The effect of transition elements which form binary solid solution upon the recrystallization temperature of zirconium has been investigated. All additions raised the recrystallization temperature. A correlation is obtained between the logarithm of the rate of change of recrystallization temperature with atomic percent solute and the free atom ground state electron configuration of the solute element. ThE work of Abrahamson, et al., on dilute binary solid-solution alloys indicated a correlation between the free-atom ground state electron configuration of the solute and either the brittle-ductile transition or recrystallization temperature. These studies were carried out on bcc base materials. The implication is that the outer s and d electrons of the solute are the prime determinant of the absolute rate of change of recrystallization or transition temperature. Furthermore, the limit of linearity has been shown to be a function of solute electron configuration for recrystallization in iron and vanadium. To date no Complete systematic recrystallization study of dilute binary zirconium base alloys has been made. It is the purpose of this study to note whether the change in solvent structure from bcc to hcp will influence the correlation. It was also desired to learn more of the role of the electron configuration of the solvent on recrystallization temperature. PROCEDURE All alloys were made using 99.87 pct Zr with 0.01 Cr, 0.04 Fe, 0.006 Hf, 0.003 Mg, 0.003 Mn, 0.003 N, and 0.080 0 (132 BHN). The solute elements were 99.9 pct pure. According to the published binary phase diagrams6 and metallographic examinations at X750, all alloys used were solid solutions. The alloys were arc melted and remelted six times in the form of cubic 200-g buttons under an argon atmosphere. They were then hot pressed at 950°C to 0.450 in., upset pressed to 0.350 in., and annealed at 800°C for 1 hr. The specimens were then Blanchard ground to 0.250 in., removing 0.050 in. from each side. The grain size of the material at this stage was found to be 8000 100 grains per sq mm. The specimens were then cold rolled to 0.130 in. and cold pressed to 0.125 in., yielding 50 1 pct cold work. All alloys were then chemically analyzed for the principal addition. The interstitial contents remained at the values of the starting material when checked on random alloy specimens. The rolled sheet was cut into 6.75 by 0.25-in. lengths and heat treated in a gradient furnace for 1 hr. The gradient was 250o to 900°C over the 6-in. length, recorded continuously by six thermocouples resting on each specimen. Control was 3oC, accomplished at the hot end. The recrystallization temperature was determined metallographically using polarized light. The criterion chosen was the point on the specimen showing the first recrystallized grain at a constant magnification, X200. Specimens were repeated, and the agreement was found to be 3°C. Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) can be specifically tailored for use by the commercial explosives industry to calculate risk to employees and the public from commercial explosives facilities and operations. This methodology has several advantages over the American Table of Distances (ATD) which is solely a Quantity Distance (Q/D) analysis. While the ATD has remained essentially the same for 100 years, the safety of commercial explosives in storage has increased immensely. However, the concepts behind QRA calculations are not as intuitive and even at the end of the calculations the values of risk must be compared to something. A few regimes for assessing an acceptable level of risk are discussed in this paper. Risk levels for various United States Federal entities and international agencies are highlighted and suggestions for acceptable risk criteria for individuals and groups are provided. Referencing risk levels from normal daily activities is also done in this paper to make relative the accepted risk criteria. This paper presents some relevant individual risks for everyday activities and some scenarios for group risk for comparison. Individual risk is a straightforward concept however group risk is more complicated. This paper aims to clarify these concepts and provide means to communicate them to the public.

