This paper describing the mining practices at the Old Dominion mine, Globe, Ariz., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various minim districts in the United States. The Old Dominion mine is situated in the eastern port of the Globe-Miami district, about 1-1/2 miles north from the center of the town of Globe. An average of nearly: 1,200 tons per day was mined during 1928. The prevent production is about 1,500 tons per day; of this amount,, approximately 100 tons is direct-smelting ore that is shipped to the smelter at Miami and 1,400 tons milling ore which is treated in the company?s concentrator at Globe. About 600 men are employed at the mine.

Normal dodecyl mercaptan was evaluated as a collector for flotation of sulfide minerals and precious metals. The reagent is from the class of normal mercaptoalkanes (n-alkyl thiols), and is commercially available in the form of a mixture of n-dodecyl mercaptan and a dispersant, under the trade name Pennfloat(TM)3. Reported are results of bench-scale flotation experiments on many commercially treated base metal and precious metal sulfide ores. Dosages, points of addition, and flotation pH were among the uariables studied. Most notable results were increased copper, molybdenum, and precious metals recoveries. Dosages of dodecyl mercaptan on some ores were considerably lower than required for conventional collectors.

"Ground support is a critical element in maintaining the stability of mining drives in deep and high stress mines. In challenging ground conditions, it is necessary to continuously explore ground support strategies that can control the resulting large deformations. It is an objective of mining operations to optimize the ground support by selecting appropriate systems at the time of installation of each reinforcement element. A successful ground support strategy will result in the use of a system that ensures both the structural and operational integrity of the excavations and mitigates the need for rehabilitation.Preliminary ground support design is often based on empirical observations and methods. Once a design is implemented, field trials, observations and in situ pull tests are used to fine tune or improve the design. Although not often employed during this process, numerical modelling can provide helpful insights into the impact of different ground support strategies. In this respect, it is possible to explore the use of multiple options before selecting the most promising ground support system for implementation in field trials. The challenges associated with the numerical modelling of rock support for mines have been described by Lorig and Varona (2013) and Potvin (2017). The employed numerical models should capture all potential failure modes of reinforcement throughout the mining sequence of the excavation. In particular, it is important to emulate the observed in situ ground support performance, as well as the influence of the installation sequence of the support. However, the time and expertise required for this type of modelling of ground support is often not available at mine sites. Even when the expertise is available, it requires a major time commitment and commitment of resources to set up, run and calibrate the sophisticated models capable of explicitly capturing the behavior of ground support.Rock reinforcement is an integral part of all ground support systems used in underground mines. Long, flexible tendons can reinforce the rock mass deeper into the walls and create a thicker reinforced shell around the underground excavation. This article focuses on the optimization of the cable-bolting strategy in squeezing conditions at the LaRonde Mine in Quebec, Canada by integrating the 3D distinct element method (DEM) in the design process. A calibrated numerical model is used to investigate a series of cable bolt configurations and provide recommendations for the ground support design."

