THE manganese ore deposits of the Gold Coast, British West Africa, occur in very ancient rocks, of both sedimentary and metamorphic types. In. certain respects they strongly resemble those of India and Brazil, as contrasted with those of Tertiary age in Georgia. Viewed from the present condition of the maganiferous rocks, the oldest deposits are in the sediments. Later than these are the progressively metamorphosed representatives of these sediments; youngest are the products of decay and degradation with the concentration of manganese oxide of both areas. The oldest occurrences are in argillaceous and siliceous phyllites and slates, which show only a moderate amount of metamorphism. They belong to a series which also includes mudstones, sandstones, grits, conglomerates and subordinate limestones, with tuffs and lava-flows largely of basic types. To this series I have given the name Birrim. Its age is unknown, for no definite fossils have been discovered in it. As the characteristics of these non-fossiliferous strata at many places are the same as those of strata in many parts of the world that are suitable for the preservation of fossils and that contain them, it is assumed that the Gold Coast deposits are pre-Cambrian. These rocks of the Birrim series have normally a northeast-southwest strike and are folded, but not to any very great degree except in certain belts., From the Eastern Province of the Gold Coast they may be traversed across their strike for more than 600 miles to the extreme northwestern corner of the Northern Territories. Thence. they probably extend much further into French Territory.

Reserves of Lake Superior Manganiferous Iron Ores Appendix-to paper by CARL ZAPFFE, presented at the Cleveland Meeting and issued, as Pamphlet No. 1664-C, with MINING AND METALLURGY, May, 1927. The author has made several test calculations on the basis of manganese units that are and may be involved. These are summarized here, as follows: On the basis of ore produced since 1902, the average annual requirement of manganese units would be 91,000 tons; on the basis of the production of the past 4 or 5 years, the requirement would be 145,000 tons; on the basis of the year 1925 only, the requirement would be 155,000 tons. Applying the percentage of increase for the next 20 years, as determined by the plat shown as Fig. 3, the total requirement for 20 years would be 3,254,000 to 3,572,000 tons, if one used either 145,000 tons or 155,000 tons as a starting point. We have the following interesting facts: (1) The Michigan ores contain only about one-half the manganese that the Cuyuna ore does; (2) the Cuyuna district now produces one-half the ore required; (3) the known tonnage of Cuyuna reserves is greater than the speculative reserve offered for Michigan; (4) at the present rate of production considered by tons, Michigan ores ought to be exhausted in 20 years or less while Cuyuna ores would last up to 44 years. We should now reduce the estimated reserves to a basis of manganese, units. Using the tonnages listed in Combinations 2, 3, 4 and 5, the reserves total 3,118,225 tons, 3,781,995 tons, 5,041,995 tons and 5,560,342 tons, respectively. Therefore, needing at the most 3,572,000 tons, as shown above, either Combination 3, 4 or 5 will not only suffice but will leave an excess-enough for 1 or 2 years for Combination 3, 9 or 10 years for Combination 4, and 12' to 13 years for Combination 5. This means that for Combination 5, without using tonnages obtained from beneficiating or from mixing poor ores, the reserves are ample for about 33 years.

In an earlier publication, the application of exoelectron technology to the monitoring of dry grinding in a ball mill was reported. Recently, the author has investigated the ball mill problem in more detail with the system shown in [Fig.1]. Here, some of the current generated in the ore-ball-water mixture was picked up by the metal chains and served as a measure of the rate of grinding. While the mechanism of current generation has not been completely clarified, a parallel study of electrical effects associated with rock drilling indicated that the major driving force is the zeta potential*, while oxidation of the freshly fractured material provides the remainder of the current. Both of these effects are sensitive to the exposed surface area, and it might be expected that the observed currents would provide a measure of the grinding rate. This "surface area" effect allows the measurement system to be used in any type of rock or ore grinding. Some studies with sulfide copper ore indicate higher currents than those observed with silica sand, but the overall pattern of current versus grinding rate is essentially the same. Experimental Studies The experimental system was set up as shown in [Fig. 1]. The initial studies were done with silica sand because of its availability and for comparison with the data of reference 1. The sand was sized to an average of 425 /MI (40 mesh); a typical charge consisted of 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) of sand, 0.85 L (0.22 gal) of tap water and 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) of iron grinding balls 25.5 mm (1 in.) in diameter. For a typical "run," the mill was loaded with a fresh charge of ore and operated for periods ranging from 10-60 min. During this time, the current was measured with a Keithley 417 picoammeter and a chart recorder. At the end of the grinding period, the charge was removed and sieved to recover the 425, 300, and 212 µm (40, 50, and 70 mesh) fractions which were then drained and weighed. A fresh charge was used for each test and every attempt was made to keep the draining and weighing processes uniform.

