The "Art" of Big Hole Drilling has been in a continual state of evolution at the Nevada Test Site since the start of underground testing in 1961. Emplacement holes for nuclear devices are still being drilled by the rotary drilling process, but almost all the hardware and systems have undergone many changes during the intervening years. The current design of bits, cutters, and other big hole drilling hardware results from contributions of manufacturers and Test Site personnel. The dual string, air lift, reverse circulation system was developed at the Test Site. Necessity was really the Mother of this invention, but this circulation system is worthy of consideration under almost any condition. Drill rigs for Big Hole drilling are usually adaptations of large Oil Well drill rigs with minor modifications required to handle the big bits and drilling assemblies. Steel remains the favorite shaft lining material, but a lot of thought is being given to concrete linings, especially precast concrete.

"Early attempts at estimation of stress wave damage in blasting by use of finite element analysis met with limited success due to numerical instabilities that prevented calculations from being carried to late times. A"" improved damage model based on microcrack growth in tension allows finite elementcalculations which remain stable at late times. Estimation of crater profiles for blasting experiments in granite demonstrate successful simulations with this model."

Owing to the increased consumption of sulphuric acid; Australian manufacturers have, from time to time, been seeking for a satisfactory source of sulphur that would make them independent of foreign supplies.Some years ago a considerable amount of acid was obtained from the roasting of Spanish pyrites. This ore, in 1913 or thereabouts, cost 16s. per ton f.o.b. Huelva, and freight to the eastern seaboard of Australia was about 20s. per ton. As the ore contained 48% to 50% of available sulphur, it was costing roughly 9d. or 10d. per unit, and, in addition, the cinder, after roasting, was a product of considerable value to smelters, containing as it did a high percentage of iron suitable for fluxing, and appreciable values in silver and gold.

The fundamental features of the Cable Belt Conveyor are described. It consists of independent wire ropes which take the transmission load, and a special reinforced rubber belt which acts 'only as carrier of material. The first cable belt installation in Scotland is described briefly.A general description of this type of conveyor is followed by details of the rubber belt construction and the method of joining sections of belt. The drive unit, the tensioning arrangements and the power requirements are outlined.Applications of the cable belt conveyor are 'dealt with and its advantages summarized.INTRODUCTIONThe cable belt conveyor, as its name implies is a conveyor composed of steel wire ropes and a rubber belt, in which the ropes serve as transmission members, and the belt merely as a carrier of materials.Over the years it has been the ambition of engineers connected with the belt conveyor industry to develop a conveyor that would use the high tensile strength of wire ropes to transmit the stresses involved in the driving of large capacity belt conveyors. Different lines of approach have been adopted in the United States of America and in Britain. In the United States the method adopted was to introduce a large number of flexible steel cables into the rubber belt itself, in the form of a closely packed layer arranged across the full width of the belt. These small cables are packed in a nylon filled duck envelope which is incorporated in the rubber belt. This is commonly known as the steel corded conveyor belt. In Britain, a Scottish firm developed a rubber belt conveyor in which full advantage was taken of the high tensile features of wire rope, without embodying or moulding the wire rope into the rubber belt, so that the two wire ropes and the rubber...

The Cooper River Bridge, the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America, replaces two existing bridges along U.S. Highway 17 and connects the City of Charleston and the town of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Two diamond shaped towers support the 1,546 ft long main span over Cooper River and allows for a 1000 ft wide navigation channel. The Charleston high-level approach is 4351 ft long and provides a 250 ft wide navigation channel for Town Creek, while the Mount Pleasant high-level approach is 2,090 ft long. Due to the high seismicity in the region, potential vessel impact, and hurricanes, large lateral loads are expected. From various types of foundations, 10-foot diameter drilled shafts were selected for their high capacity against vertical and lateral loadings. The shafts are founded on a stiff to very stiff lightly cemented calcareous sandy clay or sandy silt layer, called Cooper Marl, which underlies the coastal sediments of the interbedded clays and sands. A group of 11 shafts supports each main tower, while a rock island protects it from vessel collision. A group of 4 to 8 shafts foundations support the other piers of the main span unit. A pair of shafts supports the High Level Approach piers. The shaft tip elevations vary from 120 ft to 230 ft below water line. An elaborate geotechnical investigation was conducted on the site, including a load test program on full-scale shafts under axial and lateral loads. The results of the tests were used to calibrate the lateral and axial soil resistance. The objective of this paper is to present the different aspects of the bridge foundation design.