This paper presents design and construction challenges associated with a high-capacity rock-socketed drilled pile foundation system for a 60-story building recently constructed in an urban environment. The site is in very close proximity to surrounding 1-to-6-story buildings and a commuter rail subway tunnel structure. High compression, uplift, and lateral loads imposed by the tall, slender tower constructed over a relatively small site footprint posed a significant design challenge due to the close proximity of the subway tunnel and other structures. Construction challenges included those associated with advancing the drilled pile casings through overburden materials using internal flush method mandated by the Transit Agency, advancing the casings through very dense glacial till materials encountered above top of rock, and drilling rock sockets in variable rock conditions. This paper provides a brief overview of the site and subsurface conditions, and discusses the resulting design and construction challenges for the drilled pile foundation system and how they were addressed. SITE AND SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS The 8,350-square-foot site is located in a busy neighborhood in downtown New York City (NYC). Buildings neighboring the site are supported on shallow foundations, and their basements extend about 15 feet below the sidewalk level. A NYC-Landmarked building is located within a NYC Department of Buildings (DOB)-designated 90-foot influence limit from the Project site. NYC Transit Authority (NYCTA) subway tunnel and station structures are located in close proximity to the Project site. The subway tunnel structure extends about 50 to 55 feet below the sidewalk level. Although the upper portion of the tunnel structure is about 13.5 feet away from the site property line, the lower portion is only about 1 foot away from the property line. A site location plan is presented as Fig. 1. Geotechnical borings revealed subsurface conditions generally consisting of successive strata of surficial fill, sandy and silty soils, and glacial till (predominantly consisting of cobbles and boulders) overlying mica schist bedrock. A generalized subsurface profile is presented in Fig. 2. The surficial fill stratum was about 10 to 23 feet thick, and generally consisted of loose to medium dense sandy soils with varying proportions of silt, gravel, and miscellaneous debris such as brick. The underlying sandy and silty soil stratum was about 60 to 79 feet thick and generally consisted of loose to medium dense inter-bedded layers of fine to coarse sand, silty fine sand, and silt. The underlying glacial till stratum was about 26 to 70 feet thick and generally consisted of cobbles and boulders embedded in a very dense soil matrix. Top of bedrock was encountered in the borings about 110 to 150 feet below sidewalk level. Groundwater level was measured at about 30 feet below sidewalk level.

"Hard rock mines move large volumes of material, which can cause the conveyors that are essential to this movement to suffer lots of problems, including carryback, spillage, dust and belt wander. Many of these issues are created at the transfer points where the belts are loaded.This article provides an overview of the latest transfer point systems that incorporate safety and serviceability by design as well as a report on recent projects. One project is the Conveyor B Transfer at the Coeur Rochester silver mine near Lovelock, NV. Here, performance was improved with the installation of belt support cradles, engineered chute walls with external wear liner, and a compact dust collector. A second project is the improvement of belt support idlers and skirtboard sealing in a long loading zone of a conveyor under the concentrator at an Arizona copper mine.The importance of transfer pointsConveyors are essential in mine material handling. Their performance will often make the difference in mine productivity and profitability. A key to conveyor performance is the transfer points where the conveyor belt is loaded and discharges. At these transfer points, many of the problems encountered with the conveyor system are created.The problems that arise at the transfer stations include off-center and segregated loading, mistracking, blockages and plugging. And there are a variety of problems originating with fugitive material — cargo released in the form of carryback, spillage or airborne dust — that are created or exacerbated in the transfer points. These fugitive materials turn into other conveyor-related problems, including shortened component life, unplanned outages for conveyor maintenance, unexpectedly high labor costs for maintenance and cleanup, worker health and safety problems and issues with community relations. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration estimates that 85 percent of conveyor maintenance is a result of fugitive material at conveyor transfer points.Technologies to improve transfer pointsA number of techniques to improve the performance of conveyor transfer points have been developed. Not only do epithermal gold deposits provide many challenges in estimating mineral resources, the complexities of these deposits also provide technical challenges in assessing appropriate mining and processing strategies, as well as social and environmental planning and management. The characteristics of epithermal gold deposits include being highly variable with respect to geometry and gold grade distribution, the presence of other economic contributors, mineralogy, texture, rock strength, weathering and alteration overprint. These characteristics influence the economic value of mining projects in an interlinked manner. Consequently, successful exploitation of epithermal deposits requires a holistic approach, coupled with the effective integration of geological data to meet all aspects of mine development decision-making. This paper presents examples of the key technical challenges encountered in estimating and mining epithermal deposits. The Hallandsås project with a long history, first started in 1991, is well known in the tunneling community. In the past it has been stopped twice for technical and environmental reasons. The third attempt started in 2004 using a dual mode rock TBM. The heterogeneous highly fractured and abrasive rock mass as well as large areas of water bearing zones present most difficult subsurface conditions. The tunneling concept is based on the use of watertight segmental lining and a TBM able to operate in open mode, possibilities for extensive pre excavation grouting and high pressure closed mode operation up to 13 bar to cover exceptional conditions.

