"Every project is different. While “conventional” SAG and ball mill circuits will suit many projects, for others there are alternatives, which may produce improved outcomes. This paper examines particular examples of recent front end designs which either went against conventional thinking or which employed “out of the box” thinking to realize the desired results.One such example is the design strategy employed for a small capacity gold plant in Victoria, Australia. The selection of HPGR technology for small capacity projects is not generally favoured, given the relatively high cost of small HPGR machines. However, the unusual size distribution of the gold and its liberation characteristics were expected to lead to improved gold recovery offsetting the higher capital cost.Another example is the first large scale application of milling in acid for copper recovery, at a project in south east Asia. The stainless steel, single stage SAG mill using ceramic grinding media was more expensive than a mill constructed of conventional materials. However, the steps of scrubbing, slurrying, grinding and leaching could all be achieved in a single unit operation and the need for thickening and repulping with acid after milling was eliminated.Rod mills were selected for both primary and secondary milling duties for another south east Asian project despite their somewhat outdated reputation. A review of previous industry experience confirmed that rod mills could outperform conventional rod/ball or SAG/ball circuits in cases where the size distribution of the ground product is critical to downstream recovery.These examples are discussed with particular focus on the key drivers in each case."

The purpose of this effort was to investigate the feasibility of employing a piezoelectric transducer for seismic communications applications in mine environments. The transducer, a government furnished device incorporated a high Q, spring-mass resonator to load the air side of the piezoelectric crystal. The resonant frequency was seismic load dependent and fell in the range of 300 to 340 Hz. The effort included a mathematical analysis of the transducer, with corroborative laboratory tests, together with actual communications experiments performed first in an open-formation limestone quarry and finally in an operating iron mine. This work showed that the transducer could be coupled efficiently to hard, competent rock media with power conversion efficiencies of 70 to 80 percent (electrical to mechanical) in typical installations. In the iron mine, when radiating peak power was about 30 W (acoustical) in a gated pulse mode, signals were received at a distance of 760 ft through a massive rhyolite porphyry formation. This represents a 15% radiation efficiency with an input of 200 watts. Despite the high ambient noise level due to operating mine machinery, a signal-to-noise ratio of about 20 dB was achieved using a very narrow band filter to process the received signal, and a data rate of about two pulses/sec was demonstrated.

Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was shown to catalyse biodegradation of chalcopyrite concentrates. The process was growth associated at normal temperatures (30°C) in dilute acid solution (pH2, H2SO4) in submerged cultures. Approximately 20% of the copper dissolved in 22 days in the presence of T ferrooxidans while less than 0.6% was released when bacteria were absent. In ore column leachates, the iron and sulphur oxidizing species T ferrooxidans, ranged from I04 to I06 cells/ml while exdusively sulphur oxidizing species ranged from I02 to 104 cells/ml. T ferrooxidans predominated below pH 3 while other sulphur oxidizing bacteria favoured higher pH. Organisms were distributed vertically in ore columns according to pH differences, resulting from gradual acid consumption by gangue, during trickle irrigation.There was a sequential development of bacteria in leachates from fresh ore irrigated with water only. High pH sulphur oxidizers were always present, low pH sulphur oxidizers appeared within a week while T ferrooxidans took 50 days to show up. Routine monitoring of bacteria in dump leachates provided a qualitative indication of events in otherwise inaccessible ore bodies.

"Abstract The European Federation of Foundation Contractors (EFFC) and Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) developed a sector-specific carbon accounting methodology and associated “carbon calculator” for foundations and geotechnical works. The EFFC-DFI Carbon Calculator is believed to be one of the construction industry’s first collaboratively produced carbon calculator tools for European and international countries based on verifiable and standardized data. It is intended that the tool be adopted internationally and become the open-source industry standard for ground works. A detailed methodological guide is provided with the calculator (Lemaignan and Wilmotte, 2013). This guide explains the background of the standards, accounting methodologies, emission sources and factors that were used as the bases for the tool development and includes detailed guidance on use of the calculator.Drivers for DevelopmentFoundation contractors anticipate project cost and carbon emissions will become inextricably linked in response to the climbing price of fossil fuels and carbon intensive materials as resources become scarce. Low carbon solutions will therefore become more competitive options. Also with high profile construction projects having low carbon/carbon neutrality as requirements, sustainability in the foundations industry also becomes a market issue.This carbon calculator will be used to lead the industry and shape the expectations of commissioning organisations by providing insight into the carbon cost of their projects. Commissioning organizations are encouraged to be aware of the carbon impact of projects and to also facilitate a fair and accurate way of comparing footprints to provide a level playing field for foundation contractors."