THE war emergency has affected every phase of industry. The gas and coke-oven companies have sought faithfully to discharge their responsibility in this critical period and have willingly modified their operations where possible to meet the ever increasing demands made upon them. Our company made commitments for blast-furnace coke for war purposes which necessitated a reduction in coking time in order to produce the amount required to. meet the new demands. At the same time there were certain customers of long standing, who had been supplied with foundry and egg-sized coke produced on fairly long coking periods, who also were engaged in war work and whose patronage we desired to retain. Coke produced on short coking rates from the coal mixture we were then using would not have been satisfactory for these customers. The average width of our ovens is 19 ¾ in., which is a little wider than the more modern ovens of the present day. They were originally designed to give somewhat cool tops in order to produce a rich gas. This necessitates carrying the heats a little on the warm side so that the tops will be fully carbonized. A reduction in coking time, as is generally known, is accompanied by a reduction in the average size of the coke produced. This is due to the greater shrinkage that takes place at the higher temperatures required to carbonize the charges in a shorter time. The net result is that the coke is more cross fractured and longitudinally fractured and breaks up into small sizes on handling. The cokes produced from the better coking coals seem to be more susceptible to fracture at high temperatures than those from poorer coking coals. A coal mixture that produces a beautiful foundry-sized coke at 30 to 36 hr. may yield a product at 18 hr. that would be so badly fractured as to be unsatisfactory for foundry practice. COKING CHARACTERISTICS OF COALS Our problem was to find some economical innovation and develop a method that would enable us to reduce the coking time and still produce a coke satisfactory to our foundry trade. However, before discussing the results of our present operations, it might be well to present a few observations on the coking characteristics of coals in general. Most coke-oven operators carbonize a blended mixture of coals. It may consist of a single high-volatile coal with a single low-volatile coal, or of a combination of several high-volatile and low-volatile coals. Medium-volatile coals of the Eagle seam are used for the production of high-grade foundry coke. Medium and high-volatile coals are often blended with one or more low-volatile coals. The possibilities are almost infinite, but the combinations are limited by such factors as cost and facilities for handling multicoal mixtures, and by other practical considerations. The same alloy has now become a commercial product in the wrought state, and, as not only rails and bars are rolled daily but a great variety of forged and otherwise fabricated shapes are appearing, it may be interesting to mark the progress and, perhaps, to look a little closely into the nature of this important material of engineering.

