This study was conducted to establish the effects of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) system with sintered metal substrate on the concentrations and size distributions of nano and ultrafine aerosols and concentrations of nitric oxides in underground mine air. The study focused on the formation and transformation of nucleation mode particles in mine air under prevailing test conditions. Experimental work was conducted in the NIOSH Diesel Laboratory at the Lake Lynn Laboratory experimental mine, a facility developed to allow evaluation of control technologies directly in underground conditions. The DPF system was examined for four repeatable steady-state engine modes using a naturally aspirated mechanically controlled Isuzu C240 diesel engine fueled with ultralow sulfur fuel. The engine coupled to an eddy-current dynamometer was operated in the underground drift with tightly controlled ventilation. Measurements upwind and downwind of the exhaust system discharge were used to quantify the effects of the DPF system on the mine air. A baseline was established using a standard muffler. The study showed that sintered metal DPF systems reduced the total mass of aerosols in the mine air by more than ten-fold when compared to a muffler. The nucleation mode aerosols (50dem<40 nm) in mine air were found to be strongly influenced by engine operating mode. The concentration of nucleation mode aerosols was found to be significantly higher for high-load modes than for low-load modes. The muffler and DPF system resulted in comparable total nitrogen oxides (NOx) concentrations. However, the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) fraction of the total NOx was found to be substantially higher for both systems for low-load modes than for high-load modes.

Ore from Henderson’s 7700 Southwest panel cave is transported between the production and truck haulage levels through a series of orepasses. A typical orepass complex consolidates dump points from four production drifts into two long bored raises feeding into a single truckloading chute. The system typically covers a vertical extent of 200 m and a lateral extent of 90 m. In the process of commissioning several initial orepass complexes, challenges with preferential draw in the long bored raises were observed. Preferential draw occurs when one long orepass mobilises much sooner and/or flows significantly faster than the other orepass. This has negative implications for orepass availability in the production drifts. As future mining at Henderson relies on the construction and use of such orepass systems, the development of appropriate design criteria and practical solutions to existing flow problems was necessary.A series of PFC3D numerical models were developed to assist in identifying the factors influencing preferential draw and possible corrective measures. The models helped to identify two primary factors that caused the preferential effect: the relative elevation of the brow at the bottom of each long bored raise, and the location of the bin used to funnel fragmented rock from both raises into the chute. Advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) are sophisticated materials being developed by the steel industry to mitigate challenges related to the performance of motor vehicles. To meet the requirements of AHSS, the ferromanganese alloys (FeMn) utilized in the production of the steel are required to contain acceptable levels of unwanted impurities, i.e. P, S, N, H, and C. The focus of the current study was to investigate dephosphorization of ferromanganese to produce a low-P alloy that could be effectively utilized in the production of AHSS. The study involved conducting laboratory-scale testwork to study the efficiency of CaO-based slag systems to dephosphorize FeMn alloys. The addition of Na2O, CaF2, and BaO to MnO-CaO-SiO2 slag was considered. The test work was carried out in a 25 kW induction furnace at temperatures of 1350°C, 1400°C, and 1450°C. The P partition coefficient (Lp) remained small at <1, which is an indication that dephosphorization had not been achieved. The baseline slag, comprising 40%CaO-40%SiO2-20%MnO, reported higher Lp values. Addition of Na2O and CaF2 did not show any further benefit. Substituting half of the CaO by BaO, resulted in similar Lp values to those of the baseline slag under conditions of 1350°C and 1450°C at 30 minutes. In summary, based on the Lp values obtained, the conditions investigated with the CaO-based slags appeared to have been unfavourable for dephosphorization of FeMn alloys, as most of this impurity element remained in the alloy.

