The research objective was to determine the effect of vanadium alloy additions on the oxidation behavior of cobalt-nickel Alloys. Eighteen alloys were reacted with 0 2 at 0.5 arm and 1,351°, 1,389°, and 1,429° K. The alloy compositions consisted of Co-Ni master alloys (0, 22, 50, 70, 91, and 100 wt pct Ni) with V additions of 0, 0.9, and 2.7 wt pct. Large early deviations from, or changes in, the parabolic rate constant were encountered, but the reaction rate in most cases declined approximately in accordance with the parabolic rate law. Relatively, the vanadium degraded the oxidation resistance most at the highest nickel contents. In some cases, melting of the oxide was inferred from microscopic evidence and X-ray diffraction measurements disclosed the presence of low-melting vanadates.

[An economic trading region made up of 22 eastern Washington, northern Idaho, and western Montana counties, with Spokane, Washington as the central place, was defined for this study. modeling system with the, 1985 county database was to create an Input/Output based model of the regional economy. The leading ice, with respect to income, employment, value of exports, and total industry output are shown for each county and the region. The value of total industry output from natural resource based industries is also shown for each county and the region. Interindustry transactions, final demand, and value added components for the region are shown in the Regional Gross Flows Table. The total gross output for the region is valued at $36.7 billion. Total industry output for the region is $18.1 billion. The region provides $5.4 billion in income to a work force of 286,000. Spokane County, Washington accounts for about 50 percent of the regional total industry output, income, and employment. Both Spokane County and then as a whole produce about 80 percent of the total industry output for final demand with remaining 20 percent going to intermediate inputs for further production. Spokane County exports about 43 percent of its total output while 35 of the regional output is exported. Exports account for more 50 percent of the total in 18 of the 22 counties within the region. A test pile program was undertaken at a project site in Ain Sukhna, Egypt for an import/export oil jetty. Two 1219 mm diameter open ended steel pipe piles were evaluated at two separate test locations. Each test pile was dynamically tested during initial drive utilizing a Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA). Restrike testing was also performed to evaluate the time dependent soil setup. One static compression test and one static tension test was performed at each test location. A correlation of the static and dynamic load test results was established to develop a driving criteria for the piling across the two kilometer project. The constructability benefits of shorter piles will be discussed in more detail, given that the pile lengths were shortened by 9 to 10 meters on average. Lastly, the use of a four pile linear layout to perform both compression and tension tests will be covered. INTRODUCTION With the increased number of Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC) & Ultra Large Crude Carriers (ULCC) being used to transport oil products around the world, companies and/or nations are presented with the challenge of transferring these products to and from the carriers in deep water scenarios, typically 15 to 20 meter depths, to accommodate the vessels draft. One option for loading/unloading the oil products from a VLCC or ULCC would be to transfer to/from smaller vessels several miles offshore, whereas the most economical option is to unload directly to a pipeline via a berth/jetty platform near shore. These berth platforms must be designed to withstand multiple loading scenarios while these carriers are moored and transferring their products. The use of Large Diameter Open Ended Pipes (LDOEP) piles are a common foundation choice for this offshore application. One of the drawbacks of LDOEP piles, especially across a large project site, is that there can be extreme variability in the pile driving behavior. This can be caused by either a change in soil conditions or the performance of the soil plug. Due to this variability, it is important to verify throughout the duration of the project that the piling is being installed to the correct criteria as established during the load test program. A well designed driven pile load test program, preferably with the combination of Static Load Testing (SLT) and Pile Driving Analysis (PDA), should develop a driving criteria that can allow the contractor and owner to monitor any change in driving behavior.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Yaojialing zinc-gold polymetallic deposit is a newly discovered, large skarn deposit in the Middle-Lower Yangtze metallogenic belt, East China. It is located in the transitional zone between the Tongling uplift block and the Fanchang faulted basin. It is mainly hosted in the contact zone between early Cretaceous granodiorite porphyry and Carboniferous-Triassic limestone, or occurs in limestone xenoliths within the intrusion. Skarn and stratabound massive sulfide orebodies are the primary ore styles. Sulfide ?34SV-CDT values indicate a magmatic sulfur source, in common with most deposits in the Tongling block. Calcite d13CV-PDB and d18OV-SMOW ratios reveal that marine carbonates were the major source of carbon in late-stage hydrothermal fluids. THE raw material men in all industries, and copper is no exception, are accustomed to think of them- selves as the whole show, and not without justice, for if there were no copper mines the world would have no copper. Nevertheless, many different things costing money and resulting in profits must be done to their product before it is ready for the world's use. In other words, they are making the frequent mistake of Chinking in terms of partial costs. Nobody really uses electrolytic copper. Possibly that is why nobody seems willing to pay anything for it. The manufacturers, being canny, do not buy any more electrolytic than they feel that they can work up and sell profitably, although they like to make the raw material men Chink that they will take all that can be produced. This is a state of affairs that has aroused my sympathy and curiosity, and has induced me to study the financial history of the copper wire and brass industry of the country or such portion of it as publishes any records readily available to the curious minded. This paper treats the spatial aspect of mine sequence optimization, revealing it in the context of determining the optimum number of cutbacks of an openpit mine. Cutback mining is currently a dominant method in the mining of base and precious metals. It is based on a pseudo-economic discretization of the pit space using advanced pit design algorithms. The result of implementing such an approach of pit design is the generation of pit shells, which need to be grouped into an optimum number of cutbacks to maximize project value. In this paper, the development of a mathematical solution of this problem using combinatorial analysis is presented. The solution provides a multivariate investigation of the optimum mine sequence with the implementation of a method for production scheduling optimization that uses Net Present Value (NPV) as a criterion for assessing the economic efficiency of mine sequencing. A case study using the conditions of a hypothetical openpit gold mine is provided to illustrate the applicability of the approach. The results obtained reveal the complex nature of NPV variation as a function of the cutback geometry.

