There is more than a century of experience in multiple seam mining in Germany. In several mines up to 20 seams had been excavated within the last decades. Due to the nature of the deposit and the history of technical development the older panels cause a complex stress distribution for the lower seams and the current longwalls in descending order of mining. The depth of the longwalls reaches up to 4000 ft. This causes a maximum vertical stress that reaches between 30 and appr. 60 MPa. To handle these conditions several support systems are applied for roadway heading. A central knowledge management system for ground control is used for design and dimensioning of support within the DSK. This paper gives an overview to the nature of German multiple seam mining and the solutions in matters of panel layout and support design. It describes the full lifecycle for roadways in the seam starting with the geological and geotechnical evaluation, the basics of roadway deformation in great depth, the development of planning tools and standards for German coal mines, the range of alternative of support systems and roadheading techniques, as well as the reinforcement measures and the processing of support at the T-junction of the face entry. This paper uses exemplary descriptions that are consolidated in a specialized reference book ?Gebirgsbeherrschung von Flözstrecken? ? ?Ground Control in Roadways? which summarizes the standards of ground control based on the development of the past 25 years in German coal mines.

To aid the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in their Resource Development Navigation Study, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (Bureau) examined the potential for mineral development near ten Alaska port sites. This report presents the results for the following four sites: Balboa Bay, Beluga, Lost River, and Point MacKenzie. There are 579 known deposits within the area considered for these ports. The majority of the deposits are located within a highway/railroad corridor examined for the Point MacKenzie port site. Based on the current level of knowledge, coal deposits near the Beluga and Point MacKenzie port sites are most likely to be developed in the near future. This conclusion is based on the fact that coal projects in these areas are actively being pursued for development. The mineral wealth surrounding the four port sites is substantial. Mine models were used to examine the potential for mining tin, gold, silver, copper, and molybdenum. The models were based on published reserve and grade data and therefore do not include proprietary company data which, if available, would likely change the analysis results. Of the models examined, the tin placer mine model developed for the Lost River port site proved to be closest to being economic.

"In 2011, a site study indicated that the application of Honeywell’s Multivariable Predictive Control Technology (MPC) to the Goldex processing facility would provide significant opportunities for improvement. Grinding MPC was implemented in the SAG Mill in June 2015. This pilot application, called Phase 1, featured one of the first Multivariable Predictive Controllers to be installed in a Canadian mineral processing plant. Since the implementation of MPC, gold recovery from the gravity circuit has increased. MPC contributed to a decrease in flotation feed particle size (120 to 112 µm) and an increase in the SAG feed tonnage (8.5% increase). MPC also increased and stabilized the % solids of the SAG feed, which can have an impact on cost reduction (mechanical maintenance). Additionally, MPC increased productivity, providing grinding operators with more time to perform other tasks. Further anticipated benefits include the standardization of the grinding circuit operation from one team to the next, thereby minimizing circuit disturbances resulting from different operating philosophies. This paper will discuss the advanced control project development and justification, the technology and rapid implementation process, the performance results and the benefits obtained.IntroductionGoldex is an underground mine located near Val-d’Or that is owned and operated by Agnico Eagle Mines Limited (AEM). Between 2008 and 2011, mining focused on the Goldex Extension Zone (GEZ). In 2011, the project was halted due to geotechnical problems; operations ceased until late 2013. Goldex operations resumed in September 2013 with the M and E zones, for which there were 0.7M gold ounces of proven and probable reserves, 2.1M ounces of measured and indicated resources and 1.2M ounces of inferred resources, totalizing 4M ounces. Life expectancy was extended until 2024."

Excellent metal quality, with lower power requirement, is attained in electrorefining titanium by using internal heating of the fused-salt bath. An internal heater provides more effective heat utilization, simplifies structural components in cell design, and prolongs cell life by eliminating direct application of heat to the cell container. This Bureau of Mines report covers one phase of the research in progress at the Electrometallurgical Experiment Station at Boulder City, Nev., for improving the techniques and lowering the total power requirement for electro-refining titanium metal.

