TEE purpose of this paper-is to describe a new process for the refining of secondary copper-base metals and a specially designed high-temperature electric-resistor furnace used in the process for the distillation of zinc from these metals. The process was used for the conversion of nickel silver to cupronickel and to recover the zinc content in metallic form. It also proved applicable and economical for the treatment of scrap brass for separating and reclaiming the copper and zinc. The relatively large furnace developed for the distillation of zinc is described in detail, for it made economically possible the direct recovery of metallic zinc from scrap brass, which is a new step in the processing of such material. Considerable interest has been shown in the utilization of the distillation furnace for other metallurgical processes, where it is of advantage to operate in a controlled neutral or reducing atmosphere, or to avoid having the processed metal in contact with refractories other than carbon, or to operate at temperatures between 3000 and 4000°F. PURPOSE OF DEVELOPMENT It was recognized early in the war effort that nickel would become a critical metal, therefore all nickel stock and alloys containing relatively high percentages of nickel were frozen immediately. Among these alloys were considerable quantities of various grades of nickel silver, an alloy containing copper, nickel, zinc, and in some grades lead, also minor amounts of iron, manganese and other constituents. At the time there was no existing plant or process to eliminate the zinc, lead, and minor constituents so as to convert this metal to cupronickel, one of the important alloys needed by the U. S. Navy for condenser parts. Therefore the Bureau of Industrial Conservation of the War Production Board requested the executives of the leading nonferrous metal companies to have their metallurgical staffs study the problem of converting this metal to cupronickel conforming to U. S. Navy Specification 44T40. The composition specified therein is as follows: nickel, 29 to 32 per cent; zinc, 1.00; iron, 0.00 to 0.60; lead, 0.05; tin, 1.20; manganese, 0.00 to 1.00; total of other elements (maximum), 0.50; copper, remainder. The problem in converting these alloys to cupronickel was the elimination of zinc, lead, iron, manganese, and other elements without appreciable loss of nickel to slags or other by-products. Revere Copper and Brass Incorporated, through its Research and Development Department, undertook to solve this problem. A Government-owned plant was built at Rome, N. Y., and there the con- version was successfully made.

This paper describes the procedures and results of a series of experiments conducted to determine the depressing effect of sodium, calcium and magnesium ions on the amine flotation of quartz. It also presents an analysis of the experimental results by the electrical double layer theory. The flotation of quartz with primary amines has been practiced on a large scale in the phosphate industry for many years. Some glass sand —and recently iron ore — has also been treated by this flotation technique. These applications have been highly successful and demonstrate that a complete mastery of all the details of an operation is not needed to achieve an economic success. There are times, though, when it becomes important to recognize, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the effects of some previously ignored variables. The effects of cations on the amine flotation process, particularly those ions that contribute to water hardness and abound in sea water, are a case in point. In conjunction with the development of a cationic flotation reagent for separating quartz from apatite, it became necessary to quantify the influence of calcium and magnesium on the separation. In order to strengthen and broaden current understanding of the flotation process, the results were interpreted by means of the electrical double layer theory. THEORETICAL BACKGROUND Assume that, given the same equipment, procedure, and time, the recovery of quartz by amine flotation is a function of only the adsorption density of aminium ions in the Stern layer, i.e., that for any given adsorption density there exists only one recovery percentage. The principal ore deposits of Arizona are in the southern, cen-tral, and western portions of the state, which physiographically are part of the Basin and Range province, southwest of the Colo-rado Plateau (Pl. I). The Basin and Range province is characterized by numerous subparallel mountain ranges separated by plains or valleys. Most of these ranges trend northwest to north, parallel to the margin of the Colorado Plateau; but in southeastern Arizona, southern New Mexico, and northeastern Sonora, they trend northward, transverse too the edge of the Plateau. The mountains rise abruptly from plains or valleys, the margins of which in many places are pediments cut on hard rock. Some of the plains form closed basins (bolsons, playas), but most of them are drained. The Basin and Range province in Arizona is divisible into the Mountain Region and the Desert Region4 (Pls. I and II). The Mountain Region forms a belt 60 to 100 miles wide that contains most of the large ore deposits. Its longest range measures about 55 miles, the widest 20 miles, and the highest peak more than 10,000 feet above sea level or 7,000 feet above adjacent valleys or plains. Broad plain-forming valleys are exceptional, but several with maximum widths of 20 to more than 30 miles appear in the southeastern portion. In the Desert Region the mountains are relatively low, narrow, serrated, and steep, with sharply angular profiles. There are a few exceptionally large ranges of which the longest measures nearly 100 miles and the widest 18 miles. The highest peak is some 7,000 feet above sea level, and the maximum local relief amounts to about 5,400 feet. Broad and comparatively low desert plains form 50 to 75 per cent of the area.