An optical probe for burner monitoring in copper flash smelting, first developed at the University of Concepcion, is being industrially tested in a collaboration between Kingston Process Metallurgy, Aurubis AG, and Queen’s University. The sensor uses fibre-optics and optical emission spectroscopy to analyze the light emitted from combusting particles in the furnace reaction shaft. Information that can be extracted from the emission spectrum includes the temperature and brightness of the flame, as well as emission lines or bands from excited atomic and/or molecular species. Laboratory proof of concept testing of the sensor was first completed in a continuously fed drop tube reactor using O2/S stoichiometric ratios between 0.8–4.0. These O2/S stoichiometries capture the industrial operating condition, which is typically less than 1. The results from lab testing justified a plant trial of the optical probe, which was done in the Aurubis Hamburg flash furnace in September 2018. From this trial, approximately 31 hours of spectral data were collected and synchronized with furnace operating data. The results from both drop tower test work and the plant trial are discussed with implications for process monitoring in the commercial furnace. INTRODUCTION Flash furnace smelting is a continuous feed, batch tap, pyrometallurgical process. It is used to treat copper sulphide concentrates and small amounts of secondary materials, such as dust generated by the process. O2 enriched air and the concentrate blend are fed into the furnace reaction shaft through the concentrate burner. As the particles fall through the reaction shaft, they heat up and ignite, causing rapid, exothermic reactions that oxidize the iron sulphide, some copper sulphide and impurities in the feed. Reacted particles fall into the settler of the furnace, melt and separate into a matte and slag, while the SO2 enriched off-gas is carried out of the furnace for heat recovery and H2SO4 production. Operation of the furnace is achieved by adjusting a limited number of control variables. The main variables are the blast feed rate, blast oxygen enrichment, SiO2 flux feed rate and CH4 combustion rate (CH4 is used when the chemical energy of the concentrate is low) all measured relative to a set feed throughput. (Davenport & Partelpoeg, 1987; Davenport, King, Schlesinger & Biswas, 2002) The batch tapping nature of flash furnaces makes operation difficult because these control variables impact each other, and product quality can only be measured when matte and slag are tapped from the furnace. This means that operation of a furnace is based on feedback control from matte and slag assays. Because of the time-delay associated with understanding product quality, there is interest in using technology to monitor the combustion reactions that happen in the furnace reaction shaft.

This volume, the first of a six volume final report, provides an executive summary of the research and results carried out under a grant from the U. S. Bureau of Mines on underground coal mine ventilation. Under the project, a mine ventilation simulator was developed. Sensitivity of leakage and friction factors on the total quantity and pressure requirements was studied. The simulator was applied to a new mine under development, and to an operating mine, to demonstrate the usefulness of the simulator in ventilation planning and in evaluating proposed changes to existing ventilation system. The Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) will build about 500 miles of new 500-kV transmission lines in the next 5 years. Many new lattice towers will be built in remote locations or in environmentally sensitive areas. Therefore, micropile foundations were designed that could be installed in remote areas, in variable subsurface conditions, and in a manner that would reduce excavation volumes and potential erosion concerns. Typical lattice tower foundation axial loads range between 75 and 1,500 kips (300 to 6,700 kilonewtons [kN]) per leg, with uplift loads being slightly less than compressive loads. Lateral loads range from 5 to 320 kips (20 to 1,400 kN) per leg. Full-scale axial and lateral load tests were conducted in geologically representative soil units during the micropile design for the 9-mile-long (14-kilometer [km]), Kangley-Echo Lake transmission line that extends through a protected watershed east of Seattle, Washington. Micropile foundations for single and double circuit suspension and dead end towers were designed using these load test data.

