In 1951, Tata Steel became the pioneer in Asia by setting up its first ever washery in West Bokaro Colliery. The first beneficiation plant used to produce clean coal of 19% ash with chance cone. Feed size of chance washers were -75 mm to +6 mm. The fine coal (-6 mm) were used directly. With change in technology,in 1986,chance cones were replaced by DM cyclones and coal was washed in two circuits. In the coarse circuit -13 mm to +0.5 mm coal was washed in two stages while the fine coal of -0.5 mm was treated in froth floatation cell. With further improvement in the process the higher ash raw coal was feed to produce clean coal of 13% ash. In 1998, DSM cyclones were replaced by scrolled Evolute design cyclone which has Ep of 0.020 to 0.025 ranges resulting in increase efficiency of separation. With the increase in demand of clean coal, lower seam proportion has increased in raw coal production. The washability studies of individual seams indicated large difference in the seam characteristics in terms of washability and specific gravity cut points of the individual seams. So washing all seams together had resulted in frequent change in the character of coal and warrants frequent changes in the operating parameters of the plant in which the separating efficiency comes down and ultimately resulted in yield loss initially. With increase in knowledge and experience in coal washing the solution to this problem was achieved by adopting, seam-wise washing which is enabling process engineers by keeping set point for longer periods there by to enhance the separation efficiency. The consequences of rock blasting with explosives are directly related to the accuracy of drilling and, because they have an effect on fragmentation and ground level, they should be controlled to ensure a problem free production, increase work safety and reduce environment impact. Safety control is one of the most important processes in detonation, since it can compromise the worker security on site and, eventually, neighboring communities. Due to the technology advancements, it is possible to build a hole deviation control device with “of the shelf” parts, and for that reason the authors decided to evaluate the possibility of measuring hole deviation by creating a portable prototype using an electronic sensor capable of measuring the acceleration on objects, that is, to measure the own acceleration of a system, known as "accelerometer" and a micro-controller to handle and treat data. The main idea behind this paper is to validate the power of the Euler method, given the stepping limitations of the sensor and micro controller in order to reproduce of the hole shape. A case study was carried out, comparing the measurements of borehole deviations made by a traditional equipment and the prototype. A mobile application was also created in order to recover and treat and display the data to the user. For validation of the prototype, several holes were measured using the two devices. A residue analysis was used to validate the data obtained. After analyzing and confirming the effectiveness of the new equipment, the normality tests prove a symmetric distribution with null expected residual mean and minimum variance. Consequently, the accuracy of the prototype is evidenced. Thus, the authors aspire to emphasize the potential of using these sensors allied to a traditional numerical method for analysis of hole deviation.

In September, a fleet of 363-t (400-st) Liebherr trucks became operational in Brazil and have already begun moving iron ore in Para state. Prior to the arrival of the the trucks the Brazilian fleet relied on trucks up to 218 t (240 st). With the addition of the 363 t (400 st) trucks, the fleet has since experienced the high productivity offered by Liebherr T 282 B trucks.

COMPLETED in November, 1943, at a cost of over $1,500,000, Elk River colliery of the Crow's Nest Pass Coal Company, Limited, has been laid out and equipped for an ultimate annual production of 1,000,000 tons and replaces the recently closed Coal Creek plant, which has been operated by the Company for the past forty-five years. The project has involved the opening of mines in three seams, the construction of a complete set of colliery buildings, including a modern preparation plant of 360 tons per hour capacity, and the laying out of the necessary yard tracks and spur connecting the new development with the Company-owned Morrissey, Fernie and Michel railway, which, in turn, connects with the Canadian Pacific railway at Fernie. The colliery is three and a half miles east of Fernie, B.C., near the southern end of the Crow's Nest coal field, which contains the largest and most important body of coal in the Province of British Columbia. The coal-bearing horizon is the Kootenay formation, present in the form of a syncline covering an area of 230 square miles. Most of the coal seams occur in the lower 2,000 feet of the formation, the covering beds being largely coarse sandstones and conglomerates of great thickness, the presence of which accounts largely for the preservation of the coal measures. James McEvoy, in the report of the Geological Survey of Canada for the year 1900, states that the basin appears to contain a fairly constant coal content of nearly 172 feet in 23 seams of a thickness of one foot or over. Coal has been mined in the Fernie district since 1897 and the first shipments were made from Coal Creek colliery in the following year, over the then newly constructed British Columbia Southern railway. Since that time, a total of over 16,000,000 tons of coal has been produced, an average of 350,000 tons per year. The7ears of peak production were 1910, 1912, and 1913, with an all-time high of 924,000 tons in 1913. The lowest output in the history of Coal Creek was that for the year 1933, when only 60,340 tons were produced, the colliery being closed for some months. Present production from Elk River colliery averages 1,150 tons per day, the output being considerably less than it could be were sufficient man-power available.

