The recovery of copper and cobalt from ancient copper slags from the Küre region of Turkey was investigated. A fayalitic-type of ancient copper slag containing 1.24% Cu, 0.53% Co and 53.16% Fe were subjected to an experimental study. Two different routes were followed to recover the metal values. The first route was roasting the slag with pyrite followed by leaching. The second route was flotation of the slags, roasting of the flotation tailings with pyrite and leaching. The second route was found to be suitable for the treatment of the copper slag studied. In the flotation step, a copper concentrate containing approximately 11% Cu was produced with a 77% recovery while 93% of the cobalt stayed in the tailings. In the roasting experiments, the effects of roasting time, pyrite: slag ratio and roasting temperature on the dissolution efficiencies of Cu and Co were investigated, and the optimum conditions were determined. In the tests, 87% of the cobalt dissolution was observed after one hour of roasting at 500°C with a pyrite: slag ratio of 3:1. The copper dissolution in the tests was 31%. Based on the results of this study, a process flowsheet is proposed for the evaluation of these slags.

VAN Arkel 1 prepared ductile tantalum by the thermal decompoiition of tantalum pentachloride on a resistively heated wire (2000° C) in an evacuated bulb maintained at 100°C. Burgers and Basart2'3 observed the formation of a mixture of tantalum carbide and free metal when a carbon deposition base was used. campbel14 suggested the thermal decomposition of the iodide if a lower decomposition tem- perature was desired. To date, the details for preparing high-purity iodide tantalum have not been disclosed. EXPERIMENTAL The tantalum to be purified was symmetrically placed around the clear quartz deposition surface centrally located within a 64 mm cylindrical Vycor bulb. This Bureau of Mines laboratory research demonstrated that building bricks meeting ASTM specification C62-66 for grades SW and MW of FBS-type bricks can be produced from waste copper mill tailings. Waste tailings from accumulations at Magna, Utah, Anaconda, Mont., and Hayden, Miami, and San Manuel, Ariz., were dry-pressed into bricks, and the products were tested in accordance with ASTM Designation C67-66 on sampling, and testing of brick. An evaluation derived from pilot-plant production of similar brick at the Coal Research Bureau of West Virginia University indicated the production cost to be about $34 per 1,000 bricks. Utilization of such mill tailings on a commercial scale would eliminate the need for digging new pits for brick raw material production, conserve natural resources, and simultaneously remove potential sources of air pollution.

Background Three changes to the Constitution were proposed by the Council on 21 July 2006. These changes now have to be approved by means of a ballot at a Special General Meeting. Block caving is an underground mining method for the profitable extraction of massive, low-grade orebodies. Lately, it has become the mining method of choice, for many mining companies, because of depleted high-grade orebodies, and declining metal market prices. Block cave mining, however, still faces several challenges. Lack of access to the cave remains a major issue in understanding the rockmass response to mining for method optimisation. Improving our understanding of the rockmass response to caving will lead to safer and more productive operations. Combining large datasets from multiple sources with virtual reality scientific visualisation (VRSV) is a viable alternative to understanding complex cave behaviour without access to the cave. This is achieved using immersive environments with the ability to view complex multi-dimensional data (beyond 3D) graphically. VRSV offers a unique platform where it becomes possible to immerse the multi-disciplinary experts, and/or management team, in a virtual mine environment for quick decision making and fast resolution to conflicting conclusions. The underground mining system is complex due to multiple interrelating factors such as geology, excavation geometries, stress and time. Block caving is even more complex than most underground mining methods due to the network of tunnels required, and the use of induced stress, among others. As a consequence of the complexity in the block caving environment, it is vital that the mining system is analysed holistically, as a system, rather than optimizing individual factors one at a time. This paper presents a customised software module developed for use in the Advanced Visualisation Interactive Environment (AVIE) at The University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia, to enable VRSV investigation into block cave mining systems (BCMS). This approach has the potential to provide a better understanding of the effect of time in in rock engineering, which has proven to be an important factor in hard rock mines (Ma & Daemen, 2006; Malan et al., 1997; Suorineni, 2010) but never validated. This work back analyses the early undercutting phase of a case study block caving operation with the view to understanding time/sequence effects. There is evidence that heterogeneous rockmass time-dependent behaviour governs the seismic response of the rockmass following undercut developments.