In focusing on open pit mine scheduling, one of the biggest areas that a mining engineer can add value is in the area of cut-off grade optimisation. It is not atypical to add up to an extra 20 per cent in value by bringing forward higher-grade ore and deferring costs into the future.There are many techniques available to maximise net present value (NPV) when applied to open pit mine scheduling. That in itself raises the question of why so many of these techniques exist. The short answer is that none of these techniques are robust. Every time the problem changes, the algorithms also have to change.Instead of trying to make a problem fit the constraints of an existing technique, there is much to be said for usefully hybridising different approaches. This paper describes an innovative approach where evolutionary algorithms are combined with both local search and linear programming. The goal is maximising NPV through optimisation of cut-off grade policy and extraction sequence for an open pit mine. The cut-off/cut-over grade policy produced caters for multiple processing streams and stockpiles.Finally we demonstrate the quality of the algorithm by comparing some results with a well-known mathematical solution.CITATION:Myburgh, C A, Deb, K and Craig, S, 2014. During an&nbsp;eight month period, January to August 1978, nine bore holes were drilled in the Mikonui River gravels. On account of two rebores required from near bottom, the number of bores is in effect 11. Just on 1300 feet were drilled with an average depth of 120 feet. Depth varied from 102 feet to 133 feet. Penetration on average per hole value, varied from 7.4 to 16.4 feet per day. Gold values were even more erratic. Drill rig used was the Keystone churn drill manufactured locally by the Dispatch Foundary. It is skid mounted and requires a crew of two persons.

The BGMR has developed a method for an online-analysis during drilling processes in cooperation with Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology in Aachen and various industrial partners. This allows for efficient utilization of deposits, maximum recovery of desired minerals and frequent and costefficient updates of deposit models. The used method, namely laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), was implemented into a compact demonstrator in order to analyze drill dust and loosened material within mining environments and directly on drill rigs. The consequently developed OFURanalyzer (OFUR ? online-analysis of mineral deposits) provides possibilities for exploration and visualization of deposit models in real-time and thus creates an opportunity for innovative applications, such as contactless, continuous quality control of minerals throughout the extraction process. A major challenge in the execution of this project was the necessity to develop a laser system that could withstand rough mining environments dominated by dust, shocks, vibration and therefore would be suited to operate under such conditions.

After becoming an oil exporter in 1972, Ecuador experienced a remarkable economic upswing until 1978. However, in 1979 and 1980, a combination of only slight improvements in agricultural output and stagnating petroleum output lowered rates of real gross domestic product (GDP) expansion to 5.3% and 4.3%, respectively. In current prices, the GDP in 1980 was estimated at $11.3 billion.2 The slowdown in growth is attributable in large part to the low level of petroleum exploration in the 1972-79 period. Ecuador&apos;s production of petroleum declined 4.5% in 1980 compared with that of 1979. The consortium of Corporación Eatetal Petrolera Ecuatoriana (CEPS), the State oil company, and Texaco, Inc., operating in Ecuador&apos;s eastern jungle region was responsible for nearly all of 1980 production, The volume of total crude petroleum exports from Ecuador dropped from 44.7 million barrels in 1979 to 40 million barrels in 1980, although crude petroleum export revenues rose from $1,032 million in 1979 to $1,294 million in 1980- The latter figure represented 54% of Ecuador&apos;s 1980 merchandise exports. Crude oil exports accounted far about 46% of the value of 1979 merchandise exports. The total nonfuel mineral exports in 1980 were valued at less than $1 million.

Resources and reserves are critical inputs into the determination of an operating mineÆs financial results and balance sheets, but how well understood is this fact. Do the investors, directors, accountants and geologists/engineers responsible for preparing or relying on relevant aspects of the end results properly understand the inputs and outputs and the associated risks that may be established. The first step is to understand how financial reports are impacted. The most obvious, and best known, impact is in the calculation of depreciation and amortisation charges against long term assets. In addition, however, there is a requirement to regularly determine whether asset book values are impaired û this is nearly always performed globally by the preparation of a discounted cashflow model for a mine which is usually based on a mine life as determined from the resource and reserve statement û the particular driver here is normally the short and long term production plans. A key aspect of the short term production plan is that it would normally not assume that the reserve and resource statement implies consistent grade, stripping ratios, etc. However, outside of the early years of a plan, more generic assumptions of these variables are often made in conjunction with the reserve and resource statement. Depending on the timeframe of the detailed production plans, this can have a large impact on a projectÆs net present value. Other financial balances that may also be impacted include restoration and rehabilitation provisions, retrenchment provisions and deferred or equalisation stripping accounts. The age old question of whether all reserves should be used or whether some or all of the resources should be included for financial reporting purposes has never been adequately resolved. It is our view that there should be no prescriptive answer to this question but judgement of all professionals involved in the process needs to be included. Furthermore, the company needs to be able to support their conclusions with well thought out and appropriate answers. This may not be in line with the approach that certain accounting standard setters may be proposing or taking, and this paper will outline the current status of global requirement and the likely future directions. Whether reserves or resources are utilised, does not change the key requirement that those preparing or using reserve and resource statements need to understand key aspects. For example: geologists/engineers do they know how reserves or resources will be used? have they imparted information on variability of key drivers such as grade or depth or dilution? do they know that major financial/business altering decisions may be made based on the analysis? accountants do they understand where the numbers have been derived from and the assumptions that may have been made in their determination? do they understand the degree of accuracy (or inaccuracy) that may exist particularly with resources)? do they understand the history of resource reconciliations and what it may mean for the future? directors do they understand the processes undertaken by the company to prepare the financial report and the interaction between the geologists/engineers and accountants? do they understand the potential sensitivity of results to the input variables? Financial reporting is extremely reliant on the use of the reserves and resources, however, the geologists/engineers, accountants and directors do not always understand the interactions between themselves which may lead to misleading public reporting. More education and communication between various parties is needed.