Since early 1970?s skirt suction foundations (skirted foundation / bucket foundation) have been used as support for large fixed substructures or anchors for floating structures in offshore hydrocarbon development projects. In recent years skirt suction foundations are recognized as one of the solutions in foundations applicable to bridge substructures installed in waters, because skirt foundations have a wide variety of functions such as control of settlement during service life, less impact to environments during operation at installation site. This paper introduces general features of skirt suction foundations, and then discusses design practice of them for the application to bridge substructures, with reference to experiments in both laboratory and field.

As part of a continuing project to develop refractory metal alloys for high-temperature structural applications, the Bureau of Mines applied solid solution and precipitation strengthening techniques to improve the properties of columbium alloys. The purpose was to investigate the effects of hafnium, tungsten, and boron on the formability, strength, and oxidation resistance of columbium. The experiment was of factorial design with two replications which called for 72 ingots of 36 basic compositions, weighing 150 grams each. Hafnium, tungsten, and boron were evaluated at 3, 3, and 4 levels, respectively. Values of alloy content are all in atomic percent. The highest strength observed was 29,000 psi at 1,200° C for alloys Cb-15Hf (No. 3), Cb-7.5Hf-5W-2B (No. 14), and Cb-15Hf-5W-2B (No. 15). At 1,200° C, the ternary alloy Cb-15Hf-5W (No. 6) which has shown good properties in previous Bureau of Mines investigations was the most resistant to oxidation For boron additions, the alloys oxidized more readily with increasing amounts of this element. The fabricability of the alloys high in boron became increasingly difficult, resulting in an inadequate number of alloys required for a complete statistical analysis for all the tests. As a result of the decrease in ductility, an insufficient quantity of tensile samples were available for a proper analysis for the high-temperature strength data.

"Abstract — Systematic characterization of the mineralogy of massive sulfide ore deposits can provide valuable insights into ore genesis and metallurgical processing that would not be apparent otherwise. We describe a method wherein (1) normative mineral abundances are calculated from whole-rock chemical assays using an algorithm, (2) the results are cast in block models, (3) the results are then verified with automated image analysis of a subset of samples prepared as grain mounts by backscattered electron imaging and X-ray mapping on a scanning electron microscope, and (4) those verified results are integrated with textural data determined by optical microscopy.The technique is applied to the magmatic Ni-Cu-Co sulfides of the Ovoid orebody, based on geochemical assays of 3175 whole-rock samples. Three principal ore zones are defined in the Ovoid. Type I ore occurs in the center of the deposit; it is magnetite-rich and pyrrhotite-poor with intermediate contents of pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Type II ore surrounds Type I ore and is pentlanditechalcopyrite- rich with intermediate contents of pyrrhotite and magnetite. Type III ore occurs at the base and along the outer periphery of the northern part of the orebody; it is pyrrhotite-rich and chalcopyrite- poor with an intermediate content of pentlandite, and a low-to-intermediate content of magnetite."

A slag-metal equilibrium study of the system SnO-FeO-(Si02+Al2O3)/Sn-Fe was carried out at 1250°C. The distribution coefficient, k =(Sn/Fe)metal X (Fe/Sn)slag was found to range from 246 for an iron contentof 0·53 per cenrt in the metal to 82 for an iron content of 6·4 per cent. The value of the ratio ?SnO/?FeO was calculated and found to be approximately a function of per cent SnO in slag alone in the region (Si02+Al2O3)/ FeO = 0·4 to 1·2. Comparison with other published work suggests that the addition of CaO to slags having (SiO2+Al203)/FeO ratios of about 1·1 raises the value of ?SnO/?FeO...