The Bureau of Mines, between 1956 and 1963, examined 18 major pegmatite districts in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming to evaluate their content of beryllium, a material in short domestic supply that has become increasingly important to modern industry. This examination report includes the salient statistics on the production of pegmatite minerals other than quartz and feldspar; and brief descriptions of 170 specific pegmatite deposits.

The Ispat Mexicana SA de CV (IMEXSA) pelletising plant is located at Lazaro Cardenas on the west coast of Mexico. It is the primary source of feed stock for the adjacent direct reduction (DR) plants and steelmaking facilities. The initial design of the pellet plant began in 1981 for 3 Mtpa of DR grade pellets using local concentrate received by pipeline.' Several construction delays, an ownership change, and a decision to use imported concentrates delivered in 60 000 to 90 000 tonnes ship cargoes required flowsheet modifications and additions. The design concepts are described for the plant which includes concentrate regrind to final pelletising particle size.

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. The principles of shear-driven aggregation of particulate matter suspended in fluids, a common industrial method of concentration and separation, were applied to a convecting magma to estimate the time required to sparge or strip the PGE and Cr content and concentrate it into the boundary layers. It was calculated that an ore-grade (e.g. 6 ppm PGE) boundary layer about 1 m thick would require 100 000 years at most to form from a body of magma 500 m deep with a PGE content of 20 ppb. Since concentration would be most vigorous when the magma was warmest, at least half of this concentration would take place in the first 10 000 years. The effect of dispersive pressure in the boundary layer would generate a concentration high of refractories just below the top of each boundary layer and another just above the bottom. If the magma was a double-diffusive system, it might evolve by the downward cascade of enriched boundary-layer material into the hotter, lower magma layers, where depending on saturation levels chromites would equilibrate and sulphides undergo partial or total resorption, enriching PGE levels in any remaining sulphides. This cascade process would in time greatly enrich the lower regions in PGE-bearing sulphides and chromites

"Construction of a new bridge in a seismically sensitive area requires careful assessment of earthquake impact on the serviceability of the facility. Not only is the superstructure vulnerable, the foundations play a key role in the bridge’s survivability. A new bridge in eastern part of the state of Missouri in the U.S.A. is located in a seismically active area and hence subject to additional thrust on the foundations and superstructure and potential damage due to liquefaction. An eleven span bridge with foundation soils varying from shallow bedrock to over 30 m (100 feet) overburden soils were considered for the bridge support piers. Two of the bridge support bents located within the flood plain area through over 30m (100 feet) of alluvial deposits were considered most affected by an earthquake event due to the additional thrust and lateral ground spreading. This paper describes the determination of site specific seismic hazard, numerical modelling of the foundation system, and methodology of dynamic analyses, effects of lateral spreading and liquefaction potential on bridge support bents. From numerical modelling using FLAC, the increase in thrust on piers and deformations were computed to predict the behavior of the foundations.INTRODUCTIONA newly constructed bridge on route US 40 crosses the Missouri River west of St. Louis, Missouri and upstream of Mississippi River in mid-west USA. The west abutment area has near surface bedrock while the east abutment area has overburden deposits over 30m (100 feet) thick, mostly river sediments comprising of silts, lean clays and sands overlying bedrock. Softer layers of silts and sands in the east river bank area are assessed to be liquefiable during a high magnitude earthquake event. St Louis area has a potential for a high magnitude earthquake due to the New Madrid Fault some 160km (100 miles) south. The bridge foundations were designed as drilled piers, 2 m (8 feet) in diameter and socketed into the bedrock. Bents No. 10 and 11, located in the lower flood plain area of the river, are considered to be most affected by a seismic event.In order to perform dynamic analyses of the foundations, earthquake ground motion time history was developed for the specific site using a Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis (PSHA) and selecting and scaling of a recorded time history. Relying on the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazard Program for the PSHA and AASHTO Guide Specifications for LRFD Seismic Bridge Design, spectral acceleration values for the site were developed. The spectral acceleration values were for a 7 percent probability of exceedance in 75 years (1000 year return). Numerical modelling using FLAC computer program was performed. This paper presents the seismic design parameters, methodology used in the dynamic analyses, static and dynamic analyses, impact and mitigation of liquefaction on Bents 10 and 11 and the abutment fills, and effect of lateral spreading on the foundations in the lower flood plain area of the bridge. From the numerical modelling, increase in thrusts on pier foundations and estimated deformation were computed."

