a. Boundaries of the District.—The district here considered comprises that portion of Colorado commonly known as " the San Juan Country." In order to bring the principal geological features of this region within the scope of a map of convenient dimensions upon a suitable scale, I have found it desirable to mark off boundaries near the parallels of 37O and 38O 10', and the meridiaus of 106' 30' and 108' 30' (West Longitude from Greenwich). This area of (approximately) 9400 square miles includes all the formations which we should have to discuss if our territory were greatly enlarged, excepting such as are distinctly characteristic of adjoining areas with independent orographic genesis. By limiting this review to these confines we miss very little of the geology of the eight counties of the San Juan region, viz.: Dolores, San Miguel, Ouray, Hinsdale,

ADEQUATE treatment of the difficulties surrounding the valuation of mineral lands requires that agreement be first reached defining value as understood for the purpose of appraisal. To define value as the price of a product is not sufficient, and does not assist us in using the factors that cause variations in values and in relative values. The real value of any product depends primarily upon its relation to the necessities, comforts and pleasures of mankind. As the necessities, comforts and pleasures of the civilized races differ from those of more primitive man, the value of products varies with the degree of civilization and the environment of the consumer. Coal has no value to the savages of warm climates, and arrow-head flint none to the residents of New York. It has long been recognized that what has been termed ? intrinsic value " must be limited to materials that are essential to existence-air, water, food. But "intrinsic value" cannot be measured in monetary terms. The intrinsic value of a bushel of wheat is due to the fact that it will support the life of an individual for a certain definite time, but this fact does not enable us to measure or to express that value in monetary terms. It has often been proposed to adopt as a measure of the value of any product the quantity of labor necessary to produce it, but this method is of limited application, and will not apply to what may be termed "intrinsic values." For many reasons it might be well, while assenting to the fact that any material may he intrinsically valuable, to abandon the use of the term " intrinsic value." One of these reasons is the tendency to confuse the idea of intrinsic value with a value that is conferred by economic conditions, that is purely artificial and that may be permanent or evanescent; Intrinsic value must from its nature be permanent and unchangeable.

A simple solution model, based upon the formation of molecular species, is developed for strongly electronegative dilute solutes in liquid binary-metallic solvents. Two approximations are considered for the relative concentrations of the species: the random and the quasi-chemical. Equations are presented for the partial molar free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of mixing of the solute. An experimental study has been made of equilibrium in the reaction H2 6) +0 (dissolved) = H2O(g))for the liquid Cu-Co alloys. The standard free energy of solution of oxygen is presented as a function of composition for the alloys at 1550°C and as a function of temperature for five of the alloys. The experimental results for these alloys and also for Cu-Ni alloys are shown to be in reasonable agreernent with the theory in the random approximation. A knowledge of the thermodynamic behavior of dilute solutes in liquid metals and alloys is of importance in understanding and designing refining and alloy-making processes. Accordingly, several attempts have been made to derive suitable solution models to forecast the effect of a third component on the activity coefficient of such a solute in a metal. Alcock and Richardson' reviewed the literature prior to 1958 and also showed that a regular solution model gave a reasonable description in the case of metallic solutes but failed to account for the behavior of the more electronegative solutes sulfur and oxygen. These same authors2 later modified their model by using the quasi-chemical approximation3 to calculate the average composition of the first coordination shell surrounding each solute atom. This modified model was shown to lead to a better qualitative description of the behavior of the electronegative solutes; however, quantitative agreement with experimental data for oxygen in alloys could only be achieved by assuming a very small coordination number. The authors concluded that the major source of error in the model was the assumption that pairwise interaction energies were independent of composition. Substitutional and interstitial random solution models by Wada and saito4 are essentially similar to the first model except that the required interchange energies were derived from the modified solubility parameter equation of Mott, instead of from experimental binary data. Most recently Hoch5 has presented a statistical model for interstitial solutions and has applied the model to the Fe-C-O system. However, as the various interaction energies needed in the model had to be derived from the ternary data, the model does not promise well as a means of forecasting ternary behavior. Each of the above models carries the assumption that the strongly