During the last two decades, China has expanded its iron and steel industry very quickly, from less than 100 Mt/a steel production to over 700 Mt/a. It caused big increases in both domestic iron ore production and imported iron ore quantities year by year. The mode of iron ore supply has changed from almost all domestic supply to major tonnes of imported ore plus domestic ore supply. Over 200 blast furnaces with volumes larger than 1000 m3 each have been built and put into operation. Sinter machines have been enlarged quickly. There are now 135 sinter machines with =200 m2 sintering area each. Pellet production increased from 11.94 Mt in 1999 to 210 Mt in 2011, resulting from rapidly increasing domestic concentrate supply and rapid development of the grate-kiln process. The typical ferrous burden constitution is high basicity sinter plus pellets plus lump. The pellet proportion increased and the sinter proportion decreased gradually. A lot of technical improvements, like deep bed sintering, sintering with a high ratio of limonite, composite sintering, pellet process optimisation, a high ratio of hematite in pelletisation, blast furnace operation with low-grade ferrous burdens and hazardous element control, etc have been made to enhance iron burden quality and to reduce hot metal cost. Chinese iron and steel production is expected to increase slightly in the next few years. Its overcapacity should be controlled effectively. Given the variations of iron ore supply, pellet production will keep progressing in terms of production scale and pellet quality, the sintering process will be improved further by various measures to utilise different ores efficiently, and ferrous burden constitution will be optimised continuously to realise the lowest cost of hot metal production.CITATION:Sha, Y and Wang, Z, 2013. "In the past decade, there have been many developments in processing of nickel/copper sulfide ores. Improved pentlandite/pyrrhotite flotation selectivity with the use of new reagents, fine regrinding and Redox measurement (control) has led to increased pyrrhotite rejection and thus higher concentrate grades. Flash flotation has increased overall nickel and associated precious group metal recoveries. Recovery of both fine and coarse particles has been improved through an understanding of flotation cell hydrodynamics. The separation of copper from nickel in such ores has seen a similar level of development. From the late 80s to very recently, the use of flotation columns, the use of pyrrhotite depressing reagents and the improved understanding of the complex mineralogy of chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite have considerably increased copper / nickel separation efficiency. Copper concentrate with more than 30% copper and less than 0.5% nickel grade is now obtainable at 80-85% copper recovery from mill feed compared to 70-75% copper recovery with 30% copper and 1% nickel grade only a few years ago. Improved copper / nickel separation in milling operations has the potential to substantially improve the processing of the resulting concentrates and thus the overall return from the extraction of nickel and copper from sulfide ores.INTRODUCTIONNickel metal by itself or in alloys with other metals and materials makes a significant contribution to modern society. The relatively high price that nickel commands compared to other base metals is a reflection of the fact that, although abundant in the universe, nickel is sparingly distributed in the earth’s crust. There are two types of nickel deposits that are currently being exploited: complex sulfide ores and lateritic oxide ores. Lateritic contain no copper but in sulfide deposits, nickel– bearing minerals, principally pentlandite (Pn, [Ni,Fe]8S9), some millerite (NiS) and violarite ([Ni,Fe]S) are often found in association with copper-bearing minerals, mainly chalcopyrite (Cp, CuFeS2) and cubanite (CuFe2S3). The copper content of such ores can vary considerably from as high as 5-8% (in some Sudbury basin ores) to as low as 0.1% (in ores mined by Western Mining at Mount Keith, Western Australia and by Inco in Thompson, Manitoba). The valuable minerals Pn and Cp are almost invariably found associated with pyrrhotite (Po, Fe7S8) which along with nonsulphide rock has to be rejected to tails in the primary milling stage. The bulk concentrate from the primary stage is then treated to depress Pn and float Cp. A complete Cu/Ni separation at the mill would be highly desirable but this is not possible because of locking between a small fraction of the valuable minerals. As a result, Cu/Ni separation has to be carried out both during milling and during refining of the matte following smelting. At Inco, Jinchuan and in Norilsk, a chalcocite / heazlewoodite separation is made by flotation following slow cooling of the matte. In the present Sudbury Inco operations, Cu/Ni separation has not been conducted at the mill since 1991 and all Cu/Ni separation takes place at the matte processing plant. Because of the rising ratio of Cu to Ni in the ore, this strategy is under review and this paper describes some recent studies of circuits in preparation for possible installation of a copper / nickel separation circuit at Inco’s Clarabelle Mill in the Sudbury area."

