During 1939 oil production experienced a new and important increase in Argentina in the productive areas of Comodoro Rivadavia (Territory of Chubut), Plaza Huincul (Territory of Neuquén), and those of the. Province of Mendoza. Production in the Standard Oil Company's field in the Province of Salta declined, but that of the Government oil fields in that province inereased 62.5 per cent.

NUMEROUS investigators1-4 have shown that one of the most conspicuous effects of the reverse marten-sitic transformation in Fe-Ni alloys is the stabilization of the austenite which forms on reversal. However, the present authors5 found a virtual absence of stabilization in a recent study of this subject. The purpose of this note is to account for the discrepancy.

M OST operators of open-pit mines in the Lake Superior iron ore district are quite familiar with the use of fuel oil in the heavy-duty Diesel engines commonly used in truck-haulage service but some operators, including my own company, Pickands Mather, have had butane-engine trucks in service for several years, and less is known of their operation. One of the first installations of trucks for iron-ore haulage was in 1939 at a deep open-pit mine on the Cuyuna Range. These superseded standard-gauge steam haulage. Trucks then obtainable were equipped with 150-hp Diesel engines, and the speed of these units on an 8 % grade would have been so slow, considering the depth of the pit, that plans for an all-truck haul out of the pit were rejected. WHEN Mr. Bain asked me to lunch with you he requested that I say a few words as to how the Institute could be helpful to the bituminous coal industry. I feel like saying, "Thank you, what have you?" I do not want to trace in detail the story that is old already to many of you. On the other hand it does take some little stage-setting to illustrate what is the matter in the bituminous coal industry, a trouble that must some day be cured. There has been something over a century of bituminous coal production as a real business in this country. True, Joliet and Marquette discovered coal in Illinois in 1673, according to published accounts of their travels, and shortly thereafter Father Hennepin also found Illinois coal in 1689. Coal was mined near Richmond in 1750, and Richmond shipped coal to New York and Philadelphia in 1789. But it was not until 1838 that the production of bituminous coal in this country totaled a yearly output equal to the minimum for one class A mine today, for that was the first year that production exceeded 200,000 tons.

STORAGE of natural gas in underground reservoirs is one of the most important developments in the natural gas industry in recent years. However, it is only when we consider this development together with proved fuel reserves, the know-how of the fuel technologist, and the possibility of making manufactured gas available over large areas, that we begin to appreciate fully the impact that underground storage of gas may have on the future growth and development of large areas in the United States. During the past winter, shortages of natural gas in the industrial East were given wide publicity and domestic consumers were requested to reduce their requirements to a minimum, so that war plants might have sufficient gas to continue operations. Curtailments would have been more drastic except for the fact that large volumes of natural gas had previously been stored in underground reservoirs. Storage of natural gas in depleted or partly depleted gas or oil sands is not new, having originally been tried, as far as I know, about 1915. About five or ten years later an attempt was made to store manufactured gas in a depleted gas sand. This proved unsuccessful at first because the gas was not properly cleaned and the impurities plugged the pores in the sand.

THE Coal Division undertook its most ambitious program this year at the New York meeting, with six full' sessions and a luncheon on Monday which had a record attendance and at which the newly elected officers for the Division were announced. Eugene McAuliffe, president of the Union Pacific Coal Co., Omaha, Neb., was unanimously selected as Chairman; J. B. Morrow, preparation manager of the Pittsburgh Coal Co., as Vice-Chairman; and H. E. Nold, Ohio State University, Secretary. During the past year two new and interesting activities were conducted by the Division directed at stimulating the interest of junior and student members. Reports were presented at the luncheon meeting by the chairmen of these commit¬tees. J. B. Morrow. chairman of the paper prize awards, and H. N. Eavenson reported on the work of the mining machinery manufacturers fellowship, the work on which was completed the first of the year. Several excellent papers are expected from these two groups for the next meeting of the Division to be held in Pittsburgh some time in the fall. The regular six-session program was filled from start to finish with interesting papers and much discussion, but unfortunately not enough time for the latter. The papers covered the field of prospecting, mining methods, preparation, utilization, mechanization, and safety, and all through the program we were constantly reminded of the value and need of research in the coal industry.

(communication to the Secretary*):—In my paper on the Conservation of Natural Resources, I referred to the slow replacement of bee-hive ovens by the by-product ovens as a most notable instance of waste. And I quoted from Mr. Parker's report for 1906 an explanation given by him in accounting for the small production of by-product coke. It was that the market for the by-products of the coke-ovens was so limited that some of the ovens constructed were out of operation. His report on the manufacture of coke in 1908' does not record an improvement, and attributes the strange fact that we alone, of all the industrial peoples, delay the adoption of this cardinal improvement from the continuance of the same almost inexplicable cause. To quote again from his report, he says (p. 241): "The year 1908 was not marked by any notable gain in the construction of byproduct coking plants, though some new work was done. S EVERAL FACTORS have brought about a vastly greater interest in the gold-mining industry in the last two or three years. Outstanding is the fact that there is an open market at a fixed price for all that can be produced. a condition that holds for no other commodity. Costs of production have decreased greatly, owing to lower prices of supplies and equipment and lower wages. Improved metallurgical processes and equipment are also available. To big new gold district is being opened up but virgin ground is being prospected with some success in many of the more remote parts of the world and right here in the United States many old properties are being reopened 111 the light of present condition<, tailing dumps are being re- worked, and profitable leases taken on abandoned property. Many of the men who are becoming interested in gold are mining engineers whose experience has all been with base metals heretofore: some are engineers with no mining experience; some are not engineers at all but men who cannot find profitable employment in their usual field of activity and are attracted by the age-old lore of the yellow metal. Some are business men with a little money and an idea that under present conditions gold mining offers a safer investment for it than most other kinds of business. It is to those more or less inexperienced new- comers in the gold-mining industry that this article i4 ad dressed. Those who are connected with the large gold mines or who have had rears of experience with the small ones will find in the following pages little or nothing of interest but it is hoped that the newer generation of small mine operators, on whom the healthy growth of the industry depends so much, may find here some helpful hints.

