Titanium bearing resources can selectively be chlorinated at temperatures below 200°C if the Ti02 in the feed is nitrided before chlorination. However, the nitriding reaction is highly endothermic, requires highly reducing conditions, is only thermodynamically favourable at elevated temperatures, and is affected by mass and heat transfer restrictions. At the required processing conditions, problems might also be experienced with sintering and with melting of slag forming components in the raw materials. A test programme was undertaken to study the effects of raw material type, temperature, gas composition, bed depth, carbon to raw material ratio and residence time in order to simulate conditions required for scaling up a nitriding process. In contrast to previous experience with low-grade titanium-bearing slag containing about 30% Ti02, ilmenite and chlorinateable slag do not form melting phases under the studied nitriding conditions and hardly sintered at all. Both feed materials can readily be nitrided with conversions in excess of 90% at temperatures around 1300°C and using bituminous coal as reducing agent with fixed carbon in excess of 1.1 times the stoichiometric requirement. The conversion decreases as the bed depth of the feed material increases and the N2/CO ratio in the gas decreases. Analysis of the relative rates of mass and heat transfer into the reacting beds of ilmenite and slag showed that the heat transfer rates are more limiting than the mass transfer rates. In order to increase the throughput that can be achieved in a kiln, it would be necessary to take special measures to enhance the heat transfer rates into the mass of reacting material. One such a measure is to pre-form the mass of reacting material into thin-walled, hollow brick shapes prior to introducing it into a kiln. Depending on bed depth, temperature and N2/CO ratio, required residence times in the high temperature zone of the kiln can vary between about 6 and 10 hours. It is known from soluble salt flotation practice that the K, Mg double salts of kainite (KClMgSO43H2O), and carnallite (KClMgCl26H2O) are difficult to float and must be converted to other salts such as schoenite (K2SO4MgSO46H2O) and sylvite (KCl) in order to recover potash values. The flotation characteristics of these double salts have now been confirmed in some detail by carefully controlled laboratory experiments with both cationic and anionic collectors. The experimental results are discussed in view of recent experimental findings regarding the flotation characteristics of simple salts, in which the flotation response was shown to be determined by the interfacial water structure and whether the salt could be considered to be a water structure maker or a water structure breaker. The same approach can be use to explain the flotation response of the potassium double salts ; schoenite, kainite, and carnallite. In addition, the sign of the surface charge of schoenite (K2SO4MgSO46H2O), was determined as a function of pH from nonequilibrium electrophoretic mobility measurements. Schoenite appears to exhibit three charge reversals (CR) which can be explained based on surface hydrolysis reactions. The flotation behavior of schoenite is further considered based on solution chemistry calculations, electrophoretic mobility measurements, and microflotation results.

"Pressure leaching is an option for copper recovery from chalcopyrite. Leaching takes place at high temperatures and pressures in the presence of an oxidising agent. This work shows how the performance of pressure leaching circuits may be improved by optimising the configuration of autoclaves and the heat-removal method. The objective was achieved by creating an autoclave model by combining mass balances, energy balances and population balances. A base-case circuit consisting of a single autoclave was chosen, and this base case was compared with options for increasing capacity by adding more autoclaves to the circuit. These capacity–increase options include circuits in which the additional autoclave is added in parallel, in series and in series with thickening between the two autoclaves. The copper extraction, productivity and cooling requirements for these options are compared. The series circuit with inter-stage thickening has the highest extraction and productivity, however, the cooling duty in the first autoclave is high. In addition to comparing circuit options, three options for heat removal were investigated: cooling coils, quench water and flash recycling. The flash-recycle option results in the highest copper extraction, and the quench-water option gives the lowest copper extraction. INTRODUCTION Background Copper sulfide ores and concentrates containing chalcopyrite are typically hard to leach under atmospheric conditions. Smelting of these ores may also be a challenge, due to the inability of smelting processes to handle low-grade ores, as well as impurities such as arsenic and antimony. Alternative hydrometallurgical routes to treating chalcopyrite are therefore required. One option is pressure leaching, which is the focus of this work. In the pressure leaching process, sulfide ores and concentrates are leached in autoclaves at temperatures of 200 to 220°C and a pressure of about 3000 kPa (Schlesinger et al., 2011). An oxidising agent, usually oxygen, is required to oxidise sulfide ions to sulfate ions. The oxidation of sulfur to sulfate is exothermic; consequently, a method of heat removal is necessary in order to maintain the temperature in the autoclave."