Underground blasting in permanently frozen gravel was studied in a 7-by 12-ft drift by running a nonreplicated 2 X 2 X 2 factorial experiment on the effects of type of cut, delay, and explosive on the fragmentation subsystem. Comparisons were made between a V-cut round and a burn-cut round, millisecond delays and half-second delays, and 40 percent special gelatin and 60 percent high-density ammonia dynamite. The number of large blocks in the muck pile) loading time, shuttle car operating time lost because of cleanup needs, length of advance per round, and length of muck pile were recorded and statistically analyzed. None of the blast parameters had a significant effect on the length of advance or length of muck pile, although the half-second delays tended to give a shorter muck pile than millisecond delays. The burn cut required less secondary breakage, less loading and cleanup time, and gave better overall fragmentation than the V-cut. The ammonia dynamite shots required less secondary breakage and less loading time than those using special gelatin. The half-second delays gave better overall fragmentation and required less cleanup time, but the millisecond delays gave a better loading rate. None of the differences between delays and explosives were notably significant.

Instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas have occurred at various times in several working districts of Metropolitan Colliery, N.S.W.They have occurred in headings only, under both hand and mechanised conditions, and with seam gas ranging from mainly methane to nearly pure carbon dioxide. A modification of inducer shotfiring using a shear cut was introduced in 1955, and in 1961 full face firing both to a machine cut shear and off the solid was introduced. The current series of outbursts -1961 to 1963 - has been induced under these systems with full control of the time of outburst, but without prediction, and with some disappointing production features.Various aspects of current conditions and practices at Metropolitan are considered singular, such as the coarse granulometry of outburst coal, the prevalence of floor heave, the absence of strong structures at outburst sites, the possibility of outburst at any stage in pillar formation up to the last few yards, the effect of rate of advance on outburst occurrence, and the mildness of many outbursts experienced.It is concluded that inducer shotfiring is a reliable control but it suffers by comparison with outburst-free conditions, and that control by preyention would be preferable.INTRODUCTIONThe phenomenon of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas has been described in detail previously (Hargraves, 1958). Briefly, it is a combined gas and stress hazard of deep coal mining, usually occurring in virgin work and during active face advance, when coal and seam gas burst from the face into the workings.Instantaneous outbursts have occurred sporadically at Metropolitan Colliery, N.S.W., since 1895. In sampling a process stream, conventional sampling theory deals only with the variation of the analyte content and neglects the impact of the variation in the mass flow on the sampling variance, whether the sampling regime is time-based or mass-based. This is an obvious simplification of the real state of affairs and it is worthwhile to study this impact via simulation.With a facility to simulate large (long) random functions having some thousands of points in the function and the ability to impose covariance functions on the mass flow and analyte variations, such a study is possible. It is also possible to evaluate the impact of correlation between analyte content and mass flows.This paper describes a limited study of the variance increase due to mass flow fluctuations over the usual sampling variance due to analyte variation during the sampling period. The bias in the sampling result is determined for specific modes of correlation. Simulation methods are used as they are the only means by which a sampling result can be compared to the true assay for the lot; in the physical circumstances of mineral process analysis, it is never possible to determine the true process stream assay.CITATION:Lyman, G J, 2017. A quality culture was instilled into the workforce prior to commissioning which ultimately led to AS3902 qualification in 1992. Simcoa has continued its quality drive through the formation of 'Simcoa's Quality Leadership Process' which is planned to make Simcoa the best silicon producer in the world.

Following a successful investigation on the Central Zone sample, a cyanidation study was conducted on an ore sample from the AD-MW Zone of Clarence Stream Property, owned by Freewest Resources Canada, to develop a leaching strategy to extract gold. At a grade of 6.48 g/t, gold is present in the forms of aurostibite, free gold and electrum. The ore contains 4.3% berthierite/gudmundite, 1.3% pyrrhotite, 0.7% pyrite, 0.07% stibnite and 0.9% arsenopyrite. Similar to the Central Zone, the extraction of gold from the AD-MW Zone can be performed at atmospheric pressure, pH 10.5 and with a low concentration of cyanide. The grind size had no effect on gold extraction between a P80 of 28 to 71 µm. The oxygen and cyanide requirement significantly increased with a ?ner grind. Consequently, a very close control of cyanide addition is required to minimize passivation of gold. Lead nitrate, added in the pretreatment, increased the extraction of gold by 2.3%. Leaching at pH < 10 improved gold extraction but increased the cyanide consumption by 5%. Passivation of gold occurred when the pretreatment was longer than 2 hours. A longer pretreatment reduced the cyanide consumption by 5%. Mineralogical characterization of the leach residue with no gravity pretreatment prior to leaching indicated the presence of unleached gold grains and passivated gold grains. Removal of coarse gold by gravity increased the extraction by 2.8% (leach residue at 0.74 g/t Au). Increasing the DO to 16 ppm or the lead nitrate from 500 to 1,000 g/t increased the overall gold extraction to 90.4% (leach residue at 0.62 g/t), which is the maximum gold extraction obtained. The leaching parameters were 800 ppm NaCN, DO 16 ppm and pH 10.5 for a duration of 120 hours. The associated cyanide consumption was 4.0 kg/t. Gold leaching was not sensitive to cyanide concentration. Reducing the cyanide concentration to 250 ppm resulted in a gold extraction of 89.5% with a cyanide consumption of 2.6 kg/t.

