From 1984 through 1987, the Bureau of Mines investigated numerous prospects and new discoveries of columbium, rare-earth elements (REE), uranium, zirconium, and other metals associated with the multi-phased peralkaline granite at Bokan Mountain, southeastern Alaska. This report summarizes the mineral evaluations and estimates indicated and inferred resources for those prospects containing significant tonnage and grade. A total of approximately 96.2 MM lb Cb205 (43 pct of the tonnage at a grade exceeding 0.125 pct Cb205), and 11.8 MM lb U308, 27.9 MM lb Th02, 133.0 MM lb Y203, 637.6 MM lb ZrO2, and 241 MM lb REO are estimated to be contained within nine deposits totalling 37.8 million tons (at least 80 pct of resource tonnage also exceeds 0.5 pct Y203 + REO). Generally, half of the REO content is composed of the heavy yttrium subgroup. Several deposits also contain beryllium and tantalum; 2.1 MM lb of Ta205 and 8.9 MM lbs of BeO were estimated. These estimates would likely be substantially increased with additional exploration. Four deposit types were investigated; shear zones and fracture-related deposits, pegmatites, mineralized dikes, and placers. Mineralized dikes contain most of the beryllium, columbium, tantalum, yttrium, zirconium, and REE resources, whereas shear zones and fracture-related deposits (Ross-Adams mine) contain the principal of the uranium resource. Pegmatites are similarly mineralized as are dike deposits, and contain low levels of gold. Placer potential is suggested, but no deposits were found.

Falls of ground, such as falls of roof and sidewall collapses, are a major cause of fatalities and injuries in South African collieries. Based on information obtained from the accident reports of the various Chief Inspectors of nines, a statistical analysis was conducted covering the period 1970 to 1988. This study shows that the volume of rock in a fatal fall of ground is often quite small. In intersections, fatal falls are on average larger than in roadways and at the face. It was also found that in 36 % of all fatal falls of ground no temporary or permanent support was installed at the site of the accident.

Sapporo-Iwanai district is located at the intersection of the northeast Japan arc and Kuril arc, associated with the subduction zone. This area is characterized by Miocene submarine volcanism followed by Plio-Pleistocene subaerial volcanism.   Koryu, a small epithermal Au-Ag deposit, occurred in Pleistocene (1.4 - 0.85 Ma) within Miocene sedimentary rocks near a subaerial andesitic volcano, while Toyoha, a large epithermal Pb-Zn-Ag (-Au) deposit, also occurred near a subaerial andesitic volcano. Although most of the base metal deposits formed in middle-late Miocene, Toyoha formed in Plio-Pleistocene (2.93 - 1.60 Ma) within Miocene volcanic and sedimentary rocks. This epithermal mineralization was partly overprinted by xenothermal Cu-Sn-In(-Au) mineralization (2.68 - 0.49 Ma).   Hydrothermal alteration differs vastly between Koryu and Toyoha: host rocks at Koryu were not intensively altered, although wall rocks adjacent to veins were silicified, while those at Toyoha show intensive and extensive neutral-pH alterations. Geological and chronological studies show that middle~late Miocene (12.5 - 8.4 Ma) alteration was pervasive and overprinted by Plio-Pleistocene (2.93 - 0.49 Ma) alteration. The base metal veins in the middle-late Miocene were not well developed, but were large in number with great depth.   These studies show that the hydrothermal activity at Koryu is rather small and short-lived, while that at Toyoha is large, long-lived and characterized by overprinting of different hydrothermal systems. The subaerial magmatic activities yielded not only the andesite lavas, but also generated hydrothermal solutions for the formation of both Koryu and Toyoha. The metals were possibly derived from such magma. At Toyoha, the hydrothermal solutions could also remobilize metals from old ores.   The size, life span of magmatic-hydrothermal system, and overprinting on the old mineralizing systems could constrain the type of metal deposits (precious and polymetallic deposits) nearby subaerial andesitic volcanoes in Plio-Pleistocene.

South Arturo is a “Carlin-type”, breccia-hosted, oxide gold deposit located at the north end of the Carlin Trend. The discovery hole was drilled in July 2005 from mine dumps 1,000 feet south of the Dee open pit. Discovery hole (BD-72) encountered a cumulative 245 feet @ 0.056 opt Au beneath 850 feet of post mineral Tertiary Carlin Formation. Oxidation extends to depths greater than 2,000 feet in the deposit area. The deposit is presently in definition drilling stage with approximately 190,000 feet of drilling completed to date. A resource estimate is in progress. This paper will focus on the discovery and descriptive characteristics of the mineralization.

