Magnesium alloy, being the lightest structural material, is a key candidate for the weight reduction of vehicles in automotive and aerospace industries; however, its poor corrosion resistance and difficulty in deformation are limiting factors. Recently, Al/Mg/Al tri-layered clad sheets have been considered as a promising alternative to improve corrosion resistance and formability of magnesium alloys. The aim of this study was to evaluate the tensile properties and deformation behavior of Al/Mg/Al tri-layer clad sheets at different temperatures and strain rates. Yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and elongation were observed to increase with increasing strain rate. With increasing temperature from -40°C to 180°C, YS and UTS decreased and ductility increased. The strain hardening exponent evaluated via three equations of Hollomon, Swift, and Afrin et al. showed a similar increase with increasing strain rate and decreasing temperature. The fractographic analysis showed partial debonding of clad interface especially at higher strain rates and lower temperatures.

"The Red Lake Mine is situated in Balmer Township, Red Lake area in northwestern Ontario. It is an underground mine that has been in production since 1948. The property was originally known as the Dickensen Mine and was shut down in 1996.A feasibility study was carried out in 1998 and it was determined that a new mill should be constructed with a throughput rate of 600 stpd. The life-of-mine average gold grade was projected to be 1.35 oz/t with gold predominantly associated with arsenopyrite and pyrite. Metallurgical testwork indicated that the optimal flowsheet for gold recovery would include an autoclave for oxidation with a carbon circuit for adsorption. To limit capital cost and establish cashflow, the mill was constructed without an autoclave. The recovery by gravity and cyanidation was projected to be 83%. A flotation plant was constructed at the tail end of the circuit to recover the additional gold associated with sulphides from the leach circuit tailings. This material is being stockpiled onsite for future oxidation treatment.Detailed engineering was started in early 1999 and the first gold was poured in August 2000. One feature of the project was the use of Contact Lake equipment from Cameco’s Contact Lake project. The entire mill was purchased and equipment re-used where possible. The capital cost for the process facilities was C$3 1.5 million."

This belt is composed of an assemblage of poly-deformed volcanosedimentary supercrustal sequences intruded by pre and sin tectonic ultra mafic and mafic intrusions and sin to post tectonic granitoid.The principal gold bearing rock at the New Britannia Mine is made up of quartzcarbonate material in sequence of basic and acidic volcanic rocks contained within a shear zone. The ore itself is gold associated with the sulphide mineral arsenopyrite and contains some pyrite, pyrotite, plus chalcopyrite. Proven and probable reserves at December 31, 1997 were at 4.04 million tonnes at 4.6 g/t and underground exploration continues to confirm the extension of the ore zones to depth."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the applicability of the freeze-drying technique for preparing dispersion-strengthened tungsten powders suitable for conversion by powder metallurgy into materials which might have improved high-temperature strength. Extruded rods from compacts of tungsten-5 vol pct thoria had at 1,650° C a tensile strength of 30,300 psi and a 10-hour stress-rupture strength of 12,700 psi, These are slightly below those measured for swaged rods of commercial tungsten-3.7 vol pct thoria. Only those tungsten-thoria dispersions containing a stoichiometric deficiency of oxygen yielded a significant strengthening effect. A low-melting eutectic formed in extruded tungsten dispersions containing either zirconia or yttria, which caused a lowering of the tensile strengths. These tensile strengths were only slightly higher than strengths of elemental tungsten made from commercial powder having a particle size of 2.4 microns (Fisher subsieve). Sheet made from this commercial tungsten had a slightly higher tensile strength than tungsten made by freeze drying, but the freeze-dried tungsten sheet had a lower recrystallization temperature, a lower ductile-to-brittle transition temperature, and a higher purity.

A system capable of monitoring mine electrical power systems and detecting impending component failure could significantly improve power system safety and reduce unscheduled equipment downtime. Such monitoring would require a method of evaluating electrical parameters, calculated from terminal values, for indications of component deterioration. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has targeted electrical failure of squirrel cage induction motors and examined the use of mathematical models to aid in this evaluation. The initial stage of this work is complete, and has produced polynomial networks called adaptive learning networks (ALN's) that can detect and quantify winding insulation leakage simulated on laboratory motors. In this modeling process, empirical data from laboratory motors were used to select the electrical parameters most significant for assessing motor conditions, and mathematical expressions relating these parameters to simulated deterioration were formed. ALN's developed thus far can process readily measured motor terminal information and quantify power and current levels of laboratory-simulated leakage to within 1% and 3% of full load values, respectively, for motors in the 10- to 150-hp size range. The next stage of this research is validation of these ALN's for actual motor failures; this stage is currently underway, using accelerated life testing of laboratory motors.