River Des Peres Foul water Interceptor (Skinker–McCausland Tunnel) is a gravity sewer tunnel constructed to eliminate dry sewage overflows during high river stages and to improve the wastewater collection and treatment. The original 78-inch (2m)finished diameter Skinker-McCausland Tunnel started as a 21,500 feet (6.5km)interceptor with 13 work, drop and access shafts. The tunnel constructions included soft ground, mixed face and rock tunneling in karst formation with maximum overburden of 175 feet (53m). Due to the success of the project, the tunnel alignment was extended another13,361 feet (4.1 km) and 7 new structures by negotiating two additional segments with the contractor and the designers.

The Hill 50 Gold Mine is situated at Boogardie, 3 miles on a bearing of 295 degrees from; Mount Magnet township. Mount Magnet lies 300 miles north-north-east of Perth, Western Australia (Fig. 1).The older workings of the mine may be identified with those of Sirdar, Gold Mining Lease 696M The Sirdar had been worked before 1902 though no records remain, and irom 1903 to 1912 about a thousana tons at a grade of 6' 2 dwt. was extracted annually; by the end of 1918 6,225 oz. of gold had been obtained from the milling of 17,852 tons of ore. In view of these yields, and the length and width of the lode, this mine was early recognized as one of the most promising in the district. From 1919 to 1924 the ground,including G.M.L. 1282M, was held as Mt. Zion G.M.L. 1183M.The Hill 50 Gold Mine N.L. company took up the workings as Hill 50 G.M.L. 1282M in 1934 and have continued operations to the date of writing. To the end of 1956 the Hill 50 Gold Mine had yielded 982,106 tons of ore for a return of 448,'602 fine oz. of gold.The mine has been described by: J utson (1915), Feldtmann (1920), Johnson (1949), and Finucane (1953). Finucane (1953) details the mine structure to a depth of 414 ft. The author was able to examine the mine to a depth of 1305 ft. Detailed main level mapping to the 1060 level and a detailed surface examination have revealed aspects of the structure which were previously obscure.

Theoretically, the main driver behind a mining operations? sourcing decision should differ from company to company, and within a company from project to project, but in reality it often relates to cost. Research confirms that there are a number of factors, including cost, to consider when choosing between in-house and outsourced mining. While the literature is rife with factors to consider, little information exists on how to apply these in practice and the relative importance of the different factors to be considered. A study was conducted to determine whether mining is truly a core competency for a mid-tier commodity specialist mining company. Furthermore, a decision-making framework for mining operations sourcing was developed, and the critical success factors that should be adhered to if outsourced mining is chosen were determined. The research showed that owner mining is not a core competency for the mining company investigated. A decision-making framework was developed using the order winner/order qualifier structure, which can be used to facilitate the mining sourcing decision. The most important tools at the disposal of a mine owner?s team to manage a contractor miner are the social and output control mechanisms, according to the critical success factors study.

Stripping of Fe (III) from D2EHPA Using Different Reagents The common way to extract Fe(III) from an organic solvent is by using concentrated acidic solutions. The stripping of Fe(III) from organic solvent Di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) by hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions has been found to increase with increasing the acid concentration. However, the use of a concentrated acidic solution such as 6 M HCl can degrade the organic molecules. In this research, to increase the efficiency of Fe(III) stripping from D2EHPA, effect of some acids, salts and buffer solutions was studied. Influence of Tri-butyl phosphate (TBP) as modifier on the Fe(III) stripping operation was also investigated. According to the results, the best Fe stripping recovery was achieved in the presence of low acid concentration and the salts which was 72.4 per cent oxalic acid, 70 per cent ammonium oxalate and 75 per cent buffer of oxalic acid and ammonium oxalate. The results also showed a better recovery in the presence of the buffer rather than the salt. Finally, increasing the concentration of TBP, HCl and H2SO4 resulted in a higher stripping efficiency of Fe(III). However, in the presence of oxalic acid and its salts increasing the reagent concentration did not increase the stripping efficiency and at this condition, the recovery of iron remained constant.