An elongate belt containing granodiorite stocks with associated stockwork molybdenum mineralisation in west Nelson is correlated with the I-type Separation Point Suite of mid Cretaceous age. Trace element characteristics of the &apos;Mo-granites&apos;, and the Separation Point Batholith strongly suggest a primitive, subcrustal origin for these granitoids, by partial melting of oceanic basaltic crust or upper mantle material in a subduction zone. They were emplaced in the upper crust without undergoing significant differentiation or contamination by sialic crust. Molybdenum, which is at levels of approximately 5 ppm in unaltered granite, is not significantly reduced in altered (but unmineralised) granite. This suggests the metallisation has a magmatic, subcrustal source and is not derived by hydrothermal leaching of upper crustal rocks or the granitic host rocks. Geochemistry of the &apos;Mo-granite&apos; belt, in particular low K2O, calc-alkali to calcic Peacock Index, high Sr and TiO2, and low Rb, Nb and F, suggest classification as calcic granitoids similar to those which host porphyry copper deposits, indicating grades of mineralisation are likely to be low.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting a series of investigations with the common aim of minimizing the losses that occur in the mining and treatment of mineral substances. The results of the investi- gations are being published in reports of the bureau. This report treats of a method of preventing some of the waste of the natural gas incidental to oil mining. This method, the condensation of gasoline from natural gas, offers to the oil operator and others a profitable means of utilizing some of the oil-well gas now being wasted. The most desired constituent of crude oil is obtained, the production of oil is not hindered, and the gas, after the extraction of gasoline, can be returned to the leased area to drive pumps or into pipe lines for uses to which natural gas is ordinarily put, usually with its fuel value lessened only in slight degree. Publications already issued briefly discuss the subject. In this report the work is treated in greater detail, and the results of many additional tests are shown.

The following minerals found in the residual black sands from gold mining in El Bagre Antioquia (Colombia) were identified as having major economic interest: Ilmenite (FeTiO3), with an average of 49% of TiO2, frequently altered presenting crowns; lamellaes of rutile and alteration textures; titanomagnetite with up to 25% of TiO2; magnetite (Fe3O4) in individual grains or associated with others minerals as hematite and ferromagnesian silicates rutile (TiO2) with considerable quantities of Nb2O5(0.1-3.7%Wt); zircon (ZrSiO4) with 66%Wt of ZrO2 and monazite with an average of 63.43%Wt of REE, this frequently associated to xenotime and thorite forming textures as little drops. Analysis in EPMA and SEM/EDS showed percentages of minor elements and traces, thereby clearly establishing the applications of these minerals in diverse industries. Furthermore, a detailed granumetric study of the different minerals and textural relationships among them also allowed for establishing the basis for possible processing and exploitation.

The primary function of a support slurry is to provide stability during excavation. Today foundation structures can be designed around the additional friction afforded by the absence of the filter cake attributable to the use of polymeric fluids as support slurries. These fluids use pseudoplastic fluid viscosity to advantage over the fragile thixotropic gel structures of bentonite. Many of today&apos;s polymeric fluids are environmentally acceptable for disposal directly to municipal sewers.

As part of the Bureau of Mines titanium resources examination program, samples of altered rock (saprolite) and unaltered rock from the Roseland anorthosite near Roseland, Nelson County, Va., were tested for amenability to beneficiation by flotation. A flotation technique was developed to produce bulk concentrates of ilmenite, rutile, sphene, and leucoxene. It was necessary to first float apatite using oleic acid as the collector, in an alkaline pulp with dextrine as a titanium mineral depressant. The titanium minerals could then be floated from the apatite tailing, using fluosilicic acid to depress the remaining apatite, morin to depress ferromagnesian minerals (when present), and oleic acid as the collector. A bulk titanium mineral concentrate, analyzing 66.0 percent Ti02 and 0.08 percent P205, was obtained from a sample of the unaltered rock which contained 5.45 percent TiO2 and 2.81 percent P205. Overall recovery in the concentrate was 47.1 percent of the total TiO2 in the ore. About 55 to 65 percent of the saprolite sample was clay and was removed by attrition scrubbing and decantation. The apatite prefloat procedure was applied to the saprolite sands; subsequent titanium mine: 1 flotation recovered 72.2 percent of the Ti02 in a bulk concentrate containing 65.1 percent TiO2 and 0.20 percent P205.