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The island of Java lies within the Sunda-Banda magmatic arc, which is characterised by multiple phases of volcanic activity and extensive compressional deformation. Along this zone, significant gold and copper mineralisation occurs, including some of the world’s largest deposits. In West Java, epithermal gold mineralisation is typically located in a series of extensional and strike-slip faults that cut Miocene to Pliocene volcanic rocks. These are all low-sulfidation, epithermal, vein-stockwork-style deposits developed in Miocene to Pliocene calc-alkaline volcanic rocks, which have been intruded by shallow-level plutons.This paper discusses an example of epithermal mineralisation at Mt Subang, West Java. Gold mineralisation was originally identified from stream sediment, panned concentrate and rock geochemistry sampling in the early 1990s. Geophysical surveys (magnetics and induced polarisation resistivity/chargeability), trenching, pitting and diamond hole drilling has subsequently revealed silicified-quartz vein epithermal gold mineralisation hosted within fault structures. It is clear that these structures acted as hydrothermal fluid pathways leading to the development of mineralised offshoots along north–south extensional and en-echelon arrays of north-east–south-west and transtensional faults. A number of vertical offshoots also occur in flexures and fault jogs. Post-mineral faulting has subsequently dissected and offset a number of the offshoots. Therefore, a detailed knowledge of structure and fault kinematics and displacement magnitudes is required in order to understand the geometry and continuity of mineralisation across major structures and maximise the resource potential. Fe-Ni alloys can be used as raw material in making stainless steel. Laterite nickel ore is one of mineral resources for producing nickel alloys. In this work, the laterite ore after dehydration at 800 °C and the anthracite as reducing agent were mixed for pre-reduction at 900 °C, and then reduced to form Fe-Ni alloys at 1550-1620 °C through carbon-thermal reduction process. A high Ni-content alloy component in the metallurgical mixture can be formed through pre-reduction. Better separation of the resulting metals from the slag is found with lower Ni-content alloys produced or higher temperatures during reduction. An effective processing of Fe-Ni alloys needs further understanding of the process fundamentals and optimizing of the process parameters.

Any effectuation of a viable program of air pollution control will' require a basic understanding of the chemistry of atmospheric processes, the fate and migration of SO2, and the ultimate health effects of the sulfur oxides themselves. The migration and ultimate fate of Sop discharged into the atmosphere will be discussed with particular emphasis on the various conflicting views and how these relate to our present emission control regulations. Our present lack of knowledge is a severe detriment, and consideration will be given to those particular areas where future research may best be directed to provide the answers to a number of perplexing questions.

