"The Ventura County Medical Center Hospital Replacement Wing project consists of the construction of a 2- to 3-story building with a basement encompassing the entire footprint and two corridors connecting the new hospital wing to existing buildings. The site is located in the Ventura Basin where strong ground shaking has been observed during moderate to large earthquakes on nearby faults. The upper 90 feet of the soil consists of loose to medium dense finegrained sands and low plasticity silts that are potentially susceptible to liquefaction, seismic densification, and hydroconsolidation. Ground settlement associated with a large seismic event on a nearby fault is estimated at 20 to 26 inches. To account for the anticipated ground settlement, auger pressure grouted (APG) piles gaining support below the potentially liquefiable soil were selected for the support of the proposed structure. Challenges for pile design included the anticipated earthquake-induced ground settlement, high downdrag loads, low soil lateral capacity during strong ground shaking, and the effect of pile installation on the performance of the existing adjacent buildings and the installed shoring system. The replacement hospital is supported on over 600 APG piles, with lengths varying between 120 and 140 feet. Axial pile capacities were verified with an extensive indicator pile installation program and dynamic pile load testing.INTRODUCTIONThe Hospital Replacement Wing (HRW) project is at the Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC) in Ventura County, Southern California (Figure 1). The VCMC consists of three interconnected hospital buildings (Buildings 303, 304, and Fainer Building), the Medical Laboratory/Cafeteria Building, two mental health buildings, a medical office building, an emergency generator building, and surface parking lots. The HRW is near the center of the campus, adjacent to several existing buildings.The HRW is a 2- to 3-story structure, with a 15- to 20-foot-deep basement beneath the entire 95,000-square-foot building footprint. The HRW project includes a Loading Dock, a four-level corridor to the Fainer Building (Fainer connector), and a two-level corridor to the Medical Laboratory/Cafeteria Building (Café connector). The corridors are structurally separated from the existing buildings. Typical dead plus live load column loads for the HRW range from about 635 kips to 935 kips and total loads range from about 860 kips to 1,295 kips."

"This work was begun in l928, with the cooperation of the American, Gas Association, and the Association contributed financial aid for that year and for the 4 years following. In 1933 financial aid was discontinued, but the Advisory Committee, under the able, Chairmanship of J. S. Haug, has continued to function through the years to the present date. Mr. Haug's annual reports have been published in the Proceedings of the American Gas Association. The purpose of this paper is to bring the index of coals tested by the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (EM-AGA) method up to date, to discuss development of auxiliary tests, and to outiline the uses to which the methods have been put in promoting the war effort.COALS TESTEDThe test methods developed with the advice of the Advisory Committee had been applied to 66 coals up to 1942, and an index giving the serial number, origin, and analyses of these coals was published as Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 637. Since this paper was published, 20 additional coals have been tested; the source and analyses of these coals are given in table 1. The table also refers to publications that have been issued. Complete series of tests at high, medium, and low temperatures,have been made on most of these coals, and blending tests with 20 and 30 30 percent of low-volatile coals have also been made at 900°C.; however a few low- and medium-volatile coals (60, 70, 74, 79, and 80) were bested,at high temperatures only. Those coals were mined in eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas. The test work included low- and high-temperature assay tests, petrorraphic analyses, and plasticity tests since its inception; and for the last 20 coals of the series, expansion and oxidation tests have been made where applicable."

China’s mineral deposits are the result of metallogenic processes associated with the geodynamic evolution of tectonic plates and eventual amalgamation into their modern configuration. The principal tectonic provinces of China comprise the North China Craton, Yangtze Craton, Cathaysia Craton, Tarim block, Altay-Tianshan-Hinggan orogens (part of the Central Asian Orogenic Bel), Central China orogens, Songpan-Ganze orogen and Alpine-Himalayan fold belts, which are part of the huge Tethysides. These tectonic elements are testimony to a complex geological history spanning more than 3000 million years. This contribution will focus on selected areas of the Altay-Tianshan, the fold belts surrounding the North China Craton and Yangtze Craton and the mineral systems along the Ailaoshan-Red River fault zone. Mineral deposits in these provinces include gold, copper, molybdenum, tin, antimony, nickel, platinum group elements, lead and zinc.CITATION:Pirajno, F, 2015. This paper describes the use of post- tensioned rock anchors to reduce the risk of future damage to a residential structure as a result of coal mine subsidence. The project described in this paper was performed by the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) of the U. S. Department of the Interior. The OSMRE was created to administer Public Law 95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. The responsibilities of OSMRE include "reclamation and restoration of land and water resources, adversely affected by past coal mining including prevention, abatement, control of coal mine subsidence. ?('l) Consequently, OSMRE has been addressing mine subsidence problems since its initial subsidence stabilization project in 1979. Stabilization activities have primarily consisted of supporting the overburden material by injecting materials through drilled bore holes into the underground mine voids. Injection of various materials into mine voids, including fly ash mixtures, coal refuse, cement grout, and gravel has proven to be a successful method of reducing mine subsidence-related surface movements, and has been extensively utilized in mitigating mine subsidence problems. However, the cost of drilling for injection can be extremely high in areas where the depth to the coal seam is great.