This circular is intended to present in brief form the statutory provisions of Pennsylvania regarding mining operations, in force at the end of the 1931 session of the legislature. lo reference is made to general laws which affect mining only incidentally in common with other subjects, such as the workmens compensation law. The statements have been condensed as far as practicable, and provisions not deemed of general interest, such as matters dealing only with administrative details, have been omitted. This circular obviously is not written with such particularity as to be of great value to the legal profession, but it is hoped that it will be beneficial to the mining industry in giving this information in a relatively compact form. At the end of each paragraph the statute from which it is derived is cited to facilitate reference to the text of the law. It is planned to publish additional circulars from time to time dealing with the mining laws of other States. Any criticisms of the form of publica- tion followed herein, or suggestions aimed at the improvement of future circulars, will be welcomed.

New copper and nickel processes, flash converting and DON, direct high-grade nickel matte smelting, have been developed in order to replace the conventional and not so environmentally friendly PS-converting process. With a laboratory scale laminar-flow furnace the combustion reactions of sulfidic feed particles can be investigated under simulated flash smelting conditions. In the present study, finely ground and screened feed fractions of a copper matte and a nickel matte were flash oxidized in a laminar-flow furnace. The experiments were carried out using 20, 21 vol% and 75 vol% O2 in nitrogen, at temperatures 1100 and 1300 °C and reaction zone length of 7.5-16 cm. The samples were quenched in a water film after a specified reaction time. The matte particle reactions were stopped after short residence time intervals in order to obtain a better understanding of the reaction mechanisms. Chemical analysis was used to determine oxidation degree, and optical and scanning electron microscope combined with energy dispersive analysis was used for characterization of the reacted particles. On the basis of the experimental results the reactivity of the mattes is discussed and possible reaction and dust formation mechanisms are considered.

Component failures in the electrical control circuits of mining machines account for a large percentage of the total downtime of the machine. Once a failure has occurred it is always a tedious and usually a time-consuming task to locate the failed component. Moreover, the pressure to quickly locate the cause of a delay can lead to compromises in safety. Thus an onboard diagnostic system, essential for an automated machine, would be a very useful addition to existing machines. This report details U.S. Bureau of Mines development of a generic procedure for synthesizing diagnostic systems for electrical-control-circuit failures in mining machinery. A continuous mining machine is used as the testbed to illustrate the application of the developed methodology. Substantive differences among mining machine control circuits made it impossible to achieve a generic diagnostic system, but a generic approach for the synthesis of the diagnostic system was possible. As the research progressed, it became apparent that an algorithmic approach was better than an expert- system-based implementation. A prototype system was constructed and used to evaluate the diagnostic system. Prototype implementation issues are also examined.

