The abstract discusses the problem of silicosis among roof bolter operators in coal mines due to respirable quartz dust (RCS) exposure. It presents a study comparing a new wet box collection system to the traditional dry box system. The wet box system uses water to saturate collected material, reducing RCS exposure during cleaning. The study found that the wet box system significantly reduced RCS exposures and quartz content in samples compared to the dry box system.

This report describes a 4-inch diameter borehole probe which contains a low light level TV camera, magnetic compass, light illumination source, bottom/water detector sensor and a pointing angle sensor. The camera viewing angle is at a right angle to the probe's body. All data from the sensor is multiplexed into the closed circuit camera video for transmission on a single 50 ohm coaxial cable to a surface control unit. Likewise control of the probe's power, zoom lens, focus, panning and aperture is accomplished via a down-link multiplexed on the same cable.

This is one of a series of papers describing mining and related subjects affecting mining in western mining districts and mineralized areas. The parts of this paper pertaining to current production, mining and milling methods and practices, and general conditions affecting mining were collected principally during a field survey made in May 1935. Some original data obtained on previous visits to the area are also included. The history, geological background, and past production of the mines and district are largely abstracted from previous publications, for which due credit is given later in the test. The principal districts in the Black Mountains are the Oatman or San Francisco and the Union Pass or Katherine. This range contains the principal producing mines of the State, in which gold is the only important metal. Although the total production of gold is relatively small as compared to other districts where the precious metals are obtained as a by-product in copper min¬ing, the area is one of considerable economic importance to the State.

Section 15 covers a loose collection of topics that involve water in some way. The chapters in this section include Dredge and Placer Mining (Chapter 15.1), Solution Mining: Surface Techniques (Chapter 15.2), and Solution Mining: In Situ Techniques (Chapter 15.3). The dredge and placer systems involve water in several forms. The segment on hydraulicking or hydrosluicing discusses the use of monitors to direct high-pressure water jets to move material. As such, this represents an alternative to mechanical breakage, loading, and hauling. This chapter also covers placer mining (except dry placering) where the water provides the medium that promotes the separation of minerals based on their density and other settling characteristics. Thus placer mining is generally limited to concentration of gold, tin ore, diamonds, and other heavy minerals that are already liberated and are contained in a less dense matrix. The third topic, straight forward dredging, as in sand and gravel operations, involves water only in an incidental way. Here water simply covers the minerals of interest. Thus the dredging system need only lift a payload from the submerged location to the surface for further processing or handling

"INTRODUCTION The United States, with its vast resources of relatively low-grade zinc been the world's leading producer of zinc -metal for many years. The expanded zinc production during the period, 1939-44, inclusive, was induced by favorable premium prices and has depleted the known ore reserves in the United States. The 1943-44 rate of zinc production cannot long be maintained in the United States, especially if premium prices are removed. Domestic zinc reserves, have been depleted to such an extent that it is doubtful if our mines will again be able to completely and continually fulfill the needs of this country.The Bureau of Mines, anticipating a postwar consumer demand for 550,000 to 750,000 tons of slab zinc and an additional 100,000 tons for use in paints and chemicals, sent two engineers to Sedanka Island in July 1945 to investi¬gate the deposits near Biorka Harbor.ACKNOWLEDGMENTIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "As the concept of autonomous haulage systems (AHS) moves from proto-types to production-ready applications, the operating performance of the haul road will become ‘mission critical’ to the overall success of autonomy in mining. Deterioration in road performance will require remediation, human intervention and significant, albeit temporary, changes to operating procedures, to accommodate road maintenance. With autonomous trucks comes the opportunity to reduce road formation and operating width, and therefore generating potentially significantly reductions in stripping ratios and improvements to mine economics, but only if the design of the road, and it’s associated deterioration rate, is predictable and manageable, based both on the materials used to construct the road and the maintenance interventions to be carried out on the road. This paper presents the assessment of a digital photogrammetric approach to the characterization of a mine haul road surfacing, or wearing course material. Design and maintenance parameters for these roads are currently determined from physical particle size distribution (PSD) assessments of ‘in-road’ material. However, this approach does not accommodate the need, nor leverage the benefits from, AHS. The digital imaging approach is assessed in this paper, using two standard digital analysis software tools, together with in-service mine haul road wearing course samples and images which are assessed to determine the applicability and reliability of the approach to deliver a real-time assessment of haul road surfacing conditions and thus to identify the road maintenance interventions required to address deterioration. INTRODUCTION Enhancements in mine road design, construction and management for the past 20 or more years has largely been focused on short-term tactical needs. These improvements have not been matched by advances in the fundamental technologies that underpin mine road design and management, and although the quality of mine roads have probably increased, many of fundamental and longer-term issues have yet to be addressed. With AHS’s evolving from prototype to production applications, any decision to implement these systems in a mine requires a thorough evaluation of impacts, not only operational improvements, but the inter-connectivity of this autonomy technology to other organizational processes. In developing an understanding, the full interactions that may affect autonomous truck behaviour due to changes in various sub-systems or external environments, haul road conditions and operating performance is a key consideration. This is as true in autonomous as well as in conventional mine truck-based hauling systems where the mine haul road network is a critical and vital component of the production process."