"An AG/SAG mill was commissioned at the Brunswick mine concentrator in October 1998. This paper discusses the original shell top hat liner design for the bi-directional AG/SAG mill, observed liner wear, subsequent liner design modifications, and benefits.The original liners were chrome-moly steel Norsteel with rubber grates and rubber-lined pulp lifters. The design was based on experiences of other AG/SAG mills and recommendations by the liner supplier, Norcast. Liner design modifications were made in an iterative fashion after observing the wear rate profile of the liners; over ten liner sets were implemented. Shell liner design improvements were supported by a design of experiments approach in conjunction with discrete element method (DEM) charge motion simulations. Design optimization took into account lining costs and impacts on operating performance. The team approach to the liner design improvements process is described with emphasis on the application of the design of experiments. The liner wear history and mill operating performance are presented."

"In the mining industry, rock excavation is the first phase of the comminution process. Downstreamoperations such as secondary breaking, crushing and milling terminate the process, reducing the size of the grains down to the desired particle distribution. In such a cascade process, every process upstream heavily influences all the downstream operations. When rock excavation is carried out by drilling and blasting, a very economic source of energy (the explosive) is used at the utmost upstream; a more expensive source of energy (electricity) is employed for all the downstream phases. This means that managing the correct employ of the explosive energy is a form of managing the whole process, controlling the operational costs and therefore the profitability of the whole business. We simulated this cascade behavior, using as a starting point the experimental data obtained from small-scale block blasting, evaluating the influence of blasting on the grindability of the blasted material. This study showed the reduction in visible (particle size) and invisible fracturing (micro-cracking, resulting in a reduction of the Work Index WI). The particle size distribution for full-scale blasts was estimated by means of algorithm simulation, then we simulated the behavior of the comminution plant fed with the material possessing the characteristics previously estimated. All the costs (drilling, blasting, electric energy for the engines of the crushers and mill) were calculated and charted. The results show a clear curve that allows to estimate the minimum operating expenditure (OPEX) for the whole mine+plant framework. Being the WI dependent on the output on the blast, one can manage the performance and the expenditure of the whole comminution process by adjusting drilling and blasting parameters For any given mine, it is possible to perform a simulation and encounter the minimum OPEX scenario for the comminution process and managerial choices can be oriented accordingly. In a cascade productive chain as mining is, responsible strategic choices must be taken looking at the entire production framework. Compartmentalized managerial staff and budgets for separated production areas are not acceptable anymore. Somehow higher costs upstream can lead to effective decrease in costs and increase in efficiency and productivity of the processes downstream."

This report describes a computer-based model for estimating the tangible costs of injuries and deaths from work-related accidents in underground coal mines. The study undertook to identify and quantify the elements of accident costs, including field visits to coal mines, insurance carriers, and public agencies. The mathematical models developed for each tangible element of accident cost are presented in Volume I of the report. A listing of the computer programs which comprise the model and instructions for using the programs are presented in Volume II. Statistical distributions of mining family characteristics, data on 95 miners killed in underground accidents, and other basic data used to develop the model are presented in Volume III. Application of the model to a data base of 9,286 accidents which occured in underground bituminous coal mines during 1974 yielded a total of $56,900,000 in tangible costs to industry, mining families, and public agencies. Loss of income to the families of miners injured or killed in these accidents accounted for 47 percent of the total.

An intensive investigation into modern roof support technology, including hy draulic and control systems, has been carried out against the perspective of global development and support behaviour on longwall faces across the Indian sub-continent. The wide ranging study examined various types and designs of modern supports used in seams of varying thickness and inclination where caving and stowing were practised. Consideration has been given to structural analysis, support resistance, the various forces acting over and on the powered supports and to support compatibility. The examination of the phy sical parameters has been allied to field experience and, together, have led to the formulation of standard designs for both the powered support structure and structural systems. A realistic mathematical model has been formulated for calculating the capacity of roof support requirements resulting from the actual behaviour of the immediate roof stratum. As a result of the work, it should be possible to readily select the most appropriate type of support sy stem for the conditions and longwall mining method that is to be employed.

Hercules cribs make use of timber loaded parallel and perpendicular to the grain. Maximum use is made of the orthotropic properties of timber resulting in crib- having superior strength, high initial stiffness and controlled post yield deformations. Blocks and timbers can be combined in many different ways resulting in thousands of different geometries. Each geometry has a specific combination of block on block, timber on timber and block on timber contact area which results in a unique performance. Each crib can be fingerprinted by defining four parameters relating to its load/deformation curve. If the geometry is known, the performance can be predicted with a high degree of accuracy. If the mine support requirements are known, the crib geometries can be designed which met theme requirements in the most cost effective manner Hercules cribs come closest to satisfying mine support requirements. Due to the flexibility of the concept and their superior strength, they can be employed in most mining situations to enhance safety, improve productivity, reduce working costs or improve profitability.
