In the study of the chemical reactions orcurring in the open-hearth furnace, it is frequently assumed that a condition of equilibrium between slag and metal is attained. In order to test this assumption it is necessary to have dependable operating data as well as an exact knowledge of the equilibrium state. Considerable progress has already been made in the study of slag-metal equilibria, notably in the earlier work of Hertyl and of Oberhoffer and Schenck2 and in the more recent researches of Krings and Schack-mann3 and of Koerber and Oelsen.4 None of these investigators, however, have employed basic slags comparable to those encountered in basic open-hearth practice, so that up to the present time our only information regarding the equilibria of these slags is based upon observations drawn from steelmaking practice in which there is little assurance that actual equilibrium was attained. The original plan of this investigation was to secure simultaneous slag and metal samples at intervals during the making of an open-hearth heat, recording the heat history in detail and obtaining complete allalyses of slag and metal, then to bring these slag samples into equilibrium with liquid iron in the laboratory induction furnace and thus to determine directly whether or not the observed relationships in the open hearth represent conditions approaching equilibrium. This plan was only partly successful. While slags were obtained from the open hearth under satisfactorily recorded conditions and these were re-melted in the laboratory under equilibrium conditions, changes in slag composition, which accompanied the remelting operation, were so great that the final slag from the induction furnace bore little resemblance to its open-hearth parent and the direct comparison was therefore abnndoned. The results, however, lie within a range of slag composition that is of interest in the making of low-carbon steel. As far as we are aware, they represent the first published laboratory study of equilibria involving slags that contain all the con stituents of basic open-hearth slag. Experimental Heats The first set of measurements on slag-metal equilibrium was made in the Research Laboratories of the American Rolling Mill Co, at Middletown, Ohio. This will be known as series A. Pressure information for use in material-balance calculations is obtained, where possible, from pressure build-up surveys in shut-in wells. Using proper extrapolation methods, static pressures are obtained which, by averaging, give the field static pressure. Often, particularly in fields with a large number of wells, only spot pressure readings are available. A graphical method is presented here which enables the determination of the corrections which must be applied to the spot readings to give an estinzate of the static pressure. Although the static pressures thus obtained are not so reliable as those from build-up surveys, they are more nearly correct than the spot readings themselves for use in material-balance calculations. INTRODUCTION The average static pressure in a bounded reservoir is determined from a number of individual-well pressure measurements. Where pressure build-up curves are available, extrapolation methods such as described in Ref. 3 may be used to determine the static pressure in the drainage area of each individual well. The possibility of using pressure build-up curves presupposes that each well being surveyed is closed in during a certain period and that, during this time, a pressure recorder is left suspended in the hole. For surveys in fields with a large number of wells, this is usually not feasible for economic and other reasons. Either a large number of pressure recorders would have to be used simultaneously or, using a limited number of recorders, the time interval needed to complete a field-wide survey would be too long. The data obtained for this incomplete coverage are insufficient to permit reliable averaging of the few calculated static pressures over the entire reservoir. In many such cases another type of pressure information is available, i.e., spot pressure readings. During this type of pressure survey all wells are closed-in simultaneously and, after a reasonable shut-in time (e.g., three days), pressure readings are taken by running the recorder in and out of each successive well. These surveys, which are less expensive, are often taken at regular intervals, say once or twice a year. In fact, such surveys are required by the state regulatory bodies in many portions of the united States. These spot readings are normally lower than the static (fully built-up) pressure due to the relatively short shut-in time. No direct means of extrapolating such a reading to the static pressure is available because no pressure build-up record is obtainable. Consequently, these data are inferior to pressure build-up information as a basis for estimating the stabilized reservoir pressure in the drainage area of a specific well. For the common case where abundant spot readings but only a few pressure build-up surveys are available, our studies suggest that it may be possible to design a program which will combine the two types of information