Kinetic studies were made of the reactions of tantalum with oxygen, nitrogen, and air at 400o to 1500°C. The tantalum-oxygen reaction is linear from 500° to 1250°C. The tantalum-nitrogen reaction follows a cubic rate law at 400° to 700°C and a parabolic rate law at 800" to 1475°C. The reaction behavior in air is initially parabolic followed by a transition to linear behavior. In the search for high-temperature materials, considerable interest is being shown in the refractory metal, tantalum. It is the third highest melting metal with a melting point of 2996°C. Also, tantalum has excellent ductility, making it one of the most workable refractory metals. In considering high-temperature applications of tantalum, the oxidation kinetics of the metal must be known. Such information also serves as a basis for the development of corrosion resistant tantalum-base alloys. Therefore, this study was made to investigate the reaction of tantalum with air, nitrogen, and oxygen. LITERATURE Several oxides of tantalum have been reported. The pentoxide, Taz05, is the only oxide of tantalum whose identity has been established. A high-temperature modification, aTa2Os, has been reported by several investigators.1-4 A low-temperature phase, ßTa2O5, undergoes an allotropic transformation at 1320o to 1350oC. 5-8 Four other oxides of tantalum have been reported. The oxides TaO2, TaO, and Ta4O have been reported by schonberg.9 A suboxide Ta2O, was observed by Wasilewski 6. However, the presence of oxides lower than Ta2O5 is questioned by Lagergren and Magneli.7 In oxidation studies, vermilyeal0 and Peterson, et al.,12 reported one possible phase intermediate between Ta and Ta2O5. Only Ta2O5 was formed in the tantalum air reaction, as reported by Michae1.l3 Several studies have been made on the kinetics of the tantalum-oxygen reaction. vermilyeal4 investigated the range 50° to 300°C and found that the rate of growth of a thin adherent oxide film could be described by the Cabrera-Mott theory. Gulbransen and Andrew15,18 studied the reaction kinetics of tantalum in oxygen pressure of 1/10 atm at 250° to 450°C. At all temperatures the reaction followed the parabolic rate law for periods up to two hours. The oxidation behavior in the range 500" to 1000°C was found to be linear at oxygen pressures of 0.2 to 600 psi according to Peterson. et al.l1 At very low pressures (1 x 10-3 to 2 X lo-' mm of Hg) Gebhardt and seghezzi17 reported linear oxidation at 800° to 1500°C. The reaction of tantalum with air is similar to the reaction with oxygen. Studies have been made by Waber, et a1.,12 and Michae1.l3 Two nitrides of tantalum, TaN and Ta2N are known. Their structures have been determined by Brauer and Zapp 18,19 The tantalum-nitrogen reaction kinetics have been investigated by Gulbransen and Andrews. 15, 16 The reaction follows the parabolic rate law at 500° to 850°C at a nitrogen pressure of 1/10 ,atm. At the same temperature, the tantalum-nitrogen reaction is much slower than the tantalum-oxygen reaction. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Material— The material used in this study was high-purity, electron-beam-melted tantalum obtained from the Temescal Metallurgical Corp. Although present electrolytic zinc manufacturing processes are aimed at the direct wet process recovery of the metal, and, with this end in view, several industrial scale patents have been applied for during the last few years, the object of this paper is to enhance the possible metallurgical interest in the conventional recovery of zinc and other metals from leaching residues. Therefore, its main end is the description and discussion of the recovery process of zinc, lead and cadmium from leaching residues. Fundamentally, the process consists of the following: Flotation processing to recover the non-roasted blende still contained in the residues. Pyrometallurgical processing of flotation tails in low-shaft furnaces (kilns) and open-flame rotating furnaces and the ensuing recovery of zinc, lead and cadmium as a mixture of their oxides through volatilization.

