BHP Billiton Iron Ore has replaced the conventional product quality control batch system at Yandi with the Continuous Stockpile Management System (CSMS) centred on a fully integrated æcontinuousÆ stockpile flow from mine planning through to port reclaiming. With increasing tonnage rates, tight operational coupling associated with the original batch system caused production interference which achieved final product quality but in an increasingly inefficient manner. This innovative approach places a continuous emphasis on product grade control and takes full advantage of the most appropriate blending opportunities of the mine to port planning and production system in order to reduce the natural variability of the ore to an acceptable level. To implement continuous control, product variability throughout the process is classified as long-term and short-term. Long-term variability is best controlled through the monthly mine planning process which determines monthly grade targets while taking into account optimum mine development. In the past, attempts to control long-term variability were made at the port through selective stockpiling and reclaiming which reduced operational efficiency. Short-term variability is best controlled around the monthly mine grade target by daily mine production scheduling, train sequencing, stacking into port stockpiles of appropriate size and systematical stockpile reclaiming. The implementation of the new system has maintained customer accepted shipping grades and has provided significant improvements in resource utilisation, operational efficiencies and costs.

Experience over the past eight years has proven that partnership and cooperation in mineral engineering education is essential to maintain programs in this field. At this moment the joint European Mineral Masters Engineering Course (EMMEC) has three programs in the areas of mining, minerals engineering and geotechnical/environmental engineering, offered by combinations of nine universities in seven European countries. About 25 companies are associated with the universities in the Federation of European Mineral Programs (FEMP) which coordinates these activities. The EMMEC has applied for recognition under the newly launched EU “Erasmus Mundus” program in which the EU makes 280 million Euro available for bursaries for non-European students and scholars.

Supply and Demand After a dismal first half, the industry saw a marked improvement in its markets during the final six months of 1983. Domestic consumption was 17.6% higher in the second half of the year, primarily due to a surge in electric power requirements. The sharp increase in demand for electric power during the third and fourth quarters afforded utilities the opportunity to lower stocks that had accumulated to record levels during 1982. Consumer stocks were reduced from 179 Mt (197 million st) at the end of June to 153 Mt (169 million st) by the end of the year. That is the largest inventory drawdown on record during a six-month period without a major coal strike. Despite the huge depletion in inventories, coal production in the second half of 1983 rose 1.3% above output in the second half of 1982. However, because of the disappointing first half, production in 1983 totaled only 712 Mt (785 million st), 6.4% less than the 760 Mt (838 million st) produced in 1982. Demand The extent to which the economic recovery affected coal markets in 1983 varied: • total domestic coal consumption increased 4.2%; • electric utility coal consumption increased 5.3%; • exports declined by about one-fourth; • coal consumption at coke plants declined 9.5%; and • coal consumption in the other industrial sectors increased 2.9%. Domestic coal consumption totaled 667 Mt (737 million st) it 1983, 27 Mt (30 million st) more than 1982. Electric utility consumption increased from 539 M1 (594 million st) in 1982 to 567 M1 (625 million st) in 1983. Coal consumption at coke plants declined from 37 Mt (41 million st) to 34 M1 (37 million st). Residential and commercial use increased 181 kt (200,000 st) - from 7.4 to 7.6 Mt (8.2 to 8.4 million st). Electric Utilities: Electric power generation increased 3.1% in 1983. Demand for electric power increased in all major consumer categories. Residential and commercial use rose 2.7% and 3.3%, respectively. The most striking increase, however, and indicative of the economy's strong upturn, was the increase in industrial electric power use. Industrial power requirements, which declined 9.8% in 1982, rose 4.1% in 1983. The Capitol Area East End Complex is currently being constructed under contract with the State of California Department of General Services on two sites adjacent to the grounds of the California State Capitol Building in downtown Sacramento. The complex will consolidate the headquarters of the Departments of Health Services and Education, which currently occupy several facilities located throughout Sacramento. When completed in 2003, the complex will be the largest civic office project in California history, with approximately 1.5 million square feet of office space and housing nearly 6,300 state workers. The total project is being constructed on five separate blocks in downtown Sacramento, Blocks 171 through 174 and 225. Separate design/build contracts were executed for the construction on Blocks 171 through 174 and the construction on Block 225. The scope of this paper is limited to construction on Blocks 171 through 174, which comprise a square, two blocks on a side, bounded by 15th, 17th, L, and N streets, located immediately to the east of Capitol Park and the State Capitol Building, as pictured in the image shown below.