The characterization of platinum group minerals (PGMs) from concentrator flotation circuits provides valuable information towards understanding PGM recovery under given milling and flotation conditions. Additional mineralogical characterization also provides information on ore variability, which may affect recovery. Considering the low grades involved, automated scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterization of PGMs has enabled relatively quick analyses, compared with older, time consuming and less accurate optical microscopy methods. Over the years, parameters, such as species, size distribution, liberation, gangue and base metal sulfide (BMS) associations, have been used to characterize the PGMs in a process mineralogical context, to aid metallurgical interpretation. This paper considers whether flotation indices determined for PGMs can be empirically validated, using initial results from analysis of PGMs in a concentrate bank from a South African concentrator treating UG2 ore from the western limb of the Bushveld Complex. The aim is to determine whether floatability is adequately described by these parameters, or whether other mineralogical factors must be considered when assessing PGM floatability, and hence accounting for recovery vs. losses to tails. The data obtained to date, show that flotation parameters (including liberation index, BMS/gangue relationships and size distribution) have merits where large changes in PGM concentration occur, as observed in the first four cells of the concentrate bank. Larger data sets, however, are required to assess floatability, particularly where concentrate cell grades are similar, as observed in the last six cells of the concentrate bank. Furthermore, the floatability indices could be enhanced by the incorporation of selected associated gangue mineral information, chief amongst these being the content and mode of occurrence of naturally floatable talc and associated orthopyroxene.

The Sutong Bridge across the lower Yangtze River in China will have, when completed, the longest span (1,088 m) and the highest towers (306 m) of any cable stayed span in the world. The foundations for this record setting span will also be record setting. They are located in water depths exceeding 30 m with maximum flows exceeding 3 m/sec. The soil at the site of the main pylons consists of layers of silty sands and silty clays extending to bed rock at 270 m below river elevation. This paper describes the innovative methods used by the team of foundation designers and constructors to support this record setting bridge at this very challenging site. This paper covers three specific topics related to the foundations of the Sutong Bridge: ? Design and construction of the 131 drilled shafts (2.8/2.5 m diameter and 114/117 m long) under each of the two main pylons, including the post-grouting of all drilled shaft tips. ? Design and construction of the scour protection for the two main pylons. ? Construction methods used to construct the waterline pile caps (113.8 m by 48.1 m by 13.3 m deep) under each pylon.

The North-South Bypass Tunnel is a new $AUD1.5 billion underground traffic route in Queensland, Australia, a project of the Brisbane City Council. The tunnel is approximately 5.2 km long, bypassing the Central Business District, and is adjacent to and below major buildings and services. Road tunnel alignment issues include the complex southern connections to the Pacific Motorway and the design of ramps to the east and the north. A review of road tunnel alignment criteria and accident data for Australian and overseas tunnels, similar to the proposed NSBT, are discussed. The key findings of this review lead to a rationalization of the traditional tunnel cross sectional width allocation. The road alignment design elements adopted for the NSBT are also discussed. The NSBT route crosses beneath the Brisbane River. Geotechnical investigations and hydrogeological modelling are described. The crossing has a fundamental impact on the alignment and the tunnelling methods. The tunnelling methods to be adopted and the tunnel support are described. The geotechnical investigations and hydrogeology analysis culminate in the selection of a single shielded TBM for the reference design. These outcomes are related to complex issues of hydrogeology and contaminated groundwater. These are discussed in detail.

The Deep Mixing Method is a process whereby a rotary drilling machine mechanically drills a constant diameter hole while cement slurry is injected into the soil at high pressure. The process combines state of the art construction techniques merging mechanical and hydraulic mixing energies at the tool bit. The result is a soil-cement column of engineered strength, consistency and dimension. Whereby the soil cement column formation process is controlled by a computerised device, the result is a speedy installation, thorough mixing, and a high degree of control, repeatability and documentation.