In the course of the Bureau of Mines investigation relative to the causes, behavior, and control of anthracite-mine fires, attention was directed toward the correlation between the temperature of oxidation and the gaseous oxidation products in the range of temperatures between 100° and 350°C4/. These tests, made on a high-grade anthracite to determine the amount of oxygen consumed and the mounts of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methane evolved when air was passed through samples of the anthracite at various elevated temperatures, showed that the gases evolved and their relative proportions vary with temperature, constitute a means for determining the probable temperature of the anthracite, and thus permit detection of incipient heating beers dangerous fire hazard exists. As the relationships mentioned are affected somewhat by the amount of previous oxidation of the coal, it was deemed desirable to know to what extent they might vary owing to this cause. It was also considered desirable to have a means for estimating the extent of oxidation from the gas analysis, as this would permit a more accurate estimate of probable temperature. Finally, it seemed desirable to know how much the composition of coal might vary over an extended period of oxidation, since this was previously suggested5/ as a possible means for estimating the probable maximum oxidation temperature to which a sample of coal had been subjected.

Discussion is presented by Prof. King and Dr. Schneider of the paper by Lin, Gomez and Finch published in Trans.IMM C, vol.104, 1995, p.C155-C161. They conclude that the correction procedures used for simulated observations of simulated capped spheres are not reliable when applied to mineralogical data and that their relative ranking should not be extrapolated to other situations. Properly regularised solutions obtained with the use of appropriate kernels can be safely used for routine mineral liberation work and can be calibrated accurately against real mineralogical samples in the laboratory

To further investigate the potential of precast concrete sets as a support medium for underground mines, the Bureau of Mines designed an eight-piece precast reinforced concrete drift set for a small opening. Twenty-two sets of three different member sizes were tested to destruction under two loading conditions. A discussion of the test results and typical failure patterns is presented.

"INTRODUCTION In the manufacture, storage, transportation, and use of combustible gases and vapors, explosion hazards, which at times may be present when air becomes mixed with the gases and vapors, become of primary importance. Such conditions are especially dangerous where large volumes of gaseous atmosphere are involved, because an explosion under such circumstances is capable of doing tremendous damage to both property and personnel.Because of its interest in safety in the mining and allied industries, the Federal Bureau of Mines has investigated, and published results dealing with, the explosibility of various types of combutible atmospheres. The explosion hazards of natural gases have received attention, and results giving the limits of inflammability and ignition temperatures in air have been determined and published. 4/ Other investigations have shown how explosions of natural gas-air mixtures may be prevented by the addition of nitrogen and carbon dioxide. 5/Because of the increased demand for crude oil for war purposes, the application of secondary-recovery methods of stimulating oil production have received considerable attention during the last few years. The process consists in the injection of natural gas into partly depleted oil wells to cause the oil in the sands to flow into producing wells and so increase the amount of recoverable oil. 6/"

In 1989, the Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral resource investigation of the 52,350-acre Jersey Jack study area, located in the Clearwater Mountains of north-central Idaho. Twenty-eight mines and prospects were examined, and 483 rock, placer, and petrographic samples were collected during the field study. Two properties contain gold resources; mining company data show the Robinson Dike mine contains an estimated 940,000 tons of "drill proven and probable reserves" averaging 0.041 oz/ton gold, and the Bureau of Mines investigation showed the Blacksand placer mine contains an estimated 64,000 cubic yards of identified placer resources averaging $8.13 in gold per cubic yard. Sample analyses from other properties indicate that gold resources are likely to exist; however the low tonnage, narrow, fissure-vein type deposits would require mining by relatively high-cost underground methods and would be subeconomic at a gold price of $400/oz.

