Picking up abandoned mining tenements and looking to recover remnant resources around old operations is an opportunity that comes with its own challenges and risks. Reliance on information released to government departments (such as the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) in Western Australia) by the previous owners, can compound the risk.This paper explores Alto Metals Ltd’s Lord Nelson and Lord Henry deposits and surrounds near the town of Sandstone in Western Australia. The Lord Nelson and Lord Henry open pits produced around 2 Mt of ore for over 250 koz of gold during production between 1999 and 2010. There has been no further work carried out in the area between 2010 and 2016. The deposits are open at depth and along strike.Alto Metals picked up the tenements in 2016 and has subsequently re-estimated remnant resources around Lord Nelson and Lord Henry, and publicly reported updated Mineral Resources in accordance with the JORC Code 2012.All of the information was manually compiled from data released to the DMP and annual reports. "These studies address the relationship between mill media sizing and its grinding efficiency. Starting with the results from a review of the literature, the issues of initial media sizing for a new ball milling circuit, and then optimal media sizing for an existing milling operation, were studied. The Functional Performance parameters “Mill Grinding Efficiency” and cumulative “Mill Grinding Rates” from both plant and test-scale equipment were used, and provide valuable new insight into this topic. A plant media sizing diagnostic tool is presented, as are newly developed testing equipment and evaluation methods, and recent case studies.REVIEW OF MEDIA SIZING LITERATURE For a plant metallurgist to answer the question “How can I maximize plant profit by manipulating this grinding circuit variable?” she must know what effect the variable has on grinding circuit efficiency. Despite the significant cost of grinding media and its potential effect on production capacity, the ‘best’ media sizing remains ill-defined for any given ball mill circuit in the industry today. The underlying reasons for this will be discussed. But the importance of this issue drove Metcom and its industrial partners to take on the challenge of how to engineer the ball charge for an existing grinding circuit. In the absence of any proven method, the first step was a review of the literature. Sponsored by Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc., a broad review of the literature was undertaken, producing “The Effect of Media Sizing on Ball Milling Efficiency” (McIvor, 1997). Among hundreds of publications that were reviewed that discuss the topics of media sizing or wear, forty-five were studied in detail. These were grouped into: plant experiences; laboratory and pilot plant investigations; media wear studies; population balance modeling studies; and general papers on ball milling which included the topic of media sizing. The reader is encouraged to refer to that review. The findings remain unchanged, although some relevant papers have been written since (e.g. Staples et al, 1997; Banasi et al, 1999; Orford et al, 2006; LaMarsh, 2015). Impala Platinum?s No.16 Shaft mine is currently under construction and is expected to reach full production of 256 500 tons per month by 2014. Mining will start at 1 260 m below surface with a maximum mining depth of 1 535 m where virgin rock temperatures of 56.6°C will be experienced. As a result of depth, high virgin rock temperature and narrow reef mining, an expected total of 31.5 MW[R] of air cooling capacity will be required to achieve acceptable underground conditions. This will be achieved by cooling mine intake air in a single dedicated air cooling installation located on surface. The compact installation includes air cooling spray chamber, refrigeration machines, condenser cooling towers, evaporator and condenser water reticulation as well as all electrical and control systems. Construction and commissioning of the first phase of this air cooling installation has recently been completed on a turn-key contract basis.

"IntroductionTHE LYNN LAKE MINE, situated in Manitoba about 150 miles north of Sherridon, has been actively developed by Sherritt Gordon Mines, Limited, during the past seven years, resulting in the establishment of a proven reserve of over 14,000,000 tons of ore containing 1.223 per cent nickel, 0.618 per cent copper, and additional cobalt values. For many years, the Sherritt Gordon Company operated a copper-zinc-gold mine at Sherridon but, as this mine was approaching exhaustion and as it was proposed to use the mining and milling equipment to treat the Lynn Lake ore, a number of unusual problems were faced in transferring plant and operations from the one mine to the other, and particularly in preparing to undertake nickel production.Preliminary investigation showed that the ore could be concentrated by flotation to produce a copper concentrate containing 28 to 30 per cent copper with less than 1 per .cent nickel, and a nickel concentrate containing 11 to 14 per cent nickel, 0.3 to 0.4 per cent cobalt, and less than 2 per cent .copper, with high recovery of the three metals in .the concentrates. It was apparent that, initially, the copper concentrate could be economically smelted and refined in the usual manner. But as the nickel concentrate contained an insignificant amount of precious metals (less than 0.02 oz. per ton) and as .it had a much higher nickel content than comparable concentrates normally produced from sulphide ores, the selection of a treatment process and the location of a plant required careful study."