A method of measuring the degree of contact between grains of 1 phase in multiphase alloys is derived. It is shown that the number and the areas of contacts between grains can be determined by metallographic analysis. Relations between the area of contact, the dihedral angle, and the mean free path of spherical grains are developed. It is often desirable to interpret the mechanical behavior of alloys in terms of structural features observed under the microscope. A quantitative description of microstructures of multi-phase alloys requires consideration of geometrical and topological factors such as the amount, size, and shape of grains and the continuity of the constituent phases. The number and dimensions of grains may be metallographically determined by applying the methods described by Smith and Guttman1 and by Fullman2 in their papers on the measurement of particle size and internal boundaries in opaque bodies. The present work intends to show that the same methods can be used to evaluate some of the parameters of phase continuity; namely, contiguity, number of contacts, and areas of contact of grains of 1 phase. Application of these concepts may be found in such problems as the calculation of electrical conductivity of 2-phase alloys, or the evaluation of the length of fracture path through grains of a brittle phase more or less dispersed in a matrix. I. DEFINITION The following definitions and derivations are based on 2-phase alloys, of which the units of the microstructure are grains. Contiguity is defined as the average fraction of surface area shared by 1 grain of a phase with all neighboring grains of the same phase. In a 2-phase alloy of constituents A and B, the contiguity of phase B is given by: where Cb is the contiguity of phase B aBß is the average area of contact between a grain of phase B and adjacent grains of phase B, aAB is the average area of contact between a grain of phase B and adjacent grains of phase A. The contiguity is a measure of the average degree of contact between grains of phase B in the 2-phase mixture. The ratio varies from 0 to 1 as the distribution of phase B changes from a completely dispersed to a fully agglomerated structure. Smith and Guttman1 have shown that the relative areas of 2 kinds of interfaces in a volume are directly proportional to the number of interfaces of each type intersected by a random line. The lines can be drawn on metallographically prepared surfaces as long as these are random sections through the sample. The contiguity ratio of phase B then becomes: Cb = 2NBB/NAB + 2N BB [2] where: NBB is the number of interfaces between grains of phase B intersected per unit length of random line. Nab is the number of interfaces between grains of phase B and grains of phase A intersected per unit length of random line. The factor 2 arises in Eq. [2] because each interface B-B is associated with 2 grains of B-phase, whereas the interface A-B involves only 1 grain of B-phase. The calculations of contiguity do not require any assumption as to volume fraction, particle size, or particle shape. Fullman2 gives an expression for the determination of the mean free path between particles. The mean free path PB between grains of phase A, i.e., through grains or agglomerates of phase B, may be found from the relationship: PB =2fB/NAB [3] where fB is the volume fraction of phase B. The calculation of the mean free path is independent of grain shape and grain size distribution. In September 2003, a test was conducted to see if a115-mm- (4.5-in.-) diam Mocap Vari-Stem blasthole plug could improve the pattern of explosives using different top stemming material. The test took place at the J.S. Faulkroad and Sonsstone quarry in McCalisterville, PA. The test consisted of a production stone blast. Half of the holes were stemmed with standard crushed stone. Two-thirds of the remaining half were stemmed with Vari-Stem plugs and crushed stone. And the remaining one-third of the second 50 percent was stemmed with Vari-Stem plugs and only drill cuttings.

A simple formula is introduced which allows the evaluation of dynamic pile tests. The following case is considered: The pile top is dynamically loaded by an impact. The velocity v of the pile top is recorded over the time. Let v1 and v2 be the first and the second maximum of this curve. Then, the pile bearing capacity (resulting from ideally plastic resistance at the pile wall and at the tip) can be set approximately equal to Z(v1- ½ v2), where Z is the impedance of the pile cross section. Due to the assumption of ideal plastic resistances, radiation damping needs not be taken into account. Material damping may be important in rate sensitive soils (such as clay, even if it is highly overconsolidated). A simple correction procedure for material damping is proposed.

The escalating demand for coal, in addition to the steady depletion of reserves, has produced increasingly difficult mining conditions for coal mining companies within the United States, resulting in mining above or below previously mined areas. The safe and productive extraction of coal in a multiple seam environment requires specific design technology for effective mine planning. Presently, one of the most useful design approaches for multiple-seam feasibility analysis is using numerical modeling techniques. Therefore, numerical modeling programs LaModel 2.1 and Lam2D were used to determine the feasibility of mining the Herrin (No. 6) coal seam over an existing room-and-pillar mine in the Springfield (No. 5) coal seam in the Illinois Basin.

Tin in ores containing 0·025 to 1·5 per cent tin can be determined polarographically by the reduction of the chlorostannite ion at the dropping mercury electrode in 2M hydrochloric acid solution containing 15 per cent ammonium chloride. The tin is separated from interfering elements by distillation as the tetrabromide and collected from the distillate by co-precipitation with aluminium hydroxide. The method can detect 0·01 per cent tin in ore.INTRODUCTIONAn iodimetric method, suitable for routine analysis of titrating tin in concentrations down to 1 per cent, has been available for some years (Low, Weinig, and Schoder, 1939).As concentrations fall below 1 per cent tin, there is increasing difficulty in obtaining a distinct end point due to large amounts of iron and silica normally present after fusion of the ore. Since concentrations of tin down to 0·02 per cent are significant in ore dressing products it was necessary to examine methods to determine such low concentrations, and to adapt these to tin ores containing a wide variety of other minerals.EXPERIMENTALDigestion and separationCassiterite, the principal tin mineral, is refractory but readily attacked by a sodium peroxide flux to yield soluble sodium stannate. South Africa’s best-quality coal, located in the central Highveld basin, is becoming depleted and alternative sources of coal, such as the Waterberg coalfield, will have to be developed to supply the country with coal in the future. The quality of the coal being mined in the central basin is gradually becoming poorer. This necessitates that more of the coal be processed to improve the quality to meet customer requirements. The challenge to the coal processing industry is to process low-yielding coals to produce goodquality products and at the same time ensure that coal mining remains economically viable. This requires that more cost-effective coal processing technologies be investigated and implemented.

