This report describes the design and implementation of UHF radio and closed-circuit television systems in the Black River room and pillar limestone mine near Butler, Pendleton County, Kentucky. Prior to designing the radio system, measurements of signal attenuation on 812 and 466 mHz were made in the slope tunnel and in the straight and level crosscuts in the mine. Two distributed antenna systems fed by two sets of base stations provide approximately 75o coverage of the mine. Passive reflectors are used for extending signals into intersecting crosscuts and two-way signal boosters will be used to extend signals to the perimeter and obstructed areas of the mine. Fourteen mine vehicles were equipped with mobile radios equipped with digital identification, alarm and status encoders. Fifteen portable transceivers also were used. Six closed-circuit television cameras provide surveillance of critical transfer points of the belt conveyor system, and the loading dock at the base of the slope and an ash disposal area in the mine. Two-way radio communication and closed-circuit television have saved considerable man. hours, increased production, reduced maintenance costs and enhanced safety. Innovative developments were the use of passive reflectors and two-way signal boosters for extending signals into intersecting crosscuts, development of lightweight signal margin measuring equipment, modifications of mobile digital encoders to automatically send status information from mine vehicles such as numbers of loads of ore delivered, hot engine, etc., and the use of CATV technology for multiplexing audio, digital and video signals onto coaxial cables from the surface to the mine.

To determine the retorting characteristics of a column of mine-run, ungraded oil shale ranging in size from fines to 5-ton pieces, a 150-ton batch-type retort was designed and constructed at the Bureau of Mines Laramie Energy Research Center, Laramie, Wyo. The retort vessel is 45 feet high by 11 ½ feet inside diameter, and is supported in a 95-foot-high steel superstructure. Mine-run shale from the Bureau of Mines facility near Rifle, Colo., assaying about 25 gallons of oil per ton, was used as the test shale. To date, 11 runs have been completed, and the results of the last 10 of these are reported. The effects of oxygen content of the retorting gas and the superficial gas velocity of the retorting gas on oil recovery from a column of mine-run oil shale were studied. In one run, the average particle size of the shale was substantially increased to determine its effect on oil yield. Oil recoveries ranged from a low of 39.3 to a high of 65.8 volume-percent of Fischer assay.

Silicon solar cells, that convert the energy of sunlight into electric energy, are attractive sources of energy. In the production line wafers of solar cells are sliced from a multicrystaline ingot solidified unidirectionally. Recycling scrap from top and sides of such ingots is addressed. SiC and Si3N4 inclusions are a major problem. Scrap from Scan Wafer ASA is melted in a high vacuum furnace at around 1500ºC. The filters, from commercial producers, are C and SiC with 10, 20 and 30 ppi. Characterisation of inclusions before and after filtration, and in the filter itself, is performed by microscopy. Dissolution of silicon in acid and counting of the un-dissolved inclusions is also carried out. In the filter Si3N4 needles and SiC inclusions were identified. The amount of these inclusions in the filtered silicon is much less than in the input. In conclusion, filtration using SiC and C filters in vacuum system in argon atmosphere removes SiC and Si3N4 inclusions from solar cell scrap. Flow of metal through the filters is not a problem. These results are promising with scale-up to industrial application in mind.

Placer Domes? Campbell Mine, situated in northwestern Ontario, is undergoing an assessment of the efficiency of the operation which is necessitated by the low gold price and a reducing ore reserve grade. A decision has recently been taken to move away from a functional based departmental structure (underground, engineering, geology, etc.) towards a team-based system where crews, engineers, geologists and supervisors are responsible for the planning and operation of a particular area of the mine. The objective is to improve communication and understanding of the goals and achievements and to ensure a forum is available for the generation of ideas. It is intended to increase the accountability and decision-making ability of the teams in an effort to achieve the mines? safety and production targets. This paper presents a critical review of the progress of this organisational change process and its successes and failures at the time of writing.

