Studies were carried out to determine whether filtration rate changes observed in an iron ore concentrator were due to variations in particle shape. It was confirmed that ores mined from different locations differed in filtration rates by as much as 60%. However, when image analysis was used to quantify the shapes of the individual particles in the filtration feed, it was found that the particle shapes showed almost no variation, and the shapes did not correlate with the filtration rate. It was also determined that the filtration rate variations were not caused by changes in particle size distribution. These results suggest that the differences in filtration rate are due to factors other than size and shape, such as surface chemistry.

"Through the years, a wide variety of dust control methods have been utilized at mineral processing operations. While some have been successful, many have been highly ineffective. Dust Control systems currently in use include baghouse systems, fog systems, surfactant spray systems, and foam dust suppression. While baghouse systems can be effective, they are capitalintensive and costly to operate and maintain. Chemical dust control programs can be very effective. However, if applied incorrectly, they can have detrimental effect on mineral recovery. Thus, many operations utilize a combination of baghouses and water, often with limited success.Recent advancements in surfactant and polymer chemistry have resulted in substantially improved chemical dust suppression programs. These products range from non-corrosive surfactant/humectant combinations for road dust control to foam-based systems for crushers and transfer points, to advanced polymers for pile binding and soil stabilization. These advances are discussed in detail, citing results from fieldwork in the precious and base metals industries.INTRODUCTIONThe global nature of the mineral processing industry presents a unique set of challenges. Traditional thinking would tell us what works in one place should work in another. This could not be further from the truth in the area of dust control. We learn very quickly that there are a number of factors that can affect the efficiency and success of a dust control program and that these factors are not all chemical or equipment related. Some of these factors include facility maintenance, product selection, water quality and characteristics, and economic considerations.What has been learned from past experience is that each mineral processing plant presents a unique set of factors that will affect the ability to create an optimal dust control program. This paper presents a myriad of treatment options that will highlight the advancements in chemical dust suppression products and equipment."

The investment decision making process in the insurance and finance industries is affected by new advances such as simulation techniques. These advances have improved the discounted cash flow method (DCF). In DCF, a dynamic and flexible model construction is not possible because it does not consider uncertain conditions. Each project should be evaluated taking into account the related uncertainties because the related uncertainties determine the characterization of the project. Related uncertainties can be processed in dynamic DCF, which is applicable to both financial and non-financial industries with different kind of uncertainties, such as power generation and petroleum projects. The dynamic DCF method can estimate net present value (NPV) while managing related project uncertainties with a simulation method like Monte Carlo Simulation. The simulation method is preferred because its output is unbiased. Therefore, a more realistic financial evaluation of the project can be concluded. In spite of the improvement of dynamic DCF, this project evaluation method is not used frequently in mining industry. However, the mining industry is ideally suited to this concept because it is highly dependent on estimations such as orebody size and ore grade. During the project evaluation stage, these uncertainties can be included with the dynamic DCF method. This study aims to contribute to increasing the usage of this method in mining projects. A copper reserve in Turkey is selected as a case study to apply uncertainty assessment for the evaluation of NPV.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the mining industry has the highest average annual fatality rate (31.9 per 100,000 workers) among all major American industry. To address this, a major research program to reduce hazard exposure of miners with computer-assisted mining equipment was initiated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines.1 One application involves the manual process of extracting and hauling coal where operators, in the tight confines of a mine, can be struck or caught by mobile machinery. The approach to remedy this problem uses a guidance system on the haulage equipment so that it follows the machine that extracts coal. This, in essence, involves sensor-based docking of the machines. Sensors that can survive the hostile mine environment of dust, methane gas, and water, play the key role. Computer analysis of the mining machine's movements and empirical machine characterizations were conducted to establish operating requirements and spatial limitations to ensure proper loading of coal into the haulage equipment. These data served in the selection of a sensing system. Various technologies such as scanning laser systems and ultrasonic sensors have frequently been used in other applications but were found unacceptable. However, a near infrared (IR) sensor employing active targets met the requirements. The sensor has a nominal 75° conical field-of-view and a range from 0.1 to 18.0 m. For the single target mode, nominal range accuracy was 4.3% at a distance of 3.56 m. Correction algorithms were generated reducing the error to 0.6%. Airborne dust testing showed less than 0.8% accuracy (worst case) degradation at levels exceeding (by a factor of 7.5) concentrations permitted by Federal law. The sensor can track multiple active targets providing five degrees-of-freedom (DOF) measurements. Using four targets, the nominal range accuracy was 0.4% without correction algorithms. A guidance system for the haulage system to follow the mining machine does not exist commer¬cially. Such a system can reduce fatalities and injuries by current haulage mining equipment, and is a viable alternative to current haulage control.