The sulfide capacities a1 1500°C of slags in the systern CaO + CaF, +Al2O3 have been measured by bringing samples into equilibrium with gas mixtures made from CO + CO2 + SO, + N2. The capacities are negligzble both JOY CaF, and CaF, + Al2O3 melts but when lime is present even at 20 wt pct capacilies as high as 30 x lom3 can be obtained. The results have yielded information concerning the liquidus at 1500°C and fluoride-oxide melts in general. The slags used in electroslag refining contain substantial amounts of calcium fluoride. Robinson and Grainger' report that good results can be obtained by using slags of the approximate composition 70 wt pct CaF2 + 30 pct Al2O3. It has also been reported2 that a mixture of 50 pct CaF2 + 30 pct A12O3 + 20 pct CaO makes a good slag for general use. In view of the fact that very low sulfur contents are claimed for ingots produced by the electroslag process. studies have been made of the sulfide capacities [c, = wt pct S (PO2/Ps2)1/2 at 1500°C. of slags consisting of pure calcium fluoride, and of its mixtures with lime and/or alumina. These studies have also provided information on the phase diagrams. The slags were brought into equilibrium with gas mixtures prepared from NZ + CO + CO2 + SO2. Because CaFz is volatile and also easily hydrolyzed. measurements were made of its loss in weight in various flowing gas mixtures. EXPERIMENTAL Procedure. The apparatus and procedure were the same as described previously. Both platinum and iridium crucibles were used (height and inner diameter about 1 cm), but those made from iridium were stronger and able to withstand a greater number of experiments. In each experiment two crucibles were set in an alumina support and 1 g of slag mixture was divided between them. The materials from each crucible were analyzed separately after being brought to equilibrium with the gas, and then quenched in the water-cooled end of the reaction tube. Materials. Alumina and lime were prepared as de-scribed previously.4 Calcium fluoride was obtained by igniting Analar calcium fluoride in a platinum boat at about 800°C in a stream of pure dry nitrogen: the product was cooled in a desiccator. The slags were produced from mixtures of the powdered constituents, these being melted together in the course of each equilibrium experiment. The sulfur analyses and the X-ray diffraction meas- urements on the solidified slags were made as described previously.4 From the latter it appears that the CaF2 contained less than 0.5 mol pct CaO. RESULTS Values of (ps2/po2) for the Gas Mixtures. The re-sults have been represented in terms of (ps, /Po,)"? for the various gas mixtures used. "The Direct Chill (DC) casting process uses water to extract heat from molten aluminium and helps to control the solidification process. Many factors such as the water flowrate, water distribution around the mould and water impingement angle have significant impacts on the solidification process. It has been noted that the chemistry variation of the cooling water is also an important factor that has a major impact on the presence of defects on the ingot. A significant change in the water quality can produce defects on the ingots such as cracks, bleedouts, or runouts. Understanding the impact of water quality variation on ingots is therefore essential to ensure good ingot production and reduce defects. This paper aims at describing a new approach to follow the variations of process water quality over time. It is an original and innovative method, which is still under progress. A water quality and stability index (WQSI) is under development to evaluate changes in the water composition based on water physico-chemical parameters. The index is calculated by comparing each of the actual parameters with historical values previously modeled by a statistical law. It is a dimensionless number having an adjustable weight factor for each parameter. The positive or negative contribution of each parameter, with respect to the water cooling capacity, is taken into account to calculate the WQSI. The current selection of parameters is based on knowledge from the literature as well as on empirical experience. When the developed tool will be mature, it could be used to track water variations upon time and anticipate problems, enabling proactive actions to ensure good ingot production.INTRODUCTIONFor many years, the impact of water chemistry on heat transfer, during DC casting, has been of great interest in the aluminum industry. Several papers have been published to demonstrate the correlation between water chemistry and heat transfer (Yu, 1985), (Gildemeister, 2014). Although numerous studies do present the effects of water parameters (i. e. hardness, conductivity, oil, and grease…) on cooling capacity under controlled experimental conditions, they do not reflect the strong interactions between the parameters and variations present in a casting center. Wells and Cockcroft also demonstrated that laboratory based studies are not fully representative of real heat transfer in an industrial casthouse, there are too many factors involved (Wells, Li, & Cockcroft, 2001). In this context, it becomes very difficult to obtain a quantifiable relationship between the capacity of water to cool the ingot and ultimately the performance of the cast."