The phosphate fertilizer industry is at present based mainly on the use of sulfuric acid. This technology results in the generation of large amounts of radioactive gypsum that represents disposal and environmental problems. Also it involves the use of expensive reactors for acidification that necessitates the frequent replacing the damaged agitators. Applying hydrometallurgical techniques such as in-situ, heap, or vat leaching to phosphate processing could solve these problems. In this case, however, nitric acid must be used and dicalcium phosphate (40% P2O5) may be obtained as a final product. It is insoluble in water but soluble in citric acid and is an excellent fertilizer. This technology does not interfere with uranium recovery if desired. In addition it permits the recovery of rare earths which are otherwise lost in the gypsum.

To aid industry and Government in planning water developments the Bureau of Mines in 1963 canvassed mineral producers to determine water use in 1962. Water use by the mineral industry comprises only 2 percent of the water withdrawn by industry as a whole. The major water-using mineral industries are natural gas processing, phosphate rock, sand and gravel, and iron ore. Analysis indicated the following conclusions: 1. Total water use and new water intake is dependent on the quantity of material processed and the process water requirements of the particular industry or commodity. 2. Recirculation is dependent on the processing requirements of a particular commodity, the manner in which the water is used, cooling and condensing requirements in certain large industries, the quality of new water intake, and the need to treat new and discharged water. 3. Consumed water is dependent on the quantity of water recirculated, the temperature and humidity in the area, and the proportion of water used for cooling and condensing. 4. A threefold increase in water use by the mineral industry by 1985 is forecast

This report is one of a series covering the mineral resources of the Nation. It briefly describes most of the known tungsten deposits in Gila, Yavapai, and Mohave Counties, Ariz. Many of the descriptions are taken from the reports of previous examinations by Bureau of Mines engineers, and from Defense Minerals Exploration Administration files. Where a previous examination had been made, and an inquiry disclosed that little or no work had been done since that time, pertinent information from the report was used in this paper with acknowledgment of the source. However, the majority of the descriptions is from field examinations by the author. In the past 3 years (July 1956-May 1959) only necessary annual assessment work was conducted on nearly all the properties described in this paper. There was no active mining on any of the properties examined.

A water/air model was developed to simulate the refining of molten aluminium by the sparging of gas through an impeller. The optimal gas dispersion depends upon selecting the correct gas rate for a given impeller rotational velocity to prevent flooding or channelling. Correlations illustrating this flooding behaviour exist for standard impellers within standard tank geometries. However the validity of these correlations has not been substantiated for gas dispersion in high temperature molten metals with non-standard tank and impeller dimensions. Metal refining is most efficient when fine bubbles are generated and uniformly distributed within the treatment tank. The application of some measuring technique able to detect this distribution within a non transparent operating treatment tank would be invaluable, enabling the optimisation of gas flow and impeller speed.   A technique has been developed to measure the pressure fluctuation levels at specific points in the water model. Comparison of these pressure fluctuation data with photographic evidence obtained in the water model suggests that the flow regime in the metal treatment unit may be determined using this technique.

This study analyzes the safety, technology, and economic impact of eliminating safety fuse from metal/nonmetal mines, based on operation and manufacturer experience over the past five to ten years. If safety fuse is eliminated, blasting accidents will decrease with no technical impact except for some limited, specific applications. The economic impact will be minor for large operations, but will be significant enough for small operations that some small operations will likely close rather than change. The majority of the mines would probably change over, with the extra cost absorbed by the market. Elimination of safety fuse would have obvious impact on the two manufacturers of safety fuse; one manufacturer already produces an alternative system, and will remain unaffected; the other will be affected if they do not change their production strategy. There will be a very minor effect on the mining industry as a whole due to abolishment of safety fuse from the standpoint of employment or production.

High resolution seismic refraction tomography has proved to be a useful tool to effectively estimate depth of blast induced damage in a mine face. Excavation blast damage can be as shallow as 1 to 2m and requires resolution at a fraction of a meter for effective imaging. We used an accelerometer with flat frequency response to 1000Hz to record data at spacings of approximately 0.25 to 0.5m along mine walls. First arrival times from the seismic data were used to produce P-wave velocity tomograms. The tomograms show transition from low velocity zones to velocity associated with competent rock. We interpret the low velocity zones to indicate residual fracturing from blasting. Experiments on a concrete test block and at two underground mine locations give results that are consistent with fractured rock transitioning to competent rock. Our method can be applied efficiently in an underground environment to provide continuous velocity information with depth into a mine wall over a span of approximately 10m.