A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.Low-sulfidation epithermal gold mineralisation at Ridge Mountain occurs within the Oligocene to Miocene volcanic rocks comprising andesite, porphyritic dacite and diatreme breccia. A diatreme breccia complex with a NE–SW elongated orientation covers an area of 3.0 × 1.7 km. Four main stages of mineralisation were identified, comprising: E–W- to NW–SE-trending quartz-chalcedony veins with disseminated pyrite, chalcopyrite and gold. N–S- to NNE–SSW-trending breccia veins with quartz matrix and disseminated pyrite and accessory sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and gold. NE–SW-trending quartz and calcite veins with disseminated pyrite and accessory sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and gold. ESE–WNW- to ENE–WSW-trending quartz veins with disseminated pyrite. This stage is only mineralisation that is hosted by diatreme breccia and clearly postdates.Quartz veins of the first, third and fourth stage are less than 2 m wide. Only breccia veins of the second stage are up to 10 m wide. Gold is present in all stages as microscopic inclusions in quartz and sporadically in pyrite. Macroscopic gold can be seen in the first and second mineralisation stages. Gold commonly occurs in association with sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite in the second and third mineralisation stages.CITATION:Kucera, J, 2015. "INTRODUCTION The tests described in this publication were planned to provide information on the explosibility of metal-powder dust clouds. This subject has become increasingly important because of the large quantity and variety of metallic powders now used for military and industrial purposes. To provide the increased amounts of metallic powders needed in the manufacture of munitions and to supply the demand created by the rapid growth of powder metallurgy, existing metal-powder plants have been enlarged, production schedules accelerated, and new plants erected. In some cases new methods of producing metal powders have been developed. This increased production and the development of new manufacturing methods have caused an increase in the number of metal-powder fires and explosions, with accompanying heavy loss of life and property. These have emphasized the need for information on methods of providing protection against hazards inherent in the production and handling of powdered metals. This paper gives results of laboratory inflammability and explosibility tests made to April 1, 1943, and is a progress report. Many descriptive details have been omitted purposely; they will supplied in a later publication, expected to be a Bureau of Mines bulletin."

Primary cementing is the process of placing cement in the annulus between the casing and the formations exposed to the wellbore. Portland cement was first used in 1903 in the Lopoc Field in California for well cementing. Since then, the major objective of primary cementing has always been to provide zonal isolation in oil, gas and water wells, i.e. to exclude fluid(s) in one zone from another zone in the well. To achieve this objective a hydraulic seal must be created between the casing and cement and between the cement and the formations, while at the same time preventing fluid channels in the cement sheath. This requirement makes primary cementing the most important operation performed on a well. Without complete isolation in the wellbore, the well may never reach its full producing potential. The industry knowledge on cements relies heavily on empirical data, but the chemistry, physics and structure of cement are not fully understood yet. The strength of concrete can be increased essentially by reducing its porosity through optimizing the size distribution of its components and filling the residual porosity of the hydrated cement phase with inorganic fillers. This approach has successfully utilized in different ways and several technologies for placing high performance oil and gas well cements have been developed over the last few decades. There are reasons to believe that the next source of improvement will lie in the fine-tuning of the hydrates themselves and of the different parameters that drive short (ionic?covalent bonding) and long (ionic correlation) interactions.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's Wheaton Station and tunnel design was completed and offered for bid in the Spring of 1983. The format was unique to the Authority: a four part, four fiscal year contract developed in response to funding limitations with construction divided into four stages allowing the maximum amount of work to be done each year for the funds available. The bid was based on the entire contract, but was orginally awarded for only the first year's work. Each year's work had a maximum funding limitation thus safe guarding the Authority from a grossly unbalanced bid. The Authority's estimate for this work was $83,871,524. The low bid came in at 61% of this for a total low bid of $51,512,058. The low bidder was ILBAU America Corporation whose home offices are in Austria. Following receipt of the bids (and resolution of objections cited by other bidders who felt that the job could not be done for the $51 Million dollar figure), a Notice-To-Proceed was given on October 5, 1983. The construction contract allows a Value Engineering Change Proposal, called a VECP which is initiated and developed by the contractor to change the drawings, specifications or other requirements of the contract. Among other things the VECP should decrease the contract price while maintaining the service life, reliability, ease of maintenance, and standardized features and appearance and not require an unacceptable extension of the contract time. Volume I This report presents the first national survey of miners' attitudes and opinions about their-work. The goal is to present attitudinal data that bears on coal production. Interviews were conducted in 26 mines with 2,000 miners. High levels of cooperation were exhibited by management, union and the employees. Data are presented about miners' attitudes about general aspects of their work such as pay, supervision, their jobs, etc. Another section of this report reviews opinions about specific aspects of work performance. Recommendations are presented.

