INTRODUCTION The objective of this chapter is to inform the industry, as well as the public, of the challenges in dealing with problems associated with air and water contamination by coal preparation plants. The need for an informed industry is most important. It is hoped that some contribution may be given to a more efficient and economical approach to the problems of plant waste contaminants at individual plants. The problem has many facets, and consideration should be given to specific areas before any significant problems develop at a given plant. It is then possible to have a reasoned approach before the pressures of an emergency environment force hasty and incomplete solutions. It will be necessary to anticipate these problems in the design of new preparation plants, and advance consideration should be given to all problems concerned with contaminants.

THE recirculating furnace is primarily a heating apparatus of the convection type in which the heat-absorbing surfaces are heated by a mixture of fresh products of combustion and a portion of the combustion gases that have already given off a part of their heat in their previous passage over the heat-absorbing surfaces. In its basic conception, the recirculating furnace can be considered as a closed thermal system in which the heat-absorbing surfaces are .constantly swept by a fixed quantity of products of combustion at a given initial temperature with the gases being constantly returned to the furnace and reheated before they again enter the heating zone. Gases equal in amount to that produced by the fuel burned to reheat the circulating gases are constantly ejected from the system to the stack. The recirculating furnace is the most suitable apparatus for heating by convection where low furnace temperatures must be maintained and where only a small portion of the available heat is taken out of the gases, particularly where the maximum allowable furnace temperature is low and where the final temperature of the gases is only a few hundred degrees below their initial temperature. In such cases, recirculation not only provides a method of reducing the rather high combustion temperatures of the fuel when burned without a large amount of excess air, but, by returning to the furnace the heat content of the gases at their final temperature, recovers a large portion of heat that otherwise would have been lost through the stack.

INTRODUCTION Numerous deposits of lead and zinc sulfides, often accompanied by barite and fluorite, occur in carbonate host rocks throughout central and eastern United States. So similar are the deposits in broad general characteristics that they long have been classified as Mississippi Valley type. They differ widely, however, in details such as metal ratios, age of host rock, type of ore-bearing structure, and probable time of mineralization. The theories developed to explain the source and transport of the metals are many and are known to all. The deposits have been termed telethermal on the basis of their presumably shallow occurrence and the attempt to relate the metals to the classic hydro- thermal sequence. 1t is now recognized that deposits of this type can occur at any depth; the only depth limitation is thickness of the sedimentary section. Ideas on the source of the metals also have changed, A rapidly growing body of evidence suggests that the metals were brought by concentrated brines from nearby sedimentary basins. The hypothesis preferred today by many geologists postulates that the metals were deposited during the course of normal sedimentation in depositional basins of miogeosynclinal or orthogeosynclinal type. At some time after deposition of the sediments, the metals were carried out of the basins by migrating brines; the brines moved laterally and upward into structurally high areas; they entered any reservoir-like structure, either primary or secondary in origin, that happened to be available; in this reservoir, possibly in a sulfur-rich environment, the metals were precipitated as ore minerals.

WHEN we began the study of blast furnace slags we limited our work at first to a study of those slags containing only lime, alumina and silica. In our paper1 on some of the results of this first work, the solubility of. sulfur in slags containing no magnesia was reported and the question of sulfur solubility and slag viscosity discussed. There has been, for a long time, a very great difference of opinion among metallurgists as to .the effect of magnesia in blast furnace slags, and the literature is full of expressions of the most contrary opinions on the subject. As a result, our next publication2 developed the constitution of slags considered as a four-component system, silica-alumina-lime-magnesia, and advanced an explanation of slag structure which accorded with the facts and with scientific theory. The present paper continues our study of the general subject of slags. As blast furnace slags are included in the silica-alumina-lime-magnesia system, which is a particular case of four-component solutions, we have determined that there are 22 components (Table 1), which may enter into the silica-alumina-lime-magnesia system and that 10 or 12 of these components may be present in blast furnace slags which are within the ordinary ranges of composition. To have a very definite conception of the behavior of these components in a slag, we have developed the theory of the cooling of a four-component solution from the liquid state to the solid and the conclusions that we obtained have been made use of in this paper. On account of the importance of the four oxides and 18 compounds which enter into the silica-alumina-lime-magnesia system, some method of calculating the percentages of the various compounds that are present in the slag when the percentages of the oxides are given, seemed very desirable and we develop a method later herein for doing this, and finally we give illustrations of