This specification, along with the drawings, encompasses all designs, materials, products, accessories, tools, equipment, services, transportation, labor and supervision, installation techniques, and testing procedures required for the installation of soil nail excavation support or earth retention systems. This is a Guide Specification designed to assist in the development of project specifications for soil nail excavation support and earth retention systems. This Model Specification is based on generally accepted industry standards but may require modification by the specification writer to accommodate unusual and/or unforeseen site and subsurface conditions and the particular circumstances of the project. Care must be taken to avoid internal inconsistencies. It contains language allowing for a Contractor-Designed Soil Nail Wall, which would be removed if the design is provided by the Owner (e.g. See Sections 1.2 and 4.1).

Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) has re-emerged as a major concern in the Australian coal mining industry. Harmful effects from coal dust inhalation have been well documented, but the underlying causes and mechanisms of CWP are still debatable. Research conducted in the USA has proposed a plausible link between the presence of pyrite in coal and the prevalence of CWP. Reactive pyrite in coal oxidises under ambient mine conditions to produce various iron sulfate minerals such as melanterite, rozenite, roemerite and szomolnokite. Rapid reaction rates are promoted by the form (size and morphology) of the reactive pyrite present, which provides both increased surface area and increased porosity for easy air access to reaction sites. The products formed from reactive pyrite oxidation are often needle-like crystals with thicknesses in the order of 1–2 µm (eg melanterite and rozenite) and prismatic crystals with thicknesses less than 5 µm (eg roemerite) have been recorded. The densities of these minerals are significantly less than quartz, which makes them prone to becoming airborne with the normal coal dust. In fact, the mix of these mineral salts is commonly referred to as ‘fairy dust’ by mine workers due to the way they can become entrained and sparkle in the mine ventilation air, particularly if they occur in the upper part of a seam that is forming a coal roof. Examples are presented of the various products of reactive pyrite oxidation found in three Australian coal samples, which provide evidence of the physical and chemical mechanisms that would support the USA findings, particularly in terms of a source of bioavailable iron leading to increased inflammatory stress response.CITATION:Beamish, B B, Ward, C R and Chalmers, D, 2017. A major manufacturer and user of machine tools had the need to install a screw press machine at its plant site with the following design load requirements: (1) Vertical Compression Live Load = 2000 kip (8896 kN) and Dead Load = 1000 kip (4448 kN), (2) Rotational Moment = 6600 ft-kip (8950 kN'm). The screw press machine was to be located within an existing manufacturing building. The bottom of the footing base was located 15 ft (4.6 m) below existing floor slab. A geotechnical investigation of the site indicated a 17 ft (5.2 m) thick initial stratum of stiff to very stiff clay underlain by a 14 ft (4.3 m) thick stratum of loose to medium dense sand. Beneath the sand stratum was soft rock described as weathered shale. Obvious concern was raised on the possible effects of the dynamic motion of the screw press and potential resulting settlement within the loose sand stratum. This combination of large loads and dynamic motion resulted in the selection of a helical pile and tieback system to support the concrete foundation. The helical pile foundation system consisted of a group of vertical helical piles installed into the shale rock and a group of inclined helical tiebacks set into the remaining portion of the clay stratum. Four load tests were conducted on the vertical helical piles in order to establish compression load capacity. The results of these load tests as reported herein, led to the addition of a limited number of tubular steel push piles in order to meet the project required Factor of Safety on the design loads. All of the helical piles, push piles and inclined helical tiebacks were successfully installed and the screw press is now installed and operational.