A coal shuttle car equipped with a pulsed laser optical ranging system to provide guidance for an automatic steering system was tested in production coal mining. Test results are presented for the two mines where testing took place, and some operator's reactions are included. Automatic steering control keeps the car cantered in an entry, and automatic turns are made at intersections as signaled by the operator. All other controls-tram, conveyor, brake, etc, remain manual and require operator control. Complete override of steering while in the automatic mode is retained by the operator, who may grab the steering wheel at any time and turn in opposition to the automatic signal by applying about 10 foot-pounds of torque.

"Rapid expansion of urban areas dictates the need to expand/rehabilitate the existing buried infrastructure at the same rate. The technical challenges such as variable soil and rock profiles, high groundwater tables and limitations imposed by the built environment combined with present fiscal and schedule limitations necessitates the implementation of fast and cost effective construction methods. Since drilling procedures and equipment allow the construction of overlapped pile systems in almost all subsurface conditions, the secant pile walls have become a cost-effective shoring option for such infrastructure expansion/rehabilitation projects. The secant pile walls constructed in a circular plan layout to form a vertical shaft provide unique advantages since they act as a compression ring. Secant pile walls require stringent drilling tolerances be achieved in order to provide structural support and to work as a compression ring in addition to a groundwater cut-off wall.This paper outlines design methodology, installation procedures and verification techniques used for the secant pile compression ring for the Waterloo Landfill Pumping Station No.2. The secant pile compression ring had a 6m inner diameter with over a 20m wall depth and over 18m excavation depth. The details of subsurface conditions, analytical and numerical methods used in design are presented here. The details of the monitoring system are introduced and results of monitoring are presented and compared with analytically estimated and numerically simulated quantities. The results presented in this study are considered to be of interest to those involved in design and construction of vertical circular shafts."

This Bureau of Mines report describes a shaft closure demonstration project in which 11 inverted pyramid-shaped plugs were used to plug abandoned open mine shafts in Galena, KS, The inverted pyramid-shaped forms, fabricated from steelplate, were designed so that the inverted base would be larger, by 4 ft on a side, than the approximate size of the shaft opening at the surface residuum-solid rock interface. After the surface openings of the shafts were trimmed with a backhoe, the steel forms, complete with reinforcing, were lowered into the openings and filled with concrete; the remaining portions of the openings above the plugs were backfilled to slightly above the surrounding surface level with waste rock and soil. Location and elevation monuments were installed for long-tern evaluation of the success of the project.