The expectation from the blasting engineers and shotfirers is often that explosives will perform optimally at all times. However, in reality, non-ideal situations exist on mine sites and occurrences of poor explosives performance are common. Often the cause is difficult to identify. Having a good application technique and analysis skills will minimise the risk of poor performance. This paper will discuss the experiences gained by the author while blasting in the Hunter Valley, Australia.

The Sunnyside single-entry project pioneered the use of single entries for longwall development in this country. During the 10-year course of the project, an immense amount of information was gathered. Over three miles of entries were observed primarily through instrument groupings placed in strategically located areas or "rooms." Nearly 1,200 instruments were monitored to gain information on the behavior of coal entries during development stages and through the mining of two longwall panels. This was one of the most extensively documented projects undertaken by the Bureau, The data gathered has a great potential for scientific research especially in the area of longwall mining. This Bureau of Mines report presents the ground control data gathered, in the form of computerized plots. Roof-to-floor deformation and load on cribs and roof bolts make up the bulk of the data, which is presented as load or deformation versus time. The plots are organized, generally, by the three main entries involved and, specifically, by the individual areas or rooms in those entries. No major attempt will be made, in this paper, to analyze the data other than to identify its source arid its history.

I will talk today about a porphyry copper exploration program now underway in the Amazon jungle in the southeastern part of Ecuador near the border with Peru. The project is unusual for two reasons: first the deposits are of Jurassic age, 153 m.y.o., which is unusually old for porphyry copper deposits and they may be the most significant pre-Tertiary age porphyry deposits known. Second, the district was found only six years ago which makes this the most recent discovery of a totally new porphyry copper district. The new porphyry district, known as the Zamora River Copper Belt, or the Corriente Copper Belt, is a north trending area 50 km long by 10-15 km wide, which is nearly aligned with the axis of the Jurassic age Zamora batholith and with the course of the Zamora river. Gencor in 1994 initiated a regional grassroots gold exploration program based on reconnaissance geologic mapping and geochem sampling which did not find a gold mine, but which identified the San Carlos porphyry copper system in April, 1995. In a later reorganization between Gencore and Billiton the Ecuador project was transferred to Billiton and between the Gencore work and Billiton’s a total of 10 porphyry copper systems were found over the next four years. In the period of 1997 - 1999 Billiton drilled a total of 11,000 meters of wide spaced core holes in the San Carlos, Panantza and Kutukus prospects. In October 1999 Billiton concluded a farm-out, joint venture agreement with Corriente Resources and Lowell Mineral Exploration for additional exploration of the Zamora property. This is funded by Corriente and managed by Lowell Mineral Exploration and a total of 28,000 m of core drilling was completed through August 2001. An immediate result of the Corriente Lowell project was the discovery of potentially commercial ore reserves in two new deposits at Mirador and Warintza. Additional closer spaced drilling was done in the Panantza deposit and additional drilling is planned at San Carlos, in targets related to Warintza, and elsewhere.

In 1980, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral survey of the 23,500 acre Garcia Mountain RARE II area (No. 5107) in the Los Padres National Forest. Bureau of Mines data indicate a low potential fur gold, silver, and mercury resources. Twenty-nine placer samples, representative of small yardages, showed small amounts of gold or other economic mineral values. Mercury deposits in faulted siliceous rocks in the Franciscan Formation occur north of the area. Similar rocks are in the southwest part of the study area, but apparently contain no mercury deposits. Geothermal and oil and gas potential is low.