Mintek is currently developing a design approach for the heap leaching of low-grade primary copper sulphide material. Since the leaching of chalcopyrite requires elevated temperatures, the generation and management of heat within the heap is crucial. Furthermore, the precipitation of iron needs to be managed to prevent premature blinding of the heap, and acid consumption needs to be limited to contain cost and limit the dissolution of gangue impurities. Standard column tests using jacketed 1-m and/or 6-m columns do not allow accurate prediction of temperature changes and heat generation in an actual heap. Mintek therefore utilizes a computer model to calculate the energy balance and heat generation with time, based on the measured sulphide oxidation rates in the column. The temperature in the column is then adjusted to reflect the computer-predicted temperature in an actual heap. Using this approach, an overall copper extraction of 70% was achieved in 120 days, using 1-metre columns, when treating an ore blend containing 1.36% chalcopyrite, 0.23% chalcocite, 0.07% covellite, 3.8% pyrite and silicate gangue (92%). The chalcopyrite contribution to the total copper content in the feed was 75%. This was followed by 6-m columns using a similar approach, and the column results will be validated on a 23,000 tonne test heap. Key Words: heap; bioleach; chalcopyrite

As part of an over-all laboratory and plant test program to determine mixing ad other techniques for a more economic use of bentonite as an iron ore pellet binder, a settling test for measuring the bentonite content within a pellet or a batch of pellets has been developed. Through this test, it has been shown that dry fracture load is directly proportional to bentonite content in batches of pellets, but inversely propor tional to bentonite content in individual pellets of the same batch. This apparent paradox is explained by a negative correlation between a pellet's size and its bentonite content and the fact that large pellets can withstand a higher fracture load than small pellets. In past attempts to characterize green and dry iron ore pellets, the authors found large variations in the results of strength tests on closely sized pellets from the same batch.' Reasons advanced for such variations in the quality of pellets in which the binder is bentonite were the presence of internal flaws and the nonuniform distribution of the binder. Even when resulting pellet strength is good, there is still the question of whether the same strength could have been attained through a more effective use of a smaller amount of bentonite. The authors' own and other studies 2-3 have pointed out the strong dependence of pellet strength on the degree of "mixedness" of the iron ore concentrate and the bentonite binder. It is known 1,2 that the equilibrium between titanium metal, TiCl2 , and TiCl3, in a solvent of molten metal chlorides, is influenced both by the total amount of dissolved titanium and by the type of solvent. Assuming that the trivalent titanium forms the complex ion Ti111 Cl4, the equilibrium reaction may be expressed by the following equation, (Me) TiIII cl4+ 1/2 Ti = 3/2 TiII cl2+ (Me) Cl The ideal ionic equilibrium constant for this reaction is, Where the N's are the molar ionic fractions in the equilibrium melt, and (Me) the different types of cations present in the equilibrium mixture. This report describes the operation and maintenance of the Mobile Inert Gas Generator for use in the Remote Sealing System for fighting underground coal mine fires. Seals are emplaced in mine passageways between the fire zone and the rest of the mine isolating the fire zone from the mine. The seals consist of fly ash that has been pneumatically conveyed via inert gas through a borehole connecting the surface and the passageway, Inert gas is used as the fly ash seal transport medium (instead of fresh air) since the introduction of large volumes of fresh air in the vicinity of the fire zone would be undesirable. The inert gas generation equipment is mounted on two flatbed trailers, the "hot" trailer and the "cold" trailer. The hot trailer contains the combustion and cooling equipment. The cold trailer contains the moisture removal and compression equipment necessary to convey the fly ash. The system is self-sufficient and requires only fuel and fly ash deliveries. The Inert Gas Generator has been thoroughly performance tested and has been operated in the field for approximately 200 hr. The system was employed in the demonstration of the entire Remote Mine Sealing System at the Jenney Mine in the Fall of 1978. The system is currently available for fighting any future underground coal mine fires.