Auburn Dam will be a thin, double-curvature concrete arch dam about 685 ft high. With a crest length of about 4000 ft, it will be the world's longest single-arch dam. The site is located on the North Fork of the American River about 40 miles northeast of Sacramento, Calif. Construction is scheduled to get under way in 1970. In planning for the design and construction of Auburn Dam (see artist's conception), the foundation material, with its various discontinuities, is being investigated and the structural characteristics of the rock mass evaluated. The investigation and testing programs will aid in defining the pertinent geologic features and their individual and cumulative influence on the foundation. The work includes geologic surface mapping, surface trenching, core drilling, geophysics, tunneling, excavating shafts and raises, performing in-situ tests, and conducting laboratory tests on core and block samples. Competent amphibolite is the predominant material in the foundation, but significant bodies of chloritic, talcose, and metasedimentary rocks, a strongly developed jointing pattern, faults, and shear zones also affect the deformability of the rock mass. A comprehensive rock mechanics program, closely coordinated with geologic investigations as well as the engineering studies, therefore is required The rock mechanics work is a combination of many analytical studies and experimental investigations. The experimental work includes laboratory tests on core samples from holes drilled for geological studies of the entire foundation and in-situ tests performed in selected areas. The laboratory testing program evaluates the general properties of all important rock types and aids in correlating many of the key structural features encountered within the foundation. The knowledge-feigning, theory- straining mining engineer." -Anonymous INTRODUCTION Taxes levied against mining properties and operations are a critical cost in the economic evaluation of mining investments. Indeed, taxes represent a substantial cost of doing business in the minerals industry and often have a significant impact on corporate investment decisions. A good example was the postponement of mineral development in the state of Wisconsin, primarily because of what was perceived to be excessive taxes imposed by that state. In many respects mining investments are no different from other industrial investments. Astute taxing authorities should recognize that geologic endowment is a necessary but clearly not a sufficient condition for mineral investments. The fact that a mineral deposit exists does not necessarily mean that it will ultimately be developed-a point that many taxing authorities fail to recognize. While it is true that ore deposits are not mobile in the sense that they cannot be physically moved to a district having more favorable taxes, corporate investment capital certainly is mobile and flows to ventures which maximize wealth to the firm. In short, higher taxes reduce project yields and tend to drive investment capital elsewhere. The appropriate type and level of taxation imposed upon the mining industry continues to be a very controversial and emotion-charged topic. Mining activities have been taxed at various levels over the years due to widely differing taxation philosophies. Location has also influenced taxation policies, as evidenced by the diversity of tax laws and assessment procedures applied to mineral deposits by the various states. Indeed, mineral taxation varies from state to state, from county to county, and from one mineral commodity to another. Whether or not a given tax is appropriate for a specific mineral deposit, or even an industry, is a difficult problem to assess. First, the type or kind of tax which should be imposed must be considered. Second, it is most important to define a fair and unambiguous base against which to levy the tax. Finally, one must consider the tax rate to be applied to this base. It is the combination of these two components

Low-TEMPERATURE carbonization needs no introduction to the literature on coal. This paper will attempt no review of that literature; it tells the story of the commercial development of one of the processes for carbonizing coal at so-called low temperatures, dealing with the technology and economics of the process rather than with the design of equipment. The process used is that covered by the patents of C. B. Wisner, with improvements and changes made by the Pittsburgh Coal Carbonization Co. The important and novel feature of the process is the phenomenon of making the product in ball form (Fig. 1). Melting coal dust into smokeless solid fuel in an apparatus as simple as a revolving cylinder of ordinary mild steel has been proved to be practical. Furthermore, it has been found that the process has a wide application, for by applying a knowledge of why and how this balling action is accomplished, the apparatus can be designed and adapted to treat any coal that has a certain minimum agglutinating property. The operating plant is 20 miles west of Pittsburgh, adjacent to the Champion preparation plant of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. The coal used is cleaned minus 3/8 -in- or finer sizes. The products are low-tem-perature coke, tar and tar products. Present capacity is 7000 tons per month of low-temperature coke and 140,000 gal, of tar. There is no surplus gas for sale, and none of the light oils are stripped from the gas. The coke is marketed in two sizes, 1 to 2 in. and 1 to 6 in., through retail coal dealers for domestic con-sumption in hand-fired furnaces, and for fireplace fuel. The smaller size is bagged by dealers. Crude tar and many distillates and road tars are sold.