THIS paper is not the result of recent research with regard to any particular feature of iron metallurgy, blast-furnace practice or mechanical engineering. It is rather a series of notes with regard to contemporaneous progress in blast-furnace construction and operation, together with some suggestions as to changes and improvements that seem to be desirable. On April 1, 1930, a committee of the Chicago District Blast Furnace and Coke Association presented to that association a rather ambitious study of blast-furnace equipment, together with recommendations for the design of construction of a complete blast-furnace unit for the production of 1000 tons of pig iron per day. This report represented the result of months of study by members of the committee, all of whom were actively engaged in operation or design of blast-furnace plants. It is natural, therefore, that comments on the present state of the art should take this 1000-tons furnace, as recommended by the Association, as a basis for comparison with corresponding features of construction or design. See Table 1. In looking through this report at the present time, the significant difference is in the nature of the gas-washing equipment that today would be specified. In other respects, the installation would remain generally very much as it was outlined in 1930. The change in furnace dimensions would be very slight and of no especial significance, except with respect to changes in stock-line diameter, of which more will be said hereafter. The high-efficiency stove as developed by various designers is thoroughly described within this report, and few changes have taken place since. Blowing equipment shows refinement and reflects the improvement in steam engineering. THERE is today no proven continuous mining machine that can be used under all the varying conditions found in most bituminous coal mines. During the last five years, however, both the machines and methods of using them have been improved. Coal operators can now exercise a fair degree of selectivity, except those who must struggle with thick and hard partings and operate in seams less than 40 in. thick. It must be realized, then, that more than one type of continuous miner may be used advantageously in the same coal mine. Although this appears to violate the standardization generally sought after, the gain can more than offset added maintenance and, to a lesser degree, operating problems.

WET processes for the extraction of copper from its ores have of late attracted much attention, especially in Europe, where the use of oupriferous iron-pyrites as a' source of sulphur prevails. These processes present an additional interest, when, as is often the case, the copper-ore's to be treated contain one or both of the precious metals, since the complete separation of these from copper, either in the dry or the moist way, is, as is well known, one of the difficult problems of metallurgy. The principal wet processes hitherto in use for the extraction of copper from its ores, may be included under three classes : I. Those in which the copper in snlphuretted ores is rendered soluble in water by calcining them, after a preliminary roasting which removes the greater part of their sulphur, with a portion of common salt, by which the copper is converted into a chloride (Long-maid and Henderson), or with sulphate of soda, by which sulphate of copper is formed (Monnier). Allied to these is the method by which a portion of the copper is got as soluble sulphate by roasting without addition, a process which is sometimes modified and rendered more complete by re-roasting the lixiviated residues with the addition of a portion of raw sulphuretted ore (Bankart). II. Those methods in which free chlorhydric or sulphuric acid is used to dissolve the copper- from oxidized or roasted ores. These, while simple and efficient, are too costly, except in certain localities where chlorhydric acid is a waste product. Related to them is the plan which consists in exposing the oxidized and moistened ores to the slow action of sulphurous acid mixed with air, by which a soluble sulphate of copper is formed. It has been proposed to decompose the solutions of sulphate or chloride of copper by sulphuretted hydrogen, thus separating the copper as sulphide, and using the liberated acid to dissolve fresh portions of oxidized copper. It is, however, the almost universal practice to throw down the copper from its solutions, however obtained, in the metallic state by the use of iron, either scrap-iron or iron-sponge; although in some instances

Lime and dicalcium-silicate crucibles were equilibrated with molten iron and liquid slags containing iron oxide and small amounts of sulfur. The oxygen content of metal, iron oxide activities, and desulfurization values of the slags were determined in the temperature range 1530 to 1700°C. The influence of magnesia in the slag and the temperature dependence of the solubility of lime in liquid iron oxide and the ferric oxide content were established. The temperature contour of the liquidus surface of iron-silicate slags saturated with lime and dicalcium silicate was also established at 1600°C. THE importance of the role that slag composition plays in the refining of steel has been known for many years. Numerous studies have been made using actual plant data in order to establish the relationship between the composition of the slag and metal during the refining of a heat of liquid steel. These