One phase of Bureau of Mines health and safety work is promotion of the use of safe and effective dust-collecting devices in connection with rock drilling in coal mines. To insure that adequate equipment of this type is available to the coal-mining industry, the Bureau of Mines conducts investigations and issues approvals for dust-collecting equipment that meets the requirements of a schedule established for testing dust collectors intended for use in connection with roof drilling for roof bolting and for other rock drilling. 6/ Performance tests are conducted under the provisions of this schedule by engineers of the Branch of Health Research. This circular describes briefly the requirements and procedure for approval and lists drill-dust collectors that have been granted approval as of January 31, 1956. The addresses of manufacturers of approved devices are listed alphabetically at the end of this circular.

In November 1999 Waihi Gold Mining Company commissioned its new crushing and conveying plant used to transport both ore and waste from the Martha Mine to its ore processing plant and also its tailings dam construction area. To date, a record monthly throughput of 854 000 tonnes throughput has been achieved. This paper outlines the measures taken subsequent to the commissioning of the system to achieve greater than design throughput and to mitigate the environmental and safety issues associated with operating the system in the middle of a town.

Mapping of exposed rock walls provides data on geological features such as joints, bedding planes, faults etc critical to the economics and the safety of mine operations. Traditional, manual methods of mapping can be time consuming, error prone and limited in their coverage. New methods have been developed to map exposed faces remotely and safely however the benefits of these methods are only fully realised when exposed structures can be quickly and easily mapped using automated methods. This paper describes the application of an automated method of analysis of 3D images that provides users with the capacity to map exposed structures automatically. The method is based on the use of vector classification methods used in some neural network systems and provides rapid and reliable identification of exposed planes. CSIRO Exploration and Mining is applying these methods to 3D images for a range of applications from pit mapping to machine automation.

Selection of a suitable coal or coals for the manufacture of coke of desired quality with due consideration of the purpose for which the coke is intended requires careful thought, and often it will pay to go to consider able expense in testing such coals as may be available. In general it will always be possible to obtain a satisfactory coal or blend of coals for the particular purpose in view, but in some places the cost of transportation would be prohibitive. It may then be necessary to consider a coal or coals inferior in grade, rank, or both. At times, in fact, only one inferior coal may be available, when the problem becomes mainly one of selecting equipment and operating conditions best adapted to that coal, keeping in mind that the end product of the plant must compete with the imported product in the market the plant will serve. This applies particularly to new projects for which it is necessary to build a plant and start with a clean slate, so to speak. However, it will pay every coke-plant manager to employ a force to continually test the coals used and the coke produced to make sure that the quality is not changing appreciably. Furthermore, if the supply of coals used becomes exhausted it will be necessary to use other coals. Continual testing is particularly necessary at plants using borderline coals or blends, where slight changes in the composition or in operation of the ovens may render them dangerously expanding. In this connection it should be stated that control in the newer coke plants is considerably easier than for those built a decade or so ago, consequently in the new ovens a given operating program can be maintained more precisely. This point is important, because one of the main requirements of the coke user is uniformity in both physical and chemical characteristics. For example, any appreciable changes in the quality of coke delivered to the blast?-furnace operator will involve changes in operation if the best results are to be obtained. Such changes are expensive usually they take considerable time and involve production of inferior iron.

In its efforts to reduce waste, and increase efficiencyin oil production, the Bureau of Mines is investigating methods of increasing the recovery from the underground sources of supply, which are the foundation of the petroleum industry and the many allied industries wholly or partly dependent on it. In the face of a demand that is increasing faster than the production and that, in the consensus of opinions of well-informed authorities, is soon likely to outstrip the productive capacity, it is well to consider whether it is not possible to extract more oil from the known sources of supply. It is universally acknowledged that by the usual production methods much oil is left underground, the general opinion being that at least 50 per cent of the oil in a field remains unrecovered when the field is abandoned as exhausted. From the writer's own investigations he believes the average recovery is even less, and if any considerable portion of this oil being left underground could he made available it would have a tremendously favorable influence on the petroleum industry and all the industries dependent on it. In this publication are considered the principles involved in increasing recovery and methods of extracting more oil from the oilbearing formations than by the usual ways of producing. These methods are: The use of gas or vacuum pumps, forcing compressed air or gas through the oil-bearing formations, displacing the oil by water, and better utilization of the natural pressures in the oilhearing formations. Especial attention is being given to a processcommonly known as the Smith-Dunn-for forcing compressed air through oil-bearing formations because it is believed to hold most promise for the future.