electronegative solutes have the same configurational environment as metallic solutes; i.e., the solute can be treated as a substitutional or interstitial atom in a quasi-crystalline lattice and is surrounded by a normal coordination shell of solvent atoms. There are, however, a number of facts which suggest that this is unlikely. First, the heats of solution are large, being more typical of molecule formation rather than alloying. For example, the heats of solution of monatomic oxygen and sulfur in liquid iron are -90 kea16,8 and -74 kea1,7, 8 respectively. These are to be compared with maximum heats of solution of metallic solutes in liquid iron of about -13 keal (silicon is an exception with -28.5 kea17). The large depression of the surface tension of liquid iron by trace amounts of the electronegative solutes oxygen, sulfur, and selenium9 suggests, by analogy with aqueous systems, the possible existence of polar molecules in the liquid. The effect of these solutes is at least three orders of magnitude greater than normal metal solutes.10 As has been pointed out by Richardson,11 the electron affinities and ionization potentials of oxygen and sulfur are such that it is likely that they exist in metallic solution as negatively charged ions. If this is so, and it is assumed that electrostatic forces play an important role in determining the configuration, it is unlikely that the stable configuration will be that of an isolated ion surrounded by a symmetrical coordination shell of solvent ions. It is more likely that the energy of the system would be lowered by the formation of solute-solvent screened dipoles. The above arguments suggest the formation of "molecular species" between solute and solvent atoms. The idea of the existence of molecular species in such solutions is not new, however', for Marshall and chipman12 have explained in a semi-quantitative manner the C-O equilibrium in liquid iron by postulating the species CO. Chen and Chip-man13 interpreted their measurements on the Cr-O equilibrium in iron in terms of the species CrO. Zapffe and sims14 have also postulated the existence of such species in liquid-iron alloys.

The capillary effects in reservoir rock are discussed in terms of the pressures they cause in sandstones and dolomites. Data for the two-phase case (oil-gas or water-gas) and for the three-phase case (oil, water and gas in rock) are used to demonstrate that in one sense the wetting preference of a rock depends on its saturation. The nature of capillary hysteresis is described for partially stable conditions, and the concept is enlarged. Reproducibly measurable pressures include the "capillary pressure," which is the pressure difference between any two phases that are each interconnected; the "threshold pressure," necessary to force a nonwetting phase through partially saturated rock; the "displacement pressure," which is that special case of the threshold pressure in which both phases fully saturate separate portions of the rock. Displacement pressure is equal to the minimum value of the "capillary pressure." The theory of flow including capillary forces is developed at the producing surface of a well to reveal the presence there of a pressure discontinuity in the gas (or other nonwetting) phase that can be controlled to the end that more oil may be poduced from an oil field. Experiments with packed sand-flow tubes having artificial producing surfaces support the theory. Introduction The basic surface quantities acting in an oil field are two: namely, surface tensions and contact angles. These are the quantities, variously expressed, and particularized as spreading forces, adhesion tensions, heats of wetting, etc., which are measured in the laboratory by techniques mostly confined to flat or circularly cylindrical surfaces. Such measurements have not had the extensive engineering application they seem to deserve because in most practical cases they are unavoidably compounded with the complex and unapproached subject of the internal shape of the interstices of rock. In this paper it is intended that the pressure differences developed in rock by capillarity be examined, defined, and given some engineering use in terms of some new measurements that have been made. Such pressure differences—namely, the capillary pressure, the displacement pressure and the threshold pressure—seem to provide a proper contact between the basic molecular quantities and the oil field. While certain modifications of usage will be undertaken, the present effort rests upon the background of work by the U. S. Geological Survey,l by Versluys, and especially by W. 0. Smith, 3,4,5 which has been reviewed recently in papers by Leverett.=s7 The most important concept of pressure difference is the capillary pressure, a function of saturation that expresses the pressure difference between the interconnected phases in a rock. Mining headlines in 1952 dealt mainly with expansion as the industry aimed for an ever increasing production to meet the nation's needs. Huge sums were expended for equipment, research, and development. Headlines told part of the story. Negotiations between San Manuel Copper Co. and the RFC finally resolved in a $94 million loan for the development of low grade Arizona ores. Magma Copper, parent firm was to supply an additional 8 million. Kennecott Copper Co., deepening its Deep Ruth Shaft of its Ruth, Neyy mine, announced that the shaft would be in full production in 1953.