Formation of gold-bearing veins in Otago Schist was intimately linked to the structural evolution of the schist belt. The currently-exploited Macraes gold deposit formed in a regional scale shear zone during latemetamorphic uplift of the schist belt. Further exploration for this type of deposit will be facilitated by an increased understanding of the late-metamorphic structural evolution of the schist belt. To this end, a three-dimensional cross section through the Otago Schist has been drawn using structural data gathered at outcrops in a 20 - 40 km wide transect across central Otago. This is the first continuous detailed structural section to be drawn through the belt. The section spans an area from Textural Zone 1 metagreywacke of the Torlesse terrane in the northeast through TZ 4 schist in the central region and across the Caples-Torlesse boundary to Textural Zone 3 schist of the Caples terrane in the southwest. Two different late-metamorphic structural generations are identified in this section: the long-recognised Manorburn Generation, and a new æPoolburn GenerationÆ. The location of the Caples-Torlesse boundary has been refined on this transect by field mapping combined with whole rock geochemistry.

This cost bibliography, covering the period from January through December 1960, is a continuation of the series which began with the publication of Information Circular 7516 in October 1949. It is also the second report in the series to be prepared as a cooperative effort by the Bureau of Mines and the American Association of Cost Engineers. The cooperative agreement between the two groups provides for the publication of an annual bibliography with the work load involved in the preparation shared equally. The purpose of the present study is to increase the safety of explosive storage. This was accomplished by: a) review of the histories of recent and past magazine explosions to define causes and trends; b) observation of present-day explosive storage conditions and practices at active mines; c) examination of existing Federal regulations on explosive storage to determine whether they address all conceivable safety problems, whether they contain redundant or obsolete standards, and whether their intent is clearly stated; d) recommendation, for safety improvements and for revision and clarification (if necessity) of governmental regulations. Magazine explosions are rare. A recent increase in magazine explosion frequency must be attributed to a large increase in deliberate (criminal or malicious mischief) explosions. Fires of various origins account for the remaining explosions of the past decade. During 1884-1926 several lightning-generated explosions occurred in non-metal magazines, but none recently. It appears that the contents of a well-constructed, metal magazine are immune to direct lightning strikes, regardless of whether the magazine is grounded or not grounded. Grounding a metal magazine cannot be harmful, but it may well be superfluous. Magazines were observed at 34 widely separated mines and storage problems were discussed with personnel at these mines. In general, storage conditions and practices were found to be satisfactory. Usually, only small quantities of explosives are stored on mine property since most explosives are brought in by suppliers when needed. MSHA and BATF standards on explosive storage appear to cover safety aspects adequately. However, certain revisions are recommended to clarify some of these standards and to reduce inconsistencies in their enforcement.

"This paper discusses how Bald Mountain Gold Mine (Ely, NV) dramatically reduced mercury production by treating process solutions with a liquid reagent based on organic sulfide chemistry. Cherokee Chemical Co. Inc. (Vernon, CA) markets this reagent as UNR 81 1A.A summary of the bench tests comparing various reagents is given. The ensuing plant trial is discussed and successful mercury removal results are presented. Data is presented to show that early removal of mercury in the process reduces the amount of mercury collected at retort. Data is also presented to show that use of this reagent does not reduce gold recovery. Plant trial treatment costs are discussed. Finally, the potential of this technology to substantially reduce closure costs as compared to traditional mercury removal options is discussed.INTRODUCTIONBald Mountain Mine produces gold. Mercury is a costly by-product of gold production because no revenue is generated from mercury. Traditionally, mercury leaches out with gold and follows the gold throughout the processing circuit until it is eventually condensed and collected at Retort. Minimizing or eliminating mercury production minimizes worker health and safety risks, minimizes environmental liability, and reduces costs. In the long term, minimizing mercury production will make mine closure easier and less costly.Bald Mountain Mine dramatically reduced mercury production by treating process solutions with liquid reagents called UNR 811 and UNR 811A. Several reagents were bench tested before proceeding with a plant trial. The reagent complexes the mercury to form an insoluble organic sulfide precipitate. In independent tests, the precipitate passed acid mobilization tests and is considered stable."

