This article summarizes the successful incorporation of a flash-flooding stream into the tailing-disposal system at the St. Joseph Lead Company's Federal Division mill, in St. Francois County, Missouri. The mill was built in 1906, by the Federal Lead Co., as its No. 3 mill for the concentration of southeastern Missouri lead ores, and damming Davis Creek was first considered in 1908. Plans were made also in 1925 and in 1937. Dam layouts varied from a reinforced concrete structure to a barrier built of tailings alone. .All were abandoned because of liability that would be incurred by flash-flood rupturing of an incompleted dam. By 1942 mill capacity had reached 12,000 tons daily and increasing tailing-disposal costs again focused attention on the Davis Creek basin. This time the problem of riskless dam building was solved. Moreover, most of the items that appeared in the answer were materials that normally required wasting and the major portion of labor involved performed functions that it mould normally have done, without constructive benefit, elsewhere. The new layout also made possible advantageous changes in mill-water supply pumping; static head being reduced from 514 ft to 9; ft, friction head from 4900 ft to 2860 ft, and pumping can be done now at periods of low power demand. The following facts about the Davis Creek watershed explain the 36-year reluctance to reach these, and other, benefits. Size: 3600 acres. Outline: roughly pear-shaped, 21/2 by 3 miles at the largest dimensions. Topography: mostly hill land with steep valleys. Relief: 760 minimum to 1153 maximum. Maximum rainfall: 3.36 in. per hour. Permanent water: none natural. Now 2200 gpm discharged through 16-in. drill hole from mine pumps underground. Geology: the 17 acres near dam centerline is Bonne Terre dolomite covered with sand and gravel eroded from Pleistocene beds that cap some of the hills. The remainder of the pond basin is on Davis shale. Soil cover: mostly second-growth timber with some abandoned fields; all subject to careless burning, which reduces water-retaining ability. Flood history: flash-flooding that had taken at least one life. Downstream values: two railroad bridges before creek intersection with Flat River. Immediately below confluence, a highway bridge, a low-water crossing, a few business establishments and several blocks of residences. In July 1942 the following segments of an ingenious plan were put into operation. A ditch 270 ft long, 16 ft wide and 51/2 ft deep was excavated to bedrock in the gravelly soil along the proposed dam's centerline. This excavation, which exposed many gravel-filled channels, was run full of slimes drawn from a riser set in the top of an adjacent tailings-disposal

THE history, development, subsurface geology, production, economics and estimated reserves are discussed in this paper. The Magnolia structure is an anticline with a known maximum structural relief at 372 ft., and the areal extent of the producing acreage is 4494 acres. Production is obtained from the Smackover oölitic lime and 116 successful wells have been drilled. The field, which was developed on 4o-acre spacing, has been under strict control. It is believed to be producing with a strong water drive. To date it has produced more than eighteen million barrels and the estimate of ultimate recovery is 220 million barrels. EARLY HISTORY The Magnolia field is in Columbia County, Arkansas, T. 17 S., R. 19 and 20 W. Various geologists had long been interested in this general area, and as early as 1921, John F. Magale was able to define a surface structure. The first wildcat, one of the first in Columbia County, was drilled in 1923 by Mid-States Oil Co., in sec. 10, T. 17 S., R. 20 W. This well was about 1 ½ miles northwest of the Kerlyn Oil Company's discovery well and was based on surface geological work done by jewel and Dobie. Subsequently, several shallow wells that were not carried below the Upper Cretaceous beds were drilled in the immediate area of the discovery well, but none of them contained any commercial showings of oil or gas. In the latter part of 1935, Elam and Magale (or Southwood) Garrett No. I was located in sec. 13, T. 17 S., R. 20 W., ¾ mile east of the discovery well. It was drilled to a total depth of 4018 ft. in the lowermost Glen Rose beds but failed to obtain any showings of oil or gas. Interest had been stimulated in this general area, however, by the discovery of several oil fields, mainly Glen Rose oil production in the Rodessa field in Louisiana in 1935, Smackover lime production in Snow Hill in May 1936, production from the Cotton Valley formation in Schuler in 1037, and Smackover lime production from the Buckner field in November 1937. With this background and subsequent seismic work, which was carried on partly because the old shallow wells drilled in the township had shown evidence of closure in the Upper Cretaceous beds, the discovery well, Kerlyn Oil Company's Barnett No. I, sec. 14, T. 17 S., R. 20 W., was originally projected to a total depth of 6300 ft., to test the equivalents of the Morgan sands of the Cotton Valley series, then producing at Schuler. The well was carried to a total depth of 6325 ft. and tested the objective beds without finding commercial production. In the meantime, however, one well had found production in the Jones sand and another in the Smackover lime at Schuler. Kerlyn immediately made arrangements to deepen the Barnett well to the Smackover lime. The top of the Smackover lime was encountered at 7618 ft. and the well was cored and drilled to a depth of 7740 ft.