The CSA Mine is located in Cobar, New South Wales and is operated by Glencore. Large scale underground production started from 1965, with zinc, lead, silver and copper extracted in the past. The current operations focus on copper, with a silver co-product.From 2014 to 2016, Cobar Management Pty Ltd (CMPL) undertook a major capital project to upgrade the primary ventilation system at the CSA Mine. This involved the development of ten raises using full-face raise boring from surface to a depth of 1450 m. The total length of the raises was approximately 2500 m. Geotechnical conditions were identified as a key project risk during the early planning stages of the project. Timely quantification of the geotechnical risks was required to minimise project delays and cost overruns. Geotechnical investigations were planned and conducted for each raise prior to pilot drilling and full-face back reaming.Nine of the ten raises had final wall camera and laser baseline surveys completed following full-face reaming. The surveys were conducted progressively, allowing ongoing back analysis and calibration of geotechnical evaluations as the project advanced.This paper presents the design and planning process of the raise bored excavations. It details the geotechnical investigation work undertaken to mitigate the geotechnical risks and the challenges and learnings from the project including the benefits of close collaboration between the parties involved.CITATION:Sidea, D and Brettell, T M, 2017. The Bureau of Mines conducted a comprehensive study of the Kanab, Kolob, Kaiparowits, and Harmony coalfields of southwestern Utah to obtain additional information and to determine the potentials of these coalfields as sources of energy for steam-electric power-generating plants. Field examinations were made to ascertain the geologic structure and the stratigraphy of the coalfields, the accessibility of the coal-bearing strata, and the general nature of the coal-bearing strata and the terrain. Many mines, both active and abandoned, were examined, and key personnel in the coal industry in the area were consulted. Available analyses of southwestern Utah coals were compiled, and tentative conclusions regarding the rank and quality of the coals were drawn. Coals have been classified by rank according to the standards established by the American Society for Testing and Materials in 1964. The Parr formula for moist, mineral-matter-free British thermal units has been used to calculate the rank of each sample, except as otherwise noted. Water resources related to the areas of the coal reserves also were investigated. Existing literature and maps pertaining to the geology of the areas were reviewed. Production potentials of the coalfields and economic conditions affecting the possible utilization of the coal reserves as sources of energy for steam-powered electricity-generating plants were investigated and analyzed. The data obtained and the conclusions reached as a result of this study are included in this document. The total reserves of subbituminous A and high-volatile bituminous C coals in the fields of southwestern Utah are estimated to be at least 8 billion short tons at depths generally less than 2,000 feet. It appears likely that this estimate will be increased as additional data are made available through exploration and other investigations. Sufficient coal is available in four southwestern Utah counties to supply three or four large steam-electric plants. If the States involved grant water rights to companies planning to build steam-electric plants, the cost of producing power with coal might be attractive and might justify the construction of one or more of these plants.

Coals from the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales treated in the Port Kembla coal preparation plants of Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd. differ supstantially in their characteristics. Knpwledge of performance not only enables comparison and promotes better control, but also provides the means for predicting results.Evaluation of performance of cleaning equipment has been made in terms of probable error (Ep). Results for Baum jigs, a Chance cone, heavy medium cyclones, and water washing cyclones were examined. The efficiency factors derived from the probable error were applied to the float and sink analysis, mathematically simulating operating conditions. This method was applied to the Balgownie seam.The Balgownie seam lies between the Bulli and Wongawilli seams in the coal measures of the South Coast and mining on a large scale began recently in the Bulli area. It is known locally as the Four Foot seam and exhibits rather difficult washability characteristics, due to a comparatively high middlings content. These properties and the relatively high inherent ash make careful selection of cleaning equipment essential for optimum recovery. The prediction technique is used to determine the possible results when this coal is cleaned in the Port Kembla plants. Predicted values are compared with results from full scale trial washings demonstrating the validity and accuracy of the technique.Applications of result forecasting are listed.

This paper documents a field survey using long-range terrestrial digital photogrammetry at the Palabora open-pit mine, South Africa, for multi-scale characterization of rock mass discontinuities. Stereomodels covering the entire mine were generated based on photographs taken from a distance of 1600m across the pit, using a series of f=20-400mm lenses. Details on the methodology used and its accuracy are discussed. Preliminary results on discontinuity orientation, persistence and intensity are presented, highlighting the effect of observation scale. The potential uses of long-range terrestrial digital photogrammetry in open-pit mine and large natural rock slope environments is emphasized. The use of an f=400mm lens from distances larger than 1.5km may represent an important step forward in the geotechnical characterization of inaccessible remote rock faces.

