Traditionally, mineral reserves management at most underground mines in Zimbabwe focus on maintaining large mineral reserves so that the time between development and production is as long as possible. Historical data at Shabanie mine, a Zimbabwean sub-level caving underground mining operation, confirms this practice. However, the high cost of underground development means that the luxury of large buffer mineral reserves cannot be justified. Furthermore significant increases in the costs of production, exacerbated by the current unfavourable economic climate, make the wisdom of extending development workings well ahead of use questionable. Poor ground conditions at Shabanie mine, mean that some development ends have to be re-mined two or three times due to partial or complete closure between the time they are mined and the time they are utilized. In order to reduce the inordinately high support costs associated with closure of development ends a new ?just-in-time? (JIT) approach that provides development ends as and when they are needed, has been adopted. Accordingly a model to determine an appropriate ?just-in-time? rate of development has been created. The JIT development model indicated that the mine could reduce development rates from 330 m/month in 2001, to 160 m/month in 2002 and achieve savings of about 50% on annual support costs, but still assure customers of a long-term product supply. The mine accepted the model in November 2001 and began implementing it in 2002. Results of the implementation will be reviewed in 2003.

"PID loops – also known as base layers or regulatory controls – form the foundation of any plant’s control layer and it is generally accepted that PID loop health has a direct impact on the plant’s bottom line. Keeping these thousands of control loops in good health has a direct impact on the plant’s bottom line: it reduces variability, improves quality and throughput, and decreases energy costs and raw material usage. This has been well proven and documented in many articles. In the last ten years, technology has evolved: control engineers can now keep track of control loop performance and link it to the root causes of variability. However, they lack industry-wide best practices and criteria for determining what can be considered as excellent, good, fair, or poor performance. To ensure that PID control loops continue to perform well and meet their objectives, control engineers need a combination of (a) an appropriate monitoring technology and (b) best practices for doing the maintenance of base layer controls.Most plants have limited resources and operate with an increasing number of constraints; therefore, using the right tools and including reports in daily workflow is key for success. This paper suggests roles and responsibilities of key players needed to work toward control performance best practices and discuss organisational changes to succeed.INTRODUCTIONAlthough PID controllers are reliable workhorses in the process industry, they are often underrated. Since the 1980’s, computer control has evolved and the control algorithms used by control engineers have become increasingly complex. However, PID controllers still handle over 90% of the control loops in operating plants. Table 1 shows the savings that can be realized by achieving best-practice in several different process control categories (Brisk, 2004). The savings are expressed as a percentage of production costs."