FOR alloys which are in practice heat treated to obtain increased strength, such as steels, duralumin, copper-beryllium, and others, the treatment usually involves heating to a relatively high temperature. At such temperatures the grain size of the product is largely determined by grain growth. Even in metals and alloys annealed merely to relieve work hardening, recrystallization is generally followed by a certain amount of grain growth. Thus, effective grain size control, which is often of great practical importance in manufacturing processes, depends on the grain growth behavior of the material used. Despite its importance, grain growth has been the subject of few investigations of a fundamental nature. The term "grain growth" has been used to designate a group of related, but distinctly different, phenomena. The two most important and best known of this group are illustrated by the following example. Curve a in Fig r shows the increase of the average grain size of a copper-beryllium alloy, containing 2 pct Be and 0.15 pct Co, with increasing annealing temperature. The time of annealing was 2 hrs. The grain size was quite uniform in all specimens. The results of a similar experiment with an alloy containing 2 pct Be and 0.31 pct Co are shown by curve b. It is seen that for any annealing temperature below T. the grain size was smaller than in the previous case. Grain growth became slower with the higher Co content. This "inhibiting" effect of the higher Co addition was associated with the appearance in the microstructure of fine, light blue particles of the CoBe phase. Up to temperature T. the structure of the inhibited alloy (curve b) was just as uniform as the structures represented by curve a. However, after annealing at T, or at higher temperatures, the inhibited alloy showed some extremely large grains (much larger than the grain sizes developed by the uninhibited alloy with low Co content) mixed with the small grains according to curve b. The presence of these mixed or "duplex" structures is indicated in Fig 11 by the vertical lines branching off curve b. The type of grain growth occurring in uninhibited Cu-Be alloys (curve a) has has been most frequently and best investigated in brass. This type has been designated as "normal grain growth," while the grain growth phenomena occurring in inhibited materials were, at times, referred to as "abnormal grain growth." However, since the latter term has been applied occasionally to the phenomenon of critical recrystallization, which also results in large grains although by an entirely different mechanism, in the present paper a different nomenclature has been adopted in order to avoid confusion. Solution mining of magnesium salts (Carnallite and Bischofite) is taking place near Veendam, in the northeast Netherlands. The magnesium salts are used for the production of magnesia sinter, used as a base material for the manufacture of refractory bricks for furnaces. This paper gives, first, an introduction to the operational procedure followed in Veendam, with the emphasis on some of the unique aspects, and then discusses rock-mechanical aspects of the cavity behaviour. The creep behaviour of magnesium salts is described, and Finite Element calculations on cavity stability and potential surface subsidence are discussed.

