Dispersion-containing titanium-copper alloys were prepared having mean free paths varying from 1.0 to 9.7 P. Tensile studies at room temperature and at 1000°F showed that little or no strengthening occurred when the mean free path exceeded 3 p. In the paper by Mr. Fernom, on Red Charcoal, read at the first session of this meeting, it was suggested that this fuel might be used in the blast furnace with greater economy than ordinary or black charcoal. In the discussion which followed the paper, it was stated that the charcoal furnaces of the Lake Superior District have used imperfectly burned charcoal with success, and that these furnaces have given the best results in fuel economy on record. On consulting some of our well-known metallurgical authorities the writer finds that the question of the use of red charcoal, or other imperfectly burned charcoal, or charred wood, is not at all new. In Percy's late work on Fuel, pages 409-414, are given a few facts, which are here condensed, as follows:

Use of electric-wheel-driven haulage trucks at Chino dates back to 1963, and in today's fleet of 38 units, 17 trucks are electric-wheel- type powered with 700 hp diesel engines. Output of these engines is not adequate to exploit fully the 1200 hp potential of the two electric- wheel-drive motors, and, as a result, Chino has been testing larger prime power sources. An earlier test involved the use and evaluation of 1000 hp gas turbine engine in a conventional Model M-100 Unit Rig haulage truck (see [ ], May 1967, pp. 57-60). Now Chino has tested a trolley-diesel application in the same 100-ton capacity vehicle, and has shown that trolley power on electric-wheel-drive trucks can improve productivity rates from 18-36% on adverse grades, depending, of course, upon haul road profiles.

IIT Research Institute has investigated the potential of high pressure water jets for rapid rock excavation. During this study, an attempt was made to correlate the extent of breakage effected to the mechanical properties of rocks. Six rock types were used in these experiments and nine properties were determined for each rock variety. A regression equation using the two most significant rock properties and one jet parameter (pressure) was established. Although tests were conducted to specific pressures of 35, no minimum in the specific energy consumption was noted.

IN THE changed circumstances which now confront the world, an international open-door policy is the only way to keep pace with the world's demand for oil. You may rest assured that as far as the British Empire is concerned, American capital for the develop-ment of oil resources is welcome, and little obstruction will be found in the way to permit the use of foreign capital in the group of countries which constitute the British Empire. In the war days we worked in close cooperation and harmony, but in disbandment of the Petroleum War Service Committee, when the war ended, I feel that it left its task unfinished. In the wake of war there appeared a ghost of war-time conditions in the form of belief that Great Britain was straining to corner the petroleum resources of the world. I am certain that if the war-service committee had continued its work in the period of reconstruction the real story would be known and this sinister ghost would have long since vanished before the truth.

At the Atlanta Meeting in October, 1895, a short paper was presented by Mr. R. W. Leonard on the " Assay of Auriferous Ores and Gravels by Amalgamation and the Blow-pipe" (Trans., xxv., 645), embodying the results of some very conclusive tests as to the value of the process. His arguments regarding the desirability of the process appear to be indisputable, but the practicability of the field-outfit used by him is open to question. The Province of Ontario, in which Kingston is situated, is still largely unexplored; and at the Kingstoil School of Mining we give much attention to the instruction of prospectors and the testing of ores. Results of a research project on investment or lost wax casting will be presented. The project was concerned with various aspects of the process as they are typical for the production of jewellery from gold alloys. During these investigations testing methods for investment quality as well as for casting quality and the various process parameters were developed and charateristic defects as they occur in practice were traced back to their origin in the process. Investigated were various static casting and centrifugal casting methods in different atmospheres as well as vacuum casting in devices of different design. It was shown that independent of the method a close control of the many process parameters interfering with each other is essential for a quality casting.

It is a common observation among those engaged in the ironbusiness, that the lower (i.e., the less graphitic) grades of pigiron show a rough face on the pig. As such irons are always low in silicon, the generally accepted belief is, that this rough face is due to the absence of silicon. Certain investigations, however, made by the writer on Embreville pig-iron, and extending over nearly a year's time, seem to indicate another cause, namely, the giving-off of included gases, particularly sulphurous oxide (SO2,). It is, of course, the tendency of such gases to rise through the iron, escaping into the air; and the more liquid the iron, and the longer it remains liquid, the greater the chance for such escape. The lower grades of iron, being always colder, tend to solidify early, and before the included gases can completely escape.