NIOSH has recently completed a study of the interaction between polyurethane (PUR) and coal mine roof in order to determine the mechanism of reinforcement, in both highly fractured rock and unfractured rock. Four case studies of PUR rein­forcement are presented. At a West Virginia site, a borehole camera revealed the location of roof voids and guided the PUR injection. By injecting polyure­thane into a zone from 0.6 to 1.8 m (2?6 ft.) high in the roof, a roof beam was created and ongoing intersection falls were halted. In another highly fractured roof in a western Pennsylvania mine, a total of 5.8 cm (2.3 in.) of rubbleized rock was found in a zone up to 3 m (10 ft.) into the roof. Untargeted PUR injection filled approximately 1/2 of the fractures. These two case studies showed that it is not necessary to fill up 100% of the void space to create stability. In the other two field sites, polyurethane was injected into weak, but unfractured roof. Post-injec­tion video monitoring showed that weak bedding planes were hydraulically wedged open and polyure­thane injected along bedding. The reinforcement value of this injection method is limited because of the wafer-thin layer of PUR introduced along bedding, and the lack of a PUR ??webbing?? which would serve as a structural framework to provide strength. It was determined that video inspection prior to PUR injection can aid in identifying the fracture zones to target, and minimize ??blind?? pumping and loss of PUR.

A study of the high magnification of some inorganic fibers which are found in nature or produced in the laboratory, has been conducted with the electron microscope. This series of electron microqraphs shows the important morphological differences exhibited by potassium-lead silicate, lead-aluminum silicate, chrysotile, wollastonite, silicon nitride, potassium titanate, cobalt chrysotile, magnesio-fluor-richterite, fluor-richterite, refractory oxide fiber, silicon carbide, massive serpentine, and palygorskite. A ribbon or a thin lath 250-2500 A. wide is the structural form of potassium-lead silicate and lead-aluminum silicate. Chrysotile, cobalt chrysotile, and massive serpentine all have a tubular structure and a fairly uniform (150-300 A.) diameter. Wollastonite, potassium titanate, fluor-richterite, and magnesio-richterite crystals have a lath shape, and potassium titanate laths are laminated ribbons. Single fibers of silicon nitride and palygorskite are ribbons, and the silicon nitride sample contains many twins (branching fibers). Palyqorskite fibers are highly flexible and have cross-sectional measurements of 150-300 A. Silicon carbide fibers differ from other fibers because their structure consists of several different forms. The sample used in this study had, predominately, a margarite-type structure. The refractory oxide fiber lost, all its apparent fibrosity after being prepared for electron microscopic examination, and only irregular fragments are visible in the electron micrographs.

The objective of the present endeavor is to compare the performance of a pile raft system in foundation sand subjected to lateral loads. To study the behavior of pile raft system in sand a laboratory test was conducted on small scale model foundation system. The raft and pile was modeled by square concrete foundation of 250 mm x 250 mm x 15 mm in length, breadth and thickness and 25mm diameter and 250mm long circular pile located at the center of the raft. The system was tested under static lateral loads of 6.25N, 12.5N, 18.75N and 25 N respectively resting on dry Kasai River sand. A vertical surcharge pressure of 1.5kPa (10 kg) was applied on top of the model raft for each case. The results of the model tests have been simulated by a general purpose 3-D finite element software and the model has been validated with experimental results. The moments of the pile obtained from the model tests and those predicted by the numerical analyses for all the lateral loads matches reasonably well. For matching the trend of bending moments obtained from experiments, validation with theoretical results have been done with the help of Matlock and Reese (1960) approach for a single value of lateral loading. Moreover, a parametric study has been conducted with 5mX5mX0.3m raft size with 0.5m diameter and 5 meter long pile with increasing number of piles namely 2, 5 and 9 respectively to study the response in terms of moment and lateral deformation under available earthquake loadings, like Loma Prieta (1989) and Darfield Christchurch (2010). Bending moments of piles and load deformation curves for lateral loading have been studied for each case in which it is observed that the bending moments of pile significantly reduces (around 4 times) as the number of pile is increased to two, but it decreases to a nearly constant value (it saturates) as the number of pile is increased to five and nine. Moreover, the lateral deformation of piled raft system drastically reduces (around 2.4 times) for two pile system, and it saturates to a constant value with five and nine pile system. All these results indicate the constancy of stiffness irrespective of the number of piles in the piled raft.