DURING the past few years geochemical testing for traces of heavy metals in water, soil, rock, and vegetation has aroused increasing interest. Various techniques for field and laboratory determinations have been described in the literature, as have some of the results of application. However, little information has been published regarding application to glacial terrain. Over 90 pct of the Canadian Shield is overburdened, resulting in high costs for mineral exploration once the outcropping ore deposits have been found. This has been largely responsible for the widespread application of mining geophysics in Canada, permitting concentration of effort on area or zones considered most favorable. However, geophysical interpretation has its limitations, since at least 90 pct of the structures indicated thereby contain no valuable minerals. A more direct approach is therefore highly desirable. If underlying base metal mineralization can be detected by sampling soil or vegetation at moderate cost this should prove of great help in locating new discoveries or extending known ones. A large proportion of Canadian ore deposits contain appreciable copper or zinc, even where these are not the principal economic metals. Consequently the field of application is a broad one.

DURING the last few years, one of the great problems in the milling of all ores has been that of crushing. This subject involves not merely the cost of the operation, but also the selection of the proper degree and character of crushing to yield the best metallurgical results on the given ore. Considering the diversity of machinery, one is led to wonder at the variety of crushing methods employed, even when realizing that metallurgy demands varying products. In an attempt to investigate the relative crushing resistances of a number of ores now being milled in this country and Alaska, the management of the Portland mills requested samples of average mill-run of ore from various companies. The request met with a ready response, indicating the desire of all operators to gain information on the subject. The difficulties involved in this investigation were numerous, lack of time for outside problems during this strenuous period being a serious one. Also, we were unable, in the time, to obtain a correct 150-mesh . screen; in the screen analyses tabulated and plotted herewith, the 150 mesh screen was used merely to protect the 200-mesh screen, not to ascertain points on the curves.

Dear Sir: In connection with the official notice of Dr. Raymond's unanimous election by the Directors as Secretary Emeritus, we wish to place upon record certain statements concerning his services to the Institute which we think have not been published., and may not be generally known to the majority of our fellow-members. When the Institute was formed in 1871, Dr. Raymond acted as Secretary of the Founders' Meeting, and became the first Vice-President of the Institute, and, by request of the aged and beloved David Thomas, who was the first President of the Institute, Dr. Raymond discharged all the duties of the office of President, to which he was later formally elected in 1872, and which lip held for three years. During that time, he visited Europe, and through his acquaintance and reputation abroad, established those international relations of the Institute which proved so important in later years. He also enlisted the support of the mining engineers and metallurgists of the Pacific Slope, who would not otherwise have been disposed to join a society originating in the East. And for twelve years he attended; at his own expense, nearly every meeting of the Institute, wherever held, giving to it without remuneration his best service, and sacrificing for it many professional and private interests.