Engineers are frequently faced with the problem of having to predict oil recovery from a solution gas drive reservoir in the early life of a field. This is often the time when actual laboratory or field-derived gas-oil permeability (kg/k0) data are not yet available. Although excellent collections of k0/k0 data for various types of rocks may be found in the literature,1,2,3 a need exists for a more detailed correlation of k0/k0 data with core properties such as porosity, permeability, clay content or pore-size distribution. It is the purpose of this article to present this type of correlation for sandstone material. The correlation is based on laboratory tests performed on over 300 core samples from 19 reservoirs in the United States and Canada. EXPERIMENTAL Cores were analyzed by routine procedures, using samples of conventional size (7/8-in. diameter, 7/8-in long) cut parallel to the bedding planes. Air permeability was measured at 1.67 atm mean pressure in a Hassler-type apparatus. Porosity was determined with the aid of a Ruska bulk volume meter and a Boyle's Law rock volume meter, An evaporation method' was used to evaluate irreducible water saturations. Core samples were saturated with 25,000 ppm NaCl brine. The brine was reduced to the irreducible saturation, and the remainder of the pore space was filled with kerosene. This was followed by multiphase flow tests using the so-called "dispersed feed" technique.5 n this technique, gas and oil (kerosene and kerosene-saturated air) were dispersed with the aid of a porous Alun-durn feed head, the face of which contained a waffle-shaped system of Lucite-lined grooves. Oil entered the back side of the feed head and emerged at the raised areas of the front face. Gas was introduced directly into the system of grooves at the front face. The gas-oil mixture then entered the test core which was kept in capillary contact with the feed head. Permeabilities were determined from rate and pressure measurements and saturations from weights. All determinations were performed at equilibrium or steady-state conditions. Pore-size distributions were determined on selected samples by a mercury injection technique.6 GENERAL CORRELATIVE TRENDS When examining data from a given reservoir, it was noted that k0/k0 vs saturation curves became generally less steep as specific air permeability increased, a development that has a favorable effect on oil displacement efficiency by solution gas drive. This trend has also been reported by others in the literature.' An effect of porosity on k0/k0 data was also noted. This effect was not generally discernible in a study of relative permeability data for a given reservoir but became apparent when data for sandstone reservoirs of similar lithology but differing average porosity were compared. For instance, in a comparison of argillaceous and/or calcareous sandstones from 11 reservoirs ranging in average porosities from 14 to 28 per cent, a definite trend was noted, indicating that for a given permeability k0/k0 curves became less favorable (i.e., steeper) as porosity increased. A similar trend was observed for a group of comparatively clean sandstones from five reservoirs ranging in average porosities from 15 to 21 per cent. For a given permeability and porosity, comparatively clean sandstones gave more favorable k0/k0 curves than argillaceous and/or calcareous sandstone or chert reservoirs. The laboratory studies also showed that least favorable k0/k0 curves were exhibited by shaly sandstone, conglomerate, and sandstone containing carbon inclusions. Gold placers can be difficult to locate in areas where tectonic activity and paleogeography have changed significantly since placer formation. Existing placer exploration models are useful in areas that have a relatively simple geological history, identifiable relationships with parent sources, or a history of placer mining. However, exploration becomes increasingly difficult in areas where tectonic activity and sedimentary recycling repeatedly redistribute the gold. Gold placers in the Waitaki River catchment, North Otago, New Zealand have no primary source within the catchment. During the Eocene placer gold was transported by a river ('Buster River') that flowed in a northeast direction from Central Otago toward a coastline at Maerewhenua, North Otago. This river and coastal system was inundated by marine transgression during the middle Tertiary. Since the Miocene its placer deposits have been uplifted and eroded and any links with parent sources have been severed. Changes in paleogeography resulted in local reconcentration and local dilution of placer gold in different areas in the Waitaki catchment. Thin veneers of old Waitaki River gravels (Kurow Gravels), containing gold recycled from the older placers, have been deposited unconformably on strath surfaces cut into Tertiary or older rocks. These gravels along with remnant Eocene fluvial and shallow marine strata provide potential placer exploration targets. Uplift and erosion of non-auriferous rocks in the Waitaki catchment to the west and north of the study area has resulted in considerable dilution of potential placer deposits downstream, especially in areas of gravel aggradation. We present a placer exploration model that is founded on answering fundamental questions pertaining to the paleogeography and geological history of the sediments associated with the placers.