The effect of grinding media composition, mineral type, and slurry environment on the wear rate of various grinding media (balls) are discussed. Sufficient wear data have been obtained and correlated. Modes of wear were determined from examination of the ball surfaces using scanning electron microscopy. Five modes of wear have been identified to be operative under certain slurry conditions for the various ball compositions studied.

Mineral particles in coal have enormous variation in size. Some are large enough to be seen by eye, others can be seen with the optical microscope and still others are so small that they can be resolved only by electron microscopy. We paid particular attention to particles of clays and sulfides less than 1 pm in size. Blasting practices have shown a recent trend toward larger blastholes and larger burdens and spacings, although some operators, after reconsidering the situation have gone back to smaller blasthole sizes. The greater pull-down capabilities of larger drill rigs and the greater bearing strength of large diameter drill bits give penetration rates for large diameter blastholes approaching, and sometimes exceeding, penetration rates for smaller holes. In practically all cases, large diameter holes can be drilled more quickly and cheaply, based on volume of hole, than small diameter holes. The industry's shift to dry blasting agents and slurries, products which perform more dependably and efficiently in larger diameters, gives an additional advantage to larger boreholes.

The pressures of urbanization are forcing producers of construction minerals either to transport their product greater distances or find new mineral sources. In areas with significant urban development near the coastal zone, offshore resources may prove to be an economically attractive alternative source. This paper addresses the economic viability of offshore mining of fine mineral aggregate. It proposes a model using a mathematical programming formulation based upon past research on both the onshore construction aggregate industry and the coal industry. The model is then used to assess offshore mining economics in the greater New York metropolitan area. Results show that in this region total consumer cost would be reduced by offshore mining of fine aggregate. In addition, increasing economies of scale could be realized by progressively larger mining operations. The distribution of these savings is also discussed.

The proposition to make pig-iron from magnetic concentrates and cobbed ore with charcoal-fuel weighing from 12 to 20 lb. per bushel is, on the face of it, not inviting; but the work that has been done under these adverse conditions may be worthy of record as furnishing a comparison with coke blast-furnace practice under similar conditions.' The record of the furnace-practice is briefly summarized as follows :—the charcoal was made of hemlock, pine, spruce, balsam, maple, beech and birch woods. All the concentrates, containing from 62 to 65 per cent. of iron, would pass 1/8in. screen, of which about 34 per cent. would pass an 80-mesh screen. The cobbed ore, varying in composition from 32 to 47 per cent. of metallic iron and from 23 to 32 per cent. of silica, would pass through a 1-in. ring, and of this ore about 25 per cent. would pass a 1/8-in. screen. The furnace was blown-in October 20, 1903, with charcoal which was supposed to weigh, when dry, 18 lb. to the bushel. Some charcoal similar to this was stored in the stock-house for about a year, and was then found to weigh 12 lb. per bushel.

RECENT interest in germanium centers around its use as a semi-conductor of electricity in electronic devices. It is generally believed that germanium transistors, diodes, triodes, photocells, and rectifiers will largely replace the present-day vacuum tubes. The germanium electronic devices are much smaller, lighter, and more resistant to shock, and they require only a small fraction of current required for conventional devices. Hence only a small amount of heat is given off by the equipment. This development will require many times the quantity of germanium now being produced, which in 1948 was approximately 1000 lb' and was obtained almost entirely from zinc ores in Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. The uranium deposit of Gunnar Mines Ltd. is on south shore of Crackingstone Peninsula in the Beaverlodge area of northern Saskatchewan. The property spans St. Mary's Channel, a narrow waterway separating the mainland from a group of islands in Lake Athabasca. The mine property, consisting of 12 claims and 7 fractions, was staked in July 1952 by A. O. Zeemel and W. J. Blair. Diamond drilling commenced in the fall of that year and continued until the spring of 1954. In that interval, some 70,000 ft of drilling outlined an orebody plunging from the surface south-ward to a depth of 1000 ft below the shore of St. Mary's Channel. The last 9000 ft of drilling was through lake ice, and when this was interrupted by spring breakup, sufficient ore reserves had been established to warrant the present operation. Surface drilling was therefore terminated.