"Florida, the State that supplied 82 per cent of the phosphate rock sold in the United. States in 19284, has two producing areas - the hard-rock and the land pebble districts. Production of the hard-rock field, decreasing importance in recent years, is now confined to mines near Dunnellon, in Marion and. Citrus Counties. The land-pebble district, with a production of almost 80 per coat of the nation's requirements, is located, in Polk and Hillsborough Counties. In the land-pebble area the phosphate deposits - probably Pliocene in age, derived by marine action from underlying, older, phosphate-bearing formations - consist of beds of phosphate matrix, covered by practically barren sands and clays. The overburden, ranging in thickness up to 45 feet, is removed by hydraulic methods or by drag-line excavators. The matrix, ordinarily less than 25 feet in thickness, is mined by hydraulicking and is pumped to adjacent washing plants for beneficiation. The dried product of the washing plants is the Florida pebble rock that is sold in foreign as well as domestic markets.The beneficiation of phosphate ores in the land-pebble district of Florida has been largely limited in the past to the recovery of the coarser pebbles. By washing and screening the crude matrix a separation is effected at about 20 mesh (0.033 inch). The coarser material is the phosphate-rock product of the plant and the finer material is discarded. The amenability of the washer- rejects to treatment by other processes is being investigated. Of methods that may have some application to the treatment of the low-grade phosphatic sands that comprise the greater portion of the washer-rejects, gravity concentration has received some study.Laboratory experiments to determine the amenability of phosphate sands to gravity methods of concentration were first performed in October, 1927. Later, in the winter of 1928-1929, a further series of teats was made,. In these later tests phosphatic sands were concentrated by hydraulic classification, and. also by hydraulic classification followed by tabling. In these experiments concentrates with an analysis above the minimum grade of commercial phosphate rock (66 per cent bone phosphate of lime - B.P.L.) obtained. The recovery of the phosphate varied but was promising enough to warrant further study. A more comprehensive investigation was therefore outlined. This paper presents the results obtained from an investigation, of classification and tabling of phosphatic sands recently completed by the United States Bureau of Mines Su cooperation with certain Florida phosphate companies, the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, and the University of Alabama."