Whilst the fossil fuel-based power industry moves towards carbon capture and storage (CCS) or so-called &apos;geosequestration&apos;, the minerals industry should adapt to reap the benefits of the new technology. If CCS becomes viable, the door is open to potential key developments in mineral processing. For example, truly continuous steelmaking could at last be realised using natural or manufactured gas combined with generic melt circulation. Iron ore fines would form a thin molten layer moving countercurrent to the gaseous reductant on one side of a melt circulation loop with efficient post-combustion without deleterious effects of slag accumulation on the other. This eliminates oxygen steelmaking because carbon has no access to the circulating molten iron. Steelmaking merely requires addition of the appropriate low level of carbon and in-line impurities removal to meet product specification. Concerning non-ferrous smelting, nothing short of virtually zero gas emission will be acceptable in the future. For dolomite-hosted Zn/Pb sulfide ores, typified by those in the Carpentaria region of Northern Australia, the way forward proposed is sulfur fixation at the mine site employing the highly exothermic reaction of SO2 with dolomite, followed by encapsulation of sulfated dolomite in fused ore slag. This releases enough energy for direct ore smelting to individual metal products. However, without CCS the strategy would be unacceptable because of greenhouse gas emissions. The scheme is advocated for direct ore smelting at McArthur River. As a result, the environmental problems of disposal of flotation tailings are avoided. Also, highly energy intensive ultra-fine grinding is eliminated, as indeed froth flotation itself, with overall very significant energy savings and exceptionally high increases in metals recovery. Zinc and lead recoveries approaching 99&nbsp;per cent are predicted to be entirely feasible.

Surface mining operations typically require run-of-mine material to be sized for further processing. In-pit crushing facilities serve this need, as stationary, semi-mobile or fully mobile units. Although in particular fully mobile crushing facilities have been in use for over half of a century, other surface mining techniques have typically been implemented. However, with increasing operating costs in truck and shovel operations, and other economic considerations, mobile crushing plants are increasingly a viable option. The operational and economical parameters in relation to the optimal surface mining equipment selection will be reviewed. The role of the mobile crushing technology within the continuous vs. noncontinuous surface mining operation and basis for mine planning are also discussed. Current applications and respective case studies will be reviewed. Key performance indicators will be presented. These performance parameters can be viewed as a tool to aid in the equipment selection process. The future direction for further research and development in mobile crushing facilities will also be presented.

