Failure of drainage works is one of the principal threats to the sustainability of mine closure facilities but the risk can largely be remedied by appropriate design of mine closure drainage facilities. The feasibility of sustainable mine closure facilities that avoid failure of drainage systems needs to be established during the early stages of mine planning, before mine disturbances make sustainable closure uneconomical. Experience in mine development shows there is often enough latitude in mine plan development to incorporate measures with neutral economic consequence and positive environmental benefit. Project managers need to resist the temptation to develop mine plans and closure drainage plans independently. Integrated mine planning with effective inputs by environmental specialists and drainage designers may affect the overall mine configuration, footprint and schedule. Key issues pertain to the end pit location, waste dump configurations, pit infill elevations, fluid impoundments, diversion channel routing and preservation of flows to receiving waters. Guidelines with illustrations of suitable practices are presented to assist mine planners.

Operations and maintenance departments have had a long-standing adversarial relationship. The widespread evolution and adoption of modern management techniques, such as reliability centered maintenance (RCM) and Lean, however, has driven interest in working co-operatively to optimize overall plant performance. Mining and minerals operations have long adopted RCM in maintenance and are now adopting Lean throughout organizations. Such modern management initiatives explicitly call for co-operation between the two disciplines of maintenance and production and many advances have been made in terms of people and methodology. One area that has lagged behind in supporting these developments, however, is information systems. Enterprise asset management (EAM) systems in maintenance and newer manufacturing execution systems (MES) in operations have not been truly integrated in the needed ways. Complicated plants, different software architectures, continually changing conditions and many other variables have led to systems problems, which have contributed to the maintenance/operations divide. Master data synchronization (the plant tree) and integrated reporting of real-time data with transactional data are just two of the issues that are being solved by new approaches in information technology, including web services and service orientated architectures. New technologies are coming on-stream to enable the final bridging of the gap.

QIT Madagascar Minerals (QMM)’s heavy mineral sand deposit located near the Village of Fort Dauphin, Madagascar was recently drilled using Boart Longyear Company’s Mini-Sonic drill. Continuous sand core samples were obtained to a depth of up to 30 meters for analysis and compared with the existing drilling data. Results were used as part of a validation process of the resource estimate, based on approximately 1,500 exploration holes drilled to date.

Like some other Pt-group metals palladium shows a low but considerable solid solubility of oxygen, which was found already from oxidation studies. The oxygen solid solubility of palladium in equilibrium with gaseous oxygen has been investigated at 900 - 1300 °C in oxygen (665 mbar) and air by gassing and analyzing polycrystalline samples. The 0-concentrations range from 40 to 90 ppm and decrease with rising temperature. The isobaric solubility can be represented by the least-squares fit log c0 = 0.5 log p02- 0.32 + 920/T (c0 in wt. ppm, p02 in mbar, T in K). The thermodynamic data of the exothermic solution reaction are calculated to ?H°= -17.6 kJ?mol-1 and ?S° -76.5 J?mol ? K-1. The behaviour of palladium in an oxygen atmosphere is characterized by the simultaneous reactions of the solution of oxygen in the metal and the formation and evaporation of volatile oxides besides the pure metal evaporation.

A major focus of ground control research presently being conducted by the Geomechanics Group at the University of British Columbia, Canada, in conjunction with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Spokane Research Laboratory, is the development of design guidelines for underground mining within weak rock masses. The study expands upon the span design curve for man-entry operations and the stability graph for nonentry operations developed at UBC by extending the application to weak rock masses. The original database has been augmented by weak rock mass information from mines throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, Indonesia, and Europe. The common factor in all of these mines is the presence of a weak back and/or walls. This paper expands on the North American database and how the design curves have been employed at mining operations throughout the world. The definition of a weak rock mass for this study has been defined as having an RMR76 under 45% and/or a Q-value under 1.0.

