"Under certain conditions of moisture and oxygen, sulphides can spontaneously heat, a phenomenon known as self-heating. In this paper, we test a hypothesis that galvanic interaction between some sulphides can promote self-heating. Galvanic interaction is controlled by restpotential difference between minerals and their surface area of contact (particle size). In order to decrease rest-potential, four sulphides were tested: pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena. Two series of samples consisting of mixtures of two sulphides, each representing a mass fraction of 50 %, were run in standard self-heating tests. The first series comprised five mixtures, two with low rest-potential difference (pyrite-chalcopyrite and chalcopyrite-sphalerite) and three with high rest-potential difference (pyrite-galena, chalcopyrite-galena and pyrite-sphalerite). The second series was performed on a pyrite-sphalerite mixture at four particle sizes (80 % passing 850 µm, 300 µm, 75 µm and 38 µm). The first series showed that the individual sulphides and the mixtures of low rest-potential difference did not self-heat but the mixtures of high rest-potential difference did self-heat. The second series showed that self-heating increased inversely with particle size (increased specific surface area) and revealed that it was the fineness of the pyrite (high rest-potential sulphide) that governed the self-heating effect, indicating the rate-limiting step is the reduction reaction on pyrite (cathodic mineral). The increase in self-heating with high rest-potential difference and increasing particle fineness supports the hypothesis that galvanic interaction contributes to sulphide self-heating. A possible mechanism based on the hydrogen sulphide hypothesis is proposed where the reduction reaction at the cathodic mineral surface is ferric to ferrous. The understanding gained will be of interest to those involved in storage, shipping and disposal of sulphide minerals.INTRODUCTIONSulphide mineral ores are the major source of most base metals such as copper, zinc, nickel and lead. Once the ore is extracted, the sulphide minerals are liberated by size reduction (crushing and grinding), concentrated by flotation, and the concentrates sent for further processing to extract the metal (smelting and refining). At the various stages from mining to concentrate shipment and tailings storage, the sulphides are exposed to a variety of environments, which under certain conditions of air (oxygen), humidity and temperature can cause them to heat. Since no external heat source is involved, this pyrophoric process is known as spontaneous heating or, more commonly, self-heating. The self-heating of sulphides is associated with oxidation reactions under moist conditions. If the heat generated is greater than the heat dissipated, the sulphides will self-heat and the material temperature will rise. This can make working conditions potentially dangerous as oxygen is consumed from the surrounding air and significant quantities of sulphur dioxide (SO2) can be released (Ninteman, 1978)."