The separation of nickel and cobalt from calcium, magnesium and manganese by solvent extraction using synergistic mixtures of carboxylic acids was studied. Addition of certain viable synergists to commercially available tertiary branched carboxylic acids, such as Versatic 10 (Shell) or Neodecanoic acid (Exxon), produced large synergistic shifts (?pH50) in the pH50values for nickel, and small antagonistic shifts (negative ?pH50values) in the extraction of calcium. Under the initial test conditions used (0.50 M each of Neodecanoic acid and the Mintek synergist, in xylene) a large separation (pH50Ca? pH50Ni= 3.09 pH units) between nickel and calcium in their extraction from 1.00 M sodium nitrate solutions was obtained, compared with only 1.11 pH units in the absence of the synergist. The selectivity series for the extraction of divalent base metals from 0.333 M sodium sulphate solutions by 0.50 M Neodecanoic acid and 0.25 M of the Mintek synergist in C12-C13aliphatic diluent was found to lie in the order (with pH50values in parentheses): Cu(3.42) > Ni (5.08) > Zn (5.58) > Co (5.73) > Mn (6.62) > Ca (7.48) >Mg (8.25). In batch counter current experiments, a simulated leach liquor containing (in gL-1): Ni 5, Mg 5, Mn 2, Co 0.5, Ca 0.5, Cu 0.1and Zn 0.1 was contacted with the mixed extractant in three stages at unit phase ratio and an equilibrium pH of 5.9. The recovery of nickel was 99.9 per cent and that of cobalt was 84.7 per cent, whilst the co-extractions of manganese, calcium and magnesium were 2.7,1.5 and 0.04 per cent, respectively. The recovery of cobalt can be enhanced by employing a slightly higher pH, although this will also increase the extraction of manganese, calcium and magnesium somewhat. Nearly quantitative stripping (99 per cent) of nickel from the loaded organic phase was achieved in a single contact at an organic-to-aqueous phase ratio of 4 using a simulated spent electrolyte containing 39 gL-1sulphuric acid and 33 gL-1nickel,thereby producing an ?advance electrolyte? containing 57 gL-1nickelat pH 3.5. Loading of acid into the organic phase was very slight, amounting to only 0.002 M H+in contact with the above-mentioned spent electrolyte. Jining No. 3 Coal Mine, a subsidiary of Yanzhou Coal Company Limited. China, is a super-large modern mine. The coal mine is not only the first one constructed with five-million tons of designed production capacity in China, but also a modern underground coal mine with coal transportation systems by trains and ships, and with a power plant. Based on the hard roof conditions of the sublevel caving coal face in the fault-affected zone, the authors designed rebar and cable bolts for supporting the tailgate that is separated from the gob by a narrow pillar. With extensometers and borescope, strata behavior was systematically studied during tailgate development: (1). Roof convergence is much smaller as well as roof strata separation between inside and outside the anchored zone. (2). The affected zone during tailgate development is approximately 50 m. (3). Because of serious floor heave and obvious rib convergence, the tailgate finally turned into a reversed-trapezoid from the original rectangular shape. (4). There being many joints and fractures in the pillar, coal is crushed from the elastic bedded structure into loose blocky materials. But the tailgate met the service requirements during longwall retreat mining, and demonstrated that the method of roof support was a success. Since then, roof bolting has been widely used for the tailgate of longwall panels at Jining No. 3 Coal Mine. "The results of Mr. Klymowsky's research confirm the essential role played by oxidation products in the flotation of base metal sulphides. They invite a discussion on the subject of aeration which I may open by a brief description of the development and current practice of aeration. The first installation of pre-flotation aeration in Canadian milling practice was undertaken during the years 1928 and 29 at the then new Noranda Mill. C.G. McLachlan and his collaborators demonstrated that the flotation differential between chalcopyrite and iron sulphides was enhanced by aeration in soda ash alkaline pulps. The ores treated contained more than 80 per cent sulphides. It was proposed already then that the products of mineral oxidation assisted copper and retarded iron sulphides, at least pyrrhotite flotation. The concentration of thiosulphates was used as a measure of the progress of oxidation. Several papers by C.G. McLachlan elaborate on this subject.The aerator was also used as classifier since it was held that aeration, i.e. controlled oxidation, should go hand in hand with creation of new mineral surfaces. Grinding mills and aerators were placed in closed circuit. Figure 1. This aeration was essential for successful separation at Noranda.Following the application of aeration at Noranda the technique was applied to existing mills in N.W. Quebec. Impressive improvements in concentrate grades and recoveries were obtained. It was observedthat the zinc flotation benefitted from aeration as much as the preceding copper float. In the late forties and fifties the aerator classifier was installed in new mills associated with the Noranda group. A diagrammatic sketch of the Quemont flow-sheet (figure 2) may serve as a typical example."

Application of Gy?s formula is appropriate for calculation of the Fundamental Error (FE) prior to samples being collected at any stage of the minerals process, provided that sampling parameters K and a (alpha) have been determined by calibration of the ores. Two types of calibration procedure are well established in the industry, the Hetrogeneity test and the 32-piece sampling tree experiment. The sampling tree experiment uses the variance and average grade of metal analyses from four series of samples at different nominal fragment size, as the basic input data. Pierre Gy suggested the cube as an appropriate exponent of the nominal fragment size for use in his equation. More recent work suggests that this exponent is variable and characteristic of specific ores and therefore requires calibration. The method described here explains the experimental procedure of the calibration. It is then possible to calculate a sampling nomogram using the sampling parameters K and a. This allows the sampler to determine a suitable protocol for the sampling event that will ensure that the FE does not exceed a predetermined precision at any point in the sampling procedure.

