The characteristics of the igneous and metamorphic bedrock, extra-hard and abrasive, of the Guadarrama Tunnels, a bi-tube project of length 28.4 km without any intermediate attack, are first commented upon. Next, a detailed discussion is given of the most relevant aspects of the performance of the four double shield type TBMs. The experience of this leads to various recommendations to be borne in mind in future designs of TBM having to work in rock of similar characteristics.

A constitutive model for rock interfaces based on the principles of static fatigue is proposed. The model is applicable to weak rock or joints with cohesion. Friction and dilation are decreased as plastic work increases. At equilibrium, the creep time increases by one time-step interval, and interface cohesion at each node decreases according to a power function. A constant-load, direct-shear simulation showed that the model is cap- able of mimicking constant-rate and tertiary creep and predicting failure. Tests on core from a coal mine showed constant-rate and, sometimes, tertiary creep, but also weak transitory creep. The cohesion deterioration function may need modification to simulate primary-phase creep. If model parameters are known for a site, the model can predict the onset of tertiary creep and failure. Such predictions can help engineers make better entry design and support decisions, which will reduce the likelihood of roof falls and increase safety for underground miners.

Back injuries account for a high proportion of lost workdays in the mining industry and are a leading cause of disability in mine workers. Two risk factors for low back injuries are manual lifting and whole-body vibration exposure when operating mobile equipment. Recent research has shed light on possible mechanisms through which low back injuries may occur, and the results of these studies can be used to improve the design of lifting tasks and seats to decrease injury risk. This article discusses recent research results and how this knowledge can be leveraged to reduce the risk of low back pain.

"A survey of 925 mineral property transactions worldwide was carried out between 1987 and 2004. These mineral properties with reported Mineral Resources include 457 gold properties, 322 base metal properties, and five platinum group element (PGE) properties. Based on constant Canadian dollars, the results of the survey indicate that:• In general, unit metal values in the ground (e.g. $/oz Au or $/lb Cu) have kept pace with the changes in the respective metal prices during the period of the survey.• A general decrease in unit gold values in the ground has occurred from about $57/oz Au in 1987 to about $11/oz Au in 2002 for Canadian mineral properties, with the exception of a peak of $58/oz Au in 1996.• A similar trend for mineral properties has occurred in the United States, but with lower unit values, in the range from $1/oz Au to $10/oz Au during the last three years of the survey. • Unit metal values in the ground for gold properties in Canada were higher than for those in the rest of the world.• Unit metal values in the ground for copper properties in Canada were in the mid-range compared with other countries in the rest of the world; the United States and Australia were higher and Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Europe were lower than in Canada.• Unit metal values in the ground for zinc properties in Canada were also in the mid-range compared with other countries in the rest of the world; Latin America and Europe were higher and the United States, Australia, and Asia were lower than in Canada.• Unit metal values for nickel properties in Canada were highest compared with other countries in the rest of the world, followed by the United States, Australia, Africa, and Asia.• Gold values in the ground in Canada have ranged from 6% to 14% (with an average of approximately 10%) of the gold price.• The unit values of base metals in the ground have been in the order of 2% of the quoted metal price, during the period of the survey."

Elongates are commonly used as stope support in South African gold and platinum mines. To evaluate the effect of the inherent strength, stiffness and yield variability associated with elongates, a statistical method is presented which addresses and quantifies the support performance at various levels of certainty. The analysis, which is based on a normal distribution, makes use of force-deformation curves determined from multiple laboratory compression tests on the same support type. The applicability of the method is illustrated making use of actual performance capabilities of various types of elongates. In order to ensure a high probability that support units installed underground exceed the standard support performance curve established by means of laboratory tests, the statistical mean of a suite of tests based on the same support type is downgraded. The ?correction factor? is a function of the mean and standard deviation of the test data, as well as the sample size of units deemed to control the local rock mass stability. It is shown that downgraded performance curves based on a high probability (90 to 95percent) of support units exceeding this performance level are suitable to ensure that the design of support systems will in variably meet the design criteria. In the highly discontinuous hangingwall rock mass typically associated with intermediate- and deep-level mining operations, the interaction between adjacent support units is comparatively limited (at the support spacings commonly used). Therefore, the appropriate sample size (n) of the support units controlling the local rock mass stability should be n= 1. In shallow mining conditions, sample sizes of up to n=5 may be warranted, depending on the spacing of joints and other discontinuities in the hangingwall.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted research on the ignition of methane-air mixtures by sparks caused by frictional impact of aluminum alloys on rusted steel at typical coal mine fan speeds. The objectives were to establish the incendivity of aluminum alloys under these conditions, to investigate differences between aluminum alloys, and to evaluate substitute materials for the aluminum-steel combination. With a specially designed apparatus, three commercial aluminum casting alloys and a number of experimental aluminum alloys were tested for incendivity of the frictional impact against rusted steel in flammable methane-air mixtures. All aluminum alloys tested produced some ignitions. Of the experimental alloys, the harder alloys and those containing silicon tended to be more incendive than the others. With the normal experimental conditions, constructional steel, stainless steel, brass, and plastic did not cause ignition of methane-air mixtures in frictional impact against rusted steel. Some ignitions occurred with constructional steel at high speed in more flammable gas mixtures enriched with oxygen. From these findings, it is suggested that constructional material combinations other than the aluminum-steel combustion would minimize this inc endive hazard. A detailed description is given of previous research, and comparison is made with present results where appropriate.

