In an underground mine operated with panel caving and subjected to high stresses, geotechnical events such as collapses or rock bursts are fairly recurrent. Both situations can involve risks for people, considerable production losses and increasing operational costs.This paper discusses an operational methodology for the recovery of the undercutting front carried out at El Teniente mine, which uses panel cave mining with post-undercutting, after the occurrence of severe damage due to a seismic cluster. The main objective of the recovery of the undercutting front is to prevent the spread of the collapse to the production level, risking the operational continuity. The methodology is the result of repairs that were carried out in the year 2014 at the North Reserves sector from El Teniente mine. Its characteristics are an undercutting front of almost 1000 m long, with the presence of relevant structures and faults, high stresses and high seismic activity.The practical implementation of the proposed methodology was successful since it prevented the spread of the damage, completely recovered the undercutting front and avoided production losses during the execution of the repairs. Also, considering the origin of the damage and the operations associated to the subsequent recovery of the undercutting front, in this paper we discuss the main control variables to be measured. This report is an engineering-economic evaluation of alternate methods of handling the parting between two coal seams. It consists of evaluations of parting stowing techniques applicable in a representative, thick seam western United States mine. Methods are examined for their potential implementation, and an estimated operating cost per yard of material moved is developed. The methods are of two categories castback or haulback. Haulback methods use truck haulage except With scrapers, and the castback methods are a direct stowage with no intermediate haulage equipment. Possible equipment combinations include draglines, shovels, hydraulic backhoes, bucket wheel excavators, scrapers, and front end loaders. The purpose of this report is to evaluate the effective competetiveness of the various alternatives.

This report describes economic mining feasibility studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines to estimate mining costs in the Porcupine mining area of the Juneau Mining District, southeastern Alaska. Investigations were conducted on the economics of three mineral deposit types: 1) massive sulfide deposits containing zinc, copper, and silver, 2) vein gold, and 3)disseminated gold. Cost estimates were developed using the Bureau of mines Cost Estimating S,-stem. Discounted cash flow rates of return were calculated using the Bureau of Mines MINSIM (mining simulation) computer program. Three sets of metal prices were used in the study based on recent historical price information. Underground longhole stope mining of a massive sulfide deposit containing 25 pct zinc. 1 pct copper, and 63.6 g/mt silver was found to be economic at high metal prices at a quantity of 13,200,000 mt ore. Cut-and-fill mining of a 26,400,000 mt massive sulfide deposit was found to be economic at medium metal prices. Open pit mining of a similar deposit was found to he economic at medium metal prices and 26,400,000 mt ore, or at high metal prices and 6,600,000 mt ore. Underground mining of a vein gold deposit was found to be economic at a grade of 17.1 g/mt medium metal prices and 1,320,000 mt ore. Open pit mining of a disseminated gold deposit was found to be economic at a grade of 1.71 g/mt medium metal prices and a quantity of 39,600,000 mt ore.

Electrical trailing cable used to power coal mining machinery is frequently damaged in usage because of tensile strain or crushing effect of mining machines running over the cable. One of the repair problems is finding the exact location of a short or open in this cable so it may be spliced or otherwise repaired. The U.S. Bureau of Mines and FMC corporation signed Contract No. H0 122011 in August, 1971, to develop instrumentation for finding faults in coal mine trailing cable. This report describes performance of several existing instruments as trailing cable fault locators and also construction details and performance records of several cable fault location instruments that FMC designed, built and tested as part of this project.

Concentration and composition of rare earth elements (REE) and major elements in the sediment samples from the IOM H11 Fe-Mn nodule deposit, eastern part of the Clarion-Clipperton nodule field (located between the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone - CCFZ; tropical Pacific), have been studied. We show the controls on REE concentrations and described vertical/horizontal variability of selected metals in pelagic sediments from the CCFZ. According to Kato et al. (2011), who analyzed 2000 seafloor sediment samples at 78 sites of the Pacific Ocean, deep-sea mud shows high concentrations (2230 ppm maximum) of ?REY and could be potential resource of these elements in the future. However, our work does not fully confirm that sediments in the IOM H11 are significantly enriched in REE.