The application of microwave energy as a substitute for conventional heating has drawn interest from many researchers in extractive metallurgy. Microwaves have a heating effect just as many other forms of radiant energy. Microwaves are able to penetrate the substance at which they are directed and in being absorbed heat the material from the inside. As a result of heat generated in the interior of a particle, microwaves can affect the rupture of a particle (in this case a host ore) and break down the matrix of the particle (host ore) and expose the recoverable mineral to the leaching reagent. Two series of leaching experiments were carried out at temperatures above 90????C using a conventional heater (hot plate) and a modified 850 W, 2.45 Ghz microwave oven. One series of tests was carried out at ambient temperature. A pyritic/arsenopyritic gold concentrate was leached with 3.3 kg/t to 6.8 kg/t NaCN for two hours. The extraction of gold at 6.8 kg/t NaCN was higher in microwave assisted leaching (59 per cent) than the extraction obtained in leaching at conventional heating (39 per cent) and ambient temperature (28 per cent). Extraction of gold was dependent on the size fraction used and was 48 per cent for û75 ¦m, 43 per cent for û90+75 ¦m and 37 per cent for û150 + 90 ¦m size ranges.

The flow function of an iron ore material governs its flowability characteristics in material handling chains within the resource industry. A uniaxial compression test is able to obtain a flow function more rapidly comparing to the Jenike direct shear test; nevertheless, the results often exhibit lower rankings using the former method. This study aims to investigate the fundamental stress states within the test specimen that lead to this phenomenon, and to introduce a new uniform density specimen preparation method for a uniaxial compression test, in order to achieve comparative flow functions as for a Jenike direct shear test. The minimisation of the wall friction effect and achievement of the critical state when preparing a uniaxial specimen are explicitly discussed. Experimental investigations on flow functions of a suite of Australian iron ore samples were conducted using both the uniform density uniaxial compression test and the Jenike direct shear test. Results from both methods were found to be comparable, providing the specimen exhibits cohesive flow behaviours. "A traditional linkage has long been established at Laval University's Department of Mining & Metallurgy between the Mineral Process (MP) and the Mining Exploitation (Min) on one hand, and between the Extractive Metallurgy (EM) and the Materials Engineering (Mat) on the other. This academic separation of Mineral Processing from Extractive Metallurgy at the educational level has become increasingly at odds with today's industrial practice in which both disciplines are not only complementary but also often intertwined. For instance, in gold ore processing, comminution, flotation, and gravity separation units are interfaced with atmospheric or pressure leaching modules and with carbon adsorption and electrowinning units. The new copper plants in South America combine comminution and flotation circuits with heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning processes.In order to reflect this new industrial reality and to harmonise the options offered in both its engineering programs, the Department of Mining and Metallurgy of Laval University has introduced major changes in its curriculum in 1996. These changes reflect also the recognition that the somewhat secondary status given so far to Mineral Processing and to Extractive Metallurgy within their ""mother"" programs, Mining/Mineral Engineering and Materials metallurgical Engineering respectively, was in sharp contrast with their actual significance for the Canadian economy. Leading industrial voices have raised similar concerns and the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board has also addressed this problem in its latest program evaluation.The changes implemented at Laval aimed at a) better representing MP and EM within the two undergraduate programs; b) training top-level versatile and multidisciplinary engineers, fluent in all aspects of MP and EM, irrespectively of which of the two ((mother)) programs they had chosen and capable of meeting today's industrial requirements; c) training students in process analysis, optimisation and automatic control using state-of-the-art software, and d) taking into account the co-operative nature of both undergraduate programs.Results are very encouraging in terms of student enrolment and industrial response. However, some concern is expressed on the sustainability of the renewed curriculum considering the drastic budget restrictions in effect at Laval as in most other Canadian universities."