In setting out to describe the methods and machinery employed at Iron Knob the writer does not attempt to give any information as to the situation, topography or geological features of the locality. This, together with estimates of the quantities of ore still available, has been carried out in a most thorough manner by R. L. Jackr and F. R. Hockey. This essay is intended to deal with working methods as they exist to-day, beginning with drilling, blasting, quarry traction, etc., and touching on such details as the supplyof electricity, water and compressed air.At the present time almost the entire output of ore is won from the hill known as Iron Monarch. The form of the hill, a smooth, rounded dome, rising some 640 ft. above the plain and having a base diameter of n miles, lends itself ideally to the "bench" system of open-cut quarrying.Fig. 1 shows the relationship of the benches "A," "B" and "E" in their order of development. "The results of humus and overburden geochemical surveys over the Doyon, Bousquet and Page-Williams gold ore deposits are presented.These studies show that humus sampling for gold gives negative results over the Doyon deposit. The lack of response is probably caused by the presence of 1 m of relatively impermeable glaciolacustrine clay and silt that overlies 1 m to 2 m of till over the surface expression of the ore zone. By contrast, positive responses for gold occur in humus samples over the Page Williams A and C gold deposits. The ""A"" ore zone is covered by several metres of exotic calcareous till over 0.5 m to 1 m of older, locally derived till. Anomalous values for gold in humus range from 10 to 35 ppb over the orebody. Overburden over the ""C"" ore zones is much thinner, generally it consists of less than 2 m of sandy till. Trenching humus anomalies that range from 10 to 1360ppb Au uncovered the gold mineralization. The geochemical dispersal trains in till from the Doyon orebody and the Page-Williams ""A"" zone are relatively short (i.e. less than 200 m) because both deposits occur in the lee of bedrock highs that shielded them from extensive glacial quarrying. Dispersal trains from all three pyritic gold deposits can be defined using either the fine fraction or heavy mineral fraction of the till.The intensity of the gold in till anomalies over the ore zones is variable. Therefore, it would be misleading to attach rigid significant threshold gold values to overburden drilling results. Each case must be evaluated based on bedrock topography, sample density, overburden type, thickness of till, as well as size, type and orientation of the target exposed to glacial erosion."

Analysis of data on the equilibrium exchange of sodium ions from salt solutions for calcium ions, from various fractions of an oxidized calcareous iron ore from Lorraine, France, strongly suggests that the calcium may be attached to the solid by only one of its bonds. Nearly equal values were found for the equilibrium expression from data covering concentration ranges of 1000 fold for the salt and 235 fold for the ion-exchangeable calcium. Differences indicated between the exchangeable calcium contents of the slime and the sandy portions of the ore, as well as the equilibrium relationship itself, are of importance in the flotation of the ore. During an experimental program on the flotation of oxidized calcareous iron ores from Lorraine, France, ion-exchangeable calcium was found in the ore. Because this source of calcium ions, if not controlled, could thwart all efforts at flotation, an extensive study was made of the phenomenon. The part of that study reported here was to obtain data on the equilibrium established between ore solids and solutions of sodium chloride, and to analyze the data to try to understand better the physical chemistry of the exchange. The ore contains oolites of goethite and quartz grains embedded in a matrix consisting of calcite and a brown cement believed to be the residue from oxidation of the silicate minerals found in fresh unoxidized ore. When ground, a substantial fraction of the ore becomes a fine slime in which is concentrated more than half of the alumina content of the ore. It is believed that the alumina occurs as unidentified clay minerals with which most of the ion-exchange capacity of the ore is associated. A preliminary experiment on the exchange of ions from the ore for sodium ions from solutions of NaCl showed that calcium was about ten times as abundant as magnesium in the exchange solutions. Thus calcium was the predominant ion in causing difficulties with flotation, and it was the only one for which data was obtained in this study. It is believed that the omission of magnesium ion exchange from consideration does not invalidate the results. It is possible, however, that inclusion of magnesium in the analyses and calculations or its prior elimination from the samples would have improved the consistency of the results. [Several new oilfields have been developed in northwestern Wyoming during the past 10 years, production is obtained from discontinuous, permeable sands enclosed within impermeable shales. The energy to drive the oil to producing wells in supplied by gas in solution in the oil. Most of the wells had high-initial potentials, but rates of oil production have steadily declined, indicating a dissipation of the driving energy and the possibility that large volumes of oil will remain unrecovered in the reservoirs. The studies reported in this paper were undertaken to develop laboratory data of the type most likely to be needed by persons studying the susceptibility of the Newcastle sand reservoir to secondary-recovery methods.]