This mine is operated at 4000 to 4500 tons daily through a single shaft, with one rock hoist and one senice hoist. Latest shaft construction is concrete with wooden dividers. Economics of drifters and air-leg drills are compared, as well as costs of shrinkage and sub-level stoping. Economy of large haulage equipment and underground crushing is shown. THE property of Kerr-Addison Gold Mines is located in the Larder Lake district of Ontario about 3 miles from the Quebec boundary on the highway between Kirkland Lake and Noranda. It is roughly 320 miles due north of Toronto and 365 miles north of Buffalo, N. Y. The property was staked in 1906 and after several development efforts finally came into continuous production at 500 tons per day in 1937. In 1939 the daily tonnage -was increased to 1200 and in 1941 to 2100 tons. At the end of the war, because of the shortage of labor, tonnage was down to 1100 tons per day, rising to 2200 in February 1947. A further plant expansion inaugurated in 1946 was completed by December 1948, bringing the capacity of the mine and mill to a production rate of 4000 tons per day. Current production, with 880 men employed, is 4400 tons per day. Changes in mining methods and equipment, required by the recently completed expansion program, have yielded interesting comparative results, some of which are described in this paper. Hoisting of ore and waste from the mine, as well as all service facilities for handling men and supplies underground, are provided for in a single vertical five-compartment shaft. Ore and waste are hoisted in 12½-ton skips in balance by a 14-ft diam hoist with drums 115 in. wide, grooved for 2?-in. wire ropes. This hoist, with a total rope pull of 85,000 lb, was designed to operate at a speed of 2600 ft per min to a depth of 4000 ft, hoisting 15 tons of ore in each skip. It is amplidyne-controlled and powered with dual drive dc motors of 2250-hp each, through flexible couplings to two pinion shafts, one on each side of the main gear. Each motor has a peak load rating of 4500-hp at point of greatest duty. Direct current power to the hoist motors is supplied from a motor generator set consisting of a 5000-hp synchronous motor driving two 1750-kw dc generators. The loading pockets used so far are at depths of 1500 and 2725 ft respectively. Consequently the present hoisting speed is 2000 ft per min and the skips capacity only 12½ tons. Now that the shaft has been deepened the new pockets at 3934 ft will be increasingly used so that the speed and the skip size will be increased up to original specifications as required. Some difficulty in meeting the required hoisting cycle is expected because of the shape of the skips. As now in use the cross-sectional dimensions of the inside of the skip are 4 ft 6 in. x 3 ft 8 in. To hold 121/2 tons, therefore, they are 14 ft 10 in. deep. Since the skips are the conventional overturning or Kim-berley type, considerable hoisting time is lost in retardation in entering the headframe dump and in acceleration when leaving. It is expected that to obtain the specified tonnage from this hoist when the skip size is increased to 15 tons it may be necessary to resort to bottom dump skips. This type of skip could reduce considerably the present excessive acceleration and retardation times. Analyses of the skip-hoisting operation are made monthly, and every effort is made to reduce controllable delays. For a nine-month period in 1951 such an analysis shows that the hoist was in operation 92.5 pct of the available time, which was allotted as shown in Table I. Overall hoisting costs, cage and skip, for the year 1951, averaged $0.168 per ton of ore milled. The inherently sluggish nature of the reactions involving sulfide minerals, particularly molybdenite, in aqueous solutions under ambient flotation conditions make their investigation complicated and difficult. Since the physicochemical nature of sulfides is known to be controlled by electrochemical reactions, a number of attempts have been made in the past to study sulfide mineral-collector interactions through rest potential and electrode polarization measurements. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the interaction of potassium diethyldithiophosphate (KDTP) with molybdenite. In the present investigation of the interaction of KDTP at the molydenite surface, molybdenite electrode rest potential measurements and electrode polarization behavior were experimentally determined under various solution conditions. The standard reduction potential for the equilibrium between dithiophosphate ions (DTP-) and bis(diethoxythiophosphoryl)disulfide (DTP) [(DTP). + 2e :i7-± 2DTP- (1)] can be evaluated from the electrode rest potential measurements on a platinum electrode in deoxygenated KDTP solutions saturated with freshly prepared (DTP)2. This paper summarizes recent developments in modeling of underground coal slurry haulage networks to determine optimum design and operating parameters. The model presented is based on a stochastic dynamic program¬ming formulation. It is applicable in any typical room-and-pillar or longwall mining configuration commonly practiced in the US. The formulation and structure of the model is general enough to handle design problems involving more than one face and mining method. Given the stochastic operating characteristics and a system layout, the model can be used to determine the equipment configuration and operating regimes that minimize the overall unit cost of coal haulage.

IN THE Lake Superior District, the air indoors must be heated continuously during eight months of the year and occasionally during the remaining months. Incident with mining in this district, therefore, there is need for heating many of the buildings connected with these operations. In addition to the mine buildings, that is, shops, engine, houses, offices, change houses, etc., such public buildings as schools, library, and theater, when close to the mines, are often supplied from the mine heating mains. At the Copper Range Company's mines, Champion, Trimountain and Baltic, the heating surface thus supplied from the mine mains is over 50,000 sq. ft. (4645 sq. m.) which requires a steam consumption, at times, of 18,000 lb. (8165 kg.) per hour, or the equivalent of a rate of over 50 tons of coal per day (were live steam used). This figure is based on a consumption of 1/3 lb. per square foot of heating surface during the coldest weather, and provided the system is not wasting steam by blowing it to the atmosphere or into the return line on account of leaky traps, which so often is the case. Under the latter conditions, steam consumptions of three to four times the above rate are not uncommon. This shows that the cost of heating is of enough importance to be given serious consideration, especially at this time of rising prices of fuel. The power and heating value of exhaust steam are appreciated by most engineers, and its application for such purposes is general. At our stamp mills, the exhaust from the stamps is used to operate low-pressure turbines, thus reducing the former water rate per horsepower developed by more than 50 per cent.