THE copper-silver system presents several points of special interest in the study of segregate structures. The system is simple eutectic, with limited solid solutions terminal with the pure component metals. The extent of solid solubility decreases with decreasing temperature for both the copper-rich and the silver-rich alloys, thus offering a possibility for the formation of Widmanstätten figures and also a possibility for aging after quenching. In contrast to the structures studied previously the structures in this system are unique in their origin, for one terminal solid solution will precipitate the other, and vice versa. In most of the other systems for which crystallographic data on the precipitation (or transformation) process are available, either intermetallic compounds or intermediate phases partake in the decomposition process; the absence of such phases thus distinguishes this system. The lattice structures of the two solid solutions are identical in type, differing in lattice spacing by approximately 10 per cent; because of this it seems difficult if not impossible to predict on the basis of present theory either the outward form of the precipitate or the lattice orientation relationships between matrix and precipitate. Three years ago we attended the V International Mining Congress in Moscow. This year we attended the VI International Mining Congress in Madrid. By almost any criterion, this was a most successful convention. There were 1717 registrants, not counting the ladies. I don't know how many of the latter there were, but they certainly made a welcome addition to the group. Once again, the International Organizing Committee put together a very impressive technical program which the Spanish National Committee backed up with a brand new Palacio de Congresos admirably equipped with simultaneous translation devices and an organization that provided an excellent social program, a tremendous set of post- meeting excursions, and very impressive opening ceremonies, entertainment and closing ceremonies. There was also an exhibit on the subject of Spanish and Spanish American mining history in the Palacio de Congresos.

Stress-stvain curves are presented for Ni3Al (y') cvystals in several ovientations, deformed in tension and compression at constant displacement rate, at temperatures from 70° to 2000°F. Both the yield stress and wovk havdening increase with temperature, with the magnilude of the effect dependent on ovientation. The yield stress maximum occurs at 1500°F in [001], at 1400°F in [011], and at 1200°F in [111]. The suppression of the yield stress peak in [011] and [111] orientatiorzs is due to the onset of cube slip, rather than octahedval slip, a1 elerated temperatures. The temperature and orientalion dependence of work hardening in nominal single slip orientations corvelates with changes in the CRSS ratio for octahedral slip and cube slip, in agreement with a model for work hardening based on pinning of screw dislocalions by cross slip from an octahedral plane into a cube plane. It is concluded that the unique plastic properties of y' have a decisive influence on both ductility and strength characleristics of y +y' nickel-base superalloys. It has long been recognized that the strength of y + y' nickel-base superalloys depends on the precipitation of the y' phase [basically Ni3(Al,Ti)]. This paper presents new data on the strength characteristics of single crystals of simple y' (Ni3Al), and forms the first step in a systematic program aimed at elucidating the mechanisms of hardening in the complex commercial alloys. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals of off-stoichiometric NiA1 were grown from the melt under vacuum by a modified Bridgman method. The melt was poured into a preheated alumina mold and crystal growth was promoted from one end by gradient cooling. The crystals were homogenized by annealing in hydrogen at 2400° F for 72 hr followed by furnace cooling. Chemical analysis of samples taken from several crystals gave an average composition of 88.2 wt pct Ni. Spectrographic analysis gave as the principal impurities in weight percent— Si (0.02), Mg (0.01), Fe (0.02), Ti (0.002), Cu (0.008), and Co (0.03). Tensile specimens with specifications as in Fig. 1 were prepared by a series of operations involving electrical discharge machining, precision grinding, and electropolishing. Compression specimens with dimensions 1/4 by 1/4 by -3/4 in. were prepared in a similar manner, except for the initial shaping operation using a precision cut-off wheel/two-circle goniometer unit to give selected crystal orientations. Specimens were deformed in a Baldwin-Wiedemann testing machine with furnace attachment, using a strain rate of 5 x 10-4 sec-1. The strain measuring device consisted of extension arms attached to the tensile grips (or compression plattens) at one end and leading out of the furnace to an LVDT at the other. Temperature was controlled by a thermocouple placed in contact with the specimen. According to the known phase diagram for the Ni/A1 system,' when an alloy of the specified composition is cooled from the melt, primary y (nickel solid solution) dendrites grow at the expense of the liquid phase, which becomes enriched in aluminum. At the eutectic composition the remaining liquid freezes as a two-phase mixture of y + y' (Ni3Al). Upon further cooling, a solid state transformation occurs, involving the precipitation of y' in the primary dendrites, and the complete transformation of the eutectic mixture to massive y'. The as-cast structure consists, therefore, of y + y' dendrites with interdendritic regions of massive y', i.e., transformed eutectic, Fig. 2. 