"A new device has been developed to directly measure the bubble loading of particle-bubble aggregates in industrial flotation machines, both mechanical flotation cells as well as flotation column cells. The bubble loading of aggregates allows for in-depth analysis of the operating performance of a flotation machine in terms of both pulp/collection zone and froth zone performance. This paper presents the methodology along with an example showing the excellent reproducibility of the device and an analysis of different operating conditions of the device itself.The device has been used to investigate the froth selectivity of attached particles. Simultaneous measurements were made using a different froth recovery measurement technique in the same flotation cell. A comparison of these techniques shows that in this case, particles are selectively detached from bubbles at or near the pulp-froth interface.INTRODUCTIONA flotation cell can be considered to operate in two distinct phases or zones; namely the pulp or collection phase and the froth phase. The pulp zone is responsible for the formation of hydrophobic particle-bubble aggregates, whilst the froth phase is responsible for the separation of these aggregates from surrounding suspended hydrophobic and hydrophilic particles. Thus, the froth phase is the grade determining phase in flotation. A measurement of the bubble load (the mass of particles attached to air bubbles in units of mass/volume) will enable the analysis of the performance of both the collection zone at creating bubble-particle aggregates and also the froth zone at separating these aggregates from surrounding pulp.A measure of froth zone performance that has been used extensively in flotation research is the Froth Recovery, Rf, of a particular system. Froth recovery is defined as the mass of particles collected in the concentrate launder by true flotation as a fraction of the mass of particles entering the froth phase. The measurement of bubble load allows for this term to be calculated easily, rather than having to go through the laborious task of, for example, changing froth depths to determine this performance criterion (Contini et al., 1988; Vera et al., 1999b; Feteris et al., 1987)."

The development of research activities at Risdon and the implementing of a policy of instrumentation in plant processes have, in recent years, entailed a considerable increase in research staff and created an urgent need for more space and modern laboratory facilities. The existing laboratories have been in use for 25 years and are now inadequate. New buildings have been authorized.The new buildings will comprise, firstly, a laboratory building of three floors giving a totai .floor space of approximately 11,000 sq.ft., and a pilot plant building as an annexe to the laboratory building, of approximately 4,900 sq.ft. The laboratory building will accommodate from 20 to 22 research workers, and additional plant operatives will be used for the control of processes in the pilot plant building. The new buildings are designed to provide facilities for three principal functions; the investigation and improvementof existing processes, the development of new processes up to the pilot plant stage, and the control and maintenance of instruments.LOCALITY AND ORIENTATION OF BUILDINGSThe site of the buildings is elevated ground on the eastern side of the main plant, near the main entrance and general office building. The emergence of China as a global economic power has not been without its birth pangs and the current coal market is testimony to this. Traditionally the coal market has been controlled by mature economies that functioned along balanced lines of supply and demand. The emergence of China and India as major forces in the international market has shifted this balance of power from mature economies to the developing economies of China and India. Of late Chinese Central Government policy has caused wide swings in the supply of Chinese coking coal and thermal coal to the international Asian markets. This has resulted in huge increases in demand for coal from producers in Australia, Canada, Indonesia, USA and Russia. Additionally since the late 1990s the liberalised Chinese economy has been growing by between nine to 12 per cent per annum. The corresponding rise in the standard of living of their 1.4 billion people has resulted in a strong demand for raw materials, initially met by domestic production and more recently met by the importation of raw materials including iron ore, oil, coking coal and thermal coal. Commensurate with this growth in China has been the emergence of India (pop one billion) as another major developing economy in the region. Whilst the Indian standard of living is lower than that of the Chinese, this subcontinent still has some 300 million people with middle class consumption demands. India is a major importer of oil, coking coal and thermal coal. It exports iron ore to China with growth parallel to China (seven to nine per cent per annum). These combined new demands from India and China have put unprecedented pressure on the global supply of coking and thermal coals. These pressures are reflected in the current world spot prices for coking and thermal coals which are at historically high levels. Whilst current demand from China and India is high it is anticipated that new projects will partially satisfy this increasing demand. Expectations are that overall thermal and coking coal prices will rise steadily. This paper seeks to identify the potential effects of Chinese and Indian economic growth on the international markets for coal.