Nickel-bearing ores in North-east Dundas have been described by A. McIntosh Reid1 as occurring at the margins of narrow dykes of gabbro, norite, peridodite and pyroxenite, which are intrusive into the Dundas series of slates, quartzites and breccias. They occur chiefly in the neighbourhood of the Five Mile, near Zeehan, as small, narrow ore-bodies which are mostly less than 100 ft. in length.The ores are massive sulphides containing pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, pyrite and the nickel sulphide, pentlabdite.A less common nickel-bearing mineral, gersdorffite, has been recently found in an adit, which is marked on Reid's geological plan of Dundas as the Hecla mine, 30 chains south of the crossing of the North-east Dundas tramway, over the Great Northern Creek, and at an, elevation of about 350 ft. above the tramway. The occurrence is in a lode traversing the Dundas slates and quartzites, and is situated, according to Reid's plan, about 20 chains beyond the northern extremity of a narrow basic dyke which is continuous for a distance of two miles in a south-westerly direction.The mine eonsists of a prospecting adit following the course of a lode for about 275 ft. in a direction a little west of south. The low values of the lode are indicated by a bulk sample from a shallow winze about 100 ft. from the entrance which is reported by Reid to contain:

"Bubble surface area flux (Sb) is the surface area of bubbles per unit time per unit cross-sectional area of flotation machine. The units are: (m2 bubble surface/s)/(m2 cell) or s -1. For bubbles of mean size db (m), s b = 6-Qg/A db where Qg is the gas rate (m3/s), and A the cell cross-section (m'). This parameter is now receiving wide attention as the possible key machine variable in flotation diagnosis and modelling. The concept is described and the potential use of sb is illustrated by work on flotation columns and mechanical cells. In column flotation of recycled paper, the dependence of ink recovery on s b was the same regardless of size of column or type of sparger. In mechanical cells, it has been established that the rate constant is related to Sb independent of impeller type.The use of s b is limited by the problem of measurement, primarily that of estimating db. A prototype probe designed to estimate db (and hence sb) based on conductivity measurements is described. Exploratory work with the probe in a mechanical cell suggests the promise of making estimation of s b routine.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is the result of interaction among variables associated with the feed particles, chemistry and the machine (flotation cell). Trying to isolate the effects of each aids in process diagnosis and is at the centre of attempts to model flotation. The machine variables that have been investigated include the air flow number, the power number and specific power (Harris, 1976). None have survived as the basis for predicting flotation response perhaps because they did not include directly the properties of the bubble swarm (or dispersion). Recently, Gorain (1 997) explored the relationship between the flotation rate constant and various ""gas dispersion"" parameters notably: superficial air rate (Jg = Qg/A, where Qg is the volumetric gas rate and A is cross-sectional area of cell), bubble size (db), gas holdup (Eg, i.e., the volumetric fraction of a cell occupied by gas) and bubble surface area flux (sb = 6.Jg/db). Of them all, Gorain et al. (1997) conclude that the latter, the surface area flux, correlated best with the flotation rate constant. This concept was adopted from column flotation where it was used to estimate, among other factors, the maximum amount of gas that could be injected (Finch and Dobby), 1990). Let's start by reviewing the concept. Following that some examples of where the concept has been applied will be described to illustrate the current interest and finally we will consider how to measure the surface area flux."