During the last half century, much time has been devoted to investigations of the effect of nitrogen on the physical properties of steel, but in all discussions of results there is considerable doubt as to the accuracy and interpretation of analyses. No conclusions concerning the effects of nitrogen on the physical properties of steel can be more reliable than the methods used for determining the quantities of nitrogen present. The work described in this paper endeavors to establish some additional conditions required by the customary distillation method for reliable and nccurate determinations. Results by a combustion method of analysis for total nitrogen content are presented; these indicate that all of the nitrogen in steel, exclusive of that contained in blowholes, may be determined by the distillation method. Based on these more sound and more reliable analyses, results havc been obtained that bear on the following divisions of the general subject, nitrogen in steel: Nitrification of steel by melting in nitrogen, nitrification of steel by heating in ammonia, decomposition of nitrified steel by heating, and thermal analysis of nitrified steel. Consideration of Two Methods of Analysis and Some Results The details of the distillation and combustion methods are chemical in character and of little interest to most readers. They are therefore described in an appendix. The distillation method is essentially that described by Hurum and Fay1 and was generally used throughout this work. The striking features of American Bessemer practice aré its large output and its low initial silicon and initial temperature. These are interdependent. Large outputs implies short blows and short intervals between blows. Short blows imply low silicon and fast blowing. Low silicon implies short intervals and fast blowing. Our blows are short because we have little silicon to remove, and because we remove it fast by supplying blast rapidly. We get enough heat even with little silicon, because our blows and the intervals between them are so short that relatively little heat escapes from our vessels. Were we to lengthen our intervals, or to blow more slowly, we would have to meet the increased loss of heat from our vessels, either by using more silicon, or by melting hotter, i.e., by burning more coke, in the blast-furnace or in the cupola. Finally, our short intervals imply powerful machinery, efficient organization, and extreme specialization and subdivision of labor, which can be profitable only when the output is large. Let, us now take these points up in more detail, first glancing at some examples of our large outputs, given in Table I., and of the composition of our iron. Output.—On presenting such results to some foreign metallurgists, I have been told, " Oh yes, we quite understand that. You really turn out no more steel than we do. As a matter of personal pride, your manager gets up a tremendous spurt for a day, or even a week, crowds on men wastefully, rushes through great quantities of metal, and then for months afterwards has to recuperate. The machinery has been strained ; the owner's money has been wasted ; the men have been prostrated—all to gratify the manager's vanity. Your average output is no larger than ours." Personal pride has, doubtless, played its part; without it we would still be savages, or apes, or mollusks, if you prefer. The use of minute boron additions to steel has been given considerable attention in recent years. Comparisons made between boron-free and boron-containing heats of otherwise identical analysis have indicated, beyond a doubt, the potent effect of boron for increasing hardenability. The actual hardenability increase has been expressed as a multiplying factor, or in terms of the percentage of other alloying elements boron might replace. The present study presents the results of a systematic survey of the use of boron as an addition to two types of alloyed steels and as a replacement for various percentages of molybdenum in these steels. Both cast and wrought steels of the two basic compositions were prepared. Molybdenum, because of its scarcity at the time the investigation was started, was selected as the element to be replaced by boron. Attention was also given to the effects of boron on other properties of the steels, particularly their notched-bar toughness, to investigate other advantages or limitations of this element as an alloy addition. Experimental Work Steels Investigated The two basic compositions used in this survey of boron as a replacement for molybdenum are given in Table I. THE 1944 Chairman of the Institute of Metals Division might be classed as metallurgically ambidextrous ; he is teacher of theory and practice of both nonferrous and ferrous metallurgy, and he is consultant on brass and on highspred steel. Arthur Phillips was born in Troy N.Y. and attended the New Haven Connecticut high school. Upon graduation he entered Yale, receiving a degree in metallurgy in 1913. At that time Professor Mathewson was starting his plan of '"co-operation with the metal industries in metallographic work at the Hammond Laboratory of the Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University, and Arthur Phillip, became the first co-operative graduate student, working in the laboratory of the Bridgeport Brass Co., and receiving his Masters of Science degree in 1915. A little later, when the department of metallurgy at Yale was expanded. Me. Phillips was appointed assistant professor. In 1928 he was made associate professor, and in 1934 he was promoted to full professor.