and provide an estimate of the average reservoir pressure that is more reliable than that obtainable solely from either set of data. in time) gives a point marked p. Research conducted previously has demonstrated that spectral analysis of gamma radiation from the naturally radioactive elements present in earth materials permits detervination of the relative concentrations of these elements. This research suggested that spectral analysis of gamma radiation resulting from neutron bombardment of elements not nor-mally radioactive might serve to identify these non-radioactive elements, and might permit their quantitative determination. To investigate this possibility, laboratory experiments were conducted in which various earth materials were subjected to bombardment by neutrons from a polonium-beryllium source, and in which the spectra of the resultant gamma radiation were analyzed. The geometry of the lab-ortory system was designed to simulate wellbore conditions. The laboratory work demonstrated that some elements not only can be identified with relative ease, but also can be determined quantitatively. This finding indicates that the use of an intense source of more energetic neutrons may lead to the identification and measurement of additional elements of interest by means of induced nuclear reactions. INTRODUCTION In recent years the applications of nuclear physics to the producing branch of the petroleum industry have become increasingly numerous. One significant development, an outgrowth of nuclear science which is of potential importance in well logging, has been the analysis of gamma-ray spectra of naturally radioactive elements in earth strata. The work of Brannon and Osoba1 has demonstrated that presently available equipment and techniques may be used to determine the relative concentration of thorium, potassium, and uranium in underground strata by means of gamma-ray spectral analysis. Success of the research on spectral analysis of naturally radioactive elements suggested that spectral analysis of induced radioactivity might serve to identify, and perhaps measure quantitatively, those elements which normally are not radioactive, but which become radioactive on neutron bombardment. It was to investigate this possibility that the research described in the following sections was undertaken. THEORY OF INDUCED NUCLEAR REACTIONS Of fundamental importance is the fact that an element, when bom- barded with neutrons, emits gamma rays of energies characteristic of that element. Therefore, in theory, an element may be identified by analysis of the energy spectrum of the neutron-induced gamma radiation. If a neutron impinges upon the nucleus of an atom, any one of several reactions may occur. For identification of elements in earth formations the more important are listed below: 1. The neutron may be elastically scattered, as in a collision between two billiard balls. In this case the total kinetic energy is conserved, and no nuclear radiation is emitted. 2. The neutron may be inelast-ically scattered, as in a collision between two automobiles in which case the total kinetic energy is not conserved. The lost kinetic energy reappears in the form of gamma radiation. 3. The neutron may be captured, in which case the neutron becomes a part of the target nucleus, and a gamma ray is emitted. For example, if the target nucleus is H1, the pro-duced nucleus will be H3, and gamma radiation of a particular energy will be emitted. 4. The neutron may produce nuclear fission, or may enter into miscellaneous reactions which result in the emission of

I need not say that I highly approve of the original Welch section, for it is in principle similar to the design which I made ufteen yeam subsequently; and from a professional point of view I would fully concecle to Mr. Welch the credit of first designing the modern steel-rail section. From com- mercial, matter of tict, and practical point of view, he was, however, before his time by many years; or to put it in another way, rail making was ten years behind its time when the new metal steel was first introduced for rails. TO show the vital importance of our future oil supplies to our economy, I will merely point out that this country, with something like 15 per cent of the world's land area and something like 7 per cent of the world's population normally uses between 65 and 70 per cent of the motor vehicles of the world, between 65 and 70 per cent of the world's rubber, and produces and refines between 65 and 70 per cent of the world's petroleum. Despite all the arguments as to which is cause and which is effect, all will agree that all three of these important industries are mutually dependent. If we had not been able to produce 65 or 70 per cent of the world's oil in this country we would not have the degree of mechanization, or the efficiency of transportation, or the high industrialization that we enjoy. Furthermore, the fact that oil has been plentiful and cheap has had a tremendous effect on all the things in which we as engineers are interested. For that reason, if for no other, it is well to look ahead to see what the outlook is for the near and far-distant future.