One of the problems that is occasionally encountered during the continuous casting of DIN 1.4003 stainless steel (hereafter referred to as 1.4003) is the side bulging effect, a problem that is generally prevalent in ferritic stainless steels. This occurs because the unconstrained narrow sides of the solidification shell are not able to withstand the ferrostatic pressure once the strand has emerged from the mould. Coupled with side bulging, there is strand width variation at high temperatures, i.e. when the steel is in the ferrite-austenite dual phase region. Both of these dimensional changes to the slab profile create some processing problems in subsequent hot rolling operations when unacceptable width variations are encountered. The strength of the solidification shell and its ability to withstand the ferrostatic pressure during continuous casting is dependent on its thickness and phase composition when exiting from the mould up to a few metres downstream. From the study of the high temperature metallurgical behaviour of this steel, it was observed that a thicker solidification shell when exiting from the mould and a higher austenite volume fraction in the steel would be favourable for the reduction of the side bulging effect during continuous casting. It was also found that as long as the d-ferrite to austenite phase ratio keeps fluctuating due to variations in chemical composition and process control in the dual phase region from cast to cast, the strand width variation problem would probably persist. The remedy to this effect lies in more strict chemical composition and process control during continuous casting of this steel. The hot ductility experiments revealed that 1.4003 exhibits good hot ductility in the strand straightening temperature range with a minimum of 75 per cent reduction in area and this was attributed to the high volume fraction of ferrite (0.2 to 0.4) in the steel. This would provide a remedy to side bulging by increasing the secondary cooling rate of the strand in order to form a thicker solidification shell without necessarily risking transverse cracking and other surface defects during unbending. Ground control failures are one of the main causes of accidents in the underground stone mining industry. Some of the fundamental tools for rockfall hazard identification are related to rock mass characterization and geotechnical discontinuity mapping. Recent technological advances in these methods are related to remote sensing techniques and point cloud processing software for automated discontinuity mapping. Remote sensing techniques, such as LiDAR and photogrammetry, generate multimillion point clouds with millimetric precision, capturing the structure of the rock mass. The automated point cloud processing tools offer alternative algorithm-based methods to characterize and map these discontinuities. However, their applicability is constrained by multiple factors such as site specific conditions of the rock mass and the parameters used within the mapping algorithms. This paper evaluates the performance of automated discontinuity extraction software compared with manual virtual discontinuity mapping. Sampling windows from laser-scanned sections in an underground limestone mine are defined and mapped using discontinuity set extractor (DSE). Results from the virtual discontinuity software are compared with manually extracted fractures from I-Site based on reviewing orientation, trace length, spacing, number of extracted discontinuities, and processing time. The analysis determined that the automated mapping algorithm was able to identify the same discontinuity sets that had been manually mapped. The automated mapping software mapped an excessive amount of smaller fractures, which caused the comparison of both mapping techniques to be unsuccessful in terms of trace length and spacing.

Previous work.-The general plan of work outlined for the Government fuel-testing plant erected at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, at St. Louis, Mo., in 1904, included investigations relative to the briquetting of coals found in the United States. These investigations embraced the possibility of making satisfactory commercial fuels from lignite or low-grade coals which do not stand shipment well; of benefiting culm or slack coals that are wasted or sold at unremunerative prices; and of improving the furnace efficiency or ability to withstand transportation of good coals. This work was begun in 1904 and was continued in 1905, 1906, and 1907 as an essential part of investigations looking to the determination of methods for reducing waste and increasing efficiency in the utilization of the fuel resources in the United States. The initial briquetting tests at St. Louis, which included examination into the behavior of different coals or mixtures of coals in the briquetting press, experimental study of the merits of various substances used as binders, and consideration of the physical properties and resistance to weather and abrasion of the briquets, have been described.a They demonstrated that satisfactory briquets could be made from most coals, and that by briquetting the commercial value of many low-grade coals and lignites could be raised enough to more than cover the cost of manufacture. Norfolk plant.-The briquetting plant of the Geological Survey was moved from St. Louis, Mo., to Norfolk, Va., in 1907, along with the steam boiler and producer-gas equipment of the fuel-testing plant, as the closing out of the affairs of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and the consequent removal of the buildings from Forest Park made a change of location necessary. Norfolk was selected largely with a view to the testing of coals for naval purposes, and because of facilities in the way of buildings and materials offered by the Jamestown Exposition Company. The work at Norfolk was chiefly devoted to making steaming and briquet tests of coals which reach the Atlantic seaboard at Norfolk and Newport News and are used by the navy and merchant marine. Two briquet machines were installed at the Norfolk plant, one being the English machine used in briquetting tests by the Geological Survey at St. Louis in 1905 and 1906, and the other an American machine. The briquets made at this plant were tested on locomotives of several railroads entering Norfolk and on the United States torpedo boat Buldle in comparison with the run-of-mine coal used in making them. Some of the tests were conducted by the railroads on their own locomotives, but those on the Biddle and on the locomotive of the Seaboard Air Line Railway were carried on by W. T. Ray and Henry Kreisinger, of the United States Geological Survey. Personnel.-Charles T. Malcolmson continued in general charge of the briquetting section after the removal to Norfolk until January 1, 1908. Walter J. Chapman continued in charge of operation of the briquet machines and of the observations reported under the heading "Details of manufacture." Charles L. Wright supervised the installation of the English briquet machine and later in the year continued the physical tests of briquets and the analyses in the chemical laboratory of the section until January 1, 1908, on which date he was placed in general charge of the work of the section. G. E. Ryder and Ralph Galt also continued with the staff, but the former was obliged to resign soon after the plant was in operation on account of ill health; the latter continued with the section as computer until the close of work on December 1, 1908.

