The historical background of on-strand cooling is given, together with a resume of recent practical developments. Laboratory test procedures are then considered in detail, for both productivity and quality parameters, with particular reference to the design of the Ravenscraig No 3 machine (Scotland). A heat transfer model is presented for a porous sinter with propagating cracks. The influence of cooling/sintering area ratio, sinter strength, granulometry, return fines, coke consumption and FeO levels are examined in relation to economics. A detailed comparison of capital and running costs for two different strands, designed for identical duties, but with off or on-strand cooling, is then given.

DURING 1914 and 1915 extensive experiments were conducted at the concentrator of The Detroit Copper Mining Co. of Arizona, at Morenci, Ariz., in order to test the relative grinding efficiencies of the Marathon, the Chilean and the Hardinge Mills. The Marathon mill used in the experiments was the first one ever built by the manufacturers; and since this was the first time that it was given a thorough tryout, with such remarkable results, the data have been, assembled in the following paper and submitted in the interests of the milling profession.

During the last two years, and especially during the last six months, a number of important articles upon the new methods for the desulphurization of galena have been published in the technical periodicals, particularly in the Engineering and Mining Journal and in Metallurgie. I proposed for these methods the type-name of " lime-roasting " of galena as a convenient metallurgical classification,'and this term has found some acceptance. The articles referred to have shown the great practical importance of these new processes, and the general recognition of their metallurgical and commercial value which has already been accorded to them. It is my present purpose to review broadly the changes developed by them in the metallurgy of lead, in which connection it is necessary to refer briefly to the previous state of the art.

The fact that gray iron increases in volume, cracks and distorts upon repeated heating and cooling is rather conlmon knowledge. In ingot molds, Diesel engine pistons, carburizing boxes, continuous furnace parts, grate bars, stoker parts, and all castings that are subjected repeatedly to high and low temperatures, the phenomenon of growth presents a vital problem. Ingot molds distort and produce cracks which result in seams or laps and later appear as defects in the finished product. The heads of Diesel pistons frequently fail by cracking in a stellar shape. This is attributed usually to the result of permanent growth. Distortion and change of dimension of furnace parts frequently renders them entirely unusable. In chain grate stokers, mechanical difficulties frequently are caused by the growth of the links. In proper operation these links should never attain a temperature sufficiently high to start growth; nevertheless, some have grown in. on an 8-in. length when improperly operated. Even though the phenomenon is generally known there still exists a deficiency in the explanation of the mechanism of this growth. The field of investigators of this subject has a decided variation in opinion concerning the causes. The problem is of sufficient importance therefore to warrant further consideration. Review of Published Work Since the published work, particularly the European, contains much detail, only the outstanding results and conclusions of the investigators will be reviewed. The pioneering investigations of Outerbridge in 1904 and 1905 brought forth the conclusion that growth was not a function of chemical or crystallographic changes but was a result of the formation of fine hair cracks. These cracks are supposedly due to a nonuniformity of thermal expansion and contraction which ruptures the structure of the material. More recently Benedicks and Lofquist presented a purely mechanical theory, which is similar to that of Outerbridge. These investigators believe the temperature gradient from the outside to the center of the cast piece causes a contraction of the outer layers on passing

X-ray experiments were carried out to show the occurrence of cylindrical texture in drawn tungsten wire. Only a small amount of (110) (110) cylindrical texture could he found in wires of intermediate thickness, i.e., of about 1.5 mm diameter. DRAWN wires of tungsten and other bcc metals like iron and molybdenum show a well-established (110) fiber texture. Now it might be conceivable that in drawing radial stresses remove the randomness of the crystallites around the [110} axis, thus giving a fiber texture of higher symmetry. In the resulting so-called cylindrical textures a specified plane normal coincides with the radius of the wire. Several authors discuss the occurrence of cylindrical textures in bcc metals. ~ieck' found no cylindrical texture in drawn tungsten wires of 165 n diameter. Leber~ states that in tungsten wires of 3 mm diameter a cylindrical {100)(110) texture is developed, which is gradually converted to a normal fiber texture by subsequent drawing. He also reported a definite cylindrical texture at the surface of iron wires. Peck and Thomas3 observed a nonuniform mode of deformation of the grains in transverse sections of heavily drawn tungsten and iron wires. According to Bhandary and cullity4 a swaged iron wire has neither a perfect (110) fiber texture nor a perfect {100}(110) cylindrical texture. It is clear that the concept of cylindrical texture in bcc metals still lacks a firm experimental basis. Leber's eviden~e,~ which seems to be the strongest, rests upon qualitative interpretation of photographs. The appearance of the 110 and 200 lines on the photograph of 3-mm wire, however, can be very well attributed5 to a normal ( 110) fiber texture superimposed on random background; our Fig. 1, giving a Debye-Scherrer diagram of etched tungsten wire of 180 p, is free of cylindrical texture according to all authors, but is quite similar to Leber's diagram. It was therefore decided to use a different method of X-ray texture determination on tungsten wires of diameters where cylindrical textures may be expected.