"Gowest Gold Ltd. is in the process of developing the Frankfield East gold deposit located along the largely undeveloped Pipestone fault northeast of Timmins, Ontario. In addition to resource development and environmental permitting work the company has had an ongoing program of metallurgical and engineering studies aimed at evaluating options for processing the Frankfield East ore. Mineralization at the Frankfield project contains arsenopyrite and pyrite as the major sulphide minerals. Bulk flotation of all sulphides results in extremely high gold recovery. However, the gold is almost entirely associated with the arsenopyrite fraction of the ore and is refractory in nature requiring preoxidation treatment. Selective flotation was investigated to recover a gold-arsenopyrite concentrate thereby reducing the mass which would be subjected to further gold processing. As part of this work, a pyrite concentrate low in arsenic content was also recovered that would be suitable as a source of sulphur for a smelter (or other pyrometallurgical facility). Production of separate arsenopyrite and pyrite concentrates is frequently examined but rarely adopted due to the distribution of gold between the two products or the inability to achieve adequate separation. Several flowsheet options were investigated in the study. The best results were achieved following a sequential flotation flowsheet. The flowsheet configuration was key to meeting the targets for the two products. In this paper, the various options investigated are reviewed and the results of the final flowsheet are presented. The overall plan by Gowest was to evaluate all process options to bring the Frankfield East deposit into production. The ability to effectively separate the arsenopyrite and pyrite components in the ore provides Gowest with added opportunities to pursue both short and long term production scenarios."

"The CANMET SPOC project aims at inducing progress in process evaluation and optimization by developing user oriented software based on state-of-the-art theory. The present work is the result of a joint effort by CANMET, Noranda Mines and Université Laval to develop two computer packages: one (RTD) to calculate the residence time distribution that best describes the material transport through the mill, the other (FINDBS) to estimate the rate of breakage and distribution function of the population balance model in a ball mill. The RTD package can handle data from various experimental methods (impulse or complex tracer feed, with or without recycling, etc...). The FINDBS package provides options for the functional description oj both model parameters Band S. The full detail of the methods and programs appears in a users guide. The program capabilities and several sample runs are presented.IntroductionSimulation of mineral dressing operations by computer has been largely contained within academic and research circles and has not yet gained a status of routine practice in the ore and coal industries. It is however a matter of time before process simulators are available on every process engineer's desk to assist process optimization tasks, flowsheet design and professional training. The CANMET SPOC project (Simulated Processing of Ore and Coal) was initiated in 1980 to assist the Canadian industry in integrating computer-based methodology for process evaluation and optimization(1). Software development, documentation and transfer is one of the main priorities of the project which will mature in 1985 by releasing a complete package of manuals and programs covering sampling, material balance computation, unit modelling, flowsheet simulation and optimization . This paper is a condensed description of a typical project element in its 1982-1983 state of development. The required methodology for ball-mill modelling and simulation was consolidated an d merged to other project elements during a joint study under contract financed by CANMET and Noranda Mines Ltd . The first part of the study dealt with documenting experimental methods and software for ball-mill computer simulation. Université Laval GRAAIM (Goupe de Recherche en Automatistion Appliquée à l'Industrie Minérale) acted as sub-contractor for this part of the study(16,17). A second part dealt with applying the model calibration techniques to a large industrial data base and is reported elsewhere(2,18,19)."

Piling work for modification to the Charles Grimes Bridge in Melbourne, Australia required piles to be installed through 15 to 20 m thickness of very soft to soft silty clay overlying 10 m of stiff clays and sands in turn overlying siltstone. The presence of an old sewer founded at depth in the soft clays demanded that vibrations be kept to a minimum. Two pile type were used by Vibro-pile (Australia) to provide the client with the most economical piling price. The two pile types were CFA piles of 750mm diameter founded in the weathered rock and a full displacement concrete injected screw pile developed by Vibro-pile called the "Z" pile, founded on the rock. The development and features of the "Z" pile are briefly discussed, including the perceived applications and advantages of the pile type. On board instrumentation comprising a computer was used to monitor all aspects of the construction. The rig instrumentation provided an important quality control measure that gave confidence in the pile installed. Pile performance was proved on the cast in situ piles by dynamic load testing methods. Initially tests performed with a 120 kN drop hammer, which was not capable of mobilising the required loads. The performance was then satisfactorily proved by using a drop hammer of 20 tonne mass delivering blows drop heights of 1.5m. Low strain integrity tests on a number of piles were also used to confirm the structural integrity of the piles.