A number of mineral deposits occur in close proximity to the Pacific plate fronts. Among these deposits are gold-silver and the base metal sulphide deposits of copper, zinc and lead. Gold deposits that commonly occur in these areas are of hydrothermal origin. Of these the epithermal deposits have attracted the attention of the exploration geologists as well as the metallurgists. One vital aspect of the activity of the geologists is the development of models for epithermal gold mineralisation in the Pacific Rim. These models can also be used by metallurgists for predicting gold extraction processes. This paper reviews the mineralogy, fineness and the host minerals of gold and examines the data in the light of gold mineralisation in the southwest Pacific Rim. The gold mineralisation models proposed for the Pacific Rim have been used to predict gold extraction processes suitable for the various mineralisation types. Discussed also are the mineralisation and treatment processes of some selected epithermal gold deposits and gold-rich porphyry copper deposits in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji and New Zealand.

One of the most important requirements to be met by any coal producer is delivery of size consists tailored to specific applications. Generally these specifications include a minimum as well as a maximum size limit. The customers of a major Indiana coal producer noticed that some shipments of sized coal contained a large proportion of undersize pieces. Also, in these shipments, the pieces which remained within the specified limits were cracked and, when handled, crumbled readily. The producer, certain that these shipments had been properly sized at the tipple, suspected that degradation had occurred in transit. The Indiana Geological Survey was requested to examine the coal from one of these shipments to attempt to determine the cause of breakage. Two basic facts about coal and coal seams led to the employment of petrographic techniques in this investigation. First, all coal seams consist of accumulations of diverse organic and inorganic constituents; and second, most coal breakage, either desirable or undesirable, can be attributed to the inherent weakness of some of these constituents or to poor adhesion between certain constituents. Analyses of degraded coal Sampling: Samples were secured from 2 stock piles of 2-by 4-inch coal in a dealer's yard. The coal in both piles had received the same treatment from mining to storage, although it had been mined and shipped on two different days. The size consist of one pile, however, appeared smaller than that of the other. The sample from the degraded pile is referred to as the slack sample, and the other is called the unslack sample. Size analyses: In order to determine the actual size consist, the samples were screened, with a minimum of rough handling, on square 2-inch, 1-inch, 1/2-inch, and 12-mesh screens. It is assumed that 100 percent of the 2-by 4-inch coal is retained on a 2-inch round screen at the tipple. Analyses of several loads at the tipple indicate that approximately 26 percent of the 2- by 4-inch coal, 100 percent of which was assumed held on a 2-inch round screen, passed through a 2-inch square screen. Twenty-six percent may be taken as the normal difference between round and square screens. Results of the analyses of stockpile coal are shown in Table 1. Cumulative percent versus size are plotted on a Rosin-Rammler chart as Figure 1. Both samples approximately follow normal size distribution; this indicates that breakage is not size preferential and also that the samples are representative of the stockpiles. Although both samples exhibit the same general size distribution, the median size of the slack sample is considerably smaller than that of the unslack sample. Fifty-five percent of the unslack sample was undersize (29 percent greater than the normal 26 percent difference), and 83 percent of the slack sample was undersize (57 percent greater than the normal 26 percent difference). Both piles contained a greater percentage than normal of undersize coal; this indicates that they were both affected by degradation, but to a different degree. Gold Fields Australia (Gold Fields) has identified that improving productivity through more detailed shift planning and operational control of mining activities is a key driver to the success of their business. The Hamlet mine was chosen as a pilot site to trial a system that would allow production engineers and shift bosses to align the execution of short-term activities with the longer-term goals of the organisation.Gold Fields partnered with Deswik to introduce an on-site, collaborative, web-based system to allow mine planners to quickly build-up a detailed, activity-based, shift schedule for the coming week from the 13-week plan. Multiple stakeholders could then review and alter the plan, and then track and manage the execution of the activities.The system is designed to be integrated with production data capture systems to allow tracking of progress towards completion for each activity, as well as to plan and monitor the equipment operating in the mine. Integration of systems allowed engineers to use the large quantities of production data being captured to make informed decisions in the operations environment.The system replaced a complex set of spreadsheets that required expert users in Gold Fields to maintain. By capturing the data in a central database, the planning process is transparent and historic data from the execution of activities is available for analysis to improve productivity in the future.The system has ensured that the highest priority and critical path activities for the business are completed at the right time, improving the efficiency of operations.CITATION:Deucker, E and White, A, 2017. "This paper sets out a simplified approach by which the practical foundation designer can undertake the relevant calculations to satisfy the requirements for deep foundation design in seismic areas. The following matters are dealt with:a. Design issues that should be addressed;b. Pile design for axial loading, including the possible effects of liquefaction;c. Pile design for lateral loading where liquefaction does not occur;d. Pile design for lateral loading where liquefaction does occur;e. Measures to mitigate against liquefaction effects.The paper is a modified version of a paper presented in 2013 to the 19th NZGS GeotechnicalSymposium, Queenstown, New Zealand.1. INTRODUCTIONConsideration of the effects of earthquakes and seismic loadings is an increasingly important aspect of modern foundation design, and most contemporary standards have a mandatory requirement for such consideration. For example, the Australian Piling Code, AS 2159-2009, states that “a pile shall be designed for adequate strength, stiffness and ductility under load combinations including earthquake design actions”. However, the methods by which such considerations can be undertaken are generally not set out in the standards, and many approaches have been utilized, ranging from very simplistic methods to extremely complex computer analyses. Accordingly, there appears to be scope for an approach that is soundly based but which is neither too simplistic nor too complex.Poulos (1989) has suggested that there are three categories of analysis and design, as follows:1. Category 1: empirical methods.2. Category 2: simplified but soundly-based methods.3. Category 3: more comprehensive methods that are soundly-based, and site-specific.The objective of this paper is to set out a systematic but simplified approach which falls into Category 2 above, and by which the foundation designer can undertake the relevant analyses to satisfy the foundation design requirements for seismic regions. Emphasis is placed on methods that do not require “black box” software or which employ complex soil models in which the physical meaning of the parameters is unclear."