The mine system analysis and evaluation study presented in this report was part of the U. S. Bureau of Nines' Tertiary channel project conducted under the Heavy Metals program. The Badger Hill pit, located on the west end of the San Juan Ridge area, near Nevada City, California, was the site of the Bureau's field work. The objectives of this study were: (1) Determine potential alternative mining systems for some of the large tertiary channel gold-bearing gravel deposits, and (2) Identify areas of technology where further investigation would be merited because of their potential inclusion in a mining system for such deposits, The study involved the development of a mineralized block inventory, an economic block inventory, determination of optimum ultimate mining limits and a preliminary economic mining system evaluation. Computer programs were developed and utilized for each of the study phases stated above. The sampling program conducted at Badger Hill by the Bureau Delineation Group together with confidential drill hole data provided by the San Juan Gold Co. formed the basic gold values and distribution information from which a deposit model was developed. The deposit was divided into minable block units and net economic values were assigned to each block for various configurations of both open-pit and underground mining methods based on cost and performance data provided by the various Bureau of Mines Research Centers. A number of controllable variables such as: (1) Mining method (open-pit and underground), (2) depth of mining cut, (3) production rate and (4) equipment type and capacity were evaluated. The prime measures of effectiveness on which the mining systems where judged were discounted cash flow rate of return and maximum utilization of natural resources. The analysis showed that underground mining of the Six-Mile Tertiary channel gold-bearing gravel deposit under consideration was uneconomical and did not permit maximum recovery of the resources within the channel. It was also apparent that mining the Six-Mile Deposit for gold alone is uneconomical or at best marginal at a gold price less than $80 per ounce. The analysis showed that the potential for an economic mining operation within the Six-Mile Deposit exists when the gravel resources of the channel are considered together with the gold. It was determined that the highest rate of return would be realized with a 20-year open-pit mining operation yielding 745,000 ounces of -gold and 55 million cubic yards of usable gravel.

The work described in this report was undertaken to evaluate and develop techniques for determining the oxygen content of titanium and titanium alloys. Early investigations of volatilization techniques involving halogenation were unsuccessful. Later efforts were concentrated on evaluating vacuum fusion and inert-gas fusion techniques. Two vacuum fusion methods and an inert-gas fusion method were found to be satisfactory in the 0.02 to 1.00 pct., oxygen range. These methods are described in detail. The coefficient of variation by any of the three methods is approximately 5 pct, While the main portion of this paper is devoted to the vacuum and inert-gas fusion methods, a resume of other suggested methods for analyzing titanium for oxygen also is given. INTRODUCTION The Federal Bureau of Nines has conducted research on titanium metal since 1938. This research included development of the Kroll process for the production of titanium (2)4, various sodium reduction processes for making titanium metal and lower valent titanium chloride-sodium chloride mixtures (17), and a fused salt electrolytic process for Me production of high-purity titanium metal and the recovery of titanium by electrorefining from off-grade materials (20).

This section is unique to the Handbook in that it is the only section that deals with underground excavations for nonmining purposes. The editors were of the opinion that the section should be incorporated because the subject matter covered by the chapters is closely related to mining, and many mining engineers are currently involved in these activities. As we enter the decade of the 1990s activities in this category will increase, enhancing the relevance and utility of the material discussed. As the population increases, especially in metropolitan areas, the necessity to go underground will be greater. At the present time, not only are subsurface shopping malls and pedways connecting buildings becoming commonplace, but structures as diverse as the Civil and Mining Engineering Building on the University of Minnesota campus, a road-and-fleet maintenance facility in Multnomah County, OR, and even an ice cream parlor (Dairy Queen) in northern Wisconsin have been constructed underground. Placing utilities below the surface has numerous advantages and is now customary. Rapid transit and highways through tunnels in urban areas have been the norm for many years, but subterranean stormwater reservoirs, power plants, industrial warehouses, and food storage silos are relatively new innovations. The philosophy of underground defense installations is ancient, but their requirements and designs have trans-formed radically as technology advances. The use of under-ground space for disposition of wastes is modern, since it is recently that environmental concerns and waste disposal costs have assumed increased significance.