WHEN there is occasion to make structural use of metals at temperatures above 900°C (1652°F), the choice of alloys is severely limited, and those materials which meet special requirements as to density, strength, toughness, and resistance to creep, oxidation, or fatigue at such temperatures are at a premium. Any new type of high temperature alloy which is found to be outstanding with respect to several of these properties is therefore likely to find special applications for which it is uniquely advantageous as compared to other alloys. Such is the case with the 7 titanium-aluminum alloys. This y phase is an intermediate phase based on the composition TiAl, and extends from about 35.5 to 44.5 wt pct Al at temperatures up to 1000°C, above which the field broadens to include 60 pct A1 at 1340°C.&apos; The alloys of principal interest have a narrow melting range, with 7 forming by the peri-tectic reaction, melt + ß=y at about 1460°C. Unlike most intermediate phases, the binary alloys containing titanium and aluminum in approximately equiatomic proportion possess low room temperature hardness,&apos; in addition to which they have low density, good resistance to oxidation, and relatively high modulus of elasticity.&apos; Unpublished work done at Armour Research Foundation showed

INTRODUCTION Block-caving mines are generally large operations. Calculating the quantity and value of mineral present and determining the economic limits to mining are complicated processes requiring much time and effort. If these processes are to be worthwhile, they must be accurate and reliable. Success in planning may increase the economic returns significantly. Since capital investments in block-caving mines are generally quite large, and development may span several years, quicker and more accurate methods of mine layout are very worthwhile to the mining industry. The purpose of this study is to develop an approach to the evaluation and layout of block-caving mines. The study included development of a simple approach to modelling ore reserves and a rapid, dynamic programming solution for optimum ultimate mining limits. TRADITIONAL APPROACHES TO BLOCK-CAVING MINE LAYOUT General discussion of techniques of calculating and valuing ore reserves can be found in the literature, (1-4). Mining limit approaches have been investigated by many and follow five general methods: 1, Moving cone method (5) 2. Graphroriented technique (6,7) 3. Dynamic programming technique (7,8,9) 4. Network flow method (10,11) 5. Pillar method (12) Of these investigations, only two were developed for underground mining applications, those of Sharp (9) and Riddle (11).

THE indicator cards shown herewith were taken by the writer in June, 1877, from the water-pressure blowing engine of the Longdale Iron Co., at Lucy Selina Furnace, Longdale, Virginia. A description of this engine with figures, and some indicator cards, was published by Washington Jones, Esq., Superintendent of the I. P. Morris Co.,* in the Journal of the Franklin Institute for May, 1877, to which those desiring a full account are referred, but for convenience the principal dimensions, etc., are given below. The machine consists of a pair of horizontal directacting blowing engines, connected at right angles to a common fly-wheel shaft. The blowing cylinders are 4 ft. diameter by 5 ft. stroke; the water cylinders were 18 in. diameter by 5 ft. stroke as built. Both water and blowing cylinders are double acting. The water valves are balanced piston valves, 18 in. diameter, moved directly by eccentrics on the fly-wheel- shaft. Great care was taken to have the areas of the ports and passages at least equal to the area of the working piston. § 22. THe results published in Professor Howe&apos;s paper10 of our determinations on the Ac3 and Ar3 points for a series of commercial carbon steels " containing manganese in varying proportion, represent the average temperatures found by taking several (4 or 5) heating and cooling curves. The accompanying curves, Figs. 6 and 7, are, for each steel, the first heating and cooling curves as obtained by the inverse-rate method of Osmond, using a cylindrical chronograph sensitive to 0.1 sec. for recording time. Simultaneous observations were also taken by the differential method with a platinum neutral and plotted by Rosenhain&apos;s derived differential method and gave substantially the same results, the curves having sensibly the same contours in both cases.12 The observations were taken in vacuo on cylinders 5 by 1 in. in length bored to center with a 1/8-in. hole to receive porcelain insulated thermo-couple, and inclosed in an out- and in-glazed Berlin porcelain tube heated electrically by platinum foil wound on the tube. The vacuum was usually better than 0.1 mm. The heating and cooling of the furnace was automatically controlled by a salt-water rheostat with shaped electrodes, giving a uniform rate of heating and cooling.