A great landslide occurred on June 23, 1925, in the valley of Gros Ventre River, about 35 miles south of Yellowstone National Park (Fig. 1). The relations of the north-easterly dipping rock formations of the slide scarp and of the dam formed by the slide are shown in the diagrammatic cross-section of the valley (Fig. 2). This generalized section is based on unpublished maps and notes by Eliot Rlackwelder, in the files of the IT. S. Geological Survey. Heavy rains and melting snow in the Gros Ventre Mountains had saturated clay layers in the Carboniferous strata, which dip toward the valley at angles of 18" to 21°, consequently an enormous mass of rock at the end of the north spur of Sheep Mountain became loosened and, on the afternoon of June 23, slid suddenly down into the valley. Blast-furnace flue dust is one of the most troublesome operating factors in the iron and steel industry. It is usually involved in all the unpleasant phases of blast-furnace operations. It adds to our aggravations until we are willing to spend large sums of money to keep it out of our stoves and boilers and more money to handle it again and again on one scheme or another to induce the furnaces to retain it without bad after effects. Several successful operators claim that it is useless to recharge raw flue dust because the furnace would never have blown it out if it had been suitable material for blast-furnace consumption. Most of us who have made persistent efforts to return raw flue dust to the furnaces have decided that it is very often false economy to do so. Yet some remarkable results have been attained at the Ohio Works of the Carnegie Steel Co. through recharging raw dust. The plant comprises six modern blast furnaces. Up to 1909, about 300,000 tons of flue dust had accumulated in stock piles. During the last 10 years, there have been recharged into these furnaces all of the flue dust recovered from the furnace operations, the entire stock pile of Rue dust, and nearly 80,000 tons of dust shipped from other furnaces of the Carnegie Steel Co. The results obtained arc. shown in Table 1.

For more than 80 years the Bessemer process has depended upon the ability, skill, and judgment of the blower, although as early as the I860's it was recognized that the process would benefit by some type of instrumental contro1.l IIowever, instruments with sufficient recording speeds did not exist, so the end-point determination was always dependent upon the blower's eye. This placed an obstacle in the way of precise experimental work, because of the absence of the necessary records and reference points as reported by Work.2 The use of the photocell provided the instantaneous record of the blow that made this experimental work possible and provided more scientific control for the process as discussed by Graham,3 A brief description of the progress of the blow will illustrate the recording function of the instrument. The silicon in the iron is being oxidized during the first minutes of the blow, as pointed out by Henning4 in a table showing the order of metalloid elimination. The product of this oxidation is a solid that remains in the converter, so there is virtually no flame during this part of the blow. This low flame luminosity is illustrated by the flame recording shown in Fig. I, where the silicon blow is plainly marked. The dull flame of the silicon blow gradually gives way to the brilliant carbon flame as the increasing quantities of carbon monoxide formed inside the converter burn to dioxide upon contact with the atmosphere above the vessel. When the carbon reaches some low value under 0.20 per cent, there is insufficient menoxide formed to maintain the dioxide flame, so its intensity drops. Throughout the flame drop carbon continues to burn, until at some value around 0.05 per cent an arrest occurs in the recorded drop. This point has been designated as the end point. The period of time from this end point until the vessel is turned upon its side and blowing has stopped has been called the afterblow. This afterblow is used as a measure of the degree of metal oxidation, and uniformity demands that it be controlled within narrow limits. Iron and blowing conditions are likely to change several times during a turn, necessitating corresponding changes in end-point control. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss these changes, the factors that make them necessary, and their bearing upon the quality of steel. Carbon-FeO Relationship In the Bessemer process oxidation relationships are precise. Fig. 2 shows a graph of the carbon-FeO relationship. The familiar "bomb-test" method, described by Mccutcheon and Rautio,5 was used for obtaining these and all other dissolved FeO values herein reported, all tests being taken from the converter before deoxidation unless otherwise noted. All tests of 0.10 per. cent carbon and above were obtained from metal blown for duplexing. McGinley and Woodworth6 reported iron oxide values for blown metal, but their tests were obtained by a . different method than were those