The concentrated coal-water slurry has been receiving considerable attention recently due its ability to replace fossil fuels. Attainment of stable and concentrated slurry has been succeeded so far through several physical and chemical techniques. The present article reports the formulation and stabilization of a highly concentrated coal-water slurry formed from five varieties of non-coking coals with variable ash contents obtained from Eastern part of India, employing three varieties of starch esters, such as starch benzoate, starch formate, and starch carbamate as dispersant. The apparent viscosity of the modified coal-water slurry has been measured by varying coal loading, dispersant percentage, pH, temperature, etc. The apparent viscosity of the slurry has been found to be decreased substantially on addition of 0.8% of adsorbate in the slurry. The particle-particle interaction has been considerably decreased and stable concentrated coal-water slurry containing high weight fraction of coal (61.5-63.5%) has been achieved in each case. The slurries stay in a non-settling form for about a month with viscosity in a permissible low range. The coal-water slurry has been found to behave as a non-Newtonian liquid. Comparison of the zeta potentials of the naked and modified coals evidences that adsorption of the dispersants at coal-water interface results in inhibition of the agglomeration of coal particles through mostly steric repulsions.

"The Obuasi Mine of AngloGold Ashanti Limited has been operating the world’s largest Biooxidation Plant at its Sulfide Treatment Plant (STP) in Ghana, using the Gencor Biox® technology since February 1994. The Biox® technology was preferred to other alternative methods of treating refractory sulfide ores such as roasting, pressure oxidation and nitric acid leaching due to among other reasons, its lower capital and operating costs, reduced technical risk, relatively benign environmental impact and its ease of operation and maintenance in a remote location.STP has since commissioning succeeded in operating this technology successfully but not without some operational problems. The Plant has seen a number of upgrades and modifications in its circuits which were motivated by cost, operational and throughput constraints.The objective of this paper is therefore to highlight the mine’s experience in the treatment of its complex carbonaceous refractory sulfide gold ores with emphasis on plant operations and improvements such as the Biox® reactors expansion, flotation concentrate upgrade project and neutralization circuit modifications. The Biox® Plant operating cost is also discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Obuasi mine forms part of the AngloGold Ashanti Group of Gold Mines. It is located in the Adansi West District of the Republic of Ghana. The mine is primarily an underground operation, although some surface mining still takes place. Ore is processed by two main treatment plants: the Sulfide Treatment Plant (for underground ore) and the Tailings plant (for tailings reclamation operations). A third plant, the Oxide Plant, is used to batch-treat remnant opencast ore and stockpiles, of which there are adequate tonnages to keep the plant operational until 2008.Though reference is made in this paper to the Tailings and Oxide Treatment Plants, the main focus will be on the Sulfide Treatment Plant."

A 1981 U.S. Bureau of Mines investigation indicates the Panamint Dunes Wilderness Study Area (WSA) has one active (intermittent) mine,--borrow pit MS 242 owned by the California Department of Transportation (Cal Trans). This mine produces cinders for road base and traction grit. It contains about 900,000 tons of inferred reserves. Examination and sample analyses indicate the Panamint Dunes deposit, covering about 480 acres of the WSA, may have silica resources and the Green Quartz Claim may have copper resources. Carbonate rocks occur in the WSA, but stone resources have not been identified. Adjacent to the WSA, the Big Four Mine contains 35,000 tons of inferred subeconomic zinc-lead-silver resources, and may have additional resources. Sample analyses indicate the Apple 1 Claim, also adjacent to the WSA, may have silver-lead-zinc resources.