As virgin coal reserves dwindle, more and more mines are being opened in areas with previous mining. As addressed in this conference before, there are solutions available for designing mines extracting coal from reserves with known underground workings above or below the target seam. Often times, however, mining begins with limited knowledge of the underground workings. Even with careful planning, the proposed design has limited success because the ?facts? as presented during planning turn out not to be as accurate as one would like. At National Coal?s Mine #14, mining the Walnut Mountain seam, after driving the main entries in some 34 crosscuts, it was found during routine mine examinations that the pillars had separated from the roof in a few areas of the mains. Immediate roof conditions proved to be sound but questions arose concerning the stability of the main roof and floor. Core tests were done to better determine the rock strengths and characteristics. The paper presents the ideology used to tackle the effects of mining over old works in an operating coal mine. This paper discusses the analysis of the symptoms observed and the steps taken to ensure that this pillar separation was caused by the underlying old workings and that the separation was expected and controllable.

Investigations of world wide coal face strata control practice, the study of theoretical calculations and detailed engineering analysis have been combined to design and select a powered roof support suitable for use in conjunction with the extraction of 4.5-m (14.7- ft) of the 7.5-m (24.6-ft) thick Warwickshire Thick Coal Seam. The interface between geotechnical criteria and engineering design has been closely considered along with the following 3 important factors: Firstly, the need to further improve strata control and operational characteristics whilst producing a wall integrated overall face design. Secondly, to enable the supports to be rapidly transported from face to face in roadways driven at the minimum size for operational requirements. Finally, to provide hydraulic power, automatic control and monitoring systems which will improve operations reduce manpower requirements and improve management information. Clear design requirements were determined in order to allow selection on a commercial basis. A method of tendering is described with the subsequent analysis and selection process. In the event oversupply of coal in the UK resulted in the order not being placed. Brief consideration has been given to supports suitable for reserves to be mined In a few year's time where there is potential for extraction well in excess of 4.5-m (1 4.74.

A two-phase program evaluated commercial proximity warning devices and then served to design and develop an automatic electrostatic field strength measurement device with improved performance. The Phase I program consisted of test and evaluation of three commercial proximity warning devices, all of which operate on the principle of electrostatic field intensity measurement for determining proximity to high voltage power lines. Performance testing of these devices utilized full-scale cranes and power line systems and a scale model facility. The evaluation results were reported in the Phase I report entitled "Evaluation of Proximity Warning Devices" dated 22 February 1980. Under the Phase II program, a microproressor-based data acquisition system was designed and developed to collect and measure field strength at distributed points around the crane boom. This unit (referred to as the Distributed Sensor AC Electrometer) measures the field strength about a crane boom using 17 distributed sensors. Keyboard control is provided for the equipment operator. Measured field strength values are displayed on a line printer and recorded on magnetic tape. Laboratory testing of this unit demonstrated performance characteristics and field strength measurement accuracy within the design goals. A Phase III measurements program is proposed using the AC Electrometer to map the field strength contours about power line configurations.