Any defect activity resulting from an applied stimulus on a structure will generate a stress wave which travels in the medium under the laws of acoustics, thus the name of acoustic emission (AE). AE techniques can therefore provide information on the deformation of both surface and below ground structures, Two operating coal mines were monitored from the surface, and both mining activity and post mining microseismic activity were detected. The nature of the detected AE signals demonstrated that there were a range of deformation mechanisms in operation and that some predictive capabilities were possible with the technique.

"The new Amcor B9 paper mill in Botany, NSW, Australia, involved the design and construction of a new paper mill founded within the Botany Basin Sediments. There were numerous design and construction challenges to address, including tight settlement tolerances for the paper machine footings (6 mm total and 1/2000 mm differential limits), high variable and cyclic loads, deep (>25 m) bedrock and uncontrolled fill material across the site. The mill structure design incorporated a deep driven precast and CFA piled foundation solution, with a comprehensive swathe of testing to validate pile capacity and expected settlements. The pile design for the mill structure included the installation of approximately 1000 piles, with pile testing comprising dynamic testing and a static load test on precast piles. With consideration of Sydney’s increasing demand for development space in relative close proximity to the city’s CBD, industrial areas in the Botany Bay area are likely to make way for heavy or complex commercial and residential structures. Therefore, a better understanding of the engineering behaviour of sediments underlying these areas would allow for efficient foundation solutions. This paper presents a discussion on effective foundation testing techniques and the effects that the behaviour and characteristics of the Botany Bay sediments impose on deep piled solutions.2 PROJECT DETAILS2.1 New paper millThe project involved the construction of the largest recycled paper machine in Australia. The paper machine is 330 m (1080 ft) long, 22 m (72 ft) high, and capable of producing 1.6 km (1 mile) of paper per minute. Construction commenced in early 2011 and new paper mill officially opened in early 2013. The early works contract was awarded to Baulderstone Construction Pty. Ltd. (Lend Lease Corp. Ltd.), with the D&C contract awarded to a consortium headed by Leighton Contractors Pty. Ltd. (CPB Contractors Pty. Ltd.), which included Golder Associates Pty. Ltd. as the geotechnical designer and reviewer.2.2 Site history and effect on local topographyThe site has been used as a paper mill since 1902, and as such, has layers of uncontrolled fill and buried objects within the upper fill materials associated with historical industrial use. The fill material generally comprised of loose and very loose sands, with isolated pockets of cohesive materials, peats, pulped paper and general construction waste. In addition, during construction, underground storage tanks were identified at depth, indicating the historical extent of filling across the site was extensive. The presence of this generally uncontrolled fill was a factor for determining that the most cost effective foundation solution for the paper mill was piled foundations, to bypass these materials."

Efficient drill-and-blast performance is pivotal to the profitability of deep-level mines, where high operating costs and declining grades demand maximum throughput. This study investigated persistent fragmentation problems at a longhole stoping operation that suffered from simultaneous oversized rock blockages in 300 mm × 300 mm grizzlies and excessive fines. Fifty-one muckpile images from five blasted stopes were analysed with Split-Desktop. Although the overall F₈₀ was 287 mm, nominally suitable for the grizzly aperture, the Rosin- Rammler uniformity index of 0.80 revealed a highly inconsistent size distribution containing both boulders and fines. Existing drill patterns were then evaluated with the Aegis underground software, which showed negligible crack overlap at the toe owing to inadequate spacing and burden. Insufficient energy overlap between blastholes, particularly at the toe, was found to contribute to the coarse fragmentation, while excessive fines were attributed to the crushing and severely fractured zones of blastholes. Optimisation simulations demonstrated that an 89 mm blasthole diameter on a 2 m × 2 m pattern would overlap, aligning with Aegis requirements of balancing powder factor, break angle, and energy distribution. Implementing this revised pattern is expected to reduce secondary breaking, prevent ore-pass blockages, lower fines, and ultimately improve overall production efficiency. The methodology illustrates how integrated image analysis and modelling software can effectively diagnose and address fragmentation issues, particularly in underground longhole mining, where challenging blasting conditions require a balance between achieving optimal fragmentation and maintaining stope stability. This approach offers a cost-effective pathway to improving comminution performance in deeplevel mines.