results rarely represent equilibrium conditions since completion of the various chemical reactions involved in steelmaking is seldom realized. In order to establish quantitatively the equilibrium conditions existing between the slag and metal, several laboratory studies have been conducted in the past 20 years to determine the reactions important in slag control. These investigations have included studies of simple liquid basic and acid slags as well as more complex slag systems which approach those commonly found during the refining of a heat of steel. Since most of the previous studies of simple basic iron-oxide slags equilibriated with molten iron were made in magnesia crucibles, it was not possible to establish the distribution of sulfur and oxygen between molten iron and slags consisting only of the three essential components, lime, silica, and iron oxide. This investigation was undertaken to establish the equilibrium conditions for simple lime-iron oxide and lime-silica-iron oxide slags. Accordingly, it was expedient to prepare crucibles both of lime and dicalcium silicate to establish the equilibrium conditions between molten iron and iron-oxide slags saturated with the refractory materials and free from other components. The only other studies of the equilibrium between molten iron and lime-saturated slags are those of Fischer and vom Ende, 1, 2 in which the solubility of oxygen was determined in an air atmosphere. DEVELOPMENT of the lime industry- in Ste. Genevieve County began in a crude way in 1840. According to information furnished by the Missouri Bureau of Geology, in the early days small vertical kilns built of stone were used, and wood was the fuel. Modern development began in 1904 when one company introduced steel shells lined with firebrick. Within a few years two more companies erected similar plants, and in 1925 a fourth company began operations. Thus there are today four lime companies at Ste. Genevieve, all operating at high capacity and with a gradually increasing production. GEOLOGY The limestone of Ste. Genevieve County, which has the chemical composition and purity required for lime burning, is the upper 80 or 90 ft. of Spergen formation. The Missouri Bureau of Geology, in its geological map of Ste. Genevieve County, gives the Spergen formation a total thickness of 160 ft., but only the upper portion is pure enough for lime burning, with an average raw-stone analysis of 98.7 per cent CaC03; 0.35 Si02; 0.3 R203; 0.35 MgCO3; 0.3 S03. The Spergen, one member of the Meramac group, Iowa series, of the Mississippian system, underlies an area approximately 12 miles long north and south, by 5 miles wide east and west (Fig. 1) in Ste. Genevieve County. The entire eastern two-thirds of Ste. Genevieve County is sedimentary, the formations dipping gently toward the east on an average grade of about 4 per cent, or 2 ½ º. Thus the outcrops of the various sedimentaries run approximately north and south. A line running west from Ste. Genevieve crosses the outcrops of the sedimentaries, ranging from the top of the Mississippian to the Ozarkian geological system in a space of 12 miles. Thus with the gentle dip of 2 ½ º the 160-ft. thickness of the Spergen formation stretches out in its outcrop so that it is approximately one mile

Preparation of coal begins at the face in underground mines or in the pit with surface mines. Impurities in raw coal can be in the seam itself or in extraneous material taken in mining from the roof or bottom. Raw coal is prepared only to the extent that is necessary to make the product salable. Over 60% of all coal production is processed to some extent in cleaning plants. For underground mines the proportion cleaned is 72% as compared to 42% from surface and 15% from auger mines. Coal supplied for coking purposes is nearly all upgraded by washing, while for the largest market, electric power generation, a high proportion is shipped as a raw product with processing, in whole or in part, only as necessary when excess impurities are mined with the coal. This chapter will deal primarily with plants that process or wash coal to some extent and only incidently with mines shipping raw run-of-mine coal crushed to a top size of, usually, 2 to 4 in., with little, if any, other treatment. ECONOMICS OF COAL PREPARATION During the past decade, major changes have occurred affecting the market, profit, and long-rang planning of the coal industry. Mining companies have become "partners" with consumers at many new and some old mines, both for steam and metallurgical coals. Coal properties have become "assigned" tonnages at mutually agreed upon conditions and prices. Lower unit-train tariffs have been instrumental in helping coal markets to compete against oil and atomic energy. Cod prices for power plants are still on a Btu (British thermal unit) basis but with more emphasis on sulfur content. For metallurgical coal, the lower and medium volatile coals are in demand and the price rises, generally, as the volatile percentage is lower. Moisture affects the Btu value of coal almost the same as ash content, but dusty conditions during loading and unloading are no longer accept-