Block cave mining, in its broadest sense, has transitioned from an orebody/rock mass determined method of extraction, to a low-cost and high production mining method that may be applied to any large ore deposit. This inherently means that caving is now required in more complex rock mass conditions where assistive damage, through preconditioning, may be necessary. This requires comprehensive understanding of the geology, and its interwoven relationship with geotechnical parameters, and is made more challenging due to limited exposure in block cave mines. Limited mine development throughout the cave volume equates to a heavy reliance on drilling data in terms of observations, modelling of the mine geology, and collection of geotechnical data. This translates as increased uncertainty of geological and geotechnical models and has potential to impact significantly on the ability to make informed decisions in the design and operation of the cave mine.Modelling of cave propagation behaviour requires a complex, coupled system of draw of material, flow of material through the cave stocks, and propagation of the cave-back assisted by autogenic stress-related breakage of the rock mass, manifested as seismicity. The role of geological features in the process of cave propagation is not well understood and requires evaluation on a mine-specific basis, given the diversity of geological controls/settings of ore deposits and local variability of stress fields.Seismic monitoring systems can elucidate key geological features and domains, as heterogeneous seismogenic activity is observed ahead of the advancing cave-back. The observations made from analysis of seismic monitoring data may have potential to be used as a validation tool for numerical modelling of predicted cave behaviour in similar geological settings (eg next lift/panel).Understanding of the geological structure, at all scales, is critical to optimise the design and operating decisions made in a block cave operation. At present, intermediate-scale structure, anisotropy, mineralogy and model uncertainty may be neglected or under-represented despite their likely significant role in the mechanisms of cave propagation.Insights from an analysis of the Ridgeway Deeps block cave mine are discussed in this paper.CITATION:Murphy, T, Webster, A and Chitombo, G, 2016. "SynopsisThe relationship between niobium content and austenite grain growth has been investigated through hot rolling simulation on a Bähr dilatometer. The effect of delay time between passes during rough rolling in Nbmicroalloyed steels with nitrogen contents typical for electric arc furnace (EAF) melting was studied. The results indicate that the grain growth constants n, Q, and A increase with an increase in Nb content. The activation energy for austenite grain growth Q was found to be in the range of 239 to 572 kJ/mol, the exponential constant n ranged from 2.8 to 6.2, and the material and processing condition constant A from 4.24 × 1012 to 4.96 × 1028, for steels with niobium contents ranging from 0.002% Nb to 0.1% Nb. A general constitutive equation for the prediction of austenite grain growth in these Nb-microalloyed steels under rough rolling conditions has been developed. Good agreement between the experimental and the predicted values was achieved with this constitutive equation.IntroductionGrain refinement has been found to increase both the strength and toughness of steels (Gao and Baker, 1998; Sharma, Lakshmanan, and Kirkaldy, 1984; Seok et al., 2014; Maalekian et al., 2012). It is also known that the austenite grain size directly influences the microstructure, and thus the mechanical properties, of the steel (Maalekian et al., 2012; Yue et al., 2010). Effective grain growth control is reported to be achieved through addition of precipitate-forming elements, such as Nb that, slow down the grain boundary migration through pinning and solute drag mechanisms (Yu et al., 2010; Olasolo et al., 2011; Alogab et al., 2007). Much work has been carried out on austenite grain lsize control by the addition of precipitate-forming elements that have a strong affinity for interstitial elements, such as carbon and nitrogen, which form the dispersed pinning particles to inhibit the austenite grain growth (Alogab et al. 2007; Hodgson and Gibbs, 1992; Nanba et al., 2003; Flores and Martinez, 1997; Rollett, Srolovitz and Anderson, 1989). Austenite grain growth can be described using a conventional or a modelling approach. With conventional approaches (e.g. metallography), in-situ monitoring of austenite grain growth at high temperatures is impossible. Modelling the grain growth behaviour based on available data is the ideal option. To quantitatively describe austenite grain growth therefore requires development of a sound mathematical austenite grain growth equation that accounts for the effects of the varying microalloying elements in inhibiting austenite grain growth. Numerous attempts have been made to develop an empirical model based on the general equation developed by Sellars and Whiteman (1979). Many of these models do not account for the direct effects of the microalloying elements such as Nb in austenite grain growth control [Fu et al., 2011; Wang and Wang, 2008; Wang et al., 2006; Shanmugama et al., 2005; Banerjee et al., 2010; Pous-Romeroa et al., 2013). The current work has considered this limitation, taking into account the direct effect of niobium in grain growth control during thermal processing. This is done by incorporating the initial austenite grain size Do and the microalloying element niobium in the development of a constitutive equation for grain growth prediction in Nb-containing microalloyed steels."