Open pit mine planning is normally based on the selection of an economic envelope that has been generated by the Lerchs & Grossman algorithm, which requires individual economic valuation of each block of a geological block model. The selected envelope, usually called Final Pit, is later discretized in pushbacks and benches, which correspond finally to the fractions that the production schedule will allocate in time. This planning methodology has been widely used by the mining industry in countless projects to exploit open-pit mines, however, in many of the deposits can be found some undesirable elements such as arsenic, phosphates, ash among others that tend to reduce the value of elements of economic interest, either by disrupting the processes of concentration or as deemed impurities that affect the quality of the final product. Thus, a fair amount of blending would be required to capture the real value of the ore body. The traditional approach under estimates a block value by penalizing the block value by the amount of contaminant even when at the mine a set of blocks is amine at a time. This paper proposes a methodology for computing cut off grades over time that would maximize net present value allowing blending that should fulfill a set of metallurgical constraints. Preliminary results show significant increases in value and reserves quantity, questioning the use of fixed cut-off grades in generating a production schedule when blending applies to fulfill a set of geometallurgical constraints. Finally, the model allows the authors to show the importance of having adequate planning tools that will lead to the ability to look at the potential economic value of a mineral deposit.

Thirty-four retaining walls are part of the $46 million upgrade of a 1942 depressed highway in Highland Park, Michigan near Detroit. This project will close a missing link between two newer roadways, I-75 and the John Lodge Freeway. The existing 75 ft. wide, six lane Davison Freeway is being replaced by a eight to ten lane, 200 ft. wide depressed highway in a limited right of way. The highway will be 20-25 ft. deep and 1.5 miles long. A design/build decision by the Michigan DOT saved about 37% of the engineers estimated cost of $19 million for the walls. The successful pre-qualified specialty contractor utilized an innovative solution for the walls consisting of tiedback/cantilevered walls on the north side and mechanically stabilized earth walls on the south side. All of the walls have an identical cast-in-place architectural facing.

The acceptance of AugerCast piles in Canada has been limited. Many engineers are apprehensive about the quality of the piles produced by this method. However, advances in the sensing instruments and computer technology can now provide satisfactory levels of quality assurance. Post construction tests such as the sonic echo method can give an indication of pile shaft integrity. Computerized monitoring of the pile installation process is an immediate and more positive method of quality assurance. The computer continuously measures and records the parameters which indicate the quality of the pile. If these parameters do not indicate a satisfactory pile, it is replaced before the concrete hardens. Computerized monitoring of the installation process is another tool available to the engineer. The data from this system analyzed with soil borings, site inspections, and possibly sonic tests can provide the engineer with enough information for pile certification.

"Bell Creek Mill which has been in continuous operation since 1987 has undergone numerous operational changes in the past three years. The addition of over 2. 5 million tons of resource at over 13 git from Hoyle Pond Mine precipitated an expansion program for the Bell Creek Mill. This paper discusses the major changes that have occurred over the past two years to increase throughput and efficiencies. In addition, the refractory ore treatment options are also discussed.IntroductionThe Bell Creek Mill is located in the Timmins Goldcamp approximately 8km NE of porcupine Ontario. (Fig I.)The mill was originally constructed by Camamax in 1987 to treat the Bell Creek ore at a design throughput of 350tpd. The flowsheet (Fig 2.) consisted of two stage crushing, grinding, thickening, leach and drum filtration with gold recovery by Merrill Crowe.As ore depleted at Bell Creek, the Mill was purchased by Falconbridge to process ore from their Hoyle Pond property. Kinross purchased the Hoyle Pond property and Bell Creek Mill from Falconbridge in 1992.The successful exploration program at Hoyle Pond has led to several expansions and process design changes, with further changes planned over the next twelve months.In 1994, the mine produced 61,865 oz. of gold at an average cost of 197US$ per oz. In 1995 production was 91, 611 oz. at a cost of 187US$ per oz. Projecting the nine months ended September 30, production for 1996 will be 155,000 oz. at a cost of 165US$ per oz.In early 1997, the CIP expansion will be complete, with a target of 175,000 oz. at a cost of 176US$ per oz for 1997. The mill throughput will have increased from 400tpd to 1500tpd between 1994 and 1997.The changes to Bell Creek since 1994 have been numerous with very little of the existing equipment still in operation. The total cost of the expansion to date is 15 million C$. This paper discusses the major projects carried out during in this time. The focus will be to highlight the justification of each project, the design and engineering, some of the initial start-up problems and solutions.Figure 3 shows a plan of the existing mill facility together with the various additions that were carried out."