Tlze green electroluminescence occurring at liquid-nitvogen temperature in epitaxial gallium phosphide diodes is exarnined using the donor dopants silicon and sulfur. Zinc is used as the p-type diffusant. Two tt~ain peaks are found, namely til 0.56 and 0.535 p. The intensity of the gYeen peak occurring at 0.56 is found to oary as -4"' wlzere Jf is the forward current density and to first order appears to be dependent on the concet~tvation of ionized donovs. Tile vadintive lifetinze fov this process is -10-'sec. The intensity of the 0.56-p lu~ninescence is nt least several ovdevs of magnitude greate,, at liquid-nitvogen temperature than that noted jor the 0.538 radiation for current densities up to about 35 amp per sq cm. ThE development of high-purity, large single crystals of epitaxially grown gallium phosphide is the ultimate aim of the studies to be reported. While a number of papers and reviews' have been presented on properties of gallium phosphide grown from gallium solution and from the melt, less attention has been paid to the properties of epitaxial gallium phosphide grown from the vapor. In the studies to be reported we have examined the effects of shallow donor impurities, primarily silicon and sulfur, at liquid-nitrogen temperature, on both the electrical and green electroluminescent properties of carefully characterized single-crystal epitaxial Gap. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES A) Material Preparation and Properties. The samules used in this investigation were single-crystal n-type epitaxial gallium phosphide. he single crystals were synthesized from the elements by vapor transport and epitaxial deposition on single-crystal gallium arsenide substrates. Typical transport agents used were chlorides. The growth procedures are described in more detail in Ref. 2. The samples were grown in the (111) orientation and had thicknesses up to 480 . Following the growth, the GaAs substrate was removed from the epitaxial Gap by etching in nitric acid. The Hall effect and resistivity of these n-type samples were measured as a function of temperature and analyzed for impurity content and compared with spectroscopic emission analysis. The results are given in greater detail in Ref. 3 but a summary is noted in Table I. In Table I, AED denotes the donor ionization energy, Nd is the donor impurity concentration, lvA is the acceptor impurity concentration, NI is the total impurity concentration, Rip vs temperature is the measured Hall mobility-temperature relationship from liquid nitrogen to about 400"K, n(77"K) is the measured carrier concentration at liquid nitrogen, and R/p(77'~) is the measured Hall mobility at liquid nitrogen. Good agreement is noted between electrical and emission analysis for the major donor impurity, silicon, in the two materials where it is a major constituent. In the case of the two samples SC90-6 and AP138-3(111) B which were sulfur-doped the ionization energy found from the electrical data is in good agreement with that reported for sulfur.4 The acceptor impurities are not known, although from the presence of magnesium in the samples as indicated by emission analysis and its known role as an acceptor in GaP,4 magnesium could be present as an acceptor. Similarly, since silicon is known to be an amphoteric impurity4 it may also be present as an acceptor in the Gap.* The *A small band has been noted at 0.625 11 in samples SC90-6, SC76-4, and SC77-4, suggesting according to Ref. 5 that sillcon could be present as an acceptor In these samples since these authors have found this peak to represent a donor-silicon emission. presence of calcium deduced from emission analysis is not correlatable with the electrical analysis and its presence as an electrically active impurity should be questioned. B) Sample Preparation and Diode Fabrication. The original slices were of the order of 2 sq cm in area witi the (111)B face up. The material was cleaved and sectioned and the best pieces selected (i.e., those which visually appeared to have the least strain and defects). The samples were polished, lightly etched, and cleaned in trichloroethylene. Zinc was diffused in a closed tube at 800°C to form a p-n junction. Diodes were made from these samples. The depth of junction varied, but did not exceed 10 p depth. The back side of the slice was lapped back and a low-resistance n-type contact was formed (at 600°C in forming gas) to an Au-Mo tab with a hole in the middle for

Y.—In discussing Dr. Dudley's two most interesting papers, I feel a natural hesitancy in disagreeing with conclusions formed after such careful and conscientious work. But I think he has made his deductions from too meagre premises. The analyses of but twenty-five samples are entirely too few to justify the establishment of so important a formula. When we consider that he indirectly proposes to regulate an interest amounting, even at the present low prices, to over $20,000,000 per annum, we may well hesitate before accepting a formula based upon the chemical and physical analyses of but twenty-five steel rails. Dr. Dudley touches the keynote in referring to the proposed labors of the Government Test Commission. They based their hopes of attaining success upon the chemical and physical analyses of a very large number of samples, and in the only branch of investigation which the short-sighted policy of Congress has allowed them to complete, i.e., chain cables, we find that a dozen, twenty-five or one hundred tests gave no satisfactory results. It was only after many hundreds that they were enabled to' draw conclusions. There are so many circumstances hearing upon the life of a rail, that the task of extracting a correct result seems herculean. I presume I am right in stating that in our Northern latitudes early winter and spring months witness the breaking of the greatest number of rails, thus seeming to prove that an unstable road-bed has much to answer for. Then, again, broken and flattened wheels must be taken into account, but I am convinced that more rails have been broken by the treatment which they received before leaving the rolling-mill