This paper presents a comprehensive review of steel sheet piling including internationally manufactured hot rolled sections, their history, applications, installation and driving techniques. The discussion will cover both temporary and permanent installations; temporary piling used in construction of cofferdams with various bracing systems, deep foundation installations for buildings, bridges and tunnels, etc., and permanent piling used for highway, railroad and bridge construction as well as for riverbanks, piers, wharfs and docks, normally required for port facilities. In addition, cofferdams, as self-supporting gravity structures where interlock strength is of prime importance, will be discussed. The design and application of light, intermediate and heavy sections will be presented including heavy combined walls and information on Z-shaped, U-shaped and HZ sections and their corresponding interlocks. Emphasis is placed on new developments for design applications for deep foundations and waterfront structures within the "state of the art".

Several static tests estimate the capacity of mine waste to produce and neutralize acid and are used as tools for predicting metal-mine waste drainage quality. Various methods and their accuracies are addressed. More accurate quantification of these capacities, as well as their availability and reactivity, may be necessary to predict drainage quality from some mine wastes. Chemical analyses, x-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electron beam analyses are among the techniques commercially available to more accurately quantify these capacities and provide insight into their availability and reactivity.

El Complejo Pasco —ubicado en la Cordillera Oriental de los Andes de la sierra central del Perú, en el distrito de San Francisco de Asís, provincia y departamento de Pasco— está constituido por las unidades subterráneas de Atacocha y Porvenir, la operación a tajo abierto Glory Hole y tres proyectos brownfield ubicados en la periferia de la concesión. Tanto Atacocha como Porvenir son depósitos tipo skarn, con mineralización distal de Zn y Pb(+/-Au) y proximal de Zn+/-Cu, asociados a cuerpos hipoabisales de composición cuarzoandesítica y andesítica. Estudios y exploraciones recientes muestran otros tipos de sistemas mineralizados, como brechas tectónicas con reactivación hidrotermal tardía, un sistema epitermal de sulfuración intermedia en vetas, cuerpos irregulares, entre otros, y un sistema tipo pórfido. La Falla Milpo-Atacocha, de rumbo N-S, juega un rol importante, ya que los intrusivos (Stock Milpo y Santa Bárbara) que generan la mineralización del tipo skarn están controlados por esta falla. Existe otro tipo de mineralización, asociado al sistema NW-SE (Falla 13): un sistema epitermal de sulfuración intermedia. Este trabajo pretende mostrar los últimos avances en las interpretaciones metalogenéticas, producto de un intenso programa de exploración (aproximadamente 80,000 m. DDH / 2018) y de un programa de recategorización de recursos (a través de 60,000 m. DDH), que permitirá hacer posible una operación sostenible de 12 años.

Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) plays a fundamental role in the national and local economies of resource-rich countries in Africa. As such, more effort must be geared towards fostering this type of economic activity to sustain livelihoods in rural communities. Across Africa, efforts to operationalize ASM based on a sustainable development framework have been quite tedious and often ineffective. This is because most of these frameworks lacked context and an understanding of the continuum from the artisanal through small-scale and up to the junior miner, grouped under the general term ?ASM?. Driven by the need to contextualize some of the definitional issues in this niche sector, and gain a clearer understanding of their peculiar challenges, this paper aims to contribute to the debate on ASM by considering two of Africa?s resource-rich countries ? Ghana and South Africa. Since South Africa has made greater inroads in protecting the interests of small-scale miners, we thus draw comparisons from both countries? approach to ASM, outline the lessons learnt, and provide recommendations regarding the ways forward.

This paper summarises the development t,) date for the Hidden Valley Gold (HVG) Project. It starts with the original exploration work, covers the detailed feasibility study activities and concludes with the current phase of extra exploration drilling. A brief technical summary has been made from the various mining, process and environmental studies that were undertaken as part of the project approval process. A discussion of the influential non-technical factors is included, as well as a view of the future prospects for an operating mine. The project was always seen as marginal, given the low grades, small resource and short mine life. However the capital and operating costs were lowered with aggressive design and it was regarded an acceptable development by CRA. The opportunity was taken to review the project when delays in start-up were encountered. An updated financial evaluation showed a subeconomic resource in 1990 terms and this resulted in a new exploration phase to identify a larger deposit.