A 16 m by 4.7 m by 24.5 m (52 ft by 15.5 ft by 80.5 ft) underground ore bin was constructed at an 810 m (2660 ft) overburden depth in poor quality, faulted and altered intrusive rocks at Molycorp's block caving molybdenum mine. Geological engineering incorporated detailed structural mapping, rock quality classification, in-situ stress field determinations, numerical stress and failure analysis, and convergence monitoring. The ore bin was mined by conventional methods from the top down and utilized a bored raise for mucking. The initial ground support of rock bolts, lightweight steel sets, and reinforced concrete was later supplemented with an array of 6, 12 and 21 m tensioned, grouted rock bolts when wall closure was noted in the upper ore bin area. The supplementary support was optimized by computer analysis and monitoring.

Sandsloot open pit is situated on the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex, 250 km north east of Johannesburg, South Africa. Sandsloot is currently the largest open pit platinum mine in the world and is one of six potential open pits in the area. The geotechnical strength properties of the Platreef have posed significant mining and processing challenges to the PPRust operation since inception in 1992. In order to optimize the whole business as opposed to isolated cost centres a mine to mill initiative was embarked upon in 1997. Initial work focused on ore characterization and an entire suite of data was collected for each rock type. This included mineralogy, geochemistry, geotechnical, blast ability indices, as well as metallurgical strength data. The second phase involved the clear definition of customer requirements, namely the optimum performance criteria for the plant and mining departments. This involved extensive field trials and data capture to measure the interaction and influence of the mine to mill value chain. Once the design targets were defined, a 3D geotechnical model was constructed to ensure that the targets were consistently achieved. The model is very similar to an ore reserve model; however, it is populated with geotechnical, metallurgical and blast index data. Through software queries the appropriate blast powder factor for each mining block can be obtained, thereby ensuring the correct fragmentation is blasted for the plant and mining operation. The initiative has delivered significant results showing improvements across the mine to mill value chain. These include increased loading rates, reduced electricity and crushing consumables, as well as higher plant throughput. Additionally, the initiative has benefited both brownfield and greenfield projects on the PPRust operation

ALTHOUGH it has been a matter of about one hundred years since the idea of the internal-combustion engine entered the mind of the inventor, the practical application of its use was not attained till 1860, when Lenoir produced an engine similar to the ordinary highpressure steam engine, with the valves arranged to admit the explosive mixture and the discharge of the exhaust gases. In this case no attempt was made to compress the gas before ignition, as it was then considered that the explosion under these conditions had a detrimental effect, inasmuch as it would act as a sudden blow to the working parts. Indeed, he went so far as to inject steam and water sprays to reduce the explosion.Under these conditions the consumption of gas was exceedingly high-about 106 cub. ft. of coal gas per b.h.p. per hour but the mechanical effect showed that the engine ran in every respect as smoothly and quietly as in best steam-engine practice.The extravagant consumption of this engine was clearly pointed out at the time by Gustav Schmidt in a paper before the German Society of Engineers, wherein he states :-" The results would be far more favourable if compression pumps, worked from the engine, compressed the cold air and cold gas to three atmospheres before entrance into the cylinder. By this means a greater expansion and transformation of heat is possible."

The Chairman opened the session by wondering why so few papers on Maritime Structures had been received for this conference. Perhaps because the marine environment is so hostile and the access so difficult that engineers tend to be more prudent about new ideas and designs. Dennis Waite noted the number of grey hairs in the room - grey hairs which could be equated with experience gained the hard way. He hoped that this experience would be passed on in the discussion period of this session. The Chairman was delighted to welcome two authors from China, Mr Sun and Mr Liang. He was most grateful on behalf of the conference for their efforts both in preparing their papers and for being able to present them. He regretted that Messrs Noce and Fedolino were not able to present their paper and then welcomed Mr Christensen from Denmark who would present the first paper.