With the increased demand for lightweight aggregate, such materials have been manufactured from slags, clays, slates and, to a minor extent, the refuse of coal preparation processes. The latter source is attractive due to current interest in eliminating air pollution and improving the unsightly appearance of refuse piles as well as potential economic advantages, if a satisfactory product can be manufactured. A study has been made relating the composition of coal refuse, expressed as washability data, and the properties of a resulting aggregate. Three different refuse samples (bituminous and anthracite) were separated at gravities ranging from 1.4 to 2.96. Their chemical composition was determined. Aggregates were prepared in the laboratory from these fractions before and after ashing, at temperatures between 1250' and 1350°C. The specific gravity, expansion and compressive strength of the products were measured. The response of the refuse to bloat is related to the chemical composition of the ash to yield a glass of desirable viscosity and to the presence of a material which will form a gas in the appropriate temperature range. Carbonaceous material within the particle is a negative factor since after the glassy phase forms, oxygen cannot enter the mass thus inhibiting bloating. Precombustion of the refuse is also detrimental since it removes substances of gas-forming capability. The fraction sinking at 2.60 yielded an aggregate which had the lowest specific gravity, greatest expansion and greatest compressive strength. The purpose of this study was to seek and evaluate possible relationships between the composition of coal refuse, as expressed by washability data and factors affecting the production of a lightweight aggregate from refuse by bloating. The study was related to an intense program in the Department of Mineral Preparation at the Pennsyl- vania State University to study the possible elimination of air pollution from coal refuse fires by producing a low-carbon secondary refuse. Another phase of this program is considering possible uses of such a secondary refuse. Thus one study was to determine if a lightweight aggregate could be produced from this new refuse material and what effect the nature of refuse beneficiation would have upon the characteristics of a commercial aggregate product. It was hoped that these studies would assist in the design of a process and in establishing the optimum specific gravities at which refuse separation could be made in respect to the production of a low grade fuel from the float product and a raw material for lightweight aggregate from the sink product. The combination of producing a saleable low grade fuel and a lightweight aggregate, while at the same time minimizing disposal costs and air pollution contributions would be attractive to the coal mining industry. MECHANISM OF BLOATING Austin, Nunes and Sullivan,1 Ehlers,3 Everhart, 4 Riley7 and others, have stated that bloating is an expansion process in which two essential conditions exist simultaneously. These are: the development of a glassy phase over a relatively wide temperature range (the viscosity of this glassy phase plays a major role in the retention of the evolved gases) and the evolution of gases (SO2, SO3, CO2 and O2) from mineral decomposition in sufficient quantities at appropriate temperatures to form a cellular structure in the mass. Unless these two "type" reactions take place at the same time or in overlapping ranges of time and temperature, cellulation will not occur. In this event, the gas will escape or the melt will be too fluid to retain it; or if retained, the cells may be too large or the walls too thin for good strength in the product. The stages that occur when clays and shales are heated in an oxidizing atmosphere may be summarized as follows: 1) Drying and removal of free water to 200°C. 2) Absorbed water dehydration period (200 to 480°C). 3) Chemically-combined water dehydration period (480 to 700°C).

MORENCI ores contain as an average about 0.015 pct molybdenite, MoS2. Incidental to the concentrating operations applied for the recovery of copper minerals, approximately two-thirds of the molybdenite is floated and appears in the final copper concentrate. The economic importance of molybdenum and the success achieved in its recovery in milling operations elsewhere encouraged research directed toward its recovery in marketable form. Several procedures are utilized to effect separation of molybdenite from copper and iron sulphides, but only two have wide application. In the better known of these two methods the molybdenite in the copper concentrate is depressed in a flotation operation using soluble starch as the depressant. The tailing from this treatment thus becomes a low-grade molybdenite concentrate which after thickening, filtering, and low temperature roasting is repulped with water and subjected to additional flotation steps for recovery of the molybdenite. A thio-phos-phate collecting agent is employed in flotation of the copper minerals. Presumably the stability and lasting effects of that collector type necessitated the practice of depressing molybdenite followed by subsequent roasting to insure elimination of copper and iron sulphides from final molybdenite concentrate. The second important method of recovery is applied at various southwestern plants. In those plants xanthates are in use as copper collecting agents. It has been found that xanthates are relatively unstable and their collecting power for sulphides is destroyed by very simple procedures. The method generally applied is to subject the xanthate-acti-vated concentrate, in the form of a pulp, to prolonged heating using steam as the heating medium. A concentrate thus treated may then be subjected