Three rocks of highly varied physical properties are selected for the first reported experimental study concerning microseismic activity of rock under tension to determine the effects of static fatigue, loading rate, repeated loading and rock anistropy compared to compression and bending loads. The microseismic method of detecting rock under deformation may be a great potential tool in surveillance and location in situ of dangerously stressed strata, as well as predicting rock failures. Noises emitted under load or the rate of energy (energy of noise pulses generated per unit time) are computed for varying conditions. The tests are conducted at constant load on a dead weight loading machine to eliminate all possible extraneous noises — an indispensable precaution — at various load levels. Experimental results are reported including the relation of total energy emitted to tensile strength of rock and the possibility of simulating a phenomenological model for microseismic activity. Plots of some of the experiments are included. INTRODUCTION Rock failure, whether on a large scale faulting in the earth's crust and rock bursts in mines, or on small scale ruptures of laboratory test specimens, generates transient vibrations in the rock mass. Mechanisms of intermittent deformation, such as twinning and cracking through and between mineral grains, also produce similar vibrations, but of very small amplitude. "INTRODUCTION During the period from September 18 to November 27, 1944, the Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation and exploratory churn-drilling program in an area immediately north of the Crow Branch Diggings, a district lying approximately 2 1/2 miles southwest of the town of Livingston in Grant County, Wisconsin.The work was undertaken as part of a general Bureau of Mines investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin at a time when all effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the Nation's war prrgram.Although no mining has been done in the district in recent years the Crow Branch Diggings were an important source of galena and may be found today in the dumps remaining from old surface-mining operations.The Bureau of Mines undertook an exploratory churn-drilling program on the northwestern projection of the general strike of the digging in a zone where subsurface,lead and zinc mineralization had been reported from drilling done in the early 1900's."

The Green River Valley in Kent, Washington, is a fast growing area containing retail facilities, warehouse factories and industrial businesses, including the Boeing Space Center. Traffic from Interstate - 5 to the West Valley Highway is highly congested. Accordingly, a new corridor, including a bridge across the Green River, was designed and constructed between 1996 and 1997. This paper presents a case history of the design elements and issues associated with the construction of the pier foundations of the bridge. Subsurface conditions were evaluated using both deep test borings and CPT soundings to evaluate the strength and consolidation properties of the supporting soils. Subsurface conditions consisted of alternating layers of loose and medium dense silty sand and sandy silt. Engineering analysis included an assessment of liquefaction as well as pier supporting capacity and associated settlement. The constructed foundations included 6-foot-diameter piers cased to a depth of 120 feet below the ground surface. The pier casings were driven to the design tip elevation and the soil inside the casing was removed by drilling. Despite performing borings and CPT soundings at specific pier locations, occasional trees, buried thousands of years ago through geologic processes, were surprisingly encountered during pier construction. This presented unique and difficult driving and drilling conditions. During drilling, the water level inside the piers was maintained near the ground surface to create a balance of hydrostatic pressure and prevent boiling of soils the bottom of the casing. After the casings were installed, the soil inside the casing was excavated, the rebar cage was installed and the pier was filled with concrete using treme techniques. Construction of the piers is complete and the completed piers have experienced negligible settlement. Para ello, se revisa las dos últimas recesiones económicas que tuvo el Banco entre 1975 y 1982, donde la crisis se agudizó por una caída en los precios de los metales y una inflación de costos que no pudo ser transmitida al precio de venta. Como consecuencia de ello, las empresas mineras que tuvieron préstamos, acusaron pérdidas en sus ejercicios e incumplieron en el pago de sus obligaciones. Como medida anti-crisis, el Banco Minero estableció comisiones de alto nivel para evaluar las situaciones y recomendar la dación de dispositivos legales que permitieron asistir a los Pequeños y Medianos mineros en la restitución de liquidez mediante préstamos sobre liquidaciones a precios deprimidos, Asimismo, generó la consolidación, refinanciación y moratoria de los clientes que estaban en suspensión de pagos de las obligaciones contraídas con el Banco Minero y la creación de líneas de crédito especiales para la Pequeña Minería.

The Sales Comparison Approach to estimating the value of a mineral property must always be attempted1 . In addition to other parameters, the approach depends heavily on the availability of transaction data. The consideration for the mineral property must be in form of cash, cash equivalent or other consideration. In other words, “What dollar amount did the property sell for?” Mineral properties are generally real estate, albeit frequently buried deeply under the overlying surface real estate, unless the property may be a quarry. In some states, transactions must be recorded in county courthouses, and the sale consideration must be included. In such cases, the appraiser’s job is made easy. In other locations, the sale considerations are withheld in the courthouse data; but occasionally a local transfer tax is collected and recorded. Again, the appraiser’s job is made easy by back calculation with knowledge of the legislated transfer tax percentage. The worst problem occurs when the consideration for a mineral real estate sale is totally withheld. That may occur in so-called nondisclosure states.
