"The energy output of an explosive is typically calculated using an equation of state and computerapplications. Results are reported as weight and bulk strength, either in absolute terms or relative toANFO. The effect of the equation of state selected and the assumptions regarding the energy calculation are considered and interpreted for the purpose of blast design. It appears that variations in the heat of detonation which result from the selection of the equation of state and parameters associated with it are not sufficient to significantly affect blast patterns, explosive consumption and costs. However variations stemming from the use of “available energy” associated with a cut-off pressure are significant, suggesting in many cases large pattern expansions. The validity of the various approaches is discussed and blast design results based on the energy calculated by the different approaches are presented and evaluated."

An equation developed for gaseous hydrocarbon mixtures predicts molal volumes with an average absolute deviation of 0.73 percent when applied to 264 natural gas and condensate systems including 2,043 PVT points. Another equation developed for liquid hydrocarbon mixtures predicts molal volumes with an average absolute deviation of 1.12 percent when applied to 346 crude oil systems including 1,759 PVT points. Both equations require composition of the mixture to be expressed as mole fraction of methane through heptanes-plus, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen and carbon dioxide, together with the characteristics of the heptanes-plus fraction in addition to the temperature and pressure. The equations cover wide ranges of the variables involved, and their accuracy is considerably better than that of other available methods. The equations were differentiated to allow calculation of the coefficients of isothermal compressibility and isobaric thermal expansion. (In this paper the coefficient of isothermal com-pressibility and the coefficient of isobaric thermal expansion will be expressed as compressibility and thermal expansion coefficient, respectively.) Equations to calculate these quantities are presented. INTRODUCTION Calculations of reservoir performance for petroleum reservoirs require accurate knowledge of the volumetric behavior of hydrocarbon mixtures, both liquid and gaseous. Compressibilities are required in transient fluid flow problems, and thermal expansion coefficients are important in thermal methods of production. An accurate laboratory investigation of the PVT behavior of each reservoir fluid encountered would be costly and time consuming. For this reason various correlations for predicting fluid properties have been developed and recorded in recent literature. Correlations have been presented in the form of graphs, tables and equations. Since an increasing number of studies are being conducted with the aid of electronic computers, recent efforts have been directed toward development of correla-tions suitable for computer programming. Application of computers permits the use of more complex correlations which otherwise are not feasible. Moreover, methods for predicting reservoir performance, particularly those based on the compositional material balance, depend upon the capability of accurately expressing the molal volumes and other fluid properties as functions of pressure, temperature and composition. This paper intends to introduce the development of copper smelting and converting technologies in China in recent years, with a particular emphasis on the introduction of various continuous converting technologies, and moreover, it analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of those technologies, including their impact on the downstream anode refining from different points of view. INTRODUCTION At present, many converting technologies are used in copper pyro-metallurgical plants in China, including Peirce-Smith (PS) converter, flash converting furnace, multi-lance based top blowing, bottom blowing and so on. These technologies have spanned a wide range of time. PS converter technology has been applied in copper smelters for many years and most of the blister copper have been produced by this technology; flash converting technology has been developed since 1990s and been maturely applied in several plants up until now; top blowing and bottom blowing technologies have been revived in China in the past decade and boast good environmental protection performance, energy efficiency, throughput capacity and short process flow. All of the said technologies have reference operations in treating high-grade matte. As more and more attention is paid to environmental protection globally and copper smelters continuously seek for cost reduction, it is necessary to share those converting technologies, especially those new converting technologies derived in China, with copper smelting practitioners in the world. This paper aims to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of various technologies from a macroscopic view and discuss their actual application effects, current developments and future improvements. BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF VARIOUS CONVERTING TECHNOLOGIES IN CHINA China has seen a rapid development in copper smelting industry in the past 30 years and has become the largest gathering place of copper smelters in the world, most of which are operating with PS converting furnace technology, however, with the increasingly strict environmental requirements of the Chinese government in recent years, the low-level pollution issue and the disadvantage of large gas exhaust amount per unit of copper of converting furnaces are particularly prominent.