The straight Y-shaped silica nanorods have been synthesized on Si wafer by thermal chemical evaporation of mixed powders of silica and graphite at 1300_ and condensation on Si substrate without assistance of any catalyst. The synthesized samples were characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy. The results suggested that the straight Y-shaped silica nanorods have uniform diameter about 50-200nm and neat smooth surface. The growth of such silica nanorods may be a result of the fluctuation of external conditions and internal structure faults causing a change in the growth direction of silica nanorods developed.

El uso de los procesos estocásticos y cadenas de Markov se ha desarrollado solo para estudios de probabilidades en la rama de las ciencias matemáticas y como una opción a las descripciones tradicionales en el campo del procesamiento de minerales, se realizó una comparación entre ambas metodologías para lo cual se cuenta previamente con varios análisis granulométrico proveniente de los molinos de Bolas industriales de la empresa Shougang Perú y pruebas granulometrías de Molienda de Sider-Perú, comparar en ambos estudios, como el probabilístico (Cadenas de Markov) y el cinético (Selección y fractura) ofrecen un buen acercamiento al resultado experimental, dando como una buena alternativa el primero por su uso del manejo estocástico.

Cu-Ag-Au mineralisation at Kluwih prospect in Eastern Java, Indonesia is related to a high-sulfidation hydrothermal system within a volcanic dome (2.35 × 1.7 km diameter). The mineralisation occurs mainly in steeply dipping, structurally-controlled quartz-enargite-pyrite veins (several centimetres to 2 m wide) and is hosted mainly in porphyritic dacite, volcaniclastic rocks and volcanic breccia of the dome and in an underlying andesite that yielded a zircon U-Pb age of 11.5 Ma.Short wave infrared spectrometer analyses were carried out for alteration mapping at Kluwih. There are two main stages of alteration produced by the hydrothermal activity. The alteration mineral assemblages indicate an advanced argillic alteration. The Cu mineralisation occurred in the form of enargite and subordinate chalcopyrite with an intergrown texture in the early stage. These mineralised veins are characterised by narrow pyrophyllite ± diaspore and dickite selvages (metres wide) and a peripheral K-muscovite envelope (sericitic alteration) up to 100 m wide. The K-muscovite envelope is zoned outward to Na-muscovite or Na-illite. Late-stage kaolinite and smectite alteration overprints the porphyritic dacite and may obscure the nature of early mica-clay alteration. The spatial distribution of different alteration assemblages suggests that the temperature of hydrothermal fluid increases with depth.Both the high-sulfidation mineralisation and advanced argillic alteration are suggested to be related to magmatic-hydrothermal fluids, which are likely to originate from an undiscovered deeper porphyry Cu-Au system below the porphyritic dacite. Based on alteration mapping results and comparisons to similar deposits, the porphyry intrusion could be up to 500 m below the volcanic dome. Geological uncertainty is an unavoidable characteristic of all mining projects since only limited information is available from sampling. Mine planning and development decisions with significant economic consequences are made when the geological heterogeneity is inherently uncertain. Geostatistical simulation is preferred over kriging because the methodology provides alternative property realizations that can be combined into a model of geological uncertainty. Geological uncertainty can be transferred into production uncertainty, which can help characterize the economic risk of the project. This paper presents a case study for the Pogo property, being prepared for development near Fairbanks, Alaska. The exact dimensions, grades and production predictions have been modified; however, the methodology is illustrative. The geostatistical methodology consists of (1) assembling the relevant drillhole data and establishing a suitable coordinate system, (2) calculating the target distribution, (3) creating a model of spatial correlation, (4) generating multiple realizations at a small scale and (5) linearly averaging all the realizations to the chosen selective mining unit (SMU) support size. The geostatistical model is then used to calculate production uncertainty.