Timely and rapid intervention to underground combustion events (fires, explosions, and spontaneous combustion) is the key to the successful control of the mine atmosphere and restoring of a coal mine to production. The focus of this paper is the utilization of a GAG 3A jet engine system to combat either large out-of-control fires or to render an entire mine inert when access to problem areas is difficult or impossible. This system is based upon a Soviet designed agricultural jet engine which consumes aviation fuel with oxygen (O2) from the intake air and exhausts combustion gases, primarily carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O), along with the nitrogen (N2) from the air and small amounts of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2). The system is designed to approach stoichiometric combustion (ideally, pure burning that scavenges all the oxygen from the intake air). Therefore, these exhaust gases are almost entirely “inert gases”- i.e., gases which do not contribute to, and in fact, can suppress the combustion process due to the lack of oxygen. Other methods to inert mine areas have been used in the US and internationally, but these methods usually use low flow inertisation equipment or methods. Use of these low-flow inertisation equipment and methods has been successful in proactively rendering gob areas inert and has the ability to inert the entire mine workings. Introduction In situ leaching (ISL) is an alternative method of mining uranium from deposits that are low-grade, deeplying, and water-saturated. ISL recovers uranium by transporting fluids through rock rather than by moving rock, a concept the Chinese developed over 2000 years ago for water production. This technique eventually evolved into production systems for oil, gas, sulfur, and salt. More recently, in situ methods have been developed to produce shale oil, gasified coal, geothermal energy, uranium, and copper. ISL uranium operations began in the early 1960s with Sabine Production Co. in south Texas. About the same time, Utah Construction and Mining Co. (Anderson and Richie, 1968) started similar operations in Wyoming&apos;s Shirley Basin. During the 1970s, six commercial operations were started in south Texas, (USBM, 1978) and a number of pilot operations were in various stages of development in Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico. This paper reviews some of the technical and economic aspects of the ISL process and briefly discusses key subsurface engineering functions as¬sociated with well pattern design and operation. While flow characteristics of a deposit are of prime importance, the following information is also needed: Depth, ore grade, total contained metal, ore thickness, flow conductivity (permeability), void space in rock (porosity), mineral type and distribution, natural groundwater flow, and structural features. Solvent selection, which is important to the economic success of the operation, takes these factors into account: Composition, rate of metal solubilization, interaction with gangue minerals, impact on rock permeability, impact on materials of construction, trace metal solubilization, cost, availability, and handling problems. Overview of ISL An ISL operation consists of these functions (Fig. 1): 1. Chemicals to dissolve and maintain uranium in solution are prepared at the surface extraction facility. 2. A set of injection wells forces the solvent into rock pores of fractures using pressure in excess of the deposit&apos;s hydrostatic pressure. 3. Solvent travels through the rock and reacts with uranium minerals to dissolve them. The solvent usually consists of an oxidant and a complexing agent in an acidic or alkaline medium. 4. A set of production wells creates a low-pressure sump where metal-enriched solution is collected for transport to the surface. 5. The enriched solution is processed to recover uranium and to separate the leaching solution for recycling through the system. The economic performance of an in situ operation may be estimated by integrating these related factors: (1) the flow rate of solution processed through the system, (2) rates of fluid injection and production from wells, (3) the rate of mineral solubilization in the liquid phase, and (4) the volume of rock swept by the fluid. As these factors reveal, ISL involves the technical disciplines of petroleum engineering, ore deposit geology, and hydrometallurgical processing. Wellfield Design Just as mineral engineers use drillhole information to plan a conventional mine, in situ engineers use similar information to design a well field. In March 2002 Newcrest Mining Ltd commissioned a 4 Mtpa gold-copper concentrator at its Cadia Valley Operations in New South Wales. This paper presents the design and construction considerations, commissioning and ramp up issues related to start up of the concentrator as well as current performance and future expansion plans. Commissioning of the plant was the culmination of six years of project planning, from discovery of the resource during the Cadia Hill drill out campaign in November 1996 to project implementation and plant operation. Current resource estimates stand at around 50 Mt with an average grade of 2.4 g/t gold and 0.8 per cent copper. At current processing rates the project life is expected to exceed ten years. The processing plant comprises a 9.75 m (32 ft) diameter Fully Autogenous (AG) mill, a single 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter ball mill, pebble crushers, gravity gold recovery circuit and flotation plant. Upgrades to the existing infrastructure and manning requirements at Cadia will be discussed as well as the resultant impacts on operating costs for the operation. The processing plant was expected to deliver 290 000 ounces of gold and 30 000 tonnes of copper in concentrate in its first full year of operation and progress against that goal will be presented.