The Si-0 equilibrium in liquid iron was investigated in some detail by Gokcen and Chipman1 who reported equilibrium constants of the following reactions: In each case the thermodynamic equilibrium constant K was obtained by extrapolating K' to infinite dilution. Their results on reaction [I] were consistent with those of earlier observers, and there seems to be little doubt as to the approximate validity of the equilibrium product determined. On the other hand, the results on reactions [2] and [3] indicated unusual curvilinear relationships between the activity coefficients of silicon and of oxygen and the silicon concentration. Since a linear relation is observed in all other similar instances, it was concluded that some source of error had affected the gas-metal equilibrium relationships. Recently the authors undertook a restudy of these equilibria with the view especially to establishing the equilibrium constant of reaction [2]. Their experiments, however, were discontinued before a tbroughly satisfactory answer had been obtained and consequently have remained unpublished until the present time. Quite recently Matoba, Gunji, and Kuwana2 published the results of a very thorough study of these equilibria. It is the purpose of the present note to Compare these three sets of experimental data, a comparison which leads to Confirmation of the results of Matoba and coworkers. The experimental arrangements described by Dutilloy and Chipman were employed. A controlled mixture of Hz, H,0, and argon was led into the induction furnace over the surface of the Fe-Si melt contained in a silica crucible. On account of the slow approach to equilibrium, runs were continued for at least 8 hr and, in some cases, as much as 12 hr. Samples were taken by means of silica tubes at the start and during the final 4-hr period of each run. Out of twelve runs only seven appeared to have approached equilibrium with sufficient certainty to be reported here. The results of these experiments, all at 1600°c, are shown by the triangles in Fig. 1. Equilibrium was approached from both oxidizing and reducing conditions and the direction of approach is indicated by the shape of the triangle. Attempts to extend the study to higher silicon concentrations were unsuccessful on account of the transfer of silica from the metal bath to the upper portions of the crucible by means of a silicon-monoxide mechanism. Matoba, Gunji, and Kuwana used similar methods and approached equilibrium from both sides. Their results at three temperatures are shown by the solid lines of Fig. 1. A line corresponding to 1600 deg is interpolated from their equations and is shown by the dotted line. The results of Gokcen and Chipman at 1600 deg in the range 0.02 to 2.0 pct Si are also shown. At concentrations up to about 0.6 pct Si, these investigators approached equilibrium from both directions, and their results in this range appear to be trustworthy. Above 1 pct Si, however, all of their experiments involved oxidation only, as shown by a decrease in the silicon content of the bath. It now seems certain that they failed to reach equilibrium at these higher silicon concentrations and that the curvilinear relation shown by their results is incorrect. It is evident that their results in the lower silicon range are in good agreement with those of Matoba and coworkers. In fact, a straight line drawn through their results would parallel the dotted line and would differ from it by only 0.05 in log K. The new data also lie close to that line. It may thus be concluded that the three sets of data are in good agreement and that the equations proposed by Matoba and coworkers for reaction [2] are satisfactory . Long, high capacity, highly tensioned, cable bolts (strand bolts), stiff enough to be installed with resin like a solid bolt, yet flexible enough to be used in any lengths, have been widely used in Australian coal mines since the early 1990?s. A brief history and update on recent developments of this technology is provided. The first major US trial of this Australian technology, has recently taken place at BHP Billiton?s San Juan longwall coal mine in New Mexico. Thirty-five foot long, high capacity, highly tensioned, post-grouted cable bolts are being used to provide active secondary support of intersections in areas where operator safety and life of mine considerations are paramount, and standing support cannot be installed for reasons of equipment access. The cable bolts are resin anchored into overlying sandstone channels, tensioned, and post-grouted. The installation procedure and support results for these highly tensioned cable bolts are given.

This paper describes the successful management and construction of the 5.18 m (17 ft) diameter, segmentally lined, North Dorchester Bay CSO storage tunnel in Boston, MA. This 3,300 m (10,830 ft) long tunnel was mined through variable soft ground with only 6 m (20 ft) of cover, using an earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine. These extensive data collected from the projects unique automated and internet accessible geotechnical and TBM monitoring system, will be examined and used to explore the relationships between geological conditions, TBM operating parameters and measured settlements. The paper will also discuss the use of screw revolutions as an indicator of muck volume.

Modern constructions of electric ferroalloy furnaces are still based on applying in the lower "liquid" areas the standard carbon materials. What can be illustrated by the experience from several years, in the part of tap hole, hearth walls and bottom, is that so-called carbon or semigraphite microporous materials are successfully being applied. These materials, compared to the standard carbon, give better resistance to the attack by liquid metal and other wear factors. Generally this group includes materials characterised by considerable share of pores of diameters below1µm (significantly exceeding 90% of total porosity). The microporosity increases the resistance to the infiltration of the liquid metal. The effect of microporosity can be obtained by introducing silicon (or its compound) additive to materials based on electrically (or gas) calcined anthracites, electrographite and binder. Moreover, by introducing other ceramic additives, the microporous materials are more resistant to dissolution by the liquid metal. Observing the trends of "improving the materials" in the last years, it is clearly seen that the share of non-carbon additives is bigger and bigger, so we can reasonably speak of rather carbon-ceramic materials. In this paper, the survey of the most important quality criteria, which must be met by the carbon furnace linings, as well as the new testing methods will be presented.