This document presents a description of the results of a project aimed at producing a broad description of current mining training programs and an evaluation of their effectiveness with respect to reducing mine injuries. Aggregate training and injury data were used to evaluate the overall training effort at 300 mines as well as specific efforts in twelve categories of training course objectives. From such evaluations, recommendations were derived with particular emphasis being placed on identifying program characteristics that tend to be associated with effective training. Recommendations were also formulated with reference to role changes in industry and government interaction with respect to training programs, new or additional training programs, changes in the types of course materials and training methodologies, and recommendations concerning new areas for investigation.

This report analyzes the byproducts systems of lead, zinc, uranium, rare earths, iron, aluminum, titanium, and lithium. Specific byproduct metals covered are cadmium, germanium, indium, and thallium from the zinc system; antimony and bismuth from the lead system; vanadium, radium, and scandium from the uranium system; rare-earth oxides from the rare-earth system; and cobalt, gallium hafnium, and rubidium from other systems. The report discusses various metallurgical systems, marginal and incremental production costs of byproduct subsystems, industry structure and organization, and historical data on price, consumption, and supply.

In general, x-ray computed tomographic (CT) techniques are able to provide 3D images of the internal structure of opaque materials in a nondestructive manner. The unique cone beam geometry allows acquisition of all 2D projections with only one rotation of the sample thus providing for fast data acquisition and better x-ray utilization, as a complete 2-D detector array receives the cone-shaped flux of rays. Thus, an isotropic 3D volume can be reconstructed without the mechanical translation and the stacking of sequential slices as is the case for more conventional CT scanners. In this regard, a state-of-the-art, custom designed xray microtomography facility to provide very detailed 3D spatial analysis of multiphase particles has been installed and is in operation at the University of Utah. The reconstructed 3D tomographic volume allows for an adjustable spatial resolution from 5 to 20 microns for sample dimensions from 10 to 40 mm in diameter, respectively. Utilization of this custom designed cone-beam x-ray microtomography system is discussed. Applications described include: coal washability analysis for the design and operation of coal preparation plants, liberation analysis for evaluation of grinding practice and separation efficiency, mineral exposure analysis for prediction of the ultimate recovery from heap leaching operations, and analysis of the pore structure network of packed particle beds for simulation of flow through such porous structures as encountered in filtration and heap leaching.