Most of us are aware of the ever increasing use of underground space. At the Advisory Conference on tunneling in Washington, D. C. in June of 1970, the demand for construction oriented tunneling during the 1970s was estimated at some 21,000 Km of length with an excavation volume of 675 million cubic meters. Of this total, 11 million cubic meters were forecast for underground parking. Though this is a small portion of the total, it is significant to note it represents a 280% increase over the previous decade. Other areas of unusual increase were railroad tunnels, 150%, and rapid transit tunnels, 160% (1). Faced with this increasing demand, the need for improved excavating efficiency is obvious. Great strides have been made. In Japan, for example, several new long tunnels have been driven parallel to old existing ones at costs as much as 50; under those of the original tunnels (1). This is an impressive achievement. I am certain, however, that we would all agree that even greater improvement is required. Great emphasis is being placed upon sophisticated systems which include among others, mechanical borers, thermal fracturing, and various methods of rock weakening and softening. However, in hard rock excavation the fact remains that the drill-blast method continues to be the most widely used system. Undoubtedly it will continue to be one of the most important techniques in the forseeable future.

This paper is the fourth of a series of preliminary papers on smelting in the lead blast furnace.4 The objects of this investigation are to determine the conditions obtaining within the blast furnace by direct experimentation and to correlate these conditions with operating factors, furnace behavior, and metallurgical losses. This paper presents the performance of nineteen open-ended steel pipe piles driven through highly variable overburden soils into glacial till and schist bedrock. The piles were 16 inches in diameter and 0.656 inches thick, with yield strength of 50 ksi. The piles were designed for a service capacity of 250 kips and were driven to achieve an ultimate geotechnical capacity of at least 500 kips. Due to the large variation in the ground conditions, installed pile lengths ranged from 25 to 66 feet. Some piles were driven to refusal on the bedrock while others were terminated at final driving resistance of 2 to 7 blows/in. Two piles were suspected to be plugged during driving while others did not. Each pile was instrumented with strain gages and accelerometers near the pile top, and observed using a Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) to provide preliminary guidance on pile capacity achieved at end of initial drive (EOID). The influence of plugged and unplugged pile toe conditions on the interpretation of pile capacity was investigated using Case Pile Wave Analysis Program (CAPWAP). Characteristics of driving energy, compressive and tensile stresses developed in the steel pipe piles, and the resulting pile deformation behavior are discussed. INTRODUCTION The Hunters Point South redevelopment in Long Island City, Queens is one of New York City’s major efforts to transform former manufacturing zones into mixed developments for the middle-income community. The site is located along the eastern shoreline of the East River and Newtown Creek. The development included low to high-rise residential buildings, a public school and retail structures. Open spaces were created along the East River and Newtown Creek waterfronts in the form of a continuous park providing for recreational and community related activities. Waterfront structures included small park buildings, walkways and viewing platforms with the shoreline protected by revetments as part of the City’s flood mitigation strategy. The project was implemented in two phases, with completion of construction for Phase 1 in 2013 and Phase 2 in 2019. Based on available historical information, extensive reclamation took place between 1855 and 1898. After 1951, changes to the shoreline were made along the East River, including the removal of reclaimed land along the northern portion of the project site to allow for docking facilities. By 1977, these facilities had been demolished and backfilled to form the current shoreline configuration. The present site was temporarily used as a parking lot with stockpiles of fill mixed with construction demolition rubble, rip-rap and boulders of varying heights across the site. The existing ground surface varied significantly up to approximately 25 feet difference in elevation. The stockpiles were removed and the site was re-graded during final development of the project. This paper discusses the foundation design challenges due to the loose overburden soils and potential obstructions within the fill material, in particular, the issues relating to installation of open-ended steel pipe piles through the ground conditions encountered on site.