Ventilation modelling is used to evaluate ventilation system performance. This paper describes modelling to assess potential changes to a single entry longwall ventilation circuit to improve ventilation and gas management. The longwall panel is extracting a 215 metre face in a 1.5 metre coal seam at a depth of 900 to 1000 metres below surface. The 1.5 metre B seam is located approximately 25 metres below the main 3.0 metre A seam and the gas content of both coal seams is approximately 20 to 25 m3/t. The B seam is extracted prior to the A seam and the mine relies on fracturing of the overlying strata to induce gas emission from the A seam to reduce the gas content prior to mining. Longwall operations in the B seam are constrained by limited ventilation and high gas emissions. Due in part to statutory limits on gas concentration and air velocity, the average longwall production rate is approximately 700 t per day.Gate roads in the B seam are single entry, developed using road headers and supported with steel arches. Additional timber cog support is installed to reduce roadway closure from abutment loading. Due to the slow advance of gate road development, mine management were reluctant to consider significant mine design changes, such as two heading gate roads; therefore, the investigation focused on determining the extent to which ventilation and gas emission impacted on longwall production performance, while recommending short-term, low-cost actions to improve ventilation and gas management to support increased longwall production.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017. In underground coal mining, particularly room-and-pillar methods, the coal pillars play a significant role in roof stability. If the pillar dimensions are increased, the pillar bearing capacity also increases, but more coal remains in the pillar and therefore the recovery of mining operation decreases. Therefore, determining the optimum pillar dimension based on technical, economical and performance parameters is important. In this paper, the coal pillar is designed by using the concept of ground reaction curve (GRC). For this purpose, the GRC for coal pillars is drawn and then the elastic and plastic zone of coal pillar behavior is determined. Based on elastic and plastic zone, different equations are presented to draw a pillar reaction curve and the process of coal pillar design based on GRC is explained. As a case study, this new technique is applied to study the coal pillar state in Tabas coal mine of Iran. The results show that the presented new approach is successfully used in the design of the optimum coal pillar dimensions, and also determines the elastic and plastic behavior limit, which is important especially for the logical design of yield pillars.

"The piassava fiber is one of the most rigid natural lignocellulosic fibers, which has since the last decade been investigated as possible reinforcement for polymeric composites. In the present work, the tensile properties of polyester composites reinforced with piassava fibers with thinner diameters were investigated. Composites with volume fractions up to 30% of continuous and aligned piassava fibers were tensile tested at room temperature to evaluate the ultimate strength, elastic modulus and total strain. For each volume fraction, individually separated fibers with the smaller diameters were tested. The results indicated that the tensile properties tend to improve with increasing volume fraction of the thinner piassava fibers. The role played by the fiber/matrix interaction was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy.IntroductionA significant change in the transportation sectors mainly the aerospace and automotive, occurred last century with the introduction of stronger and lighter materials. The most relevant example was the polymer composite reinforced with synthetic fiber. They are nowadays replacing conventional materials such as the aluminum alloys in airplane body owing to superior specific strength. in recent years, however, environmental problems in a global scale are imposing a reversion in the use of synthetic fiber specially the glass fiber. In spite of its higher specific strength, this fiber and its polymer composites can neither be recycled nor incinerated in a thermal plant to generate electricity [1]. Moreover, the fabrication, processing and transportation of a glass fiber composite are associated with C02emission, the major responsible for global warming [2].A possible substitute for glass fiber without the above-mentioned environmental problems, could be a natural fiber. In fact, natural fibers obtained from cellulose-rich plants, also called lignocellulosic fiber, are already being used in several engineering fields, particularly the automobile industry [3-6]. Figure 1 illustrates an automobile and its many components made of lignocellulosic fiber composite [7]."