The Massachusetts Highway Department awarded the Porter Street Outfall Project to the J.M. Cashman Company in November 1991. Timely completion of the Project in one and one half years is critical to the start of the subsequent Third Harbor Tunnel North Approach project. Existing subsurface conditions and the Project&apos;s location at Boston&apos;s Logan International Airport significantly increases the difficulty of construction. The major contractual work involves relocating a reinforced concrete double box culvert supported on a continuous wood pile foundation. This existing culvert crosses and interferes with the future Third Harbor Tunnel North Approach alignment. Two parallel culverts constructed approximately 20 feet from either side of the future Third Harbor Tunnel alignment replace the existing double box culvert structure. Under the original contract design, approximately 3,100 feet of 14 ft. by 15 ft. reinforced concrete culvert is cast in place adjacent to the west side of the Third Harbor Tunnel and is located in the center of the Airport&apos;s main service roadway, Harborside Drive. This culvert is the Porter Street Combined Sewer, PSCS, which handles a combined flow of sewerage from the East Boston community and storm water runoff from Logan Airport. In addition, approximately 2,230 feet of 17 ft. by 15 ft. reinforced concrete culvert is cast in place adjacent to the east side of the Third Harbor Tunnel and is within 20 feet of an active aircraft taxiway and heliport. This culvert is the Bird Island Flats Storm Drain, BIFSD, which handles storm water runoff from the Logan Airport airfield. The existing outfall, on the west side of the Third Harbor Tunnel alignment is to remain in service and is to be connected to the new PSCS and BIFSD culverts. Therefore, a portion of the BIFSD culvert is designed as a bridge to span 128 ft. across the Third Harbor Tunnel excavation during construction.

"OPENING REMARKS Yesterday and today we have heard some very interesting papers on operating matters and some of you are probably wondering what we are now doing talking about Communications in Plant Design. Let me tell you! Before the techniques we have heard being discussed can be used, there has to be a properly operating plant. It is certainly a fact that many mineral processing plants achieve only limited success and a number of them can even be said to be failures. Some of you sitting here are probably living with operating problems that are clue to errors in the design.If the histories of these problem plants are examined, it will be found that in many cases, the necessary skills were available during the period of the plant design. There was extensive operating know¬ledge together with a full range of project expertise. Why then the failures? In a substantial number of cases it can be traced to the old, old problem of communications. As plants get bigger, money costs more and smooth startups become more important, it becomes less and less economic to fix up any design errors during plant operations.During our careers in mineral processing, nearly all of us will be involved in at least one plant design and I feel that it is as well if we understand some of these communication difficulties that can lead to a problem plant. There is little point in us being experts in mineral processing if the knowledge we have acquired doesn't somehow get incorporated into the plant.I would, therefore, like to present this short paper that mentions a few of the significant communication problems that can occur during the design of mining and mineral processing plants, together with some thoughts on answers to these problems."

The Bureau has published much data on sulfur (4, 15, 23)3, most of it dealing with national or international aspects of the sulfur industry. Little information, however, is available on sulfur marketing in specific States or areas, Therefore, the Bureau has conducted a survey of the resources, production, consumption, and economic future of the sulfur and sulfuric acid industry in States of the Central and Southern Rocky Mountain area - Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico - and in the Northern Plains States - North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska, even though these States do not represent an economic or marketing unit. The purpose of this survey is to review the demand for sulfur and primary sulfur compounds that draws upon the natural resources of the region, to discover opportunities for better use of these resources, and also to analyze and evaluate the patterns of consumption, sources of supply, and other factors that affect the demand for these mineral products. While this survey stresses the economic and marketing phases of the industry, a complementary report (32) emphasizes the resources of sulfur in Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona.

Optimized mixer settler designs will now handle total flows of over 6,000 m3/hr.Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a timely and predictable tool for design development. Lightnin has the capability of using numerical analysis methodology to evaluate flow patterns and phase separation. CFD can show performance differences between changes, in mix tanks, in settler geometry, and in liquid depth, against variable flow rates. Understanding the differences allows the development of optimized designs. This paper focuses on the major design components of the mixer settler and how technological advances will lead to further improvements, when designing for today’s largest flow plants.

Gas-liquid contacting in the packed bed is a common operation in metallurgical reactors. Research has shown that, unlike wetting flow, non-wetting liquid flows in the form of discrete droplets or rivulets. Thus, modeling of the liquid phase as a continuum is in contradiction to the observations. Also, for the non-wetting case, continuum models have failed to describe liquid flow path when the liquid source is a point source. The aim of the current work is to put forward a combined Lagrangian-Eulerian approach to model the liquid and gas flow in the packed bed. Liquid is assumed discrete and modeled using a force balance approach. Gas is assumed to be interpenetrating continua and modeled using k-emodel for turbulent flow. Structured packing is assumed and x- ray imaging technique is used to visualize liquid flow lines in the bed. Simulation results for liquid flow path compared with the experiments.