to a flotation operation for recovery of the molybdenite, using mineral oil collecting agents, and the copper and iron sulphides will be depressed. Neither of the above processes was applicable to Morenci concentrates. Morenci uses a thio-phos-phate collecting agent in its flotation operation. However, it was established that soluble starch was not a depressant for Morenci molybdenite; therefore the first step in that process was not applicable. AS would be expected the copper and iron sulphides in Morenci concentrates could not be depressed by the heating methods used on xanthate activated concentrates. Low-temperature roasting did eliminate the effects of the thio-phosphate but had to be rejected as uneconomic in as much as the tonnage of concentrates involved was too great. Preliminary research having established the above facts, it became obvious that new methods would have to be developed for the recovery of molybdenite from Morenci concentrates. A broad laboratory investigation was initiated along two general lines, both directed toward depression of copper and iron sulphides. One approach was through the use of water-soluble oxidizing agents with the objective of destroying the thio-phosphate in the concentrate and thus eliminating its collector effect. The other approach involved the use of soluble sulphides, which have long been recognized as sulphide depressants. These efforts resulted in laboratory processes which showed promise. Research was then extended to a pilot plant having a daily capacity of several tons of concentrate. This operation soon demonstrated that soluble sulphide—basically sodium polysulphide—when applied to a pulp made slightly acid with sulphuric acid, proved to be the most effective sulphide depressant. The rate of concentrate treatment in this plant and the low molybdenite content of the concentrate prevented carrying the process to a conclusion, namely, production of molybdenite concentrate of marketable grade. Laboratory treatment of pilot plant concentrate indicated that a marketable product could be made from it, given a tonnage suited to available cleaner flotation machine capacity. Accordingly, the molybdenite plant was enlarged to permit treatment of the total copper concentrate from the extension plant, maximum of approximately 800 tons per day. In the enlarged plant a major difficulty was encountered. No criteria could be established as a basis for control of the process. Analyses have been made of the forces acting to support a greased solid on the surface of water, and the forces acting to cause a solid, whose surface is hydrophobic, to adhere to an air bubble in water. It will be demonstrated that the internal gas pressure is not a negligible factor when dealing with bubbles of the size encountered in flotation. A study of the forces acting between an air bubble attached to a large flat surface is informative. It must be borne in mind, however, that this is not the condition present in a flotation cell, where the particle is small compared to the size of the bubble. The bubble is allowed to spread to its maximum contact angle on a large flat surface in the first case, whereas in the second case, the spread of the bubble is limited to the surface of the small particle which is presented to the bubble. Kabanov and Frumkinl studied the forces acting to cause adhesion of bubbles of hydrogen to a large surface of mercury, which served as an electrode in a dilute sulphuric acid solution. The force acting to hold the bubble to the mercury surface was found to be the vertical component of the surface tension between hydrogen and the sulphuric acid solution. The forces tending to cause the bubble to separate from the mercury surface were found to be: (1) the force exerted due to the internal pressure of the bubble acting upon the area of contact between the bubble and the mercury surface, and (2) the buoyant force of the bubble minus the hydrostatic force acting at the base of the bubble. These investigators photographed bubbles that were just on the verge of separating from the mercury surface. From these photographs, they measured the contact angle between the mercury surface and the tangent to the hydrogen-solution interface at the point of contact between bubble and mercury surface. They calculated the volume of the bubble and the internal pressure of the bubble. The equivalence between the upward acting and downward acting forces was remarkable. Wark2 pursued an investigation similar to that of Kabanov and Frumkin, and at the same time. His deductions verified those of Kabanov and Frumkin. He also considered the conditions present in flotation and was aware of the effect of the internal pressure of the bubble. Further, he proposed several conditions under which a small solid particle would adhere to an air bubble in water. In 1922, Edser," an English physicist, made the following statement. "It must be remembered that no particle could float stably, but for the possibility of variation of the contact angle, for if this were a constant, a slight tilt would inevitably cause the particle to sink." Wark criticized this statement, maintaining that the contact angle does not vary. The experimental data to be presented indicates that Edser was correct. Experimental Procedure: Briefly, the experimental procedure was as follows. A bubble of air was generated in distilled water. A rod of known diameter, one end of which was water repellent, was attached to this bubble. The weight of the 'rod was measured. The internal pressure of the bubble was measured with a manometer. The hydrostatic head from the surface of the water to the bottom of the rod was measured. PAN AMERICAN PETROLEUM CORP.TULSA, OKLA. CASPER, WYO A field test has been made in which additional