Titanium and Zirconium Industries Pty. Ltd. separates rutile and zircon from heavy mineral concentrate recovered from sand dunes on the east coast of North Stradbroke Island, Queensland. Separation plant feed is delivered to Dunwich, on the west coast, by a seven mile aerial ropeway traversing the island. Mining and concentration is effected by two floating dredge-concentrators now operating on the beach 31; miles from the aerial ropeway terminal. Heavy mineral concentrate is transported hydraulically from the dredges to the ropeway through a 6 in. pipeline. Six pumps in series deliver 24 ton/hr of dry solids in a pulp containing 13 per cent solids. For maximum economy the transfer pumping system is controlled deliberately to cause transportation in the zone of incipient settlement of solids, ieat velocities below the limit deposit velocity for the particular pipe diameter, pulp density, and specific gravity of solids. Automatic density control, based on a combination of power consumption and pipeline pressure, eliminates the danger of plugging the line but periodic flushing is necessary to remove gradual accumulation of solids in the bottom of the pipe. After 15 months operation the pipeline was descaled with hydrochloric acid to remove severe blistering with rust nodules, regrowth of which is now prevented by continuous injection of inhibitors. After transporting 100,000 tons of heavy mineral the average wear on the steel portion of the pipeline was 0·01 in. and indications are that wear on the asbestos cement portion is less.DESCRIPTION OF OPERATIONSGeographyTitanium & Zirconium Industries Pty. This paper describes measurements of current and voltage done on submerged arc furnaces. The aim is to focus on and attempt to separate from one another the electric arc current and the current bypassing the arc through the charge. Toward this goal two measurement campaigns on AC-arcs burning on coke beds are ac-counted for. The first was done on a 150 kVA pilot furnace at SINTEF in Trondheim Norway, and the second one was done on a 48 MVA industrial furnace run by Icelandic Alloys in Iceland. The measurements were compared to simulations employing an advanced MFD arc model. The main results are that a coke bed does not necessarily behave as a linear conductor. However the warmer chemically transformed part of an operating Si-metal or FeSi furnace probably exhibits linear behaviour and passes a considerable fraction of the phase current, perhaps on some operating conditions, as much as 50%.

The proliferations of media sources and non-profits organizations in Ghana have put the negative impacts of mining on the ?spot?; this has resulted in public outcry about mining. Although, the gold mining industry has responded by implementing several voluntary measures to ensure sustainable mineral development, these critics label such measures as ?green wash?. In this study, a content analysis of newspaper articles of the Ghana Web Database was carried out after the collection of a total of approximately 900 newspaper articles from it. The data were statistically analyzed to chronologically examine the main media view points and the changing perception of mining issues as reported by private and public media. The results showed government, mining industry (Gold), illegal miners and non-profit & community groups as the main media view points and total of twenty-eight related gold mining sustainability issues. The findings of this study could be used by the gold mining companies to improve upon the communications of their unknown sustainable mineral development measures and to design effective communications and education programs for the public.

Construction of the Boddington Mine 130 km (81 miles) southeast of Perth, is about 89 percent complete. When the $2.9-billion development is finished, it will be the largest gold mine in Australia, producing 31 t/a (1 million oz/year), according to project majority owner Newmont Mining. Newmont?s acting regional group executive for Asia Pacific, Philip Stephenson, told a gold conference in Australia that the project would be ?the biggest thing for Newmont this year.? The project has been in the works for more than 10 years, but because of a three-sided ownership and fluctuating gold prices, it struggled to get started. However, Newmont is set to become the full owner of the project and is moving ahead on the low-grade project. ?We are targeting annual production of 31 t/a (1 million oz/year) for each of Boddington?s first five years. When it is in full production, Boddington will be the largest gold mine in Australia,? Stephenson said. ?The mine?s costs applicable to sales will be around US$9.64/g (US$300/oz) and that puts Boddington into the bottom quartile of the global cost curve. ?Strategically for Newmont, Boddington coming on-line will improve Newmont?s overall global geopolitical risk profile as it delivers greater exposure to an AAA-rated country.? Boddington has a projected mine life of 20 plus years. It has current total reserves of 622 t (20 million oz) and rising. Stephenson said Boddington has the largest reserve base of all gold projects in production or those that are about to go into production in A-rated countries or better. And it will be an important asset for many years to come. Newmont will acquire the remaining 33 percent share held by AngloGold Ashanti in a deal that should be concluded in the next two months. Salt slag is a waste product produced by the recycling of aluminum. In most European countries (e.g. Austria, Germany) the landfill disposal of this waste is forbidden because the slag contains soluble salts and these represent a potential source of pollution to the surface and groundwater. Additionally, consisting metal and some compounds in the salt slag can react with water and resulting from this, noxious gases are generated. The recovery of useful materials from these wastes is accordingly both environmentally necessary and economically feasible. This study describes a complete recycling-process for the salt slag, which includes a leaching-cristallization-process to obtain the oxidic residue, a pyrometallurgical-step to clear the oxidic residue and finally an extensive characterization of the achieved products. Due to the increasing price of raw materials, the utilization of the oxidic residue into commercial products has been investigated and application possibilities will be discussed.