Instability of rock slopes may occur by failure along pre- existing structural discontinuities, by failure through intact material or by failure along a surface formed partly along discontinuities and partly through intact material. Although certain fundamental failure modes are recognized, the mechanisms of slope failure are varied and complex. Such mechanisms are governed by the engineering geology conditions of the rock mass, which are almost always unique to a particular site. An understanding of failure mechanisms requires a knowledge of the physical, mechanical and strength properties of the intact material and discontinuities which make up the rock mass, as well as the structural geology and hydrogeology. These engineering geology parameters also must be evaluated with respect to the slope geometry to determine failures which are kinematically possible. Only after obtaining a reasonable appreciation of the possible failure modes can a rational mechanical stability analysis be carried out. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional failure mechanisms should be considered in assessing the design of rock slopes. Simple analyses methods are used initially to identify those possible failures which could control slope stability. More complex and detailed analyses usually are required for a few critical failure modes which could control stability, or where a more complex type of failure mechanism is envisaged. Complex failure mechanisms are usually identified when assessing previous slope failures. More detailed information concerning slope geometry and engineering geology parameters must be acquired where analyses must be more rigorous.

A quantitative x-ray diffraction method has been developed for the analysis of alteration minerals in wallrock. Alteration data are plotted and contoured (analogous to geochemical data). Alteration trends outlined by this technique correlate closely with geochemical anomalies, and in some cases extend well beyond the perimeter of anomalous base metal values. "Monomineralic contouring," applied originally to porphyry-type mineralization, has been extended to other types of mineralization, including volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. Equipment and techniques used in the quantitative measurement of alteration mineralogy are discussed.

Falls of roof account for over 50% of the fatalities that occur in coal mines in the US. Thus, roof control is one of the more important phases of underground mining. In reality, the control of roof influences the system of mining and is a major determinant of the width and spacing of working places, operations at the mining face, ventilation control, and surface subsidence. Frequently, the control of roof is the largest single cost item. Roof control is a never-ending task, not only at the working face and throughout sections where men are working, but along haulways and air- ways that must be maintained for the life of the mine. This is because roof, even the best of roof, slowly deteriorates, so it must be frequently examined, with corrective support applied when needed. As coal is excavated, stresses are set up in the roof because the previous equilibrium is upset, resulting in pressures that cause fractures and slight movements that are frequently hard to detect. Unless the immediate roof, in the excavated area, is given support by artificial means, it might fall or there might be a succession of falls, varying from a thin scale to several feet, depending on the nature of the top. Exceptions to this are those rare mines, or sections of mines, with hard, strong, nonweathering roof that requires no support. GENERAL CLASSIFICATION OF ROOF There are two broad types of roof as far as support is concerned: the immediate roof above the coal and the main roof. Artificial support for mining purposes is only concerned with the immediate roof as nothing except large blocks of solid coal, or massive concrete, will support the main roof. The immediate roof is generally a few feet thick but can vary from inches to 6.1 m (20 ft) or more. There are examples of where there is no immediate roof as the massive main roof lies directly on the coal