Your Excellency, on behalf of the Council of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and, indeed, on behalf of everyone present, I extend to you a welcome, and our thanks for your gracious acceptance of the invitation to be here to-day and, later on, to present Honorary Membership Certificates. I also welcome the several official representatives of our Allies, of Great Britain and our sister Dominions.To Messrs. E. C. Driffield and E. J. Rigby, two of the original Foundation Members, who are with us to-day, I extend greetings.The present occasion is opportune to express, on behalf of a representative body of professional men, deep appreciation of the sacrifice which His Majesty the King has made, and will continue to make, by appointing His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester as Governor General of Australia and, therefore, His Majesty's senior personal representative in this country.I suppose, that as the primary reason for our assembly to-day is to celebrate the Fiftieth Year of the Institute's existence, I should properly on this occasion, give an account of its history and development. However, as this subject was ably covered by Mr. L. V. Waterhouse, in his Presidential Address in 1938, I trust I may be excused for selecting some other subject. I shall, therefore, exercise my privilege as President and give you a short history of the Mining and Metallurgical Industry of this country with special reference to its effect on the development of the Commonwealth and on the national economy. I apologize in advance for any statistics which I inflict upon you; some of these will be three or four years out of date, because of censorship restrictions. I shall as far as possible refer firstly to the industry prior to and including 1893, the Institute's foundation year, and then to subsequent development.Australia, is pre-eminently a pastoral and agricultural country and it leads the world in the production of wool. Nevertheless, it has an international reputation as a producer of gold and various metals and of minetal products.The development of gold mining in the decade 1840-50 was an epoch-making event in Australia's history, because, to quote one writer's apt phrase, "it precipitated Australia into nationhood." It was certainly responsible for a rapid increase in population. Thus, during the period 1841-1861 the population of Australia increased fourfold, from 221,000 to 1,170,000.The effect of the discovery of gold in Western Australia was even more striking. As part of JAGUARS (JApanese-German Underground Acoustic emission Research in South Africa), high-resolution tiltmeters were installed during 2007 at Mponeng gold mine, South Africa, in an attempt to study and understand the risks posed by in-mine seismic events and to subsequently use the knowledge gained to mitigate these risks. In December 2007, an M2.2 event occurred at Mponeng and was detected by the tiltmeters installed. The tilt expected for the M2.2 event is modelled through the use of numerical and analytical tools and utilizing, as input parameters, characteristics of the event such as the rupture area, the amount of slip, elastic properties of the rock, the state of stress before the event occurred, and frictional parameters of the rupture. The calculated tilt values are correlated and compared with the recorded data, and are found to be of the same order. Certain input parameters, such as the initial rupture point, are further constrained by varying them, during modelling, until the calculated and observed tilt values are approximately equal. From modelling, it can be concluded that the rupture point had to be closer to the location of the tiltmeters. In addition, possible locations acting as source areas for the observed aftertilt are determined. Further modelling still needs to be done to quantify the effects of the tunnel close to the tiltmeters and plastic deformation of the rock mass. INTRODUCTIONThe faults described in the following paper are of a somewhat unusual character, and have presented a serious problem both in the development and mining of many ore-bodies on the Eastern side of the Boulder Belt. They are mentioned only briefly in the literature of the field, but were observed by, both Stillwell (1)t and Gustafson (2), and have been studied by other geologists and operators in various parts of the "Belt." Their effect on the lodes of Hamilton Section, Great Boulder Mine, was described by King (3) in 1937, and, during recent years, they have been encountered in most of the Great Boulder workings extending east of the Boulder Dyke.Although this paper is based mainly on a study of faulting and development problems on the Great Boulder mine, the general conclusions reached may be applicable to the solution of similar faulting problems in other mines throughout the field.In order to arrive at a clear understanding of the somewhat complicated relationships which the east-dipping faults bear to the lode systems it will be necessary to give a brief outline of the salient geological and structural features of the "Belt" before proceeding to describe the faults themselves.2. GENERAL GEOLOGYThe most recent descriptions of the geology of Kalgoorlie are those by Stillwell (1) and Gustafson (2) and the reader is referred to these as representing the basis of current knowledge of the geology of the field.The Boulder Belt is comprised of a central core of altered quartz dolerite which is flanked on either side by fine grained greenstones and lavas, usually referred to as the calc schists. Down the centre of the quartz dolerite mass there is an infolded bed of slate (2, p. 105) which has been intruded in lit par lit fashion by albite porphyry; the composite body of slate and porphyry so formed is known as the "Boulder Dyke." Numerous smaller porphyry dykes intrude both the quartz dolerite and the calc schist; these vary in composition and range from chloritised hornblende porphyrites to albite porphyries.The whole of the rock assemblage has been subjected tG a considerable amount of folding, faulting, shearing and fracturing, the greater part of which took place before the formation of the lodes.