Magnetic Measurements on Auriferous Veins in Brazil. The present paper gives a few details of the work and the results obtained The problem was difficult and the results not particularly brilliant, according to the author, but the data are believed to represent another advance in the application of the magnetic method of prospecting The instrument used was a Schmidt-Lloyd vertical magnetic field balance made by Askania Werke It did not prove of value for the discovery of auriferous veins of the type there found It is believed, however, that fair results may be expected when studying the continuation of veins that disappear under alluvial covering The data thus obtained should be of exceptional value in directing the excavational work of prospecting A short appendix to the paper gives the results of magnetic observations in the Sao Jeronymo coal mine

Deep-sea manganese nodules are considered to be potential ores of manganese, nickel, cobalt, and copper. Considerable time, effort, and funds have been applied to the study of the distribution of nodules on the seafloor and the location of economically important areas, but less effort has been spent in understanding the origin of nodules. Most theories that have been proposed to explain the origin of manganese nodules have been based on inorganic processes. It is not by coincidence, however, that the area considered to be most economically feasible is, in the zone of high biological productivity in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean and underlain by siliceous biogenic sediment. The genesis of manganese nodules and the concentration of many trace elements are related indirectly, and possibly directly, to the activities of organisms.

Within the past few years, the mining industry has taken a new impetus in all its branches. New mines are being opened every day, while old ones, which have been either working at a loss, or have been compelled to shut down, are now gradually being reopened and placed on a paying basis. This growth and new life is due, in a measure, to the discovery of new mining districts, but the most important cause of the progress is the wonderful advance that has been made in all branches of mine-engineering. By means of the important inventions and discoveries that have been made in mechanics, chemistry, and electricity, we are now able to work ores which, only a short time ago, would have been regarded as worthless. We find, for instance, the electrician eliminating two of our greatest difficulties, those of distance and superior elevation, while the mechanic has brought to the highest degree of perfection, not only ore-crushing and hoisting machinery, but all such devices as pertain to the mechanical handling of ores, and, at the same time, the metallurgist, with his combined chemical and mechanical skill, has helped us to extract the precious metals from the most refractory of ores. The Smelter Control Research Association, Inc. (SCRA) was established in 1971 by domestic primary copper producers to investigate processes for removal of sulfur oxides and particulates from copper reverberatory furnace stack gases. The Association maintains a continuing review of developments related to sulfur oxide and particulate control technology, and conducts pilot-plant-investigations of scrubbing processes with feed streams of copper reverberatory furnace off-gases. In its first year of operation, SCRA reviewed over 100 processes proposed for sulfur dioxide removal. As could be anticipated, the frequency of receipt of proposals relating to improvements in sulfur, dioxide control technology has now declined. However, the number of such proposals still being received indicates continuing research on both wet and dry scrubbing systems, and indicates a widespread awareness, of shortcomings of proposed control. Despite the fact that an almost unbelievable number of processes has been proposed for sulfur dioxide control, few have progressed beyond the conceptual stage, and only a limited few have been subjected to thorough pilot-scale evaluation. The most extensive pilot-scale and demonstration-scale investigations have been. devoted to the so-called throwaway processes employing limestone or lime slurry scrubbing. This work has, in turn, for the most part been on utility plant stack gases, containing from 500 to 3,000 ppm sulfur dioxide.