"Abstract The continued concentration of building activities in cramped areas of city centres means more underground construction and facilities. Demand to minimize execution time and any kind of disturbance to business, general traffic, people and nearby technical structures is increasing. To answer these challenges foundation business has to develop schedule-wise and technically reliable deep excavation and foundation solutions in vulnerable surroundings and challenging soil conditions.Drilled pipe pile wall – RD-pile wall – is a combination of Ruukki drilled steel pipe piles and interlocking sections. Individual RD piles, typical diameters between 219 mm to 610 mm, are connected to each other with interlocks welded to the piles on the automated welding line at the workshop. The matching dimensions of the drilling system and interlocking sections allow the installation of RD piles through stones and boulders and even into the bedrock, if necessary, in a single operation. Installation is done by a down-the-hole hammer (DTH) using the centric drilling system and oversized ring bits or a drilling system consisting of a pilot bit and reamer wings.RD-pile walls have been used as permanent and temporary retaining walls for different kinds of demanding excavations and structures, such as bridge foundation, as quay wall and as sealing structure in rehabilitation of an existing dam. Rigidity and watertightness of the lower end of the RDpile wall is being researched as well as fire design issues examined. One of the most fascinating RDpile wall solution is to utilize the wall as a permanent underground basement wall. Reliable and rigid connection to bedrock decreases the bending moment and deflection of the wall and good fire resistance in addition to large variety of pile dimensions and steel grades gives possibilities to design and execute a cost-efficient basement wall and foundations without temporary retaining wall works. 1. IntroductionIn northern Scandinavian soil conditions, installation of sheet pile walls, or even secant pile walls, is often problematic due to the existence of hard and large boulders in the overburden, and especially when the retaining wall structure should penetrate to or into the hard bedrock. On the other hand, an efficient and reliable piling technique suitable for the demanding soil conditions described above, percussion drilling, has been developed since the 1960’s, and especially from the mid-1990’s, when the concentric drilling method with the ring bit and pilot was introduced. A new retaining wall application, the RD pile wall was developed by combining that drilling method with the widely used retaining wall solution based on steel pipe piles and welded interlocks (a pipe pile wall normally installed with vibratory or impact hammers)."

Construction of the new JFK International Airport Light Rail System (LRS) began in 1998 with a pre-construction load test program. This $1.2 billion design-build project consists of approximately 13 kilometers of elevated twin rail. The elevated rail system is supported on nearly 500 piers requiring deep foundations. The presence of underlying compressible and liquefiable soils as well as space constraints precluded the use of large spread footings. In the 1980's the Port Authority undertook extensive testing to evaluate various piles and drilled shafts types. The LRS piling sub-contractor and the Geotechnical Engineer conducted additional tests for this project to identify the most cost effective deep foundation type. Candidate piles types included: Monotube®, Tapertube®, and closed ended pipe piles. The tapered pile types were found to be the most cost effective and the project utilized both the Monotube® and Tapertube® piles. This paper presents the results of the load test program and the issues related to pile driving induced vibrations and ground movement.