In recognition of the need for a portable low-profile hard rock crusher, the Bureau of Mines sponsored the development of such a unit capable of moving up as the face advances. By allowing primary ore reduction at or near the mine face, the advantages of conveyor haulage From the face as demonstrated in soft ore and coal mines, could be realized for hard rock Brines as well. This report presents the results of a development and testing program for such a portable low-profile crusher, designed by Eagle Crusher Company and called the M44. The unit has an extremely low vertical profile considering its size and capacity. The crushing jaws, which form the crushing lumber, are inclined, with the lower jaw mounted for eccentric movement relative to the stationary upper jaw. This provides efficient crushing while also forcing material through the crushing chamber. As a result, the inlet feeder can be disposed horizontally. To facilitate correct processing of different materials, the size of the discharge opening and the action of the movable crushing jaw are variable. The unit also incorporates a feeder hopper and discharge conveyor that provides for efficient ore handling through the machine. Tests demonstrated the M44 Crusher's high capacity, efficiency and reliability. During testing, it crushed over 120,000 tons of materials of up to 32,000 psi compressive strength at production rates in the 200-350 tons/hour range. The unit operated smoothly under simulated low-headroom conditions, and Proved readily transportable.

The purpose of this study was to develop procedures to measure Bingham flow properties for mine tailings and to use these to predict the possible consequences of a hypothetical tailings flow failure at the Tenmile Tailings Pond at Climax, Colorado. The consequences of such a failure were found to be minimal, and the failure itself highly; unlikely. Values of Ty (Bingham yield shear strength) and np (plastic viscosity) were measured for 10 materials using results obtained from vaned coaxial viscometer tests and triaxial tests.

When heated in the absence of oxygen, pyrite from refractory gold concentrates decomposes endothermically to pyrrhotite, releasing sulphur. The decomposition starts at the particle surface and progresses inwards, leaving an adhering layer of porous pyrrhotite. Use of the conventional shrinking-core model implicitly assumes a negligible partial pressure of sulphur in the bed, but this pressure is in fact at least equal to the equilibrium vapour pressure of sulphur over pyrite, constituting the principal control of the rate of decomposition. Further experiments showed a decrease in reaction rate as the conversion increased. Both phenomena are attributed to the persistence of non-isothermal conditions in the fluidised bed during pyrolysis, caused by the endothermic nature of the reaction and the relatively slow rates of heat transfer to particles and vapour removal from the bed. This information circular describes the application of modern methods and equipment in sinking a vertical, 916-foot-deep by 16-foot-diameter, concrete-lined access shaft for the Harold D. Roberts tunnel near Montezuma, Colo. Although the access shaft was merely a construction facility to expedite completion of a 23-mile water-diversion tunnel, a circular shaft of this type would be equally adaptable for mine development or other purposes. Comparable sinking methods and equipment could be used for similar shafts within a wide range of sizes and depths. SUMMARY In addition to excavation and support of the basic access shaft to tunnel grade, the overall sinking project involved initial preparation of a surface site and plant, subsequent construction of a tunnel-level station and loading pocket at the shaft bottom, and ultimate conversion of the basic shaft into a hoisting and access facility for tunnel operations. The sinking period for the basic shaft approximated one year. Actual tunnel operations through the converted shaft began on April 3, 1958, approximately 19 months after the project was initiated.

New developments in the non-invasive and real-time measurement of the velocity profile of slurry flow in horizontal pipes will be described. This information can be used to determine the approach and onset of solid deposition on the bottom of the pipe. Having this information in real time can enable operation at lower velocities or higher solids concentration or both while avoiding solids deposition or plugging and their associated operational costs. In addition, advances have been made in the measurement and trending of pipewear on slurry lines. In contrast to manual methods, CiDRA?s system uses a permanently or semi-permanently installed ring of conformable ultrasonic transducers clamped onto the outside of the pipe. These transducers are used to measure the thickness of the pipe under their respective locations. This results in better repeatability, accuracy, and failure prediction, along with reduced labor costs. The benefit is significantly improved pipe wear monitoring in pipelines with abrasive solids. This provides an improvement in the ability to insure safe operation and avoidance of costly operational and environmental damage due to leaks caused by pipe wear.