Central Alaska contains a wide variety of pre-, syn-, and post -accretionary mineral deposits that are related to the growth and evolution of the north-west North American continental margin. Withinpre-accretionary terranes, the Devonian-Carboniferous, carbonate platform-hosted MVT zinc-lead deposits of the Kandik and Reef Ridge districts in central Alaska, and the Devonian-Mississippian volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) polymetallic deposits of the Bonnifield, and Delta mineral belts of eastern Interior Alaska have received the most exploration interest to date. Syn-accretionary rift related, mafic and ultramafic sill swarms and zoned plutons of the Kluane-Nikolai igneous belt are currently being explored for Ni-Cu-Co-PGE deposits. Syn-accretionary granitoid complexes in the PurcellMountains, Illinois Creek, and Sitylemenkat areas have been explored for uranium-REE-gold, and tin-silver mineralization respectivelyPost-accretionary granitoid intrusions and associated volcanic fields that range in age from mid-Cretaceous to early Tertiary contain significant gold-silver-polymetallic resources in the East Central Alaska, Hogatza, and Kuskokwim Mineral belts. Collectively the three main post-accretionary plutonic/volcanic belts of central Alaska are part of the Tintina Gold Province, where exploration since 1990has identified about 848 tonnes gold.

The commission may be permitted to express its earnest hope that the litigation which comes to an end with the findings and recom- mendations herein set forth will be considered by both parties to the action as definitely and equitably decided. The commission trusts that its work will show the value of the commission form of settlement and that its work will serve as a prece- dent to be followed in disputes relative to technical subjects. If the work of the commission is productive of a tendency on the part of technical litigants to avoid the use of the courts for the settlement of disputes it will not have been done in vain. Such tendency will surely grow and ultimately such differences will be arbitrated by technically trained men without recourse to the courts of law. Appended to the report of the findings of the commission are to be found the detailed reports covering the several lines of inquiry and investigation carried on by the commission and upon which its findings are based, and also a detailed statement of the fiscal affairs of the commission. A word of explanation is necessary in regard to the fiscal statement. While each party to the litigation has agreed to bear one-half of the expense of the investigations of the commission, it will be noted that the Selby Smelting & Lead Co. is credited with $21,000, while Solano County is credited with but $6,000. "History of Whitehorse Copper BeltThe first discovery of copper on the Whitehorse Copper Belt is reported to have been made by miners on their way to the Klondike in 1897. By 1899 the district had been well prospected and many of the presently known deposits had been staked.The first shipment of ore was from the Copper King property in 1900. This consisted of 9 tons of hand picked ore grading 46.4% copper. It was not until the period between 1912 and 1917, the production years of the Pueblo Mine, that significant ore shipments were made. Total production was 140,000 tons at 3.5% copper. An underground disaster killed six men and closed the mine in March 1917.Although the general area was dormant until after World War II, by 1947 geological mapping, magnetic surveys and diamond drilling had been done on the important showings. In 1954 Mr. Aubrey Simmonds directed the formation of Imperial Mines and Metals, which acquired by option and staking a large part of the Whitehorse Copper Belt. In 1957 Mr. Arnold Pitt reorganized the company as New Imperial Mines. With financing from Sumitomo and Toronto-Dominion Bank, a mill was built and production was started from the Little chief orebody by open pit in 1967."

The flotation response of a Pb-Zn sulphide ore from the Rosh Pinah Mine (Namibia) was studied in the presence of inorganic depressants such as sodium cyanide and zinc sulphate. Poor flotation selectivity was observed in the rougher concentrate of the galena circuit despite the use of a large amount of sodium cyanide. Batch flotation tests have shown that the use of cyanide alone is not efficient for the depression of sphalerite from the Rosh Pinah ore when milling is carried out according to the current plant particle size distribution. The use of both cyanide and zinc sulphate improved the selectivity between galena and sphalerite much better than cyanide alone. Flotation selectivity is limited by the mineralogical texture of the Rosh Pinah ore sample. Microscopic analysis has shown that the presence of sphalerite in the galena concentrate is also due to poor liberation between galena and sphalerite, especially in the middlings. Hence, selectivity could be improved by regrinding the rougher concentrate prior to the cleaning stage. Keywords: sulphide ores, flotation, flotation depressant, mineralogy.

The US economy and the demand for nonfuel minerals grew at lower rates in 1995 than in 1994. Demand for major metals, such as aluminum, copper and steel, was mixed but relatively stable. The building industry, including highway construction, helped to support modest overall growth in demand for industrial minerals. The value of processed materials of nonfuel mineral origin produced in the United States during 1995 was estimated to be $395 billion, an increase of almost 10%compared with 1994 (Fig. 1). The estimated value of US raw nonfuel minerals production during 1995 was $38billion, about 7% more than in 1994. The value of US minerals production has increased in 30 of the last 35years.