The petrographer engaged in examining the products resulting from the beneficiation of ores, and rock minerals is constantly required to develop new means acid methods of assaying microscopically the results of such operations. From time to time investigators have published descriptions of apparatus that have aided in solving problems in processes of physical separation. Thus, in 1919, Coghill and Bonardi 3/ published a paper covering the application of the binocular microscope and camera lucida to the microscopic analysis of pulverized ores. Similar work has been published by Schneiderhohn 4/ Schwartz 5/, and Head and his associates 6/, 7/, 8/. The present paper goes further and considers application of the polarizing comparison-microscope to problems directly concerned with mineral dressing where it is desirable to compare analogous products, and in addition it suggests new uses in various related fields. This work was conducted under the cooperative agreements of the Southern Experiment Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama.

The Bureau of Mines performed drill calibration tests on two industrial percussive drills of 2-5/8- and 3-1/2-inch piston diameters to determine operating characteristics for their use in conjunction with penetration rate data in developing drillability equations and furthering the knowledge of percussive drills. The use of a linear velocity transducer for measuring piston velocities and application of its instrumentation are described. Data presented include relationships between maximum piston velocity and feed air pressure other results confirm the theory or data of previous investigators, and some comparisons are made with the performance prediction formulas of other investigators.

Laboratory leaching experiments were conducted to ascertain the effectiveness of acidic solutions of thiourea, CS(NH2)2, for dissolving gold from finely disseminated gold ores. The ore tested was from the Chipmunk ore body of the Northumberland mining district in Nye County, Nevada, USA. Extractions of up to 90% were attained from the ore. Extraction was shown to be dependent on thiourea concentration, ferric sulfate oxidant concentration, acid concentration, and leaching time. Optimum conditions were an ambient temperature leach near pH 1.0 utilizing 100 to 200 kg/ton thiourea and 50 kg/ton ferric sulfate for 8 to 24 hours.

"The financial valuation of mining assets has a number of fundamental differences to the valuation of many other asset groupings. One such difference is that typically, the greater proportion of both the cost and revenue sides of the cash flow are inherently governed by systemic market forces.As a result, the range of outcomes for the valuation of each mining asset is more unpredictable, with higher levels of risk and uncertainty. In contrast, the management function of many other non-mining businesses or industry groups can control at least a portion of the cash flow by maintaining the margin or controlling the sales price. The management teams of mining businesses and operations typically have limited options, and are thus price-takers for both costs and revenues. As mining is an inherently cyclical industry, large, long-life operations can exist through several price cycles, making valuation both subjective and challenging.The outcomes of both static- and stochastic-based valuations, as well as the internal probabilities of the associated cash flow statements, are significantly impacted when the correlations between the appropriate parameters are quantified, modelled and incorporated into the valuation framework. The appropriate parameters for correlation modelling primarily include those that are governed by systemic market forces. Applying this process results in a different risk profile for the asset by allowing the risks resulting from systemic market movements to be more accurately quantified and then objectively minimised. Lors de la conception des fosses, la fiabilité des bancs miniers est analysée à l’aide d’un ou deux critères. L’objectif de cet article est d’analyser l’efficacité de la conception des bancs miniers de la fosse Tiriganiaq du projet minier Meliadine par rapport à des critères de fiabilité rencontrés dans la littérature et la pratique. L’article présente les similitudes et les différences entre les résultats obtenus pour les différents critères et propose une approche multicritère systématique pour évaluer la fiabilité des bancs miniers à l’aide de cartes de susceptibilité.