In support of the development of its Liberian iron ore project, ArcelorMittal Mining Research and Development (AM Mining R&amp;D) has performed characterisation and beneficiation test work on drill core samples received from the proposed mine area. In addition to this, a sinter feed product was composed by blending and processing the drill cores in order to predict sintering performance of the ore. This article presents the methodology used to prepare the drill core blend for characterisation, as well as describe the sinter pot trial. The effect of composition on electrical conductivity (resistivity), viscosity and liquidus temperature of the slags encountered in electric smelting of PGM containing suphide concentrates is reviewed, along with the relationsip between slag composition, slag-matte separation and metal losses to slag. Optimization of slag composition at furnace temperature is attempted on the basis of opposite and parabolic trends of the viscosity-conductivity relationships of the slags. The importance of surface tension of slags is emphasized using available and estimated information which are grouped into a useful correlation. These values are coupled with or incorporated into slag viscosity plots to illustrate the correlation between the two factors, which influence slag-matte separation as well as refractory attack. The electrode in the slag-resistance furnace is the central factor in the design and operation of the furnace by its role of conveying the smelting power. The obvious parameters are the size and positioning in the slag bath, which are defined by slag resistively, furnace resistance, cell constant and power input. The flow of heat generated by the electrode current determines the energy distribution and furnace dimensions creating viscosity profiles, which in turn affect flow conditions. Thus the flow of slag and matte are discussed in conjunction with the furnace geometry, stirring action of the electrodes, buoyancy and electromagnetic effects. The action of the electric furnace as a settler is discussed. The rectangular furnace is considered as a channel reactor in this analysis, and the action of the electrodes is described to indicate a balanced settling rate in the area of electrode action. Discussion of the design and production capacity of the electric furnace, with reference too perating current, power input, furnace dimensions and electrode size, are based on considerations derived mainly from slag properties such as its resistively, viscosity and liquidus temperature.

Imaging is a fundamental requirement when characterizing minerals, ores and related products. Images are used for presentation, texture analysis, characterization, image analysis, identification, etc. The image mode that is utilized is dependent upon the application, mineral properties and available instruments. Different instruments produce images that display different features; in order of increasing complexity they are: hand specimens, a non-polarizing microscope, polarizing optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), low vacuum SEM, microprobe, secondary ion mass spectrometer, staining, cathodoluminescence, tomography and others. Image analysis uses images produced with either an optical microscope or a SEM, but the SEM images are superior in this application.

Better slag valorization is part of improving the sustainability of steel, stainless steel and non- ferrous metal production processes. Besides, it can improve the sustainability of other products and production processes as well. A sound and well established slag valorization is beneficial for the overall economics, marketing and appreciation of the metallurgical process and its products. On 6-7 April 2009, the First International Slag Valorisation Symposium was held in Leuven, Belgium. This paper gives a brief summary of the symposium, providing an overview of slag valorization opportunities. The authors believe that high temperature process slags can have interesting applications and that within the next 10 to 20 years slags will need such valorization options in order to compete with other materials and get general support for further production. On the other hand, the authors also expect a higher demand for slags for the production of various materials. High temperature processes should anticipate on the growing opportunities for valorization of slags and increase the resilience of their process by better understanding slag processing, slag quality and material requirements. More interdisciplinary research efforts are required to reach this level of knowledge for the different high temperature processes. Such an interdisciplinary research platform was recently established at KULeuven, Belgium, named SMART-PRO2 (Sustainable Materialization of Residues from Thermal Processes into Products).

Geotechnical monitoring is a key element of the successful management of a block cave mine. The interrelationships between production and various monitoring datasets are often not realized due to a lack of data integration and appropriate 3D visualization. Timely delivery of information to ensure best cave management practices is only possible with an integrated cave management system. At Rio Tinto, a state-of-the-art cave management system (CaveCAD) has been designed and developed in cooperation with Mira Geoscience to integrate and analyze vast datasets and report this as instructive information regarding the current \u201cstatus\u201d of the cave.

New Gold Inc. had commissioned Orica to assist with the design of the drawbell blasting at New Afton Underground copper/gold block cave at Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. Orica have had much success in developing the single-shot drawbell method at Freeport Indonesia in 2001 in the Deep Ore Zone and they will be using it exclusively in their new Grasberg Underground Operation. RioTinto Northparkes have also used the single shot drawbell blasting in their Second Lift E26 Project and even in the E48 orebody which is a post undercut block cave, realising the safety and operational benefits of this blasting method.