Coprecipitation of anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes has been applied to floccula-tion of several mineral systems. Results obtained in a study of the flocculation of kaolinite and hematite suspensions of polycationic and polyanionic electrolytes are presented. Greatly increased settling rates were observed following precipitation of positive and negative polyelectrolytes on the surface of finely divided minerals in aqueous suspension. The ratios of polycationic to polyanionic electrolytes required to produce maximum sedimentation have been shown to correspond closely with the equivalence points obtained by light scattering studies of systems containing the positive and negative polyelectrolytes by themselves. DISPERSION of colloids has been of interest to surface chemists for many years. Flocculation studies have been employed to evaluate the limits of colloid stability. In water suspensions, colloids become unstable and flocculate when the 5 potential, the potential of the kinetic solvation sheath, falls to a value at which van der Waals forces may act to draw the particles together. This may happen through an adjustment of the pH of the suspension or by addition of a salt. Optimum conditions for rapid formation of large flocs are found in the region of minimum < potential. In addition to these well known considerations, colloids in water suspensions are known to be flocculated by certain large organic macromolecules. These polyelectrolytes in some cases minimize the 5 potential and in other instances increase the attractive forces by supplying sites for hydrogen bonding.&apos; Use of organic polyelectrolytes in flocculation of mineral colloids has increased rapidly in recent years. These materials are now recognized as indispensable aids to fluid-solid separations in many extractive metallurgical operations. They have been found to increase both the settling rate in thickeners and the filtration rate of filters. In the elucidation of the characteristics of these organic reagents as floc-culants in this laboratory, it was discovered that interaction of certain polyelectrolytes had a surprisingly good effect on flocculation of mineral colloids. Experimental Procedure: The anionic flocculants used in this study were Lytron 886 and 887, produced by Monsanto Chemical Co. Both reagents are copolymers of vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride. Lime is added to Lytron 886, whereas Lytron 887 is all organic. These reagents possess two carboxyl groups for each acetate group and are therefore anionic in character. The cationic reagents used were the Peter Cooper Co. 1-X and 2-X glues. The structures are not definitely known, but the re- agents are amines and are cationic in character. The glues were prepared in the chrome-alum form. Both types of reagents may be classified as polyelectrolytes in that they are high molecular weight polymers and ionize in water. All data presented are in terms of sedimentation rate, measured in 250-ml glass-stoppered graduated cylinders. With suitable precautions such measurements are fairly reproducible and provide a sensitive means for selecting important parameters such as PH, reagent concentration, and floc size and density. Agitation was standardized with five complete end over end cycles of the suspensions in the stoppered graduated cylinders.

The Anaconda Copper Company reportedly reached an exclusive agreement with Cook Inlet Region, Inc., to explore 24 million acres in south-central Alaska and to share equally with Cook the proceeds of any mineral discovery. According to an Anaconda geologist, "the company is anticipating, based on geologic testing, that it will find significant deposits of copper, lead, and zinc. There is also evidence of the presence of precious metals such as silver and gold, and also strong evidence of strategic minerals such as chrome, platinum, tin, and nickel." Cook Inlet Region, Inc., is owned by 6,500 Alaskan natives. Chile, which has a growing, free-market economy under President Pinochet, reportedly will no longer require companies to obtain prior governmental approval for the exploration and development of new mines.

Xuandong Coal Mine is mining coal in one of the most challenging underground environments in the world. This work has found that it is not only challenging but it also has the composition for some interesting rock mechanics and ground control conditions. The paper highlights the extreme mining and rock mass behavior conditions encountered when mining coal at 900 m below surface. It was found that the ground control environment associated with geological weakness, low coal material strength and stiffness, was reasonably well controlled; however, the chain pillar geometry and design did not take these geological weaknesses into consideration. Some of the chain pillars employed were quite large, which resulted in floor punching and secondary floor heave, which causes extreme difficulty for production. No barrier pillar has been employed except for the center 164-m-wide main headings pillar with a w/h ratio in excess of 40. After assessing the location and geometry of a 200-m-thick dolerite sill overlaying the coal measures, we found the probability of it breaking up into to smaller fragments and producing a larger goaf to be low. Therefore, the influence of the dolerite sill on chain pillar loading is considered small compared to the low coal, immediate floor and roof rockmass strength. It is further recognized that horizontal stresses could be locked up within the dolerite sill, which would likely result in regional bending that would be distributed through the chain pillars. This has, to some extent, already occurred, and the effects have been seen and felt through excessive floor heave, pillar punching, and coal bumps (seismicity). We?ve also found that there was a need to employ basic rock mechanics principals in assessing the stability of future multiple seam mining layouts.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade reports 6,000 mineral occurrences of 80 metals and minerals. Mongolia has already attracted much foreign investment in the mining sector. Mining is the country’s largest industry. It is responsible for 17 percent of the gross domestic product, 65 percent of industrial output and 57 percent of export earnings.