INTRODUCTION THE high temperatures encountered in the operation of jet engines have imposed most drastic requirements upon the materials used in their construction. There are two different approaches to the materials problem connected with the design of parts in contact with high temperature gases. The first approach is to use a material which will perform satisfactorily at a temperature comparable to that of the gas. The second approach is to use a cooling system so that the material is maintained at a temperature appreciably lower than that of the gas. Besides the conventional method .of cooling by means of a liquid in contact with the material exposed to a high rate of heat transfer, a less orthodox method consists of making the part to be cooled of a porous material, so that the cooling fluid can be forced through the pores. In this scheme, the temperature of the coolant moving in a direction opposite to that of the heat flow increases gradually while passing through the porous material, and the coolant forms a protective layer on the surface exposed to heat. This method, referred to as "sweat cooling," was proposed at the jet Propulsion Laboratory in September 1944, and the experimental work on the preparation of porous metals was started early in 1945. The sweat cooling method opens new lines of research in powder metallurgy by extending the field of application of porous metals. The porous metals available at the present time are used mostly as bearings or filters, and a rather limited number of alloys are made for these applications. In addition, the fabrication of bearings or filters does not require a very dose control of the permeability, while in the case of sweat cooling such a control is of primary importance. In designing a sweat cooled part it is imperative to assure a given rate of flow of coolant under certain conditions of pressure drop. Generally, the proper pressure drop and the rate of flow of coolant are deduced from heat transfer and design considerations, and consequently the permeability of the porous metal to be used is also determined. It is therefore necessary for the designer to have available a continuous series of porous metals covering a range of permeability as wide as possible. Contrary to the requirements established in the fabrication of filters, the actual pore size of a porous metal intended for sweat cooling is of little consequence, except for its effect on permeability. The tensile strength is likely to be of great importance for some applications. Since the tensile strength of a porous alloy decreases with increasing porosity, an important problem is to develop porous alloys having the maximum permeability with minimum porosity.

IN 1903, T. M. and E. H. Alvord, of Marblemount, Wash., built a soapstone-grinding mill in the Skagit River Valley and are reported to have produced "ground talc" during 1904 and 1905, shipping to the paper mills in Wisconsin. Between 1916 and 1920, the Western Talc Co. built and operated a talc-grinding mill north of Mondovi, on the banks of the Spokane River, in eastern Washington, and sold powdered talc to the Inland Empire Paper Co. of Spokane. ? The most active develop-ment in recent years has been by two companies in the Skagit Valley-the Skagit Talc Company, Inc., which has been sawing soapstone block for the soda-recovery furnaces of the pulp and paper companies, and the Asbestos-Talc Products of Washington, Inc., at Burlington, which has been mining and dry-grinding a soft serpentine for the structural filler and insulation trade. Many prospects have been opened in the northern part of the state on both sides of the Cascade Mountains, and these activities undoubtedly are the forerunner of an industry that promises to attain considerable magnitude in the North Pacific States. At the present time, talc is imported from California for use as paper filler, and soapstone block from Virginia for use in the soda-recovery furnaces. A small market has been created locally for tailor and foundry:, pencils, stove grills, and block soapstone for art objects. The results of the present study, as yet incomplete, indicate that the use as a refractory and as a ceramic filler and flux can be expanded.

Of the several extensive deposits of brown iron-ore in Cuba, including those of Mayari and Moa, that of Mayari was the first to be systematically explored, and was selected as the scene of the first operations in the development of this class of ore. Construction-work, begun in the spring of 1907, involved the building of 16 miles of stantlard-gauge railroad and two large double-track inelines, the installation of milling-machinery, a nodulizing-plant, power-plant, shops and shipping-facilities, and the dredging of an extensive basin for deep-draught vessels. Unusual weather-conditions delayed the completion of portions of this work so that the entire plant was not in operation until December, 1900.