This Bureau of Mines publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 495 natural gas samples from 21 States and three foreign countries. Of this total, 376 samples were collected during calendar year 1968. The remaining 119 analyses are of samples collected during previous years, but releases granting permission to publish the results Here not received until 1968. All samples were collected as a part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917 and in late 1965 was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Ten previous publications have presented results of 8,165 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Hines Helium Activity prior to 1968. The spatial and temporal evolution from the porphyry to high-sulphidation epithermal environment can be assessed by integrating new results on such deposits (Arribas et al, 1995; Hedenquist et al, 1998) with past studies of plutonic and porphyry systems (Dilles and Proffett, 1995; Cline, 1995; Shinohara and Hedenquist, 1997; Hedenquist and Richards, 1998). Some time ago, Sillitoe (1973) argued for the nature of the tops and bottoms of porphyry deposits. He concluded that epithermal deposits may form over the tops of some porphyry systems. We can now conclude more confidently what the tops and bottoms of many high-sulphidation ore deposits appeared like while active (Arribas, 1995; Hedenquist, 1995). In addition, we better understand the nature of the zonation of high-sulphidation epithermal systems from the intrusive to surficial environment (Sillitoe, 1999), and how these two styles of ore deposit are related. Geological and geochemical evidence clearly indicates a continuum between these two ore environments. This improved understanding of genesis allows more efficient exploration for these deposits. There are many examples of spatially associated porphyry and epithermal ore deposits. A genetic connection has been suggested by some, and argued against by others. Nowhere is this spatial association better seen than in northern Luzon, Philippines, where the Lepanto high-sulphidation epithermal Cu-Au deposit overlies the Far Southeast (FSE) porphyry Cu-Au resource (Figure 1). Together these mineralised bodies contain a resource of >3.8 M tonnes Cu and >550 tonnes Au. Lepanto was largely mined out in early-1997. Post-war production until 1995 was 0.73 Mt Cu, 115 t Au and 393 t Ag at an average grade of 2.2 per cent Cu, 3.5 g/t Au and 11 g/t Ag. The recent discovery of the adjacent Victoria low-sulphidation quartz-Au-base metal vein deposit, with a resource of >68 tonnes Au (Cuison et al, 1998), illustrates the variety and abundance of mineralisation in the Mankayan district. This district also hosts the Guinaoang porphyry Cu-Au deposit (Sillitoe and Angeles, 1985) and other epithermal vein occurrences (Figure 1). This brief summary reviews the results recently published on the Lepanto-FSE deposits (Arribas et al, 1995; Mancano and Campbell, 1995; Claveria, 1998; Hedenquist et al, 1998), and stresses the evidence for coupling of mineralisation between the porphyry and high-sulphidation epithermal environments.

Many organizations, including the Bureau of Mines, have made intensive studies of the application of leaching methods to relatively small low-grade disseminated deposits of copper ores, containing both oxide and sulphide minerals. One of the principal difficulties has been to obtain a solvent that could be made at a low cost and would effectively dissolve the copper minerals. Another drawback has been the high initial cost of a plant and the refined type of mechanism ordinarily required by standard practice for carrying out the leaching cycle. The Bureau of Mines has attempted to develop a cheap and efficient solvent that would especially meet the requirements of smaller plants. (See Bibliography.) It has been known that dilute ferric sulphate-sulphuric acid solution is an excellent solvent for most copper minerals, such as chalcocite, bornite, and oxidized forms, but not for chalcopyrite and certain silicates. A method of producing this solution from sulphurous products and waste liquors was developed by the bureau and tried successfully on a test-plant scale at the Southwest Experiment Station in cooperation with the department of mining and metallurgy, University of Arizona, Tucson, Ariz. However, this work did not involve the actual leaching of ores with the solutions thus produced or the cyclic use of the iron solutions in the regenerator cell. Except for certain laboratory tests, in which known impurities were added, no data were available to show the effect on regeneration if accumulations of impurities were built up in the leaching circuit.

In considering the cost of rock excavation, but little attention has been given to the economical handling and breaking up of boulders. Very few records seem to have been kept as to the cost of such work, and although it is difficult for this reason, to set a fair price for breaking up and handling boulders of various sizes, yet the cost of this detail work enters very materially into the cost of solid rock excavation. The subject is worthy of close and prolonged study.