One Bureau of Mines goal is to minimize the undesirable environmental impacts associated with industrial plants emitting waste gases containing S02. To help meet this goal, a regenerable flue gas desulfurization process was developed. This process, known as the citrate process, uses a buffered weak acid solution to absorb S02 from the waste gas. The absorbed S02 is reacted with H2S to precipitate elemental sulfur and regenerate the solution for recycle. The H2S feedstock for the process, if not otherwise available, may be produced by reacting two-thirds of the recovered elemental sulfur with natural gas and steam. Laboratory investigations and pilot plant operations were conducted by the Bureau to determine if H2S from the natural gas, sulfur, and steam reaction was suitable for the citrate process. The laboratory investigations, in which an H2S generator was integrated with other citrate process operations, provided a basis for design and operation of the pilot plant. The objective of the pilot plant was primarily to provide H2S for the citrate pro-cess pilot plant at the Bunker Hill Co. lead smelter in Kellogg, Idaho. The design capacity of the pilot plant was 0.4 to 1.25 tons of H2S per day. The operation demonstrated that (1) a 77-to 79-dry-volume-percent H2S product could be produced from pilot-plant product sulfur, natural gas, and steam; (2) the product R2S regenerated the SO2-loaded citrate solution; and (3) under certain conditions over 95 percent of the natural gas could be converted to H2S.

It is difficult to predict accurately the capacity of driven piles in sand. In practice, this uncer­tainty either leads to conservative designs if the capacity is under-predicted, or worse, if the capacity is over-predicted, it can lead to severe foundation problems. One significant possible cause of the problem is that currently available semi-empirical design methods do not capture the fundamental mechanisms that govern the load capacity of driven piles in sands. As part of a recent research project at City University centrifuge tests on a driven model pile in sands have been undertaken. A fully instrumented model pile was constructed and pushed into samples of quartz and carbonate sand thus covering a wide range of mineralogies. Tri-axial tests were used to determine the fundamental patterns of behavior of the sands. This allowed a general framework to be established, in which the in situ stress:volume relationship is shown to govern the capacity of the pile. The paper sets out with a brief introduction of the experimental techniques used in the study. The results of the pile tests are discussed in detail with particular attention given to distribution of the radial stresses along the pile shaft. Existing design methods for piles in sand are then discussed in the light of the new understanding gained from the research, highlighting their deficiencies and suggesting an improved approach.

Plant operators in the mineral processing industry have been implementing expert systems for several years now, with the intent to increase production and reduce costs. Most systems have been installed on grinding circuits of some type and have proven that the technology is viable in that application. However, few applications on other processes have been attempted for various reasons, such as lack of reference sites, complexity of the process, lack of suitable measurements and lack of confidence in the technology. The successful application of an expert system on an Alumina Calcining kiln is the first such application in the West Indies Alumina Company (Windalco), and demonstrates how this technology can be successfully applied to other processes. The key objective of an expert system is to optimize the process. To achieve this the process must first be stabilized, followed by optimization of the operating parameters. The steps taken by this expert system to optimize the process are: • Check for abnormal conditions and deal with them using a prioritized set of special actions. • Use a selection of rule blocks to stabilize the process. • Once the process is stable, achieve additional benefits through further optimization of the process. The potential benefits that a user can expect to achieve through installing an expert system can be assessed on the basis that performance will improve from that of an "average operator" to that of the "best operator" performing at his optimum for 24 hours a day, every day. The quantifiable process benefits include: • Increased production • More consistent product quality • Reduced operating costs • Reduced standard deviation of key variables • Consistent plant operation The success of this project was measured in several ways: project implementation, realised economic benefits, and realised non-economic benefits. With a commitment to maintain the system over the long term, the longevity of the system is assured and will become an important part of the Alumina Calcining control strategy at Windalco. This paper discusses the various phases of implementing the ABB Expert Optimizer expert system, what the benefits were and the procedure that is in place to maintain the system to ensure continued long term success.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions4/ issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous .sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

This final report describes the work performed by Gulton Battery Corporation under USBM Contract No. HO-112033, entitled "Research and Development on Lithium-Nickel Fluoride Batteries For Mint Life Support Equipment". The lithium-nickel fluoride couple was chosen For this investigation because of its high theoretical energy density (626 Wh/lb), its ability to operate at ambient temperatures and the fact that it showed promise as a secondary system. The theoretical energy density of the lithium-nickel fluoride couple is ten times greater than that of the widely used lead-acid battery and three times greater than the silver-zinc battery which has the highest theoretical energy density of the commercially available secondary systems. The experimental program first evaluated the cell components individually. The results of these studies then formed the basis for investigations of cell performance using experimental three-plate cells. These cells consisted of one nickel-fluoride and two lithium electrodes. All work was performed in a glove box under an argon atmosphere which was sufficiently pure to maintain the shiny appearance on freshly prepared lithium surfaces. The major portion of the work effort was concerned with the nickel fluoride electrode. Binder, conductive diluent, fabrication technique, as well as the nickel fluoride active material itself, were considered. Criteria for binder materials were established and six classes of materials encompassing thirteen binders were evaluated. The candidate materials were initially screened for appropriate chemical and physical properties and finally evaluated in three.-plate cells, Two epoxy powders emerged as the most promising binders. Two types of conductive diluent were evaluated. The first is a carbon black of low bulk density and high surface area. This material is a good conductive diluent; however, electrodes fabricated with it lacked good mechanical strength. It was hypothesized that a uni¬form, small particle size, low specific surface area would improve the mechanical properties of the electrodes. Therefore, two samples of graphicic materials, milled to uniform powders in the one-to-ten micron range were evaluated. Electrodes prepared with the graphitic materials had superior mechanical properties, However, their electrical performance was significantly poorer and voltage losses of 0.2 to 0.3 volts were observed. Several electrolyte solutions were evaluated. N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone was tested but found to be incompatible in the presence of lithium. Lithium perchlorate, lithium hexafluoroarsenate, and lithium bromide were tested as two-component electrolytes in propylene carbonate solvent and their performance compared with that of the single electrolyte solutions, Lithium perchlorate gave the best performance. Lithium hexafluoroarsenate was also evaluated in methyl formate and appears to give equivalent performance. The lithium perchlorate-propylene carbonate system is preferred as it is easier to handle and less expensive.