Flyash were melt mixed with nylon 6 at a 30wt% concentration. TYZOR® TPT, a coupling agent, was used to facilitate the link between filler and matrix. The morphological characterization, using SEM, revealed sufficient matrix residue on the filler surfaces thus confirming the strong interfacial bonding between the filler and the matrix on treating. Tensile, impact and the flexural properties of the composites were also improved with the incorporation of coupling agent. As flyash particles tend to impart a grayish color to the plastic, TiO2 pigment was employed to make the formulations aesthetic. The pigment was added to the filled system in 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 wt/wt ratios. Scattering of incident light and spectral reflectance was higher for smaller particle size flyash. Moreover an increase in the scattering with increase in pigment concentration indicates better dispersion of the pigment, which again is due to the presence of coupling agent.

The following paper deals with a method for the" Proximate Analysis" of Chloridized Ores, which are free from arsenic, antimony and lime. When these are present the analysis is rendered far more complicated, and many of the methods which I am about to describe could not be applied. Sufficient scope is therefore offered for discussing the analysis, when these metals are present, in a separate paper, which I hope to contribute at a future date.I am fully aware that this method is far from being perfect. No doubt many, modifications and improvements will suggest themselves to my readers, and I trust that this paper will be the means of giving a certain impetus to the study of Proximate Analysis which at the present time is practically dormant. For the benefit of my readers who are not initiated into the details of ordinary estimations, I have briefly described well known methods, which, however, will be found fully described in most text-books of analysis. Assuming that the ore contains. sulphates and chlorides of soda and magnesia, sulphates, sulphides, chlorides and oxides of copper, lead, iron, zinc, manganese and silver chloride, the analysis would be conducted as follows. The first compounds to estimate are the chlorides and sulphates of soda and magnesia.

"Cluff Mining operates the Phase II uranium mine and mill at Cluff Lake, northern Saskatchewan. During the Phase I operation, uranium tailings were generated by acid leaching of a gravity concentrate and high-grade ore for uranium recovery. The pre-treatment gravity process, as well as the high-grade nature of the ore, led to a concentration of gold in the tailings which justified the installation of a small circuit to recover the contained gold. The operating circuit consists of tailings repulping, grinding, cyanidation, carbon-in-pulp, gold recovery, and cyanide destruction by acidification, volatilization and re-neutralization. The process is described and typical operating parameters are provided. 1.0 INTRODUCTIONCluff Mining, a Saskatchewan partnership, is owned 20 percent by Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation (SMDC) and 80 percent by Amok Ltd./Ltee. (Amok), manager and operator of the partnership.The current operation includes the Phase II uranium mining and milling facilities, located at Cluff Lake 700 km north of Saskatoon, capable of processing 300,000 tonnes of ore to produce about 4,000,000 lbs. U308 (1500 tonnes of uranium) per year.The Phase I operation was initially established to process the very high grade ""D"" uranium orebody from 1980 to 1983. The leach tailings from the operation Phase I mill operation were found to contain elevated levels of gold. These high gold values were partially due to the gravity pre-concentration step included in the uranium recovery circuit, and to the naturally high levels of gold associated with the uranium mineralization in the ""D"" orebody."

As this is the first occasion I have had, and probably will be the only opportunity I shall have, of addressing such a large gathering of members and of student members of the Institute, I desire to- express my very deep appreciation of the honour 'you have paid me in electing me to the office of President for the current year. I realise also that such selection is a tribute to the Company which controls operations here, the centre selected for the annual meeting, but nevertheless there is afforded to the recipient a great deal of pride and of pleasure to hold the highest office in what is, in my opinion, undoubtedly the most important engineering society in Australasia.The past year has witnessed an unprecedented and unparalleled event in the history of the British Empire, and I think that we must all feel a wonderful sense of proud patriotism; the whole world was forced to admire the public calm and the dignity which accompanied the change in our Sovereign Ruler, and great tribute is due to the statesmanship of the Prime Minister, Mr. Baldwin. At this time, we should, I think, place on record our prayer, in common with all his people, that His Majesty, King George the Sixth, may enjoy a long and prosperous reign.The meeting at Port Pirie recalls one who did so much for the advancement of mining and metallurgy, especially in Australia. I refer to the late Mr. Delprat, who, as General Manager of The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited, had under his control for many years the smeltery in this centre. As you are aware, he had been elected an honorary member of this Institute, as well as of our sister Institutes in England and in America...

The aqueous chemistry of niobium and tantalum compounds with hydrofluoric acid is a mature field of investigation. In contrast, very little attention has been paid to reactions of these compounds in non-aqueous environments. Similarly, reactions of elemental fluorine with niobium and tantalum compounds have received little more than cursory attention in literature. This work discusses the isothermal reaction kinetics derived from thermogravimetry, using a less redundant approach than is currently the standard. We also discuss the most likely kinetic models for this reaction.