Single crystals of iron, copper, and a Cu-7 wt pct A1 alloy were pulled through conical dies to simulate the constraint in a polycrystalline aggregate undergoing axisymmetric reduction. With Taylor-type hardening, dependence of the drawing stress, od, on the Taylor orientation factor, M, is predictable from the polycrystal stress-strain curve; in particular, for a power-law relationship, it should follow that d log od/d log M = (1 + n). A first-order agreement with analysis was found in the data from iron. For copper, the implied n from the observed d log od/d l°g M was -0, while for Cu-7Al it was negative. The trend was in the direction of random polycrystal behavior. Thus the idea of hardening only in response to the amount of prior slip loses validity as stacking fault energy (SFE) is lowered. Two possible explanations have been suggested: as stacking fault ribbons are widened, barriers from dislocation reactions become increasingly effective in dispersing slip and reducing the orientation dependence of the total glide strain dm that appears in alternatively, or conjointly, the polyslip shear stress, 7, acquires an orientation dependence of a kind which has the same leveling effect on M. The problem of relating the strain hardening of polycrystalline material to that of an isolated single crystal is still largely unsolved. In a new experimental approach from recent work, single crystals of different orientations have been deformed under the constraints found in an aggregate while measuring their deformation resistance. Procedures have involved drawing cylindrical crystals through conical dies1 and compressing slab-shaped crystals in plane strain.2'3 Predictions for the outcome of such experiments were made first by Taylor~ and later, in more general form, by Bishop and Hill.5'6 Taylor's example was the axisymmetric extension of an fcc crystal slipping on the usual {111}(110) systems or, equivalently, a bcc crystal undergoing 'kestricted" slip on {110}(111). In his solution, the deformation work supplied was equated to that dissipated internally in slip on all active systems. With o the single applied tensile stress, dc the resulting axial strain, and dyT the total glide strain on systems operating at resolved shear stress, 7: The orientation dependence of M was found by minimizing dyT for each orientation while activating five independent systems, Fig. l(a).? The Bishop and Hill analysis, based on a principle of maximum work, leads to essentially the same conclusion; the need for at least five active systems is recognized in the finding that either six or eight are actually brought into operation. The mean value from the entire stereo-graphic triangle in either case is M - 3.06. More recently, Hutchinson8 made a Taylor-type analysis for pencil glide in a bcc structure, from which piehlerg prepared Fig. l(b) as the counterpart in Fig. l(a); here M = 2.75. In a discussion of a paper on The Basic Process as Applied to Copper Smelting, by Percy C. Gilchrist, read before the Society of Chemical Industry, London, Jan. 5, 1891,' Prof. W. C. Roberts-Austen asked Mr. Gilchrist whether he thought that the substitution of a basic lining for acid lining in the Manhks process would afford anything like the service which it had been shown to render in the metallurgy of iron. Claude Vautin stated that he had experimented for over two years. with basic linings for Bessemer converters for copper mattes at Cobar, but had given up the attempt on the score of cost. Mr. Gilchrist in his reply stated that he did not believe in applying any system of Bessemerizing to copper. About the time of the presentation of the paper mentioned,Hermann Keller, Superintendent of the Parrot smelter, in Butte, was experimenting on a large scale with converters lined with magnesite brick. He gave up the idea on account of the cost of linings and because no particular advantage was observed. My belief is that his tuyeres and converters were too small. A short time afterward similar experiments were tried at the Great Falls plant of the Boston & Montana Co., and at the Old Works of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in Anaconda. These were abandoned on the score of cost and the lack of advantages. The same cause of failure, in my opinion, holds here. The Anaconda Copper Mining Co., however, adopted the magnesite brick lining for its tilting casting machines. Fig. 1 is a view of the first tilting furnace casting copper. It was made from an old Brueckner roasting cylinder. Fig. 2 shows an elevation and vertical and horizontal longitudinal sections of the second tilting furnace, built in 1897.