The West's Shell Pile has been used on sites with very soft ground conditions for over 60 years. Fibre reinforced precast concrete shells 900mm long are threadled onto an internal mandrel which can be extended according to the depth driven to attain the load bearing resistance. On completion of driving the mandrel is removed leaving the precast shells to form a permanent lining to the cast insitu concrete core. To give resistance to high contamination, a tar based epoxy coat is sprayed on the outside of the shells or a flexible PVC liner is installed inside the shells to protect the core. Fundamental to the resistance to contamination is the quality of the precast fibre reinforced concrete shell, the mix design and method of manufacture. A series of detailed laboratory experiments were carried out using samples immersed in concentrated acid and sulphate solution. The long term effects of exposure to contamination is recorded in the case studies of existing piles at two gasworks sites.

The mechanized mining cycle using loaders and shuttle cars had its peak in terms of usage in the mining industry during 1950 through 1960. In Brazil, this system is still used at underground coal mines in southern Santa Catarina coal basin. With the aim of investigating the benefits of a new mining scheme using the room and pillar method for these local mines, a computational simulator model was developed in order to investigate the mining cycle. This paper presents the methodology used to develop the simulator and the results that the simulation shows regarding impact of the proposed new scheme on mining productivity.

"Displacement Cast-in-Place (DCIP) piles are not a common deep foundation type in the Washington, DC Metro Area market. As a result, less regional data is available for these foundations compared to other alternate deep foundation types. Displacement cast-in-place piles (DCIP) differ from traditional Auger Cast-In-Place (ACIP) piles in that the pile annulus is formed by pushing a partially-flighted, auger bit to depth via a large mandrel. The auger bit includes a displacing body near the bottom of the tooling. Therefore, little to no spoils are generated during installation and the soil around the annulus is largely densified in-place due to the displacing body being slightly larger than the mandrel it is attached to.Due to this densification, one would expect that the theoretical DCIP capacities (compression or tension) would be greater than an ACIP pile (assuming a pile of similar length and diameter). After 20 static load tests and the installation of over 6,000+ piles on the MGM National Harbor Casino Project, the differences in pile support characteristics between DCIP and ACIP piles of same size and depth was small. The performance of both pile types depended on the density and type of soil within the bearing stratum. In some early cases of DCIP use, the performance exceeded expectations and appeared to be more in line (or better) than typical capacities obtained from driven displacement piles. Other times, the tip elevations could not be achieved or were so difficult to achieve that installation delays occurred and/or significant additional engineering effort was required to address piles short of their requirement embedment.This paper will discuss the limitations of DCIP pile installation in dense Coastal Plain soils and will present the lessons learned during this project. The paper will also compare the DCIP pile type to both conventional ACIP and driven displacement piles utilizing regional and site-specific load test and installation data."

"INTRODUCTION In a previous publication4 results were given of numerous experiments made on the in-flammability of gas mixtures consisting of methane, hydro a. carbon monoxide, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. Data were obtained and tables prepared giving the inflammable limits of each of these combustibles when mixed with various proportions of carbon dioxide and nitrogen. By the use of these data and the application of Le Chatelier's law, it was found possible to calculate the limits of inflammability of any gas mixture containing any or all of the above gases.Various mixtures of the five gases given above were prepared and their limits determined experimentally and then calculated. Good agreement was found between the determined and calculated results when complex gases encountered in mine safety work were tested. Of special significance was the accurate calculation of the limits of inflammability of gases from mine fires, gases from mine explosions, detonation products of explosives, blast—furnace gases, automobile exhaust gas, and other gases of a similar character.Using the method given in the above report, Yeaw5 investigated a number of industrial gases including oven, coal, producer, blue, carbureted blue, and dry quencher gases, and found the determined and calculated results to agree remarkably well, thus giving further proof of the value of such a means of determining dangerous conditions when combustible gases are encountered in practice.GASES FROM A POTASH MINEGases were recently encountered in a potash nine in New Mexico, containing the com-bustibles, methane, hydrogen, and ethane. In one special case a mild explosion occurred when these gases were mixed with the right proportions of air and ignited it therefore became necessary to know the inflammability of these mixtures in order that the proper precautions could be taken to prevent explosions."