Introduction The impact of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, or Superfund, as well as the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and their state counterparts underscore the intention of the nation's lawmakers to reduce the risk from hazardous substance to American society. The promises and requirements embodied in these laws, together with their prospects for liability, will continue to have a very substantial impact on decision making in the mining industry. These laws present the prospects for staggering liabilities, often of an unquantifiable nature in terms of time and amount. It is therefore necessary to keep them in clear focus. This is particularly true in light of President Reagan's signing into law the Superfund amendments on Oct. 17, 1986, and in light of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) major policy pronouncement of July 3, 1986, regarding solid wastes from extraction of ores and minerals. This article examines the general trends as well as the specific provisions of these laws in an effort to assess the prospects of liability for the mining industry of releases of hazardous substances into the environment. Hazardous substances vs. hazardous wastes The distinction between the terms "hazardous substances" and "hazardous wastes" is important to appreciate for the purposes of assessing the potential for liability for a mining operation. Hazardous substance is a term that appears in and is defined in the Superfund Act. In Superfund, it is defined by reference to other substances that have been declared to be hazardous under other federal environmental statutes, such as RCRA, the Clean Air Act, and the Clean Water Act. Hazardous waste is a term that is less all-encompassing than hazardous substance, as that term is defined by RCRA. Hazardous substances do not need to be wastes to be considered hazardous for the purpose of Superfund liability. A "release" of a hazardous substance into the environment can bring about potential liability under Superfund. Many mining wastes, even though they are not considered hazardous wastes by EPA under RCRA, have been determined by that agency to be capable of bringing about liability under Superfund if they contain chemical substances, such as the heavy metals copper, lead, mercury, zinc, silver, and others. Therefore, it is not sufficient for the mining industry to be able to answer whether one has hazardous waste at a mining site. That question only goes partway in addressing the potential for liability. The next question is, do one's solid or liquid mining wastes contain hazardous substances that could bring about liability under Superfund? Superfund 1980 law: A review Some provisions of Superfund as it existed before its recent amendments must be considered. The law provides that the owners and operators of mining sites, together with those who transport hazardous substances to such sites, can be held jointly and severally liable for the cost of cleaning up the site. The concept of joint and several liability means that one party, as among many, can be held totally responsible for the costs of cleanup. When the 2008 Olympic Games begin in Beijing, China is September it will not only mark the end of the journey for the Olympic torch and the thou-sands of participating athletes, but the games will also mark the culmination of a massive amount of construction in the city. On display for the world to see will be 31 new and refurbished venues including the 91,000-seat National Stadium called the ?Bird?s Nest? and the aquatics center, called the Water Cube. What will not be featured as prominently on the television cameras broadcasting the games around the world will be the network of tunnels built beneath the city. But that infrastructure of rail lines will be of critical importance to the games. While preparing to host the world, China added a subway tunnel that will include four stops in the Olympic Park. The 4.4-km (2.7-mile) subway line that runs through the complex of stadiums, gymnasiums and parks began trial operations in June. Prior to the opening of that line, Beijing's No. 5 subway line, which runs through the heart of the city from north to south, opened in October. As most mining companies are taking advantage of the high market prices for base metals such as steel, copper and zinc, numerous challenges still face them. While demand is strong from countries like China and the United States, demand is still mixed in Europe. This leads to the question of how long these high prices and overall high global demand will last. The tremendous market prices of most precious and base metals have enabled many companies to pay down a significant amount of debt accrued during acquisition and capital expenditure phases. Additionally, mining companies have been able to internally fund and engage in large projects to address future growth, (Less, 2006), thus maximizing the performance of the existing asset base, driving maintenance costs down, and improving and empowering the work-force (Mining Journal, 2006). Market prices and general efficiency gains have addressed these issues to some extent. However, critical issues still face operating managers in the mineral pro-cessing side of the industry. Energy prices, for example, continue to have a negative impact on cash costs for producing an ounce of gold or ton of a given base metal (Cummins, 2003).

Longwall caving, one of the most economical and attractive mining methods, is yet one of the most difficult and hazardous.1 This dualism is inherent in a method which manipulates the mine supports themselves to aid in excavation. The difficulty is further compounded by the lack of an analytical method to predict and control results. This paper is intended to meet this need by providing a first approximation to the mechanics involved. The analysis will be limited to materials which are linear-elastic, homogeneous and isotropic. The rock structure is assumed to consist of beds of uniform thickness with no interbed bonding.2 Consequently, the mine roof can be likened to a beam, in which the action characteristic of longwall caving is the controlled deflection of the barrier supports. This deflection causes load to be intentionally transferred from these barrier props to the working face.3 Two of the requirements of this method, shared in common with other mining methods, are the provision of (1) adequate and (2) safe working space. The third requirement is the one characteristic of longwall caving and is somewhat in conflict with the second; (3) the development of near-failure static loads at the face. Requirement (1) is handled by spacing the barrier props sufficiently far from the working face for efficient operation. Requirement (2) limits the static stresses in the structure to predetermined allowable values. This means that it is not desirable to induce a maximum load on the working face as requirement (3) may imply. Such a condition could produce collapse in the whole structure. It is the purpose of the undercut to limit the depth, and thereby control the failure of the face. Therefore, requirement (3) really means the development of an optimum, not maximum, load which, in conjunction with undercutting, produces failure at the working face, with minimum powder consumption. Stress analysis requires an exact delineation of the structure and loads. The structure will be defined as the immediate roof and its supports. Since the roof is severed at the caving line, the supports reduce to the barrier props and the working face, as shown in Fig. 1. The mechanics of failure within the working face itself are complex and beyond the scope of this study, since the face represents a typical mine invert structure.4 However, this lack can be made good by the judicious collection of field data. The primary load on the structure is its own weight or body load which can be considered uniformly distributed over its upper surface. Additional loading occurs due to interference of overbeds with the structure. Wherever this occurs, the effect can be approximated by a load uniformly distributed on the upper surface of the structure.5 When this interference is intermittent, as with a much thicker overbed, the elastic curve for the overbed is superimposed on that for the structure and the extent of interference noted, as Fig. 2 shows. However, for simplicity, this study will ignore such intermittent loads without impairing the generality of approach. Consequently, the free-body diagram is that of a uniformly loaded cantilever beam with an inter-mediate support, as shown in Fig. 3. The vertical travel lead, referred to as "VTL" system, was first developed and patented by C.W. Bermingham in the 1970's. This lead system was developed in response to the fundamental limitations of either a fixed lead or hanging lead system. The fixed lead system is well suited to level job sites with few obstructions and has the advantage of faster positioning of the lead, the hanging lead is very adaptable to different elevations and batter piles but takes much longer to position. Therefore the Vertical Travel Lead was developed to combine the advantages of fixed leads, fast and accurate positioning, with the ability to adjust the height of the lead base up or down. The VTL lead is connected to the boom by a sliding connection which allows the lead to be elevated or lowered below grade. The advantages of the VTL system were recognized by many foundation specialists and they have become the Industry standard in Canada , US Railway Construction , and many parts of the USA.