In 1920, 531 million barrels of crude petroleum were coi~sumed in the United States. As imposing as this figure is, the fact that the domestic consumption of crude petroleum has increased at an average rate of 10 per cent. a year for the past decade is more striking. Will this rate of increase in demand continue? If so, the year 1930 will call for 1260 million barrels of petroleum—a staggering volume. On the other hand, may we expect the demand for petroleum to grow as rapidly as it did when the automotive industry was having its most phenomenal expansion? If not, to what extent will the growth of oil requirements decrease? When and to what degree will the petroleum industry become affected by the economic law of diminishing returns? Obviously, this matter requires careful analysis, especially as both national and industrial planning must be predicated upon present estimates of the requirements of the future. The purpose of this paper, accordingly, is to project, as closely as present limitations of knowledge permit, the course of the demand for petroleum in the United States over the next ten years. At first, the problem of estimating the future of a demand as complex as that for petroleum might appear insoluble. Fortunately, hon~ever, therc are several scientific methods of approaching the problem, centering around a study of rates of industrial growth, which lend considerable hope that the requirements of the immediate future in this field may be approximated with sufficient closeness to have practical value as a basis of action. Growth oF Petroleum Demand The demand for crude petroleum is the resultant of the demands for the products made jointly from this substance—gasoline, kerosene, gas and fuel oil, and lubricating oils. When mining operations were first instituted in the mines of the Miami Copper Co., at Miami, Ariz., the relatively hard character of the ground in the western section of the property made it seem advisable to use a wide shrinkage stope and pillar system. The system as finally evolved was applied to the mining of 2,300,000 tons of ore by the use of stopes and pillars each 50 ft. in width. Development, mining and extraction of this reserve has been continuously in progress since 1910, and the final stages of extraction are now reached. A complete survey of all phases of this system can therefore be made. Modification in working methods was obviously necessary, and the system to be described is believed to be typical of the best features. Development The preliminary work had three main objectives: The opening of a haulage level, the construction of a drawing-off level, and the driving of sublevels for use in stoping. In addition to these, some extra sublevel drifting was necessary to determine exactly the boundaries of the orebody, the general outline having been determined by churn drilling. This development was based on the requirements of stopes 50 ft. wide, with pillars 50 ft. wide between each stope. The length of these units varied from 200 to 500 ft.. Haulage Level The tramming level was 50 ft. below the floor of the stopes, and the tramming lines were run parallel with the long axis of the stopes. These lines were also beneath the middle of the stopes and pillars. Each line therefore served one stope or one pillar, this arrangement making it possible to load along an entire stope without switching or uncoupling. This advantage is apparent principally during the process of stoping when rapid drawing of excess broken ore is desirable. For relative gravity measurements, the author in 1918 described an instrument1 of which the essential part consists of a highly astatized, standing pendulum turning about a horizontal elastic axis. This type of instrument has been used recently in practical field work, therefore a description of its principle and technical development is given herein. Part I, describing the principle, is a direct translation of the original Swedish paper.1 Part II gives an account of the practical elaboration of the instrument, together with some description of measure-ments performed.

INTRODUCTION THE literature of geophysics as applied to the discovery of mineral deposits has been very extensive during the past few years, but there seem to be few references to the use of the method of least squares for obtaining better interpretations of the observed data .2 There seems to be a general reluctance among geologists and. engineers to acquire the technique of least squares, in spite of the fact that a thorough knowledge of the theory is not necessary for the use of the method.

The Eastern fields comprise a distinct geological and geographical unit, located in the northern part of the Appalachian geosynclinal prov-ince. In this area are the fields of New York, producing from rocks of Devonian, Silurian and Ordovician age; the fields of western Pennsylvania, where oil and gas occur chiefly in rocks of Mississippian and Devonian age; the fields of eastern Ohio, where oil and gas are obtained from rocks of Pennsylvanian, Mississippian and Silurian age; and the fields of West Virginia, where oil and gas are produced from rocks of Pennsylvanian, Mississippian and Devonian age. Many of these fields are of great antiquity in comparison to the age of the producing areas in a greater part of this country, and consequently in most instances it is impossible to obtain accurate historical statistics. In addition, the records of many of the more recently discovered fields are either unobtainable or are not sufficiently reliable to justify their incorporation in a review of this character. Rather than overemphasize certain fields and areas, where complete records are available, when there are many other fields of equal importance for which statistical data are not available, the authors have made a tabulation of development that does not take into consideration past operations and production. The records utilized in preparing this paper were derived largely from the scout reports of several of the larger companies, which generously made them available to the authors. These were independently tabulated by counties and townships, in order to eliminate as far as possible duplications and, excepting the Clinton fields of Ohio, where many of the smaller wells have not been individually reported, they represent the most accurate information available. Market conditions in both the oil and gas industry were far from favorable during 1932 and in consequence there was a total decline in drilling in the Eastern States, which is 22 per cent less than the number of completions in the preceding year. This decline was not constant over the entire area, as is shown in Table 1. The oil fields of both New York and western Pennsylvania were the scene of renewed drilling activity, which was largely restricted to the water-flooding operations in the Bradford and Allegany fields.