During a programme to determine the suitability of the UK site for deep disposal of radioactive wastes, geostatistical methods were used to characterise rock heterogeneity on the basis of seismic and wireline acoustic-impedance data. The data were analysed to yield semi-variogram models that quantified the three-dimensional spatial heterogeneity of acoustic impedance. These models were reconciled with geological interpretations of the area and used to generate simulations of acoustic impedance, with wireline acoustic impedance as conditioning data. The three-dimensional simulated images were compared with actual seismic acoustic impedance. The variography confirmed a vertical zoning effect in the Borrowdale Volcanics, showing that it is caused by preferential clusters of high acoustic impedance values corresponding to regions of relatively low porosity. A new minerals engineering education programme is being developed in Australia which aims to provide tertiary institutions with a package of educationally sound, high quality courses for undergraduates, postgraduates and professionals. The programme is jointly funded by the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) and the Department of Education Training and Youth Affairs (DETYA) and brings together academics from a number of leading Australian universities, each developing modules in their particular area of expertise. The University of Queensland (UQ) and the Julius Kruttschnitt Minerals Research Centre(JKMRC) are jointly responsible for modules in several areas including comminution, physical separation and circuit design and optimization. Other modules are being developed by the University of South Australia (with the Sir Ian Wark Centre), Curtin University and Murdoch University. The major challenge of the programme is to provide a high standard of education that is accessible to students who may be located at several different institutions and some of whom maybe a long distance from the primary course leader. Rather than taking existing course material and putting it ‘on the web’, the programme aims to improve on past teaching practice through creative pedagogy and the development of interactive multimedia learning resources. Communications technology is used in an unobtrusive way, and the World Wide Web is used to create a flexible, user-friendly learning environment rather than to facilitate delivery of content. This paper describes the instructional design template currently being used and results of early implementation trials with groups of local and remote students.

Floor heave events in underground mining often happen suddenly and cause risk to workers and equipment. Reducing the risk of floor heave must be addressed in mining layout design. To improve that design one must understand the significant parameters that are correlated to the occurrence of floor heave. To accomplish that goal, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) completed a numerical study using FLAC3D, taking advantage of its strain softening and ubiquitous joint capabilities to better simulate the floor heave and caving mechanisms involved at an actual mine site.

The principal goal of the research described in the paper was to determine, by measurement of pillar scaling on pillars that have not failed, whether the pillar life prediction method developed by van der Merwe (2003) was valid as it stood or whether adjustments were necessary to the rates indirectly derived from observation of failed pillars. To this end, measurements were taken on over 350 pillars at 13sites on 6 mines. The project was done as a collaborative effort between the University of Pretoria, the Nancy School of Mines and CSIR Miningtek. During the course of the investigation, it was found that the majority of pillars display maximum scaling at mid height, that there was no clear preferential direction of pillar scaling, and that pillar corners do not scale significantly more than the mid pillar areas. The most important conclusion was that the scaling rates found by measurement agreed with the inferred rates found in the previous work. The previously developed procedure for the prediction of pillar life spans consequently requires no adjustment, although the error span is in the region of 20%. It is recommended to do further research into the effect of sealing of panels and, possible chemical changes taking place in the pillars as they age on the scaling rate.

"SUMMARYWaste management in general, and the water treatment of mine and mill effluents, has become an ever increasing burden for mining operations. A reduction in these expenditures would undoubtedly be desirable if this could in fact be achieved within effluent guidelines and monitoring requirements.A brief summary is presented of the research which has as its aim the development of methods which would reduce such costs and lead to solutions for environmentally acceptable close-out conditions for acid generating mine waters. The basic concepts of Ecological Engineering and Biological Polishing are presented, together with an indication of the present state of these research efforts. Details are provided of the progress of various experiments which aim to promote reducing conditions, organic matter production and the establishment of biological filters which remove metals from the water which are then retained within the waste management areas. These conditions should lead to a curtailment of acid drainage and an improvement in effluent quality.A description is provided of the first pilot demonstration using this approach to achieve a walk-away condition for the close-out of a massive sulphide tailings resulting from 10 years of operating a copper/zinc concentrator in Northern Ontario.1.0 INTRODUCTION1.1 Waste management and close-outIt is recognized that the achievement of a cost-effective and competitive mining operation, from the commencement of exploration for ore bodies through to the day-to-day efficient operation of the mine, requires a certain expertise and sophistication. For the past eight years, No. 2 mine of the Cumberland Railway & Coal Co., Springhill-a subsidiary of the Dominion Coal Co., Ltd.-has had an unenviable reputation for bumps. As the workings extended in certain directions under a greater cover, these bumps increased in severity and it became apparent some change in the system of extraction was necessary if the mine was to continue to operate. In September, 1924, following several fatalities resulting from bumps, the Mines Depart~ of Nova Scotia requested from the U. S. Bureau of Mines the services of George S. Rice, Chief Mining Engineer of the Bureau, to report on the conditions then prevalent in No. 2 mine, Springhill. °This request was promptly and courteously granted. Mr. Rice made a full investigation and a comprehensive and helpful report, which is embodied in the 1924 Annual Report of the Department of Public Works and Mines, Nova Scotia. Prior to 1925, the room-and-pillar method was employed, and in January of that year (there being a cessation of work from March to August due to labour troubles) longwall retreating on the west side, on a limited scale, and in a small section on the east side of the mine, was started. The major portion of the east side was not operated on this system till August, 1926, as there was developed a considerable area ready for pillar extraction between an arbitrary boundary and a point up to which bumps of any consequence had not been experienced. In ?the interval, development work for longwall retreating below the 5,900-foot level was vigorously pushed.

