature resembles the malleableizing of white cast iron; the low-copper (2.25 per cent.) duralumins develop an excellent combination of strength and ductility with a treatment which requires a maximum of 5 hr. to be completed. THE wrought alloys of aluminum with small amounts of copper and of magnesium have, with the development of the automotive and aircraft industries, sprung into prominence through the medium of duralumin; but the cast alloys remained in the background because their possibilities in the heat-treated condition were either not recognized or not fully investigated. In 1919, the Bureau of Standards published a preliminary survey1 of this field, which pointed out that, in general, the ultimate strength and the percentage of elongation of the alloys of aluminum with and without magnesium could be improved by so simple a treatment as heating to 932° F. (500° C.) for 2 hr., cooling in, air, and aging at room temperature for several days. British investigators, too, working with chill-cast material, found that " considerable improvement in the mechanical properties of copper-aluminum alloys' may be obtained from suitable heat treatment applied to castings."2 Jeffries and Gibson3 made the first contribution to the literature dealing exclusively with the heat treatment of sand-cast aluminum-base alloys, describing the effect of small additions or of combinations of copper, magnesium, and iron on the response to a short heat treatment comprising heating at 932° F. in a

Samples of an Fe-Nb alloy were brought to equilibriurtr with hydrogen-methane mixtures in the temperature range from 950° to 1050°C, and subsequently analyzed on their carbon contents. The solubility pvoduct L = [%Nb] [%C] may be represented by the equation Approximate solubilities indirectly assessed through hardness measurements have been included from a previous report. These data are shown to be in a fair agreement with the present solubility measurements. IN an investigation based on hardness measurements by de Kazinczy, Ms, and pachleitnerl the molal heat of solution of NbC was estimated to 11.5 kcal per mole. This value was considered rather small, and an investigation using a similar technique was carried out. The results indicated a heat of solution about 35 kcal per mole.2 At this stage it was decided to determine the solubility under conditions of true equilibrium . During the course of this work a similar investigation was published by Smith. 3 His heat of solution, 41.6 kcal per mole, is not very different from the value resulting from the present work (42.5 kcal per mole). Our solubility product, on the other hand, is at considerable variance with that reported by Smith. Possible reasons for these differences are discussed below. Mori, Tokizane, and saheki 7 have studied the behavior of niobium in commercial steels, with special attention to the formation of niobium carbide, nitride, and sulfide. Assuming a carbide composition Nbco.87 based on X-ray diffraction and chemical analysis of residues extracted from Fe-Nb-C-S alloys, the molal heat of solution of niobium carbide was estimated to 35.2 kcal per mole. THE United Electric Coal Companies, operating large strip mines at various points in Illinois, pioneered in developing and perfecting the strip method of mining coal by use of large shovels and drag-lines. Coal stripping was first started on the properties owned by this company near Danville, Ill., in 1885. The first mechanical' excavating machine used for the purpose was really a dredge minus the hull, which had been purchased from the Marion Steam Shovel Co. It was erected on a wood frame supported by wheels and was referred to as a dry-land dredge or stripping machine. Wood was used throughout in the construction of this primitive excavator, even for the boom which was 50 ft. long. A single-cylinder vertical steam engine furnished power to hoist the %-yd. dipper arid swing the boom. 400 cu. yd. of overburden moved in a day was a great record.