oil recovery was obtained from a previously-waterflooded "oil-wet" sandstone reservoir. This recovery improvement was accomplished by adjusting the reservoir wettability through chemical treatment of the flood water. The test was made in the Muddy sand of the West Harrisburg Unit, Neb. The chemical used, sodium hydroxide, was injected as a slug of dilute caustic solution through a water-injection well. The natural wettability of the reservoir and the chemical requirements for reversing wettability were determined in the laboratory from contact-angle studies using field water and oil samples. Laboratory flood tests with a synthetic system had shown that reversing the wettability of an oil-wet consolidated core would lead to improved oil recovery. The field performance indicates that the mechanism by which increased oil retovery is obtained in the field is the same as that observed in the lahoratory. Laboratory studies indicate that higher ultimate recoveries and decreascd water-injection requirements result when the adjusting agent is added early in the life of the flood. However, a previously waterflooded area was intentiorzally chosen for the field test so that unambiguous conclusions could be made about the effects of chemical injection on wettability and the extent of oil-recovery improvernent afforded by wettability reversal. Forces existing at the fluid-solid and fluid-fluid interfaces in a porous medium have an important effect on oil recovery during a water flood. Modifying these interfacial forces in the reservoir to improve oil recovery has been the object of much research. Several papers' ' have discussed the use of surfactants to lower the water-oil interfacial tension. This paper describes work concerned with improving oil recovery by modifying the forces at the fluid-solid interfaces— that is, by changing the preferential wettability. An earlier paper: presented evidence to show that some reservoir systems could be changed from preferentially oil-wet to preferentially water-wet by the action of simple chemicals added to the water to increase waterflood oil recovery. The process was attractive for further study because it used only inexpensive chemicals and because it called for a gross "wettability reversal" rather than for a precise adjustment. The present paper is an extension of the earlier work. Laboratory flow tests were made using treated water and oil in a consolidated core to determine the amount of additional oil recovery and the producing performance which might be expected from reversing the wettability of an oil-wet reservoir during a flood. A contact-anglc study using water and oil from the Muddy "J" sand of the Harrisburg field, Banner County, Neb., indicated the reservoir to be preferentially oil-wet and susceptible to wettability reversal through chemical injection. Based on these studies, a field trial of wettability-reversal water flooding was initiated. in the Harrisburg field. The primary purpose of the trial was to determine if wettability-reversal flooding would improve oil recovery in an actual field situation. The field trial was also an important test of the laboratory tecnique used to determine the effect on oil recovery of certain wettability manipulation, as well as a test of the contract-angle method of determining reservoir wetra-bility. The paper is presented in two parts. The first part covers the laboratory experiments leading up to the field trial, and the second part covers the field trial. PART I—LABORATORY STUDY The laboratory experiments consisted of displacement tests using an idealized fluid system and of a contact-angle study with crude and water from the Muddy "J" sand of the West Harrisburg Unit, Banner County, Neb. The displacement tests were designed to determine the effects of a particular wettability manipulation, oil-wet to water-wet, on oil displacement in a water flood. The contact-angle measurements were made to determine the natural wettability of the reservoir and to determine if beneficial wetting changes could be brought about by a chemical addition to the flood water. POSSIBLE postwar trends of the more important world minerals will be determined in part by their present world position and by the acts and forces that have operated during the war period, so it is desirable first to review briefly what has been happening in the foreign field of metals and minerals. When we first entered this war we of the mineral profession were all acutely conscious of our lack of strategic minerals and other materials, which had to be imported in great quantities-minerals such as manganese, chrome, tin, mercury, nickel, and antimony. But we realized also that we had to acquire vast quantities of those minerals of which we had thought we were bountifully supplied. Our assumed domestic abundances turned out to be woefully deficient, and demands also arose for new minerals never before produced in large quantities. Some threescore minerals entered the strategic list of our imports. Ores from new sources had to be sought, developed, and transported. Tonnages in the millions of such bulk materials as zinc, lead, copper, chrome, and manganese flowed to feed our war efforts. Sparsely distributed minerals such as tin, mercury, antimony, tungsten, cobalt, mica, and corundum had to be lured from their rock lairs in greatly increased quantities to feed the hungry maw of war industry, and the rare minerals such as tantalite, columbite, beryl, and quartz crystals had to be developed and procured in quantities never before dreamed of. New uses such as radio and radar created demands for many minerals formerly thought of only as adornments of museum collections and not as pressing industrial minerals. Such minerals were never before mined in quantity.