A consideration of mining ventures and the changes of an environmental nature that occur. The paper is introduced with a general statement claiming recognition that mining ventures are important to human well-being but that these need to be justified against the environmental changes that they bring about. The various factors that need to be considered are cited followed by an historical review of mining activities. The various environmental issues are discussed under three headings; socio-economic, physical and biological, prior to reviewing the world's demand for minerals including fossil fuels. In conclusion guidelines for appraising mining ventures relative to environmental changes that may occur, are given.

GIS and multivariate geometric distribution have been used to predict the association of high-level intrusives with hydrothermal alteration related to iron oxide Cu-Au (IOCG) mineralizing systems. Several examples in the Russian northeast are presented in this paper. IOCG ore deposits can have enormous geological resources containing significant reserves of base, precious, and strategic metals, and hence are economically attractive targets for mineral exploration. To date, examples of this type of mineralization have not been reported from the northeastern area of Russia. The Tarinskiy ore cluster, located in Eastern Yakutia, shows brecciated altered rocks with sulphide and iron oxide cement, which is typical for IOCG mineralization of the iron oxide Cu-Au±U type. This cluster was formed near surface and is linked with the Rep- Yuruinskiy pluton. It has potential to host new world-class precious metal deposits in northeastern Russia

There are many advantages to upgrading coal with dry jigging technology. The most obvious is the lack of process water, which eliminates the need for fines dewatering and slurry confinement. Dry jigging eliminates the clean coal moisture penalty associated with wet processing. Particulate emissions are virtually nonexistent due to inclusions of fabric dust collectors on all modern dry jig plants. Because of the environmentally friendly nature of dry jig plants, installation permits are often measured in days, not months. There has also been a fundamental advance in dry jigging efficiency. All of these advantages have renewed the coal industry’s interest in dry jigging. But air jigging is not right for every application. There are limitations due to particle size, particle shape, moisture and near gravity content. This article explores the evolution of dry jigging. It reviews parameters important for determining the suitability of dry jigging. It also compares historical performance data as measured by imperfection, against results from modern dry jigging technology. The article also presents data from modern dry jig installations.

The use of ceramics to protect equipment subjected to wear in abrasive and corrosive applications has been accepted by most plants as the industry norm. Little is, however, known about alternative special ceramic based products which are available for the protection of plant assets. With careful engineering, impact resistant ceramics can be used in high impact zones using modern ceramic technology. Properly selected and properly installed, ceramics will provide a tough wear resistant lining for protection against abrasion and impact. Basalt, on the other hand, is widely used in coal washing plant process pipes with varying degrees of success. Basalt is normally not used for the lining of bends, ?T? pieces or reducers due to the reduced wear resistance compared to alumina ceramic. The advantage is a much reduced initial capital cost. A patented ceramic composite non-return valve solved an old problem encountered in the operation of medium sumps. The design approach overcomes the lack of functionality of alternative designs and reduces valve wear while preventing medium settlement during plant shutdown periods. Direct bonded ceramic pulley lagging is becoming the industry norm, eliminating most of the problems encountered with conventional pulley lagging systems.

This final report summarizes the effort on a very aggressively scheduled and demanding development program undertaken by Westinghouse for the U.S. Bureau of Mines under Contract No. H0101262. The objective of this program was to produce hardware and test it to determine the efficacy of certain concepts of Coal Mine Rescue and Survival as established by the request for proposal and the study performed for the U.S. Bureau of Mines by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). (These are stated in paragraph 1. 1 for reference.) In carrying out this program, Westinghouse provided specific hardware designs in consonance with the objectives of the concepts outlined in the NAE study final report. Though this contract did not require producing final design hardware ready for introduction to the coal mining community, components of the CMR&SS - as delivered - have some value in disaster situations and are to be kept on standby alert. Additional design and production development is required and should be undertaken on most of the subsystems and components before they can be used in the competitive coal mining community.