In 1980, gold, silver, and pit and quarry construction materials were the principal minerals produced in the Dominion of Fiji. The combined value of these minerals totaled some $7.2 million,2 over 85% of all mineral production, Production of cement, sand and gravel, and quarry products continued to increase, but gold and silver production from Fiji's only operating mine declined slightly from the previous year's level. Mineral exploration has been carried out by U.S., Australian, British, Canadian, West German, and South African companies since the early 1960's, and a high level of activity was maintained throughout 1980. At the end of 1980, some 40 mineral prospecting licenses covering over 4,300 square kilometers were in force, and 19 applications were under consideration by the Mineral Resources Department. Total expenditures by mining companies on land base projects exceeded $6 million in 1980.

The Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) specification B105.1 “Welded Steel Conveyor Pulleys” adequately defines standard pulleys for most aggregate material handling applications. However, many aggregate applications demand pulleys of higher capacity and reliability than that offered by CEMA pulleys. This paper examines the CEMA Pulley Standard and pulley specifications for aggregate applications requiring greater capacity and reliability than the CEMA Pulley Standard. Higher reliability increases the uptime and has a lower total cost of ownership.

"An AG/SAG mill was commissioned at the Brunswick Mine concentrator in October 1998. This paper discusses the original liner design for the bi-directional AG/SAG mill, observed liner wear, subsequent liner design modifications, and benefits. The mill liners consist of steel top hat shell liners, steel end liners, rubber grates and rubber lined pulp lifters.Lifter profile and plate thickness measurements were made on monthly shop days. Trends of wear rates were used to project when liners required replacement. Wear profile information was also used to determine where liner re-design would improve wear life or minimize scrap loss. Charge motion simulation modeling was used as a tool to assist liner design modifications.INTRODUCTIONThe Noranda Inc. Brunswick Mine, located near Bathurst, New Brunswick, is a large underground lead/zinc mine with a nominal production rate of 10,000 tonnes per day. The Brunswick concentrator commenced operation in 1964 with conventional surface crushing followed by rod and ball milling to reduce run of mine ore to the required size to feed two parallel flotation circuits. In 1998 the AG (autogenous grinding) mill was commissioned for a nominal production rate of 9,000 tonnes per day replacing two surface crushing plants, three rod mills and three primary ball mills. In May of 1999 the mining rate was increased and the service of the AG mill was changed to a SAG (semi-autogenous grinding) mill with the addition of 4 inch steel balls (4% volume). The mill operates in closed circuit with 0.66 meter horizontal cyclones to produce a ground product of 90 micron nominal size (K80).The AG/SAG mill liners are steel (Norsteel, chrome-moly steel) with rubber grates and rubber lined pulp lifters.The original liner design was based on studying other AG/SAG mills and recommendations by the liner supplier, Norcast. Design factors taken into account were total cost of lining (including material and labour), protection of mill shell and impact on operating performance."

El presente texto describe el sistema epitermal de Arcata, situado en Arequipa, Perú. Arcata es un distrito epitermal de sulfuración intermedia rico en plata y metales base, cuya mineralización se hospeda en vetas de rumbo predominante noroeste y movimiento principal paralelo a la inclinación que forman una estructura de fosa (graben). Las vetas poseen texturas de relleno de espacios abiertos como bandeados costriformes, en cucarda, crecimientos en peine y brechas, con ganga de cuarzo, calcita, rodonita y rodocrosita. Por su parte, los minerales de mena más comunes son galena, esfalerita, calcopirita, con los metales preciosos hospedados en sulfosales de plata (pirargirita y tetrahedrita). Asimismo, se ha identificado una compleja secuencia paragenética con varios pulsos responsables de la mineralización económica.