The use of water-cooled copper components as sidewall elements of submerged arc furnaces and other pyrometallurgical applications has become increasingly common. The high cooling efficiency of copper has made it possible to increase the service life of furnace refractories when compared to conventional refractory linings. However, even the self-healing effect of ?freezing? worn areas of the lining does not necessarily protect the copper coolers against wear or corrosion completely. In order to avoid furnace explosions, various methods have been used to monitor the wear of coolers. Unfortunately, these have not been able consistently to identify localized wear. Thos Begbie (South African) and SAVEWAY (German) jointly developed technology to embed a line sensor into the copper cooler during the casting process. This system allows an exhaustive monitoring of the copper cooler. A SAVELINE sensor is placed inside the copper-cooling panel between the water-cooling passage and the hot face of the panel. The sensor follows the meandering shape of the cooling water channels. In the first instance, the sensor provides analogue information as the thickness of the copper reduces. Secondly, this wear signal will be confirmed by a signal of interruption if the sensor is washed away. Because of the structure of the sensor, a self-diagnosis is possible and indications can be confirmed (double proofed).Subsequent to the manufacture of some test pieces, coolers for a large submerged arc furnace were manufactured. The sensorized coolers have been installed at the intermittent surface (slag line) where the largest amount of corrosion has been encountered. The system has been operating since December 2005 in what is considered one of the largest submerged arc furnaces in South Africa. Traditionally (with a few exceptions) tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have been utilized on tunnel projects where the risks associated with deep tunnels (rock burst, squeeze, etc) are low (or expected to be low). This has generally been due to the extremely adverse consequences of entrapping or damaging a TBM under such conditions; but also due to the relative difficulty of dealing with these ground conditions in the confined working area of a TBM, in comparison to a drill and blast heading. This paper review the constraints of operating a TBM in a deep tunnel and discusses related project experience, particularly recent and current experience with TBMs in the deep Alpine Base Tunnels. Potential future applications of TBMs in the development of large, deep underground mines are also discussed.

The Flambeau and Ridgeway Mines, both owned and operated by wholly owned subsidiaries of Kennecott Minerals Company, were located very close to populated areas having initial concerns about health, safety and the environment. The success of both operations depended upon developing a framework of community support and enhancing sustainable development opportunities throughout the entire life cycle of the mining operations to address these concerns. The protection of the Flambeau River was the cornerstone of the Flambeau Mine’s success. The highest priority for the Ridgeway Mine was to ensure long-term physical, chemical and ecological stability of the reclaimed mine site. Both of these goals have been achieved and are discussed in this paper, which highlights Kennecott Minerals Company’s integration of sustainable development principles into its business decision-making and management processes.