The variation in pillar behavior at underground coal mines working in the Bonito coal seam is observed in both research and mining company case studies. There is no consistency in pillar behavior, as it varies from mine to mine. In some cases, it is possible to find rib yields for both excavation modes and pillar sizes. This paper?s objective is to investigate pillar behavior for different load conditions and pillar sizes. Three-dimensional numerical simulation models considering these factors were built. A matrix was then assembled to compare pillar behavior between loading conditions, as well as between different pillar sizes with the same loading condition. The results showed some pillar rib plasticity due to vertical loading and stress relief independent of the pillar size and load. For the same load conditions, the yielding thickness is the same for different pillar sizes.

En este sentido, se instala un sistema microsísmico donde mediante el análisis de la microsismicidad se elaboró los estándares que permitieron reducir los incidentes por estallidos de roca presente, así como la frecuencia, magnitud y daños a las personas, y equipo e infraestructura de mina, debido a la energía liberada por los eventos microsísmicos. Por ello, el presente trabajo señala los beneficios del uso del sistema de análisis de microsismicidad como la actualización contínua de la zonificación minera de acuerdo a la concentración de esfuerzos, procediendo al reforzamiento del sostenimiento como medida de prevención.

An experimental evaluation of a selective agglomeration process in which an agglomerated coal rich phase was produced as a result of mixing light oil to various raw coal slurries is described. The beneficiation achieved by this method is compared to that obtained bv conventional froth flotation. The results suggest' that oil agglomeration is a more selective process than froth flotation and is less sensitive to variations in feed pulp density. Selective agglomeration has the additional advantage of producing a low moisture content product. The effect of replacing flotation filter cake with an equivalent amount of selectively agglomerated product in coke-making was studied with the aid of a pilot-scale coke oven. The results suggest that the principal effect of such a measure is to increase the bulk density of the charge.

The worldwide budget for nonferrous, nonfuel mineral exploration was expected to increase by 58 percent in 2004 from the 2003 budget, according to Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The increase comes two years after a five-year period of declining spending for mineral exploration (1998 to2002). Figures suggest a subsequent 27 percent increase in budgeted expenditures from 2002 to 2003. For the second consecutive year, all regional exploration budget estimates were anticipated to increase. The worldwide budget for gold exploration achieved about 50 percent of the total amount budgeted in 2004.This was 68 percent, or US$715 million, higher than the reported 2003 budget. The 2004 worldwide exploration budget estimates for copper increased by 70 percent, orUS$237 million, to US$577 million from the 2003 budget. The budget for nickel exploration increased 52 percent, or US$89 million more than in 2003. The 2004 exploration budget for other mineral targets (primarily cobalt, heavy minerals, industrial minerals and silver) increased114 percent, or US$118 million.

Conventional methods for determining the size of dust suspended in a gas require that agglomerates (clusters of particles) first be broken into particles, but in evaluating industrial dust-removing equipment the size of the agglomerates as they actually exist in the gas stream is far more important. This paper presents results of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Mines to develop methods for determining the size of dust agglomerates suspended in a gas stream. The studies are part of the Bureau's continuing research on synthetic liquid fuels. The size and size-distribution of agglomerates as they exist when the gas reaches the filter was determined by using a membrane filter in conjunction with a dust count under a microscope. A membrane filter is a cellulosic sheet about 150 microns thick containing millions of holes per square centimeter--holes of uniform diameter that run directly through the sheet without interconnection.