The importance of recognizing vibration problems during the plant design stage is emphasized in this paper. Often an experienced designer can recommend what type of support to use and how to tune the structure. However, obtaining sufficient information is a serious problem dealing with vibration. Vibration is a well known phenomena which, simply and generally, can be defined as a periodic motion. It is experienced in nature as caused by eerth- quake, wind, or ocean waves, and must be dealt with in the design of structure or ships. It must be realized that wherever there are moving or rotating elements, it is possible that unbalanced forces may induce vibration in the elements themselves, in adjacent parts, or in the supporting structure. Under certain circumstances, vibration will destroy machines or structures quickly and totally. The most widely known case is the total collapse of the Tacoma bridge when subjected to a wind of only 42 mph. Failures due to vibration of machines and/or their supports may occur in industrial plants where heavy equipment employed in the process must be supported and several machines are combined in close proximity. Betterton, Jr. (Union Carbide & Carbon Corp., Oak Ridge, Tenn.)—The authors have contributed to the theory of zone melting by considering the effects of the solidification of the final zone on the distribution curves for the finite length bar. However, they do not consider in sufficient detail the restrictions imposed by the particular metals involved. Eq. 4 has the analytical solution which is equivalent to Pfann's' equation for normal solidification of the final zone. For distribution coefficients less than one, it is apparent from this form of the equation that, as the solidification approaches completion, the concentration attains extremely large values which are inconsistent with the density of physical materials. The necessary restrictions then are that the solute concentration cannot exceed the density of the alloy, or more frequently, the solubility limit in the solid phase. Secondly, the distribution coefficient cannot be constant from 0 to 100 pet solute unless the liquidus and solidus coincide over this whole region. It would thus be more correct to impose limits on the solubility such as would be indicated by a typical eutectic diagram. Furthermore, in this case the assumption that the distribution coefficient remains constant is more likely to be realized. The solidification proceeds according to Pfann's' expression until the concentration reaches the maximum solubility in the solid phasc. At this point, the concentration changes abruptly to the eutectic composition and remains at this value for the duration of the solidification. The width of the flat region, and the back reflection of this effect into the concentration curve on subsequent passes, depends upon the ratio of the eutectic concentration to the original concentration, upon the distribution coefficient, and upon the number of passes. Similar effects on the concentration curves in the first zone length would be expected in many systems for which the distribution coefficient is greater than one, and where the maximum solubility is not too much larger than the original concentration. The discussers agree with the authors that the assumption that the liquid is uniform in concentration should be considered with caution. Kneip and Better-ton' have shown, however, that in floating zone refining of zirconium, using induction heating, the distribution of iron agrees with theory which assumes a uniform liquid composition. Hence, in this case, the experimentally realized distribution coefficient agrees with the present phase diagram within the experimental uncertainty. L. Burris, Jr., C. H. Stockman, and I. G. The activities of chromium in solid Cr-Ti solulions contaitning from 10 to 90 at, pct Cr were measured over the temperatutre range 1250" to 1380°C. The Knzudsen effusion technique with direct weighing of the Knudsen cell was used. This was possible because the vapor pressure 0f chromium is about 600 times greater than the capor pressure of titanium so that the amount 0f titanium effusing could be neg-Lected. the activities of titanium were determined by g-raphical integration of the Gibbs-Duhertz equatiotz. The solutio~ls sllcdied exhibited positive deviations from Raoult's law, but they approached ideality as the temperature was raised from 125 to 138t C. The integral free energy of mixing was calclated from the activity values. AF has a maximum value of - 1.66 kcal a1 1390°C and a composition oj 55 at. pcl Cv. The free energy of formation of 'TiCr, is —0.76' lzcal a1 1250°C. The heats and entropies of mixing usere determined using the second law and thus tile mlues could be in error by a considerable amount. The Cv-Ti system is not a regular solution. ThE increasing emphasis on application of various models to alloy formation and solution behavior has led to an intensified interest in the thermochemistry of alloys. In a majority of the cases where different models have been applied the alloy system used was a simple one. However, the amount of data available on more complicated systems is small and in order to fully understand the behavior of metallic solutions more experimental work has to be carried out on these systems. The Cr-Ti system is reasonably complex and even though this system was being investigated as early as 1937 by Kroll,' no previous work has been done on the thermodynamic properties of either the liquid or solid state. This research was undertaken to determine the thermodynamic properties of solid Cr-Ti alloys. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experiments on the Cr-Ti system were carried out in a water-cooled metal vacuum system. This system is composed of a brass vaporization chamber wound with copper tubing for cooling purposes, a brass liquid-nitrogen trap, an oil diffusion pump, and a Duo-Seal forepump. The pressure in the system is measured with an ionization gage. The interior of the vaporization chamber is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The Knudsen cell is supported by the molybdenum tripod, and a magnetically operated shutter is provided to protect the Pyrex sighting glass against deposition of metallic vapors in the intervals between temperature measurements. Heating is accomplished by means of a 20-kw 450-kc Westinghouse oscillator. The susceptor in this case is 10-mil tantalum seamless tubing which also forms the outside of the sample container. The remainder of the sample container consists Of an im~ervims re-crystallized alumina crucible and a 10-mil-thick tantalum lid. Two holes are drilled in the lid. The diameters of these holes were measured with the calibrated stage of a "Tukon" microhardness tester. The thicknesses were measured with a micrometer. A Leeds and Northrup disappear ing-filament optical pyrometer was used to measure the temperature. This is sighted through the smaller of the two holes in the lid and corrections for the emissivity of the sample were not necessary since the ratio bf cell length to hole diameter was large enough to insure a hohlraum. The pyrometer was calibrated at the ~~t~~~l Bureau of Standards, and the correction for the Pyrex sighting window was determined in the laboratory. Industrial minerals are the Cinderella of the mining I industry. Often considered as just dirt by traditional hard-rock miners and oil drillers, these products nonetheless comprise the second largest segment of the industry and the fastest-growing one. With annual sales of $5.7 billion, industrial minerals make up 22% of the dollar value of U.S. mineral consumption. By contrast, metals account for only 11%. Fuels, of course, are dominant, representing 67%. The dollar values of production and consumption for the three segments of the industry in 1968 are shown in Table I. The growth rate of industrial minerals is shown in Table II. From 1953-1968, the current-dollar value of all U.S. mineral production increased at the average annual rate of 3.8% while that of the gross national product increased at 5.9%. Industrial minerals are the only segment of the mining industry that approached the growth of the overall economy in this period, with production values increasing 5.1% a year and apparent-consumption values 5.6% These data, expressed in current dollars, include the effects of inflation. The growth in U.S. industrial minerals production is even more striking when expressed in indexes of physical production. As shown in Table III, production of all U.S. industries increased by 4.1% a year from 1953 to 1968. The growth in production of stone and earth minerals just matched this figure. By contrast, the average annual increase for oil and gas was 2.2%: for metals, 1.6% : and for coal, only 0.6 %.