Industrial practice in mineral processing shows that an important problem in understanding and monitoring in-mill parameters is due to the lack of fundamental knowledge and appropriate sensors. However, over the last decade, Discrete Element Method (DEM) modelling has shown an interesting potential in describing the fundamentals of grinding mill behaviour, in improving the understanding of internal grinding mill dynamics, and in developing solutions to industrial practice. With the objective of bringing this modelling technology into the concentrator control room to assist operators, this paper aims to describe the main elements needed to apply this emerging and developing technology to on-line mill performance monitoring.

The creation and maintenance of a healthy working environment in surface mining operations require sustained efforts in pursuing advanced research initiatives toward the development and deployment of powered haulage technologies. This paper contains progress summary on a frontier research in truck dynamic control, vision and collision avoidance. This research is required to provide solutions to challenging problems regarding operator visibility in truck haulage in a surface mining environment. The paper focuses on truck control kinematics and dynamics, truck-haul road interactions, intelligent truck sensing, intelligent truck collision avoidance system, integrated system for situational awareness, augmented visualization and operator interface, and field testing and error variance modeling of developed technologies. A sensor suite of four subsystems, including front-side stereo-camera, front-side Doppler radar, close range sonar proximity sensors, and rear-side camera system have been recommended for developing a 360° truck operator vision to allow safe operations. This research initiative is significant because it will provide a strong basis for developing technologies to improve truck haulage safety in surface mines and construction sites.

The distribution of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits through time is episodic, involving relatively short time intervals of apparent high productivity and long intervals of low productivity. This distribution is principally related to the geodynamic evolution of the Earth. The vast majority of these deposits is associated with the assembly of supercontinents and form along convergent margins, generally in back-arc basins or rifted arcs. This contrasts with the distribution of black smoker deposits, which presently form along both convergent margins, particularly in the western Pacific, and divergent margins at mid-ocean ridges. However, the latter environment is rarely preserved deep into the geological past.There also appear to be systematic patterns in a number of other features of volcanic-hosted massive deposits through time. Deposits hosted by mafic-dominated successions are dominant in Archean to Proterozoic rocks, whereas deposits hosted by felsic-dominated successions are most common in Phanerozoic rocks. Geochemical characteristics of felsic rocks within the host successions and ore lead and sulfur isotope data of the ores have also changed with time. This suggests changes in the process of subduction and/or changes in the characteristics of the over-riding plate with time, consistent with isotopic and geologic evidence for greater reworking of pre-existing crust during the Phanerozoic.Other secular changes that are reflected in characteristics of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits include the redox state and salinity of coeval oceans. As an example, both the abundance of sulfate minerals and sulfur isotope patterns reflect the development of periods of anoxic conditions over time, with major intervals of anoxia reflected by a virtual lack or low abundance of sulfate minerals in volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits in the Mesoarchean to the Palaeoproterozoic, and shorter intervals since.CITATION:Huston, D L, Eglington, B, Pehrsson, S, Piercey, S and Doublier, M, 2015. On Nov 1, 2007 House Resolution 2262 ? The Hardrock Mining and Reclamation Act of 2007 ? was passed by the U.S. House by a vote of 244-166. HR-2262, among other things, would impose a 4-per-cent royalty on existing mines with commercial production and an 8-percent gross royalty on all new claims. Not surprisingly, this possible new law was one of the hottest topics of discussion at the Northwest Mining Association?s conference that this year returned to Spokane, WA for its 113th annual meeting on Dec. 3-7. More than 1,800 delegates attended the conference that was held under the banner theme of ?Mining ?. For today and tomorrow.? Northwest Mining Association executive director Laura Skaer was one of many speakers during the three-day conference to respond to the threat to the industry posed by HR-2262 with a presentation titled ?Potential changes to the 1872 Mining Law.? In the presentation that she first unveiled at the Alaska Miners Association?s convention and trade show on Nov. 8, Skaer laid out a comprehensive list of problems with HR-2262. In addition to the association?s obvious concerns about the proposed royalty, Skaer noted that the bill includes a mine veto provision that would allow the Secretary of the Interior the authority to deny an operations permit to a project if the secretary determines that the operation would cause undue degradation to public lands and resources. Potential massive withdrawals from mineral entry are also included in HR-2262. Among the lands that could be off limits to miners under HR-2262 are wilderness study areas, areas of environmental concern and 23.6 hm2 (58.5 million acres) identified as Roadless Rule. States, political subdivisions and Indian Tribes would also have more authority to withdraw lands, she said. To combat the proposed changes, Skaer made 10 trips to Washington D.C. on behalf of NWMA members in 2007. In her presentation at the annual meeting, she also objected to provisions that include no life-of-mine permits and uncertain permit renewals and new and duplicative environmental standards that she said are vague, ambiguous and inconsistent with current federal and state environmental laws. Debra W. Struhsacker, an environmental permitting and government relations consultant, also spoke on the issue of HR-2262 with a presentation titled ?The House mining law bill ? Rip van Winkle is back ? and he?s meaner than ever.?