(e) Copper-cobalt-silicon and its pseudo-binary section Cu-Co2Si (formula of compound established with some probability but not as definitely as for Ni2Si). (f) Copper-chromium-silicon; formation of a compound definitely established (compare Figs. 1 and 2). The formula of this compound may be either Cr2Si or Cr3Si. (g) Copper-iron-silicon; presence of a phase containing both iron and silicon established in an indirect way only. No definite microconstituents observed. 2. RANGES OF SOLID SOLUBILITY (percentage at various tempera¬tures). (a) For copper-chromium: 0.8 at 1000° C.; 0.5 at 900° C.; 0.25 at 800° C.; 0.05 to 0.1 at 500° C. (b) For copper-cobalt: 3.4 at 1000'C.; 2.4 at 900'C.; 1.7 at 800'C.; 0.9 at 600°C.; 0.35 at room temperature. (c) For copper-silicon (Fig. 3) : 6.8 ± 0.1. per cent. at 800° C.; 3 per cent. at 400° C. and probably below 2 per cent. at room temperature if sufficiently long annealed. (d) For copper-cobalt silicide: 3.3 at 1000° C.; 2.4 at 900° C.; 1.6 at 800° C.; 0.7 at 600° C.; 0.3 at 300° C. THE second session on geophysical prospecting at the February meeting of the Institute was a discussion of the mining law and the bearing of the new method of search on location of claims and assessment work thereon. Allen H. Rogers was chairman of the meeting, which he opened by reviewing the present law and the proposed changes. W. R. Ingalls commented (by letter) on the Arentz bill, as introduced into the House of Representatives in 1921 and the need for revision of the present mining law. L. W. Douglas explained (by letter) the bill that he introduced and which has been passed by the House. SAMUEL S. ARENTZ, Nevada: It is my opinion that if the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is to sell this proposition to the people in the West, they have to sell it to the lawyers, because, after all, they are heard loudly when it comes to speaking in Congress. One man tells the other, "This thing is a vicious piece of legislation"; it might not be, but they will pass it on if it affects them. If the Institute would impress on the people affected that we need a re-codification of the mining law and that such is necessary along certain lines; that things have changed during the past decade or two, so today instead of doing our prospecting alone through the sinking of a shaft, through a discovery that may be seen, we are now moving on to more modern means of discovery through geophysics, through the churn-drill, through geology, through geological inference, I think we could get somewhere.

The structure of steel, when rendered coarse by over-heating, is made fine by re-heating to a certain temperature, the determination of which has received much attention from eminent metallurgical authorities. Among these, I may particularly mention Prof. D. Tschernoff' [Chernoff], who, about thirty years ago, studied this question in connection with his investigations on the structure of steel in genera1. † Some years later, Mr. J. A. Brinell took up the inquiry, and arrived at many important conclusions, stated in his well-known rules on the treatment of steel. ‡ These two gentlemen, however, based their reasoning chiefly upon the aspect of fractures—a method which, though it affords valuable information, does not readily reveal the different steps by which a change in structure takes place. For further light on the subject, we owe much to more recent microscopic investigations, which have made us better acquainted with the internal structure of metals. Such an investigation, closely connected with the present subject, and made by Mr. John E. Stead a few years ago, was first published in 1898.6