"Grinding is simply the function of reducing particles in size or creating new surface areas. This may be accomplished by many means but we will only concern ourselves with the continuous grinding process as performed in a revolving drum or mill, containing a grinding media. Such a mill consists essentially of a feed head, a cylindrical shell section and a discharge head. To prevent internal wear of these parts it is customary to attach replaceable linings over the wear areas. The specification and design of these mill liners is more important than generally conceded. As they reduce the effective internal volume of the mill, they will consequently affect the whole mill ·design and operation.A number of mill designs of various sizes are available for combined crushing and grinding of materials within a wide size range. For simplif1cahon purposes we will refer 1n particular to conditions relating to standard mill shapes having a length which is greater than the diameter. Such mills usually rotate at speeds between 60% to 85% of the critical speed and may, depending on the grinding media used, be classified as rod mills, ball mills and pebble mills.LINER MATERIALSA great variety of materials have been and are being used for mill linings. Inauguration of the new political dispensation in South Africa in1994 initiated a dynamic shift in the ownership, management and development of the country?s affluent mineral heritage. The process of substituting the old South African regime with a new equitable system started soon after the 1994 election of the African National Congress (ANC) to parliament. The Congress?s Freedom Charter revealed the intent of the new dispensation when it called for radical transformation of mineral development. However, since then there have been important changes affecting the rules of mineral development. These are: ?A drastic change in politics ushered in by negotiation, a spirit of reconciliation and a desire to settle disputes peacefully ?The globalization of the South African mining industry in tandem with the opening of domestic mineral resources to foreign capitalists and ?The introduction of sustainable development as a holistic approach to mineral development in order to replace traditional narrow-minded environmental management. Each of these significantly shaped the new mineral investment environment of South Africa. This paper represents a summary of the historical developments leading to the current Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act No. 28 of 2002, its regulations, the much publicised Broad-Based Socio-Economic Empowerment Charter, its associated Scorecard, and the Draft Royalty Bill.

Geological modelling has historically been done using sectional interpretation of paper sections or on a computer screen. Boundaries of geological units or grade shells are interpreted by a geologist section by section and the shapes are drawn onto paper to be digitised later or they are directly digitised into a computer. This approach is referred to as explicit modelling. Such methods are time consuming if there are many section lines or boundaries to be interpreted. The number of metres drilled and resource models made is increasing each year and it will be difficult to keep up using explicit modelling methods. Alternatively, it is possible to use information carried in the drill holes, known geological relationships and point estimation methods in two or three dimensions, to create similar geology boundaries, while eliminating or at least greatly reducing the need to manually interpret and digitise detailed sectional interpretations. Such methods are referred to as implicit modelling and are available in a number of software packages. Implicit modelling approaches have been used in iron ore and found to significantly reduce the time needed for modelling while producing results that are comparable or better than standard explicit modelling approaches. A number of case studies have been undertaken of implicit modelling in iron ore deposits. Stratigraphic surfaces of bedded, folded and faulted iron ore deposits have been modelled in various deposits by Leapfrog Geo, GOCAD (with SKUA) and Vulcan Integrated Stratigraphic Modelling. Leapfrog Mining was used to model iron grade shells at particular cut-off grades. The modelled surfaces are of a high standard equivalent to those that could be produced by traditional explicit modelling but the time required by the implicit methods is far less. This Bureau of Mines study is an appraisal of the demand for platinum, should this strategic metal be used as a. catalyst in the National abatement of automobile exhaust pollution. The Clean Air Act 0f 1970, as amended, requires that automobiles produced in 1975 and thereafter be provided with antipollutive measures to control automotive exhaust emissions. The study considers the need for automobile pollution control, the methodology for such control, the annual primary (new) platinum demand for automobiles produced from 1975 to 1990, primary platinum availability, and supply-demand forecasts and outlook. The correlative demand for platinum for the production of the required unleaded gasoline is also considered. Methodology for the study included a forecast of new automobile production from 1975 to 1990, development of automobile survival and retirement data, estimates of new platinum demand under various conditions of salvage, and data on recycling the precious metal from the catalytic converters of scrapped vehicles and existing vehicles when their spent converters are exchanged for replacement units. The new platinum demand for automobile exhaust converters, based on a converter service life of 50,000 miles, is estimated to be 1.41 million troy ounces initially in 1975, rising to 1.68 million in 1980, and declining curvi-linearly to 0.94 million in 1990. The platinum demand for converter longevities other than 50,000 miles can be derived from the tabular data presented. An appendix to the report presents a comparison between longevities of 50,000 miles and 25,000 miles. The petroleum industry's demand for new platinum for the production of lead-free gasolines could total as high as 1 million troy ounces between 1972 and 1981, just for expansion of isomerization and reforming capacity, and is in addition to normal operating demand for this metal.

DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF A MOBILE MINING MACHINE INTRODUCTION Until recently, developing tunnels in hard rock has been accomplished either by the drill and blast method or by using large tunnel boring machines. Combining the flexibility of drill and blast with the safety, efficiency and productivity of a TBM has been the objective of mining machinery producers for many years. In 1979 The Robbins Company began developing a new type of tunnel boring machine called the Mobile Miner to meet these objectives. The development and testing of the Mobile Miner is the subject of this paper. CURRENT MINE DEVELOPMENT METHODS Both the drill and blast method and the use of a TBM have notable advantages and disadvantages. The drill and blast method, for example, allows much more flexibility, requires less setup time and has a lower initial cost than a TBM; however it requires the use of high explosives and blasting has a disrupting effect on the rock surrounding the development. A TBM, on the other hand, is safer to operate, more efficient, more productive and produces smooth tunnel walls without disturbing the surrounding rock. In longer straight drifts it will easily out distance the drill and blast method. The TBM, however, is limited to boring a circular cross section tunnel which must then be modified if a flat floor is required. It also has a higher initial cost and an extended setup period.

Mesoporous gold sponge has the unique property of being both metallic and highly resistant to oxidation. It has potential application in catalysis, in bio-sensors, in optical coatings, in analytical chemistry and, as we show here, as the basis for a new kind of ultra-capacitor. Due to the cost of gold, the most probable niche for a gold-based ultra-capacitor would be in the high-power/high-energy regime, a region where gold would compete with devices based on RuO2. A high internal resistance limits the power that can be usefully drawn from existing carbon-based ultra-capacitors, and that this problem can potentially be overcome by gold-based devices. A simple proof-of-concept ultra-capacitor based on mesoporous gold is described and its behaviour during charge and discharge cycles examined. In this work a step change in the input or output voltage of the device was used as the controlling parameter. There was also a residual faradaic current resulting from traces of undissolved aluminium left over from the AuAl2 precursor used to make the sponge, and some charge storage due to polarization of the solution. Deconvolution of these three effects was not entirely accomplished, but an ostensible capacitance of about 7 to 14 mF/g Au was demonstrated. Further improvement from these early results seems likely.

Blind areas around construction equipment are a major contributing factor in incidents involving a piece of equipment striking a worker. In highway construction, these types of incidents result in an average of 22 deaths a year in the United States. The Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, in cooperation with the Washington State Department of Transportation, is evaluating methods to decrease these incidents. One such method uses devices that assist equipment operators in monitoring blind areas around the equipment to prevent collisions with workers or other objects. Several camera and sensor systems are available for this application. These systems were evaluated on various trucks used in road construction and maintenance. Tests were conducted on sanding trucks during the winter months, which allowed researchers to investigate the effectiveness and limitations of various technologies under the most extreme conditions. Tests were also conducted on dump trucks and utility vehicles during the warmer months to study the effectiveness of the systems in highway work zones. Results showed that many difficulties arise when using camera and sensor systems in cold, snowy climates. And, while the operation of these systems is more reliable during the warmer months, challenges still exist in using them on equipment in congested work areas.