The Pilbara region of Western Australia is well known for its abundant exports of hematite-goethite deposits, which have been mined and exported since the 1960s. Magnetite has also been mined in Australia throughout this period, although historically of much lower production volumes (WA Iron Ore profile, 2016). Magnetite offers a source supply of material >66 per cent iron grade product, which is used as premium feed (predominantly pellets) to blast furnaces or specialised steel mills.The Iron Bridge project area contains outcropping magnetite and hematite banded iron formation (BIF), which within the region was recognised as having potential to host economic mineralisation during the 1960s. Development within the project area, however, did not commence until Fortescue Metals Group acquired the tenements based on a 2004 agreement, formed a joint venture with interested groups and then initiated an assessment for magnetite (rather than hematite) mining potential. The combined deposits now have an identified large mineral resource inventory, with test work demonstrating they are able to produce a magnetite concentrate of greater than 66 per cent Fe over an extended mine life. This concentrate would be suitable for forming pellets or feed for direct reduced iron products.The deposits form a singular orebody, approximately 12 km in length by 1 km in width and extending to depths beyond 600 m. The four main deposits are geographically separate and have subtle mineralogical differences, thought driven by the degree of deformation and alteration within each area.Definition of the stratigraphy, structure and key mineralogy of the deposits has been carried out through several stages of exploration and project development. This has also included recent mining and processing of more than 1 Mt of feed material to an on-site processing facility. This demonstrated at a production scale that dry plus wet processing techniques can efficiently separate the magnetite from the gangue minerals to form a suitable (marketable) product.Geometallurgical classification of the host stratigraphy has been carried out from analysing the high volume of quantitative data available for this deposit. This has allowed definition of mappable units within the fresh BIF to be used as a driver in mine scheduling, delivering optimal feed to the processing plant.Construction of mine and processing facilities is expected to commence once all technical risks have been addressed, market conditions are deemed appropriate and approval is given by the joint venture partners.CITATION:Simpson, C, 2017. This paper presents the results of an extensive hydrological and geomechanical monitoring program which Gas conducted at a longwall coal mine in W. Va. The field program included monitoring of groundwater levels. overburden hydraulic conductivity, overburden movement, and surface subsidence relative to the passage of the longwall. Overburden geology and rock strength characteristics were evaluated prior to mining. A postmining corehole was drilled to evaluate main roof fracturing. An overburden response model is proposed based on the correlations between hydrological and geomechanical data.

Burning coal-mine refuse banks were surveyed in 15 States. The following characteristics were tabulated for 495 hanks: County; name, population, and distance of nearest town; size and status of bank; status and stage of fire; and topography. Ways of controlling fires were reviewed, the compacting and sealing method proving most satisfactory. Means for preventing refuse-bank fires by proper construction of banks are described.

The paper describes the search for mineral deposits in an area of 4,500 sq. miles of south-west Tasmania. The area is one of difficult access and the problem of speedy movement and maintenance of field parties was solved by the use of helicopters. The programme has followed a systematic pattern of the aerial photography of the exploration area with the preparation of photQmosaics and topographical base sheets from these mosaics. Geological maps were initially prepared by photogeological interpretation and making use where possible of pre-existing information. The maps produced were later checked by ground traverses. Geophysical maps were obtained by the use of airborne magnetic, electromagnetic and radiometric methods. Geophysical and geological anomalies were checked on the ground by a campaign using ground geophysical equipment in the former case and geological and geochemical work in both instances. Audio Frequency Magnetic and Induced Polarization techniques were used in an area which was covered by several hundred feet of Tertiary sediments.The campaign has reached the stage of the drilling of specific targets.INTRODUCTIONThis paper describes the activities of Lyell-E.Z. Explorations (L.E.E.), an organization which was formed in 1956 by the Mt. Lyell Mining and Railway Co. Ltd. and the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. to explore for mineral deposits in an area of approximately 4,500 sq. miles in southwest and southern Tasmania. To provide the necessary personnel and equipment for this project the exploration resources of both Companies were pooled and augmented and a headquarters was established in Queenstown. The work was directed by a Committee of four made up of officials from both Companies; a review of this structure has recently been presented by Hall (1959).

Automated temporary roof support (ATRS) systems have been incorporated into roof bolters since the 1970?s. During roof bolting, many injuries have occurred from large pieces of draw rock falling inby the ATRS beam and tipping back into the operator?s area. Other injuries have occurred due to smaller, sharp rocks falling onto the operator?s hand and arm during initiation of roof bolt drilling. These injuries are attributed to weak immediate roof, sometimes called roof skin failure. Even though ATRS systems support the roof and provide a measure of protection against roof skin failure, additional hazards sometimes do exist immediately inby and outby the supported roof. Design innovations such as the ATRS mounted rocker pad deflector systems have been designed to improve the roof bolter operator safety. This paper will inform the reader of the hazards, machine evolution through different design solutions, and the current state of the art in preventing roof skin failure injuries when roof bolting.