"In preparation for the milling of a new nickel and copper mine ore, Nickel Rim South, Xstrata’s Strathcona Mill is undertaking numerous process improvement projects. Within the grinding circuit, several projects are under development and an automated grinding control strategy, consistent with the operating objectives, was identified as a key requirement. The grinding strategy is to maximize the throughput (quantitative objective) while maintaining the cyclone overflow within specifications (qualitative objective).This paper describes the implementation of a robust grinding control strategy using the existing control system. The implemented controls maintain the cyclone overflow density at the desired target, while continually optimising the rod mill feed rate to allow maximum throughput. This approach has the added benefit of improving the stability of the rougher flotation circuit down stream of the grinding and improving energy efficiency of the rod and primary ball mills. This paper discusses the comparison of the before and after the implementation of results.INTRODUCTIONThe grinding process is a size reduction operation used in the mining industry to liberate the valuable minerals from the gangue. Grinding is one of the most important and expensive processes in a concentrator (Xi-song, 2007; Pomerleau 2000; Najim 1995), often accounting for around half of the total operating costs in base metal concentrators (Wills, 1990), which has led to a focus on development and implementation of control and optimisation strategies. The grinding process prepares the ore for the subsequent concentration step, which for sulphide base metal operations, is predominantly flotation. The performance of the concentration (flotation) is very much determined by the feed characteristics of the slurry coming from grinding. The valuable minerals recovery process in flotation is very much influenced by the grinding process and the liberation of the desired minerals from the gangue minerals (McIvor, 1991).The true objective of grinding is to obtain a proper liberation of the minerals as defined by a particle size distribution referenced typically by d80 (80% passing size of product). Besides achieving the desired mineral d80 size, it is clearly desirable to produce as narrow a size distribution as possible to squeeze the maximum amount of the mineral value into the highest recovery region (McIvor, 1991). This is an important criterion for the mill in economically optimizing the grade and recovery for the concentrate product. It is important not to over or under grind, while keeping the specific comminution energy as low as possible (Nunez, 2005) to achieve the target liberation. In other words, maintain an optimal throughput depending on the ore conditions to the capacity of the grinding mills, while providing the flotation process with a constant and narrow size distribution, at a cut size selected to meet the metallurgical requirements (Bascur, 1991)."

The Bureau of Mines and Old Ben Coal Co. concluded a cost-sharing contract in 1975, the objective of which was to demonstrate the Herrin No. 6 coalbed in southern Illinois can be mined safely by longwall methods. Under the agreement, three longwall panels are to be mined at Old Ben No. 24 mine. A premining investigation laid the groundwork for specifying a roof-support system designed to control hazardous ground. Old Ben Coal Co. and Bureau engineers selected lemiscate-type roof shields. A rock mechanics program and geological mapping provide early warning capability and criteria for future equipment design. The effect of mining on the surface was monitored by a surface survey to develop subsidence-prediction criteria for the Illinois coal basin. The first of the three longwall panels started up in September 1976 and was completed in May 1977. The major adverse condition was the occurrence of limestone concretions, called coal balls, in massive pods. The shields provided adequate roof control even in faulty ground. Operation of the second panel started on August 1, 1977, following panel-to-panel transfer of the equipment. The accident rate was low.

Rehabilitation, reclamation and restoration are all terms used to describe the repair of land after mining. Here, restoration is used to mean restoring the land&apos;s original use, capability or productivity. Effective restoration is dependent on good planning before mining commences and must include a clear definition of post-mining objectives. The physical condition of the land within the mining licence was that of an imperfectly drained soil in permanent pasture, supporting a seasonal supply dairying unit. During the mining process, the soil layers were separated, with the topsoil stockpiled separately. As part of the restoration process, the land was recontoured to encourage surface drainage, with topsoil spread evenly over the recontoured tailings. Low grond pressure machinery was used to minimise soil compaction, with light discing and harrowing used to increase water infiltration. A permanent pasture was sown, with weed species controlled by spraying, both before and after pasture establishment. &nbsp;Soil testing has been used extensively to ensure there were no nutrient deficiencies that good compromise pasture establishment and performance. Controlled grazing practices were used to ensure that the sown pastures became well established.