Experimental petrology may be used to accurately constrain PTX conditions in order to calibrate and understand geologic processes. This method may be used to answer postulated questions, by recreating known geologic conditions and observing changes in the experimental charges. The purpose of this project was to determine the eutectic composition and temperature in the ternary system PbS-FeS-ZnS ¦ (Ag2S), at ambient and elevated pressures and elucidate if the sulfides of the Broken Hill orebody may have been partially molten during highgrade (granulite facies) metamorphism. The study determined the eutectic temperature and composition in the system PbS-FeS-ZnS to be 800¦2¦C and 62.5% PbS, 30.5%FeS, 7% ZnS respectively, at one atmosphere, and the eutectic temperature at 27 kbars was found to be 960¦C¦10¦C, with a eutectic composition enriched in ZnS relative to the one atmosphere eutectic. the addition of lwt.% Ag2S to the system depresses the eutectic temperature to 772¦2¦C at 1 atmosphere and below 810¦5¦C at 5 kbars. The conditions of peak metamotphism for the cental and southern areas of the Broken Hill Block, New South Wales, Australia , lie above the solidus of the PbS-FeS-ZnS-Ag2S system, strongly suggesting that partial melting occurred in the orebody.

Hurricane Katrina caused significant damage to transportation structures on the Gulf coast in August, 2005, including the destruction of the US 90 Bridge over Biloxi Bay, Mississippi. Part of the successful design/build proposal for the replacement bridge included a comprehensive test pile program of indicator piles and load test piles in the geotechnical investigation program. A total of 22 indicator piles were installed on the project using the pile driving analyzer to monitor the pile behavior. Five load tests were performed: two axial Statnamic, two lateral Statnamic, and one static axial. The results of the test pile program established driving criteria for production piles that included end-of-drive blow counts and pile tip elevations with an appropriate allowance for setup. The program also confirmed that the planned installation equipment and techniques of GC Constructors, a joint venture of Massman Construction Co., Kiewit Southern Co., and Traylor Bros., Inc., would install the piles to the design tip elevations before production piles began. An extensive program of restrike measurements at a range of times after initial driving of the indicator piles provided a systematic documentation of pile setup in the soil profiles on the site. These resistance values were used to develop a dimensionless setup factor ?S? as the ratio of the restrike resistance to the end of drive resistance. This factor varied from 1.5 for piles penetrating clays and tipped in sand to 3.0 for piles bearing completely in clay and helped establish an end-of drive blow count that included an allowance for setup. The CAPWAP analyses of restrike data with setup and the load test data were used to confirm the design unit side shear and end bearing values developed from the borings and static capacity calculations and to select the design pile lengths.

Some few years ago, when the cruiser “Brooklyn” was passing through the fairway to the southwest of the Battery, the ship being fully equipped with stores, etc., and therefore at her maximum draft, she grounded quite heavily upon some obstruction, and received injuries which necessitated her docking at the Brooklyn navy yard, where extensive repairs had to be made on her damaged bottom.

Keywords: Al2O3-SiCW, Ceramic Matrix Composite, Carbothermal Reduction, Kaolin The formations of Al2O3-SiCw composite have been obtained in situ by carbothermal reduction of a mixture of kaolin and activated carbon. The reaction temperature was controlled at between 1400°C to 1600°C. The synthesized products were mixtures of alumina and silicon carbide in the form of whiskers. The effects of milling time of precursors and reaction temperature are presented. XRD and SEM analyses indicate complete reaction of precursors to yield Al2O3-SiC as product powders, with the SiC having porous and whisker morphology.

"An economical, pollution-free process has been developed for the hydrometallurgical extraction of copper from sulphide ores. The extracted copper, in the form of cuprous chloride (CuC/), is converted by reduction to copper metal. The metal is melted and fire -refined into wire bars which meet the standards of electrolytic tough pitch (ETP) copper wirebars. IntroductionThe successful development of the Cyprus Copper Process has been an evolutionary series of events covering a time span of some nine years. The original process, based on an electrolytic membrane cell principle , was abandoned in 1975 because of technical, economic and pollution problems. During the past four years, the pilot plant has been reconstructed based on a new flowsheet and operated successfully in several campaigns, some for as long as four months. The pilot-plant hydro section operates at a 225-lblhr copper rate. In October 1977, a feasibility study was completed by Jacobs Engineering, Pasadena, California. The study showed favourable economic and technical feasibility. Jacob's studies in 1978-79 revealed favourable comparative economics with other known pyrohydro processes and favourable economies of scale.The Cyprus Copper Process converts copper concentrates of varying composition into copper metal, which has been proven to be equivalent in every way to electrolytic tough pitch copper, suitable for electrical applications. This is accomplished at capital and operating costs which are estimated to be lower than those associated with any other known currently applicable technology. Also, the total energy requirement is equal to or less than any other known process and the process is essentially pollution free."