There is an alternative theory of the high grade orebodies of the Middleback Group, based on the primary nature of the high grade ores in an area of carbonate deposition, with lesser amounts of siliceous and aluminous sediments. The environment is thought to have been unstable, possibly volcanic, and to have been a subsiding basin, substantially isolated from the open sea.Jaspilites, iron bearing talc rocks and iron bearing carbonate rocks were derived from the primary sediments by metasomatic alteration after metamorphism.The metasomatic agents were carbon dioxide and water vapour which were mobilized from the primary dolomite and reacted with a metamorphically produced group of iron bearing and iron free amphiboles, forming talc and progressively releasing silica and iron oxides from the iron amphiboles.The talc rocks in turn released silica which reconstituted jaspilites into their present 200 ft thick crust or zone.The theory accounts for the present disposition of a jaspilite zone over a talc zone which in turn overlies a carbonate zone, and accounts for the down dip changes found in bores which penetrate these zones.INTRODUCTIONIron Duke (Fig. 1) lies some 34 miles south west of WhyalIa in South Australia, and is the most southerly ore body in the Middleback Ranges.The Middleback Ranges are divided into a northern range and a southern range meridionally disposed and separated by an erosion gap called Kimba Gap.The South Middleback Range contains four orebodies;Iron Duke at the southern extremity, Iron Duchess north of Iron Duke and on the same ridge, Iron Knight also on the same ridge, which has been breached by erosion between theDuchess and Knight orebodies, and north east of Iron Knight, the Iron Chieftain.Cook's Range is the eastern range of the South Middleback Range and no large orebodies are known to occur there.

The name Porcupine brings with it the legacy of over twenty individual mining companies in operation at any one time, producing over 65 million ounces of gold.

"The Falconbridge Limited approach to employing communication equipment is first, to determine what is required in a given situation, second, to evaluate the possible alternatives, third, to select the most suitable hardware and, fourth, to determine what modifications, if any, are required to ensure not only successful implementation but continued low-cost reliability. Two examples are examined.The first situation required remote video monitoring of an acid loadout station. Several alternatives for linking to theremote site were investigated, including hard-wired, slow-scan and microwave. A comparison of these alternatives is shown and an appraisal of the performance of the selected microwave link is presented.The second situation required direct voice contact between the two members of an underground tram crew. Alternative solutions are described and an evaluation of the selected system- SHF portable radios - is presented.ObjectivesIn general, projects must have four main objectives: (1) to improve the safety of its operations; (2) to reduce its operating and capital costs; (3) to increase the efficiency of its work force; and (4) to increase its productivity. ScopeCommunication, when used wisely, can be a good tool to achieve these objectives. Projects can be kept simple using existing technology and adapting it to a particular task. To ensure the success of the project, it was necessary: to determine the project objectives; to evaluate the possible alternatives; to select the most suitable hardware; to adapt the hardware to the application, if required; and not to provide more than is necessary.Application at FalconbridgeTo illustrate this approach, two examples of actual installations at the Sudbury Operations are presented, sulphuric acid loadout, and the Falconbridge Mine haulage system."

The deposit was discovered during systematic reconstruction of the geological history of glacial overburden, which averages 6 m in thickness over 80% of Sweden, by geochemical sampling and searching for small grains of eroded bedrock. The gold is mainly concentrated in and around high-grade quartz veins within a broad shear zone, though the correlation coefficient between quartz and gold in samples is not significant. Production from two pits, now connected, in the Central and Eastern orebodies has increased steadily from 1 238 kg Au in 1989 to 2 120 kg in 1994, the highest in Europe. The mine has adapted and improved its mining methods to achieve significant productivity increases and cost reductions. Most of the improvements have been achieved through a better understanding of the controls on mineralisation and of the implications of those controls for selective mining. Geostatistics has played an important role in the quantification of grade variability and gold occurrence. Better blasting and loading techniques have improved selectivity, grade control has been enhanced by a grade-control drilling programme, and significant improvements in mineral processing have been made

This report presents results from a study whose objective was to evaluate noise control options for existing equipment used in metal and non-metal processing plants. This equipment performs 3 basic functions, crushing, grinding to a point where the product can be liberated from the waste, and agglomeration A the product. Specifically, the study was directed towards taconite processing since the extreme hardness of taconite results in high noise levels and in considerable maintenance of the processing equipment. Both of these factors make this process a very challenging noise control task. Plants processing other ores use similar equipment, consequently the results of these studies should he applicable to a wide variety of plants. The report presents the source diagnosis and potential retrofit noise control treatments for fine screens, mills, crusher sizing screens, and vacuum disc filters. Estimates are make of the noise reduction from each treatment. The report concludes with recommendations for future research on each piece of equipment.