The reaction between carbon and slags is of significant importance in direct smelting of iron ores, EAF slag foaming and copper slag cleaning processes. This reaction is known to occur via gaseous intermediates and it is important to have fundamental data to understand the relative importance of each reaction step. In this study, the rate of CO2dissociation on different slag surfaces is measured using an isotope exchange technique. It was found that increasing iron oxide content up to 30 wt per cent does not have a significant effect on the rate constant while increasing from this limit, increases the rate constant dramatically. Activation energy of CO2dissociation on slags of unit basicity and different iron oxide contents is in the range of 180±40 kJ/mol. It is found that rate constant dependence on oxygen potential in the slag phase is increasing with iron oxide concentration. In the case of copper making slags, the influence of copper oxide is found to increase the magnitude of apparent rate constant, while decreasing the activation energy considerably. "Flotation plants typically aim to maximise recovery at or above a target grade. As the ore from the mine varies, operators increase or decrease the mass pull in different flotation banks by adjusting air and level set points in order to achieve target concentrate grade. A methodology has been developed to maximise overall recovery at target grade by determining the optimal mass pull for each bank. However, the approach of targeting equal grade for each ore type in the deposit leads to sub-optimal overall recovery. This is because some ore types sacrifice a large amount of recovery to reach target grade while others easily achieve target grade and can be processed at higher than target grade for little or no loss in recovery. Processing different ore types at different grades and blending the concentrates therefore gives a higher overall recovery.This paper presents a case study where an 80 year production forecast was made for a large Chilean copper concentrator in feasibility stage. A circuit model was created using SGS’s Integrated Geometallurgical Simulator (IGS) for the different ore types to be processed. The model was calibrated from standard rougher flotation tests (MFT), cleaner tests and from the results of plant surveys of similar operations. The pull rates for each bank in the circuit were determined to achieve an optimal graderecovery curve for each ore type. These curves were combined at different concentrate grades for each ore type to obtain the mathematically optimal overall recovery at target grade. The paper shows a methodology for obtaining an optimal combination of operating conditions for each ore type to maximise overall recovery at a set combined concentrate grade."