Apparatus for maintaining constant — but adjustable — pulp level and rate of froth removal are described. The results of preliminary experiments into the effect of scraping speed on the rate of solid and liquid recovery with a semi-batch system are presented. Glass spheres restricted to a narrow size range is the solid under investigation. Graphical methods for estimating the mass of recoverable material and the zero error are given. The semi-batch procedure1 is extensively used in laboratory flotation testing, though the method is subject to variability of moderate severity. Raffinot2 concluded from a statistical study of the difference between replicate tests, that the ptincipal source of errot was the test itself and not sampling or chemical analysis. These differences can be ascribed principally to changes in pulp volume and reagent concentration, and uncontrolled rate and depth of scraping. Semi-batch testing has been criticized1 on these grounds as a means of investigating flotation kinetics. This paper discusses and describes modifications to laboratory flotation equipment which reduce the number of manual operations and lead to improved control. Kinetic studies were the primary reason for developing the apparatus described. It should, however be a useful aid in normal flotation testing. Some preliminary results of experiments are presented.

The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1986 was $405.2 million, a slight decrease from that of 1985. Alabama was second in the Nation in production of bauxite, crushed marble, and ferroalloys; third b fire clay; fifth in masonry cement and lime; sixth in total clays; and seventh in recovered sulfur. Alabama ranked 19th nationally in value of nonfuel minerals produced. Cement, clays, lime, sand and gravel, and stone were the major commodities produced.

The development and introduction of a preventive maintenance scheme in the coke ovens department, coal preparation section, of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., Newcastle steelworks, is described together with its operation and the results achieved during the first 12 months.'fhe scheme consists essentially of an engineering analysis of the plant to establish maintenance schedules, and to record the details on reference cards.Items are reviewed progressively and a weekly work schedule is prepared, from which work orders are passed on to the maintenance foremen. These foremen in turn originate action orders and issue inspection sheets as required. Results are then reported back to the maintenance planner and used to revise norms, practices, and cycles.INTRODUCTIONWhat is maintenance? Some people consider maintenance to be the work involved in putting things together again after they have fallen apart. Heavy mineral deposits are becoming more complex in terms of their compositional variation, particle mineralogy and size distributions, and present challenges for the operation of separation equipment to achieve the required grades and recoveries. Changes in equipment design and concepts potentially provide new opportunities for the beneficiation of heavy mineral sands deposits. The development of a framework for the fundamental understanding of separator performance issues is a first step to develop new machines. This paper will present a first step analysis of electro-static and magnetic separation machines with their application to real separation scenarios.

Field measurements utilizing a seat pad accelerometer were made on 25 underground coal mining machines in order to quantify the vibration levels experienced by the operators. Those data were combined with information on the statistics of the operating times of those machines in order to compare the operator's vibration exposure to the criteria in ISO 2631, "A Guide for the Evaluation of Human Exposure to Whole Body vibration." The comparison showed that about 30% to 40" of all underground coal mining machine operators can be expected to be exposed to vibration exceeding the fatigue decreased proficiency criterion, whereas only 10 to 15% would be expected to experience vibration exceeding the exposure limit. The primary sources of the exposure are shuttle cars and possibly scoop trams. Detailed exposure statistics are presented and the implications of the results are discussed.

En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la importancia de la integración tecnológica en la minería para mejorar la productividad y la gestión de los activos. La actividad minera debe ser enfocada como una cadena de valor que tiene diferentes procesos alineados con la estrategia y los objetivos de la empresa. Dichas definiciones van a reflejar la manera cómo la empresa decide relacionarse con su entorno: accionistas, clientes, proveedores, trabajadores, estado, comunidad. Los procesos se traducen a nivel de secuencias de actividades y de ejecución de estas definiciones.