2) DISCUSSION OF RESULTS 2.1) Stress-Strain Curves. Fig. 3 shows tensile stress-strain curves for crystals in orientations close to [001] deformed at temperatures from 70° to 2000°F. Both the yield stress and total elongation are strongly temperature-dependent. At 70°F, easy glide is absent, and the work hardening coefficient BIT - G/300. At T > 1500°F, the negative slope of the stress-strain curves is due to pronounced necking in the crystals. The yield stress maximum at 1500° F corresponds with a minimum in the ductility, Fig. 4. Heap leaching, as practiced at Rio Tinto, Spain, while one of the oldest, and probably one of the cheapest, methods of extracting copper from its ores, has not had, until recently, other than experimental application in this country. This has been due partly to a mistaken idea that the Rio Tinto ores possess some obscure and mysterious quality that renders them alone suitable to the process, partly to the fact that tests properly made meant the expenditure of large sums of money and several years time, and partly to the fact that favorable commercial and other conditions are not often found. This paper gives some views on the chemistry and mechanism of the method, an account of the preliminary experiments, and the final plans adopted for a large-scale installation of the method by the Phelps Dodge Corpn. for treating low-grade ore from Sacramento Hill, Bisbee. If results comparable with those obtained from the test heap are to be had from the large plant, this plant will operate on the lowest-grade sulfide ore now being treated commercially in the country. The method has several advantages: The installation cost is low. Interest charges must, of course, be made both on the cost of the ore delivered to the plant and for the plant itself, but as these are low, there is considerable advantage in the ability to regulate output by more or less complete shutdowns in accordance with market and other conditions. The amount of labor needed is small, and the cement copper produced may be considered nearer a finished product than the sulfide concentrates from a mill, and certainly means less installation cost per ton to put into final form by present methods. At Bisbee, conditions were favorable for a trial of the method for, in the preparation of the Sacramento Hill orebody for steam shoveling,' a large amount of material below concentrating grade had to be moved to

A LTHOUGH the efficiency of coal utilization has A improved steadily since the turn of the century as a result of continued research and development, little of this increase in efficiency can be credited to improvements in the single retort stoker. There are still numerous problems connected with the burning of coal on this type of unit, the solution of which would be a stimulus to coal and stoker sales and a boon to the user. Among the more critical of these problems is that of burning slack bituminous coal of strong caking tendency and containing large percentages of fine material. With the increased trend toward mechanical mining, it may be expected that in the future an even larger percentage of the coal available for use on this class of stokers will contain higher percentages of the fine sizes, thus aggravating an already serious problem. During the war, the problem of efficient and economic burning of available coals on the single retort industrial stoker, particularly the class 4 stokers (301 to 1200 lb per hr), became quite critical in many localities. In addition to the inherent problems associated with the use of this class stoker, the coals available were frequently not those best suited for use on this equipment and the manpower shortage made it difficult as well as expensive for the consumer to provide the labor necessary to keep the iires in reasonably satisfactory condition. Although exact figures on the number of class 4 stokers are not available, the yearly tonnages of coal consumed are of considerable consequence and have been estimated* at between 15 and 20 million the stoker research staff of the Mineral Industries Experiment Station of The Pennsylvania State College was requested to study the performance of the single retort industrial stoker and to undertake a program of research on the more efficient burning of bituminous coal on this class of unit. Various aspects of overall problem have been investigated since the inception of this program in 1942, only one of which is here reported. General Considerations There are numerous factors which appear directly or indirectly to affect the overall performance of bituminous coal underfeed stokers, such as the caking or matting properties of the coal, the contact relationships between coal and air, the ash fusion characteristics, the burning rate, and the design of the stoker and furnace in which the coal is burned. In recent years, the damping capacity of metals has come to be recognized as an important index of certain types of structural change. In a number of instances, this property has proved to be particularly sensitive, but insufficient work has been done to permit a general interpretation. There is considerable question at the present time as to just what factors are responsible for the internal dissipation of energy when a metal is carried through a cycle of stress, and these factors must be ascertained if the value of the damping method as a metallurgical tool is to be determined. Since internal stresses are among the chief causes of dissipation of internal energy, or damping capacity, it was thought that a study of the changes in damping during the recovery and recrystalliza-tion of a cold-worked metal might throw some light upon the subject, particularly if the damping changes were correlated with other properties that are better understood. Probably more work has been done on the recrystallization phenomena of alpha brass than on any other metal, so this was chosen as the material for the present investigation. Damping measurements on brass have been made by Förster and Köster.1 They showed that the annealing of a brass that had been cold-drawn to 50 per cent reduction produced a rapid fall in the damping, a flat minimum occurring at approximately the temperature of recrystallization. The damping remained at a low value until grain growth was well under way and then it increased rapidly with increasing grain size. Köster and Rosenthal2 continued the work in greater detail. They pointed out that the damping decrease does not correspond to the hardness drop but occurs at a lower temperature, suggesting that the relief or redistribution of internal stresses has a large effect while the actual recrystallization effect is small. They also show the increase in damping at the higher annealing temperatures. Their curves are reproduced in Fig. 1.