The effect of cathodically charging zone-refined iron with hydrogen and the resultant yield stress-grain size relationship has been investigated by tensile testing at -31°C. The resulting Petch plots (using a least-squares analysis) reveal a significant reduction in the slope and an increase in the intercept for specimens cathodically charged with hydrogen, regardless of whether the hydrogen is present during testing or is removed by evacuation. Other than surface blistering, the major effect of cathodically charging this material is to create occasional grain boundary cracks and thus presumably a large number of free dislocations at grain boundaries. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that the slope of the Petch plot is related to the stress required to activate dislocation sources at or near pain boundaries. While there is no significant effect of the presence of hydrogen on the lower yield stress of this material, the ductility is considerably reduced. After hydrogen removal by evacuation, the ductility recovers substantially and almost complete recovery of ductility is experienced by the smaller grain size specimens. THE influence of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of ferritic materials has received much attention throughout the history of the metallurgy profession. This interest has stemmed from the obvious importance of preventing the catastrophic failure of parts in service, and from the desire to determine what mechanism is responsible for the observed behavior. The various mechanisms proposed for hydrogen em-brittlement have been discussed in detail by Tetel-man,'who concludes that a combination of the applied stress and hydrogen pressure within voids best accounts for the many experimental observations reported. From a quite reasonable correlation of the strain aging and delayed-failure behavior of a variety of materials,2-7 Troiano and coworkers are of the opinion that the delayed-failure mechanism (slow strain rate embrittlement as well) is better explained as a lattice effect; solute elements diffuse to regions of high triaxial stress, form uncondensed atmospheres there, and effect a reduction in the cohesive strength of the lattice. Since hydrogen yield points8,9 have been observed in ferritic materials, and since the hydrogen embrittlement process may be related to strain aging, one further contribution to embrittlement could be hydrogen-dislocation interactions which make crack blunting by plastic deformation a more difficult process. The etch" relationship offers a means of comparing the relative ease of initiating and propagating plastic deformation in metals and alloys. In the present study, this relationship was used to compare the behavior of zone-refined iron in three conditions: uncharged, cathodically charged with hydrogen, and cathodically charged with hydrogen and evacuated. These Petch plots and the observed ductility parameters allowed a separation of the effects of the very presence of hydrogen and the act of cathodically charging hydrogen into this material. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE An ingot of zone-refined iron was obtained from Battelle Memorial Institute which contained the following (typical) interstitial impurities in ppm: carbon, 10 * 5; nitrogen, 1; oxygen, 22; hydrogen, 0.9. The ingot was cold-reduced to a 1/2-in.-sq cross section, recrystallized 1 hr at 575°C, and then straight-rolled to a thickness of about 0.105 in. As far as the present writers know, this system of flotation has not been used elsewhere in this country, but in the last couple of years it has been introduced, with minor variations, at one plant in England and one in Wales. The system has been described and discussed in a number of publications. The following is quoted from an abstract of the latest of these," a paper presented at an International Conference on Industrial Combustion in 1952. On the basis of experience to date with the commercial plants, it is believed that the kerosene-flotation process incorporates all the necessary elements to make it greatly superior to anything else now available for treating of fines in wet processes of coal preparation. Additional study and investigation are still needed, however, to determine if certain phases of the process can be improved to such an extent as to make it generally satisfactory and acceptable to the industry. Further improvements will be needed with respect to the capacities of the flotation cells and the reagent consumption.