El presente texto señala la aplicación del sistema de gestión de demanda y consumo de energía eléctrica en la fundición de Southern Perú. El sistema está compuesto por un módulo predictor de demanda eléctrica y un módulo de simulación del sistema eléctrico de la planta. El primero, se construyó utilizando redes neuronales con algoritmos de aprendizaje backpropagation, capaz de pronosticar la evolución horaria de la demanda eléctrica con un porcentaje de error cercano. "A new approach to measure process conditions in flotation cells is presented. Real scale flotation cells in a Zinc circuit are imaged using Outotec LevelSense sensors based on electrical resistance tomography. The latest results from long period plant tests show that the sensors together with FrothControl analysis give new information that correlates well with other process parameters. The sensors can compensate for electrical contact contamination using an automatic calibration technique and they are basically maintenance free. The results indicate that using the LevelSense sensors and FrothControl solution, the process control and optimization can be done automatically, stabilizing and improving the metallurgical performance of the flotation process.INTRODUCTIONThe froth flotation process is widely used in mineral industry for the separation of minerals from low-grade ore slurry. Different property parameters of froth and slurry could be measured to monitor and control the flotation process: air bubble size distribution, flow dynamics, thickness of the froth bed, amount of solids in the froth, etc. Some techniques already exist that can be utilized in studying these important parameters on-line. Examples of the techniques are the high-speed video imaging, simple conductivity probes, ultrasound techniques, floats and pressure transducers (Maldonado et al., 2008). These techniques, however, often suffer from some limitations. For example, the video imaging only gives information from the surface of the froth, simple conductivity probes suffer from contamination and the floats may get stuck and therefore do not give reliable signal for process control and optimization."

The quartz-cassiterite-wolfram veins at the Aberfoyle Tin Mine, north-eastern Tasmania, form a sheeted zone about 200 ft. wide and 1,600 ft. long in slightly contact metamorphosed shales, slates and greywackes, and are associated with a cupola of aplitic granite whose top is about 1,050 ft. below the present surface. Economic mineralization persists from the surface down to a vertical depth of 1,050 ft. to 1,100 ft., dying away in the vicinity of the cupola. Down to the 9-level there is a progressive increase in wolfram content of the veins, and a decline in cassiterite content, with increasing depth.The veins are banded or zoned, with a seivedge of muscovite on the wall. Cassiterite, wolfram and sphalerite occur inside the selvedges, projecting into a core of quartz of varying width. Other sulphides form the central part of some narrow veins, or occur as clots in the quartz. The general sequence of deposition of the ore minerals was: (1) cassiterite, wolfram; (2) arsenopyrite, pyrite, molybdenite; (3) pyrrhotite (in part); (4) blende-group minerals-chalcopyrite, sphalerite, stannite, pyrrhotite (in part)-as solid solutions; (5) galena, tetrahedrite, matildite, native bismuth, scheelite; (6) marcasite and secondary pyrite, magnetite and hematite. The sequence of deposition of the gangue minerals was: (1) fluorine-bearing minerals-muscovite topaz, apatite, triplite, fluorite-more or less contemporaneous with the cassiterite and wolfram;&apos; (2) quartz-contemporaneous with the earlier sulphides; (3) carbonates--contemporaneous with the later sulphides. The stages overlapped somewhat.The composition of the sphalerite and heat treatment experiments with the solid solutions indicate that the blende-group sulphides were deposited at about 6000 C., and cooled rapidly, so that unmixing of the solid solutions was arrested. This accords with the likelihood that the country rock temperature was not above 2000 C. Annealing experiments at between 3500 C. and 6000 C. led to further precipitation from solid solution at the lower temperatures, and to significant segregation by solid diffusion within, a week, indicating that both deposition and cooling of the ore were rapid processes-completed in a matter of days.