One area of study for the Coal Mine Injury Analysis project was to illustrate how loss control can be used as a foundation for mine safety training. After an initial review of the principles of loss control, the instruments often used for worker/worksite appraisal, such as incident reporting, analysis, and investigation, workplace observation, worksite inspection, and safety audits and checklists were evaluated for their effectiveness. The findings were then applied to the continuous-miner worksite at several mines to modify the techniques for use in a highly dynamic man/machine work environment. Before the information gathered from the review of the various continuous-miner worksites was presented at the annual retraining sessions at five mines, a trainability analysis procedure was developed to separate training shortcomings from those problems resulting from improper equipment design or unsatisfactory working environments. Also, several microcomputer-based training programs were developed to aid in conveying the loss-control concepts to the trainees. Finally, the results from the implementation and evaluation of the loss-control-based training programs were documented, including the complete training script for one of the case-study mines. The procedures outlined in this study will aid mine training specialists in developing focused, pro-active accident-prevention strategies and training programs that are based on sound loss-control principles.

GEOLOGISTS who are acquainted with the mines of northeastern Mexico realize that the most important lead-silver replacement deposits of the province are confined to a single formation. But since the formation is several hundred meters thick, the author has determined the relative position of the lead mantos in the belief that this information will prove useful in the search for new mines. This article describes the stratigraphic location of lead-silver replacement deposits known in several mines situated in a region comprising part of the states of Coahuila and Nuevo Leon. The area studied extends for 200 km* (125 miles) from east to west and 70 km (45 miles) north to south. Metallogenic Province: The most important metallic deposits of the region have the following common characteristics: 1) The orebodies occur as manto replacements of calcareous sediments. 2) The horizons that have contributed large tonnages of ore are in similar positions in the corresponding stratigraphic columns (as it will be shown later on). 3) Lead is the most important metal in the ores. Silver is commonly present in small amounts. Occurrence of zinc is dependent on the degree of oxidation of the primary sulfides. 4) A large proportion of the total production has been in the form of oxidized ores. 5) The deposits are located on anticlines. Rocks of Cretaceous age crop out over large areas of the states of Nuevo Leon and Coahuila. forming part of a belt that extends to the south along the eastern Sierra Madre. The sediments are cut by a small number of intrusive stocks ranging in characteristics from rhyolite to diorite. The most prominent structural feature of the region is a series of folds trending northwest-southeast. Faulting is not conspicuous in the region, although a major fault zone is found farther East.' The physiography closely reflects structural features, with mountains formed by anticlines and valleys conforming with intermediate synclines. Narrow valleys have also been developed along the axes of many anticlines, where solution of limy sedi- ments and erosion have proceeded along axial tension fractures. Stratigraphy: Rocks of the Upper Cretaceous are exposed in only a small percentage of the total area. Generally they have been eroded away from the mountains and are covered by recent talus and alluvium in the valleys. Humphrey' has published an excellent paper describing the Cretaceous formations of the Sierra de los Muertos, a short distance west of Monterrey. A brief summary of these formations is given below to convey an overall picture of the stratigraphic sequence that prevails just south of the area under consideration. Anthracite was used extensively as a fuel in iron metallurgy from 1840 to 1880. In 1874, 226 of the 680 blast furnaces in the United States were operating on anthracite and producing almost one-half of the Nation's pig iron. However, by 1890, railroad expansion, the development of western iron-ore reserves, and the growing use of coke decreased the importance of anthracite as a metallurgical fuel. As a result, the last blast furnace designed exclusively for anthracite use was built in 1891. Because of the increased energy requirements of our expanding national economy, the abnormally high demands during national emergencies, and the proximity of anthracite deposits to eastern steel-producing areas, interest has grown in again using anthracite in iron metallurgy. Estimates of anthracite reserves indicate a 300-yr. supply at a production rate of 30 million tons per year. These large reserves dictate the development of an adequate technology for the use of anthracite by the metallurgical industry.