Aços resistentes ao desgaste são amplamente aplicados em partes estruturais que exigem propriedades como resistência mecânica, tenacidade e resistência ao desgaste abrasivo. O presente trabalho foi realizado devido à necessidade de desenvolvimento de materiais necessários para minimizar os efeitos causados pelo desgaste abrasivo. Os objetivos são: obter microestrutura multiconstituída (ferrita, bainita, martensita e austenita retida) por meio de tratamentos térmicos; e compará-la a microestrutura martensítica revenida. O aço estudado possui a seguinte composição química 0,26%C-1,13%Mn-0,92%Si-0,72%Cr- 0,29%Mo-0,18%Ni-0,17%Cu. Conduziu-se os tratamentos térmicos na sequência apresentada: recozimento subcrítico a 700°C, têmpera em óleo (temperatura de austenitização 940°C) e tratamento isotérmico de transformação bainítica (temperatura de austenitização de 820, 860, 900 e 940°C) ou recozimento subcrítico a 700°C seguido de têmpera/revenimento (940°C e resfriamento em água/250°C por 2 horas). Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV) foi empregada para se avaliar a microestrutura do aço. Dureza Rockwell C foi utilizada com intuito de comparar a dureza das diversas microestruturas obtidas. Constatou-se que com a diminuição da temperatura de austenitização houve decréscimo do valor de dureza; e as amostras temperadas e revenidas demonstraram dureza média maior que as amostras que passaram por tratamento isotérmico de bainitização. A microestrutura multiconstituída foi obtida.

Northparkes Mines is developing the E26 Lift 1 North block cave mine, which is adjoined to the existing E26 cave. This paper presents the challenges and methods used to design the ground support system during the feasibility study. Calibrated numerical simulations were conducted to forecast the levels of rock mass damage and to assist the ground support design. Generally, low to moderate rock mass damage is forecast on the extraction and undercut levels. However, poor ground conditions are expected in sheared and preconditioned zones adjacent the existing E26 cave. This will result in difficult ground conditions during development, undercutting and drawbell establishment. Empirical assessments were conducted to make sure the ground support system is able to handle both the static and dynamic load demand, and to accommodate the deformation values. A safety factor of 1.5 was used for the designs to cover the unknown rock mass conditions and potential for larger seismic events. Learnings from the E26 Lift 1 and SLC, also mining against the E26 cave, are incorporated into the design. Fibrecrete, mesh and resin bolts / mechanical anchors are the primary ground support system used, and cable bolts for intersections with a span of more than 6 m. Following undercutting and during the operating life of the mine, secondary ground support and rehabilitation will be required.

The Halmahera Contract of Work is a sixth generation contract held 82.5 per cent by Newcrest Mining Limited and 17.5 per cent by PT Aneka Tambang and takes in the Gosowong Project area. In 1991 Newcrest Mining Limited established a small exploration office in Jakarta and proceeded to seek exploration opportunities. The Halmahera area was identified as a substantial prospective ground position in a relatively unexplored area. In late-1991 Newcrest Mining Limited and PT Aneka Tambang agreed to explore in Halmahera. Initial field work commenced in July 1992. A vigorous ground reconnaissance programme led to the discovery of the Gosowong deposit a little over 12 months later in September 1993. In April 1997 the Contract of Work was approved covering much of the island of Halmahera. Between September 1997 and November 1998 activities were directed principally towards obtaining the necessary permits required to commence construction activities. Some particularly ambitious targets were set for achieving this outcome. An aggressive construction programme commenced in late-1998. Construction took place during a period of unseasonally high rainfall, which in itself presented additional challenges to the construction team. A key milestone for the project was achieved on 1 July 1999 when wet commissioning of the process plant commenced. Construction of the Gosowong Mine was achieved on time and within budget. A period of some six years elapsed from the initial discovery of the Gosowong deposit to the time of the first gold pour. Much of the permitting, construction and commissioning activity took place between September 1997 and July 1999. This coincided with a period of significant social, economic and political upheaval in Indonesia. During the construction period a high level of importance was placed on the structured recruitment and training of local people, as well as fostering appropriate community and local business development programmes in the communities nearby the project. Emphasis was also placed on environmental management with detailed long-term planning and progressive rehabilitation commencing during the construction phase. The permitting and subsequent development of the Gosowong Project has demonstrated that even during the difficult times, with commitment, it is possible for mining and exploration companies to conduct business in Indonesia.