The Brisbane Airport Link Project (AirportlinkM7) includes the design and construction of more than 12.5 km of tunnels, with the Kedron interchange including four ramp tunnels that intersect with mainline tunnels and result in caverns with spans of up to 26 m. These caverns are in highly variable ground conditions with less than 35 m of cover underlying residential neighbourhoods and commercial properties. The Kedron caverns were constructed using the sequential excavation method (SEM). Owing to complex geometry and excavation sequence, the caverns were designed based on numerical modelling methods, including both two- and three-dimensional models. These numerical methods were used to develop a suite of support types with excavation sequences for the expected range of ground conditions. A combination of methods that included in-tunnel monitoring (convergence monitoring and extensometers), probe holes, endoscope probes, face mapping and ground settlement measurements were used to verify performance of the tunnel support systems and to select and refine the appropriate support system for each section of the caverns. The construction monitoring data indicated that numerical modelling can provide a good basis for predicting the performance of large-span underground openings in highly variable ground conditions. This publication presents the basic text for a 20-hour accident-prevention training course developed for supervisors by the Federal Bureau of Mines. During the past 2 years, the course has been used by the Bureau in teaching more than 300 groups of coal-mine supervisors-men whose responsibility is twofold: To manage in production and maintenance phases of coal mining and to guide their men along paths of safety. This is a handbook for teaching teachers. In this handbook will be found references to safety practices followed by companies that consistently have low accident records. These companies credit their outstanding performance to the adoption and faithful observance of accident prevention by supervisors and workers alike on a wholesome, cooperative basis. Teaching safety to workers involves both on-the-job and classroom-type instruction. If such training is to be permanently effective, it must be reinforced consistently on the job by the immediate supervisor of the worker. This publication is intended to provide such a supervisor with the motivation to provide such follow-up and shows how he can accomplish it effectively.

In recent years, one large mine collapse and numerous smaller bump events have resulted in a renewed interest in coal bump research. With numerical modeling, the Energy Release Rate (ERR) calculation quantifies the ?release? of the gravitational potential energy of the rock mass into the environment as mining progresses. This release of energy can occur passively in the form of heat and sound or dynamically in the form of pillar bumps or rock bursts. From the initial application of a calculated energy release rate in the deep hard-rock mines of South Africa, the ERR was found to have a significant correlation with the risk or potential of damaging coal bumps or rock bursts. In this research, an ERR calculation is incorporated into the modern LaModel program to facilitate the analysis for potential coal bumps. Initially the ERR calculations in LaModel are verified using a case study of cut sequences originally modeled using the MULSIM/NL program. Then, the ERR calculations are applied to a bump-prone mine in Southern Appalachia were a number of different pillar recovery cut sequences were used in order to minimize the risk of bumps.

OWING to two large falls of ground which resulted in serious accidents occurring towards the end of 1908, it became evident that the "open chamber" system then in use was unsuitable for the conditions existing in the Mount lVIorgan mine. It will be admitted that in all mining operation, the first consideration is the economy of the system adopted, combined with its safety and ability to give the desired output. A sectional system with square sets has been introduced into the mine, in which due attention has been paid to these factors. In this paper a brief description of this system will be given. An outline of those previously used will be ineluded, as it is necessary to understand the eonditions which existed in the mine at the initiation of the sectional system. Outside the actual mining methods employed, various points that might prove of interest will be touched on.The square set system of mining has been in use throughout the stopes in the gold ore in the upper levels of the mine since underground operations were started in Mount Morgan.

These attempts resulted in fibres (usually wood) to report to #1 Carbon-In-Pulp (CIP) tank, where the fibres are trapped in the CIP launder screens, and downstream carbon handling screens causing serious blinding problems. The trash screen in a Carbon-In-Pulp (CIP) or Carbon-In-Leach (CIL) gold mill removes fibres before they:are reground in the ball millsaturate with gold bearing leach solutionplug launder screens in CIP or CIL tanksplug carbon circuit pipe screenstherefore the trash screen is best placed ahead of the thickener."