THE high corrosion resistance possessed by tin under most circumstances, combined with its generally satisfactory appearance and useful physical properties, has led to many and varied uses for the metal. These uses have been partly limited by the fact that tin is an expensive metal, therefore many applications have been developed in which tin has been employed in combination with lead, either by coating, as in tin-lined collapsible tubes, or by the formation of alloys containing various proportions of tin-rich and lead-rich phases, as terne plate. A detailed knowledge of the corrosion characteristics of the tin-lead couple therefore is of general interest and has become specially important at the present time, when every effort is being made to conserve tin as much as possible. The present study has been limited to carbonate solutions with a pH range from 8.4 to 11.2 so that the results may be related to earlier work on the corrosion of tin and its alloys.1-3,6 In these papers, the effects of a number of anion and cation additions to these solutions have been observed. APPARATUS AND METHOD The electrodes for the corrosion cell were cut from rolled sheet about 1/16 in. thick. The length of all specimens was held constant at 7 in., while the width was varied from ½ to 2 in. These electrodes were fastened to brass electrode supports, which were attached to rubber stoppers fitting into tall-type one-liter Pyrex beakers that contained the electrolyte. The lead electrodes were prepared from Omaha pig* and the tin was rolled from a slab of Chempur.† After cutting to size, the sheets were polished with No. I emery paper and cleaned with carbon tetrachloride. The edges, back and upper parts of the specimen were coated with a synthetic lacquer, which was supplemented with beeswax for the lead electrodes. The binding posts were coated with beeswax after the electrodes had been clamped. The pH of the electrolyte was controlled by adjusting the ratio of carbonate to bicarbonate. Approximately 600 ml. of electrolyte was used in each beaker. The entire assembly was placed in an oil bath thermostatically adjusted to operate at 30°C. ± 0.1°. Potentials were measured against a saturated calomel electrode connected to the cell by an agar-agar salt bridge. The basic objective of this paper is to present a review of the state of knowledge concerning the fundamental mechanics of rock/bit-tooth interaction under downhole conditions. Of particular concern is the contributing significance of the various variables associated with the generation of rock chips by a single penetrating bit-tooth. The variables to be considered are fluid pressures which simulate borehole conditions, the mechanical properties of the rock, the shape and angle of attack of a bit-tooth, and the rate of load application on a bit-tooth. In addition, consideration is given to multiple bit-tooth penetration insofar as the effects of distance from and geometrical shape of adjacent penetration craters are concerned. Both experimental results and idealized theoretical models for single bit-tooth penetration are presented. Finally, the applicability of plasticity theory to drilling phenomena at depth, results of recent drag-bit studies, and several general theories of roller-bit drilling are briefly discussed. FUNDAMENTALS OF ROCK/BIT-TOOTH INTERACTION Drilling efficiency at depth in terms of penetration rate depends largely upon three essentially interdependent factors: 1) the bit, insofar as the mechanical motion, shape, and configuration of the bit-teeth are concerned; 2) the rock, as regards its mechanical behavior, or response to the penetrating action of the bit-teeth, when subjected to a state of stress induced by mud column, interstitial pore, and overburden pressure (and at great depths to high temperature) ; and