Social licence to operate is becoming part of a mining company’s DNA in the same way as health and safety. Consequently, mining companies are receiving increasing pressure from their shareholders to ensure that they add enduring value to the local communities in which they operate. Apart from the shareholders, a company has responsibility to suppliers, customers, employees, the government and the community, which means under the social responsibility model they must be accountable to the other stakeholders. External and internal challenges in mining are increasing the difficulty and complexity of mines to operate. The external mining environment has a big impact on mining operations and is driving matters such as the focus on safety, responsible mining and resource management, sustainability issues, profitability and productivity. Considering this, it is expected that the widespread implementation of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) related practices across the mining industry in the next ten years will increase, not just for the big players but for juniors as well. Companies, investors, governments and insurers who fail to act on ESG matters are to likely face greater risks. Demonstrating leadership in ESG will ultimately become a differentiating factor and market participants have much to gain from embracing ESG stewardship as part of their competitive advantage. Stock Exchanges have an important role to play in advancing sustainability in the capital markets. It is for this reason that the Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) initiative was founded to serve as a global platform for exploring how exchanges can enhance performance on ESG issues and encourage sustainable investment. The SSE initiative provides an effective platform for dialogue between the United Nations, stock exchanges, investors, companies and regulators in the mining industry. The paper will explain why ESG reporting is crucial for the survival of a mining company and how the lack of transparency could be detrimental to its public image and shareholder relations. The paper will also identify bodies that regulate ESG reporting, as well as the available tools that provide guidelines on reporting ESG matters. Key ESG reporting parameters (at a global scale) will also be highlighted.

Over the last forty years, a number of specific fluidized bed applications in nickel extraction have been developed for commercial use. Five important processes have gained particular acceptance, namely, sulphide ore roasting, nickel sulphide (matte) roasting, nickel oxide reduction, laterite ore pre-reduction, and nickel chloride pyrohydrolysis. These applications involve different feed materials and process conditions, however, all benefit from fast reaction kinetics and high heat and mass transfer rates in the fluidized bed reactors. They have been studied, tested, and implemented by various nickel producers, who have published their results in many papers and patents. This paper examines the design issues surrounding the application of fluidized bed technology to the above nickel processes. Based on the available data in the open literature, computerized process modelling is used to provide generic flowsheets that illustrate the key features of each process.

Off-grade molybdenite concentrates, mainly derived from secondary sources as by-products of the processing of copper, uranium and tungsten ores, do not satisfy the purity requirements (percent MoS2) for the production of molybdenum bearing products. This investigation is a continuation of a successful effort to refine a low-grade molybdenite concentrate to prepare a high-grade MoS2 using a mixed acid (HF + HCl) leach procedure. Specifically, this investigation is concerned with an understanding of the separation chemistry underlying the removal of the oxide/silicate gangue and the base-metal sulfide associations present in the low-grade molybdenite by their selective dissolution in the two acids. Experiments were conducted on an off-grade concentrate containing 42.6% Mo. Results of the controlled dissolution tests indicate that both HCl and HF are suitable for the removal of the associated alumina and both work well for iron, nickel and copper. However, HF was found to be the most effective for dissolving silica/silicate and magnesia. An attempt was made to rank the leaching efficiencies of the acids used singly, sequentially or in a mixed mode. Scale-up (300 to 2,000 g) experiments were conducted to validate this approach. Excellent purification of the concentrate was possible by processing the off-grade concentrate with 10% HCl plus 15% HF at 363 K for 7.2 ks in open polypropylene reactors with internal stirring. These conditions leached practically all of the oxide and silicate gangue and 96% of the metallic impurities. Starting from the low-grade molybdenite concentrate (42.6% Mo; 71.1% MoS2) it was found feasible to obtain a refined product containing 97.8% MoS2, which is suitable for industrial use.

For an industry that provides more than half of the nation’s energy needs, the U.S. coal industry still attracts negative publicity. However, the nation’s energy appetite continues to increase. And political leaders and the public are beginning to understand that alternative fuels will not be enough to keep up with that appetite. Does that mean the nation will now embrace the coal industry? No, according to speakers at the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute (RMCMI) meeting. The industry still needs to sell the public on coal’s advantages over other fuels. And the industry must continue to develop technology that will allow coal to meet and exceed strict clean air and clean water regulations.

Mining is one of the oldest industrial activities. Its products are essential to modern civilization. Paradoxically, and despite a deep-rooted belief to the contrary, mining is not a lucrative industry— at least not in the aggregate. This assertion is true not only for recent years, one of the weakest periods in terms of metal prices, but also for a long time past. In 1776,Adam Smith said in The Wealth of Nations: “Of all those expensive and uncertain projects, how-ever, which bring bankruptcy upon the greater part of the people who engage in them, there is none perhaps more perfectly ruinous than the search after ... mines. It is perhaps the most disadvantageous lottery in the world... Projects of mining, instead of replacing the capital employed in them, ... commonly absorb both capital and profits.”