The purpose of this symposium is to challenge industry to better air classification, and as a first step toward fulfillment, to spotlight three fairly recent, aerodynamically designed, highly efficient air classifiers. This discussion does not intend to imply that present practice is bad. Actually, when present air separators are used for the jobs for which they were originally designed, they give high production and uniform operation, with a minimum of maintenance. The customers of nonmetallic mineral pigment producers, however, are making increasing demands for finer products, such as 99.9 pct -20µ, which appears to be beyond the economic capabilities of standard air separators industrially used over the last 10 to 30 years. Here is an actual example. A 10-ft diam pebble mill is in closed circuit with a conventional 12-ft diam centrifugal air separator, grinding 20-mesh wollastonite to a series of fine grades up to 99.97 pct - U.S. No. 325 mesh (44µ). Fig. 1 shows variations in fineness of mill discharge (or air separator feed), recycle for regrinding (or air separator tails), and product as measured by a wet rotating sieve test. For example, when the mill is turning out a product 80 pct -325, the mill discharge or separator feed is 30 pct -325, and the coarse tailings or recycle is only 5 pct -325. Hence 25 pct of the 30 pct available is accepted as product. This is efficient separation, and the ratio of recycle to feed is only about 2: 1. How- ever, to make a product testing 99.97 pct -325 the separator feed is 62 pct -325 and the coarse tailing 60 pct -325. In this case the recycle ratio is about 13: 1 and the economic limit to produce fineness has been substantially reached with this given equipment and process arrangement.

In 1986 the Bureau of Mines conducted a probability sample survey, Mining Industry Population Survey, to measure such employee characteristics as occupation; principal equipment operated; work location at the mine; present job, present company, and total mining experience; job-related training during the last 2 years; age; sex; race; and education. The population estimates are necessary to properly analyze the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) injury (includes illness and fatality data) statistics; that is, to compare and contrast injury rates for various subpopulations in order to identify those groups that are exhibiting higher than average injury rates. This report uses the survey's results to characterize the U.S. sand and gravel mining workforce from March through September 1986. Similar reports have been prepared for the metallic, stone, and nonmetallic mining industries, as well as for the entire metal and nonmetal mining (includes metallic, stone, sand and gravel, and nonmetallic industries) sector and the coal mining sector.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Sea floor hydrothermal activity in the Okinawa Trough is considered a modern analog to ancient Kuroko-type volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits. Recent scientific drilling projects at active hydrothermal fields have enabled us to conduct comparative studies on hydrothermal clay minerals between ancient and modern systems. Zonal distributions of clay minerals below the sea floor of an active hydrothermal field have been revealed, which is represented by the distinctive assemblage of clay minerals. Zone 1 consists mainly of montmorillonite and sometimes of kaolinite; Zone 2 consists of chlorite and chlorite-smectite mixed-layer mineral; and Zone 3 is represented by the co-occurrence of illite and chlorite, from shallow to deep. This zonal distribution is likely to be in accordance with that reported previously for the Kuroko-type ore deposit. Similarities are also recognised in chemical compositions of illite and chlorite, which are both abundant clay minerals in the vicinity of the ore deposit. While illite would be formed by interaction with the hydrothermal ore fluid, the formation of Mg-rich chlorite is attributed to Mg metasomatism caused by the involvement of sea water. Further studies, especially focusing on interactions between fluid and solid phases, would significantly promote our understanding of dynamic processes for the formation of VMS depositsCITATION:Ishibashi, J and Miyoshi, Y, 2015. "Poor Pb-Zn selectivity during Pb flotation in laboratory tests on a Mississippi Valley-type Pb-Zn ore was traced to apH effect. In the pH range, 9.5 to 11.0 sphalerite floated readily without copper activation. Compared to sphalerite flotation with copper activation this procedure gave equivalent selectivity but reduced flotation rate.Possible mechanisms of this sphalerite flotation without copper activation are discussed. Activation by Fe(OH)2 is suggested, the Fe- + ions being derived from superficial oxidation of pyrite in the ore. IntroductionGalena and sphalerite commonly occur together. A typical procedure, using xanthate collectors, is to float the galena first, at pH - 8, followed by flotation of sphalerite after activation with copper (II) sulphate at pH - 10 (to depress pyrite).Flotation tests following this procedure in an undergraduate laboratory course with a Pb-Zn ore from Polaris failed to achieve consistent selective flotation of galena. Occasionally a considerable amount of sphalerite, even though unactivated with CUSO4, floated. This was traced to accidentally high pH. A systematic study was carried out which revealed that sphalerite floated readily in the pH range 9.5 to 11.0 without activation by CuSO4 This paper describes the results of the study and discusses a possible mechanism of this flotation of sphalerite."