The use of piled raft foundations for tall buildings has been increasing in this decade as it is an economical alternative to conventional piled foundations. Piled rafts are composite structures comprised of the piles, raft and soil and so soil-structure interaction is important in computing the behaviour of the foundation. In this paper, the behaviour of piled rafts subjected to non-uniform loadings will be examined where the raft is supported by piles of different lengths. Finite layer techniques are used for the analysis of the horizontally layered soils and finite element techniques are used for the analysis of the raft and piles. This method accounts for the soil-structure interaction and the lateral resistance of the soil on the piles and raft. Results provided from the present method are compared with the results of a full 3D finite element analysis.

This paper describes the methods and equipment used by the Utah Copper Co. in constructing a vehicular tunnel at Bingham Canyon, Utah, Completion and use of this tunnel for vehicular and pedestrian traffic permitted abandonment of the long-used county highway connecting Bingham and Copperfield. Expanding- operations of the Utah Copper open-cut mine, necessitated construction of a vehicular route away from the ore body. The site Of the tunnel is well beyond ultimate nit slopes and future mining operations. The tunnel not only diverts vehicular and pedestrian traffic is but also carrier, creek water, copper water, sewage, pipe lines, and. power and telephone cables between the two communities. The dimensions of the tunnel permit one-way traffic only. Traffic-control lights have been installed. Owing to the possibility of accumulation of carbon monoxide gas from automobile exhausts, automatic gas detectors has been installed at various stations. These detectors control the operation of a large exhaust fan situated at the upper portal of the tunnel.

Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed primarily of calcite (calcium carbonate). In the presence of an aqueous solution of carbon dioxide (carbonic acid) bicarbonate radicals (2HCO3)- are produced that are highly soluble. The same type of reactions occur in terrains where dolomite (calcium magnesium bicarbonate) reacts with carbonic acid to produce highly soluble bicarbonates (4HCO3)-. The source of carbon dioxide is the small content in rainfall but to a large extent from the organics in the soil. The solution activity depends on many factors including the content of carbon in the rock, acidity of soil water, groundwater velocity and other factors. The resulting features are referred to in literature as sinkholes, solution channels, caves, karstic topography, and cavernous limestone. The presence of solution features affect the shafts in several ways: (a) the shaft resistance is affected by voids along the shaft, (b) concreting of the shaft should consider the presence of voids along the shaft, and (c) the shaft base may be in close proximity to a solution feature that may cause future collapse under structural loads. Methods to mitigate such effects include verification of rock to below the base (vertically and laterally). Cavities are stable by virtue of arching in the rock. Under the action of end bearing from a shaft, the arch may collapse depending on its proximity to the base of the shaft and the strength of the rock. This paper focuses on this issue. Finite Element analyses are conducted to relate shaft end load and bearing area that will produce failure based on given rock properties, size and location of cavity. Failure is defined as settlement of the base equivalent to 5% of shaft socket diameter. The software Plaxis is used for analysis. The rock is considered as c-f material derived based on Hoek-Brown failure criteria (2002 edition) that is based on Geological Strength Index (GSI).

Tailings and water management facilities are essential and integral components of mine and mill operations. They must be managed for the long term in order to ensure that safe and environmentally responsible stewardship is achieved. Toward this end, in 1998, The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) published A Guide to the Management of Tailings Facilities, which recommended the implementation of a tailings management framework (Figure 1) to integrate environmental and safety considerations into each stage of the life cycle of a tailings facility, from initial site selection and design, through construction and operation, to eventual decommissioning and closure. By February 2000 it was becoming apparent that while mining companies were making significant progress toward implementing and documenting tailings management systems, and integrating them with overall environmental management systems, further effort was warranted in their application at the operational level. In particular, a need was identified for further guidance in preparing manuals that outline procedures for the safe operation, maintenance and surveillance (OMS) of tailings and water management facilities.