"When hard times strike in the mining cycle, sites tighten their belts and focus on lowering their unit costs. Lower unit costs can be achieved by reducing expenditure, increasing production, or by a combination of both. Faced with these requirements, site personnel must turn to areas where they can focus their effort for maximum return. For many sites, both in Canada and overseas, focusing on improving flotation cell maintenance is one of the areas where gains can be made for minimum outlay. Due to resource limitations and/or lack of equipment understanding, maintenance on many sites is only conducted on a reactive basis, once equipment fails. This paper will promote the idea that mineral processors should become more familiar with their equipment so they can ensure that the plant’s ability to produce is not compromised. By better understanding the flotation equipment and ensuring the critical components are maintained, it should be possible to unlock value in an operation. Flotation equipment inspections will be discussed in detail, including key items to look for during these inspections. Potential approaches for predicting wear and change-out time for flotation equipment components will be also demonstrated. An example of one approach used at a South African nickel site will be given.INTRODUCTIONWith metal prices decreasing and operating costs rising, concentrator operators are looking for ways to improve their bottom line. Lower unit costs can be achieved by reducing expenditure, increasing production, or by a combination of both. To meet the expectation of shareholders, mineral processors must turn to areas where they can get the best return for their efforts. One area where there is a large opportunity for improvement is in the maintenance of flotation equipment.On many mine sites, both domestically and around the world, it is quite common to see the philosophy applied of repairing equipment only once it has failed. Though some sites have advanced enterprise management systems and monitoring programs, in the authors’ experience, the decision on flotation equipment maintenance is rarely made on a proactive basis. Two common trends that are evident in the mining industry are that operations are under pressure to keep the plant producing, and maintenance managers generally have very strict budget targets to meet. In addition to these factors, few sites have a good understanding of the financial implications of running with worn or broken flotation equipment. Knights, Jullian and Jofre (2006) summarize this situation well, stating that the lack of correlation between some commonly used maintenance performance measures and key business drivers can lead to maintenance being seen only as a cost center (that needs to be reduced) rather than a tool for productivity improvement."

The first test pile for the carrier pier and south wharf at NAVSTA Puget Sound was driven on December 27, 1989, and the final pile was tested on February 26, 1990. Implementation and modification of the test pile program were done by the owners (WESTDIV and ROICC-Everett), the engineers (ABAM and Hart Crowser), and the contractor and his subcontractor (General Manson Joint Venture and GRL). The site is located as shown on Figure 1. SUMMARY OF THE SOIL CONDITIONS A soil profile along the pier is shown as Figure 2. The soil units can be generalized as follows: ? Upper Silts - Fill, sandy silt, and clayey silt extending from the mudline to an elevation of about -80 feet; ? Intermediate Sand - A medium dense to very dense silty sand unit which is about 30 feet thick near the shore, but thins and disappears offshore; ? Lower Silts - Sandy silts and clayey silts in a medium stiff to stiff condition; ? Deep Sand - A very dense overconsolidated sandy soil encountered at an elevation of about -145 feet.

There is a considerable amount of lignite reserve in the form of thick seams in Turkey. It is rather complicated to predict the characteristics of strata response to mining operation in thick seams. However, a comprehensive evaluation of ground behaviour is a prerequisite for maintaining an efficient production, especially when top coal winning by means of caving behind the face is applied. A comprehensive modelling of deformations and induced stresses is vital for the selection of optimum production strategy. In this study, numerical modelling and analysis of a longwall panel at Omerler underground coalmine have been carried out by using the software called FLAC3D developed based on the finite difference technique. Firstly, a 3-D numerical model of the M3 panel has been prepared. Secondly, induced stresses formed around the longwall face have been determined as a function of face advance where the face was located at the bottom of thick coal-seam. Results obtained from modelling studies have revealed that the front abutment vertical stress was maximum at 7 metres in front of the face and magnitude of front abutment stress was found to increase up to a distance of 200 metres away from the face start line. As the face was further advanced after 200 m from the face start line, there was not any significant change in the characteristics of front abutment stresses. Results of numerical analysis of the panel were in good agreement with in situ observations.