When deciding to deploy rescue teams underground the decision makers need to be able to determine that there won?t be an explosion whilst the rescue teams are underground. Previously general body concentrations in areas likely to be travelled were compared to explosive limits on a one off basis with no formal process looking at trends or other areas. A new approach is being adopted that takes into account the rate of change of gas concentrations with triggers set to enable a withdrawal of personnel prior to a possible explosion and influences such a barometric pressure changes. This paper explains the rationale behind the changes made and the advantages and implications of adopting such an approach.

This report summarizes a study conducted to determine the state of the art of various rock removal systems and their capabilities. The objective of the study was to determine if currently manufactured equipment can adequately accomplish rock removal in surface mine reclamation applications. Evaluations of state reclamation regulations, with regard to topsoil rock content, were made to determine the rock removal requirements. The major categories of equipment studied are rock pickers and rock rakes. The impact of rock removal implementation on the reclamation operations is discussed in detail.

?Intelligent mine? conjures up a futuristic image of unmanned extractors and loaders working in harsh conditions in a remote lunar landscape. The promise of increasing mine fleet productivity and solving the problem labor shortages in mining regions can certainly be achieved today through remote controlled extraction and automated hauling. The technology is available and it doesn?t seem to be so much science fiction when Google?s self-driving cars hurtle down the freeway. ?Intelligent mining,? on the other hand, implies the application of information technology at every phase of the mining value chain, from exploration and geological modeling to equipment, operations and maintenance, and logistics and transportation. These are really industry-specific, enterprise-class software solutions focused on using information technology to support the business processes of mining and make them more efficient and effective. Overlaying the physical world with the digital or virtual world enables us to model and simulate our assets, giving us the ability to effectively design, build, and ultimately optimize the performance and reliability of our assets throughout the lifecycle. The digital asset, often a 3D model, is created initially during the engineering and construction phase, and is handed over to the operator before the mine goes into operation. Combined with geospatial or geographic information systems, the operator has a complete digital representation of the physical world, which forms the foundation for risk and performance management, along with compliance and regulatory reporting. Laser scanning and positioning technology can be used to create point clouds ? information models consisting of millions of data points ? which enable the visualization and representation of the ?as-operated? reality. But consider that once the mine is in operation, it throws off an endless stream of data in the form of performance and condition data from sensors and monitoring devices on fixed and mobile assets through networks, servers, and services. This ?big data? can be processed and analyzed to spot trends, help predict events, and formulate reliability strategies as early as the design stage (e.g., reliability-centered design). ?Intelligent mining? implies that massive amounts of data augment the reality of the physical mine, plant, and equipment. This embedded intelligence can be used to optimize operational efficiency, increase asset availability and utilization, improve safety and environmental integrity, and maximize return on investment. Lastly, the sweet spot for intelligent mining is seen in the convergence of consumerization and industrialization. The application of ?consumer? technologies that we use every day on our iPhones and Android devices, such as cameras, motion sensors, and positioning in an industrial context, are producing ?immersive? experiences. Overlaying the digital world on the physical world and connecting them accurately through intelligent positioning results in ?intelligent infrastructure,? which is safer and more sustainable. This Bureau of Mines report presents a review of underground testing, test results, and design guidelines of steel-fiber-reinforced concrete (SFC) mine support (cribbing) developed at the Spokane Research Center. The objective of the work was to verify, in field applications, the performance, economics, and acceptance by the mining industry of the SFC supports and establish design guidelines for their use underground. Results indicate superior performance, favorable economics, and enthusiastic acceptance by the mining industry.