"l. IntroductionA reliable sampling system is the basis for an on-stream analyzer. This was realized in Outokumpu company when the development work of the Courier 300 On-Stream X-ray analysis system was started. Because Outokumpu Oy is a mining and mineral processing company, its engineers have been able to thoroughly test sampler prototypes in actual operating situations. The sampler development has been going for several years in close co-operation between company's concentrators, the Institute of Physics and the Instrument Division of Outokumpu Oy. The most active part of the work was done between 1969- 1972. Besides the reliable operation of a sampler special attention was paid to the representatively of the samples taken by the samplers. 2. The Courier 300 Sampling SystemThe sampling system comprises up to fourteen sampling circuits in one Courier analysis system. Each circuit consists of the following components:1. Primary sampler 2. The Bureau of Mines receives frequent requests for information on the treatment of mercury ores, but as its own and almost all other publications on mercury are out of print, the Bureau has prepared this circular on the metal for the prospector and operator of small mines and plants. Mercury, commonly though improperly termed ?quicksilver?, is the only common metal that is liquid at ordinary temperatures. Mercury is used in the amalgamation of gold and silver, in power boilers, explosives, friction-less bearings, laboratory apparatus, lamps, medicine, paint, rectifiers, and for ?silvering.? The last mentioned is being superseded by silvering with silver. The use of mercury boilers may increase when they are thoroughly understood, but amalgamation is -being replaced to some extent by the use of corduroy and other collecting mediums, such as jigs and flotation cells.

A simple solution to the problem of whether to round the calculated number of trucks up or down to the nearest whole number is to adopt as criterion the minimum cost per unit volume/mass moved, assuming all trucks in the fleet are of the same type. When the effects on journey time of varying haul-road slope are calculated for several rolling resistances, it is shown that the optimum angle of 7.5 degrees is moderately independent of both rolling resistance and height climbed; the lower the resistance, the lower the sensitivity to ramp angle, but if haul-road gradients do not exceed 1 in 10 (5.7 degrees) for safety reasons then travelling time will never be more than 7% greater than its theoretical minimum. All 231 Canadian primary gold mines that produced from 1946 to 2004 were analyzed with respect to their production and economic characteristics. Trend analysis revealed that the average annual capacity of Canadian gold mines, as measured by ore processed or gold produced, has increased over time. Conversely, the average grade of gold mines has decreased over time. The distribution of gold output is highly uneven: for example, the 22 giant mines producing more than 100 t (metric tonnes) of gold account for 62% of total output. Small mines producing less than 10 t Au account for 54% of total mines, but less than 4% of total gold. Each historical mine in the database was evaluated on the basis of a set of economic and technical assumptions to determine if it would be economic to develop today. Based on the net present value using an 8% discount rate, only 103 of the 231 mines were determined to be economic. About 80% of the uneconomic mines had less than 10 t of contained gold, and 63% had less than 5 t. It is concluded that these small mines would not be viable today due to a combination of real capital cost increases, and more stringent permitting and environmental regulations. The implication is that future gold supply in Canada will hinge on the discovery and development of a new generation of larger mines. Given that only one giant mine has been discovered in the past 20 years, it seems likely that gold output will decrease in the future.

Three complete connector assemblies and six separate contacts were submitted to a series of tests to establish the connectors permissibility and compliance with U. S. Bureau of Mines research Contract #H 0110423 D.C. portion. Test Procedure TPC-0118 was coordinated, and the test plan approved by the Bureau as fully complying with the intent of the contract for the direct current connectors. The components and connector assemblies have been demonstrated in testing that they meet or exceed all the requirements of the test procedure.

Compared with elsewhere in the world, New Zealand quarries have tended to be mostly small. The reasons for this are a combination of the relatively high transport costs, low population density and a pioneering, self-employed attitude. The small size of the operations is reflected in low productivity, a tendency to repair and rebuild equipment rather than replace it, designed flexibility in the processing plant, minimal reserves investigation or development planning and a versatile and innovative work force who are generally not professionally trained. The Resource Management Act and the Health, Safety and Employment Act as well as a customer driven demand for higher quality and consistent products will have even greater influence upon future direction of the Industry. The trend will be towards fewer quarries operated by companies and professional managers that can adapt to the new demands.