The Hiddenite District of Alexander County, NC has produced some of the world?s finest large emeralds since the first one was discovered 134 years ago. In fact, North America?s largest emeralds come from the district, making this one of the continent?s most unique gem deposits. In addition to emeralds, the Hiddenite District is also famous as the discovery site for the rare spodumene mineral hiddenite, first identified in 1881. Nowhere else in the world do these two minerals naturally occur together. The emeralds are a unique color variety of beryl (Al2Be3Si6O18) with trace amounts of Cr+3 and V+3 substituting for Al+3. The hiddenite (LiAlSi2O6) crystals also exhibit emerald green color due to traces of chromium. Consisting of three large deposits and numerous prospects, the district encompasses an area of 10 km2 (4 sq miles) centered on the small town of Hiddenite. Operations at the Adams, Ellis and North American Emerald Mines properties have been productive at irregular intervals since the 1880s. Currently, only the North American Emerald Mines property is being mined on a regular basis. Recent activity there has exposed a 3-hm2 (7.4-acre) pit with depths of 25 m (82 ft) that provides the best exposures of unweathered bedrock seen in the district in more than 120 years. Although no official records exist, public and private data indicate that the production of the entire Hiddenite District from 1880 to 2007 is about 70,000 carats of emerald and 20,000 carats of hiddenite. The bulk of the emeralds came from the North American Emerald Mine property (NAEM, formerly known as the Rist Mine) where sustained mining replaced the previous sporadic prospecting in 2000.

The thermite process, now approximately 80 years old, has heretofore been practiced in ceramic vessels. This paper outlines the successful production of several million pounds of alloy produced in zuater-cooled copper vessels. THE high temperatures necessary to produce fluid high-alumina slags have probably discouraged earlier workers from attempting to utilize water-cooled vessels. The following is a report of the successful application of this method, together with a report of the physical and chemical problems which had to be solved to make the process practical. About 1955, when Reading Alloys was more concerned with the production of ferrotungsten than with most other types of alloys, it was found to be exceedingly difficult to predict the reaction rate that one would experience from one tungsten ore to another . This difficulty was increased for two reasons: the physical state of the ore as received was seldom uniform, and the size of the mass to be reduced is a very important factor in developing the proper mix for the final reaction rate and temperature. For example, the reduction of ferric oxide with aluminum would theoretically produce temperatures of about 2600°C, and, in spite of the losses due to radiation, the energy is quite sufficient to produce a very fluid slag and iron effecting a very clean separation. On the other hand, the reduction of ferrous oxide with aluminum, while it is not as energetic as the first reaction, nevertheless should give temperatures above 2000"C, which should cause separation of alumina and iron, but, in practice, this is not the case and good fluid slag is not obtained. The heat of reaction, calculated from the thermo-dynamic heats of formation of the constituents of the reaction, offers a convenient guide to the feasibility of a thermite reaction. Thus, the values listed in Table I can be used as an approximate guide for estimating the results which may be expected in the reduction of various oxides and combinations of oxides using aluminum as the reducing agent. As a generalization, those reactions releasing approximately 600 cal per g of total mass represent the lower limit at which to expect separation of slag and metal. On the other hand, those reactions which release 1100 to 1200 cal per g are too violent to be used successfully without the addition of considerable inert material, such as lime, fluorspar, and so forth. Reaction rate is also a very important factor. This, of course, is governed very largely by the sizing and intermingling of the oxidant and reductant and by the starting temperature of the reactants. This is why those figures shown in Table I can only be a general guide. Further, it must be understood, that by adding powerful oxidizing agents, such as nitrates, chlorates or metallic oxides, such as molybdenum trioxide or chromium trioxide, certain problems respecting low temperatures are not necessarily solved. This is true in the addition of oxidants, such as sodium chlorate. By adding too high a concentration of sodium chlorate as a booster for a particular reduction, explosions are generated. Generally, they are of an intermittent type so as to give a Roman Candle effect to the reduction itself; with each surge resulting from a minor explosion more and more material is thrown

Samples weighing O· 2 g are digested with 2 ml of 72 per cent perchloric acid for 2 hr at 180°C, and then diluted to 10 ml. with water. After settling, an aliquot of clear solution is reduced with ascorbic-citric acid, and then a zinc dithiol solution is added to form a coloured molybdenum complex which is extracted with petroleum spirit for comparison with standards.Concentrations down to 2 p.p.m. may be analysed at rates up to 150 determinations per day.