HE addition of rhenium to molybdenum is known to produce alloys with good workability.&apos; Lawley and Maddin found that the critical stress for twinning in this system was lowered by the addition of 35 pct Re, which suggests that twinning may re- place the usual slip operation as the major element of deformation. The twinning elements in bcc Mo-Re alloys have been reported as the (112) planes and the <111> directions.3 This note represents the continuation of this investigation, in which the authors found that the occurrence of twinning promotes the formation of a bcc tetragonal phase, previously identified as u by Greenfield and Beck.4 Specimens of Mo-35 pct Re alloy, prepared as described previusly, were solution annealed at 2400o, cooled to room temperature, and plastically deformed by compression to induce twinning. After subsequent aging for 8 hr at 1300°C, traces of a were observed along the grain boundaries and at the interfaces between the twins and the matrix, Fig. 1. With increased aging time the cr phase grew into larger clusters and finally occupied the entire twinned area, Fig. 2. Experiments also indicated that if twinning did not precede aging, there was no visible evidence of a in the microstructure.

In 1974, iron pellet production in the Great Lakes region reached the 53-million-tpy level, accounting for more than 88% of the nation&apos;s pellet production. By 1978, pellet output from the Great Lakes district will climb to at least 78 million tpy. To achieve this 50% increase in output, the US iron and steel industry is investing at least $1.25 billion in new mines and pelletizing plants, mostly in Minnesota and Michigan. The biggest effort is concentrated in the Mesabi Range of Minnesota, the heart of the US steel industry&apos;s major iron ore source: here, plans for two new taconite plants-one by Hibbing Taconite Co., and the other by Inland Steel Mining Co.-and three major expansions of existing facilities are already under way to boost Minnesota&apos;s total iron pellet capacity from the current 41.2 million tpy to 65 million tpy by 1978. The facilities being expanded are those of US Steel Corp. (Minntac operations), Eveleth Taconite Co., and National Steel Pellet Co.