Dr. Dudley touches the keynote in referring to the proposed labors of the Government Test Commission. They based their hopes of attaining success upon the chemical and physical analyses of a very large number of samples, and in the only branch of investigation which the short-sighted policy of Congress has allowed them to complete, i.e., chain cables, we find that a dozen, twenty-five or one hundred tests gave no satisfactory results. It was only after many hundreds that they were enabled to draw conclusions. There are so many circumstances bearing upon the life of a rail, that the task of extracting a correct result seems herculean. I presume I am right in stating that in our Northern latitudes early winter and spring months witness the breaking of the greatest number of rails, thus seeming to prove that an unstable road-bed has much to answer for. Then, again, broken and flattened wheels must be taken into account, but I am convinced that more rails have been broken by the treatment which they received before leaving the rolling-mill * The remarks of the participants in this debate have been written out by the speakers, and are here given without any attempt to retain the order of the dis¬cussion. While the report does not, therefore, preserve the vigor and spontaneity of the debate, it is believed that it gains in value by giving the matured views of the speakers. THE decades immediately before and after the end of the nineteenth century (1890-1910) were a period of increased activity in mineral industry education. One reason for this, undoubtedly, was the rapid increase in mineral production in the decade 1880-1890; pig iron and copper production tripled; coal, lead, and zinc output more than doubled. Most of the other mineral substances followed the same general trend. Aluminum production began in 1886; petroleum output, which in 1888 was less than it was in 1882, almost doubled in the next three years. Gold alone showed no appreciable change until its discovery at Cripple Creek in 1891, followed by the Klondike in 1896, brought to boiling a public interest in minerals that had been simmering for some years previously. The first cyanide plant in the United States was erected at Bodie in 1892, and the first chlorination plant at Cripple Creek* the next year. Silver- lead smelting had already greatly developed, and the metallurgy of copper was almost transformed. The hearth area and smelting capacity of copper reverberatory furnaces more than quadrupled between 1878 and 1894; matte converters were first erected at Butte in 1884. Copper production of the United States in 1899 was 20 times that of 1872. While it was the increased technology used in mineral production that really made the field attractive for educated young men, undoubtedly they did not realize that, and were impressed mainly by the quantitative increase in output. Another factor was the increased general interest in engineering education; three times as many men took engineering degrees in the United States in 1890 as in 1880; 1892 showed almost a 56 per cent increase over 1890. . RECENTLY two papers on the structure of eutectics were read before the British Institute of Metals, one by F. L. Brady1 and the other by A. Portevin.2 In the preparation of photomicrographs of laboratory specimens as illustrations for student work, and in connection with various researches; the writer has been working along the same line for some, time and, therefore, was much interested in the results given, especially those of Portevin. He has correlated the information on the subject and has outlined a broad scientific basis for future work along this line. It is largely with the idea-of adding something by way of illustration to the work already done that this paper is written. The eutectic is generally understood to mean the alloy having the lowest melting point of any alloy of the system, and in which the melt becomes supersaturated with reference to the two or more phases which, separate out simultaneously (or alternately). From the surface pattern, the eutectic means; a structure with no primary crystals. It is not always easy to get the exact eutectic composition in making any alloy; in fact, a slight range in composition may be expected and some of the coarser particles may be richer in either of the composing metals. Even when chemical analysis shows the right composition, differences in density of the pure metals may cause segregation, or. supercooling resulting from different crystallizing properties may give a surface pattern the appearance of being on one side of the eutectic point. However, the alloys on either side of the eutectic composition, showing primary crystals of one of the phases and the effect of the pro-eutectic form on the surface pattern of the eutectic make a very interesting study, which is slightly touched upon in this paper. The phases, or microconstituents, of a eutectic may be pure metals (Pb-Sb, Tl-Au), solid solutions (Cd-Zn), a pure metal and a solid solution; (Ag-Sn), or a pure metal or solid solution with an intermetallic compound (Sb-Mg, Sb-Cu, As-Cu, Bi-Te, etc.).