The thermodynamic behavior of dilute solutions of copper, silver, and gold in liquid tin is not explained by current solution theories.1-3 The relative partial gram-atomic enthalpies, or heats of solution, of silver, gold, and platinum in liquid lead at 623°K have been measured in the investigation reported here. Their interpretation requires a modification of the regular-solution theory although lead-rich solutions may be expected to be simpler than tin-rich solutions. The liquid metal solution calorimeter used has been described.4 At the start of a run the bath consisted of 621 g of reagent-grade lead. Several calibrating additions of lead were made during a run; a value of 3.48 kcal per g-atom5 was taken for H623°K - H273°K Two runs were made with each of the solutes silver, gold, and platinum. Annealed wire samples of 99.999+ pct purity were used. Four to six samples each weighing 0.5 to 1,0 g were added from 273°K to the bath at 623°K and the associated heat effects were measured. The samples dissolved in approximately 3 min. No serious experimental difficulties were encountered. The heat effects of the additions in a run plotted against the average atom fraction of solute before and after each addition314 were linear functions of the concentration in lead of silver, gold, and platinum, respectively. By subtracting the difference between the heat contents of a solute element at 623° and. 273°K5 from the measuredheat effects, the partial gram-atomic enthalpy relative to the solid solute was obtained. The relativ: partial gram-atomic enthalpy at infinite dilution and the concentration dependence of the partial gram-atomic enthalpies obtained from the plots of vs atomic fraction x are listed in Table I. The relative partial gram-atomic enthalpy at infinite dilution of silver in lead of 5.46 kcal per g-atom at 623°K compares with values at 723°K of 5.74' and 5.765 kcal per g-atom. These data yield a temperature coefficient of 3.0 cal per g-atom-OK. The partial gram-atomic enthalpy at infinite dilution of gold in lead at 623°K is 0.89 kcal per g-atom compared with 0.85 kcal per g-atoms (obtained by extrapolation) and 0.95 kcal per g-atom.5 By combining these values for 623°K with those for several other temperatures5" the temperature coefficient of was found to be 3.2 cal per g-atom-OK. The Pu-Ce phase diagram was determined by differential thermal analysis, metallography, and elechm-nricroprobe analysis. The dingram is chararterized by a eutectic with extensive solid solubility in the cubic Phases of both cerium and plutonium. No intermediate phases were found. Cerium is soluble in e plutonium to 16.0 at. pet Ce at 626OC nnd in d plcltoniurn to 23.0 at. pet at 613 "C, decreasing to 17.5 at. pet at room temperature. No solubility in the a, ß, or ? phases was jound, and the mininum cerium required to stabilize 5 plutonium to room temperature is 3.2 at. pet. The maximum solubility of plutonium in 6 cerium is 19.5 at. pet at 721OC, and the maximum soluhility of plutonium in ? cerium is 34.5 at. pet. Invariant points in the system are: a) eutectic at 626oC, L16.5 = E Pu16.0 + y Ce65.5; b) peritectoid at613oC, e Pu13.5 -y Ce65.5- d Pu23.0. AS part of a program aimed at the determination of the phase equilibria in the Pu-Ce-Cu ternary system, preliminary investigations were made of the three binary systems. A survey of the Pu-Ce binary system by differential therma1 analysis indi- cated several areas of disagreement with the published diagram,' primarily in the shape of the liquidus surface. Consequently, a thorough investigation of the system was undertaken, and this report presents the results of the study. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Three methods of investigation were used: differential thermal analysis (DTA), metallography, and analysis with electron-microprobe X-ray analyzer (EMX). The EMX analysis was particularly useful for the determination of solvus lines. The DTA method was most useful for the determination of the liquidus curves. Metallography complemented both of these techniques. Materials. The cerium metal used for most of this work had a freezing point of 805°C. This material showed 15°C premelting, and was found metallographically to contain some unidentified in~lusions.2 The temperature of premelting is defined as the point at which the DTA curve breaks away from the base line, analogous to a curve obtained from a solid-solution alloy. Several compositions were prepared near the cerium end of the diagram with higher-purity material which had a freezing point of 800°C. etallographic analysis showed this material to be relatively free of inclusions and only 8°C premelting was observed. On the extreme fringe of' the great Appalachian coal-basin is a long narrow detached coal-field, which is, in some respects, one of the most important in the United States. This field, about 90 miles long by 2½ to 16 miles wide, extends from the southwest corner of Somerset county, Pennsylvania, through Allegany and Garrett counties, Maryland, Mineral, Grant and Tucker counties, West Virginia, into Randolph county, West Virginia. In this distance four distinct sub-districts are recognized, the Wellersburg in Pennsylvania, the Cumberland-Georges creek in Maryland, and the Elk Garden and the Upper Potomac in West Virginia. The output of coal from the whole field including steam, domestic, smithing and coking-coal of the best quality, is about 4,500,000 tons annually. It is the nearest to tide-water of all the bituminous coal-fields which supply the great coal-markets of the Northern Atlantic seaboard ;