This Research & Development (R&D) study was conducted in the field of applied blasting engineering in Ethiopia, within the AKH Railway Project, which was built in Girena, within the boundaries of the province of Mersa, in the Basalt Quarry at km 346, Ashangi Formation, occured in Eocene geological time in the aphanitic trachibasalt. Under the scope of the study, which has been performed to determine the effects of the artificial discontinuities at different depths and the effects of artificial discontinuities through structural damage risk, three test areas, at the same location and same formation, were considered. Six numbers of artificial discontinuities, each 10 m (32, 81 ft) transverse, were created by using pre-splitting and drilling-blasting technology. The number of sequential artificial discontinuities on each test area is two and they have the same length. The length of artificial discontinuities are; 6,80 m (22,31 ft) at the first test area, 13,60 m (44,62 ft) at the second test area and 17,00 m (55,77 ft) at the third test area respectively. The distance between sequential artificial discontinuities is 8 m (26,25ft) on each test area. Thirty-one shots were executed in order to produce vibration (10 shots on the first test area, 11 shots on the second area, 10 shots on the third test area). One hundred and twenty-three seismic recordings were obtained during the execution of the shots by using 4 seismographs. The closest distance between the shot points and the nearest measuring station is 5,30 m (17,39 ft). During the shots, the rock was cracked and there was no fragmentation and/or fly rock. At the first test area, measured PPV values are between 25,40-127,00 mm/s (1-5 inch/s) before the first artificial discontinuity and less than 50,80 mm/s (2 inch/s) after the second artificial discontinuity. At the second test area, measured PPV values are between 76,20-177,80 mm/s (3-7 inch/s) before the first artificial discontinuity and less than 76,20 mm/s (3 inch/s) after the second artificial discontinuity. At the third test area, measured PPV values are between 50,80-279,40 mm/s (2-11 inch/s) before the first artificial discontinuity and less than 50,80 mm/s (2 inch/s) after the second artificial discontinuity. Peak reduction rates in Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) values determined by measuring as follows: In the first test area 95,77% (106,00 mm/s to 4,48 mm/s) (4,17 in/s to 0,18 in/s), in the second test area 79,77% (176,00 mm/s to 35,60 mm/s) (6,93 in/s to 1,40 in/s), in the third test area 95,85% (from 205,00 mm/s to 8,55 mm/s) (from 8,07 in/s to 0,34 in/s). The arithmetic mean of the differences of PPV values (decrease rate) is 82,66% in the first test area, 69,37% in the second test area, and 92,03% in the third test area. The highest sound value is 138,50 dB and is defined as “noise”. When the measured parameter values are examined it was determined on the USBM norm graphs that these vibrations carry a risk of structural damage in the region before the first artificial discontinuity. While passing through artificial discontinuities the vibrations progress by losing energy and the vibrations passing through two artificial discontinuities do not carry structural damage risk under current conditions.

Cycloconverters are discussed as a proven technology for mine hoists. \IntroductionUntil rather recent technical and commercial advances in power and signal electronics, DC motors were used almost exclusively for applications requiring continuously adjustable operating speeds and torques. More recently, the significantly higher efficiency and the accordingly lower operating costs of AC motors gained importance. An effective and efficient speed control of AC motors requires the control of AC voltage and frequency. Table 1 shows typical applications of adjustable-speed AC drives.CycloconvertersOf particular interest to the mining industry are cycloconverters for hoist drives. The cycloconverter represents by far the simplest, most efficient and most economical means of converting a constant-voltage, constant-frequency supply into an adjustable-voltage, adjustable-frequency supply as required for the speed control of AC drives operating in the frequency range to half of the utility frequency.Cycloconverters feeding synchronous motors or induction motors are ideally suited for slow-speed direct-coupled drives."