Oil shale, a long-considered potential source of motor fuel in the United States, is found over an extensive area in the Green River formation in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming.4/ Oil has been retorted commercially from shale in Scotland for many years,5/ and work done by the Bureau of Mines and other investigators has shown that it is technically feasible to extract oil from American shales.6/ By refining, the shale oil may be converted into marketable products similar to those manufactured from crude petroleum. This report describes a study designed to evaluate a pro-posed modification in the cap lamp battery cord intented to reduce the incidence of snagging and catching of the cord. A three phase evaluation was performed comparing a prototype with the standard, currently available cord. First, a ?pull test? equipment was run. The second evaluation was a body conformity study. The third evaluation involved subjects performing common tasks in a low seam coal mine simulator. The results of these evaluations clearly demonstrated significant safety advantages of incorporating coiled cord into the design of the cap cord. The coil cord presented less of a snagging hazard, allowed the wearer more time to respond to a snag, and transmitted lower levels of force to the helmet when snagged. The research team recommended that cap lamp cords be commercially developed which incorporate coiled cord at the battery and helmet.

"An index to evaluate the amenability for processing of different coals is implemented. The index is based on the well-known Mayer-curve or M-curve. The index is superior to other existing indices and is implemented using Microsoft-Excel™. Several coals are used to demonstrate the implementation of the index proposed.IntroductionIn 1950, Mayer introduced a curve that carries the information embedded in the fir s t three curves or ash curves of the conventional washability tables and curves (Peng et al., 1979; Osborne, 1988). The curve was labeled the Mcurve (abbreviation for Mittlewertkurve in German or the Mayer- curve). The main idea behind the curve is to use the ordinate for the cumulative mass and the abscissa for the ash (attribute) mass. Specific slopes on the resulting curve represent the cumulative float, cumulative sink, and elementary ash (attribute) contents (Mayer, 1950, 1953, 1957; Venkatesan, 1975; Osborne, 1988; Salama, 1989). Beyond the ash values, the curve carries graphical information that can be used in evaluating coal processing characteristics. Consequently, it becomes possible to present several raw coals on a single diagram, thus making it easier to compare their processing characteristics. This is particularly useful in comparing various size ranges of raw coal or the same size range from different seams. Therefore, the M-curve is adopted as a vehicle for developing the “processing (washing) characteristics index” implemented in this paper."

"With the increasing proportion of bituminous coal in blend coal, the safety of blend coal during pulverization and transportation is gradually being paid more and more attention. Therefore, the explosivity of bituminous pulverized coal (PC) with different volatile content from 25 to 38% was studied by measuring the combustion flame length after its injection into a glass pipe with the heat source installed in the center. The results indicated that high volatile content bituminous PC is apt to have higher explosivity. By blending different bituminous PC with 10% anthracite, the explosivity of bituminous PC showed a positive correlation with the proportion –OH radical. However, different bituminous PC seemed to have the same explosivity when the addition of anthracite increased to 20%. With the further increasing proportion of anthracite to 30%, the explosivity of bituminous PC with high –OH proportion became negligible while a weak explosivity of high –CH3 proportion bituminous PC still remained.IntroductionWith the increasing iron ore prices and decreasing steel prices, it has become critical for iron and steel enterprises to control the cost in ironmaking and steelmaking process. Blast furnaces (BF) are the main consumer in ironmaking process, which occupies 70% fuel consumption of total steelmaking process [1]. In this circumstance, any means necessary is taken by BF operators to lower the cost of iron in production. Coke and iron ore are the main expense in this process, who takes up a very high proportion in total cost. Pulverized coal injection (PCI) is the most efficient way to reduce coke ratio, which replace coke with relatively cheaper PC.At present, most of BF is injected with blend coal in the consideration of decent combustion property and quantity of heat. Simultaneously, bituminite and anthracite blending is an effective method to obtain blend coals with required composition and performance, such as volatile and ash content, etc. Nevertheless, a very huge gap was found between the price of bituminous coal and anthracite in some regions of China, in which the price of bituminite can be just 70% of the price of anthracite. Thus, iron enterprises in these regions attempt to possibly amplify the proportion of bituminite in blend coal. Increasing proportion of bituminite results in higher volatile content in blend coal, by which the safety of blend coal during pulverization or transportation was deteriorated.Relatively, coals with higher volatile content usually possess stronger explosivity, which means that volatile and explosivity may related to some extent. However, the relationship between volatile and explosivity is not of certainty for some PC with high volatile content around 40% was found to be inexplosive in comparison to the coals with lower volatile content. With the increasing proportion of bituminous coal in blend coal, investigations on the factors of PC explosivity have become more and more important. Therefore, bituminous coals with different volatile content were selected. The explosivity of blend coal and its relationship between volatile content and functionality was investigated in this research."