Magnesite both Massive and Crystalline MAGNESITES are. of two general classes-massive and crystalline. Massive magnesite occurs in serpentine, being formed by the breaking down or decay of serpentine-making minerals or rocks as olivine, etc. (All the magnesia contained by the olivine is not liberated, as a portion goes to make up the serpentine; the breaking up of this serpentine later forms more magnesite.) Serpentine in various stages of transformation is found in the vicinity of magnesite deposits. Massive magnesite is very widely distributed. It is found in Greece, . California, Africa, India, Australia, Mexico, South America, and deposits of varying sizes occur in several of the European countries. Those on the Island of Euboea, Greece, are probable the most important deposits of this character of magnesite. They have been worked for a number of years, the principal quarries or mines being 3 miles in the interior from the village of St. George. (St. George is on the west coast of the island, between the towns of Limni and Khalkis.) (Figs. 1 and 2). -The magnesite occurs in veins or lenses in serpentine. Some of these lenses are very large; one worked several years ago was approximately, 50 ft. in thickness, 75 to 100 ft. high and 300 ft. or more in length. The magnesite is pure white and makes a very prominent feature of the landscape. While massive magnesite is widely scattered over the world, many of the deposits are in veins too thin to work. The usual mode of occurrence is in the form of stock work, the deposits in Venezuela, Mexico, and many of those in California, being of this form. The veins vary in thickness from the thinness of paper up to several inches, running in all directions, occasionally leading to a mass or nucleus of some,size. The spaces between the veins are filled with a disintegrated serpentine in the form of sand. Several of the deposits in California would probably be workable, if they were more favorably situated with reference to transportation, but by far the majority of the deposits are too poor to work. THE purpose of this chapter is to present a general outline of the basic open-hearth process for the benefit of students, practicing open-hearth operators, and metallurgists who wish to review the subject. The discussion is limited to a description of the sequence and purpose of the operations, illustrated by data and examples. Subsequent chapters deal with more detailed and fundamental studies of the subject. The function of the basic open-hearth furnace is to convert various types of ferrous material into finished steel of given com- position and quality. In comparison with other steelmaking methods, the basic open-hearth process is one of the most versa- tile, both from the standpoint of the raw materials that can be used and the types of steel that can be produced. The process can be considered as a sequence involving melting, refining, and deoxidation. With some types of liquid-metal charges, the melting stage is not present, but refining and deoxidation in varying degrees are fundamental features of the process. GENERAL DISCUSSION OF BASIC OPEN-HEARTH PROCESS The first consideration in open-hearth practice is the type of charge on which the operation is based. This consists of three components-fluxing, oxidizing, and metallic materials. Fluxes. In the basic process the fluxing material is primarily lime, added in the form of either limestone (CaC03) or burnt lime (CaO) . This is supplemented by magnesia (MgO) and lime from the furnace bottom and banks. The function of these fluxes is to form a slag with the silica (SiO2) , manganese oxide (MnO), iron oxides (FeO and Fe203), and phosphorus oxide (P205) that are produced by the oxidation of varying amounts of the silicon, manganese, iron, and phosphorus in the charge during melting and refining. The slag, composed of the basic fluxes and the neutral and acid oxides, floats on top of the steel bath when the charge is melted. The composition of this slag depends on the amount of each slag-forming element present in the charge and on the extent of oxidation of these elements during the course