It is believed that sulfur and volatile matter contents in coals are the main intrinsic properties to cause the self-heating of coal. Their oxidation at lower temperatures than that of fixed carbon to initiate coal's self-heating should be quantified. This study is aimed to improve the previous mathematical model developed by the authors for studying the coal's propensity for spontaneous combustion. It enhances the model's ability to consider the effects of sulfur, volatile matter and moisture contents in the coal - three important factors affecting the coal's self-heating process. Sulfur exists in coal primarily in the form of pyrite which will be oxidized rapidly under suitable conditions. Volatile matters, higher in low rank coals, are more easily to be oxidized. Heat of water condensation provides initial energy for low temperature oxidation. Heat release rates for pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation are built in the model. Finally, the simulation results in terms of time versus temperature on pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation are validated with the adiabatic testing data respectively.

Recent studies on the physico-chemical properties of molten slags and oxide solid solutions of interest is reviewed. The review covers redox and phase equilibria in slags, viscosity, diffusivity, electrical conductivity, kinetics of interfacial reactions between slags and CO-CO2, interfacial properties and phenomena. Some highlights from ongoing work on modelling phase diagrams, component activity, viscosity and electrical conductivity of multi-component slags will be presented and results compared with published experimental data on slags with or without suspended solid phases.

The high cost of constructing mineral processing plants in remote locations warrants a close examination of the alternatives available for reducing the amount of on-site construction work. Among the alternatives are portable process plants, modular design and barge mounted plants. Each alternative has certain advantages as well as limitations depending upon specific conditions. On the basis of practical experience and engineering analysis, the paper examines the potential benefits to be realized by these techniques and summarizes the conditions required to obtain them. The potential savings indicated by such studies should encourage consideration of innovative design features for new plants located in remote areas.

Laboratory and field tests during the past five years indicated considerable variation in the penetrating power of commercially available gun perforators. Many of the guns which achieved inadequate penetration in these tests have since been improved. However, recent productivity tests indicated the possibility of inadequate penetration or, at least, ineffective penetration in some wells. Laboratory experiments under simulated well conditions have demonstrated considerable plugging of the perforations, apparently as a result of factors associated with the shooting process and/or the drilling mud in the well at the time of perforating. The restrictions to flow per unit of hole depth caused by this plugging appears to be greater for jet perforators than for bullet guns of comparable diameter; however, because of the greater depth of penetration obtained with the jet guns, the total flow rates appear to he approximately equal. Limited testing with an experimental shaped charge suggests that less shot hole restriction and greater flow rates may result from larger-diameter perforations or other factors related to charge design. INTRODUCTION Gun perforating has been accepted for a number of years as a routine well completion method which is often preferred since it permits more selective operation of producing zones. Nevertheless, questions have continued to arise as to the effectiveness of the communication paths established between the productive formation and the interior of the casing. The basis for these questions has generally been failure to obtain anticipated fluid production rates through gun perforated completions in specific wells. These low productivities, together with the frequent recovery of bullets from well bores, were considered strong evidence of inadequate penetration. Laboratory investigations of the penetration performance of many of the bullet guns available as late as 1948 gave support to these indications. Subsequent electrical analog studiesl,2,3 indicated that the depth of penetration required to provide productivities equivalent to open hole was beyond the capacity of most bullet perforators evaluated in the early laboratory penetration tests. These results, together with the advent of the shaped charge in the field of oil well perforating, stimulated the interest of both oil operators and service companies in gun development. Improvements in gun design resulted in jet and bullet guns which appeared to be capable of providing sufficient penetration for most perforating jobs. However, some wells failed to yield satisfactory fluid production even after being perforated with the more powerful guns, again raising the question as to the effectiveness of the perforating operation. This fact, together with preliminary shooting into targets prepared with formation cores, indicated that factors associated with the perforating process and/or the fluids in the well bore at the time of shooting may reduce effective formation penetration and thereby decrease well productivity. These laboratory and field data prompted another phase in the investigation of the effectiveness of gun perforating: a program to determine the extent and seriousness of perforation plugging under simulated well conditions.
